S3 Ep 112The Bachelor Vs. The Old Maid
Have you heard of a marriage pact? You know, the deal you make with one of your best friends that says, if you aren't married by a certain age, you'll marry each other. Why would anyone do this, you ask? That is one of the questions Kat is asking this week as she dives into the pressure many women experience in finding a partner in early adulthood. Maybe it has to do with the fact single men have historically been swooned over as "eligible bachelors" while women are labeled "old maids" and "spinsters. Or maybe it is because they were scarred by the plot of "My Best Friends Wedding." This episode invites you into the current conversation Kat is having with herself as she reevaluates the way her younger self idealized finding a husband. S3 Ep 104Safety Is Created Within with Courtney Grimes, LCSW
This week y'all are in for A TREAT with our guest, Courtney Grimes, LCSW. Courtney’s passion for helping others is something you will feel in the first 3 seconds of this episode. You will also probably laugh in the first few seconds because she is as hilarious as she is passionate and smart. This particular conversation was inspired by a comment that Courtney made on a work trip that she and Kat went on together when they were talking about the gaps and holes in the treatment and recovery process. Courtney said, "No one else cares about your recovery." This may at first sound off putting and harsh. But when you dig into it, this sentence offers up a huge serving of empowerment to take ownership and control of one's own life. What makes it so hard for people to maintain recovery at home when in treatment? Why do triggers pop up everywhere? What are we supposed to do with said triggers? How am I supposed to heal and be healthy if the world is so F*ed up??? You will find about 1 million reasons to take notes during this episode, so grab a pen and paper (or your notes app on your phone). One of Kat's favorite Courtney takeaways was, "Everything boils down to two things things: love and fear. Fear is made up of what if, versus what is. And what if isn’t real." So good, right?? Courtney co-founded a group therapy practice in Nashville called Symmetry Counseling. She serves as the Clinical Director for non-profit Renewed, and more recently founded The Collective. The Collective is an Extended Outpatient program, designed to bridge the gap between IOP and OP services, while providing a welcoming community for clients. In this episode you will hear Kat talk about the importance of being flexible with plans and a small mindset change that has started to make a BIG difference in her life. In his book, The Infinite Game, Simon Sinek details the importance in playing to stay in the game versus to beat an opponent. S3 Ep 93Couch Talks: Can Faith & Therapy Co-Exist?
Couch Talks is the bonus episode of You Need Therapy where Kat answers questions listeners send to [email protected]. This week a listener writes in with a crisis involving the intersection of therapy and religion. "How do we know if the things going on in our heads are due to the “battle of good and evil” or just a matter of chemical imbalance and how can we both work on our mental health and surrender to a higher power." The good news here is that believing in the power of prayer doesn’t mean you don’t believe in therapy and going to therapy doesn’t mean you can't trust that a God exists. In this episode Kat discusses how both can fit and work together versus against! S3 Ep 90There is Gain in the Give
This week is inspired by the insanity that is, student loan debt in America. However, this episode isn’t realllyyy about student loan debt. This week is really about those moments where someone offers to help you but their goal isn’t really to help you, it’s to protect themselves. We are clearing up the space between only taking care of our own needs and ignoring our own needs to care for other people— the space where when we give we find that we also receive! S3 Ep 81Is Ozempic A Miracle Drug? with Jamison Worley MS, LDN, RDN, CNS
This week’s episode is one that Kat tried to avoid making… but eventually she had to join the conversation. For about the past year, drugs containing semiglutide (like ozempic) have been gaining popularity in doctor’s offices and in the media. So, is this what we have all been looking for? Did someone finally discover the cure for the “so called” disease that doctors are labeling as “Obesity.” In this episode, Kat invites her long time friend and colleague, Jamison Worley, to the show to talk about what semiglutide is, how it works, and what the current research actually says. Jamison is the founder of Worley Nutrition Group and is a licensed and registered dietitian that specializes in eating disorders, diabetes, and sports nutrition. S3 Ep 77Fake Science AND Joe Dispenza
This week Kat takes a DEEP dive into the ever popular meditation and “health” guru, Joe Dispenza. In this episode, Kat talks about what separates real science from pseudoscience (fake science that tries to pass as science). The tricky part is, pseudoscience mimics real science by co-opting their terms and using them in a way that sets you up to want to believe it’s true. Here we will discuss how we can keep an eye out for the red flags that scream “SCAM”. And what does Joe Dispenza have to do with all of this? S3 Ep 75I'm Going to Therapy for the First Time! With Josie Oldham and Julia Langer
Who remembers their first time? This week, Kat, Josie, and Julia reminisce on the first time they ever went to therapy. And surprise! All of their experiences were a little bit different. Kat refused to speak in her session, Julia's may have told her therapist what she didn't like about her, and Josie was wishing her therapist was "cooler". Kat wanted to have a conversation that talked about what it is like to go to therapy for the first time and what you may experience yourself because doing new things can be super intimidating. While we can't tell you exactly what it will be like- we can give you three perspectives from three different therapists. In this episode we answer listener questions including: What happens if I don't know what to talk about in session? How many sessions will it take to know if your therapist is the right fit? What kind of questions does a therapist ask during the first session? As a therapist, how do you prepare for a new client and what are some ways you try to ease the discomfort of a first timer? The Karpman Triangle, developed by Stephan Karpman, is a way to explain a very common pattern of dysfunctional relationship dynamics that includes three roles: persecutor, rescuer, and victim. This dynamic describes how people who were taught that it was unsafe to directly ask for what they needed to operate in order to still get their needs in some way. In this episode you will learn about the roles and how they play out and also find out how to get out of the cyclical pattern that playing these roles creates. S3 Ep 69The Family Scapegoat aka The Truth Teller
Have you ever had a consequence thrown at you for refusing to turn a blind eye? Or have you ever been punished for telling a secret that you never should have been asked to keep? If you answered yes to either of these questions you may have experienced being "scapegoated". This can happen when someone tries to bring order to a dysfunctional system. Doing so can throw off the sense of "order" within that system (even thought it's disordered). Having a scapegoat is a form of protection for that system. It allows them to push blame onto someone else so they can create the delusion that the system is healthier than it is. In this episode, we explore what that can look and feel like and what to do if you find yourself getting the shaft for telling the truth. S3 Ep 65From Denial to an Open Book: A Story of Recovery with Mathias John
Today we are rounding out our 3 part series on addiction. We started talking about it from a clinical/therapist perspective, then moved to the perspective of a loved one, and now we have a human who has actually walked through the throes of addiction themselves here to share part of their own story. Mathias John is someone I met years ago through his wife–who actually happens to be a therapist. Through his recovery journey he decided to offer the community something that he wished he had, a story he could relate to; a story about a high functioning addict who hid from himself and others really well. So, he took his ACTUAL PERSONAL JOURNALS and created a book out of them. Yep. He is welcoming us into his real mind- his most personal thoughts- and sharing what it was like for him to move through his life as someone struggling with addiction and someone working towards recovery. AND to top it off, he actually writes this book alongside his own therapist, Ashley Boyd. In our conversation we talk about a lot. What I hope you hear in this is something we can all relate to, a story about someone who tried their hardest to run from the truth and eventually found out that telling the truth would set them free. AND a story about that being really freaking hard and possible at the same time. Mathias’ book comes out September 14th and you can learn more about it HERE! S3 Ep 61Addiction 101: Is It A Choice? with Tara Booker, LCSW
This week, Tara Booker comes back to help Kat break down the basics of addiction. Which, you might be laughing at because there is nothing basic about explaining and understanding addiction. If you’ve ever struggled with addiction or loved someone who has, you’ll resonate with the fact that it’s a very confusing experience to have and watch. The behavior often makes zero sense when looking at it with just our naked eyes. This is largely due to the fact that a lot of the dysfunction is tied to what’s happening in our brains. So, join Tara and Kat today as they begin to help us all gain a little more understanding so we can all bring more compassion and hopefully healing to those that struggle with this disease affects.
