The Great Search: Vertical USB Type C replacement for IKEA VINDRIKTING

This week we're working a bit with BlitzCityDIY on a project to replace the innards of a IKEA VINDRIKTING PM2.5 sensor (https://learn.adafruit.com/ikea-vindriktning-hack-with-qt-py-esp32-s3-and-adafruit-io) with our own board featuring an ESP32-S2 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/espressif-systems/ESP32-S2-MINI-2-N4R2/16591895) so that it can be IoTified with ease. Ideally we will reuse the same enclosure - so we have to have matching connectors! The challenging one is the the vertical USB C, because we have very little clearance, so we need to find a near-exact match that doesn't have excess plastic. Otherwise, it won't fit into the case properly. Let's visit DigiKey to find a good match. EYE ON NPI - Aven Tools’ E-Z Pik Tweezer Sets

This week's EYE ON NPI is an "easy pick" - it's Aven Tools' E-Z Pik Tweezer sets (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/aven-tools/e-z-pik-tweezer-sets), available in lovely epoxy color coatings that let you quickly grab the exact one you need when doing rework, repair, or assembly. Having the right tool for the job will make your life a lot easier, and we're constantly poking and prodding our fine-pitch assemblies. We're also a teensy-bit clumsy, so we're sometimes dropping or denting our tweezers. That's why it's good to have a variety at hand: if you're using tweezers for 4+ hours a day, you will quickly notice the difference between your 'basic soldering kit tweezers' and the good stuff! This NPI comes at a good time, because DigiKey is currently running the "2024 PCB Business Card Challenge" with hackaday.com (https://hackaday.com/2024/06/19/2024-business-card-challenge-pcb-business-cards-for-everybody/) and a lot of the entries have SMT components to keep the circuitry small and thin. And even though I personally don't have an entry - I've seen my designs go from using 1206 (https://learn.adafruit.com/minty-mp3/make) to 0805 back when we had the MDC Luna Pick and Place (https://www.ladyada.net/wiki/mdcpickandplace) to now mostly 0603's thanks to our Samsung SM482 (https://blog.adafruit.com/2013/04/03/samsung-techwin-smt-sm482-adafruits-new-pick-and-place-machine-has-arrived/) with some dabbling in 0402's for smaller-packed designs. If you're reworking those small 0402s, a good set of tweezers is a must! There's two E-Z Pik Tweezer kits available, one with 6 pieces and one with 9, we splurged for the bigger kit (https://www.digikey.com/short/j9z4w2pn). Both are made with the same quality and features: Features Color-coded tweezer set allows operators to quickly identify the exact tweezer needed for a task with just a glance Available in 6- and 9-piece sets that contain popular tweezer styles packaged in a convenient storage pouch Made from anti-acid and anti-magnetic 304 series stainless steel, providing durability and corrosion resistance The tweezer tips are hand-finished by expert artisans for precise alignment The durable epoxy coating is designed for demanding tasks We particularly like the anti-magnetic because one of our tweezers got magnetized and now we can't use it with 0603's and smaller because the parts stick to the tip. Both Aven Tools E-Z Pik Tweezer sets (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/aven-tools/e-z-pik-tweezer-sets) come with a nice roll-up storage bag and are in stock for immediate shipment from DigiKey - order today and you'll be tweezin' by tomorrow afternoon.

The Great Search: Pin-complete RS-232 Transceiver

Back in the old days, before USB, we had to use RS-232 to communicate with computers. One of our first designs was the ATmex (https://www.ladyada.net/techproj/Atmex/index.html), a microcontroller board with a built in bootloader! We used the MAX232 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/MAX232DR/555684) to convert 5V serial to +-10V RS-232. These days, with USB-Serial converter chips like the FT232 or CP2102, you'll still see remnants of that past, such as DTR and RTS pins. When working with retro or industrial equipment, you may still find RS-232 DE-9 connectors. Let's take a look at some 3.3V-friendly transceivers, and find one that can do the full 5/3 pin-complete DE-9 connection set. EYE ON NPI - ST LSM6DSV32X 6-Axis IMU with 32 g Accelerometer

This week's EYE ON NPI gyres and gimbels through the wave. It's the latest LSM6DS 6-axis accelerometer + gyroscope IMU from STMicroelectronics. (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/stmicroelectronics/lsm6dsv32x-6-axis-imu). This latest update to the LSM6DS line is packed with features such as I3C, step counter, Qvar electrostatic sensing, finite state machine, AI 'learning core' and embedded sensor fusion so not only are you getting an IMU but a full user interface and sensor management hub. We've been stocking and using the LSM6DS series for many years: starting with the LSM6DS33 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4480) a great low cost 6-DoF to the LSM6DS3C-TR replacement (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4503) to the fancy-pants LSM6DSOX (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4438). These are pin-compatible, and nearly-firmware-compatible sensors that are compact, sensitive and precise. In particular, what we look for in a good IMU chip is the gyro offset and drift. When making an inertial measurement unit (IMU) especially one used for orientation calculations, the quality of the gyroscope has a big impact on the jitter/speed/drift. (https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-sensorlab-gyroscope-calibration/comparing-gyroscopes) Accelerometers are pretty good quality these days, we've figured out how to make them decades ago. And magnetometers are not as important - they don't update often and are used for orientation correction. Gyro's have the most error possibilities. In general, the more you pay, and the newer the sensor, the better performance you'll get in the form of low offset and low drift. The LSM6DSV32X has similar gyro/accel characteristics from the LSM6DSOX and ISM330DHCX - although we'll note the min/max is not documented, just the typical values. And there's some ISM330 parameters such as Angular random walk and Bias Instability, that are not specified. That said, as long as you're good on calibration, and the specs are within your limits, the embedded functions are where the LSM6DSV32X really shines. Like many ST accelerometers, there's a built in pedometer (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_LSM6DS/blob/master/examples/adafruit_lsm6ds_pedometer/adafruit_lsm6ds_pedometer.ino) as well as a tilt / motion sensor. The first is good for step counting, the second lets the sensor go into a low power state and set an interrupt pin when the device is moved or tilted to wake up the rest of the UI. The more advanced functions include a 'machine learning core' (https://www.st.com/resource/en/application_note/an5804-lsm6dsv16x-machine-learning-core-stmicroelectronics.pdf). We use that term lightly because it's more like a 'decision tree' where you can set up test conditionals post-normalization/filtering to classify simple motion states such as "running", "sitting" "lying down". These won't be as flexible as a true machine-learning algorithm that uses sample data to create a model, but you also don't have to spend any power or computation. Another advanced feature ST has been adding to many of their chips is Qvar electric charge variation detection sensing. This ultra-sensitive capacitance-like sensing can be used for human presence and motion detection, as well as touch/proximity detection. The eval board comes with a few Qvar plates for trying it as a slide or touch sensor as well as a 'radar' like proximity detector. (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/stmicroelectronics/STEVAL-MKI240KA/22522578) This could be nice to use if you've got a microcontroller that does not have touch sensing peripherals, since now you don't need a separate chip. The new feature we're most interested in is the "Sensor fusion low power" block - which can output a game rotation vector in quaternions, that gives the chip attitude (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orientation_(geometry)) direct from the sensor, without needing to continuously read/buffer/analyze the 6-DoF data. We'll note that there's no magnetometer, so it won't have 'absolute' orientation against the earth, but for many use cases a rough orientation - especially one that is self-driving and low power - will suffice. We'll note that for getting started, the LSM6DSV16X library on GitHub has examples for this and the other embedded features. (https://github.com/stm32duino/LSM6DSV16X) If you want to try out the new ST LSM6DSV32X 6-Axis IMU with 32 g Accelerometer (https://www.digikey.com/short/bhq3bwhf) or it's smaller sibling, the LSM6DSV16X (https://www.digikey.com/short/524744wt) both are available and in stock from DigiKey right now. Pick the 16g version if you're doing every-day motion sensing and 32g for sports / high speed activities. The eval board is also available and great if you want to start fast and also check out the new Qvar sensor feature (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/det

The Great Search: IrDA Transceiver

This week we had the idea of making a breakout for IrDA data transfer: this is an older infrared bi-directional protocol that can mimics UART-like behavior with RX and TX running at 115.2Kbps. It could be useful for projects where you want to make a link between two boards but don't want the expect, complexity or overhead over RF. Simply transmit and receive whenever the two are within about a meter of distance. This used to be used for simple data transfer between computers, handhelds, or watches. USB C plug breakout prototype testing

We finally got our USB C plug breakout prototypes put together and now its time to test! of course we love to use our own breakouts when verifying functionality so here we're using our switchable USB adapter to check functionality: power, ground, D+ and D-. if a device enumerates we know its good! we tested the CC line by plugging it into an apple wall adapter: they're picky about having a 5.1K resistor on the CC pin. that worked too - so now we're good to book final PCBs. Programmable 12v Cafe Lights Tutorial - Outdoor LED Animations

Full tutorial: https://learn.adafruit.com/programmable-12v-outdoor-cafe-lights/overview Cafe-style light strands with edison bulbs are a beautiful way to decorate your patio. They are a fantastic and classy way to light up any outdoor space. Wineries, bistros, and night markets use them to create a cozy, intimately lit space that's warm and inviting to diners, and they look fabulous in backyards of just about any size. These lights are a programmable, addressable version of the cafe market lights you can find at the hardware store. Add arduino or CircuitPython code and you can turn your lights on in party mode, sending warm rainbow animations across your yard. These lights require 12v power, and also need to hold up in an outdoor environment. This guide will focus on how to power a 5v microcontroller and 12v lights from the same setup, and also show how to use a waterproof enclosure to keep your lights safe from rain and weather. Prototype board with the DS2484

We had a customer request for an I2C to 1-Wire converter: handy for when you don't have a spare GPIO, or maybe you can't do fast pin toggling, or maybe you have a single board computer or desktop that you want to connect to 1-Wire devices like the DS18B20. so we spun up a prototype board with the DS2484 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/analog-devices-inc-maxim-integrated/DS2484R-T/5020823) the latest version from Analog Devices. here i'm testing out my code: with multiple DS18B20's, some TO-92's (https://www.adafruit.com/product/374) and a wired sensor (https://www.adafruit.com/product/381) that i can dunk in a teacup to verify it reports the temperature right. The Great Search: SMT 6mm Tactile Switches

This week we're working on a revision for out RGB LCD Shield kit (https://www.adafruit.com/product/715) which will also be used to revise our RGB LCD Plate (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1109). Originally these were designed as kits - this was before we had our big pick and place machine. But post-chip-shortage, we're thinking it's a good time to revise these to be mostly SMT. We need to find an SMT equivalent of the 'common' 6x6mm tactile switch, with the same height and shape, so that if folks were using the old design in a project or product, the new version will fit just the same. EYE ON NPI - Raytac MDBT50Q-1MV2 Module with Nordic Semiconductor nRF52840

This week's EYE ON NPI is teamwork makin' the dream work - a collaboration between our favorite module makers Raytac (https://www.digikey.com/en/supplier-centers/raytac) and our favorite Bluetooth Low Energy designers, Nordic Semiconductor (https://www.digikey.com/en/supplier-centers/nordic-semiconductor). Together they've created what we think is the best nRF52840 module, the Raytac MDBT50Q-1MV2 (https://www.digikey.com/short/t8hvw1bt). Historically you've had to pick this up direct from Raytac, but now it's stocked by DigiKey which is excellent news for anyone who wants to integrate the powerful nRF52840 with little fuss. The Nordic Semiconductor nRF52840 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF52840-QIAA-R/7725407) is not a new chip, we've been selling the Feather nRF52840 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/4062/9843410) since 2019 and the chip itself was announced in mid 2017 (https://www.nordicsemi.com/Nordic-news/2017/05/Nordic-Semiconductor-introduces-latest-nRF52-Series-SoC). It builds on the popular nRF52832 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF52832-QFAB-R/6051565), a chip with an Arm Cortex M4-F / 512K Flash / 64K SRAM, but with a ton more memory: the '840 has 1MB Flash and 256K SRAM. It also comes with native USB device support, which is new to the nRF series but makes product design easier because DFU and computer-interfacing doesn't require a second chip. The only challenge is that the nRF52840 itself is in a funky QFN package with pads underneath, and multiple rows, which requires either very fine traces, 4-layer boards, plugged vias, or a combination, in order to get to the 'inner' traces. Also, you have to get your antenna tuning right - even though the nRF is very forgiving, it's still extra effort! That's why at Adafruit we have been using Raytac's MDBT50Q-1MV2 Module (https://www.digikey.com/short/t8hvw1bt) for years, in our Feather nRF52840 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/4062/9843410), ItsyBitsy nRF52840 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/4481/11497502) and CLUE board (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/4500/11594501). We like that it pick-and-places cleanly and easily on 2-layer PCBs with 8/8 rule DRC, comes with certifications, and has a couple different built-in antenna options, all tuned and ready. In particular, if you want a larger and/or external antenna check out the MDBT50Q-U1MV2 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/raytac/MDBT50Q-U1MV2/13968055) but we like the chip-antenna version the most. Either way, the module footprint is much easier to work with - you still have pads underneath but they're large, and you can easily fit vias in the unused spots. Just make sure you keep ground clearance around the antenna if you're using an on-module version. If you need tips on schematic and layout, just use our open source hardware design files to guide you - or check Nordic's devZone (https://devzone.nordicsemi.com/). If you've wanted to use the Nordic Semiconductor nRF52840 chip (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF52840-QIAA-R/7725407) for your ultra low-power Bluetooth LE products, but have hesitated due to the effort of integrating the QFN chip, we can't recommend the Raytac MDBT50Q-1MV2 module (https://www.digikey.com/short/t8hvw1bt) enough! And now that it's for sale through DigiKey, you can pick up some at a great price. Order today and you can BLE-ify your next design by tomorrow afternoon.

EYE on NPI - Espressif ESP32-C6 Series Modules

This week's EYE ON NPI is more like an "EYE ON Ladyada's Desk" because while the ESP32-C6 has not yet been featured by DigiKey on their New Products Page (https://digikey.com/new) we're starting to spend a little time checking out this new Espressif chip - the ESP32-C6 series - and the ready-to-use modules available from DigiKey, such as the ESP32-C6 WROOM (https://www.digikey.com/short/8vj302rf). We use the Espressif family of chips (https://www.digikey.com/en/supplier-centers/espressif-systems) in tons of our designs: they're inexpensive, powerful, have excellent low-power sleep modes, and all come with fast and secure WiFi functionality, so they make for excellent IoT devices. Starting with the ESP32 in 2016, a follow-up to their 'accidental microcontroller' the ESP8266, Espressif has focused on Tensilica-based microcontrollers with built in WiFi and/or Bluetooth radio. By combining the silicon for radio and processor, they've been able to come in at disruptively-low pricing (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disruptive_innovation) - with chips ranging from $1-$3 and modules from $2-$6. Over the years they've branched out to include improved BLE, native USB, and many other peripherals like CAN and TFTs. They've also dabbled in RISC-V, adding a co-processor to the ESP-Sx series and finally going 'full RISC-V' in the ESP-Cx series. Now, with the C6, they're adding a new protocol to the mix: in addition to updating to WiFi 6 and BLE 5, the C6 also can talk 2.4GHz 802.15.4 which means it can communicate with Zigbee devices (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zigbee) including Thread and... Matter (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matter_(standard)) an open-source connectivity standard for smart home and Internet of Things devices from the Connectivity Standards Alliance (https://csa-iot.org/) formally the ZigBee Alliance. Matter is, hopefully, not just the latest, but the last attempt at creating a unified standard for home/business/industrial IoT and automation. It is a higher level protocol that runs on top of WiFi, BLE, or Thread - Thread being a replacement for Zigbee that also runs on 802.15.4 radios. That means that if you want to create a Matter device, you can use any of the three transports (https://learn.adafruit.com/alltheiot-transports) supported by the ESP32-C6: WiFi is medium range, medium cost, high power, medium complexity and high data rate: once you set up the access point, and as long as it's plugged into the wall, it tends to work very well. BLE is lower range, low cost, low power and medium complexity since you still need to pair to another device. Thread/ZigBee is medium range, low power, low cost, and high complexity since you need a gateway to use. As of this post/video, the Matter API for Espressif chips is only available through the ESP IDF SDK (https://github.com/espressif/esp-matter), and not in Arduino yet, although there is an open issue being worked on (https://github.com/espressif/arduino-esp32/issues/7432). However, if you aren't up for using the ESP-IDF for programming, you can check out ZeroCode (https://zerocode.espressif.com/) Espressif in-browser code generation, compilation and uploading system. At this time only '2-chip' setups are available for code generation, the 'bare' ESP32-C6 support is coming soon, but we tried out the IoT ExpressLink configs (https://www.espressif.com/en/solutions/device-connectivity/esp-aws-iot-expresslink) which have UART commands for setting up and tearing down the Matter device. After filtering for ExpressLink, we selected the C6 Mini module we have on our Feather prototype. A schematic is generated to show how the module will need to be wired for the UART access. Then you can program it directly in the browser. The unique Matter identifier is turned into a QR code: you can scan this with your mobile phone to add the device to your home's Matter-hub. Finally - check out the AT command reference (https://docs.aws.amazon.com/pdfs/iot-expresslink/latest/gettingstartedguide/expresslink-gsg.pdf) for how to start the Matter subsystem and send/receive data. As Thread/Matter gets adopted as the next-gen IoT transport protocol, the Espressif ESP32-C6 (https://www.digikey.com/short/8vj302rf) is positioned to be the perfect module for fast integration and low cost. With pre-certified and encased modules, plus a ready-to-go SDK, you can spin up a prototype product in just a couple days. We recommend starting with the ESP32-C6-WROOM-1-N8 module to start, with tons of flash memory, you can always downgrade if you end up only needing 4MB of Flash. There's also an affordable ESP32-C6-DevKitC (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/espressif-systems/ESP32-C6-DEVKITC-1-N8/17728861) that has all the basics on already for instant bring-up. Order from DigiKey today to get your ESP32-C6's by tomorrow afternoon so you can be ready for the future of IoT with WiFi, BLE 5 and Thread/
