L108: Wicked Sequel Dominates Global Box Office Highlights 主題摘要Wicked: For Good earned $226 million globally, breaking Broadway adaptation records. The sequel drew 2 million more viewers than Part 1, with 83% recommending it.The darker film explores consequences and features two brand-new emotional songs. Universal Pictures' gamble on splitting the beloved Broadway musical Wicked into two films has paid off spectacularly. Wicked: For Good soared to an impressive $226 million global debut, with $150 million coming from North American theaters during opening weekend. The release attracted approximately 2 million more viewers than the first film, demonstrating growing enthusiasm. Women comprised 71% of ticket buyers, and exit polls revealed that 83% would recommend the film to friends, indicating powerful word-of-mouth momentum through the holiday season. The sequel's triumph builds on Part 1's extraordinary foundation. Released exactly one year after the first film, which earned $758.7 million worldwide and received 10 Oscar nominations, For Good represents 2025's second biggest debut. Director Jon M. Chu's adaptation starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande has evolved into a cultural phenomenon, with IMAX screenings contributing $15.5 million domestically. The combined production cost reached approximately $300 million, making the sequel's performance essential for franchise viability and studio returns. Unlike the upbeat first installment, Part 2 delves into significantly darker territory. Chu describes the sequel as exploring consequences rather than decisions, with Elphaba undergoing complete transformation as she accesses her rage more fully. Erivo revealed her character's scent, makeup, and presence shifted to reflect this evolution into a more formidable witch. The film features two brand-new songs, including an emotional number that Erivo teases will deeply move audiences. The climactic "For Good" sequence reportedly left both actresses emotionally drained during filming, with Grande describing the shoot as overwhelming. The film's success arrives at a pivotal moment for theaters recovering from pandemic impacts. With domestic box office hovering around $7.5 billion, far below pre-pandemic levels exceeding $11 billion, Wicked: For Good joins upcoming releases attempting to push past the $9 billion threshold. Last year's Thanksgiving powered by Wicked, Moana 2, and Gladiator II set five-day records. Industry analysts believe the sequel establishes new benchmarks for musical adaptations while restoring confidence in theatrical releases. Viability [noun, ability to succeed or be sustained]: The combined production cost reached approximately $300 million, making the sequel's performance essential for franchise viability and studio returns.Delve [verb, to explore or examine deeply]: Unlike the upbeat first installment, Part 2 delves into significantly darker territory.Formidable [adjective, inspiring respect through power or strength]: Erivo revealed her character's presence shifted to reflect this evolution into a more formidable witch.Climactic [adjective, forming an exciting or important conclusion]: The climactic "For Good" sequence reportedly left both actresses emotionally drained during filming.Threshold [noun, a level at which something begins or changes]: Wicked: For Good joins upcoming releases attempting to push past the $9 billion threshold. All about Norway

Topic: Dark hair was common among Vikings, genetic study confirms They may have had a reputation for trade, braids and fearsome raids, but the Vikings were far from a single group of flaxen-haired, sea-faring Scandinavians. A genetic study of Viking-age human remains has not only confirmed that Vikings from different parts of Scandinavia set sail for different parts of the world, but has revealed that dark hair was more common among Vikings than Danes today. What’s more, while some were born Vikings, others adopted the culture — or perhaps had it thrust upon them. “Vikings were not restricted to blond Scandinavians,” said Eske Willerslev, a co-author of the research from the University of Cambridge and the University of Copenhagen. Writing in the journal Nature, Willerslev and colleagues report how they sequenced the genomes of 442 humans who lived across Europe between about 2,400BC and 1,600AD, with the majority from the Viking age — a period that stretched from around 750AD to 1050AD. The study also drew on existing data from more than 1,000 ancient individuals from non-Viking times, and 3,855 people living today. Among their results the team found that from the iron age, southern European genes entered Denmark and then spread north, while — to a lesser extent — genes from Asia entered Sweden. “Vikings are, genetically, not purely Scandinavian,” said Willerslev. However, the team found Viking age Scandinavians were not a uniform population, but clustered into three main groups — a finding that suggests Vikings from different parts of Scandinavia did not mix very much. The team found these groups roughly map on to present-day Scandinavian countries, although Vikings from south-west Sweden were genetically similar to their peers in Denmark. Genetic diversity was greatest in coastal regions. Further analysis confirmed the long-standing view that most Vikings in England came from Denmark, as reflected in place names and historical records, while the Baltic region was dominated by Swedish Vikings, and Vikings from Norway ventured to Ireland, Iceland, Greenland and the Isle of Man. However, the team says remains from Russia revealed some Vikings from Denmark also travelled east. The study also revealed raids were likely a local affair: the team found four brothers and another relative died in Salme, Estonia, in about 750AD, in what is thought could have been a raid, with others in the party likely to have been from the same part of Sweden. In addition, the team found two individuals from Orkney, who were buried with Viking swords, had no Scandinavian genetic ancestry. “[Being a Viking] is not a pure ethnic phenomenon, it is a lifestyle that you can adopt whether you are non-Scandinavian or Scandinavian,” said Willerslev, adding that genetic influences from abroad both before and during the Viking age might help explain why genetic variants for dark hair were relatively common among Vikings. Steve Ashby, an expert in Viking-age archaeology from the University of York, said the study confirmed what had been suspected about movement and trade in the Viking age, but also brought fresh detail. “The evidence for gene flow with southern Europe and Asia is striking, and sits well with recent research that argues for large-scale connectivity in this period,” he said. “[The study] also provides new information about levels of contact and isolation within Scandinavia itself, and offers an interesting insight into the composition of raiding parties.” Source article: https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2020/09/27/2003744127 Next Article Topic: In Norway, Electric and Hybrid Cars Outsell Conventional Models Sales of electric and hybrid cars in Norway outpaced those running on fossil fuels last year, cementing the cou

Time flies—2025 has entered its final month! This week on English Cafe, John and Cariya review the major digital marketing trends of this year and look ahead to predict developments in 2026. Can you imagine that 40% of Gen Zers no longer uses Google search? The younger generation now searches directly on TikTok and Instagram for information and products they want. Additionally, the short-form video trend continues to heat up, with videos under 30 seconds becoming the most popular ad format, and 65% of marketers planning to increase their budgets for vertical videos. But amid the AI disruption, the most impressive change is the "authenticity revolution" happening in brand marketing—continuing the DEI and political correctness trend but not completely following the formula. For instance, the recently resurrected "Victoria's Secret Fashion Show" has started featuring models of all body types and skin tones!

L104: Japan PM's Taiwan Remarks Trigger China Crisis Highlights 主題摘要Japanese PM Takaichi said Japan might respond militarily if China blockades Taiwan, ending strategic ambiguity.China retaliated with travel warnings, trade restrictions, and symbolic diplomatic gestures, escalating the dispute into economic confrontation. The conflict exposes deep historical wounds and threatens billions in bilateral trade between Asia's major economies. In early November, Japan's newly appointed Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi made a statement that shattered diplomatic norms. During a parliamentary session, she declared that a Chinese naval blockade of Taiwan could constitute a "survival-threatening situation" for Japan, potentially justifying military intervention. This frank acknowledgment departed sharply from Japan's traditional policy of strategic ambiguity, which deliberately avoided specifying how Tokyo would respond to a Taiwan crisis. China's reaction was swift and fierce, with Beijing demanding immediate retractions and warning of consequences. The dispute rapidly escalated beyond diplomatic protests. China issued travel advisories urging citizens to avoid Japan, targeting the nation's tourism sector that welcomed 7.5 million Chinese visitors in nine months. Major Chinese airlines offered refunds for Japan-bound flights, while authorities suspended Japanese film screenings and threatened seafood export bans. Beijing even took the matter to the United Nations, accusing Japan of planning aggression. Most symbolically, during bilateral talks in Beijing, Chinese diplomat Liu Jinsong wore a distinctive five-button suit associated with China's 1919 anti-imperialist movement, standing with hands in pockets while the Japanese envoy appeared to bow—an image that went viral on Chinese social media. China's fury reflects profound historical grievances. Imperial Japan's brutal occupation during the 20th century, including the Nanjing Massacre where over 200,000 civilians were killed, remains raw in Chinese collective memory. Beijing views Takaichi's hawkish stance as evidence that Japan seeks to revive militarism, particularly troubling as Tokyo increases defense spending and acquires counterstrike capabilities. For China, which considers reunification with Taiwan essential to its "national rejuvenation" by mid-century, Japan's potential interference threatens core strategic objectives. The territorial dispute over the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands adds another volatile layer to bilateral tensions. The standoff shows no signs of resolution. Takaichi has refused to retract her comments, maintaining they reflect Japan's consistent position, while China continues demanding apologies. The economic stakes are enormous: China is Japan's second-largest export market, purchasing $125 billion in Japanese goods annually, while Tokyo bought $152 billion from China in 2024. Japanese seafood exporters and businesses face mounting uncertainty. Both nations remain locked in a confrontation where neither side appears willing to back down, leaving the region's stability hanging in precarious balance. Blockade [noun, an act of sealing off a place to prevent goods or people from entering or leaving]: She declared that a Chinese naval blockade of Taiwan could constitute a "survival-threatening situation" for Japan.Symbolically [adverb, in a way that represents or expresses something]: Most symbolically, during bilateral talks in Beijing, Chinese diplomat Liu Jinsong wore a distinctive five-button suit associated with China's 1919 anti-imperialist mo

All about South America

Topic: As Economy Lags, Hugo Chavez's Movement Fades in Venezuela As president, Hugo Chavez lavished millions from this country's oil boom on his home state of Barinas. But boom has turned to bust, the economy is in shambles and the love affair is over. Similar sentiments are being heard around the continent, where political dynasties are falling or under intense pressure and where protests and social unrest are on the rise. In Brazil, legislators have begun an impeachment proceeding against President Dilma Rousseff, as scores of other political leaders have become embroiled in a huge corruption scandal. In Ecuador, protesters angry at President Rafael Correa have taken to the streets to demonstrate against budget cutbacks necessitated by vanishing oil revenues. And in Argentina, President Mauricio Macri was inaugurated last month after surging to a surprising win against the candidate of the Peronist party of his predecessor, Cristina Fernandez. His victory ended 12 years during which Fernandez or her late husband, Nestor Kirchner, occupied the presidential palace. The strains are being felt most keenly by leftist governments, but analysts say that something other than ideology is at work here. South America saw robust growth in the century's first decade, thanks to a historic boom in the value of raw materials and other commodities that are sold to the rest of the world. High prices for oil, natural gas, coal, copper, gold, silver, bauxite, soy beans and other products led to steady growth, a sharp drop in poverty and an expansion of the middle class throughout the region. That growth, in turn, brought political stability, with leaders and parties being repeatedly re-elected. "There's been a pretty striking continuity in many countries, in large part thanks to the commodities boom that leaders and parties have been riding," said Michael Shifter, president of the Inter-American Dialog, a policy analysis group in Washington. "When that's over, voters look elsewhere and for new leaders, but governing is extremely difficult because they no longer have the resources to meet the high expectations that have been generated during the commodities boom." Source article: https://paper.udn.com/udnpaper/POH0067/291818/web/ Next Article Topic: About Crime - Come to Rio, get robbed: Brazil tourism body shares awkward Instagram post Brazil's national tourism agency typically focuses on the city's world-class beaches, samba-filled music scene and caipirinha-fueled parties. Violent crime is rarely listed among the attractions. But in an embarrassing social media snafu this week, the Brazilian Tourist Board (Embratur) accidentally shared a critical Instagram post from a tourist who did not enjoy her stay in the so-called "Cidade Maravilhosa," or Marvelous City. "I just spent 3 days in Rio with my family, and in those 3 days my family and I were robbed and my 9-year-old sister witnessed a violent robbery," Instagram user "withlai" wrote in an Instagram Stories post. "I can't recommend a visit to a city where I felt afraid of even leaving the apartment." Embratur deleted the shared post on Wednesday. It said in a subsequent statement that "sharing (the post) was a mistake," adding that it had worked hard to promote a nationwide fall in crime in 2019. Safety concerns along with inconvenient flights, poor infrastructure and high costs have long held back Brazil's tourism industry, which lags its South American neighbors. Source article: https://features.ltn.com.tw/english/article/paper/1358564 Next Article Topic: Ecuadorean discovery pushes back origins of chocolate People have been enjoying chocolate far longer than previously known, according to research published on Monday detailing the domestication and use of cacao beginning 5,300 years ago at an ancient settlement in the highlands of southeastern Ecuador.

Summary: In recent years, people are opting to travel to experience the different lifestyles around the world. One of the most authentic ways is not to stay in a hotel or guesthouse, but to homestay. When travelling to Peru, Brain and Constance decided to homestay with Marie, a 65 year old widower and his son, Jonathon. Every evening, Brain and Constance would come home and be greeted and share their experience during the day with Marie and Jonathon like a family. Homestay was originally an alternative for backpackers or exchange students, now it is what people are looking for. A intimate, locally driven, nongeneric experience. For luxury tour planners, they are now including homestays as part of the local experience. In countries like Cuba, where lodging is limited, homestay is the best option.  討論原文章: https://www.15mins.today/blog/ep-793-their-home-is-yours  Vocabulary and Sample Sentences:  Host mother / host family n. – the family hosting travelers at their home The host mother would prepare breakfast every morning for the travelers as if they were her children. Living with a host family would give you an insider’s look at the local culture and lifestyle.  Intimate adj. – closely acquainted / familiar Peter and Amy had an intimate relationship, but no one knew for sure whether they were dating or not. Even if you want to be intimate with your girlfriend or boyfriend, it is better to practice social distancing during the outbreak    Itinerary n. – a planned route or journey My five-day itinerary includes three nights’ stay in a homestay and one night’s stay in Four Seasons. The travel agency will send us the itinerary next week to confirm our trip to North Korea.

L100: Dictionary.com Crowns "67" as 2025's Most Influential Term Highlights Dictionary.com named "67" its 2025 Word of the Year, a Gen Alpha slang term with no concrete meaning. The term originated from rapper Skrilla's song and viral NBA clips, spreading rapidly since October 2024."67" functions as an interjection and identity marker, showcasing Gen Alpha's linguistic creativity. Dictionary.com announced Wednesday that "67" — pronounced "six seven," not sixty-seven — has been chosen as its 2025 Word of the Year. Director of lexicography Steve Johnson noticed the term's pervasiveness across social media and schools nationwide. The turning point came when his friend, a middle school teacher, messaged him urgently: "Do not make six seven word of the year." Johnson immediately recognized that if educators were pleading against it, the term had achieved genuine cultural penetration. For parents and teachers dealing with students randomly shouting "67" throughout the day, this recognition feels bittersweet. What makes "67" unprecedented is its deliberate ambiguity. Unlike conventional words with established definitions, "67" resists concrete meaning. Some interpret it as "so-so" or "maybe this, maybe that," occasionally accompanied by palms facing up and moving alternately. However, Dictionary.com classifies it as "brainrot slang" — intentionally nonsensical and playfully absurd. Johnson explains that it functions primarily as an interjection, something people simply shout without expecting semantic clarity. This makes "67" the first word of the year in decades to prioritize sound over substance. The term's journey began with rapper Skrilla's song "Doot Doot (6 7)" in late 2024. TikTok and Instagram users quickly paired the song with basketball footage, particularly clips featuring NBA player LaMelo Ball, who stands 6 feet 7 inches tall. By October 2024, the meme had gained unstoppable momentum among young audiences, eventually appearing in "South Park" episodes. The combination of catchy audio, athletic visuals, and absurdist humor proved irresistible to Gen Alpha content creators. Beyond entertainment, "67" serves as a generational identity marker. Johnson describes it as an in-group signal, a way for Gen Alpha to assert, "I'm part of this generation." While older generations might dismiss it as meaningless noise, linguists recognize it as Gen Alpha flexing their linguistic creativity. The term's success demonstrates how digital natives reshape communication through deliberate absurdity and shared cultural references. Johnson remains curious about its longevity, noting that predicting slang's trajectory requires time — perhaps six or seven months. Pervasiveness [noun, the quality of spreading widely]: Johnson noticed the term's pervasiveness across social media and schools nationwide.Ambiguity [noun, the state of having unclear meaning]: What makes "67" unprecedented is its deliberate ambiguity.Momentum [noun, force gained by continuous development]: By October 2024, the meme had gained unstoppable momentum among young audiences.Absurdist [adjective, relating to meaningless and irrational ideas]: The combination of catchy audio, athletic visuals, and absurdist humor proved irresistible to Gen Alpha content creators.Trajectory [noun, the development pattern over time]: Johnson remains curious about its longevity, noting that predicting slang's trajectory requires time. 逐字稿如下: Topic: About Germany - Big cats' droppings help German circus weather coronavirus crisis One creature's droppings can be another's treasure, as Germany's Krone Circus is finding out during the new coronavirus pandemic. Home to 26 lions and tigers, the circus has found an unusual side income and raised money despite coronavirus-related restrictions: selling jars of big cats' droppings. Customers have told lion tamer Martin Lacey they swear by the stuff. "I am told it keeps cats away from the garden, and since then we have learned that also it keeps the animals away from the car, where they eat all the electric cables," Lacey said. The jars sell for 5 euros each, with some of the money going towards a charity to improve the living conditions of captive animals. And if you don't have a garden pest problem but find your neighbours pesky? – "Put some in the garden, and the neighbours will go away," Lacey chuckles. Next Article Topic: Berlin brothels reopen after lockdown, but no sex allowed Berlin's brothels were allowed to reopen last week after months of closure due to coronavirus restrictions – but full-on sex is still off-limits. Instead, clients looking for sexual healing in the German capital will have to make do with erotic massages until regulations are further relaxed in September. At the brothel where longtime sex worker Jana plies her trade, beds have been made, animal-print pillows fluffed and fresh flowers placed in vases. But Jana, 49, is looking forward to next month when she can offer the full service again. Sex work had been banned in Berlin since mid-March as part of efforts to control the spread of the coronavirus. Source article: https://features.ltn.com.tw/english/article/paper/1394745; https://features.ltn.com.tw/english/article/paper/1395609 Next Article Topic: About Europe - Sausage vending machines booming in Germany Hungry Germans craving a sausage in the dead of night are increasingly turning to vending machines for their bratwurst, bockwurst, and so on. The machines are booming outside German cities where shops are less likely to stay open for long hours, according to a survey by the German Press Agency. Some butchers' vending machines sell three or four types of sausages, and punnets of accompanying potato salad – so customers can buy all they need for a traditional hearty German feast anytime. There are over 570,000 vending machines in Germany, but despite their popularity they are expected to complement, rather than replace traditional shops. "Vending machines will play a complementary role in brick-and-mortar retailing," Wolfgang Kampmeier of the Berlin-Brandenburg trade association told the Berliner Zeitung newspaper. Source article: https://features.ltn.com.tw/english/article/paper/1354230 Next Article Topic: Slow music: Chord change in Germany of 639-year organ piece Hundreds of fans attended a special kind of musical happening on Sept. 5 at a church in Germany: a chord change in an organ piece that is supposed to last for an entirety of 639 years. The performance of the ORGAN2/ASLSP, or As Slow As Possible, composition began in September 2001 at the St. Burchardi Church in the eastern town of Halberstadt and is supposed to end in 2640 if all goes well. The music piece by the American composer John Cage is played on a special organ inside the medieval church. The last sound has been the same one for the last six years and 11 months, and therefore the chord change on Saturday last week was a big event among fans of the John Cage Organ Project. A chord change means that the sound of the organ pipes changes either because new sounds are added or existing sounds end. On Sept. 5, two new organ pipes were added. Organizers say the performance is "one of the slowest realizations of an organ musical piece." A compressor in the basement creates energy to blow air into the organ to create a continuous sound. John and Shimin also share their own experiences in their twenties, whether it was studying hard for the pharmacist licensing exam, or earning multiple degrees by age 21 yet feeling uncertain about life's direction and needing to slow down and reflect.

L096: Super Typhoon Strikes Philippines, Million Evacuate Highlights 主題摘要Typhoon Fung-wong hit Aurora province with winds reaching 185 km/h, forcing over 900,000 residents to evacuate. The storm arrived days after Typhoon Kalmaegi killed nearly 200 people and suspended rescue operations nationwide.Scientists warn that warming oceans could make future storms more intense for vulnerable nations like the Philippines. Typhoon Fung-wong slammed into the Philippines' Aurora province on Sunday evening as a super typhoon, bringing destructive winds and life-threatening conditions to the country's most populous island. The storm's eye hit Luzon at 9:10 PM local time with sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour and gusts reaching 230 kilometers per hour. By early Monday morning, the typhoon had weakened slightly but remained dangerous as it traveled westward across the island, prompting meteorological services to issue urgent warnings about storm surges and flooding. The disaster comes merely days after Typhoon Kalmaegi tore through the same regions, killing over 200 people and leaving more than 100 missing. Heavy rainfall from that earlier storm sent torrents of mud cascading down hillsides into residential neighborhoods, with some poorer communities completely obliterated by fast-moving flash floods. Civil aviation authorities closed multiple airports and cancelled nearly 300 flights as Fung-wong approached. Two fatalities have been confirmed so far, including a drowning victim and a woman trapped under debris in Catbalogan City. At evacuation shelters across central Aurora, families huddled together with young children too small to remember Typhoon Haiyan, which claimed over 6,000 lives in 2013. Jessa Zurbano, sheltering at a sports center with her family, expressed deep worry about the storm's strength and her children's safety. Another evacuee, Patry Azul, explained that her wooden house near the coastline felt unsafe during such extreme weather. Hotel worker Hagunoy stayed behind at his beachside workplace as long as possible, watching staff secure gates and tie windows with rope before eventually fleeing on his motorbike. The Philippines faces approximately 20 tropical cyclones annually due to its location near Pacific storm formation zones, making it one of the world's most vulnerable nations to such disasters. While climate change may not increase the overall number of typhoons globally, scientists emphasize that warmer oceans create conditions for more intense storms. The combination of rising sea temperatures and a warmer atmosphere can generate higher wind speeds, heavier rainfall, and greater coastal flooding risks, posing escalating threats to countries like the Philippines that already endure frequent devastating weather events. Gust [noun, a sudden strong rush of wind]: The storm's eye hit Luzon at 9:10 PM local time with sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour and gusts reaching 230 kilometers per hour.Cascade [verb, to pour downward rapidly in large quantities]: Heavy rainfall from that earlier storm sent torrents of mud cascading down hillsides into residential neighborhoods.Evacuee [noun, a person who has been moved from a dangerous place to somewhere safe]: Another evacuee, Patry Azul, explained that her wooden house near the coastline felt unsafe during such extreme weather.Annually [adverb, once every year or each year]: The Philippines faces approximately 20 tropical cyclones annually due to its location near Pacific storm formation zones.Generate [verb, to produce or create something]: The combination of rising sea tempera

All about Africa

Topic: Are African Artifacts Safer in Europe? Is Africa's cultural heritage better off in Europe or in Africa? That is the question at the heart of a yearslong debate that has gripped museums in Europe, where many officials say they support the idea of repatriating artifacts, but worry that African museums cannot compare to state-of-the-art facilities in Britain, France or Germany. That debate has been given new life in recent months after an investigation by the Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper found that many of the artifacts that will be on display in the Humboldt Forum, a huge new museum under construction in a rebuilt Berlin palace, had for years been stored in less-than-ideal conditions. The report featured searing depictions of flooded storage rooms and depots choked with toxic dust. The Humboldt Forum will bring together the collections of several existing museums in the city under one roof, but reports in German news media have focused on the storage facilities of the Ethnological Museum of Berlin, which will be the Forum's largest single contributor. Officials at the museum, which closed to the public in 2017 to prepare for the move to its new home, have responded with what observers call an unusual degree of openness. They have denied some of the reports, in particular the claim of flooded storerooms, but said their depots were beset with problems common to museums across Germany. Those included outdated facilities, a lack of staff members, and a sense of disarray that dates to moments of crisis in German history. Despite all that, they steadfastly rejected that those conditions might call into question their stewardship of the artifacts, many of which were collected during the era of European imperialism. Sindika Dokolo, a Congolese art collector who runs a foundation that has organized the return of artifacts to Congo and Angola, said it was true that "a whole generation" of museum professionals, like curators and conservationists, needed to be trained "in most of the African countries." But while that new generation was being trained, he said, it is European museums' responsibility to make sure African audiences had access to the artifacts in their possession. It is up to them to create the conditions that would let African artifacts "play their role where they need to be right now, in Africa," he added. Source article: https://paper.udn.com/udnpaper/POH0067/345221/web/ Next Article Topic: Neanderthal genes found for first time in African populations African populations have been revealed to share Neanderthal ancestry for the first time, in findings that add a new twist to the tale of ancient humans and our closest known relatives. Previously it was believed that only non-African populations carried Neanderthal genes due to interbreeding that took place after a major human migration out of Africa and across the globe about 60,000 years ago. The latest findings suggest human and Neanderthal lineages are more closely intertwined than once thought and point to far earlier interbreeding events, about 200,000 years ago. "Our results show this history was much more interesting and there were many waves of dispersal out of Africa, some of which led to admixture between modern humans and Neanderthals that we see in the genomes of all living individuals today," said Joshua Akey, an evolutionary biologist at Princeton University and senior author of the research. The study suggests living Europeans and Asians carry about 1 percent Neanderthal DNA, compared with on average 0.3 percent for those of African ancestry. Akey and colleagues believe that this Neanderthal DNA arrived in Africa with ancient Europeans whose ancestors — over many generations — had left Africa, met and mated with Neanderthals and then returned to Africa and mixed with local populations.

Reading Out Loud + Shadowing(必做!) Turns your passive learning into active learning!」 Where - 在哪裡? John老師說:「如果你用英文思考這些問題,you are already practicing it! You are already actively reflecting on the article!」 3.

Samsung launched Galaxy XR at $1,800, half the price of Apple's $3,500 Vision Pro headset. The device features 29 million pixels and weighs just 545 grams, lighter than Vision Pro.Running Android XR, it integrates Google Maps, YouTube, and Gemini AI for immersive experiences. Samsung unveiled its Galaxy XR headset at $1,800, directly challenging Apple's $3,500 Vision Pro. The pricing positions Samsung between Meta's $499 Quest 3 and Apple's premium offering. Available now in the United States and South Korea, Galaxy XR runs on Google's Android XR operating system with Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset. Early buyers receive an Explorer Pack including 12 months of Google AI Pro, YouTube Premium, and NBA League Pass access. The launch marks Samsung's ambitious entry into extended reality technology. Galaxy XR delivers impressive specifications that surpass Apple in key areas. Its micro OLED displays feature 29 million pixels with 4,032 pixels per inch (PPI), exceeding Vision Pro's 3,386 PPI for sharper visuals. At 545 grams, it's lighter than Apple's 600-gram headset, with weight distributed ergonomically to reduce facial pressure. However, Apple maintains advantages with Vision Pro's 120Hz refresh rate versus Galaxy XR's 90Hz, and its M5 computer chip provides substantially more processing power than mobile-oriented processors. Samsung's partnership with Google brings distinctive software capabilities. Users interact with Gemini AI to navigate immersive 3D Google Maps, discover YouTube content conversationally, and convert photos into three-dimensional experiences. Pass-through mode allows hand gestures to circle real-world objects for instant information. The headset supports multitasking with multiple apps at customizable sizes. Major streaming services including Crunchyroll, HBO Max, and Peacock have optimized their platforms for Android XR. Galaxy XR's launch intensifies competition in the mixed reality market currently dominated by Meta's Quest series. While Meta captures mainstream audiences with affordability and Apple established a premium niche, Samsung fills the middle ground with advanced specifications at accessible pricing. These headsets face similar battery limitations, providing roughly two hours of general use with external packs. As Android XR becomes available to other manufacturers, Samsung's early partnership with Google may prove crucial in capturing market share and defining standards for next-generation extended reality experiences. Ergonomically [adverb, designed to minimize discomfort]: At 545 grams, it's lighter with weight distributed ergonomically.Distinctive [adjective, clearly different and unique]: Samsung's partnership with Google brings distinctive software capabilities.Immersive [adjective, deeply engaging]: Users interact with Gemini AI to navigate immersive 3D Google Maps.Multitasking [noun, performing multiple tasks simultaneously]: The headset supports multitasking with multiple apps at customizable sizes.Intensifies [verb, makes more intense]: Galaxy XR's launch intensifies competition in the mixed reality market. All about Canada

Topic: Calgary Zoo returning pandas to China due to bamboo barriers The Calgary Zoo will be returning two giant pandas on loan from China because a scarcity of flights due to COVID-19 has caused problems with getting enough bamboo to feed them. Er Shun and Da Mao arrived in Canada in 2014 as part of a 10-year agreement between Canada and China. After spending five years at the Toronto Zoo, the two adult giant pandas arrived at the Calgary Zoo in March 2018 with cubs Jia Panpan and Jia Yueyue. The zoo's president, Clement Lanthier, said last week the facility spent months trying to overcome transportation barriers in acquiring fresh bamboo and decided it's best for the animals to be in China, where their main food source is abundant. "It's about the animals. At the end of the day, we cannot pretend that we care for animals if we don't take those tough decisions," Lanthier said. "We believe the best and safest place for Er Shun and Da Mao to be during these challenging and unprecedented times is where bamboo is abundant and easy to access." Lanthier said the zoo had contingency plans for a steady supply of fresh bamboo, but limits on flights from China was the first problem. Transporting more from California added even more frustrations. "Every week, every 10 days there is more and more problem moving bamboo to Calgary. This risk is unacceptable. We don't feel comfortable at all that we can impose that risk on the health and the welfare of the pandas." According to Lanthier, the animals didn't like some kinds of bamboo and other supplies that arrived were past their expiry point. Giant pandas have unique nutritional requirements and 99 percent of their diet is made up of fresh bamboo. Each adult consumes about 40kg daily. Lanthier said the news came as a bit of a shock to the Chinese government. In other locations where pandas are exhibited — such as France, Spain and parts of Asia — bamboo can be grown locally. He said the pandas had been one of the biggest draws at the Calgary Zoo, but the decision wasn't one about business. "It's based on animal welfare. I cannot imagine if one day, two days, three days in a row I am unable to provide the bamboo. That would be catastrophic." There's no date for when the pandas will return home. Lanthier doesn't want the Canadian and Chinese governments to delay things. "We need the federal government and the Chinese government to expedite the permit process, so we can move them back to where this risk of not getting their next meal will be managed differently," he said. Source article: https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2020/05/19/2003736635 Next Article Topic: Justin Trudeau's Official Home: Unfit for a Leader or Anyone Else At Canada's official residence for its prime minister, security cameras keep silent watch over the fences, visitors pass through gates that can block truck bombs and a detail of uniformed Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers patrol day and night. But the prime minister himself is unlikely to be found inside. When Justin Trudeau became prime minister three years ago, he took a pass on moving his family into the official residence at 24 Sussex Drive, built in 1868 by an American-born lumber baron. Decades of neglect had turned Canada's top political address into its most famous home renovation project. But no recent prime ministers have been willing to commit the tens of millions of dollars it would take to make the stone house habitable again. It would look as if they were spending money on themselves, a politically toxic step in Canada. Trudeau, 46, who lived at 24 Sussex as a child when his father was prime minister, is no exception. "No prime minister wants to spend a penny of taxpayer dollars on upkeeping that house," Trudeau told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. earlier this year. There was little criticism of Trudeau's decision to live with his wife

Learning by doing, learning by failing fast!

Apple just announced the latest iPhone 17 last month, and after watching the launch event, Teachers John and Cariya's first reaction was: "Tim, try harder if you want our money!" This week on English Cafe, John and Cariya discuss whether this new phone, touted as "Awe Dropping" (jaw-dropping), is really worth upgrading to. Cariya bought an iPhone 16 during last year's Singles' Day sale and originally felt no need to upgrade, but after talking it through, discovered that the all-day battery life and 20-minute to 50% fast charging features are somewhat tempting. John shares an interesting perspective: he switched to a white iPhone last year, but no one even noticed he changed phones, so if he's going to buy one this time, he definitely has to choose that super bright Cosmic Orange!

L088: Halloween's New Reality: Gummies Replace Chocolate Highlights Chocolate's Halloween market share dropped from 52% to 44% as fruity gummies gain popularity among younger consumers.Global cocoa prices quadrupled between 2023-2025 due to West African drought, making chocolate far more expensive.Non-chocolate candy sales surged 4.9% in 2024 while chocolate sales grew only 0.4%. This Halloween, trick-or-treaters might notice something different in their candy bags: fewer chocolate bars and more gummy bears, fruity chews, and freeze-dried treats. The shift reflects a major transformation in the Halloween candy market. According to market research from Circana, chocolate accounted for just 44% of Halloween candy sales in the weeks leading up to October 2025, down from 52% the previous year. This trend particularly appeals to younger consumers, who have been gravitating toward the diverse shapes, colors, and flavors that non-chocolate candies offer. Behind this sweet revolution lies a bitter reality: a global cocoa crisis. Between January 2023 and January 2025, cocoa prices skyrocketed more than fourfold, reaching $10,710 per metric ton—an all-time high. The culprit? Severe drought and climate change devastated cocoa harvests in West Africa, which produces 70% of the world's cocoa supply. This shortage hit consumers' wallets hard. In the 12 weeks before October 5, chocolate Halloween candy averaged $8.02 per pound, while non-chocolate alternatives cost just $5.77 per pound—a price gap that made many shoppers reconsider their purchasing decisions. The impact on consumer behavior has been dramatic. Despite these challenges, Americans spent $7.4 billion on Halloween candy in 2024, representing 18% of all annual candy sales. However, the distribution shifted notably: non-chocolate candy sales surged 4.9% while chocolate sales crawled forward at just 0.4%. Major manufacturers responded swiftly. Mars Inc. began rolling out Halloween products as early as July 5, planning two years ahead for each season. Hershey maintained its market leadership with a 40.8% share, though even its chocolate-heavy lineup faced growing competition from gummy and fruity alternatives. This transformation extends beyond individual trick-or-treat bags to broader market dynamics. Statistics Canada reported confectionery prices in Newfoundland and Labrador jumped 10.4% year-over-year, with similar increases nationwide. Retailers noted chocolate remaining 10-20% more expensive even after initial spikes. Yet Halloween spirit endures. Approximately 61% of consumers still purchased candy for trick-or-treaters, while 45% bought treats for themselves. Industry experts emphasize that Halloween celebrates more than candy—it's about costumes, community, and traditions. As families adapt to higher prices and evolving preferences, the holiday continues thriving, just with a more colorful, chewy twist. Gravitate [verb, to be drawn or attracted to something]: Younger consumers have been gravitating toward non-chocolate candies.Skyrocket [verb, to increase rapidly and dramatically]: Cocoa prices skyrocketed more than fourfold between 2023 and 2025.Devastate [verb, to cause severe damage or destruction]: Severe drought and climate change devastated cocoa harvests in West Africa.Recons

All about Thailand

Topic: Spray and pray - Thais celebrate Songkran Thailand's traditional New Year, as known as Songkran, is celebrated on April 13 to 15 every year. It is a time when people splash or spray one another with water, to symbolize washing away the old and welcoming the new. The word Songkran derives from the Sanskrit word for "passage" or "cross over," representing moving into a new year. Songkran is also celebrated in Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos. Known by the Taiwanese as the "splashing festival," Songkran conjures up images of street water fights, with participants using water pistols or buckets. It originated from a traditional Buddhist ritual, and the water represents purification and blessing. Songkran is about more than water fights. Traditionally, Thais also go to Buddhist temples to donate money or goods to the temple or monks during the festival, and the monks sprinkle holy water, symbolizing blessings, on them. People also bathe statues of the Buddha by pouring water over them. Thais will also sprinkle water in the hands of family elders, symbolizing respect and the receipt of the elders' blessings. Miss Songkran beauty contests are also held throughout Thailand, as a way to preserve traditional Thai costumes. There are around 700,000 migrant workers in Taiwan. Of these, just over 60,000 are from Thailand. In order to make Thai workers in Taiwan feel at home, Songkran was celebrated on Sunday at the ASEAN Square in Taichung, organized by the Ministry of Labor and the Taichung government. There will be another Songkran celebration held this coming Sunday at City Hall Square in New Taipei City. Source article: http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2019/04/17/2003713497 Next Article Topic: The Price of Recycling Old Laptops: Toxic Fumes in Thailand's Lungs Crouched on the ground in a dimly lit factory, women picked through the discarded innards of the modern world: batteries, circuit boards and bundles of wires. They broke down the scrap — known as hazardous electronic-waste, or e-waste — with hammers and raw hands. Residents have no idea what is in the smoke — plastic, metal, who knows? All they know is that it stinks and they feel sick. The factory, New Sky Metal, is part of a thriving e-waste industry across Southeast Asia, born of China's decision to stop accepting the world's electronic refuse, which was poisoning its land and people. Thailand in particular has become a center of the industry even as activists push back and its government wrestles to balance competing interests of public safety with the profits to be made from the lucrative trade. Last year, Thailand banned the import of foreign e-waste. Yet new factories are opening across the country, and tons of e-waste are being processed, environmental monitors and industry experts said. "E-waste has to go somewhere," said Jim Puckett, executive director of the Basel Action Network, which campaigns against trash dumping in poor countries, "and the Chinese are simply moving their entire operations to Southeast Asia." "The only way to make money is to get huge volume with cheap, illegal labor and pollute the hell out of the environment," he added. Each year, 50 million tons of e-waste are produced globally, according to the United Nations, as consumers grow accustomed to throwing away last year's model and acquiring the next new thing. The notion of recycling these gadgets sounds virtuous: an infinite loop of technological utility. But it is dirty and dangerous work to extract the tiny quantities of precious metals — like gold, silver and copper — from castoff phones, computers and televisions. For years, China took in much of the world's electronic refuse. A short gust of windForce 🎧 節目金句 "Don't get worked up! Take it one day at a time and enjoy your learning experience." "Every post on social media could be a learning opportunity for everybody, including yourself."

If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. He began his career as a salesman but found his true calling in public speaking. In 1912, he rented a YMCA room to teach public speaking, developing what would become the Dale Carnegie Course. His breakthrough came in 1936 with "How to Win Friends and Influence People," which has sold over 30 million copies and been translated into 36 languages. What many don't know is that Carnegie changed his surname's spelling from "Carnagey" to match that of industrialist Andrew Carnegie, hoping to benefit from the association. His teaching method was revolutionary – instead of focusing on theory, he emphasized practical experience and learning from mistakes. He would have students speak about their failures and learn from them, creating a supportive environment for personal growth. The Dale Carnegie Training program has graduated over 8 million people worldwide. Despite his success in teaching confidence, Carnegie himself battled depression and self-doubt throughout his life, making his achievements even more remarkable. 2. Before becoming a management guru, he served as a Mormon missionary in England. He earned his MBA from Harvard and a doctorate from Brigham Young University. Covey spent years researching success literature from the past 200 years before writing "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" (1989), which has sold over 25 million copies in 40 languages. The book took him over 20 years to develop. Covey created the concept of "paradigm shift" in personal development and introduced the idea of "abundance mentality" versus "scarcity mentality." L084: China's Rare Earth Gambit Highlights 主題摘要China added five rare earth elements to export restrictions before Trump-Xi talks.Foreign firms using Chinese materials must obtain export licenses.Defense users face denials while chip applications undergo case reviews. China announced major rare earth export control expansions on October 9, adding five elements—holmium, erbium, thulium, europium, and ytterbium—to its restriction list. These materials are vital for manufacturing products from smartphone screens to jet engines and military radar systems. The timing appears strategic, coming weeks before Presidents Trump and Xi meet in South Korea. Beijing controls over 90% of global rare earth processing, giving it significant leverage in trade negotiations. The Ministry of Commerce also added dozens of refining technologies to the control list. The new regulations extend Beijing's reach beyond its borders. Foreign companies producing rare earths or related magnets must obtain Chinese export licenses if their products contain Chinese equipment or materials, even when no Chinese firms are involved. This mirrors U.S. semiconductor export controls that restrict chipmaking equipment sales to China. Defense manufacturers will not receive licenses, while applications for advanced semiconductors—including 14-nanometer chips and memory chips with 256 layers or more—face rigorous scrutiny. The rules also cover artificial intelligence research with potential military applications, affecting major chipmakers in South Korea and Taiwan. Analysts view the expanded controls as positioning for the upcoming summit. "This helps with increasing leverage for Beijing ahead of the anticipated Trump-Xi summit," said Tim Zhang of Edge Research. The White House expressed concern that the rules were "imposed in an apparent effort to exert control over the entire world's technology supply chains." The announcement followed U.S. lawmakers' calls for broader bans on chipmaking equipment exports to China, reflecting escalating technological competition. Industry observers note this could mark the beginning of parallel supply chain systems. Market reactions were swift. Chinese rare earth companies surged, with China Northern Rare Earth Group gaining 10% and Shenghe Resources climbing 9.4%. U.S.-based producers also rallied, with Critical Metals jumping 25% and USA Rare Earth up 15%. Industry experts predict "structural bifurcation" as China localizes its value chain while the U.S. and allies accelerate efforts to build alternative networks. The restrictions take effect November 8, with foreign producer compliance requirements starting December 1, shortly before a 90-day trade truce expires. Strategic [adjective, carefully planned]: The timing appears strategic, coming weeks before Presidents Trump and Xi meet.Rigorous [adjective, thorough and strict]: Applications for advanced semiconductors face rigorous scrutiny.Exert [verb, to apply force or influence]: The rules were imposed in an apparent effort to exert control over supply chains.Bifurcation [noun, division into two parts]: Industry experts predict structural bifurcation in supply chains.Compliance [noun, following rules]: Foreign producer compliance requirements starting December 1. Rick Steves (Travel Writer and TV Host) Quote: "Travel is rich with learning opportunities, and the ultimate souvenir is a broader perspective." Rick Steves began his travel career in 1976, teaching piano to fund his trips across Europe. He started his business by giving travel lectures in his hometown of Edmonds, Washington, and self-published his first guide book "Europe Through the Back Door" in 1980. What sets Steves apart is his philosophy of "temporary local" travel – encouraging travelers to experience destinations like locals rather than tourists. His PBS show "Rick Steves' Europe" has aired since 2000, but he actually started in public television by doing travel segments for his local PBS station while washing dishes in their cafeteria. Despite his success, he still leads tours several weeks each year to stay connected with travelers and maintain his expertise. He advocates for what he calls "thoughtful travel" – using travel as a tool for breaking down cultural barriers and promoting global understanding. Interestingly, Steves maintains a policy of featuring only places that regular travelers can realistically visit, refusing to showcase exclusive resorts or luxury experiences that are out of reach for average tourists. 1. 2. Anthony Bourdain (Chef, Author, and Travel Documentarian) Quote: "If you're twenty-two, physically fit, hungry to learn and be better, I urge you to travel – as far and as widely as possible. Sleep on floors if you have to. Find out how other people live and eat and cook. Learn from them – wherever you go." Anthony Bourdain began his journey not as a travel writer but as a chef in New York City. His breakthrough came with his 2000 book "Kitchen Confidential," which led to his first TV show "A Cook's Tour." Bourdain was known for his unique approach to travel journalism, focusing on how food connects to larger cultural and political issues. He spoke French fluently and studied at Vassar College before dropping out to pursue cooking. During his career, he visited over 100 countries, often highlighting lesser-known destinations and local cuisine. What many don't know is that he wrote several crime novels before his food writing career took off. Bourdain insisted on paying for meals at restaurants featured in his shows to maintain journalistic integrity. He was also known for learning basic phrases in the local language of wherever he visited, believing it showed respect for the culture. His show "Parts Unknown" won multiple Emmy Awards and a Peabody Award for expanding viewers' cultural knowledge through food and travel. 2. 3. Bill Bryson (Travel Author) Quote: "To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted." Bill Bryson was born in Des Moines, Iowa, but spent much of his adult life in Britain, giving him a unique perspective on both American and British culture. His travel writing career began almost accidentally during a backpacking trip across Europe in the 1970s. He started keeping detailed notes about his experiences, which later became his first travel book "The Lost Continent." Bryson is known for combining historical research, scientific facts, and humor in his travel writing. He has served as the chancellor of Durham University and was made an honorary Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his contributions to literature. The 58-year-old industrial engineer turned politician reacted with shock upon learning of her win, speaking by telephone to Edmundo González Urrutia, her replacement candidate in last year's disputed presidential election. Machado's political career began in 2002 when she cofounded Sumate, a civil organization challenging Hugo Chávez's authoritarian policies. Her activism led to treason accusations and death threats that forced her children abroad. In 2023, she won the opposition's presidential primary, positioning herself to challenge Nicolas Maduro in 2024. However, Venezuela's Supreme Justice Tribunal upheld a ban preventing her from holding office, citing allegations of supporting US sanctions. Despite this setback, Machado rallied the fragmented opposition behind González, who won according to polling station tallies, though Maduro's government declared itself victorious. Following the disputed July 2024 election, Machado went into hiding within Venezuela, fearing for her life. In August, she briefly emerged to join street protests in Caracas, dressed in white, telling supporters they had never been stronger. When she reappeared in January 2025 before Maduro's inauguration, she was briefly arrested while waving a Venezuelan flag. Maduro's government accused her of conspiracy and dismissed the incident as a media distraction orchestrated by "fascists." She has since returned to hiding, maintaining contact with supporters through social media platforms. The Nobel Committee emphasized that Machado meets all criteria in Alfred Nobel's will, praising her work uniting opposition, resisting militarization, and supporting peaceful transition. Nobel chairman Jørgen Watne Frydnes highlighted her civilian courage as "one of the most extraordinary examples in Latin America in recent times." In a phone call with US President Donald Trump, Machado expressed gratitude for his efforts promoting peace globally. While Trump had publicly sought the prize, his spokesperson criticized the Nobel Committee for "placing politics over peace," though Trump has not personally commented. Persistent [adjective, continuing firmly despite difficulty]: Machado was recognized for her persistent efforts to promote democratic rights.Authoritarian [adjective, enforcing strict obedience to authority]: Her activism challenged Hugo Chávez's authoritarian policies.Fragmented [adjective, broken into separate parts]: Machado rallied the fragmented opposition behind González.Orchestrated [verb (past), arranged carefully, often secretly]: The incident was dismissed as a media distraction orchestrated by "fascists."Civilian [noun/adjective, relating to ordinary citizens]: Her civilian courage was

All about Belgium

Topic: Belgian city finds its former mayor's heart in a fountain For years it was just an urban myth. Then the diggers moved in and found it was true - that the heart of a former mayor of the eastern Belgian city of Verviers really was buried under a fountain. A small metal box, containing Pierre David's heart in an ethanol-filled jar, was uncovered during renovation work on the city's ornate stone fountain last month. The relic is mentioned in civic documents, but until it was found "no one really believed it," Verviers city councillor Maxime Degey told Reuters. David, the city's first mayor after Belgium became an independent country, was still in office when he died in 1839 after falling from a building. Authorities built a fountain in his honour and, with his family's permission, placed his heart under a stone in the monument in 1883. The box is on display at the Verviers Museum of Fine Arts and Ceramics. It will be returned to the Fontaine David in the city's Place Verte once the renovation is complete. Next Article Topic: Fifty meters up and two apart - Belgium's dinner-in-the-sky relaunches Belgians looking for a different culinary experience will once again be able to eat 50 metres above the ground as the dining-in-the-sky experience returns from COVID-19 lockdown with a new, socially distanced feel. Belgium-based Dinner in the Sky, which has been set up in some 60 countries since its 2006 launch, involves diners strapped into seats at a table suspended from a crane while well-known chefs cook and serve from the centre. Their original platform sat 22 people together along the perimeter, but in the COVID-19 era, up to 32 diners will now reserve four-person private tables spaced apart.
