It appears to be someone’s personal website. But memorable domain names can be worth a million dollars or more. So, why is someone using this valuable internet real estate to post their resume and favorite recipes? Back in the internet’s early days, it was easy to get a domain name. They were cheap or even free. The first people to grab them may now be holding onto assets that can sell for millions of dollars. These potential profits have attracted a unique breed of investor who buys and sells domain names, gambling on the value of everyday words. On our latest show: What is a domain really worth? And we ask the owner of milk.com why he’s not selling — and if there’s a price that might change his mind.Planet Money is writing a book! How Sol Price invented the warehouse club and a philosophy that still runs Costco and Amazon. Have you ever wondered why you can still buy a hot dog and soda for $1.50 today at Costco? We can thank Sol Price for that. To him, keeping promises to customers mattered more than profit margins. Sam Walton said he borrowed more ideas from Sol Price than anyone else. Jim Sinegal of Costco said, “I didn’t learn a lot from Sol. I learned everything.” Jeff Bezos studied him. Home Depot echoed him. He invented the warehouse club, pioneered membership retail and built two multi-billion-dollar companies. The real lessons aren’t about what he built, but how he did it. This is the story of how a lawyer with no retail experience created an industry, mentored his competition, and proved that nice guys don't always finish last. Sol Price founded FedMart and Price Club, pioneering the membership warehouse model that inspired Costco and Sam’s Club. His principles—limited selection, fair wages, capped markups, no loss leaders—shaped modern retail through disciples like Jim Sinegal (Costco), Sam Walton (Walmart/Sam’s Club), Bernie Marcus (Home Depot), and influenced Jeff Bezos (Prime). ------ Approximate Timestamps: (00:00) Introduction (02:01) Early Years (08:29) Starting FedMart (28:33) Price Club (36:19) When Students Surpass the Teacher (42:09) The Teacher's Last Lesson (43:46) Reflections And Lessons ------ Upgrade: Get a hand edited transcripts and ad free experiences along with my thoughts and reflections at the end of every conversation. Derek gives us unique perspectives on wealth and success. He has a cool and unique background as a musician, successful entrepreneur, and happy minimalist. Episode 142: Author and entrepreneur, Derek Sivers describes his approach to living wealthy and happily whether earning a little or a lot. Guest Biography Derek Sivers is an American writer, musician, programmer and entrepreneur best known for being the founder and former president of CD Baby. More than anything, he wants to make lots of stuff. Derek enjoys working alone for 12 hours a day/6 days a week in his pursuit of making articles, books, websites, music, companies, systems, apps, and especially new ideas. He is known for saying no to almost everything so he can have lots of time for making. At the age of 14, Derek decided to be a successful musician. He was single-focused obsessed on this from the age of 14 to 29, waking up early to practice, staying up late to write, saying no to all distractions, and reading whatever he could to improve. At age 29, Derek "accidentally" started the company CD Baby that helped his musician friends sell CDs online which eventually became the largest seller of independent music on the Internet. In 2008, he sold the company; and as 100 percent owner, he utilized a strategy to donate the proceeds of $22 million to charity. Derek continues to learn lots of stuff, especially different approaches to thinking and living. He finds inspiration in reading non-fiction, living in many places around the world, and cutting out most things that most normal people do — like hanging out, watching TV, and partying. His writing, thoughts, and book notes can be found at www.sivers.org. In this episode, you'll learn: The difference between living a highly focused life vs making time to ponder and think. Interesting thoughts on money, wealth, and defining what's enough. Great book recommendations on the topic of money. Google Part II: Alphabet
FullPodcast: Acquired (LS 71 · TOP 0.05% what is this?)Episode: Google Part II: AlphabetPub date: 2025-08-26Get Podcast Transcript →powered by Listen411 - fast audio-to-text and summarizationIn its first six years from 1998 to 2004, Google built one of the greatest products of all time (and certainly the greatest business of all time) with Search. Then in its next six years from 2005 to 2011, Google built seven (!) more billion+ user products: Gmail, Maps, Drive and Docs, YouTube, Chrome, Android, and Photos — all either started from scratch internally or acquired as startups that were still in their infancy. This six-year period of wild innovation STILL stands unmatched in technology history… no other tech company counts more than four billion+ user products in its portfolio total. And of course, this “Google 2.0” era culminated in the transformation of the very company itself into Alphabet. So the question we answer today is… how did they do it?? And why? What was the strategy that led a once “pure play” search company into such far flung fields as email, mapping, funny cat videos and operating systems? We unpack the brilliant (and sometimes accidental) strategies behind each product, the simultaneous three-front war Google fought against Microsoft, Apple, and Facebook, and the spectacular failure of Google Plus that nearly destroyed the company's culture — before ultimately setting the stage for both Alphabet and the AI revolution to come.Update: when you finish, check out our Google Part III episode, "The AI Company"!Sponsors:WorkOS: https://bit.ly/workos25Sierra: https://bit.ly/acquiredsierraSentry: https://bit.ly/acquiredsentryAnthropic: https://bit.ly/acquiredclaude25Links:Sign up for email updates and vote on Fall Season episodes!Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat New Yorker articleEric Schmidt on stage at the iPhone keynote (!)Bill Gurley’s classic “Less than Free” Android postOur recent ACQ2 episode with Bret Taylor and Clay BavorWorldly Partners’ Multi-Decade Alphabet StudyEpisode sourcesCarve Outs:Bluey x Camp in NYCSteam Deck vs Switch 2 (Part 2)ClaudeSony RX100 VIICarissimi clothingMore Acquired!Get email updates with hints on next episode and follow-ups from recent episodesJoin the SlackSubscribe to ACQ2Merch Store!© Copyright 2015-2025 ACQ, LLCNote: Acquired hosts and guests may hold assets discussed in this episode. Costco
FullPodcast: Acquired (LS 71 · TOP 0.05% what is this?)Episode: CostcoPub date: 2026-01-02Get Podcast Transcript →powered by Listen411 - fast audio-to-text and summarizationCostco is not only Charlie Munger’s favorite company of all time (plus he’s on the board, natch), it’s an absolutely fascinating study in how seemingly opposite characteristics can combine to create incredible company value. For instance: Costco has the cheapest prices of any major retailer in America — and also the wealthiest customer base. They pay their hourly workers 30% above the industry norm (and give them excellent healthcare + 401k benefits) — and are almost 3x more profitable on labor than Walmart. Speaking of Walmart, Costco stocks 40x fewer SKUs than their Bentonville-based rivals — yet sells an average of 15x more volume of each. And oh yeah, practically all of Costco’s C-Suite started their careers as baggers and checkout clerks! The Inevitability of Centrality
FullPodcast: PING (LS 27 · TOP 10% what is this?)Episode: The Inevitability of CentralityPub date: 2025-08-20Get Podcast Transcript →powered by Listen411 - fast audio-to-text and summarizationIn this episode of PING, APNIC’s Chief Scientist, Geoff Huston, discusses the economic inevitability of centrality, in the modern Internet. Despite our best intentions, and a lot of long standing belief amongst the IETF technologists, no amount of open standards and end-to-end protocol design prevents large players at all levels of the network (from the physical infrastructure right up to the applications and the data centres which house them) from seeking to acquire smaller competitors, and avoid sharing the space with anyone else. Some of this is a consequence of the drive for efficiency. A part has been fuelled by the effects of Moore’s law, and the cost of capital investment against the time available to recover the costs. In an unexpected outcome, networking has become (to all intents and purposes) “free” and instead of end-to-end, we now routinely expect to get data through highly localised, replicated sources. The main cost these days is land, electric power and air-conditioning. This causes a tendency to concentration, and networks and protocols play very little part in the decision about who acquires these assets, and operates them. The network still exists of course, but increasingly data flows over private links, and is not subject to open protocol design imperatives.A quote from Peter Thiel highlights how the modern Venture Capitalist in our space does not actively seek to operate in a competitive market. As Peter says: “competition is for losers” – It can be hard to avoid the “good” and “bad” labels talking about this, but Geoff is clear he isn’t here to argue what is right or wrong, simply to observe the behaviour and the consequences.Geoff presented on centrality to the Decentralised Internet Research Group or DINRG at the recent IETF meeting held in Madrid, and as he observes, “distributed” is not the same as “decentralised” -we’ve managed to achieve the first one, but the second eludes us.Read more about the policy issues of the modern Internet at the apnic labs blog, the DINRG (IETF) and APNIC BlogDecentralizing Services? He breaks down the complex web of legacy systems, tiered support structures, and regulatory constraints that create Kafka-esque experiences for bank customers. Using the lens of institutional legibility borrowed from "Seeing Like a State," Patrick explains how banks' technical architecture and organizational design choices—from core processing systems to customer service tiers—systematically generate the dysfunction that customers experience when things go wrong.–Full transcript available here: www.complexsystemspodcast.com/how-banks-actually-work/–Recommended in this episode:Patrick’s Bits about Money essay, Seeing like a bank: https://www.bitsaboutmoney.com/archive/seeing-like-a-bank/–Timestamps:(00:00) Intro(03:52) Recordkeeping systems(10:20) Sponsor: Safebase(11:50) Human accountability and its malcontents(22:57) Two embedded surprises about bank staffing(27:47) Society has goals which conflict with banks being good at banking(30:52) So what can be done about this? The podcast and artwork embedded on this page are from Patrick McKenzie, which is the property of its owner and not affiliated with or endorsed by Listen Notes, Inc.

Today, we are breaking down the real estate broker Compass. Compass itself is a fascinating business and historically a controversial stock. It was founded in 2012 by Robert Reffkin and has scaled in that short period of time to become the largest real estate brokerage in the United States. Geoff Collette, founder of Aeon Capital Partners, is back as a guest. After his Breakdown on Goosehead, we thought it was fitting to cover another flavor of broker. Geoff and I cover the history, some of Compass’s early pivots, and the different critiques of the company. There is a ton of interesting stuff around Compass today. We could see a broker potentially emerge from being historically a commodity business to something more powerful. Please enjoy this Breakdown of Compass. 3345: Veeva Systems and the Future of Agentic AI in Pharma
FullPodcast: Tech Talks Daily (LS 48 · TOP 0.5% what is this?)Episode: 3345: Veeva Systems and the Future of Agentic AI in PharmaPub date: 2025-07-13Get Podcast Transcript →powered by Listen411 - fast audio-to-text and summarizationAI is racing ahead, but for industries like life sciences, the stakes are higher and the rules more complex. In this episode, recorded just before the July heatwave hit its peak, I spoke with Chris Moore, President of Europe at Veeva Systems, from his impressively climate-controlled garden office. We covered everything from the trajectory of agentic AI to the practicalities of embedding intelligence in highly regulated pharma workflows, and how Veeva is quietly but confidently positioning itself to deliver where others are still making announcements. Chris brings a unique perspective shaped by a career that spans ICI Pharmaceuticals, PwC, IBM, and EY. That journey taught him how often the industry is forced to rebuild the same tech infrastructure again and again until Veeva came along. He shares how Veeva's decision to build a life sciences-specific cloud platform from the ground up has enabled a deeper, more compliant integration of AI. We explored what makes Veeva AI different, from the CRM bot that handles compliant free text to MLR agents that support content review and approval. Chris explains how Veeva's AI agents inherit the context and controls of their applications, making them far more than chat wrappers or automation tools. They are embedded directly into workflows, helping companies stay compliant while reducing friction and saving time. And perhaps more importantly, he makes a strong case for why the EU AI Act isn't a barrier. It's a validation. From auto-summarising regulatory documents to pulling metadata from health authority correspondence, the real-world examples Chris offers show how Veeva AI will reduce repetitive work while ensuring integrity at every step. He also shares how Veeva is preparing for a future where companies may want to bring their LLMs or even run different ones by geography or task. Their flexible, harness-based approach is designed to support exactly that. Looking ahead to the product's first release in December, Chris outlines how Veeva is working hand-in-hand with customers to ensure readiness and reliability from day one. We also touch on the broader mission: using AI not as a shiny add-on, but as a tool to accelerate drug development, reach patients faster, and relieve the pressure on already overstretched specialist teams. Chris closes with a dose of humanity, offering a book and song that both reflect Veeva's mindset, embracing disruption while staying grounded. This one is for anyone curious about how real, applied AI is unfolding inside one of the world's most important sectors, and what it means for the future of medicine. The podcast and artwork embedded on this page are from Neil C. He has a net worth of $10+ million with most of it in his business. He reflects on the challenges and rewards of running a business, the significance of cash management, and the lessons learned from navigating investments in various countries. Adam emphasizes the value of experiences over material possessions and the importance of surrounding oneself with positive influences. He concludes with insights on entrepreneurship and the realities of growth in business. Takeaways Adam has lived overseas for 14 years, gaining a unique perspective on wealth. He focuses on helping expats and high-net-worth individuals with investments and wealth protection. His net worth is in the eight-figure range, primarily in company valuations and liquid assets. Adam prefers liquid assets over real estate due to tax disadvantages abroad. He believes cash should be seen as an opportunity for acquisitions rather than a long-term hold. Having cash on hand is crucial for business owners to seize unexpected opportunities. Investment strategies should adapt to changing economic conditions and personal circumstances. Travel and experiences provide lasting value compared to material possessions. Surrounding oneself with positive influences is essential for personal and professional growth. Entrepreneurship often requires patience and resilience, with success not always being linear.
