EYE ON NPI – E200 Series E-Stop Pushbutton Switches
This week's EYE ON NPI will make you Stop! In the Naaaaaaaaaaame of Love (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JiS02O4fEk) but will never break your heart - it's E-Switch's E200 Series E-Stop Pushbutton Switches (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/e/e-switch/e200-series-e-stop-pushbutton-switches). These are two small emergency stop switches that are durable, ergonomic, safe and easy to use! Both have immediate "slam to stop" and "twist to re-start" functionality. One has a classic mushroom-domed top and the other is a longer grippy wheel that comes with a optional center illumination by neon bulb or LED. Just this week we were talking with someone working in safety design and recommended The Design of Everyday Things (https://jnd.org/books/the-design-of-everyday-things-revised-and-expanded-edition/) a book that covers how to design 'obvious' things in the real world - like how doors pull when entering and push to exit a building, so that folks trying to escape a building in a panic don't get trapped. A lot of the design decisions have been learned by hard lessons: people getting injured or dying... that's why we have things like building codes and engineering certifications such as those for medical devices (http://sunnyday.mit.edu/papers/therac.pdf). Even when we do our best to design safety margins, redundancies and interlocks, there's always the chance that something will go wrong. Especially when designing robots, machinery, lasers, or some other "Machine that does not know the difference between metal and flesh, nor does it care" (https://www.reddit.com/r/Machinists/comments/sg9wct/i_made_a_sticker_for_the_lathe/) That's where you definitely want to add in an emergency stop switch, also known as a kill switch. Wire this up in series with your main power input and no matter what happens with your firmware or interlock or other secondary safety features, you will cut the power instantly. The brilliance in this design is that you push or slam down on it to open the contacts but then you need to twist to reconnect. This means folks can't accidentally turn it on again by pressing again, there's no chance of it bouncing closed, and you can immediately verify the state by pressing it again. The E-Switch's E200 Series E-Stop Pushbutton Switches (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/e/e-switch/e200-series-e-stop-pushbutton-switches) are both rated for 250VAC 5A, 125VAC 8A or 24DC 6A with IP65 dust-tight (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_code). Simply drill a 16mm hole in your enclosure to mount. The contacts are shrouded to minimize risk of cross-contact, use 0.11"/2.8mm spade quick contacts (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/te-connectivity-amp-connectors/2-520083-2/289211) to connect. Whichever variant you choose, you can add a stylish kill switch to your next design from a trusted switch manufacturer that will keep your users and products safe from each other. And best of all, DigiKey has both E-Switch E200's (https://www.digikey.com/short/5tvqhj4b) in stock right now for immediate shipment! Order today and you'll be E-Stopping by tomorrow afternoon. And check out the manufacturer's video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TY-6tbsB0E

DS2842-800 is eight times the 1-wireness of DS2484
We've got the DS2484 in stock, that our I2C-to-1Wire converter board https://www.adafruit.com/product/5976 and we also now have a prototype breakout for the DS2842S-800 which has 8 selectable channels. on one hand, you can always have multiple 1-wire sensors on a single 1-wire bus, but you have to deal with ROM addressing to know which is measuring what. by having 8 separate channels you can be more sure about what each sensor is sensing, and it was pretty easy to add support - just one more function for adjusting the active channel. The DS2842-800, with eight selectable channels, simplifies 1-wire sensor management compared to the DS2484. Adafruit stocks both and has a prototype breakout for the DS2842S-800, ensuring precise sensor readings and easy channel adjustment. #Adafruit #1WireTech #DS2842 Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

EYE ON NPI - STMicroelectronics' ST25 NFC Smart Tag Set
This week's EYE ON NPI has some Nice Freakin' Chips - it's STMicroelectronics' NFC Smart Tag Set, (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/stmicroelectronics/st25-tag-bag-ut1-nfc-tag-set) with a cornucopia of labels, stickers, cards and tags that feature ST's Near Field Communication (NFC) chipsets, each with a matching antenna. This 18-piece kit is a great way to evaluate the different materials that NFC tags can be embedded in as well as verify that your NFC reader chipset works at the desired distances. NFC is built on top of the 'RFID' tags you're probably familiar with, unlike read-only RFID tags, NFC has bi-directional communication which means you can write values to the tags which makes them universal. For example, instead of having to manage a separate database that maps the 64-bit RFID value to a product SKU, the SKU itself can be written directly into the non-volatile memory on chip. Stuff like urls, timestamps, account balances, and sensor logs can go straight into the chip for anyone to access - or only for users with the correct password-unlock-code. NFC tags, stickers and cards are an upgrade from iButtons (https://www.analog.com/en/product-category/ibutton-products.html) -- less clunky, do not need to make electrical contact, magnetic stripe cards (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_card) -- can hold more information, are less flakey, don't delaminate or demagnetize, or barcodes (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barcode) -- need good light for optical reading, can be sluggish, very limited amount of data. Since NFC chips have bi-directional communication, plus built in encryption and writable memory, without any battery, they need to harvest energy from RF waves. That means that the the antenna is used for both data and energy and needs to be both tuned to the chip's internal capacitance as well as maximized in order to get the most E field possible (https://www.st.com/resource/en/application_note/an2866-how-to-design-a-1356-mhz-customized-antenna-for-st25-nfc--rfid-tags-stmicroelectronics.pdf). So, in general, the bigger the antenna the 'better' performance you'll get: shorter taps, less finicky alignment, and farther functionality. However - of course, you've got a bigger surface area for the tag. Here's the sizes that come in the ST NFC Smart Tag Set (https://www.digikey.com/short/rf5ddb3c): Three ST25TV02KC (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/stmicroelectronics/ST25TV02KC-TFH3/18085938), 23 pF, tamper enabled label, 35 mm diameter Three ST25TN01K (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/stmicroelectronics/ST25TN01K-AFH5/15775849), 50 pF, smart label, 30 mm diameter Three ST25TV02KC (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/stmicroelectronics/ST25TV02KC-TFH3/18085938), 99 pF, smart label, 17 mm diameter Three ST25TV02KC (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/stmicroelectronics/ST25TV02KC-TFH3/18085938), 23 pF, smart label, 50 mm x 50 mm Three ST25TV02KC (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/stmicroelectronics/ST25TV02KC-TFH3/18085938), 23 pF, on-metal tag, 30 mm x 30 mm One ST25TV02KC (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/stmicroelectronics/ST25TV02KC-TFH3/18085938), 23 pF, button tag, 22 mm diameter One ST25TN01K (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/stmicroelectronics/ST25TN01K-AFH5/15775849), 50 pF, card, 85 mm x 54 mm One ST25TV02KC (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/stmicroelectronics/ST25TV02KC-TFH3/18085938), 23 pF, NFC field detector with LED indicator, 85 mm x 54 mm A nifty feature we saw in the datasheet for the ST25 (https://www.st.com/en/nfc/st25tv-series-nfc-tags.html) is the "tamper detection" capability. Normally to make sure that the end-recipient can detect whether a box was opened in transit is to use a tamper detection sticker that tears when removed. Instead of needing two stickers, or even just relying on a human to properly detect the tampering, the ST25 chips have two extra contacts that can connect to a thin wire switch. When the sticker is moved the thin wire is broken and the chip will detect it. Since we can use encryption/authentication on the ST25, the tamper sticker tag can't be replaced. And, when using a digital logging system, it will automatically record the tamper without a person being able to fudge the reading. If you want to get started with integrating STMicroelectronics' ST25T NFC chips (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/rfid-rf-access-monitoring-ics/880?s=N4IgjCBcoLQCxVAYygMwIYBsDOBTANCAG4B2aWehA9lANogDsAnGKyALqEAOALlCCAC%20woA) or tags into your product authentication/identification, access or inventory management, data logging, or asset tracking, then the NFC Smart Tag Set (https://www.digikey.com/short/rf5ddb3c) is a quick and easy way to get a wide range of stickers and cards to try out. Order today and DigiKey will pick, pack and post your order you'll have these tags in hand by tomorrow afternoon.

The Great Search: USB Key Enclosures
This weekend we designed a simple "Trinkey" board for the ESP32-C6 (https://www.digikey.com/short/c7f7qzm8) and we thought it would be kinda cute if it came in a clear enclosure that would protect the components. We then remembered that you can get some 'USB key' enclosures ready to go from DigiKey, at very good prices! Let's check out what's available and pick one for our design. EYE ON NPI - Würth Elektronik's RGB WL-ICLED Integrated Controller Within LED
This week's EYE ON NPI looks miiiiiighty familiar with those of us who love our colorful lights, it's Würth Elektronik's RGB WL-ICLED Integrated Controller Within LED (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/w/wurth-electronics/wl-icled-integrated-controller-within-led). WE's take on the 'smart LED' has taken over the electronics industry over the past 15 years. These ubiquitous LEDs can save you time, pins, and cost by simplifying the addition of up to a couple-dozen colorful LEDs, especially when the PCB size is at a premium. Back in my day, if you wanted to add a lot of colorful LEDs to a design, you'd have to use a dedicated LED driver chip. That is, unless your microcontroller had tons of pins, and 10mA drive current - and even then there's a total current-draw limit for the chip package. We still stock some breakouts for these like the TLC5947 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1429) a 'chainable' SPI board that could drive 8 RGB LEDs and PWM them all for you, often with a set-able constant-current. There's still need for chips like this, but they're often kinda large, and they're not free, so using them was not a light matter. Then came the first - or close to the first - low cost chainable LED driver: the LPD8806 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/306). We wrote a library for this chip in 2011 (https://github.com/adafruit/LPD8806/commits/master/?after=1951478c2c2a8317feab9997cdfddba3728a245a+69), the way this chip worked is it could control two RGB LEDs per, with all PWM handled internally and you only needed 2 pins! This was inexpensive and worked great, but the chips were still a bit large, 14-SOICs. They were superseded by the WS2811 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1060) which came up with using a Manchester encoding (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manchester_code) for transport over a single line. These used even less space, and only a single pin, with an SOIC-8 package. However, the real ingenuity is when folks realized they could put the chip INSIDE the LED: and thus was born what we call "NeoPixel" (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/result?s=N4IgTCBcDaIHYFMD2AHAlgDwQGxAXQF8g) a fully chainable smart LED that only uses one pin and no external components. Now all's been right in the world, with dozens of different shapes, configurations and sizes of 'WS2812-compatible' LEDs. But there was one thing missing: a reliable source of smart LEDs. And we should know because we use a lot of these chips: and we try to warn folks that low cost LEDs have differing LED color and brightnesses, are hard to solder and rework, and suffer high failure rates in the field. Worst of all, when one fails all the ones down the line also fail! Until today you just had to cross your fingers and hope that the reel you got was from a 'good batch'. That's why we were excited to see Würth Elektronik's RGB WL-ICLED in DigiKey's NPI list, because WE is known for high quality, reliable products. Unlike most NeoPixel compatibles, this datasheet specifies the LED brightnesses and spectra. It also has RoHS, REACh and Halogen compliance. Finally, you know you'll be getting consistent quality, where each LED solders just as well as last week's or last year's batch. The WL-ICLEDs are available in 4 sizes, including the common 5x5mm and 2x2mm. Würth Elektronik also designed a cool FeatherWing (https://github.com/WurthElektronik/FeatherWings/tree/main/ICLEDFeatherWing) with hundreds of the 2x2mm ICLEDs to demo how to display animations, text, and graphics. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tCo7FSO1Gk) If you want a NeoPixel compatible LED, with trace-ability, high reliability and known functionality check out Würth Elektronik's RGB WL-ICLED (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/w/wurth-electronics/wl-icled-integrated-controller-within-led) available right now at DigiKey! Order today and you'll get your ready-to-assemble rainbows by tomorrow afternoon.

The Great Search: Vertical USB Type C replacement for IKEA VINDRIKTING
This week we're working a bit with BlitzCityDIY on a project to replace the innards of a IKEA VINDRIKTING PM2.5 sensor (https://learn.adafruit.com/ikea-vindriktning-hack-with-qt-py-esp32-s3-and-adafruit-io) with our own board featuring an ESP32-S2 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/espressif-systems/ESP32-S2-MINI-2-N4R2/16591895) so that it can be IoTified with ease. Ideally we will reuse the same enclosure - so we have to have matching connectors! The challenging one is the the vertical USB C, because we have very little clearance, so we need to find a near-exact match that doesn't have excess plastic. Otherwise, it won't fit into the case properly. Let's visit DigiKey to find a good match.
