Dedicated to theRefuah Shleimahof Tamar Elisheva Bas DevorahUsing material from culled from the groundbreakingTzurba M'Rabananlearning guide,Rabbi Kivelevitz leads theShiurfrom the salient Talmudic passages of who must bear the expense burden for a parent's needs through the statements of the Rashba that requests that do not directly enhance your parent's physical comfort are not part of the Mitzvah of Kibud Av.He bases his assertion on the description of the mitzvah that appears in the Gemara (Kiddushin 31b), which gives the examples of “providing food and drink, clothing them, and helping them enter and leave a building.” The class analyzes the words of Rama who quotes a ruling of the Maharik (167) that a son is not required to honor a parent’s demand that he refrain from marrying a particular woman. The Sefer Hamakneh (Kiddushin 31b )on the other hand, rules that the mitzvah of mora av va’eim (revering parents) requires one to obey a parent’s request even if it will not benefit the parent. Indeed, the Gemara (Kiddushin 31b) states that this mitzvah forbids a child to contradict his parents’ words, which, the Sefer Hamakneh believes, includes disobeying the parent’s orders. This approach is amplified by the Chazon Ish and fine tuned and codified by the latter's nephew in the Halachic classic,Chut Shani, the Peaskim ofRav Nissim Karelitz Ztz"l-Kivelevitz peppers this special episode with many real life actual situations(the desire of children to change their last name for convenience) that underscore the patent difficulty of this Mitzvah.Rabbi Avraham Kivelevitz has spent the last eight years writing and teaching for Dirshu International'sDaf Yomi B'Halacha,In general, every episode ofFine Tuned Halachadelves into an important Halachic textand extracts important nuggets of direction, history and most importantly,an understanding of how the Jewish legal system developed and continues to guide the lives of a committed people. While the learning tends to align with the seasons we find ourselves in,we are confident it will resonate well beyond the calendar into your consciousness. Please leave us a review or email us at [email protected] See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
