Standing in Two Worlds Episode 4-with Doctor Sam Juni PhD-Living in harmony with the Israeli Arabs-A Two State of Minds Analysis
In light of a number of essays and opinion piecespublished recently that reconsider the best options for the Jewish and Arab population in Israel to live in some state of harmony,Rabbi Kivelevitz asks Doctor Juni for his perspective. The professor responds with a cogently expressed explanation of Arab antagonism backed by surveys Juni and his wife,Esther conducted. He distinguishes between the minority struggles of Blacks in America,to Arabs living under Jewish state dominance in Eretz Yisroel.Juni's data indicating a stark increase in Islamic identification over the last decade cries out to be considered in any intelligent discussion on this matter.Kivelevitz wonders how the lack of religiosity evinced by a majority of the Jewish population helps feed the Islamic screed that our people represent an affront to God.The pair speculate to what extent the war deaths that haunt even the most liberal Jewish homes, precludes seeing the Arab as a co-citizen.Doctor Samuel Juniis one of the foremost research psychologists in the world today. He has published groundbreaking original research in seventy different peer reviewed journals, and is cited continuously with respect by colleagues and experts in the field who have built on his theories and observations.Samuel Juni studied inYeshivas Chaim Berlinunder Rav Yitzchack Hutner, and in Yeshiva University as aTalmidof Rav Joseph Dov Soloveitchick.ProfessorJuni is a prominent member of theAssociation of Orthodox Jewish Scientists, and has regularly presented addresses to captivated audiences.Associated with NYU since 1979,Juni has served as Director of MA and PhD programs, all the while heading teams engaged in important research.Professor Juni's scholarship on aberrant behavior across the cultural, ethnic, and religious spectrum is founded onpsychometric methodologyand based on a psycho-dynamicpsychopathologyperspective.He is possibly the world's expert inDifferential Diagnostics, with each of his myriad studiesentailing parallel efforts in theory construction and empirical data collection from normative and clinical populations.Professor Juni created and directed NYU's Graduate Program in Tel Aviv titledCross-Cultural Group Dynamics in Stressful Environments.Based inYerushalayim, he collaborates with Israeli academic and mental health specialists in the study of dissonant factors and tensions in the Arab-Israeli conflict and those within the Orthodox Jewish community, while exploring personality challenges of second-generation Holocaust survivors.Below is a partial list of the journalsto which Professor Juni has contributed over 120 articles. Many are available on lineJournal of Forensic PsychologyJournal of Aggression, Maltreatment, and Trauma.International Review of VictimologyThe Journal of Nervous and Mental DiseaseInternational Forum of PsychoanalysisJournal of Personality AssessmentJournal of Abnormal PsychologyJournal of Psychoanalytic AnthropologyPsychophysiologyPsychology and Human DevelopmentJournal of Sex ResearchJournal of Psychology and JudaismContemporary Family TherapyAmerican Journal on AddictionsJournal of Criminal PsychologyMental Health, Religion & CulturePlease leave us a review or email us at [email protected] See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. Rischa Daraiisa-31-Season Finale-The RCA only includes the Master's Voice-Can a Rabbinical Organization sponsor a debate on Black Lives Matter without a person of color represented?
In the last episode before a summer break, the Rabbis debate over debates.Rabbi Bechhofer believes that it is a mistake for the RCA to sponsor a "debate lishem shamayim" of how our community should relate to the Black Lives Matter movement.Bechhofer cogently describes why responses like "all lives matter" remains deeply offensive even to blacks who don't necessarily align themselves with the movement.Having a white man assume the "critical" position and another white man respond from the "sympathetic" side, can only result in a non edifying experience, along with a possible public relations debacle.Bechhofer notes that a debate by its very nature doesn't result in admission,it is staged to produce a winner,an idea he feels is antithetical to the Torah.Rabbi Kivelevitz responds with a brief examination of works of art, ancient dialogues, and classic medieval Rabbinic literature that served as a model for Rav Moshe Chaim Luzzatto's most effective works. These were all written in the form of a "vikuach" - a way to capture interest and bring home issues in a dramatic entertaining way,and lead to a thoughtful nuanced reaction by the leader/listener.Although Kivelevitz admits it would have been more prudent to have had an African-American involvement,he feels that the RCA deserve credit for tackling the issue while other Torah agencies are silent or openly hostile. While the speakers and moderator come from a white modern-Orthodox suburban world,Kivelevitz feels that the exercise is comparable to the experiment Jane Elliot administered to her young students in the wake of Dr.Martin Luther King's assassination. The all white Iowa school children were effected by "one of their own" with the aggressive first step out towards racial harmony in the"Blue Eyes/Brown Eyes Exercise."The pair agree over the dearth of solid oratory in the Rabbinic world and both give a thumbs up to the Denzel Washington vehicle-"The Great Debaters".comments and criticism welcome [email protected] more information on this podcast visityeshivaofnewark.jewishpodcasts.org See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. RambaN Vs.Rambam-Episode 5-A Life in Training-The performance of Mitzvos in Chutz LaAretz
This episode is dedicated לעילוי נשמת רב מסעוד אשר בן ביידה ז"לMasoud Asher Perez Z"lA Shiur that mines ancient texts for illuminating new understanding and relevance! The following is a letter from Rabbi Kivelevitz the host of the program.Shalom Ubracha-It is quite unnecessaryto state here how stressful the last few months have been.AsKlal Yisroel places an immeasurable value on learning and intellectual growth, many of us have weathered this storm by entrenching ourselves deeper into our rich literary heritage, discovering insight and inspiration and using the pause of hustle bustle activity to savor new texts and articulate probing questions. The tools of teleconferencing have generated thebrachaof wide attendance inShiurimand access to the world's finest Torah teachers. Energized by these positives, I am humbly offering to partner with all of you on a venture of discovery.Over twenty-five years ago, I listenedwith rapt attention as Professor Haym Soloveichick eulogized his father. He said theRambam,Maimonides, was theGirsa DaYankusaof his father, which the prodigygrew up memorizing like nursery rhymes, with all ofMishna Torahetched in his memory and flowing easily from his lip. However,it wasin that otherMoshe, Nachmanides, that the elder Soloveichickdiscovered his intellectual approach and soul.It can be assumed that Rav Soloveichick's flowering as the premier Talmudist of our times was built in great part by contrasting the words of each of these Medieval teachers in areas they had both worked on, or whereRambanlevels his often withering criticism ofRambam's position. There are scores of examples throughout Shas, and in particular in the work Nachmanides dedicated to staking his disagreements with his Egyptian counterpart-Hasagosto theRambam'sSefer HaMitzvos. In his classic toweringPerushonChumash,Rambanforcefully attacks many ofRambam's explanations ofmitzvosand interpretations of biblical events. In the coming weeks, we can together discover anew these diamond like gems ofcodification, inquiry analysis and poetic barbsthat issued from these giants.....-armed with the salient texts, and buoyed by an enthusiasm to discover, I relish the prospect of learning with you. On Principle-15-Challenges in Jewish Education with Professor Chaim Saiman-Mikol Milamdai Hiskalti--Yavneh-Sura-Pumpedeisa-Villanova-Nurturing the Talmudic mind in the bastions of secular higher education
Chaim Saiman is a world renowned scholar who holds the Chair in Jewish law at Villanova University. He is the author of the book,Halakhah: The Rabbinic Idea of Law which has met with wide acclaim.Professor Saiman regularly guides law students in the finer points of contracts, insurance regulations and coverage disputes and stresses the responsibilitythat citizens have towards each other'sprivate property. He also is an instructor each semester to a select group of aspiring lawyers taking his groundbreaking courses in Jewish Law.Rabbi Kivelevitz questions Professor Saiman on the challenges and rewards of giving over information culled primarily from the Talmud and the Halachic codes to students that are representative of all walks of American life.Saiman spells out his approach for conveying honestly the finer details of sugyos to non-Jews,without resorting to obvious apologia. He articulates his case that the Yeshiva trained students in his lectures are gaining an appreciation for Gemara material in mature authentic ways that were unavailable in the Yeshivos they studied in.Taking Hashavas Aveidah and Kibbud Av as examples ,the Professor indicates how the sources studied with respect and depth yield telling precedents to the foundations of American legal principles that continue to be fleshed out by legal scholars.Saiman sees his Yeshivish students as the vanguard of a growing dynamic sort of ba’al habos, thoroughly American, assiduous and identifiable as a Charedi. It had been assumed that such a community could not exist.Roshei Yeshiva from their side and sociologist and scholars of American religion from their side each used their own language to argue that economic and educationalintegration wouldinevitably lead to social and cultural integration, making the charedi side of the equation untenable.Saiman's students have defied these expectations. They and thousands of other former Yeshiva students in the fields of medicine, engineering and the social sciences havecreateda modern, partially integrated, orthodox society that is neither Modern Orthodox nor Ultra-Orthodox.Kivelevitz wonders if this newly formed wing can meet the challenges our communities are facing in a way that is legitimate and adheres to Daas Torah while wielding an inventive power that posits Klal Yisroel as leaders in the world.Professor Saiman has served as the Gruss Visiting Professor of Talmudic Law at both Harvard Law School and the University of Pennsylvania Law School, a visiting fellow at Princeton University and a visiting professor at the University of Toronto, Bar-Ilan, Hebrew University and IDC faculties of law.Saiman sits as a rabbinical court judge (dayyan) with the Beth Din of America andservesas an expert witness in insurance law and Jewish law in federal court.Professor Saiman received his B.S. from Georgia State University, and his J.D. from Columbia University School of Law. He also studied for a number of years at Yeshivat Har-Etzion (Gush) and Yeshivat Kerem B’Yavneh in Israel. Prior to joining the faculty at Villanova, he was an Olin Fellow at Harvard Law School a Golieb Fellow at NYU Law School, a law clerk to Judge Michael McConnell on the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals, and worked as a corporate associate with the firm Cleary Gottlieb in New York. Please leave us a review or email us at [email protected] out more about this podcast fromyeshivaofnewark.jewishpodcasts.org See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. RambaN Vs.Rambam Episode 3- Lo Sikravu-Measuring the Human Touch
Presenting a new Shiur that mines ancient texts for illuminating new understanding and relevance! Rischa Daraissa-29-Can we blame the Chasidim for the frum veldt's lack of uniformity in following social distancing guidelines,or is it a byproduct of living in large heterogeneous enclaves?
After patting themselves on the back for anticipating yet another brouhaha in the social media world over the lack of representation of women, the Rabbis discuss why congregants in many of the Shuls in areas of a large Jewish populace(Monsey,Borough Park,Lakewood)are in large part not conforming to the social distancing guidelines of the WHO and CDC .The pair spar over the extent Chasidim are to blame for the Shul irregularities in Bechhofer's Monsey.Kivelevitz attributes what Bechhofer is seeing to the general trends that have been documented, showing that Americans are less inclined to follow scientific health advice than persons in other countries.Bechhofer questions Kivelevitz as to why in his hometown of Elizabeth,New Jersey the Jewish populace are conforming to the strictures mandated by the city's Rabbis. Please respond with your input to these issues at [email protected] more information on this podcast visityeshivaofnewark.jewishpodcasts.org See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. Rischa Daraiisa-28- Disembodied voices-Why are the Women invisible in all the frum media/Where are the realistic options for school openings in the fall?
Rabbis Bechhofer and Kivelevitz fulminate against the policy that the frum magazines have of not featuring any photos of women in their publications. The pair praise the uplifting carefully constructed content that is regularly published, including recent inspiring profiles of Rabbis Hillel Goldberg and Aryeh Zev Ginzberg, yet are confounded by the editorial policies that do not allow images of females above the age of five to appear. These are the words of Doctor Leslie Ginsparg Klein(Ph.D. from New York University), the Academic Dean of Women’s Institute of Torah Seminary/Maalot Baltimore, an Orthodox Jewishcollege for women."...in the absence of images of modest women, the only images of women that boys and girls see are those of the secular media, which are oftentimes inappropriate by Orthodox standards. From an educational perspective, boys and girls need positive images to counteract the negative images they absorb from the media, and girls need modest role models to emulate. However, there are none. Instead, there is a policy thathypersexualizes women and girls, suggesting that even their faces are obscene. Instead of absorbing the messages of images of couples and families that reflect a normal, frum, healthy lifestyle, our children read books and see advertisements that show Shabbat tables with no mothers or sisters. This reality is damaging the spiritual health of the community and making it significantly harder to properly teach the concept of a healthy tznuis and body image to girls and boys.Additionally, erasing women contributes to the mistaken perception that women in Orthodoxy are second class citizens who should not be seen and are excluded from the public sphere. It leads to feelings of disenfranchisement infrumwomen and girls.Kivelevitz and Bechhofer also discuss the options for schooling in the upcoming months in ways that align with other forward thinking on the subject. Please respond with your input to these issues at [email protected] more information on this podcast visityeshivaofnewark.jewishpodcasts.org See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. His most recent isAuthentically Orthodox: A Tradition-Bound Faith in American Life.In a wide ranging discussion with Rabbi Kivelevitz,Rabbi Eleff recounts how the"Yeshiva-h"as H.T.C. is referred to, was able to manage through the worst days of thepandemic. While praising the technology of teleconferencing ,Eleff highlights aspects ofweaknesses in the model over and abovethose that have been pointed out by other educators. He applauds the dedicated veteran instructors who have forced themselves to learn newskills, providing an upgrade in the edification of future students. In the latter part of the episode, Rabbi Kivelevitz references Eleff'srecent article in Jewish Action Rabbi Leo Jung, Herman Wouk and their Little-Known Orthodox Societyand asks the author if the suggestion floated by the group highlighted in thearticle in the late 1940's-mainly that Orthodox institutions would be helped ifthey would be brought under one central head to make the appeal for allYeshivos, should be 2020's model.Kivelevitz wonders if this is the only realistic chance for religious schooling tocontinue unabated in the face of the economic depression the experts are predicting.Rabbi Eleff's elegant response is built on his expertise in the communal history ofAmerican Orthodoxy. In a similarly cogent vein, Eleff applies the crucial lesson that his articleunderscores, the power of laypeople, beyond the purview of an organizational umbrella, to make a pivotal mark on Jewish history in post Covid-19 life. The Rabbi supplies us with practical directives and examples that,if implemented, will unify our communities and enhance our religious sensibilities. Please leave us a review or email us at [email protected] more information on this podcast visityeshivaofnewark.jewishpodcasts.org See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. RambaN Vs.RambaM-Episode 1-What is the essence of Kedusha?
Presenting a new Shiur that mines ancient texts for illuminating new understanding and relevance! The tools of teleconferencing have generated the bracha of wide attendance in Shiurim and access to the world's finest Torah teachers. Energized by these positives, I am humbly offering to partner with all of you on a venture of discovery.Over twenty-five years ago, I listenedwith rapt attention as Professor Haym Soloveichick eulogized his father. He said theRambam,Maimonides, was theGirsa DaYankusaof his father, which the prodigygrew up memorizing like nursery rhymes, with all of Mishna Torah etched in his memory and flowing easily from his lip. Rischa Daraiisa-27-Call for a Revolution in Litvisha Yeshivos!Let Sefardi Bochurim and Retirees matter!
Inspired by two recent descriptions of a desire to expand learning options, one penned by a young student to Rav Moshe Tzuriel, andthe other a description of an exciting Corona era"return to the classroom " by 77 year old David Denby,Rabbi Kivelevitz lodges a complaint that the standard Yeshivos with their high powered exciting learning are not making the product available to senior citizens and discriminating against Sefardi bochurim. Please find below listener's responses(in italics) and Rabbi Kivelevitz's answers-you can be in this space as well! That was a surprisingly cynical discussion on yeshivos. Didn't seem to have a clear end game.Ireally have an issue with the way Ner Israel was run-and was a personal victim-it is hard not to be bitter.Work that I have had in recent yearsgivesme an insight into how they still operate. My main point was to make this great product truly available to allI would ask the following: Why is it that the Rav Chaim/Brisker method of learning, in only 100 years, has taken over as the seemingly sole representative style of learning gemara? Did yeshivos even exist before Cheftza and Gavra? Maybe what is needed is a restoration of the original methods of learning, rather than trying to shoehorn everyone into pilpul.Again-a good topic of discussion-Rav Zevin's Ishim Vishitos andShagar's book-Ubitoroso yehegeh-along with Marc Shapiro's book on Rav YY Weinberg are good places to gain perspective on how effective and necessary the revolution was.I think there already has been more change than you think-and the Brisker method has undergone a lot of dilutionAs to why pilpul and not Sefardi styleBekius or Sugya oriented Chasidic approach-One can read the material collected by Rav Simcha Asaf in Toldos HaChinuch BiYisroelin the sections that deal with the Maharal's call for change in instructionand read Rav YisroelSalanter's defense and passionate appeal for continuingand strengthening pilpulistic approaches that are blatantly untrue as a means of filtering young ego into ahavas haTorah-with corrections to be applied later.See in this regardIsrael Salanter, Text, Structure, Idea:The Ethics and Theology of an Early Psychologist of the Unconscious-by Hillel GoldbergYour most recent Rischa episode left me surprised. The only yeshiva I’ve ever learn at is Ohr Somayach Monsey (and its present gilgul). There have always been middle-aged and more elderly people learning in shiurim with bochurim, often with bochurim bchevrusa. I personally have a chevrusa with a nearly-70 yr old retired BT with no yeshiva experience prior to beginning learning full time five years ago. A friend of mine learned for years with a doctor, now in his eighties, who became observant and came to the yeshiva in his sixties. At one point, my shiur’s median age was probably around sixty. R’Bechhofer’s mechutan has been learning b’chevrusa with a recently-married friend of mine for around two years. Off the top of my head, I can think of eight people of this demographic ( approximately out of a total of 100 affiliated with the yeshiva, Kollel, and semicha program), around half of whom are FFB, who have been learning on campus. You are blessed indeed to have been part of such an institution-and they are to be commended-It is definitelynot the norm, and many of the elite schools boast incredible magideishiur-who should have those older fellows sitting in the front rowI guess a BT yeshiva is an exception to this norm. I always assumed I’d be able to return to learning in a yeshiva/Kollel setting upon retirement. Is this not the case?No one will kick you out of the building-as the situation stands now=efforts will not be made to integrate you into the youthful student body-and if the dismissive arrogance towards the older generationthat seems to be the standard stock of millenials continues to fester-don't expect to swim right away unless you knock them off their socksOutside of a BT yeshiva, what learning options are for the retired? Just chevrusas or specialized kolelim for them? That's why we did the Show-to start a grass roots movement and outcry against this ageismI am confused about the specifics of the problem. Is the lack of elderly in yeshivos simply because it’s culturally not what is done in yeshivish circles (why?),The point of the experience is to mold them for the future-create a type of Rebbe or Rosh KollelandBaalei Batim who will support the cause-not just for Ahavas HaTorah and there tobe aShaar Mitzuyin in HalachaRYGB gave you his theory on air..I think everyone fears the x-factor...so the yeshivos don’t try to attract them and they consequently feel unwelcome and refrain from participating? Or are they actively being excluded from yeshivos?I'm not sure if the two ways you present them are that differentAs in,they are deliberately excluded after inquiring about joining shiur.I don't have hard data-yet I would bet that the answer is yes-maybe couched with a modicum of respect and suggestions for other less intense

Zera Shimshon-Seeds of Holiness- Episode 8 - Chukas-Moshe's Failure seals Miriam's Death
Rabbi Kalman Worch leads theShiurthrough selected passages of theZera Shimshonthatexplain the relationship of the death of Miriam to the angry complaining and test of Moshe at Mei Merivah. The Zera Shimshon also illuminates the sections that describe the bitter diplomacy between Klal Yisroel and Edom over travelling through their land.Rabbi Shimshon Chaim had only one child, a son, who died at a young age. Rabbi Shimshon Chaim decided to dedicate his'Sefarim' to the memory of this child who had no continuity of a family. Hence the name "Zera Shimshon" In the introduction to his work,he promises that anyone that takes upon himself to learn from his writing, will be granted"children, praise, health, 'parnasa', wealth, honor".We thank the Illinois Center for Jewish Studies for the use of this materialPlease leave us a review or email us at [email protected] more information on this podcast visityeshivaofnewark.jewishpodcasts.org See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
