EYE ON NPI - Diodes Incorporated PAM8019E Class-D Audio Amplifier and Headphone Driver
This week's EYE ON NPI is loud and proud - it's the Diodes Incorporated PAM8019E Class-D Audio Amplifier and Headphone Driver (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/d/diodes/pam8019e-class-d-audio-amplifiers), a combo audio amplifier that will add high quality analog audio output to your next design without breaking the bank. We've stocked and used the PAM series of audio amplifiers for over a decade, one of our best sellers is the PAM8302 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2130) breakout which is a monophonic class D amp for basic projects. Things we like about it: its very inexpensive, it's rock solid, 3~5V power, hard to 'pop' and can drive 4~8 ohm output. But it's only one channel and we often get asked if we can stock a stereo Class D. Also, it's pretty common for us to get requests for headphone drivers. The PAM8019E (https://www.digikey.com/short/b3r00dw5) can do both, and has a lot of nice little details. First up, this is an analog in/out amplifier - no PDM or I2S or TDM. So this is good for either all-analog setups or when you have already converted your digital audio to 'line level', about 1Vpp. Since it's stereo out, there's also stereo input: don't worry about DC bias because you can couple in with 1uF and it will internally bias to half-VDD. Unlike the PAM8302 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/diodes-incorporated/PAM8302AASCR/4033281), this isn't differential input, reference is ground. You can use either the Headphone amp or Speaker amp, but not both: the selection is done with with a digital input pin which will do a smooth pop-free hand off. For the outputs, there's the stereo Class D outputs. These come as two tied-load bridges (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridged_and_paralleled_amplifiers#Bridged_amplifier) which means you can just tie the two sides of each speaker to positive/negative without any capacitors. Class D is an efficient amplification architecture (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Class-D_amplifier) and if done at a high enough frequency - in this case around 400KHz - the inductive load of the speaker acts as a filter so no separate RLC is required. For EMI purposes, the datasheet recommends a simple 100MHz 600ohm ferrite bead plus 1uF capacitor just to reduce the sharp square waves. For headphone, the chip uses a Class AB (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_amplifier_classes#Class_AB). These are going to give cleaner output because there's no intermediate PWM stage: speakers tend not to be good enough to notice the hiss added from Class D, but headphones are much more sensitive. Also, at the ~50mW output we're talking about, there's not a lot of benefit to optimizing power. Since headphones are by design 'single ended', you will need 220uF caps on the output for high-pass filtering. Some modern audio amps have a 'floating' ground generated to sink the current for cap-less output but these tend to be more expensive and also wouldn't be compatible with line-level inputs. Some nice details we like to see in an amp, especially one this affordable: spread-spectrum so the high frequency PWM isn't centered on one spike, undervoltage-lockout, short-circuit on all outputs, pop-free, non-clip power limiting and separate not-in-line audio level selection. The last one is particularly nice because on the PAM8302 we have to put an analog rheostat in-line with the input pins to reduce the gain from 15x down to 1x or 2x. This would require a stereo pot, which can get scratchy and fail over time. On the PAM8019E (https://www.digikey.com/short/b3r00dw5), the gain is set with a DC voltage which means you can set it with a potentiometer or a DAC output, and you don't have to worry about jitter or scratchiness because there's hysteresis over 64 points. We've already ordered 10 pieces of the Diodes Inc PAM8019E (https://www.digikey.com/short/b3r00dw5) to design a breakout. DigiKey has tons in stock so we recommend you buy some too, at 34 cents a-piece, at reel quantity, it's hard to say no! They're available in 3x3mm or 4x4mm package sizes, both are QFN-20. Order today and you can be bumpin' and boppin' with either speakers or headphones by tomorrow. afternoon.

Ladyada tries out ChatGPT Canvas for Arduino library writing: A request- tabs & context, please!
We sat down this morning to try and crank out a library for the VCNL4200 light/proximity sensor (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/vishay-semiconductor-opto-division/VCNL4200/7394601) - these sorts of chips always have a trillion twiddly registers and are a bear to write. Phil recommended that Limor try out OpenAI's new ChatGPT Canvas (https://openai.com/index/introducing-canvas/). It's fast! And has very few errors. We like to go through each register one by one, add the typedefs and #defines, then the setter/getter functions, and finally the arduino ino 'sketch' to actually test and verify. However, with three files - header, cpp, and ino - canvas can get really confused about which file we're editing and what it's called. Our request! We would love it if there were tabs for 'fixed' file names, and then clicking on the tab set the context for the code we're collaborating on. The Great Search: Single NOT / inverting gate for 5V signal in SC70-5
The TM1814 LEDs we've been looking at this week require an inverted NeoPixel-like signal. While it's not too hard to make a custom library to deal with the prefix bytes, the inversion is a little annoying since you'd have to rewrite a lot of assembly. So, for our level shifter board we designed, let's also add an inverter: It will use 5V power and logic, and we'd like a small SC70-5 package so we can keep the board as compact as possible. EYE ON NPI - ams OSRAM TMF8806 Single-Zone direct Time of Flight sensor
This week's EYE ON NPI is having Too Much Fun - it's the ams OSRAM TMF8806 Single-Zone direct Time of Flight sensor (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/ams/tmf8806-single-zone-tof) the latest in ams' series of ToF sensors. This sensor may seem like "YAToF" but there's a few things that caught our eye. One is the excellent pricing, about $2 in quantity. Another is the simplicity of function: unlike many ToF sensors, there isn't a massive firmware stack required to load on each boot. Instead, the default firmware is in ROM for a lightweight interface. We've stocked ToF sensors (https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=tof) for quite a while - mostly the ST VL series. These sensors have developed quite a bit over the years, starting with the 100mm-range VL6180 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/3316) and continuing onto multi-grid devices that we've covered on previous EYE ON NPI's (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PocFz427NE). The way these work is by blasting laser pulses out of a VCSEL (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vertical-cavity_surface-emitting_laser) which then bounces off of the target and the 'time of flight' is measured in the pF range to give accuracy and range. Easy to describe, but non-trivial to implement...the light doesn't bounce off perfectly, and a lot of individualy measurements need to be taken and then averaged - this is called the histogram. The histogram data is filtered in software to toss outliers and double-bounces, to get the 'true' calibrated distance. And it has to do this dozens of times a second. The complexity of the algorithm is what gives each product its accuracy, precision, repeatability and range - so its no surprise that its running on an in-package microcontroller. However, as the sensors have gotten more advanced, the firmware process has also gotten complex: for many ToF sensors you have to 'load' the firmware algorithm on boot (https://github.com/STMicroelectronics/stm32-vl53l5cx/blob/main/modules/vl53l5cx_buffers.h#L33) and even if you don't, its a non-trivial port to other platform. That's what caught our eye for the ams OSRAM TMF8806 (https://www.digikey.com/short/f9v8w20d), the description specifies "No FW download is required to operate this device, saving host MCU memory space, reducing startup time, and saving overall system power by enabling customers to quickly start the device and make measurements in a few milliseconds". The interface is trivial, they even provide the I2C commands required to boot, load firmware, and perform a reading, its about a dozen commands. For hardware, it's also a nice and simple integration - with a small OLGA package, I2C communication, and 1.8V or 3.3V logic level. One thing to watch for, the sensor comes with 3 'modes' - short, medium and long range. Minimum range for all of these is 10mm, the max is 200, 2500 or 5000mm. And,while the sensor can do 5000mm, it requires pretty specific calibration and lighting. The default range is 2500 and we recommend sticking to that if you can because then you get the benefit of built-in configuration and calibration for speed/simplicity. To get started fast, ams OSRAM supplies multiple drivers for Arduino or other C microcontrollers (https://github.com/ams-OSRAM/tmf8806_driver_arduino), generic Python (https://github.com/ams-OSRAM/tmf8806_driver_python) and Linux kernel (https://github.com/ams-OSRAM/tmf8806_driver_linux). You can also grab an eval board in 'shield' format that has a microcontroller for plug-and play usage (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/ams-osram-usa-inc/TMF8806-EVM-EB-SHIELD/24768739) Add low power, super fast ToF sensing to your next design with the ams OSRAM TMF8806 Single-Zone direct Time of Flight sensor (https://www.digikey.com/short/f9v8w20d), in stock for immediate shipment from DigiKey! Order today and it will ship to you at pico-second speed, so that you can be integrating it by tomorrow morning.

RGBW cafe lights with TM1814 chips 🌈💡✨
More! We got a set of weatherproof cafe lights with RGBW LEDs for a 'pure' white color light. However, they don't use the WS281x chipset for the control signal. Instead, it's TM1814, which is kind of similar but has a few key differences. One is you have to send an 8-byte 'global brightness' setting to start, and then you have to continuously send a signal over every 400ms, and to top it off, the signal is inverted! After some PIO twiddling, we did get them working pretty nicely with an RP2040 https://learn.adafruit.com/intro-to-rp2040-pio-with-circuitpython/using-pio-to-drive-a-neopixel Make us think - we should craft a NeoPixel signal shifter board with an optional inverted output! The Great Search: Ultra-thin RG-174 Coax
"Hi, I'm looking for the thinnest possible coax wire and found that you used to have this listed at 1.2mm diameter. All the other RG-174 cable I've found online is 2.8mm diameter. Just curious where you found it and if you would ever stock it again. Or any other info that would help me search for this 1.2mm version." This week, we received a request for how to find ultra-thin RG-174 cable, such as the one we used to stock (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2059). Note that this isn't stranded or solid core wire; it's a 2-conductor coax, as thin as 16 AWG wire. We no longer carry this cabling, but DigiKey does! Let's take a look at how to find RF coax wiring at any length and width. EYE ON NPI - MaxLinear half duplex RS-485 transceivers
This week's EYE ON NPI is Gon' Give It To Ya (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGx6K90TmCI), it's the MaxLinear half duplex RS-485 transceivers (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/m/maxlinear/rs485-422-serial-transceiver) an easy way to convert your every day UART serial connection to a RS-485 or RS-422 data link layer (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_link_layer). We've seen RS-485 most often in DMX512 lighting networks (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DMX512), where there are up to 512 lights/devices connected up to a control board 'universe'. Each one is individually settable. While these could have used CAN bus, or Ethernet, DMX ended up using RS-485 for simplicity and low cost. It's super easy and inexpensive to convert between UART and RS-485 using a MaxLinear chip because the encoded data is the same as 8N1 serial. Each line of RS-485 consists of a differential signal pair, A + B, where A is inverted from B and B's logic level is the bit being sent. This means it can go farther and more reliably than RS-232 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RS-232) which is single-ended and just has wide voltage swings. However, instead of having ground, RX and TX for connection between two data ports - DCE and DTE - RS-485 cables as used in a DMX setup have the A and B wires plus ground. This means RS-485 going to survive signal degradation better than RS-232 but the downside is its uni-directional. That's fine for lighting rigs because you just want to tell the light "turn blue" or fog machine "on". RS-485 is also driven quite fast, the DMX standardizes on 250kbps comfortably, whereas RS-232 does best at 115.2kbps or less. If you really want, it is possible to convert the line into a bi-directional setup as long as the transmitter knows when to expect signal from a remote device. Simply sent the Driver Output Enable pin of the MxL8321x (https://www.digikey.com/short/dm7zp1hf) low to tri-state the output driver buffer, then set Receiver Output Enable line low, this will swap the device from being a transmitter to a receiver. The light on the other side will do the opposite, setting both pins high to turn into a transmitter. It can then send signal back down the line. Technically this is the difference between RS-485 and RS-422 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RS-422), which is really just the differential-ized RS-232 part without output/input enable and thus does not have the ability to change 'direction'. For RS-422 you'll probably want two MxL8321x's (https://www.digikey.com/short/dm7zp1hf), one for each direction. While used often for DMX512, you don't have to use the DMX protocol with your MxL8321x RS-485 converters: after all it's just a new physical layer for UART serial, so if you have any design that already uses serial: GPS, MIDI, microcontroller communication, radio modules, you can pop these in between for no-fuss extension from a few inches to many meters, up to 500kbps. The MxL8321x uses 3.3v or 5V power/logic so its easy to integrate into any existing design. The family also comes in a few package sizes and speed variants, from the MxL83211's (https://www.digikey.com/short/55bp41c9) 250kbps to the MxL83214's 50Mbps (https://www.digikey.com/short/zrb42hdh). Pick the slowest one you can use to get the best line drive strength to reduce EMI and reflections. You'll also need to set up a terminator (https://www.ti.com/lit/an/snla044b/snla044b.pdf) on the end of the transmission line. If you're looking to add RS-485 or RS-422 support to your next design, MaxLinear is here to Give You What You Really Want (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0MdAbsd0HmI) with their wide range of half duplex RS-485 transceivers. And best of all, DigiKey has them all in stock for instant shipment to your door. Order today and you'll have your MxL8321x in hand by tomorrow morning for instant integration.

DVI output adapter for RP2350 Feather HSTX port 🔌🖥️💡
The RP2350 Feather has an FPC output connector for accessing the HSTX - high-speed transmission - peripheral. This lets us drive DVI displays really easily! Today, we got the prototype PCBs for our HSTX to DVI adapter board; after connecting up a 22-pin FPC cable, we can test out DVI driving via CircuitPython. With HSTX, we don't need to overclock or use PIO, and there's a lot more RAM on the RP2350, so we can easily do 320x240 with 16-bit color and have plenty of SRAM left over. It would be neat if we could do DVI from the PSRAM as a framebuffer at some point for really big displays! #adafruit #circuitpython #rp2350 Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

EYE ON NPI – E200 Series E-Stop Pushbutton Switches
This week's EYE ON NPI will make you Stop! In the Naaaaaaaaaaame of Love (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JiS02O4fEk) but will never break your heart - it's E-Switch's E200 Series E-Stop Pushbutton Switches (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/e/e-switch/e200-series-e-stop-pushbutton-switches). These are two small emergency stop switches that are durable, ergonomic, safe and easy to use! Both have immediate "slam to stop" and "twist to re-start" functionality. One has a classic mushroom-domed top and the other is a longer grippy wheel that comes with a optional center illumination by neon bulb or LED. Just this week we were talking with someone working in safety design and recommended The Design of Everyday Things (https://jnd.org/books/the-design-of-everyday-things-revised-and-expanded-edition/) a book that covers how to design 'obvious' things in the real world - like how doors pull when entering and push to exit a building, so that folks trying to escape a building in a panic don't get trapped. A lot of the design decisions have been learned by hard lessons: people getting injured or dying... that's why we have things like building codes and engineering certifications such as those for medical devices (http://sunnyday.mit.edu/papers/therac.pdf). Even when we do our best to design safety margins, redundancies and interlocks, there's always the chance that something will go wrong. Especially when designing robots, machinery, lasers, or some other "Machine that does not know the difference between metal and flesh, nor does it care" (https://www.reddit.com/r/Machinists/comments/sg9wct/i_made_a_sticker_for_the_lathe/) That's where you definitely want to add in an emergency stop switch, also known as a kill switch. Wire this up in series with your main power input and no matter what happens with your firmware or interlock or other secondary safety features, you will cut the power instantly. The brilliance in this design is that you push or slam down on it to open the contacts but then you need to twist to reconnect. This means folks can't accidentally turn it on again by pressing again, there's no chance of it bouncing closed, and you can immediately verify the state by pressing it again. The E-Switch's E200 Series E-Stop Pushbutton Switches (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/e/e-switch/e200-series-e-stop-pushbutton-switches) are both rated for 250VAC 5A, 125VAC 8A or 24DC 6A with IP65 dust-tight (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_code). Simply drill a 16mm hole in your enclosure to mount. The contacts are shrouded to minimize risk of cross-contact, use 0.11"/2.8mm spade quick contacts (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/te-connectivity-amp-connectors/2-520083-2/289211) to connect. Whichever variant you choose, you can add a stylish kill switch to your next design from a trusted switch manufacturer that will keep your users and products safe from each other. And best of all, DigiKey has both E-Switch E200's (https://www.digikey.com/short/5tvqhj4b) in stock right now for immediate shipment! Order today and you'll be E-Stopping by tomorrow afternoon. And check out the manufacturer's video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TY-6tbsB0E

Doom Keyboard demo
Play DOOM directly from the flash memory of a KB2040 embedded INSIDE THE KEYBOARD! John Park Learn Guide: https://learn.adafruit.com/doom-keeb Press the custom DOOM button to launch. A secret USB hub mounted inside the keyboard does the trick of allowing both the keyboard and the Adafruit KB2040 KeeBoar connect to your Windows computer over a single USB cable. CircuitPython watches the NeoKey button and launches a tiny ZDoom.exe when pressed. The host computer doesn't need anything installed at all! DS2842-800 is eight times the 1-wireness of DS2484
We've got the DS2484 in stock, that our I2C-to-1Wire converter board https://www.adafruit.com/product/5976 and we also now have a prototype breakout for the DS2842S-800 which has 8 selectable channels. on one hand, you can always have multiple 1-wire sensors on a single 1-wire bus, but you have to deal with ROM addressing to know which is measuring what. by having 8 separate channels you can be more sure about what each sensor is sensing, and it was pretty easy to add support - just one more function for adjusting the active channel. The DS2842-800, with eight selectable channels, simplifies 1-wire sensor management compared to the DS2484. Adafruit stocks both and has a prototype breakout for the DS2842S-800, ensuring precise sensor readings and easy channel adjustment. #Adafruit #1WireTech #DS2842 Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------
