EYE on NPI - Texas Instruments DRV10974 BLDC Motor Driver
This week's EYE ON NPI is spinning up to be a good one, it's the Texas Instruments DRV10974 BLDC Motor Driver (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/DRV10974PWPR/9091905) a simple and powerful way to add BLDC motor control to any design, with a wide operating range and all-in-one functionality so you only need a few passives to have a full feedback-ready system for fan control. We haven't used a lot of brushless DC motors - we'll call them BLDC motors - very often here at the 'fruit but that doesn't mean they aren't an essential motor you need to know about. They are the fourth of the most common DC motors people use: steppers / linear actuators, brushed DC, and servo are the others. (Technically, servos are a type of brushed or brushless DC but they're so integrated we separate them). Brushed DC motors are great for anything that has to spin fast, and if you need more torque or lower speeds just gear them down. Brushed DC motors can be driven with a low cost H-bridges (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H-bridge) such as the DRV8833 (https://www.digikey.com/short/zj9p84wr). All you need is two PWM signals to set the direction and speed - you can even add an external encoder if you want to have precise speed calculations (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4416) If you have a motor that's spinning continuously, you're better off going with a brushless motor (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brushless_DC_electric_motor): these still spin around fast like a brushed DC but give up the commutation brushes. Instead, we have to toggle one of three windings in clockwise or counter-clockwise direction to move the stator around. This isn't too bad when the motor is already running, just keep toggling them and you can pretty much guarantee the speed because you're inching the stator around. However, it's harder to start the motor because you have to slowly pulse each coil and you don't know whether the fan is keeping up or falling behind. The easiest way to handle this issue is to have hall effect sensors built into or outside the motor which can detect the permanent magnet on the rotor. But this is expensive, and annoying! So instead we can take advantage of 'back EMF', (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Counter-electromotive_force) the effect on each coil from the internal permanent rotor magnet as it goes around. We can use this as a method to determine the actual speed, but the techniques for doing so are way more complex than a DC or stepper motor. Instead of just applying DC voltage, you have to perform multiple steps to begin rotation from a stop: alignment, open loop acceleration, then closed loop speed control. Which is why you want an easy-to-use chip that takes care of this logic for you, like the TI DRV10974 BLDC Motor Driver (https://www.digikey.com/short/j85mb52n)! This chip abstracts away all that complex management, and provides a direction plus speed PWM pin interface so you can use it from any microcontroller. It even has built in FETs for up to 1A continuous current draw. The DRV10974 will convert the direction / PWM pins into 3 clean sinusoids with 180 degree phases for smooth and quiet motion. It can drive delta or wye motors, with 5 to 18VDC peak to peak voltages, and from 1 to 20 ohm impedance per coil. To allow the DRV10974 to drive a wide range of motors, there are three configuration resistors that let you tweak the performance in hardware. The first resistor will set the current limit from 200mA to 1.6A. The second lets you set the lead angle, a compensation for the back EMF readings (https://www.ti.com/video/6257299020001). The third will let you adjust the acceleration profile, basically letting you optimize the startup time from when we have the sensorless open-loop startup to closed-loop running. Once you've picked the motor you want to use with the DRV, follow TI's tuning guide (https://www.ti.com/lit/ug/slou505/slou505.pdf) to select the resistors for the best performance. There's also some lock-detection built in, since not having an external encoder makes it hard to know when the motor is not running anymore. For engineers that need a brushless motor driver chip that's inexpensive, and easy to integrate, the Texas Instruments DRV10974 BLDC Motor Driver (https://www.digikey.com/short/j85mb52n) is an excellent pick with plenty of stock available at DigiKey. There's also a ready-assembled eval board, the TI DRV10974EVM (https://www.digikey.com/short/0w5qpd04) available if you want to quickly test. And of course, you can pick up a BLDC motor from DigiKey as well (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/motors-ac-dc/178) Order today and your electronic items will fly faster than a rotating fan blade, from Thief River Falls to your office or home so you can start developing with the DRV10974 BLDC Motor Driver (https://www.digikey.com/short/j85mb52n) by tomorrow morning.

The Great Search: I2C all-in-one BLDC Driver
We've been cranking out some nice stepper driver chip breakouts - the A4988 (https://www.digikey.com/short/qzmjwjvv) and the TMC2209 (https://www.digikey.com/short/p4fh9mm4) so far! We've gotten more requests for a 'brushless DC' motor driver - particularly a compact one that is sensorless and has digital control. To be honest, we've never used BLDC motors, but hey, it's never a bad time to check out a new technology. Let's see what DigiKey has for a good 'starter' BLDC: We'd like one with the internal FETs, no external sensors required, and digital speed control and configuration. Cuttable Neopixel sheet sample test ✂️🌈
We got this kind of nifty sample of a Neopixel 'sheet,' which is uncut LED strips - the whole thing is flexible PCB material with a cuttable square pitch of 1 cm per pixel. it's arranged as a zigzag, so you can immediately use it as one strand of neopixel in a 12 x 24 arrangement. Or you could cut it into funky shapes and connect the data to data input between segments. the panel also requires 12VDC, but that's not too challenging; it could be useful when you need a flexible sheet in an unusual shape and don't want to piece together individual NeoPixel dots! Rooooound display prototype testing 🌀✨
Okay, we've got our 1.3" round TFT prototype ready for testing - and here's a cute GIF of a dial turning back and forth. It's a great way to test the display, backlight, and SD card interface. We're using a QT Py ESP32 since we need quite a bit of oomph to decode GIFs and display them in real-time. With EYESPI, no wiring is required! This is good to go - it's time to book the PCB panel! The Great Search: SMT pick-and-placeable nuts TheGreatSearch adafruit DigiKey @Digikey
This week, we're designing a 1.8" round TFT PCB with a capacitive touch display. It's got a nice overhanging lip, which means we can mount it flush to a front panel. That means we don't want to have mounting holes on the front. Instead, let's use SMT nuts that pick up and place on and give a strong mounting spot while allowing the TFT to sit flat. DigiKey has many variations; let's check them out! The Great Search: Solenoid flyback diodes in SOD-323
For our solenoid driver, we have individual transistors for driving each output, which means that we need to protect them with flyback diodes. The important things we need for a flyback diode are to handle the maximum reverse voltage (30V or so) and be fast—there is a peak current of an amp or so, but it's near-instantaneous, so we're not as worried about continuous current. We'll also need 8, so let's make sure they're not too expensive! Testing Mini Sparkle Motion board & a WLED fix 💡🍴
We got the 'big' Sparkle Motion boards (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6100) out to the PCB fab house and now are turning to the mini version. This one doesn't have USB PD or 24V support, but it is very compact and has many niceties that WLED users will enjoy...like built-in ICS-43434 microphone (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6049), however during testing, we discovered that GPIO 9 and 10 were not available because the ESP32-Mini module (https://www.espressif.com/en/module/esp32-mini-1-en) we're using has slightly different pin availability! More Sparkle Motion testing - 24V Neon Neopixel Tubes ✨🌈
This chonky neopixel tube is a treat with full, smooth color all the way around - but it's also a real pain to drive, given it requires 24V power. Or at least it would be if we didn't have this Sparkle Motion (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6100) board we are testing! With USB PD support, it's easy to plug the board into a USB C laptop power supply that can provide 20V at up to 5A - even though it's under 24V, we've found the LEDs are just as bright. Looks great, we're going to keep testing and get these boards ordered, hopefully before the year's end! Testing Sparkle Motion - Fuse for Views ⚡🎆
We're rounding the corner with testing our Sparkle Motion (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6100) WLED-compatible board. This time, we're doing the fuse test. we got a lot of requests to include a 5A fuse onboard. Of course, we need to verify that it works as expected. With a chonky 12V 25A power supply and my trusty electronic load, we dial up one amp at a time... note that all PTC fuses have a 'hold' of 5A and a higher trip current of ~2x that, so we actually open at 10A. Once it heats up a bit, that trip current can drop a bit, but it will always be over 5A and under 10A. Good test equipment makes this job nice and easy. The board is complete - time to book it up, just in time for the New Year. MOAR Sparkle Motion testing - built-in I2S mic 🎤📊
We're rounding the corner with testing our Sparkle Motion (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6100) WLED-compatible board. We're doing the audio-reactive test with the built-in I2S microphone this time. This digital mic will give great audio quality without needing any extra work. If you want an external mic wired far away, there are GPIOs exposed that you can solder to for another I2S connection - ESP32 lets you use any pins, which is nice! this demo is a graphical equalizer that makes verification easy! All we have left is to test the IR remote and fuse, and we're good to go! Sample testing - single-ended 'nOOds' 🤩✨
aaannnddd they are cuttable-cut-to-size ✂️ The nOOds we've been stocking in the adafruit shop (https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=noods) have been 'power through' type - positive at one end, negative on the other. We've had some requests for nOOds that can be powered from just one end, especially for decorative purposes, and here are some samples we're checking out! These nOOds use an FPC with two solderable/clippable contacts at a single end, and the other end has a melted-off end. The downside is that they are a bit brighter at the head than the tail, but it's not too bad. #noods #singleended #ledstrips Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

Driving HUB75 RGB Matrices on Raspi 5 with PIO 💡😎
Since the latest release of 'piolib' we can do things like drive NeoPixels on any pin on the Raspberry Pi 5 (https://learn.adafruit.com/circuitpython-on-raspberrypi-linux/using-neopixels-on-the-pi-5) which rocks, and means we can tackle the next, more complex, project: driving HUB75 RGB Matrix displays (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5362) these require even MORE timing freakiness: using 10 pins, and 'manual' PWM means we have to constantly blit out the color dithering. Historically this was done with mmap'd memory to the GPIO controller bitbanging, which required a full core and could jitter depending on load. But now we can use the PIO peripheral! We can drive massive display arrays at high speeds and color depths using just about any pins. WLED to xLights exploration ✨🎆
Playing with our new Sparkle Motion board that's coming soon (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6100) we wanted to try driving a large display of LEDs and discovered that once you want to do custom display graphics, WLED is not super great. Instead, you can use the open source and free xLights software (https://xlights.org/) which is completely amazing and has a learning curve like a cliff for the first 30 minutes. BUT once you get your controller and layout, it's unbelievably powerful and actually kinda easy to get going with simple display work. It also has a very satisfying preview mode. #wled #led #neopixel Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

BIG BIG rainbows on "Sparkle motion" WLED driver board
We got our WLED-friend PCBs (https://blog.adafruit.com/2024/12/02/leftovers-layout-wled-board-revision-a-completed/) and are testing it with various LED grids. First, we tried out a 16x16 NeoPixel grid that runs on 5V. Since that worked well, we're now onto a much bigger 60 x 60 grid - that's 3,600 LEDs! These are some NeoPixel pebble (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6024) netting samples we're also testing at the same time; each one has 20 x 60 pixels and uses 12V power, so it's a good test of the DC pass-through for higher voltages. Since WLED has a limit of 2000 pixels per output, this demo uses the three output ports that are then 'merged' together in memory to make a single large grid. We have more to test soon: the onboard IR receiver, USB PD, I2S microphone, extra I/O pins, and I2C, so watch for those videos as they come together. The first test for our WLED board codename "Sparkle Motion" 🌈💖💡 ... 🐇⏳🌌
We got our WLED-friend PCBs today, and we only made one mistake: the wrong resistor on the 3.3V feedback line. Now that it's fixed, the board seems to work great with the latest version of WLED (https://kno.wled.ge/basics/tutorials/)! we are checking all 4 signal outputs with this handy 256-LED grid that sits on our desk. Next, we will test the onboard IR receiver, USB PD, I2S microphone, extra I/O pins, and I2C. We'll also do an Arduino IDE board definition in case folks want to use it as a generic ESP32-to-LED-driver board. We're calling the board "Sparkle Motion" for now, but if you have other naming ideas, let us know - if we pick your name, you get a free board (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6100).
