L076: Pakistan's Tekken Legend Highlights 主題摘要Pakistani Tekken players dominate globally despite economic hardships and infrastructure limitations.Arslan Siddique won six EVO championships, becoming Pakistan's gaming superstar.Visa barriers limit Pakistani gamers' international tournament participation opportunities. In the bustling streets of Lahore, Pakistan, an unlikely gaming revolution has emerged from grimy arcade halls powered by sputtering generators. Three of the world's top ten Tekken players hail from Pakistan, a nation better known for political turmoil than esports excellence. This remarkable achievement becomes even more extraordinary considering that a PlayStation costs more than most Pakistani workers earn monthly, and reliable electricity remains a luxury rather than a guaranteed necessity. The contrast between Pakistan's economic constraints and its gaming prowess highlights the determination of its young players. Arslan Siddique aka "Ash" epitomizes this extraordinary journey from local arcade hero to international champion. The quietly assured 30-year-old practices eight hours daily in a modest Lahore studio decorated with gleaming trophies and anime figurines. Starting at age seven in neighborhood arcades, Ash has claimed six consecutive EVO fighting game championships, earning $12,000 in his latest Las Vegas victory. His remarkable success story reflects Pakistan's unique arcade culture, where expensive home consoles drove passionate gamers toward affordable public gaming venues. The legendary Maniax arcade, with its disheveled chairs and rainwater seepage, continues nurturing new talent despite harsh conditions. However, Pakistan's gaming prodigies face substantial obstacles beyond the virtual battlefield. Stringent visa restrictions severely limit international travel opportunities, as Pakistan holds one of the world's weakest passports. After spectacularly defeating South Korea's national team in Seoul, Ash publicly criticized the bureaucratic barriers preventing Pakistani players from showcasing their exceptional talents globally. "No matter how talented we are, if you cannot go outside and show our talent, it's not worth it," he explained during media interviews. The lack of government infrastructure support compounds these challenges, though officials are now developing Pakistan's first esports policy. Despite these persistent challenges, Pakistan's Tekken community continues inspiring a new generation of determined gamers. The government promises dedicated gaming arenas and infrastructure support through upcoming policy initiatives. Female player Laiba Adnan represents growing diversity within the traditionally male-dominated scene, though women still face cultural barriers accessing public arcades. Meanwhile, even Tekken's director admits being puzzled by Pakistan's sudden dominance, confessing he has "no idea" how the game became so popular there. As Ash confidently declares while surrounded by his impressive championship trophies, "The future is bright" for Pakistan's gaming revolution. Epitomizes [verb, represents perfectly]: Arslan Siddique epitomizes this extraordinary journey from local arcade hero to international champion.Prodigies [noun, exceptionally talented people]: However, Pakistan's gaming prodigies face substantial obstacles beyond the virtual battlefield.Obstacles [noun, barri

All about Australia
Topic: Australia's bushfires: 2019 like nothing seen before As the bushfires in Australia this year extend across five million hectares, an area larger than many countries, stories of destruction have become depressingly familiar. So far 24 people and 460 million animals have been killed. In New South Wales (NSW), the worst-affected state, up to 1,365 homes have been destroyed. It is too early for a thorough examination of the impact on wildlife, including the many threatened species in the fires' path. Does this qualify as unprecedented? Plenty of experts say yes, but not all politicians and newspaper columnists are convinced. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison acknowledged the fires were severe, but also adopted a familiar line: Australia has always had bushfires. That's true. But a key question is whether it has always had bushfires like this. David Bowman, director of The Fire Centre at the University of Tasmania, says the most striking thing about this fire season is the continent-scale nature of the threat. "The geographic range, and the fact it is occurring all at once, is what makes it unprecedented," Bowman says. "There has never been a situation where there has been a fire from southern Queensland, right through NSW, into Gippsland, in the Adelaide Hills, near Perth and on the east coast of Tasmania." He says one of the less explored issues, though it has begun to receive some attention in recent days, is the economic impact of having prolonged fires that affect so many Australians. "You can't properly run an economy when you get a third to a half of the population affected by smoke, and the media completely focused on fires," he says. There are also fears critically endangered Wollemi pines have burned in the fires tearing through the Blue Mountains. They were thought extinct until discovered by bushwalkers in 1994. Their whereabouts had been kept secret from the public to keep them safe. Authorities say the smoke that has smothered Sydney, Canberra and other centers and towns in recent weeks has produced pollution up to 11 times greater than the hazardous level for human health. In Sydney, the air pollution has been hazardous for at least 30 days. The explanation should be familiar by now: greenhouse gas emissions do not cause bushfires, but they play a demonstrated role in increasing average and particularly extreme temperatures and contribute to the extraordinarily dry conditions afflicting eastern Australia. Scientists cite the near absolute lack of moisture in the landscape as a key reason the fires have been so severe. Multiple studies, here and overseas, have found the climate crisis is lengthening the fire season. Source article: http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2020/01/07/2003728808 Next Article Topic: 7.5 billion-year-old meteorite contains oldest material ever found on Earth Scientists analyzing a meteorite that fell down onto an Australian village in 1969 have discovered that the rock contained many particles of stardust that existed before our solar system was formed, dating them to around 7.5 billion years ago, making them the oldest material ever found on the Earth. The study findings have been published in the American scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The meteorite that was analyzed fell to the Earth in the area around the village of Murchison in Victoria, Australia on Sept. 28, 1969. A team of scientists from the US and Switzerland placed ground particles of the meteorite in acid to remove all the material, leaving only the stardust. They then measured the length of time that this stardust would have been exposed to cosmic rays, in order to determine its age. According to Philipp Heck, the primary author of the study, they determined that 90 percent of the stardust in the meteorite was dated to between 4.6 billion and 5.5 billion years ago, with the remaining 10 percent being over 5.5 billion years old, of which the ol

Before SpongeBob, he was a stand-up comedian and worked on various animated shows including "Rocko's Modern Life." The voice of SpongeBob was inspired by the voice he used for a minor character in "Rocko's Modern Life." Kenny developed SpongeBob's iconic laugh after creator Stephen Hillenburg requested a laugh that sounded like "a dolphin mixed with a seagull." He records episodes in group sessions with his fellow voice actors to maintain the natural chemistry between characters. Beyond SpongeBob, Kenny has voiced over 1000 characters including the Ice King in "Adventure Time" and the Mayor in "Powerpuff Girls." Despite his success, he still attends voice acting workshops and constantly works on expanding his vocal range. Kenny often visits children's hospitals in character as SpongeBob, bringing joy to sick children. He's won multiple Annie Awards and Emmys for his voice work. 2. Her breakthrough came when she replaced Mary Kay Bergman as the voice of Daphne in the Scooby-Doo franchise after Bergman's passing. DeLisle-Griffin is known for her incredible vocal range, able to voice both young boys and elderly women convincingly. She prepares for roles by creating detailed backstories for her characters, even if they're not in the script. In addition to voice acting, she's a trained singer and has released several folk music albums. She regularly teaches voice acting workshops, emphasizing the importance of authenticity in performance. What many don't know is that she started by doing impression shows at retirement homes, which helped her develop her wide range of voices. 3. L072: Powell Resists Trump Pressure Despite Rate Cut Highlights 主題摘要The Federal Reserve cut interest rates for the first time in nine months, responding to mounting concerns about America's weakening labor market conditions.Trump-appointed governors push for aggressive rate cuts while Chairman Powell advocates a measured approach to prevent unfinished inflation control efforts.Political tensions intensify as President Trump attempts to reshape Fed leadership through personnel changes and public pressure campaigns. The Federal Reserve delivered its first interest rate cut since December, lowering the benchmark rate by a quarter point to approximately 4.1% to support America's struggling job market. The decision comes amid rising unemployment and weakening hiring trends, with building permits falling for five consecutive months to their lowest level since April 2020. Fed officials acknowledged growing downside risks to employment while noting that inflation remains above their 2% target, creating a delicate balancing act for monetary policy. Sharp divisions have emerged within the Fed's leadership over the appropriate pace of future rate cuts. Trump-appointed governors Stephen Miran and Michelle Bowman advocate for more aggressive reductions, with Miran becoming the lone dissenter from Wednesday's decision and favoring a larger half-point cut. They argue the Fed risks falling behind the curve in addressing deteriorating labor conditions. However, other officials express caution about moving too quickly, particularly Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee, who emphasized the need for careful consideration given inflation's persistent elevation above target levels for over four years. Chairman Jerome Powell maintained his measured stance despite mounting political pressure from President Trump, who has repeatedly attacked the Fed chair personally, calling him a "numbskull" and questioning his mental capacity. Powell emphasized that cutting rates "too aggressively" could leave the inflation job unfinished and necessitate painful policy reversals later. He defended the Fed's independence during his press conference, stating officials never consider political factors in their decisions and dismissing political attacks as "cheap shots." Trump's interference campaign has included attempting to fire Powell and trying to strip the Fed board of his authority. Markets responded with initial optimism before turning volatile as investors weighed the Fed's cautious approach against escalating political uncertainties. Stock indices initially rallied with the Dow gaining 260 points, but later retreated as Powell's hawkish comments tempered expectations for aggressive future cuts. The dollar strengthened while Treasury yields fluctuated as traders processed the central bank's measured policy trajectory. Analysts increasingly worry that continued political interference could fundamentally undermine market confidence in the Fed's ability to maintain its century-old tradition of independence and effectiveness. Struggling [adjective, having difficulty]: The Federal Reserve lowered the benchmark rate by a quarter point to support America's struggling job market.Dissenter [noun, one who disagrees with prevailing opinion]: Miran becoming the lone dissenter from Wednesday's decision and favoring a larger half-point cut.Defended [verb, protected or justified]: He defended the Fed's independence during his press conference, stating officials never consider political factors in their decisions.Trajectory [noun, the path followed by a process]: Treasury yields fluctuated

Robin Williams (Voice of Genie in "Aladdin") Quote: "No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world." Source: From his 1996 commencement speech at Boston University 1. Robin Williams revolutionized voice acting in animation with his role as Genie in Disney's "Aladdin" (1992). Before his involvement, voice actors typically stuck strictly to the script, but Williams improvised over 16 hours of material for Genie, with only a fraction making it into the final film. His work changed how animation studios approached voice acting, leading to more improvisational freedom. Williams initially took the role for $75,000 (far below his usual fee) but had conditions: his voice couldn't be used for merchandise and Genie couldn't take up more than 25% of advertising. When Disney broke these conditions, Williams refused to return for the direct-to-video sequel. He later reconciled with Disney after receiving an apology and a Pablo Picasso painting. The role earned him a Special Golden Globe Award. Despite his massive success, Williams continued to visit children's hospitals in character as Genie, showing his dedication to bringing joy to others. His work demonstrated how voice acting could be just as dynamic and creative as live-action performance. 2. Jim Cummings (Voice of Winnie the Pooh and Tigger) Quote: "Never give up. Never stop believing in yourself and your abilities. You never know who might be looking up to you." Source: Interview with Animation World Network, Jim Cummings has voiced over 400 characters across his career, including Disney's Winnie the Pooh and Tigger since 1988. He began his career doing radio commercials and working at Disneyland. What many don't know is that he would use his voice talents to call sick children in hospitals as their favorite characters, particularly during the holidays. Cummings is known for his incredible versatility – he can seamlessly switch between characters mid-conversation. He took over both Pooh and Tigger from the legendary Sterling Holloway and Paul Winchell, respectively, becoming the first person to voice both characters regularly. His dedication to maintaining the legacy of these beloved characters while adding his own touch has earned him multiple Annie Awards. Despite his success, Cummings still attends voice acting workshops to continue improving his craft. He's known in the industry for helping new voice actors, often providing mentorship and encouragement to those starting their careers. 3. June Foray (Voice of Rocky from "Rocky and Bullwinkle") Quote: "If you love what you do, you never work a day in your life - that's why I'm still working." Source: From her 2009 Television Academy Foundation Interview 3. Known as the "First Lady of Voice Acting," JuneForay's career spanned nearly 80 years. Born in 1917, she began voice acting on radio at age 12. Beyond Rocky the Flying Squirrel, she voiced Natasha Fatale, Nell Fenwick, and thousands of other characters. Foray was instrumental in creating the Annie Awards and pushing for animation to be recognized by the Academy Awards. She fought for voice actors to receive proper credit and compensation when most were uncredited. Despite working well into her 90s, she continued to take voice acting classes, believing that one should never stop learning. In 1995, ASIFA-Hollywood created the June Foray Award to recognize individuals who made significant contributions to animatio

L068: Olympic Champion Lee Yang Becomes Taiwan's First Sports Minister Highlights 主題摘要Olympic badminton champion Lee Yang became Taiwan's youngest Cabinet minister at 30 years old.Lee jogged around the ministry building on his first day in office, covering five thousand meters in thirty minutes. The Ministry of Sports was established on National Sports Day, elevating sports from a department to a standalone government priority. Lee Yang's appointment as Taiwan's inaugural Sports Minister represents a watershed moment in the nation's athletic development. The 30-year-old badminton legend, who captured Olympic gold medals in both Tokyo 2021 and Paris 2024 alongside partner Wang Chi-lin, officially assumed leadership of the newly established Ministry of Sports on September 9, 2025. His historic swearing-in ceremony coincided with National Sports Day, creating symbolic resonance that underscores President Lai Ching-te's commitment to elevating sports within Taiwan's national priorities. True to his athletic roots, Lee demonstrated remarkable leadership style from day one. Rather than confining himself to administrative duties, he laced up his running shoes and jogged 5,000 meters around the ministry building in thirty minutes. This personal commitment accompanied his signature on the ministry's first policy initiative, which encourages citizens to exercise for at least thirty minutes daily. His Facebook post declaring "National fitness starts with me" exemplifies his hands-on approach to governance, showing that policy makers should lead by example. Lee's transition from elite athlete to government minister reflects Taiwan's evolving approach to sports administration. After retiring from professional badminton in December 2024, he briefly served as an associate professor at National Taiwan Sport University before accepting this unprecedented ministerial role. His six-point policy framework emphasizes "sports for all," aiming to broaden participation beyond competitive athletics to include seniors, people with disabilities, and women across all demographics. The framework also prioritizes improving benefits and working conditions for professional athletes based on his firsthand experience. The establishment of Taiwan's Ministry of Sports elevates athletic development from a subordinate department within the Ministry of Education to a standalone governmental priority. Lee pledges to balance supporting elite athletes with fostering grassroots participation, ensuring that sports accessibility extends throughout society while maintaining Taiwan's competitive edge in international competitions. His unique perspective as both former competitor and current administrator positions him to bridge the gap between athletic excellence and public health initiatives. Fellow Olympians, including boxer Lin Yu-ting, attended his inauguration ceremony, demonstrating widespread support within Taiwan's athletic community. Watershed [noun, a crucial turning point]: Lee Yang's appointment represents a watershed moment.Leadership [noun, the act of leading]: Lee officially assumed leadership of the newly established Ministry of Sports.Initiative [noun, a new plan or action]: He signed the ministry's first policy initiative encouraging daily exercise.Transition [noun, a change from one state to another]: Lee's transition from elite athlete to government minister reflects Taiwan's evolving approach to sports administration.Pledges [verb, promises to do something]: Lee pledges to balance supporting elite athletes with fostering grassroots participation. L064: Nepal's Gen Z Topples Government Highlights 主題摘要Nepal's Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned after deadly protests killed 22 people, marking a dramatic shift in the country's political landscape.Youth-led demonstrations began over social media bans but evolved into a broader anti-corruption movement challenging Nepal's political establishment.Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was appointed as Nepal's first female prime minister to address the crisis and restore stability. Nepal's political landscape underwent seismic changes this week as youth-led protests forced the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and culminated in the appointment of the country's first female leader. The unprecedented demonstrations, which began as opposition to social media restrictions, evolved into a powerful anti-corruption movement that has fundamentally transformed Nepal's governance structure and challenged decades of traditional political dominance. The crisis began when the government banned 26 social media platforms, including WhatsApp and Facebook, citing registration requirements with Nepal's communication ministry. However, this decision ignited widespread fury among Nepal's digitally-connected youth, who viewed the ban as a deliberate attempt to suppress their voices and curtail ongoing anti-corruption campaigns. The protests quickly escalated beyond the social media issue, with demonstrators demanding systemic reforms, accountability from corrupt officials, and an end to the widespread nepotism symbolized by the viral #NepoKids hashtag that contrasted politicians' lavish lifestyles with ordinary citizens' struggles. Violence erupted as thousands of Gen Z protesters clashed with police in Kathmandu and other major cities across Nepal. Security forces responded with tear gas, water cannons, and live ammunition as determined demonstrators scaled parliament walls, breached government building perimeters, and set fire to key political institutions. The confrontations resulted in at least 51 deaths and over 1,300 injuries, creating a humanitarian crisis that shocked the nation. Additionally, more than 12,500 prisoners escaped from multiple jails during the chaos, with many attempting to flee to neighboring India, creating widespread security concerns that stretched law enforcement resources thin. In response to the escalating crisis, President Ramchandra Poudel appointed former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as interim prime minister, making her Nepal's first female head of government in the country's modern history. The 73-year-old legal veteran, renowned for her unwavering anti-corruption stance and judicial integrity, represents a carefully chosen compromise candidate acceptable to both the protesting Gen Z groups and the broader political establishment. Her appointment signals a potential turning point in Nepal's tumultuous political journey, though the country faces continued uncertainty as it navigates this unprecedented transition while addressing deep-rooted issues of systemic corruption, youth unemployment, and the fundamental disconnect between political elites and ordinary citizens that sparked this remarkable uprising. Culminated [verb, reached the highest point or final result]: The unprecedented demonstrations culminated in the appointment of the country's first female leader.Transformed [verb, changed completely or dramatically]: The unprecedented demonstrations evolved into a powerful anti-corruption movement that has fundamentally transformed Nepal's governance

Everyone knows that these high-calorie foods can lead to chronic illnesses such as heart disease and high blood pressure, but, according to a report published by Medical Xpress, a study led by the University of Queensland in Australia has found that eating too much junk food can also have an impact on teenagers’ sleep quality. According to the research results, teenagers who drink more than three soft drinks per day were 55 percent more likely to report sleep disturbance than those who only drink one cup per day. Males who ate fast foods on more than four days per week were 55 percent more likely to report sleep disturbance than those who ate them only once a week, while females were 49 percent more likely to do so. This global study examined unhealthy diets and stress-related sleep disturbance in high school students from 64 countries. The study found that 7.5 percent of adolescents reported having stress-related sleep disturbance, which was more common among females than males and increased with more frequent consumption of carbonated soft drinks, as did the occurrence of sleep problems. Because carbonated drinks often contain caffeine and large amounts of sugar, while fast foods are high in energy but poor in nutrients, long-term consumption can cause nutritional imbalances. These data were collected from global health surveys conducted by the WHO between 2009 and 2016, which included about 170,000 students aged 12 to 15 years from 64 low, middle and high-income countries in Southeast Asia, Africa, South America and the eastern Mediterranean. The research team said that frequent intake of soft drinks and eating of fast foods is closely associated with sleep problems in teenagers, and that this phenomenon is particularly clear in high-income countries. The research team said that these findings are worrying because poor-quality sleep has an adverse impact on adolescent health and cognitive development. They suggested that policies should be formulated that target these unhealthy behaviors. Source article: https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2021/01/05/2003749938 Next Article Topic: Cognitive decline linked to ultraprocessed food, study finds Too many daily calories from highly processed foods like lunch meats, frozen dinners, and packaged cookies may speed up cognitive decline, a new study suggests. In the study, researchers examined the diets and cognitive function test results of more than 8,000 adults in Brazil. At the start of the study, participants consumed an average of about 2,850 calories a day. About 28 percent of their daily calories came from highly processed foods. After about nine years of follow-up, cognitive test scores for memory and executive function declined the most for participants who ate the most highly processed foods. Ultraprocessed foods are defined as “industrial formulations of food substances (oils, fats, sugars, starch, and protein isolates) that contain little or no whole foods and typically include flavorings, colorings, emulsifiers, and other cosmetic additives,” according to the study. Next Article Topic: Taiwan gourmets shocked at Pizza Hut’s newest cilantro, century egg-flavored delight Pizza Hut is about to release a new “cilantro, century egg pig’s blood cake pizza” (香菜皮蛋豬血糕比薩) whose chaotic combination of fl

L060: SpaceX星艦重獲成功 SpaceX Starship Achieves Breakthrough Success Highlights 主題摘要SpaceX's Starship rocket completed successful test flights after multiple explosive failures throughout the year. The world's largest rocket endured intense reentry heat and deployed dummy satellites during critical tests.NASA depends on Starship for its 2027 Artemis Moon mission, though timeline remains uncertain. SpaceX faced mounting pressure throughout 2025 as its revolutionary Starship rocket suffered a devastating series of explosive failures. The world's most powerful launch vehicle, standing 403 feet tall, had experienced three catastrophic explosions during test flights, with debris raining down over the Caribbean and another rocket exploding on its test stand in June. Critics questioned whether Elon Musk's ambitious vision of reaching Mars and supporting NASA's lunar program was achievable, especially after years of development costs exceeding billions of dollars and growing skepticism from aerospace industry observers. The breakthrough finally came during a nail-biting 60-minute test flight from Texas, when Starship successfully demonstrated its remarkable capabilities. Despite experiencing engine explosions and flaps catching fire during descent, the massive rocket completed its mission profile, reaching nearly 200 kilometers above Earth before executing a controlled splashdown in the Indian Ocean. The spacecraft's innovative "Pez"-like satellite deployment system functioned flawlessly, dispensing mock Starlink satellites for the first time—a crucial milestone that previous tests had failed to achieve, providing essential validation for the rocket's commercial viability. Technical achievements aside, Starship's success represents crucial validation of SpaceX's controversial "fail fast, learn fast" philosophy, distinguishing it from competitors like Blue Origin who favor extensive ground testing. The company gathered comprehensive data from takeoff through landing, essential information for developing the fully reusable transport system capable of carrying humans to both the Moon and Mars. However, significant engineering challenges remain, including perfecting orbital refueling techniques with super-cooled propellants and developing heat shields that can withstand repeated atmospheric reentries without requiring months of costly refurbishment between missions. The stakes couldn't be higher for both SpaceX and NASA's ambitious timeline. With the Artemis program targeting human Moon landings by 2027, and Musk promising uncrewed Mars missions within the next year, Starship must prove its operational reliability quickly. The United States finds itself in an intense space race against China, with many experts believing that despite this recent progress, achieving the 2027 lunar deadline remains extremely unlikely. Nevertheless, Tuesday's triumphant success has reinvigorated confidence in the program and demonstrated that SpaceX's boldest engineering dreams may indeed transform from ambitious speculation into technological reality. Revolutionary [adjective, involving completely new methods or ideas]: SpaceX faced mounting pressure as its revolutionary Starship rocket suffered a devastating series of explosive failures.Explosive [adjective, involving or causing a sudden burst]: The world's most powerful launch vehicle had experienced three catastrophic explosive failures during test flights.Breakthrough [noun, important discovery or development]: The breakthrough finally came during a

All about Taiwan
Original icon font promotes beauty of Taiwan Holoko and Rob, a Japanese designer and a British programmer, recently joined hands to design a hundred Taiwan-themed icon fonts in hopes of introducing local tourism attractions and attracting more tourists to Taiwan. But, what’s an icon font? Icon fonts are fonts that contain symbols and glyphs instead of letters and numbers. Internet users can style them with CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) to create original designs in a variety of colors and shapes. The aforesaid icon font is organized into four types, including sights, products, traffic and more. In addition to famous Taiwan attractions and offshore islands, various cultural features such as pearl milk tea, Taiwan Railways Administration, and YouBike have been converted into cute mini icons. In 2019, China imposed a travel ban that froze individual tourists’ permits to Taiwan, which caused a significant impact on Taiwan’s tourism. Against this backdrop, Holoko and Rob launched this project with the hopes of bringing more people from around the world to discover the beauty of Taiwan, according to the designers’ official website. In addition, they stressed how “we support Taiwan not only because Taiwan is attractive but also is our friends.” Among other highlights, they remarked that Taiwan-Japan ties have been blooming ties in recent years which can be seen in the pearl milk tea craze in Japan, an increase of Japanese tourists to Taiwan and donations to the Japan earthquake in 2011. 「WE STAND BY TAIWAN」是計畫口號,呼應整體概念。 “We Stand By Taiwan” the slogan of the project, reflects such design concepts. The two foreign creators launched this project with the aim of supporting freedom in Taiwan. So far, the first version has already been released and they will continue to improve their original font to let more people know about Taiwan. Later that day, President Tsai Ing-wen retweeted Streisand’s post, saying that it is encouraging to have one of the world’s most distinctive voices speak up in support of Taiwan’s proactive approach against the outbreak. “We are more than willing to share our experiences with friends around the world as well,” the president wrote, followed by hashtag #TaiwanCanHelp — a slogan signifying Taiwan’s willingness to contribute to the world during the pandemic. Fans have suggested that Streisand stage a concert in Taiwan after the crisis, so she can see this beautiful land in person. Source article: https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2020/04/17/2003734741 Taiwan’s culinary innovations cause a stir in the world of pizza Forget your pepperoni or other pizza toppings: Pizza Hut Taiwan has teamed up with Menya Musashi, a popular Japanese ramen restaurant chain, to serve up the world’s first ramen pizza, and it has attracted global interest after a CNN report about the new mashup was published on the front-page of its Japanese version. The new pizza has the toppings of a Japanese-style barbecue pork ramen — complete with thick noodles, barbecue pork slices, fresh chilies and white sesame, as well as a half-boiled egg sitting in the middle. L055: Wildfires Devastate Multiple European Nations as Heat Fuels Spreading Blazes Highlights Devastating wildfires swept across Spain, Portugal, Turkey and Greece, killing victims and forcing thousands to evacuate from homes and resorts.Nearly 1,000 soldiers joined firefighters battling blazes while emergency services reported 77 hospitalizations from smoke exposure in Turkey alone.European wildfire destruction has increased 87% above historical averages, with over 400,000 hectares already burned this year. Deadly wildfires raged across southern Europe this week as extreme heat created perfect conditions for devastating blazes. Spain witnessed its most tragic incident when flames claimed a victim who suffered burns across 98% of his body near Madrid, where firefighters had largely contained the blaze by Tuesday morning. Firefighters and nearly 1,000 soldiers battled multiple fires in regions including Castile and Leon, Castile-La Mancha, Andalusia, and Galicia, while thousands of tourists fled beach resorts at Spain's southern tip. Regional authorities later confirmed some evacuated beachgoers could return to their hotels. Portugal mobilized over 700 firefighters to combat a major blaze in Trancoso municipality, located approximately 350 kilometers northeast of Lisbon, while smaller fires burned throughout northern territories. The Portuguese emergency response demonstrated the massive scale of resources needed to tackle such widespread destruction across the country's forested regions. French authorities placed most southern regions under the highest heat warning, with some municipalities offering free access to public swimming pools as relief measures for residents struggling with the intense temperatures. Turkey experienced perhaps the most dramatic evacuations when wildfires swept through Canakkale province, forcing 2,000 residents to flee by both land and sea routes. The blaze originated on agricultural land but rapidly spread to forested areas before reaching residential zones, fanned by strong winds that complicated firefighting efforts. Emergency services reported 77 hospitalizations due to smoke exposure, highlighting the serious health dangers beyond direct fire damage. Agriculture Minister Ibrahim Yumakli confirmed that while the major Canakkale fire was largely contained, firefighters continued battling active blazes in western provinces including Manisa and Izmir. Greece faced multiple emergency situations with seven major wildfires threatening cities and tourist destinations. The most serious blaze approached Patras, the country's third-largest city, where firefighters scrambled resources to protect industrial areas and residential neighborhoods. High winds severely hindered firefighting efforts on popular tourist islands Zakynthos and Kefalonia, where authorities remained on standby to evacuate resort complexes if conditions deteriorated further. Greek civil protection services issued over 20 mobile phone alerts with evacuation orders. European wildfire destruction has escalated 87% above historical averages this year, with over 400,000 hectares already consumed according to EU data published. Mobilized [verb, organized and deployed for action]: Portugal mobilized over 700 firefighters to combat a major blaze in Trancoso municipality.Scrambled [verb, moved quickly and urgently]: The most serious blaze approached Patras where firefighters scrambled resources to protect industrial areas.Consumed [verb, completely destroyed by fire]: European wildfire destruction has escalated with over 400,000 hectare

My day is fine」,前面先重複問題就能爭取思考時間。 John 老師強調:「Deliberate practice on certain topics is very important。」 Reading Out Loud 的隱藏價值 許多學習者認為 reading out loud 沒有用,但 John 老師澄清:「Reading out loud 對你的 brain processing 是非常非常有用的。」

US Customs ruled Swiss gold bars would face thirty-nine percent tariffs, surprising Wall Street traders completely.Gold prices surged to record highs before retreating when White House called reports misinformation.Trump clarified on Truth Social that gold would not face tariffs, ending market confusion. The global gold market experienced unprecedented turmoil when US Customs issued a surprising July thirty-first ruling targeting Swiss gold bars. The agency declared that one kilogram and hundred-ounce imports would face reciprocal tariffs, completely blindsiding Wall Street traders who expected precious metals to remain exempt from duties. This ruling specifically targeted Switzerland, which faces Trump's highest tariff rate of thirty-nine percent among trading partners. Gold bullion serves as crucial backing for financial contracts traded on New York's Comex exchange, making this unexpected ruling particularly significant for American precious metals markets. Market reaction was immediate as gold futures surged more than one percent Thursday, reaching record highs above thirty-five hundred dollars per troy ounce. The precious metal had gained thirty-one percent this year as investors sought safe havens amid trade uncertainty. However, the potential tariff created serious supply chain concerns since Switzerland houses much of the world's gold refining capacity. A thirty-nine percent tariff would significantly increase costs for importing bullion into America. Traders worried about navigating complex new import duties on such a fundamental commodity, fearing operational disruptions. Industry experts quickly recognized the potentially devastating impact on global precious metals markets. UBS strategists warned that tariffs would create significant costs for traders who rely on importing gold to settle financial contracts. The Swiss Precious Metals Association expressed concern about implications for the longstanding gold trade partnership between Switzerland and America. Friday afternoon, a White House official attempted damage control by calling the tariff reports "misinformation" and promising an executive order to clarify the situation. Manufacturers of a wide range of products have made it increasingly difficult over the years to repair things, for instance by limiting availability of parts or by putting prohibitions on who gets to tinker with them. It affects not only game consoles or farm equipment, but cellphones, military gear, refrigerators, automobiles and even hospital ventilators, the lifesaving devices that have proved crucial this year in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, a movement known as “right to repair” is starting to make progress in pushing for laws that prohibit restrictions like these. In August, Democrats introduced a bill in Congress to block manufacturers’ limits on medical devices, spurred by the pandemic. In Europe, the European Commission announced plans in March for new right-to-repair rules that would cover phones, tablets and laptops by 2021. And in more than 20 statehouses nationwide, right-to-repair legislation has been introduced in recent years by both Republicans and Democrats. Over the summer, the House advanced a funding bill that includes a requirement that the Federal Trade Commission complete a report on anti-competitive practices in the repair market and present its findings to Congress and the public. The goal of right-to-repair rules, advocates say, is to require companies to make their parts, tools and information available to consumers and repair shops in order to keep devices from ending up in the scrap heap. They argue that the rules restrict people’s use of devices that they own and encourage a throwaway culture by making repairs too difficult. They also argue that it’s part of a culture of planned obsolescence — the idea that products are designed to be short-lived in order to encourage people to buy more stuff. That contributes to wasted natural resources and energy use at a time when climate change requires movement in the opposite direction to rein in planet-warming emissions. Manufacturing a new device or appliance is still largely reliant on polluting sources of energy — electricity generated from burning fossil fuels, for instance — and constitutes the largest environmental impact for most products. Source article: https://udn.com/news/story/6904/5015841 Next Article Topic: Help for Curing The Phone Addiction Like pretty much everyone, Susan Butler stares at her smartphone too much. Unprecedented Chip Deal Between US and China Highlights Tech giants Nvidia and AMD agreed to pay US government 15% of Chinese chip revenues. The deal allows AI chip sales to China despite previous national security bans.Critics say this creates dangerous precedent of monetizing national security decisions. The United States recently announced an extraordinary trade arrangement involving two major technology companies. Nvidia and AMD, leading semiconductor manufacturers, have agreed to pay the American government fifteen percent of their revenues from selling advanced chips to China. This unprecedented deal emerged after intensive lobbying efforts, particularly from Nvidia's chief executive Jensen Huang, who reportedly met with President Trump at the White House. The agreement represents a dramatic shift from earlier policies that completely banned these chip exports to China due to national security concerns. The deal centers around specialized chips designed for the Chinese market. Nvidia's H20 chip and AMD's MI308 chip are modified versions of their flagship products, created to comply with export restrictions while accessing China's massive artificial intelligence market. Industry analysts estimate China's AI investment will reach approximately one hundred billion dollars this year, representing nearly fifty percent growth compared to last year. This enormous market potential explains why both companies accepted the unusual revenue-sharing requirement imposed by the US government to resume their Chinese operations. The announcement triggered widespread criticism from security experts, former government advisers, and lawmakers across the political spectrum. Critics described the arrangement as unprecedented, with some calling it a "shakedown" that establishes a dangerous precedent for handling national security concerns. Democratic congressman Jake Auchincloss expressed alarm, stating that having the US government financially motivated to sell AI technology to China made him deeply concerned. Security specialists warned that these chips remain powerful accelerators of China's AI capabilities, potentially benefiting military applications including autonomous weapons systems and intelligence platforms. This revenue-sharing model raises fundamental questions about America's technology export strategy and national security priorities. Trade experts worry about implications for other US companies operating in China, questioning whether this represents a new taxation model on Chinese business dealings. While the arrangement could generate substantial revenue for the US government, critics argue that financial incentives should never influence national security decisions. The deal reflects the complex balance between economic interests and security concerns, potentially reshaping how future export control policies are developed and implemented in an era of intense technological competition. Announced [verb, made public or known]: The United States recently announced an extraordinary trade arrangement involving two major technology companies.Leading [adjective, most important or successful]: Nvidia and AMD, leading semiconductor manufacturers, have agreed to pay the American government fifteen percent of their revenues.Intensive [adjective, involving a lot of effort or activity]: This unprecedented deal emerged after intensive lobbying efforts, particularly from Nvidia's chief executive Jensen Huang.Massive [adjective, extremely large]: Both companies accepted the unusual requirement to access China's massive artificial intelligence market.Wi

To avoid dry eye syndrome, in addition to resting your eyes, you can use eye massage techniques and eat nutritious foods to alleviate the symptoms. Smartphone addicts and office workers glued to screens all day often go for long periods without blinking; this can lead to tiredness, dry eye syndrome and sore eyes. According to ophthalmologist Wang Meng-chi, getting a good night’s sleep and using a steam eye mask can help. However, Wang also recommends massaging acupressure points around the eye area, including the eyebrows, between and at the tips of the eyebrows, the temples, below the eye sockets and the corners of the eyes near the bridge of the nose. Wang advises massaging each of these areas in turn to relieve discomfort. In addition to massaging the eye area, nutritionist Kao Min-min also recommends eating certain foods, such as seasonal watermelon, which contains 90 percent water, and vegetables such as gherkin, cucumber and winter melon to relieve dry eye syndrome. Kao also recommends eating deep-sea fish such as salmon, tuna, Pacific saury and mackerel, which are rich in fish oils and can reduce inflammation, one to three times a week. Vegetable oil-containing foods such as nuts are also beneficial to eye health, Kao adds. Kao says a lack of vitamin A can increase the severity of dry eye syndrome so, in addition to taking in more oil-rich foods, she recommends supplementing the diet with starchy foods such as sweet potato or pumpkin, vegetables such as red and yellow peppers, fruits such as papaya, watermelon or cantaloupe melon and berry fruits such as blueberries. All of these foods contain anthocyanin, says Kao, which has antioxidant properties and is excellent at reducing inflammation. Source article: https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2020/07/15/2003739918 Next Article Topic: Thai mangosteens a gigantic hit in Taiwan It’s the sweet smell of success for Thai fruit exporters: Thai mangosteens have become an instant hit among Taiwanese consumers after the fruit went on sale there for the first time in 15 years, Department of Agriculture director-general Surmsuk Salakpetch said. “The Taiwanese press reported that consumers queued up to buy mangosteen from Thailand,” she said. “The first lot of 980 kilogrammes was sold out in only 30 minutes. ”Each box of four mangosteens was sold at Bt200 (NT$203),” Surmsuk added. “The unexpected positive response has proved a good opportunity for Thai exporters,” she said. “Since September 5, Thai entrepreneurs have exported 100,533kg of mangosteens to Taiwan, worth more than Bt20 million.” According to the director-general, Taiwan’s import standards require Thai mangosteens to undergo a steam treatment for decontamination and eradication of fruit flies – the latter being the reason why Taiwan had been rejecting fruits from Thailand for the past 15 years. “We have developed a technique to treat mangosteens at 46 degrees Celsius for 58 minutes, which is the optimal temperature and time so the taste of the fruits is not ruine
