E

There’s a municipal election happening, Winnipeg, and as your friendly neighbourhood music podcast, I sat down with a couple of folks from the local music scene who happen to be running for council.Stay tuned for a great conversation with Omar Kinnarath (who you may remember from local hardcore bands like Intafada and Rogue Nation back in the day), and Natalie Smith (ex-Silence Kit, now in Mulligrub). As I’ve said in EVERY election-themed show I’ve done over the years, I’m not endorsing either candidate (I’m not in their wards anyway) or anyone else. Please read up on the candidates in your area and vote for whoever best represents you. Just vote.Back to your regularly-scheduled programming next episode! S1 Ep 728From the Vault: Beefdonut (2014)

E

As many of you know, I lost my voice recently, so I couldn't record as many interviews this week as I usually would. In order to not miss an episode, I decided to re-release one of the "lost" podcasts from 2014 -- an early Witchpolice recording that didn't get added to the current podcast feed. This one was originally released as #83, featuring Joel "Beefdonut" Klaverkamp as our guest. It was selected based on your social media votes. I hope you dig it. It's in the show's old format, so if you're new to Witchpolice Radio, you're better off listening to a 2022 episode, but if you're looking for a fun throwback, here we are. Here's what I said about it back in 2014:This week, Sam and Rob hang out with longtime stalwart of the Winnipeg music scene, Joel Klaverkamp. In addition to 20+ years of work under the name Beefdonut (including an excellent new album), Joel has played with very recognizable names in the city's musical history, including The Hummers, Skingerbreadman ...and the legendary (only to us) band that convinced us DIY music was possible way back in the 90s, Alien Hybrid!Jon was away for this episode, so we couldn't use our regular studio spot in his basement. This one was recorded in a spot Joel had access to "high above Winnipeg's historic Exchange District," so if you notice an inferior sound quality throughout, it's because we're not on home ice for this one.Back to your regularly-scheduled content in a few days! Thanks, y'all!

Winnipeg indie/art rock outfit Yes We Mystic will soon cease to exist, but after more than a decade together, they’re going out with a bang.I talked to Mystic member Adam Fuhr about the band’s upcoming final LP, the video project that accompanies it, the Trust Fall hotline (1-877-347-5231), and how final is “final”, really? Fred Warner, bassist and bandleader of jazz fusion outfit Freddy and the Fire Nation, is back on the show after first appearing on a Quick Hits episode last year.We talked about the band’s upcoming releases, about focusing on a slick, produced sound versus “that greasy goodness”, playing shows, and much more. Just a heads-up that there were some technical difficulties on this one (as heard in the intro), but it's still a fun listen. Also, since the Fire Nation's full-band recordings have yet to be released, the songs you'll hear on this podcast are Fred's solo demos. S1 Ep 702WR702: Ben Lowe

E

Winnipeg’s Ben Lowe is the new face behind the bass for acclaimed Canadian blues/rock/reggae staples Big Sugar, but it’s in his blood — he’s the son of late Big Sugar bassist (and reggae icon) Garry Lowe.We talked about carrying on his dad’s legacy, finding time to play music with his own trio here in Winnipeg, and much more. As regular listeners know, I like to include songs by the interviewee in each episode, but Ben said he wasn't sure he had any of his own material he was ready to share (yet)... "so why not use some Big Sugar?"...so I found a pandemic cut of "If I Had My Way," featuring a whole bunch of Canadian celebrities (and Ben handling some of the vocals/acoustic guitar), so that's in here... and I took the opportunity to force some tracks from Big Sugar's 20+ year old 'Alkaline' dub project on you. Ben's obviously not playing on these (but his dad is), and I remain -- to this day -- shocked that 'Alkaline' isn't more wildly known. It rules. It's still my favourite Big Sugar-related project to date, although we'll see what the new lineup has in store for the future.
