S1 Ep 883WR883: SubCity
EAlthough a global pandemic threw a wrench into their initial reunion plans four years ago, reggae/soul/rock n’ rollers SubCity are coming back for one night only at the Park Theatre April 13.Here's my conversation with Darryl (sax) and Johannes (vocals/guitar) about next month’s show — their first as SubCity in a dozen years — the band’s history and legacy, whether they’re a ska band and how to define it, and much more.Although neither guest has been on the podcast before to talk about SubCity, they've each been on a few times to talk about other projects over the years. Darryl was on episodes #040 (Sept. 2013) and #058 (Jan. 2014), plus he played in our Big Mix-Up and Little Mix-Up bands (#220 and #216, 2017). S1 Ep 874In memoriam: Caid Jones
EFeb. 12 marked the tragic death of Cayden Carfrae, better known to local hip-hop fans as Caid Jones. He was only 24 years old. While I didn't know Caid well, I had the chance to talk to him on the podcast back in April of 2021 -- at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic -- and I found him to be a very passionate, insightful, inspiring artist, who was also very involved in activism and advocacy for the local Indigenous community. If I could have picked any of the up-and-coming artists I've interviewed over the past few years to be destined for bigger and better things, it would have been him. You can find tributes all over from people who knew him better than I did, including writeups in the Winnipeg Free Press and on the Manitoba Music site. There's also a GoFundMe to raise money for his family to help pay the costs associated with his funeral -- with any excess funds raised going, fittingly, to community arts and youth organizations. Please support it if you can. This episode is a re-release of our 2021 interview. Positive vibes to Caid's family and friends.

S1 Ep 873WR873: Góra

(Note: sometimes when I have this many people on the show at once, a few guests' voices can get a bit warbly, depending on their connection, but it definitely doesn't take away from the quality of the conversation) This episode brought to you by our pals at Devine Shirt Company.Huge thanks to everyone who supports the podcast on Patreon. S1 Ep 862In memoriam: Jaimz Asmundson of Ghost Twin
EOn New Year's Day, local musician and filmmaker Jaimz Asmundson passed away. I didn't know Jaimz very well, but he was a guest on the podcast twice -- once in 2014 and once in 2021 -- as a member of synthwave duo Ghost Twin. As evidenced by this tribute from Winnipeg's iconic Dave Barber Cinematheque, Jaimz was an integral part of the local film community, who remember him far more eloquently than I ever could: https://davebarbercinematheque.com/in-loving-memory-of-jaimz-asmundson/This episode collects his two appearances on Witchpolice Radio as an interviewee, the earliest of which was one of the 'lost' episodes that wasn't currently on the podcast feed, and includes a live on-air performance. Sending positive vibes to Jaimz's family and friends.
