S3 Ep 59It's Not You - It's Also Not Me - It's Incompatibility
This week Kat is diving into the space we enter when relationships don't work out. Have you ever wondered what you could have done differently to make your partner stay? Or have you spent hours analyzing your ex partners imperfections to deflect from the pain you feel after the relationship is over? Chances are- you've been there. The term "red flag" has become a term you hear everywhere and all the time and in this episode we are talking about why that is. Plus, we are giving you something better to focus on in order to heal from those past relationships. S3 Ep 57Please Stop Talking About Our Bodies with Josie Oldham, LMSW
This week, Kat is joined by another Three Cords Therapy therapist, Josie Oldham, LMSW. Josie specializes in body image, disordered eating, and eating disorders so Kat thought she would be the perfect guest to come on and talk about something that has been on her mind for a while now: The pressure to fit into certain "recovery minded" boxes perfectly. Recovery isn't linear, there isn't one way to do it. There isn't one belief system you have to have to live a life of freedom from diet culture. And whatever belief system fits with you- doesn't have to be perfect. We are so thankful that there are humans out there fighting the toxic beauty and wellness culture. . . AND we think it might be time that we start shifting the conversation so everyone just stops talking about our bodies :) Follow Kat on Instagram: @Kat.Defatta Follow the podcast Instagram: @YouNeedTherapyPodcast Have a question, concern, guest idea, something else? S3 Ep 55Striving to be Your Best Self Vs. Accepting Who You Are
Have you ever wondered where to draw the line between striving to be your best self and accepting who you are? This debate can seem quite confusing because they seem to be contradictory yet struggle to remain as healthy guides when standing alone. Limitless thinking can be super helpful at times, AND we have to be careful because it can lead us into muddy waters with no boundaries. And this unboundried idea that we can be anything we want starts to sound like we should be everything. On the other hand, when we soley grab onto self acceptance, this lackadaisical almost surrender to our potential shows up that can move us to a state of not trying and thus not even being our true selves. So, join Kat this week as she walks through ways to hold both self improvement and acceptance at the same time. S3 Ep 54Couch Talks: My Estranged Father Has Cancer, Should I Reach Out?
Couch Talks is the special bonus episode of You Need Therapy that comes out every Wednesday where Kat answers questions that listeners send to [email protected]. This week Kat reads an email from a listener about her struggle in deciding if she should reconnect with her estranged father after discovering he has been diagnosed with cancer for the second time. She shares an excerpt from Lori Gotlieb’s book, Maybe You Should Talk To Someone, where Lori discusses the ability to separate forgiveness from compassion. In times like these, we often look to find the “right” answers. We focus on what we feel like we should do rather than what we believe is right for us. And Kat leaves us with some questions and thoughts to help move listeners into a space where we can discern those things better! In this conversation you will also hear Shauna and Kat talk about the complexities of setting boundaries for and with yourself so you can live the life you actually want rather than a life that may look "impressive" to others. S3 Ep 51What if the Challenge is FOR You Not Against You?
Our nervous system needs to be activated in order to become resilient. We cannot become strong without first being tested. We have to have experience to gain experience. This truth is a wakeup call for all of us protective types, the people pleasers, and those who are afraid of the people they love experiencing pain. If we remove challenge from our lives and the lives of those around us- we also remove opportunity for them to grow strong, resilient and courageous. This week, Kat walks us through how some recent challenges and inconveniences have become opportunities for her to grow in a purposeful way. S3 Ep 47The Cost of Caring
We’ve learned that there is enough compassion for us all to validate and feel our own experiences. So, why then… are so many of us experiencing “compassion fatigue”? If compassion is an infinite resource then how do you run out of it? Well, this week Kat is trying to find an answer to that mystery. And it turns out… maybe it’s not compassion that we are exhausted of… If you are someone who has ever experienced compassion fatigue check out this episode to better understand what is really going on when caring for others starts to feel icky. Kat answers a listener’s question about compassion fatigue and talks about burn out in helping professions. Our listener has been having a difficult time coping with work lately – she works with cancer patients trying to help them engage in meaningful leisure activities. The job is so rewarding but she is feeling drained. She’s finding a lack of motivation in motivating others and asks Kat for advice because compassion fatigue is real! S3 Ep 19The Four Horsemen of the Relational Apocalypse Part 1: Criticism
Dr. John Gottman discovered four negative behaviors, or “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse,” that spell disaster for any relationship, and with them learned how to predict the failure or success of a relationship with a 90% accuracy rate. This week is the beginning of a 4 part series where we dive into each of the horsemen: Criticism, Contempt, Defensiveness, & Stonewalling. We are starting our series with Criticism, which is usually the horseman that shows up first when there is an issue in a relationship and sets the tone for how the conversation plays out. It can have the power to turn a bid for connection into an argument, which pushes us further from each other. The good news is that Dr. Gottman not only provided us with language for the problems, he offered us solutions or “antidotes” for each horseman. Listen this week to hear how to move from Criticizing your partner and creating more chaos to expressing healthy complaints and creating space to lean into our relationships. S3 Ep 17NEDA Week: Diet Culture Vs. Anti Diet Culture
This week is National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, a week to spread awareness, hope and resources for and about eating disorders. Most people who learn that eating disorders are the second deadliest mental health disorder are surprised, so the reason there has been so much uproar in the last couple of years about diet culture and the harm it causes goes wildly misunderstood. In honor of NEDA week, Kat explores and describes the polarizing experience happening now between diet culture and the more recent anti diet culture movement. And because this week is about hope- she talks about a position on this spectrum that might be more helpful than the options it feels like people have today. This week, Tara Booker is back for another installment of “The Difference Between,” a series where we break down the difference between a mental health related topic and how it shows up in pop culture. This week we rolled it back to the basics and talked about what therapy really is versuses how some popular tv shows portray it. Spoiler: It isn’t just us nodding our heads and asking you how you feel and it also isn’t us telling you what to do! Then we breakdown why sometimes “No” is a complete sentence and why sometimes its helpful to offer more information when setting a boundary. It all goes back to the grey nuanced reality of what relationships really are- and there isn’t a right way that works all of the time!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Couch Talks is the bonus episode of You Need Therapy where listeners send questions to [email protected]. This week we have a more specific follow up to last week's question about therapists finding closure when clients terminate the therapeutic relationship. The three more detailed questions explored in this episode are: 1. How do you find a sense of closure when there is no final conversation to process ending a therapist-client relationship? 2. What is the best way to respond to an email when a client wishes to discontinue therapy for the time being? 3. Is there a way for early therapists to communicate that therapy is not only used to process negative thoughts and events, but also maintenance and process positive thoughts and events? S3 Ep 11Safety Is Created Within with Courtney Grimes, LCSW
This week y'all are in for A TREAT with our guest, Courtney Grimes, LCSW. Courtney’s passion for helping others is something you will feel in the first 3 seconds of this episode. You will also probably laugh in the first few seconds because she is as hilarious as she is passionate and smart. This particular conversation was inspired by a comment that Courtney made on a work trip that she and Kat went on together when they were talking about the gaps and holes in the treatment and recovery process. Courtney said, "No one else cares about your recovery." This may at first sound off putting and harsh. But when you dig into it, this sentence offers up a huge serving of empowerment to take ownership and control of one's own life. What makes it so hard for people to maintain recovery at home when in treatment? Why do triggers pop up everywhere? What are we supposed to do with said triggers? How am I supposed to heal and be healthy if the world is so F*ed up??? You will find about 1 million reasons to take notes during this episode, so grab a pen and paper (or your notes app on your phone). One of Kat's favorite Courtney takeaways was, "Everything boils down to two things things: love and fear. Fear is made up of what if, versus what is. And what if isn’t real." So good, right?? Courtney co-founded a group therapy practice in Nashville called Symmetry Counseling. She serves as the Clinical Director for non-profit Renewed, and more recently founded The Collective. The Collective is an Extended Outpatient program, designed to bridge the gap between IOP and OP services, while providing a welcoming community for clients. Couch Talks is the bonus episode of You Need Therapy where listeners send questions to [email protected].
