EYE on NPI - Raspberry Pi Compute Module 5
This week's EYE ON NPI is an EYE ON A PI - it's the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 5 (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/r/raspberry-pi/raspberry-pi-compute-module-5), the latest update to the easily embeddable mini modules that make industrial developers happy by giving them all the power of a Pi 5 in a ready-to-go pluggable solution. The Raspberry Pi computer launched with the goal of bringing low cost computing to the education market (https://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereporters/rorycellanjones/2011/05/a_15_computer_to_inspire_young.html) and through the Pi Foundation (https://www.raspberrypi.org/) they still have that charitable goal (https://static.raspberrypi.org/files/about/RaspberryPiFoundationStrategy2025.pdf) while also spinning off the manufacturing/sales company into the Trading Company which went public this year (https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/what-would-an-ipo-mean-for-the-raspberry-pi-foundation/). The first few Raspberry Pi computers were 'all in one' style (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1344), with power, GPIO, Video and Audio output, USB, Ethernet, and Micro SD card storage (https://raspi.tv/2018/new-raspberry-pi-family-photo-including-pi3a-plus-zero-wh). Eventually enough folks asked for an enclosure-friendly version that would allow an "I/O" board to be designed with the ports in a different arrangement - the big-sized-Pis have them arrayed over 3 sides. To solve this conundrum, and to satisfy the growing industrial/commercial market, the Pi engineers designed the Compute Module 1 which is still available (https://www.raspberrypi.com/products/compute-module-1/). This clever SODIMM packaged board has all the GPIO and peripheral pins on a plug-in connector so you can slot it into an existing design securely and easily - SODIMM sockets (https://www.digikey.com/short/rz9cdjrn) come both vertical and horizontal. This was later updated to the CM3 and CM3+ (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/raspberry-pi/SC0149/9866293) which was on par with the Pi 3 instead of the Pi 1, with significantly higher computational power. However, perhaps because they wanted a more compact module, or to support high-frequency signals better, the next generation of Compute Module 4's (https://www.digikey.com/short/wffzdn0b) came in a flat rectangular shape with dual 100-pin Hirose contacts. (https://www.digikey.com/short/5m8djf0t) Another nice thing that happened with the CM4 is it became available in dozens of configurations: 1/2/4/8 GB RAM, SD or 8/16/32GB MMC, and with or without WiFi/BLE/BT. This allowed commercial users to go with the 'lowest cost option' needed to fulfill their requirements - whereas the Pi 4 comes in only 3 or 4 RAM options (https://www.digikey.com/short/4pn5vw24). The ready-to-go software - no kernel compiling or OpenWRT configuration required! Long-term hardware support and low prices pushed the CM4 into more and more designs. Which brings us to the NPI of the week, the Compute Module 5 (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/r/raspberry-pi/raspberry-pi-compute-module-5)! The CM5 is a big upgrade, with quad A76s at 2.4GHz for a 2x computing upgrade, increased RAM options of up to 16G, increased MMC option of 64GB, USB 3.0 ports, PCIe and RP1 hardware interfacing with PIO support (https://www.raspberrypi.com/news/piolib-a-userspace-library-for-pio-control/). If you have an existing CM4 design, you can easily upgrade or update to the new hotness. If you're new to integrating Raspberry pi, then while you may think of the Pi as a hobby/school computer, that isn't necessarily true anymore with 72% of Pi computers sold going into commercial/industrial use (https://investors.raspberrypi.com/ipo/documents/1). That means you can be confident that you'll get consistent pricing and availability for a long time so that you can work on designing the rest of your product for the CM series to plug into. And like the CM4, the CM5 is available in a variety of configurations and prices, from $45 to $135. Raspberry Pi Compute Module 5's are currently only available for pre-order (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/r/raspberry-pi/raspberry-pi-compute-module-5) , with estimated ship times in Q1 of 2025 to DigiKey - and the moment DigiKey gets some in stock, they'll ship your pre-order instantly so you can get integrating with the Pi ecosystem the very next day. Don't wait till release day because they'll sell out instantly! Instead, when you pre-order from DigiKey, your order goes into a queue and you'll get first-come-first-served prioritization. USB C + HDMI combo panel-mount cable sample 🔌🖥️
We got this nifty panel-mount cable with a combo action: both USB C and DVI/HDMI connectors on both ends. This could be handy for single-board computers like Raspberry Pi's or our RP2040/RP2350 boards with DVI outputs (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5710). Since we're testing our Metro RP2350 with HSTX/DVI output anyway, this is a good time to test the cable out - some things we test with USB C cables: verify it enumerates in all 4 orientations (ya never know) and check it with a USB PD sink that requests various voltages. So far, so good; we'll get some of these into the shop in the next few weeks. Metro RP2350 is wrappin' up testing ✨🐢
This week we got our Metro RP2350 boards (https://blog.adafruit.com/2024/11/11/metro-rp2350-now-with-bigger-better-rp2350b/) back and after fixing the pin direction and rerouting (https://www.instagram.com/adafruit/p/DC2U7mdyf9W) the whole thing, it came up and pretty much works perfectly! Just one component needed a swap - we were able to test all GPIO, analog inputs, MicroSD slot, PSRAM, LEDs & NeoPixel, user button, I2C/SPI/UART, aaand power supplies. The 5V supply is great, we got a nice clean 5V out at 2A+ from 12V DC in. The last thing to check is the HSTX port, which gives us DVI access, and it works, thanks to this festive turtle demo! (https://learn.adafruit.com/circuitpython-turtle-graphics) We're aiming to get this into the shop before the end of the year, wouldn't that be smashing? TMC2209 stepper motor driver board testing 🤖⚙️🔋
We've been testing the Trinamic/Maxim/Analog/WeylandYutani TMC2209 (https://www.digikey.com/short/8r5m38h8) breakout we designed, and it's working great - the step/dir interface plus the micro-step select allows a microcontroller to control a stepper with just GPIO and true-to-its-name it is a very silent stepper driver, much quieter than the A4988 (https://www.digikey.com/short/tfjt88dd)! There are a few different I/O pins on the TMC: Index tells you when a full step is completed, which is handy to know when you want to change stepper modes on the fly. Diag lets you know when a power or motor failure has occurred. It can also tell when the motor has stalled if it's configured to. Finally, and most interestingly, is the UART interface: this unidirectional pin lets you read and write configuration registers, set 1-128 microsteps, change current limiting, and detect stalls for 'auto homing'. So far, everything works; we're just going to swap the direction of the potentiometer so it twists clockwise to increase the current limit and book PCBs! The Great Search - Compact 3.3V Step-Down with 24V Input and 0.5A output
We're wrapping up our WLED board design (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4Ybd8CdQYM) and the last part we need to spec out is the 3.3V regulator. Since we are utilizing USB PD or DC in, we could be running from 5V ~ 24VDC. For the 5V output, we only need a few mA, so we're going to pick the same LDO family we sourced earlier (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_0Kua2UZCs) but for the 3.3V we need at least 500mA of current for the ESP32 chip, so a switching supply is necessary! Let's find something inexpensive with 1A+ output, 24V+ input, and we're also going to need something small so minimal passives and high frequency. Ladyada's desk gets a scope cart
We've always wanted a portable scope cart (https://vintagetek.org/scope-carts/) for our workspace to have our test equipment either by the desk for firmware work or at the soldering worktable for rework debugging. At our new office, we finally have space for one! We picked up this 'dental cart' (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DM8P2PDT) - It is not super fancy, but it is metal, and it came together fairly easily. We like the mini top shelf for the scope and the second shelf underneath for the power supply and electronic load. The drawer can hold leads or probes. We've locked it next to our desk so we have more desktop space, and it's easy to peek over as we bring up new boards like the metro RP2350 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6003). We'll also get the VGA output into our video streaming setup to show off signals we're working on. Updating organization at the Adabench for the New Year
This coming year, we wanted to update our storage and organization: with about 700 original designs, a couple dozen in progress, and thousands of items in the shop, it's hard to keep track of all the components and devboards we need to test various combinations. Historically, we've used double-sided totes (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1149), which are good, but the double-sidedness is a bit annoying, or the little divider boxes for small breakouts (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2938), and snap-top boxes for SMT components (https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=modular+snap). But all these cases were sort of swimming around, and it was getting unwieldy. We're going to try to use the large IKEA ALEX drawers (https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/alex-drawer-unit-on-casters-gray-turquoise-50483449/#content) - we like them cause they're wide and thin - and maybe use something like gridfinity (https://gridfinity.xyz/) to make a flat storage surface so we can quickly find any PCB or part we need. Testing PIO support for RP1 chips on Pi 5 Computers
Ladyada tasked Jepler with exploring the new libPIO for Raspberry Pi 5 computers: this gives us access to the RP1 chip so that we can run custom PIO state machines on the GPIO pins. A common use case is NeoPixels, because of the tight timing requirements of the WS281x LEDs. Here is our first light test that shows it is possible... It's hip to be square (pins) 🔲
We've sold stacking headers (https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=stacking) for a looooong time - longer than the pins' tails, which allow them to stack shields or daughterboards of various kinds. The kind we have are about 0.4mm by 0.6mm, but we got a request to carry 'square' pin versions that will seat better in solderless breadboards and loose sockets. The samples we got are gold flash and 0.62'ish mm square, and they seem pretty good! we'll swap to use these next time we book an order. Pi 5 / RP1 chip support for Neopixels with Python bindings coming soon 🌈🐍
Hot off the PIO-presses, our resident Jepler created a Python binding for the Raspberry Pi 5 that lets us use the RP1 chip (https://www.raspberrypi.com/news/rp1-the-silicon-controlling-raspberry-pi-5-i-o-designed-here-at-raspberry-pi/) on the 5/500 series boards to drive Neopixels using PIO. This is great because we can now use Neopixels (https://www.adafruit.com/category/168) and friends on the latest Pi boards, and we can use any pin because PIO is not limited by underlying peripherals. You do need the latest kernel and firmware, so it is not quite ready for prime-time, but once piolib (https://github.com/raspberrypi/utils/tree/master/piolib) is more readily available, we'll be able to have folks test this out. The Great Search: High Voltage / High Current / Low Vf Diodes
In our WLED design, we want to have two (or maybe three?) DC power inputs, where each can be up to 24V, and supply up to 5A of current into the LED strands. In our typical designs, like the Metro or Feather series, we don't really go above 1A or 2A and 20V. Let's take a look at what is available: we want to have the lowest possible forward drop because, at 5V, we want to have no less than 4.5V going into the LEDs, but we also want to minimize the reverse current which can start to get non-trivial at these capacities. Also, should we go with an 'ideal' diode chip or with a Schottky diode? EYE on NPI: EYE ON NPI - Amphenol's EMC Cable Glands
This week's EYE ON NPI is gland-tascular it's Amphenol's EMC Cable Glands (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/amphenol-ltw/emc-cable-glands) a two-in-one product that provides electrical connectivity for shielding as well as waterproofing for harsh and wet environments. Amphenol has 3 variants available, that will cover from 7 to 17mm cable diameters, and will provide IP68 protection when properly installed. Once makers finish their prototypes on the bench, it's time to turn a bunch of breakouts and breadboards into a finished PCB. That will clean up the loose jumper wires, but it still isn't ready for customer usage. For that we need an enclosure - something we chatted about in the last EYE ON NPI (https://blog.adafruit.com/2024/11/21/eye-on-npi-wurth-elektronik-smd-spacers-eyeonnpi-digikey-digikey-adafruit/). Most enclosures for electronic devices that you'll encounter as a consumer are injection molded or maybe bent-metal, both are durable and fully custom, but have high setup costs which makes them only practical if you are planning on selling over 10,000 pieces. As an industrial designer, you may have to design for max lifetime of 500 pieces. In this case, it may be better to use an off-the-shelf enclosure such as those available from DigiKey (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/category/boxes-enclosures-racks/27). These come in basic rectangular shapes, with mounting holes, and plastic/glass panels. But one problem is that if you want to attach external cabling like USB, Ethernet, CAN, or power, you need to cut perfect slots. Also, those connectors wont be weatherproof. Thus, cable glands! (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/cable-and-cord-grips) Cable glands are like four cable management (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cable_management) solutions in one: they provide strain relief, they allow clean cabling into an enclosure, they are weather or waterproof, and for the EMC series, they also provide ground shielding connectivity to an enclosure. Assembly and is pretty simple (https://learn.adafruit.com/air-quality-sensor-silo-house/assembly). First, drill a hole to match the datasheet template. Insert the first piece with the round gland part facing out. Lightly attach the mounting nut to keep it in place. Thread the cable through and tighten until the inner rubber gasket makes a seal against the cable. If properly installed, you'll get IP68 (https://www.iec.ch/ip-ratings) protection against dust and water. The only thing you have to check for is that the gland specification matches the outer diameter of the cable: too small and you'll crack the gland when tightening it, too large and the gland wont make a proper seal. There's three variants of the EMC Cable Glands (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/amphenol-ltw/emc-cable-glands), and all three are in stock right now for immediate shipment! If you don't need metal shielding, DigiKey stocks a wide variety of other cable glands from Amphenol (https://www.digikey.com/short/7w8vq5jj) for any size cable and enclosure. Order your glands today from DigiKey and they'll ship instantly so that you can start ruggedizing your next enclosure by tomorrow afternoon. See on DigiKey at https://www.digikey.com/short/7ddhh2dt

Trying to design a great WLED board 🌈🦄🦃
While waiting for the turkey to finish brining, we’re designing a board for using WLED – and we want to make like the bestest board in the whole world. Our resident mermaid, firepixie, makes a lot of projects with WLED, and she loves it! So, how can we make something that will be powerful but not too bulky? Here are some things we’re thinking about as the design starts to congeal like cranberry sauce: Power via USB Type C PD with a slide switch that selects between 5, 12, and 20V (24V pixels can usually run fine at 20V) OR via a 2.1mm DC jack. With ideal diodes, it’s good for up to 5A from either. ESP32-Mini module with built-in or optional wFL antenna port. The classic ’32 has broad support, even if we’d prefer the ‘S2 or ‘S3. There are three output signal terminal block sets, with power and ground for each. They’ll be level-shifted to 5V. Built in I2S microphone (we’re still pondering this one). Stemma QT I2C port to connect external sensors/OLEDs/etc.; separate analog/digital input JST port. 1.3″x1.75″ / 33mm x 45mm size with mounting holes. Anything we’re missing, anything that’s extraneous? ============================ Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ ----------------------------------------- #wled #led #diy

Newxie prototype testing success 🦃🥧
We just had a turkey nap and are now back to work. These vertical-mount 1.14" IPS TFT displays have 240 x 135 pixels and are 'stackable' horizontally on a breadboard or perfboard. There are just enough pins to control the TFT and backlight, so if you want to individually control each display, just have them share the SPI and DC pins, then have a unique chip select pin for each. These could make for cute 'flip' display simulations or faux nixie bulbs. The prototypes work fine; we just need to adjust the slot size. The panelized PCBs can be booked, and there is pie.
