RambaN Vs.RambaM -Episode 14- Ralbag: Existing outside the Mesorah
AShiurthat mines ancient texts for illuminating new understanding and relevance! The following is a letter from Rabbi Kivelevitz .Shalom Ubracha-It is quite unnecessaryto state here how stressful the last few months have been.AsKlal Yisroel places an immeasurable value on learning and intellectual growth, many of us have weathered this storm by entrenching ourselves deeper into our rich literary heritage, discovering insight and inspiration and using the pause of hustle bustle activity to savor new texts and articulate probing questions. The tools of teleconferencing have generated thebrachaof wide attendance inShiurimand access to the world's finest Torah teachers. Energized by these positives, I am humbly offering to partner with all of you on a venture of discovery.Over twenty-five years ago, I listenedwith rapt attention as Professor Haym Soloveichick eulogized his father. He said theRambam,Maimonides, was theGirsa DaYankusaof his father, which the prodigygrew up memorizing like nursery rhymes, with all ofMishna Torahetched in his memory and flowing easily from his lip. However,it wasin that otherMoshe, Nachmanides, that the elder Soloveichickdiscovered his intellectual approach and soul.It can be assumed that Rav Soloveichick's flowering as the premier Talmudist of our times was built in great part by contrasting the words of each of these Medieval teachers in areas they had both worked on, or whereRambanlevels his often withering criticism ofRambam's position. There are scores of examples throughout Shas, and in particular in the work Nachmanides dedicated to staking his disagreements with his Egyptian counterpart-Hasagosto theRambam'sSefer HaMitzvos. In his classic toweringPerushonChumash,Rambanforcefully attacks many ofRambam's explanations ofmitzvosand interpretations of biblical events. In the coming weeks, we can together discover anew these diamond like gems ofcodification, inquiry analysis and poetic barbsthat issued from these giants.....-armed with the salient texts, and buoyed by an enthusiasm to discover, I relish the prospect of learning with you. Rischa D'Araisa-Season 2 Episode 9-Counterpoints:As we Learn to Mask-We need to unlearn our fear of death
The Rabbis deal with navigating the fear of death during the Pandemic ,and in general in life.Rabbi Bechhofer quotes Rav Yisroel Salanter's sage words(actually echoing Socrates) to the Alter of Novardok, while Rabbi Kivelevitz extols the nobility of the many persons he has known who have faced their mortality in exemplary fashion. They then call in Rabbi Bechhofer's wife,Shani, to discuss her article in the Jewish Press advocating strongly for mask wearing. She uses Rischa's forum to expand on some points and to respond to the arguments of Rabbi Michoel Green who sees the Mask Mandates as part of "An Anti-Jewish assault".Kivelevitz ridicules most of the spurious contentions Green offers, with Rebbetzin Bechhofer paying him a few backhanded compliments for ingenuity. On Principle -22-Challenges in Jewish Education with Rabbi Jon Kroll-Crafting a working "Electoral College" by having our High-schoolers engaged and voting on the issues beyond personalities
The renowned educator and Principal ofSAR High SchoolRabbi Jonathan Kroll and Rabbi Kivelevitz discuss what the special Election day programming at the school, and what has been done to promote better citizenship and speak honestly about divergent opinions.Below is a letter Rabbi Kroll and his administration sent out to parents :Teaching & Learning in Anticipation of Election Day 2020October 29, 2020Dear Parents,As citizens of the United States, we have the right to vote, to participate in shaping the government and the laws under which we live. And we have the responsibility to participate in political life in a way that respects the diversity of opinions of the citizens of our country. At SAR High School, we are a community of learners united by our commitments to Torah and Modern Orthodoxy, but with different perspectives on how those commitments translate into American politics. We want to prepare our students to be informed and civil participants in national and communal political discourse. We would like to share highlights of what we have been teaching and learning in anticipation ofElection Day 2020, as well as guidance for how to foster reflective conversation with your children.Sincerely,The SAR AdministrationCURRICULAR AND CO-CURRICULAR INITIATIVES:The History Department is preparing all of the students in SAR High School to be informed about some of the key policy stakes of this election, as well as about election procedures. 9th and 10th graders will gain a basic understanding of the differences between the two parties on issues, as well as the mechanics of how a presidential election is run. 11th and 12th graders, with more background in American history, will be able to discuss some of these issues in greater depth. The 12th grade AP US Government and Politics and Values of Citizenship classes will devote additional class time to deeper discussions of this year's election in the broader historical and political context. On Election Day, we will run a schoolwide election, enabling all SAR High School students to cast their ballots for president. We will continue our quadrennial tradition of Return for the Returns, although this year, it will of necessity take place on Zoom. In addition to watching the returns on Zoom together, teachers and some student leaders of the Electoral Politics and Government club will offer short presentations about key issues and races to watch.HOW TO TALK WITH HIGH SCHOOL CHILDREN ABOUT THE ELECTIONParents and teachers are well-equipped to navigate open and objective conversation and grapple with complexity, to help students concentrate on the important issues at play or where our candidates stand on them, and to model respectful disagreement and discourse.Nonetheless, kids are tuned into the current political climate. They are listening in to our conversations and trying to make sense of the ideas they encounter around the table, in the news, and on social media, and they share what they've heard with friends at school, which can often be skewed or flawed. Campaigns fraught with tension can bring up many challenging questions and emotions for children, making our influence as adults all the more important. When discussing the election with your child(ren), please consider the following:Focus on issues—not people, regardless of the candidates you support. This enables children to distinguish between a person's position and the person.Respect differing viewpoints. Let's resist the temptation towards the all-or-nothing discourse so common in American politics now. Model how to listen openly and consider diverse perspectives. Help our children understand that multiple points of view are possible, that not everyone thinks the way they do, and that we can respect another person's right to have an opinion even when disagreeing with them. A worthwhile exercise is to consider the values behind someone's position. You may not share those values, or you may think other ones are more important. But understanding that others' politics emerge from their values helps us engage differently, in a less scorched-earth way.Monitor your messaging. Kids are paying attention. Be conscious of your words and tone when expressing your views on the candidates and their stance on different topics. In a community of diverse political views, our children are learning from our modeling how to engage with people with whom they differ.Encourage deeper understanding. Ask, "What do you think about ___?" What questions do you have?" It's okay to let them know that you don't have all the answers, and to follow up with, "Let's find out," or "Let's think about that together." Often, our children's understanding of the issues of the day is limited to a snippet they saw on social media or a sound byte on the news. Our kids may be really interested in understanding the issues and the debates around them, and we should encourage them to formulate informed, thought-out positions, rather than knee-jerk, ofte

Standing in Two Worlds with Doctor Sam Juni- 16 - Jewish Liberalism, Intersectionality, and Antisemitism: An Unholy Alliance
Inspired by a fascinating monograph authored by J.J.Gross entitled Masculine Antisemtism/Feminine Antisemitism Feminine Jewishness/Masculine Jewishness, Doctor Juni adds his unique perspective to the phenomenon that has hounded our people relentlessly in various forms, Anti-Semitism. The complete episode results in an overall analysis by Juni and Kivelevitz of liberalism among modern Jews, and how it may be contributing to the de-identification of Jews with Judaism.Kivelevitz brings up the championing of total non-denominationalism by Jews who were part of major revolutionary movements (Communism, in particular) .Tikkun Olam ,though highly touted by many liberal thinkers as the salient contribution of the people of Israel, is seen by the Professor and the Rabbi as being part of an egalitarian Philosophy which has diluted authentic Judaism .Doctor Juni further argues that the trend advanced by academians and many clerics has led, what was once seen as a distinct religion, to be valued ,even by its members, only as a part of a contemporary intersectionality.Drawing on Gross' thesis, Juni underscores how this view has bred thinly veiled racism, outright prejudice, anti-Semitism and a demonizing of Zionism. The Doctor articulates a psychological basis for his observations of continued Jewish self-persecution and self-hatred. He relates this in great part to what he terms the “Galus Complex".Kivelevitz points out the similarities between the dwindling numbers of the Reform and Conservative movements and the deterioration of non-evangelical Protestant churches and, the sharp drop in attendance at Catholic Churches throughout the Western world.J.J. Gross is a veteran creative director and copywriter, who blogs frequently for the Times of Israel on both political issues and parshas hashavua. Doctor Samuel Juniis one of the foremost research psychologists in the world today. He has published groundbreaking original research in seventy different peer reviewed journals, and is cited continuously with respect by colleagues and experts in the field who have built on his theories and observations.Samuel Juni studied inYeshivas Chaim Berlinunder Rav Yitzchack Hutner, and in Yeshiva University as aTalmidof Rav Joseph Dov Soloveitchick.ProfessorJuni is a prominent member of theAssociation of Orthodox Jewish Scientists, and has regularly presented addresses to captivated audiences.Associated with NYU since 1979,Juni has served as Director of MA and PhD programs, all the while heading teams engaged in important research.Professor Juni's scholarship on aberrant behavior across the cultural, ethnic, and religious spectrum is founded onpsychometric methodologyand based on a psycho-dynamicpsychopathologyperspective.He is arguably the preeminent expert inDifferential Diagnostics, with each of his myriad studiesentailing parallel efforts in theory construction and empirical data collection from normative and clinical populations.Professor Juni created and directed NYU's Graduate Program in Tel Aviv titledCross-Cultural Group Dynamics in Stressful Environments.Based inYerushalayim, he collaborates with Israeli academic and mental health specialists in the study of dissonant factors and tensions in the Arab-Israeli conflict and those within the Orthodox Jewish community, while exploring personality challenges of second-generation Holocaust survivors.Below is a partial list of the journalsto which Professor Juni has contributed over 120 articles. Many are available on lineJournal of Forensic PsychologyJournal of Aggression, Maltreatment, and Trauma.International Review of VictimologyThe Journal of Nervous and Mental DiseaseInternational Forum of PsychoanalysisJournal of Personality AssessmentJournal of Abnormal PsychologyJournal of Psychoanalytic AnthropologyPsychophysiologyPsychology and Human DevelopmentJournal of Sex ResearchJournal of Psychology and JudaismContemporary Family TherapyAmerican Journal on AddictionsJournal of Criminal PsychologyMental Health, Religion & CultureAs Rosh Beis Medrash, Rabbi Avraham Kivelevitz serves asRavandPosekfor the morningminyanat IDT.Hundreds of listeners around the globe look forward to his weeklyShiurinTshuvos and Poskim.Rav Kivelevitz is aMaggid ShiurforDirshu Internationalin Talmud and Halacha as well as a Dayan with theBeth Din of America. Please leave us a review or email us at [email protected] more information on this podcast visityeshivaofnewark.jewishpodcasts.org See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. Rischa D'Araisa -Season 2 Episode 8 -Is learning Bichavrusa an impediment to individual growth?
Unlike a teacher-student relationship, in which the student memorizes and repeats the material back in tests,chavrusa-style learning puts each student in the position of analyzing the text, organizing his thoughts into logical arguments, explaining his reasoning to his partner, hearing out his partner's reasoning, and questioning and sharpening each other's ideas, often arriving at entirely new insights into the meaning of the text.Rabbi Kivelevitz challenges Rabbi Bechhofer on whether his individual learning and growth might have suffered by the necessary abandonment of intense multi hour chavrusa learning that is the general case of Rabbinic scholars as they advance from late adulthood to old-age.Bechhofer feels that when a mature scholar has their focus, the time and energy expended on mutual exploration and argument detracts from important projects that are incumbent on Talmidei Chachamim. He further opines that the "chovos Adam Biolomo"points to more teaching of younger or less experienced persons.Kivelevitz is skeptical if his friend would embrace that idea so strongly if the remuneration that Bechhofer receives from his study partners would be withdrawn. He invokes a contra version of fulfilling God's will by charging all senior members of the Talmudic fraternity to follow the examples of Rav Shmuel Berenbaum Zt'l and Rav Yaakov Jofen Zt"l in re-examining familiar material fresh with a perspective of measured more sophisticated daas to truly bond with God through Torah study. Please send comments to [email protected] See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. Emeritus Rex-Reflections and Insights from Rabbi Reuben Poupko-A forty year veteran of the Rabbinate-Episode 2- Shots fired from across the border : Our religious and political divisions can obscure what is at stake in the American election
A brand new interview program that seeks to pick the brain of one of the most influential Rabbinic figures of North America.RabbiReuben Joshua Poupko has been the Rabbi ofBeth Israel Beth Aaron Congregation in Montrealfor over 30 years.Rabbi Poupko from his Canadian perch sketches cogently the debate in the Jewish community over supporting President Trump. He explains why Orthodox Jews have a more cynical attitude to politics, and the reasons why Trump polls so strongly among them.Poupko draws parallels and distinction between the support Canadian Jewry began to give to the Conservative Party, and how the George W, Bush period stirred Jews to the Republican party. He enlightens Kivelevitz about the real politick that the Parti Québécois used not to alienate their Jewish constituents when they came into power.Kivelevitz and Poupko reminisce over some of the important political figures in the United States over the last fifty years, with Poupko cogently describing why who the next American President is serves as the the hottest topic under discussion globally across all religious communities.Rabbi Poupko predicts that many of the positive changes the Trump administration engendered in Israel policy will probably survive into the Biden-Harris era with the realization of the changes to the facts on the ground as they relate to Iran and the new peace accords with the U.A.E, and Bahrain.Kivelevitz hopes that Biden will bring in top flight intellectual thinkers as Richard Nixon did whose surveying of the political landscape can be free of ugly bias.Rabbi Poupko opines about Netanyahu's political chances in the coming months and how an incoming Democratic administration will struggle to maintain a positive bond with some one they see as a Republican foreign agent. He also provides many interesting insider tidbits as to what might have caused the thawing of relationships with the Saudis. Standing in Two Worlds with Doctor Sam Juni -Episode 15 -Mental Health Fallout of Coping (and Mis-Coping) with Corona Anxiety
Recent events of social and community upheaval in the USA and Israel are examined through the general lens of Ego Psychology. Misguided coping strategies with the anxiety spawned by the Corona Pandemic are seen as contributing to the unraveling of the social fabric globally, resulting in general discord, eruptions of violence, and vocal intergroup hatred. Rabbi Kivelevitz suggests that the failure of these strategies has been the primary fuel for the destruction associated with BLM protests, election-related conspiracies, the erosion of civility in politics, and group-engendered dangerous health practices. Prof. Juni spells out adaptive and disruptive psychological Defense Mechanism options which we all use to deal with in coping with personal, family, and prolonged crisis situations, and outlines specific stances which are most likely to protect individuals and families from decompensation. He highlights extant American conspiracy theories, anti-mask movements, outrageous violence/looting protests, grouping these phenomena with extremist Israeli agitation of religious wars among certain sects, rock throwers, police baiting, and “Shabbes” or “Shiksa” yellers – pointing to such extremist behaviors as telltale signs of reactive defensive processes against intolerable threats of anxiety.Prodded by Rabbi Kivelevitz to articulate a recipe for coping, Prof. Juni outlines adaptive strategies with Corona anxiety, stressing rational assessments of contagion chance based on accurate data and urging those with severe coping difficulties to request from their physiciansprescription anti-anxiety medicationto be taken PRN (as needed).Doctor Samuel Juniis one of the foremost research psychologists in the world today. RambaN Vs. RambaM Episode 12 Spanning two millennia: Days of Adam and Noach- What was their secret?
AShiurthat mines ancient texts for illuminating new understanding and relevance! The following is a letter from Rabbi Kivelevitz the host of the program.Shalom Ubracha-It is quite unnecessaryto state here how stressful the last few months have been.AsKlal Yisroel places an immeasurable value on learning and intellectual growth, many of us have weathered this storm by entrenching ourselves deeper into our rich literary heritage, discovering insight and inspiration and using the pause of hustle bustle activity to savor new texts and articulate probing questions. Rischa D'Araisa-Season 2 Episode 7-Should the Satmar Rov be classified in the category of "Flawed Gedolim"??
On the basis of material culled together in this eight year old blog-Rabbi Bechhofer demands Rabbi Kivelevitz admit to his conclusion that Rav Yoel zt"l suffered from serious flaws which demote him in comparison to other giants of the 20th century. Kivelevitz forces himself to read the ugly invective that the young Rav Teitelbaum penned against the first Chief Rabbi of Modern Israel,Rav Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen Kook.Rabbi Bechhofer points out that despite the Rov being saved by Kastner a staunch Zionist, and his community reaping the benefits of Israeli government policy,Rav Teitelbaum never recanted or softened his extreme positions. Rabbi Kivelevitz offers justification for the incendiary language used by the Satmarer,as his intense belief that the whole edifice of creation was threatened by Zionism and any figure that lent it support.Kivelevitz feels that Bechhofer's ire should be directed more concerning the Rov's views on the wars that defended the State of Israel.
