S1 Ep 930WR930: Greg Rekus
EThe first time Greg Rekus was on the podcast was way back in 2014 — so he’s been appearing on the show for a full decade now — and he remains one of my favourite people to interview. Here's our conversation about his latest LP, 'Sinners go to Church, Saints go to Jail' the ins and outs of heavy touring, and the idea that while DIY is great, DIT (Do It Together) is far more important. Need more Rekus in your life? Check out episodes #056 (Jan. 2014), #218 (Feb. 2017), #450 (Jan. 2020), #718 (Aug. 2022), and a micro-interview on #584 (April 2021). Want to support the show? S1 Ep 929WR929: Aaron Carnes ('In Defense of Ska')
EA few years back, I was on an episode of 'Unscripted Moments: A Podcast About Propagandhi', talking about the ‘90s Winnipeg ska scene alongside members of Whole Lotta Milka. Also on that episode (in a separate interview) was Aaron Carnes, author (and podcast host) of 'In Defense of Ska'.Aaron has a new expanded edition of his book coming out soon, so — even though he’s not local — we sat down and nerded out about the book, Canadian ska and its near-total anonymity in the U.S., revamping ska’s image, mozzarella sticks, and more!Check out our conversation, and thank you for occasionally indulging me when I make episodes that have little to no connection to Manitoba music. Back to actual local shit next episode, I promise. Want to support the show? Get access to loads of bonus content and more on the Patreon page! S1 Ep 926WR926: Tetyana Haraschuk
EIt should come as no surprise to regular listeners that I really dig the work of local drummer/composer Tetyana Haraschuk (making her fourth appearance on the podcast), but her new record, ‘Until the Sun Comes’, takes things to the next level. Here's our conversation about the album — an emotional, boundary-pushing companion piece to a new documentary film based around Tetyana’s interviews with Ukrainian war refugees. It’s heavy subject matter, but focusing on the impact of war on individual civilians… and then translating their anxiety, fear, aspirations, etc. into a motherfucker of a great jazz record… you just gotta hear it. Need to hear more from Tetyana? Check out her appearances on episodes #630 (Oct. 2021), #698 (June 2022), and #816 (Aug. 2023) Want to support the show? Great conversation on this episode with Devon Gillingham and Theresa Thor, both of whom are dropping brand new records on Aug. 24 at the West End Cultural Centre! We chat about the releases — one free-jazz meets alt-rock, the other sad avant-pop piano songs — as well as the mechanics behind doing a double album release, what kind of audience they expect, and much more! This episode marks Devon's first appearance on the podcast to date, but Theresa is a familiar name and voice to longtime listeners. At the time this episode is being posted, they're days away from the release of the excellent Nassau Manor LP (Saskatoon Folk Rap Records/Hand'Solo Records), which was recorded here in Winnipeg and is coming out July 26 on vinyl, CD, and that streaming shit the kids like. Need more? Epic last appeared on episode #508 (Aug. 2020). S1 Ep 915WR915: Nic Dyson (with guest hosts Sean and Todd McGinity)
EIt should come as no surprise to regular Witchpolice listeners that I'm a big fan of singer-songwriter Nic Dyson's music, so when guest host Sean McGinity suggested recording a new interview with Nic, I was all for it. Sean is joined by his brother Todd in the guest-hosting chair for this episode -- a familiar situation for the McGinitys, who have released 500 episodes of their own Seangeek and FastFret Podcast!Nic, Sean and Todd have a very sweet conversation on this one, all about emotional music, Nic's new punk band and balancing that with his intensely personal solo work, and so much more. (Speaking of weirdness: for some reason five minutes of the conversation near the end did not want to cooperate with me, so I had to edit around it, but I may update the audio file later on to include it. Thanks.) Huge shoutout to S. Wiggle for the hosting assist. Stiff -- a past interviewee on this very show -- did the team proud in this interview. S1 Ep 893WR893: Scott Price (CKUW)
E...so this one ended up with very serendipitous timing. I actually recorded it near the beginning of April, but it got bumped by a few time-sensitive episodes. By complete coincidence, its eventual release date -- today, April 30 -- is the 25th anniversary of CKUW 95.9 FM on the public airwaves! Tune in for a chat with CKUW’s program director, Scott Price, about the auspicious anniversary (and the upcoming live show to celebrate it), the importance of DIY volunteer-driven media, and much more! Note: I lost about two minutes of audio right at the end of our conversation, so the very tail end of this episode uses the backup recording, which is slightly lower-quality... in case you were wondering why the sound changes.Need more Scott in your life? S1 Ep 892WR892: Yung Balboa / Loverboy Nel / Austentatious
EThis one's a little different. It's part of a series of episodes I'm doing in collaboration with local rapper Ezoman's Creative Side Entertainment for this year's 'Future of M"you"sic' competition, which is a six-month long showcase of up-and-coming local artists at the Limelight. Here's the second episode, which is similar to my old Quick Hits format (remember that?), and it features a clip of Ezoman giving some background on the event (note my quick robo-correction of the date in the intro), plus micro-interviews with a few of the artists participating in the second stage of the competition on April 25: Yung Balboa, Loverboy Nel, and Austentatious.Check out the previous month's episode, feat. S1 Ep 891WR891: Jared McKetiak (UMFM)
EJared McKetiak is the longtime big wheel down at Winnipeg's mighty campus/community radio staple UMFM 101.5. We sat down for a conversation about falling in love with alternative radio, how the station navigated the pandemic, and the way UMFM stays afloat thanks to the generosity of its passionate listeners. Did you know that UMFM is one of the many places you can hear Witchpolice Radio? Tune in at 7 a.m. Fridays!(Since UMFM’s Pledge-O-Rama fundraising drive is happening right now, this one jumped the queue and came out before a previously-recorded interview I did about the city's other campus/community station, CKUW. S1 Ep 889WR889: 'Mom's House' interviews pt.II (2017-18)
EIf you heard episode #886, which came out earlier this month, you know what this is. It's the second collection of interviews I did for the now-defunct YouTube show 'Mom's House', which was a project by local DIY filmmaking collective Young Media. This episode features three interviews I conducted as a guest host (plus live performances) for the show, featuring Colour by Numbers -- a band that includes Jared Adams, who was just on the podcast last month for episode #880 and Alex Kozub (episode #542)-- Joe Curtis (who appeared on episode #313), and Jacob Letkeman (#633 as a member of A Topiary) and Chenoa McKelvey (#532 with Smith's Onion). S1 Ep 887WR887: Solhounds
ERemember Solhounds? It’s been a minute, but the 'heavy metal grunge' outfit is back this month for their first show in five years or so (April 26 at the West End Cultural Centre). They’ll be playing two sets: one of original music, and the other… heavy versions of music from the Shania Twain songbook. Here's our conversation about the reunion gig, what the future holds, the WHY?!?!? of the whole SolTwain thing, and much more! Need more Solhounds in your life? Hear earlier incarnations of the band on episode #142 (Aug. 2015) and #249 (Sept. 2017). S1 Ep 886WR886: 'Mom's House' interviews pt. I (2017-18)
EI'm not the only one out here interviewing local artists. Beginning in 2017, a group of DIY filmmakers who operated as a collective called Young Media put out a YouTube show called 'Mom's House'. The short-lived channel featured a bunch of guest hosts, and I was lucky enough to have hosted a total of six episodes. 'Mom's House' is long-defunct, and while the videos are still out there on Young Media's inactive YouTube channel, I thought it would be fun to reintroduce the show to Witchpolice podcast listeners. This episode features three interviews I conducted (plus live performances) for the show, featuring Northern Lights Drive, Jason G. Eastwood (also heard on the podcast on episode #668), plus Micah Erenberg (#499) with Sophie Stevens (#304). Stay tuned for a part II, featuring three more artists, to be released in the next couple of weeks. S1 Ep 885WR885: Quinton Blair
EThe reason Quinton Blair is one of my favourite guests on the podcast is the same reason he’s one of my favourite local songwriters: dude can tell a story.I caught up with Q on the road outside a truck stop somewhere in Alberta. Here's our conversation about his new music, weekend jaunts out west, learning a songbook and a half of country covers through osmosis, pop radio maintaining its stranglehold on country… and much more! Need more Quinton Blair in your life? Check out his past appearances on episodes #665 (Feb. 2022), #428 (Oct. 2019), #396 (June 2019), #162 (Jan. 2016) and #127 (May 2015) This episode brought to you by our pals at Devine Shirt Company.Huge thanks to everyone who supports the podcast on Patreon! S1 Ep 884WR884: Compost
EInstrumental trio (drums/bass/Rhodes) Compost recently put out an excellent debut tape of “nutrient rich music for a healthy body and mind” — inspired by ‘90s hip-hop beats, jazz, electronic music, etc.Stay tuned for a conversation about their improv-heavy writing and recording process, future plans, and much more!
