S1 Ep 982From the Vault: Carly Dow and Sheldon Birnie (2014)
EWe interrupt your regularly-scheduled programming with an episode from the vault -- March 20, 2014, to be exact -- featuring singer-songwriter Carly Dow and writer/musician Sheldon Birnie. For those unfamiliar with the archival episodes -- when I moved all of my episodes from one hosting provider to another, years ago, I accidentally missed the inclusion of a couple dozen episodes from 2013-14. They're not currently on the feed if you're scrolling through the episodes on Apple Podcasts/Spotify/whatever. I've been slowwwwwly re-releasing these over the past few years, and here's another. This one is particularly notable because it has absolutely deadly live performances by each of the guests. Here's what we said about this one back in 2014: "Singer/songwriter Carly Dow and Cheering for the Bad Guy frontman Sheldon Birnie — also the editor of Stylus Magazine — join the fellas to talk about the “nuclear” theme, which takes a weird twist from the expected material. "Sheldon also talks about his gig as a freelance writer, which has seen him take on pieces for publications as disparate as Vice and Canadian Dimension. Carly talks about her in-the-works new album, upcoming shows... and of course Juicebox ends up getting mentioned for the umpteenth time on the podcast." S1 Ep 978WR978: Irvin Miller
EI sat down with Irvin Miller, a recent transplant to Winnipeg (via Nova Scotia), for a conversation about soul, country, folk, and especially gospel music. His sound is a throwback to the 1950s and ‘60s, and he’s working on new music inspired by a wide array of influences. EGood chat on this episode with two members of crossover thrash outfit Trauma Shot!Tune in for a conversation about their brand-spankin' new EP, ‘Where Weakness Dies’, shifting toward more hardcore influences, and much more… Note: this one jumped the queue a little bit because the new EP just came out a day or two ago, so it was a little time-sensitive. S1 Ep 976WR976: Yer Mum
EFun hang with long-running local screaming enthusiasts Yer Mum, who are capping off more than a dozen years of punk rock with one last hurrah!Stay tuned for a conversation about Yer Mum’s last show (March 28 at the Osborne Taphouse), songs that never got recorded, jumping over people on skateboards, their actual mums’ opinions on the band, and more… Note: one of the band members had kind of a shitty connection, so it can be a bit choppy when he speaks, but it doesn't detract from the overall quality of the conversation. Need more Yer Mum (yes you fucking do)? Check out episode #412 (Aug. 2019). Want to support this podcast? Get access to loads of bonus content and more on the Witchpolice Patreon page! S1 Ep 975In memoriam: Jory Strachan
EThese episodes are the absolute worst. I realize that with the sheer quantity of podcasts I do, the odds are that some of the people I've interviewed are going to pass away too soon, but it's never any easier. This episode compiles various appearances on the show by Jory Strachan, who was a member of the bands 1971 and Rust Owl, and made solo music under the name Wrecker. Jory was just the nicest guy. He was on the show a few times over the years talking about various projects, and he even participated in one of the first live Witchpolice events, which led to his cameo appearance in a TV interview we did to promote it. I didn’t know him super well, but every interaction I had with him was delightful, whether it was a podcast interview, randomly running into him out and about, or even conversations on social media. He actually just started following my personal Instagram a few days before the news came out that he had passed. On this episode, you'll hear (in order): an interview with Jory and Bailee Woods (a/k/a Housepanther) about their split 'Homewrecker' record, the audio from the aforementioned TV interview on Shaw Cable Access, an interview with 1971 which includes a live acoustic performance, and a brief clip Rust Owl recorded while on a boat in B.C., encouraging people to check out my podcast. The goal of these 'in memoriam' episodes is to make sure, in some kind of small way, that the wonderful art created by people like Jory lives on, so I hope those who knew him can take some solace in hearing his voice and his songs again. RIP to a really good dude who made great music. ...and in an effort to keep other late local artists' work alive, you may want to check out some of the other in memoriam episodes with past interviewees we lost too soon.

S1 Ep 974WR974: Odd Doll Records
EManitoba has a new record label! This episode features my conversation with Elise Roller of Odd Doll Records! We talk about launching a women-owned label, releasing music by local artists like Kelly Bado — whose new single is Odd Doll’s first-ever release — and much more! S1 Ep 973WR973: Empaths in Retrograde (with guest host Stiff Wiggle)

S1 Ep 971WR971: Pink Snot
ELocal “no core” punks Pink Snot are on the verge of releasing the new long-player ‘Dead Messenger’, so we sat down for a conversation about punk rock concept albums, the way their sound has progressed, some huge upcoming shows, and more!Note: As sometimes happens when interviewing a group of people (in the same room) remotely, there are some weird echo things that happen occasionally on this one, where it may sound like one of the band members' voices has temporarily doubled. I don't think it detracts from the conversation at all, but just wanted to point it out.Need more Pink Snot? Check out episode #690 (May 2022).Want to support this podcast? S1 Ep 967WR967: Closetjudas Live Session
EAfter the success (in the sense that it actually worked) of the first attempt at recording a live set at my house, I'm planning on doing a bunch more of these. Interviews will remain the focus of the podcast, but every once in a while, you'll get some live music. This episode features alt-rock singer-songwriter Closetjudas performing five songs live and direct from the relative comfort of my dining room (which has decent sound, for some reason). S1 Ep 964WR964: Favourite local albums of 2024 #5-1
EAs I do every year, I've made a list of my favourite local albums of 2024. Did I miss albums? Absolutely. Did I immediately question my judgement after I finished narrowing it down to 20? Yuppers. But for good or ill, there are 20 releases by local artists I want to highlight.Continuing the tradition I began a couple years ago, I've recorded a series of episodes counting down the records on my list, including interview clips and songs. This fourth and final installment covers my top five albums in my unscientifically ranked list, which includes 'We Were Born Here, What's Your Excuse?' by The Secret Beach (episode #911), 'The Unsuspected and Unstoppable' by Fuller Hull (episode #932), 'Nassau Manor' by Epic and Rob Crooks (episode #916), 'I Can Be Two People At Once' by Touching (episode #894), and 'Until the Sun Comes' by Tetyana Haraschuk (episode #926). S1 Ep 960WR960: Paul Hodgert Live
E...so I had this great idea to occasionally record live sessions by local artists (at my house) and release them as music-only episodes of the podcast. Singer/songwriter/Jawbreaker fan/tall person Paul Hodgert volunteered to be the guinea pig, but with a twist -- he had access to all kinds of fancy video equipment, so we turned the recording into a livestream that aired Dec. 19 on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. This episode is strictly the audio from the show, with a bunch of dead air and whatnot cut out. Half an hour or so of wall-to-wall music. Hoping to do more of these in future, so stay tuned for that at some point... and also stayed tuned for my annual list of favourite local albums of the year, which will come out over a series of episodes beginning this week. Note: Paul's 'Paul Is Dead' tape is on that list. Not revealing the placement, though. Need more Paul? S1 Ep 950From the Vault: Kevin Roy and Carey Buss (2014)
ETechnical difficulties this weekend mean you don't get a new episode (sorry), but you get one that might be new to a lot of you: it's the original episode #069 from spring 2014, featuring folk-inspired singer-songwriters Kevin Roy and Carey Buss! Here's what we said about the episode a decade ago: It’s a rootsy, folky, acoustic episode with live performances by guests Kevin Roy and Carey Buss! Both of these fellers are about to head out west on tour, so we give them a sendoff by talking about the oh-so-fitting (but still randomly-generated) “wood” theme.Need more from these guests? Kevin (later known as Mister K) was also on episode #210 (Dec. 2016) and #543 (Dec. 2020), while Carey also appeared on #130 (June 2015).Back to your regularly-scheduled programming in a few days. Thanks.

S1 Ep 944WR944: Sansregret
EWhen I was at the Manitoba Loud Music Awards show a month or so ago, a pleasant surprise was seeing a live set by self-proclaimed ‘stoner punk’ outfit Sansregret!I sat down with some of the members to talk about music with a message — and why it’s great to scream that message — as well as defining the ‘Winnipeg sound’ and much more. If you're listening to this episode the day it comes out, Sansregret is actually playing a show tonight at Club Happenings, with a bunch of other local punk bands and drag performers. If you're in the future and that already happened.... sorry! Note: the editing program I've been using for almost a dozen years for this podcast finally crapped out on me, and it's so old it's not supported anymore, so I had to use something else. I don't think it's noticeable, but if it sounds different from other episodes, that's why. Want to support this podcast? Get access to loads of bonus content and more on the Witchpolice Patreon page!
