EYE on NPI - Bel Fuse 1xN port MagJack and specialty ICMs

This week's EYE ON NPI is as ethereal as it is magical: it's Bel Fuse's 1xN port MagJack and specialty ICMs (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/b/bel-fuse/1xn-port-magjack-and-specialty-icms). These are specially made Ethernet and Ethernet-USB combo jacks that have magnetic transformers inside to make integration with your Ethernet PHY (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet_physical_layer) in order to communicate on the network. MagJacks make designs smaller, and less noisy - they're a great way to simplify your next Ethernet design and get it to market faster! Wireless this, 5G that - what we sometimes need are WIRES! Wired networking is much reliable than wireless, and can go far distances with no loss of signal strength. Particularly as you can also put power over the same wires for nodes that need no other cabling, Ethernet is a reliable networking standard - don't discount it just because of its age! One nice benefit of it is you don't have to do SSID/password setup, it's truly plug and play. Three things are required to add Ethernet. First is a microcontroller or microcomputer that has built in Ethernet Medium Access Control (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medium_access_control), the low level packet forming technology. Some chips have this built in, such as the ESP32 (https://www.digikey.com/short/dz5pv22m) - or you can use a companion chip like the WIZ5xxx series (https://www.digikey.com/en/supplier-centers/wiznet) that can be controlled over SPI. Then, to get onto a network, you'll want the ubiquitous mechanical RJ-45 connector (https://www.digikey.com/short/t28834zr) that will lead to Cat-5 or Cat-6 cable (https://www.digikey.com/short/pnjh3t8d). In between, the signal levels need to be isolated and converted to the +-2.5V differential signal. To do that we need what is colloquially referred to as the 'magnetics': a cluster of transformers and chokes that will make the signal differential, isolate the PHY from the outside world and also reduce the risk of outside spikes and shocks. Both the Wiznet and ESP32 datasheets, for example, have example wiring to help you identify the right configuration. Note that not all chips have the same magnetics impedances / configurations: it depends on the output signal and impedance. Second, this is separate than PoE magnetics (https://www.adafruit.com/product/3847) which are separate from the data transfer. If you don't care about optimizing board size and complexity, you can always use external magnetics with a plain jack. Bel has a full selection of dozens of magnetics for any configuration you may need (https://www.belfuse.com/product-detail/icm-s-discrete-lan-magnetics). For example the Seeed Ethernet shield (https://www.digikey.com/short/70cvntbm) uses this technique because the PCBA is so big they have space to spare. However, when you want to keep your board compact, you can upgrade your design to use one of Bel Fuse's 1xN port MagJacks. (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/b/bel-fuse/1xn-port-magjack-and-specialty-icms) MagJacks provide two big benefits (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/b/bel-fuse/1xn-port-magjack-and-specialty-icms): one they're smaller than separate magnetics/jacks and second, the magnetics get enclosed in the metal shell of the jack which provides some EMI shielding. For example, we used a combo-jack on the Ethernet Featherwing (https://www.digikey.com/short/9w49r80j) to keep the design single-sided. Which is why we were excited to see the Bel Fuse MagJacks pop up on https://www.digikey.com/new - they're a trusted component we've used before. For this week's EYE ON NPI, DigiKey is highlighting a selection of the new Bel Fuse MagJacks, with dozens of options available (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/b/bel-fuse/1xn-port-magjack-and-specialty-icms). There's classic horizontal ones with LEDs (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/bel-fuse-inc/P01-0002-01/25588398). Vertical ones! (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/bel-fuse-inc/P01-1AF2-01/25588382) Countersunken for low clearances (https://www.digikey.com/short/5b9mb454) As well as some nifty combo-units that contain both USB type A and Ethernet. (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/bel-fuse-inc/P01-3CG3-01/25588395) Just make sure that the internal magnetics match your chipset's needs before selecting it for integration. DigiKey is in the process of stocking all the varieties, but if you want to get started, the P01-1AA2-01 (https://www.digikey.com/short/pw02p9m9) is in stock now for immediate delivery. Order today and you can get this part in your hands by tomorrow morning to help optimize your next Ethernet design!

What's N E W ??? these glowing alphanumeric filaments! 🔡💡

Last month we stocked some fun filament shapes, like snowflakes (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6093) or unicorns (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6094) these are easy to use: simply power with 3V like any LED and they glow with a tungsten-eque warmth (but without the 120VAC or burning heat). This week we got some samples of the same COB 'chip on board' filaments but in letters and numbers! Sure we'll have to stock 36 SKUs, but how fun would it be to display custom words? You can drive these in series - 3V total with about 30mA per filament - or parallel - 30mA and 3V * n where n is the number of letters in a row. Espressif programmer test success! 💻✨🔧

While developing boards, there are oftentimes we want to program ESP chips without going through the onboard USB port; this adapter will help us (and others) do that! It has a CP2102N USB-serial chip (https://www.digikey.com/short/bm7n3p5z) with RX/TX signal LEDs and two transistors wired up to the DTR/RTS line for the 'esptool standard' reset procedure technique. The output IO, plus a 3.3V 500mA regulated output, is available on a socket header, so you can plug wires in for quick programming and debugging. You can use this for everything from an ESP8266 up to the ESP32-P4! Here, we are testing it with a HUZZAH ESP8266 breakout board (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2471), one of our first Espressif chipset products. The Great Search: 3M VHB tape for Affixing a Dinosaur to Tile

This morning, we woke up to a mechanical failure in a critical system here at the Adafruit household: our beloved dinosaur tissue holder fell off our bathroom wall and experienced a rapid, unplanned disassembly of one armature. We'll be able to fix the limb, but we want to make sure we can reattach without this happening again! Thus, in today's quest to find an excellent double-sided foam tape—let's check out what DigiKey has in store. Sparkle Motion Mini testers. The Mini came together fast, but classic testers had cascading issues. We used Claude for firmware and got cool samples, including filament letters and enclosures for Sparkle Motion Stick. And our dinosaur tissue holder fell, disassembling an arm! Time to find strong foam tape for reattachment.

EYE on NPI - Texas Instruments DRV10974 BLDC Motor Driver

This week's EYE ON NPI is spinning up to be a good one, it's the Texas Instruments DRV10974 BLDC Motor Driver (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/DRV10974PWPR/9091905) a simple and powerful way to add BLDC motor control to any design, with a wide operating range and all-in-one functionality so you only need a few passives to have a full feedback-ready system for fan control. We haven't used a lot of brushless DC motors - we'll call them BLDC motors - very often here at the 'fruit but that doesn't mean they aren't an essential motor you need to know about. They are the fourth of the most common DC motors people use: steppers / linear actuators, brushed DC, and servo are the others. (Technically, servos are a type of brushed or brushless DC but they're so integrated we separate them). Brushed DC motors are great for anything that has to spin fast, and if you need more torque or lower speeds just gear them down. Brushed DC motors can be driven with a low cost H-bridges (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H-bridge) such as the DRV8833 (https://www.digikey.com/short/zj9p84wr). All you need is two PWM signals to set the direction and speed - you can even add an external encoder if you want to have precise speed calculations (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4416) If you have a motor that's spinning continuously, you're better off going with a brushless motor (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brushless_DC_electric_motor): these still spin around fast like a brushed DC but give up the commutation brushes. Instead, we have to toggle one of three windings in clockwise or counter-clockwise direction to move the stator around. This isn't too bad when the motor is already running, just keep toggling them and you can pretty much guarantee the speed because you're inching the stator around. However, it's harder to start the motor because you have to slowly pulse each coil and you don't know whether the fan is keeping up or falling behind. The easiest way to handle this issue is to have hall effect sensors built into or outside the motor which can detect the permanent magnet on the rotor. But this is expensive, and annoying! So instead we can take advantage of 'back EMF', (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Counter-electromotive_force) the effect on each coil from the internal permanent rotor magnet as it goes around. We can use this as a method to determine the actual speed, but the techniques for doing so are way more complex than a DC or stepper motor. Instead of just applying DC voltage, you have to perform multiple steps to begin rotation from a stop: alignment, open loop acceleration, then closed loop speed control. Which is why you want an easy-to-use chip that takes care of this logic for you, like the TI DRV10974 BLDC Motor Driver (https://www.digikey.com/short/j85mb52n)! This chip abstracts away all that complex management, and provides a direction plus speed PWM pin interface so you can use it from any microcontroller. It even has built in FETs for up to 1A continuous current draw. The DRV10974 will convert the direction / PWM pins into 3 clean sinusoids with 180 degree phases for smooth and quiet motion. It can drive delta or wye motors, with 5 to 18VDC peak to peak voltages, and from 1 to 20 ohm impedance per coil. To allow the DRV10974 to drive a wide range of motors, there are three configuration resistors that let you tweak the performance in hardware. The first resistor will set the current limit from 200mA to 1.6A. The second lets you set the lead angle, a compensation for the back EMF readings (https://www.ti.com/video/6257299020001). The third will let you adjust the acceleration profile, basically letting you optimize the startup time from when we have the sensorless open-loop startup to closed-loop running. Once you've picked the motor you want to use with the DRV, follow TI's tuning guide (https://www.ti.com/lit/ug/slou505/slou505.pdf) to select the resistors for the best performance. There's also some lock-detection built in, since not having an external encoder makes it hard to know when the motor is not running anymore. For engineers that need a brushless motor driver chip that's inexpensive, and easy to integrate, the Texas Instruments DRV10974 BLDC Motor Driver (https://www.digikey.com/short/j85mb52n) is an excellent pick with plenty of stock available at DigiKey. There's also a ready-assembled eval board, the TI DRV10974EVM (https://www.digikey.com/short/0w5qpd04) available if you want to quickly test. And of course, you can pick up a BLDC motor from DigiKey as well (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/motors-ac-dc/178) Order today and your electronic items will fly faster than a rotating fan blade, from Thief River Falls to your office or home so you can start developing with the DRV10974 BLDC Motor Driver (https://www.digikey.com/short/j85mb52n) by tomorrow morning.

The Great Search: I2C all-in-one BLDC Driver

We've been cranking out some nice stepper driver chip breakouts - the A4988 (https://www.digikey.com/short/qzmjwjvv) and the TMC2209 (https://www.digikey.com/short/p4fh9mm4) so far! We've gotten more requests for a 'brushless DC' motor driver - particularly a compact one that is sensorless and has digital control. To be honest, we've never used BLDC motors, but hey, it's never a bad time to check out a new technology. Let's see what DigiKey has for a good 'starter' BLDC: We'd like one with the internal FETs, no external sensors required, and digital speed control and configuration.
