But if you don’t and have not listened to part one of my conversation with Maggie, please go back and listen, or you’ll be quite lost in this episode. The true-crime community and the families of the victims have renewed hope this case will be solved. Because for the first time in a long time, a press conference was held to show off new evidence in relation to the case. The Suffolk County police released pictures of a belt that was found at one of the crime scenes. The reason why this could be a significant piece of evidence is the belt had the initials “WH” or “HW” painted on. They said the belt had been in their possession for more than a decade after it was found with one of the bodies.Since it didn't belong to any of the victims the police said they were confident the belt was “handled” by the killer. They did not say how they can be so sure so we are left to speculate until we hear more.A picture of the belt was released and the picture is up on the sloburnmedia.com website.Police don’t seem to like to use the phrase cold case anymore but this case was cold. There had not been any new information in years, other than the lawsuits you heard about in the trailer. But I will admit this time feels like they are giving a full pressure push to solve the case. They went as far as creating a new website, gilgonews.com so the public can submit information or tips. The first set of remains was discovered in 20-10 while police were searching for another woman, 24-year-old Shannan Gilbert. It when Gilbert's body wouldn’t be found for another year, across the way on Oak Beach. The total number of bodies discovered during their searches was now 11.In a rather callous way of explaining the deaths, police said at the time, since most of the women worked in prostitution it was basically the job that killed them. The first autopsy on Gilbert concluded she had died from drowning and drug overdose. Despite the fact only being 18 inches of water. The family brought in Dr. Michael Boden to perform an independent autopsy on Gilbert's body. He determined she was killed due to homicidal strangulation because the hyoid bone was missing. The autopsy also showed that Shanna she did not die from a drug overdose or drowning. The family of Shannan Gilbert fought the police for more information about their daughter’s death but were seemingly stonewalled by the Suffolk County Police. The family hired the charismatic attorney John Ray to represent anything to do with Shannan. He was always suing somebody to get more information. One crazy thing to note is Mari Gilbert, Shannan’s mom, was murdered by her youngest daughter.Just a tragic set of circumstances for a family already torn apart due to a murder.Apparently, Gilbert had a 21-minute conversation or call with a 9-1-1 dispatcher and the family attorney sued for the release of the tapes. While police looked for Shannan the found four bodies that had obviously been dumped there. As Maggie said in Part One, the demographics of the area are very wide-ranging and the terrain is mostly barren. true-crimePolice found more bodies on Gilgo Beach, which is on the... Hello and welcome… to EPISODE 52 and part 3 of WHO KILLED the Yogurt Shop 4?Thank you to this week's sponsor, Podcorn. They make connecting podcasters with advertisers a breeze. Click HERE for more details on the packages they offer.PURCHASE WHO KILLED THESE GIRLS? BY BEVERLY LOWRYHelp Support Independent Journalism HereI am your host Bill Huffman and on this week’s show, I will begin the arduous task of covering an infamous case out of Austin, Texas, the yogurt shop murders. This case has been covered by the likes of 48 hours, ID Channel, Inside Edition and a plethora of podcasts. The reason I wanted to take a look at this case is I just finished Beverly Lowry’s book, Who Killed these girls? and it reinvigorated my interest in the case. I will do my best to do it justice and next week I may even have a special guest to discuss the case.Let’s get this week’s episode rolling, Who Killed the Yogurt Shop 4?December 6, 1991, started off like most days in Austin, Texas for Sarah and Jennifer Harbison. They got ready for school, packed their book bags and headed off for the day. It was an overcast day for the city, with temperatures maxing out around 72; a cool Texas Friday. Austin, Texas in 1991 was just coming into its own as a nationally known place where creativity can thrive. Not only is Austin, the capital of Texas, but it also holds the title of Live Music Capital of the World. In 1994, the city created the Austin Film Festival and filmmakers and actors such as Mike Judge, Richard Linklater, and Matthew McConaughey call Austin home.In 2002, Austin City Limits was founded and became one of the premier live events in the U-S drawing groups from all over the world to perform.Sarah would be working that’s night shift so her plans were already set. She would be working with Eliza Thomas, another classmate at Lanier high school. For Sarah and Eliza their shift was going to be just like any other Friday night they worked together at the I Can’t Believe it’s Not Yogurt shop. And the shift started exactly that way. This was 1992 and the frozen yogurt fad was still in full swing; with lines at most times. The chain the girls worked for had hundreds of stores in multiple states. Amy Ayers, a friend of the girls, and Jennifer Harbison, Sarah’s little sister came up to the shop to hang out. A normal routine for any teenager who has friends working by themselves. Their place of employment can become an ideal new hangout spot... We’ve all been there. The Statesman put together a timeline of this case and how it unfolded: Reading verbatim from the timeline: Dec. 6, 1991: Austin firefighters respond to a blaze at I Can't Believe It's Yogurt! at 2949 W. Anderson Lane just before midnight. After the fire is extinguished, a search reveals the bodies of Jennifer Harbison, 17; her 15-year-old sister, Sarah; Eliza Thomas, 17; and Amy Ayers, 13. Dec. 8, 1991: Travis County Medical Examiner Robert Bayardo releases autopsy reports stating each of the four girls had been shot in the head. Police say they have no suspects. Dec. 9, 1991: Police discover evidence that they say leads them to believe more than one person was involved in the killings. Dec. 10, 1991: About 1,500 people attend the victims' funeral Mass at St. Louis Catholic Church. Dec. 12, 1991: Travis County District Judge Jon Wisser seals autopsy reports on the victims at the request of the Travis County district attorney's office. Dec. 17, 1991: Police release possible psychological profiles of the killers. Dec. 31, 1991: The victims' parents plead for additional help from the community during a news conference. Gov. Ann Richards releases a written statement asking for community assistance. Jan. 3, 1992: The Austin Police Department, along with local, county and federal authorities, form a task force to solve the case. Jan. 6, 1992 Police release additional information about the possible murderers. Twelve billboards display images of the slain teenagers. Feb. 26, 1992: Police arrest Laura... As the firemen moved into the building to finish extinguishing the hot spots, and any other little fires only to find something… I am sure they wish they could all forget. In the back of the store, near the exit they found bodies piled on one another. As the medical examiners were called in the grief the first responders were going through was clear. It was also obvious something horrible had occurred as the firefighters emerged dazed and confused. One veteran police officer said he was stunned by the senseless killings of four teenage girls, all of whom were shot twice in the back of the head in a yogurt shop that was then set afire. My Passion Case: Maggie Freleng- The Long Island Serial Killer

E

Part 1 of 2If you have any information regarding the Gilgo Beach Murders, tips can be sent to gilgonews.com.If you'd like to support the show, you can do so via the Venmo app with my username @bill-huffman-3 or via PayPal.All true-crime aficionados know about the Gilgo Beach Murders and mysterious Long Island Serial Killer.Just this past Thursday authorities held a news conference to show off new evidence in relation to the investigation. The Suffolk County police on Long Island released photos of what it said could be a significant piece of evidence: a black leather belt with the letters "WH" or "HM" found at the scene a decade ago.The authorities said they are confident the belt was handled by the killer because it didn't belong to any of the victims. They released a photograph of the belt and I will put the picture on the website. This is very interesting news since the case has been kind of cold for the past few years.Police must think there is a new opportunity to catch the killer because they also launched a new website gilgonews.com to collect new tips and information about the case. The first set of remains was discovered in 20-10 while police were searching for another woman, 24-year-old Shannan Gilbert. It wouldn't be for another year when Gilbert's body would be found across the way on neighboring Oak Beach.Once Gilbert's body was recovered the total number of bodies found was 11.Police said most of the women found worked in prostitution and advertised on such services as Craigslist. When an independent autopsy was performed on Gilbert's body, they were able to determine she was killed due to homicidal strangulation. The reason for the second autopsy was the first one concluded Gilbert had died from drowning and drug overdose. The autopsy was able to conclude she did not die from a natural disease, drug overdose or drowning.Gilbert had vanished after visiting a customer and was told to have freaked out and started banging on neighbor's doors asking for help and saying people were trying to kill her. While searching for Gilbert, police found four bodies in various stages of decomposition.More remains were uncovered on Gilgo Beach, which is roughly 40 miles from New York City. The FBI didn't join the task force until 20-15, so this new evidence may be a result of their participation. Now that I've run you through the basics of the case, let's join my conversation with producer and star in the true-crime community, Maggie Freleng to take a deeper dive into the Long Island Serial Killer.Unfortunately, this case is too big to cover in one episode so tune in next week for part two. Meanwhile, thank you so much again to Maggie from Missing Maura Murray, NPR, Crawlspace, and everything true crime.Press Conference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=he5GFvBPt7gAnd thank you for tuning in to my new show. Wondery Introduces The Sneak

E

Wondery and USA Today introduces The Sneak In the Fall of 2008, a sleepy Seattle suburb was shocked by a crime that no one expected. A local football star planned a daring bank robbery - complete with decoys, disguises, and an outlandish getaway plan. He drew the whole thing up just like a game-winning play on the field - and almost got away with it. The Sneak follows the twisting story of a once-great athlete who committed that crime, and how the robbery forever changed the small town where it occurred. You are about to hear a preview of The Sneak from Wondery and USA Today. As you listen, be sure to subscribe to The Sneak on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you are listening right now. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-sneak/id1487746571https://wondery.com/shows/the-sneak/ Learn more about your ad choices. Wondery Introduces Detective Trapp

E

Anaheim investigator Julissa Trapp is not like other detectives. She’s the only woman on the homicide squad, and a skilled chameleon: an undercover cop in vice stings, crime-scene commander, the patient confidante of killers. A master interrogator, she invokes her personal experience – and deepest grief -- as a tool to elicit confessions. When a young woman’s body is found at a trash-sorting plant, Trapp learns the murder may be linked to the disappearance of three other women in nearby Santa Ana. Trapp embarks on a dark journey that brings her face to face with a man who takes “a little piece of her soul.” Listen now at Wondery.fm/TrappWhoKilled Learn more about your ad choices. I am talking about Amy’s father, Mark Mihaljevic. At the beginning of this nightmare, Margaret Mihaljevic, Amy’s mother was the face of the case. She was all over television and the newspapers.Unfortunately, Margaret had some health issues and passed away nearly 20 years ago.Ever since the person carrying the torch for Amy is her father Mark.I have spoken with him before and you can tell this has been extremely hard on him since he isn’t as gregarious as Margaret was.I’d say Mark has set his shyness aside and is now in the role Margaret once held.Mark worked for Buick as a sales representative when Amy was abducted. He is originally from Wisconsin and has lived in the Cleveland area for 35 years. He has taken time out of his day and after a week of constant anniversary interviews, I feel lucky to have the chance to speak with Mark.So let's jump into my conversation with Mark Mihaljevic. It has been just over a year since I published the first episode of Who Killed Amy Mihaljevic? It has gone the way I had thought it would if I did it right of course. I must have done something right because there have been over 1-million downloads, 100 new tips, an Investigation Discovery Channel Documentary, an appearance at CrimeCon in New Orleans and several media stories. The podcast has allowed me to rejoin the journalism world and have made some great friendships along the way. October 27th will mark 30 years that Amy’s Case has remained unsolved. October 27, 1989, started like any other for Amy Mihaljevic. She packed her backpack, kissed her mom goodbye, hopped on her blue bike and rode off to school. Two things made this day different though; one Amy was carrying a secret and two, she never came home. It was a warm day for Northeast Ohio in October, with temperatures in the 70’s. Having grown up in the suburb next to Bay Village, I understand how normal and common it is to ride your bike to school...especially if the weather allows it this late in the fall. Amy had told her mom and dad that she had a choir tryout after school and would be late. Neither parents questioned Amy’s story, she had never lied to them before, why would she lie about this. Margaret had just started being a full-time employee and Mark heading to Cincinnati for a work meeting and they probably just assumed everything was on the up and up. Amy’s brother Jason, who was a year ahead of Amy, did not notice anything unusual. As Amy pedaled away that Friday morning nobody in the Mihaljevic family knew how much their life would change in less than 10 hours. A normal day became anything but when Amy didn’t come home from school. The last time Amy spoke with her mother was when she called to check in after school. There have been some reports saying that Amy sounded a bit distant but we are taking that from Margaret and she was not in a state where she could think clearly. There have been many stories about family members being in a daze those first few days after a tragedy. With Amy being abducted on a Friday it was a time where most families were heading to football games or planning the weekend's activities. The FBI’s Reactive squad was called after Margaret went to the police station and explained the situation. Sensing that this was more than just a girl going to a friend's house the alarm was sounded immediately. Add Clip- we got the newsAmy’s Case was easy for the local media to get behind because she was a young white girl from an upper middle-class family. There have been plenty of examples of people of color not being given the same treatment and since this was 1989 the media did not do much self-reflection. Either way, the story caught fire locally when it was learned that Amy’s abduction wasn’t random and had been part of a ruse. Two of Amy’s classmates went to the police and told them that Amy said she had been planning on meeting a man who she said worked with her mother. With hindsight being 20/20 we can now question how credible those sources could have been. Hear me out...The two witnesses were Amy’s age. They did not know Amy well enough to know who her father was because one of the witnesses thought it might have been her father. Once they saw and heard the news about Amy’s abduction they had to tell the police. Phil Torsney was a special agent for... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Who Killed Molly Bish?

E

n June 27th, 2000, sixteen-year-old lifeguard Molly Bish disappeared from her lifeguard post at Comins Pond in Warren, MA. On the day before Molly's disappearance, her mother, Magi Bish, noticed a mustached Caucasian male in a white sedan in the parking lot at the pond. Though he appeared suspicious, Magi brushed it off and dropped Molly off. Molly had only been in her position as a lifeguard for a week, when her mother dropped her off at Comins Pond on June 27th. Magi received the call from police no parent wants to get. They inform her that no lifeguard was on duty at the pond so she quickly returned to Molly's post, only to discover, was her sandals and her lunch. This is a safe community. According to the city’s website, Warren is a rural town of 5000 people located in western Worcester (Wooster) County and is bisected by the Quaboag River. At 9:50 am Molly and her mom stopped at the local convenience store to grab some water bottles.Afterward, they drove to the police station to pick up the required two-way radio. As there were no telephones or communications at Comins Pond, the radio was the only way the lifeguards could contact police or anyone outside of the area.Anyone with information regarding this week's case, the death of 16-year-old Molly Anne Bish, you can also contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI. Who Killed David Widlak?

E

Who Killed David Widlak?Victim: David WidlakCEO of the Community Central Bank Corporation and Community Bank62 years old at the time of deathSunday, September 19: David Widlak disappeared from his bank. He left on foot and his car was discovered the next day in the parking lot around 7:00 the following morning by a maintenance worker. When this maintenance worker went to Widlak’s office he found it trashed.October 17: Duck hunters discovered a body, which was later determined to be Widlak, in the marshland of Lake St. Clair, outside of Detroit. His body was floating in about 1 foot of water. This was less than 5 miles from the bank. David was still wearing the clothing he was last reported wearing and he still had his phone, keys, and wallet. October 20: Widlak’s gun was discovered just a few feet from where his body was. His hat was also found, but deep in the woods. From the beginning, the police were treating this as a disappearance/suicide.There was a discrepancy between the initial autopsy conducted by Macomb County medical examiner Daniel Spitz and the most recent one performed by Oakland County doctor L.J. Dragovic in 2010. Spitz who conducted the first autopsy had determined the cause of death to be undetermined. He stated he found no obvious wounds, and no blunt force trauma and proceeded to state he may have drowned. A second autopsy was done by Dragovic (hired by the Widlak family) and the cause of death was determined to have been an “execution-style” gunshot wound in the mid-back of Widlak’s neck.Anyone with tips, please call: 1-800-CALL-FBIIf you know anybody or are dealing with suicidal thoughts, there is help:National Suicide Prevention Lifeline Call 1-800-273-8255 Sources: Detroit Free Press, Mlive.com Learn more about your ad choices. Who Killed Shakira Johnson?

E

You can help support the show by donating via the Venmo app with my username@billhuffman3 or thru clicking in this Pay Pal link or with my email [email protected]. Thank you! Your support helps keep this platform alive to continue talking about the stories which don't receive the attention they deserve. In September 2003 I was a student at Cleveland State University. I had just started an internship with the news radio station in Cleveland WTAM. The media and the Internet put a lot of pressure on the police to find this missing girl and the question was raised about why an Amber Alert had not been issued.I learned the business from Levon Putney, now of WCBS New York, about how to cover such a sensitive story. Shakira’s case happened during my first two weeks of interning at WTAM 1100 in Cleveland. It was common for us to attend press conferences, interview family members and on more than one occasion we interviewed Commander of the fourth district police, Michael McGrath. It was a front-row seat to one of Cleveland’s saddest times. It was an eye-opener too for a kid from the suburbs. I realized quickly that there were certain stories you had to approach differently.Shakira's abduction and disappearance were heavily covered through each step of the investigation. The plain dealer stated at the time the investigators worked under the “harsh spotlight of media attention.”While Putney and I were hitting the pavement there was a whole other investigation-taking place. An amber alert is something we have become accustomed to since it was first introduced in 1996. The radio or television is interrupted and a description of the missing child is relayed to the audience. For one reason or another, there was no such alert when Shakira Johnson went missing. The authorities like to say that the criteria weren’t met in her case and therefore no alert was issued. However, only two weeks after she went missing another girl on the east side of Cleveland disappeared, and an Amber Alert was issued in her case. You may say ah…they learned their lesson… but let's not forget Shakira was still missing. No one knows what would have happened if Shakira would have been treated the same way as Amanda Mulliken-White.In a city where race has always been an issue, the fact the police issued an Amber Alert for a white girl from Cleveland Heights, only created more divide.Sources: Cleveland.com Learn more about your ad choices. Who Killed the Robison Family?

Who Killed...? began as a series to bring attention to the Amy Mihaljevic case. Her family and the community deserve answers to who abducted the killed 10-year-old on October 27th, 1989. During the research, it was clear there are a lot of families who need answers so the podcast has evolved into taking a deep dive into the details of other cases.Hopefully, by providing a voice for the voiceless will help lead to some resolution for all the parties involved in these tragedies. We all deserve answers to the cases that have flummoxed us forever and I hope Who Killed...? will help shine a light on cases that may have been forgotten over time.Cover Art by Bill HuffmanWho Killed...? Alison Parrott disappeared near Varsity Stadium in downtown Toronto in 1986.She was supposedly meeting with a photographer. It was 6:30 p.m.—four hours since Alison should have returned home. After Alison didn’t return home and her mom called the police.A massive search began two hours later involving 150 police officers and 24 friends and neighbors of Lesley Parrott and her husband, Peter, an engineer. They spent the hot, rainy evening looking through the stadium, then vacant lots, alleys and ravines. The search was covered heavily by television and radio.Alison’s mother would appeal for her daughter’s return, throughout the weekend.SOTTwo days after Alison’s disappearance, two boysdiscovered Her body in a west-end park.Lesley Parrott said Alison regularly used the subway. After the discovery, Police sealed off the area and assigned 60 officers to search all the garbage collected in the subway system since July 25 for clues.Alison’s killing took a toll on the city much like Amy’s killing has continued to loom over Bay Village. The way both girls were stalked is another reason these killings still resonate today. As mentioned in Part One, Alison was a runner. Albeit a newbie to the sport she had talent. She won the first race she entered and the local papers covered her accomplishment.Police at the time believed that Alison’s killer was probably aware of her running and that’s when he began to stalk her. With little evidence at the time, police offered a reward of $50,000 to help track the killer.DNA technology didn’t exist in 1986 but they were able to collect fluids from Alison’s body.A 1986 article they reference the technology being used at the time. It’s interesting because we’re so used to DNA today but this is what they said “, and investigators even used a laser beam to scan the girl’s body for fingerprints, hairs or other traces that might identify the abductor.”One suspect that was interviewed in 1986 was Carl Francis Roy.He was a runner and lived near AlisonThey didn’t have anything at the time to connect him to the body. That changed in 1993 when scientists began using advanced DNA technology. In 1996, the fluids they found on Alison were tested. The test was able to prove once and for all that Francis Carl Roy was indeed the killer. After stalking Roy’s movements for days the police found what they were looking for, a discarded cigarette butt with Roy’s DNA.Dr. Wayne Murray describes what can be found “SOT- Dr. Wayne MurrayAlmost ten years after Alison’s murder Roy was arrested. The strongest piece of evidence against Roy was DNA found in the girl's body that matched Roy's.This is where things start to get a little bit too graphic and I will do my best to minimize his ridiculous defense.Roy's lawyer tried to raise the possibility that police charged the wrong man. This is where the defense jumps the shark. Roy's explanation for the DNA was that he discovered Alison's naked body in a park, and then molested her.Roy's lawyer told the jury “what Roy did was “admittedly vile and disgusting”, he wasn't a murderer.SOT – Defense lawyerThe jury deliberated for six days before returning its verdict. It took five days for the jury to reach a verdict. The jury wasn’t told that Roy had twice been convicted of rape or that both victims were teenagers.Another item the jury was was unaware of is that one of his previous victims was tricked, abducted and bound, much like Alison. Francis Roy was found guilty of the first-degree murder of 11-year-old Alison Parrott.Roy, 41, faces an automatic life sentence with no parole eligibility for 25 years.Alison's mother, Lesley Party met with...
