Today, we're with talking with author, educator, and speaker, Jasmine L. Holmes about how shame compounds, the "gospel" of shame, and how resentment and grief shape our souls. Shame has been a dominant theme in our cultural conversation for decades, but today, Jasmine is bringing a fresh take to the table. About shame, she said "Sometimes shame is hoisted on our shoulders in one big traumatic event, like a big boulder. HOLIDAY ENCORE: Dharius Daniels on Emotional Intelligence, Living Outside Your Identity, and the Misguided Pursuit of "Your Best Self"
This week, author and pastor Dharius Daniels is here to talk about emotional intelligence and the misguided pursuit of "your best self." Dharius has been poking a box called "You do you. Be true to yourself. Speak your truth. Become your best self." But as we look at culture that is embracing that message, despair, anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation is rampant. We'll unpack the disconnect with Dharius today, along with a discussion about identity and significance. Dharius says, "God will not honor the direction of our lives when we are living outside of our unique identity." In other words, God will not bless who we pretend to be. That's coming up in today's featured conversation. A few months ago, I found the research and work of Dr. Casey Halpern, who is the Professor of Neurosurgery at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Halpern's research and clinical practice focus on using deep brain stimulation to treat compulsive and movement disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, eating disorders, as well as other neurologic conditions. My goal in speaking with Dr. Halpern was to understand the roots of compulsive behaviors and how they are related to anxiety and trauma, and my hope is that after listening, you'll receive greater education about this very relevant subject. 318: Tyler Staton on Where Prayer Becomes Real and Reviving Prayer in a Culture Where Everyone's Just "Spiritual"
This week, Tyler Staton joins us to talk about reviving a culture of prayer in a post-Christian world. Prayer is the source of Jesus's most astonishing miracles and the subject of Jesus's most audacious promises, and yet, most people--even most Bible-believing Christians--find prayer to be boring, obligatory, disappointing, confusing, or, most often, all of the above. If you've ever felt this way, today's conversation is hopefully going to turn your conceptions around. 317: Toni Collier on Healing from Trauma, EMDR, Dumping "Christian Buddhism," and Why You Can't Heal Yourself By Yourself
This week on the podcast, author and popular speaker, Toni Collier joins us to talk about healing from trauma, EMDR, dumping spirituality and "Christian Buddhism," and why you can't heal yourself by yourself. After a lifetime of childhood trauma, navigating a toxic marriage and divorce, an unhealthy church, becoming a single parent and feeling betrayed, Toni felt shame-filled and used. Because of her brokenness, she believed she was unworthy and unqualified to have a life of meaning and purpose. Many of us have felt the same thing if we're honest. So, in today's conversation, we'll unpack the truth that leads to freedom.
