You may remember the episodes we did with Mary at the time, as well as business and other leaders in the state. But we also had the chance to sit in with Mary while she talked with her contacts on the ground. On this special episode, you'll hear some of those discussions and get a sense of exactly what happens when a regional Fed president goes out and learns from the community. You'll hear from officials at the Port of Anchorage dealing with the new trade landscape, a company that makes steel tubing for the oil industry coming to grips with tariffs, and from managers involved at the airport, to get a sense of how the Alaskan economy works and the distinct pressures they're facing right now.Only Bloomberg.com subscribers can get the Odd Lots newsletter in their inbox — now delivered every weekday — plus unlimited access to the site and app. Subscribe at bloomberg.com/subscriptions/oddlotsSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. The podcast and artwork embedded on this page are from Bloomberg, which is the property of its owner and not affiliated with or endorsed by Listen Notes, Inc.

How Shopify Stays on the Bleeding Edge: AI, Culture, and Operating Like You'll Be Relevant in 20 Years (with Head of Engineering, Farhan Thawar)
FullPodcast: Convergence.fm (LS 31 · TOP 5% what is this?)Episode: How Shopify Stays on the Bleeding Edge: AI, Culture, and Operating Like You'll Be Relevant in 20 Years (with Head of Engineering, Farhan Thawar)Pub date: 2025-10-16Get Podcast Transcript →powered by Listen411 - fast audio-to-text and summarizationIn this episode of Convergence.fm, Ashok Sivanand sits down with Farhan Thawar, Head of Engineering at Shopify, to go behind the scenes of how Shopify not only keeps pace with rapid change but leads it. The discussion explores how Shopify became one of the first platforms to allow merchants to sell products directly inside ChatGPT, why that move challenges Amazon's dominance, and what it takes to build a company that learns faster than it fails. Farhan explains the systems that make being first repeatable rather than accidental, including Shopify's internal LLM proxy, MCP servers, experimentation culture, and democratized tooling. If you are a CEO, COO, or CTO looking to scale through culture, systems, and intentional technology adoption, this episode shows what it looks like to operate with conviction and long-term relevance. Key Topics and Moments: Shopify and OpenAI's commerce integration. The same day OpenAI enabled in-chat shopping, Shopify merchants were already live. Farhan explains what it takes for a company of Shopify's size to move with that kind of speed Competing with Amazon through culture, not size. Shopify has 3,000 engineers compared to Amazon's 35,000+, yet continues to outpace bigger players by focusing on coherence, focus, and empowered execution rather than bureaucracy and scale. The meaning behind Tobi Lütke's April AI memo. Farhan discusses how Shopify operationalized its "AI is non-optional" stance, what baseline expectations look like, and how performance is evaluated in an AI-native organization. AI reflexivity and the "three buckets." Farhan explains how teams are taught to recognize "AI not allowed," "AI optional," and "AI mandatory" problems so that employees develop instinct for when to reach for AI — and when to pick up the screwdriver. The risk of 'vibe coding' and why hand tools still matter. Farhan shares lessons from real incidents inside and outside Shopify, like the Cloudflare outage caused by unreviewed AI-generated code, and how engineering leaders teach judgment, not just prompting. The LLM Proxy and MCP Servers. Inside look at how Shopify democratized AI across departments by building an internal platform that connects all major models and corporate data sources, enabling every employee to build workflows and ask intelligent questions — not just engineers. AI budgeting vs. SaaS budgeting. Farhan explains why AI usage isn't treated like traditional SaaS spend and how Shopify encourages heavy experimentation by rewarding impact rather than punishing token consumption. Experimentation as a system. How teams are encouraged to show work at 20%, not 80%, and why the speed of learning, not perfection, is the true productivity metric. Subtraction as leadership. Farhan shares how founders and executives must delete outdated processes, rules, and layers of bureaucracy to make room for new ideas — why process should only exist if it makes something possible or 10x better. Hiring and growing AI-native talent. Why Shopify doubled down on internships, hiring 1,000 interns this year and next, and how younger engineers push full-timers to stay current by being born AI-native "centaurs." Responsibility versus accountability. Why leaders can delegate tasks but not responsibility, and how to stay in the work without disempowering the team. Certainty as intolerance. Farhan's reflection on why overconfidence kills creativity, and how leaders can replace fixed beliefs with wayfinding, curiosity, and adaptive decision-making. Rapid-fire reflections for CEOs. Ashok and Farhan close with lessons on showing unfinished work, modeling curiosity, and removing friction as a cultural operating system. Who Should Listen: Mid-market CEOs, COOs, and CTOs building adaptable organizations that can scale. Leaders focused on culture and transformation, not just technology adoption. Operators who want to apply product thinking and modern software practices to traditional industries. Notable Quotes: "We have a baseline expectation of using AI. If you have two people, one using AI and one not, they will both be evaluated the same." – Farhan Thawar on AI usage expectations "We don't like waste, but we don't have limits. If you believe in your workflow, use the best model for your problem solving." – Farhan Thawar on AI token cost and consumption "You can now buy directly in chat from Shopify merchants. That is a major shift in how people discover and buy online." – Ashok Sivanand on Shopify launching all their merchants on ChatGPT's Shop feature on the very day it was launched Related Reading and References: Shopify Blog: Shopify and OpenAI bring commerce to ChatGPT (official announcement) -

Why the Trump Administration is Now Taking Equity Stakes in American Companies

The Biden administration, via CHIPS and the Inflation Reduction Act, was aggressive about using loans and grants to accelerate US industry. But the Trump administration has been engaged in something more novel: taking direct stakes in US companies like Intel and MP. But what is the legal basis for such action? And what are the advantages and disadvantages of direct equity stakes? On this episode, we speak with Peter Harrell, visiting scholar at the Georgetown Institute of International Economic Law. We discuss the structure of these new arrangements, and the advantages and disadvantages for the government to be a minority shareholder in publicly-traded companies. Dan is a technology analyst and author who spent six years living in China studying its manufacturing ecosystem and tech development, best known for his new book Breakneck. Dan offers the most nuanced framework I've encountered for understanding US-China competition. We explore a critical asymmetry: it's far harder for the US to rebuild manufacturing capacity than for China to improve scientific research, with profound implications for AI, national security, and investment returns. For investors, Dan explains the "ByteDance problem"—why exceptional Chinese companies trade at massive discounts due to Communist Party unpredictability and geopolitical risks. He argues China is a "high agency" society that executes relentlessly while America deliberates endlessly, yet also reveals the societal cost. We discuss innovation, state capacity, and investing across both superpowers. Please enjoy my conversation with Dan Wang. How the US Dollar Became an International Weapon of War

The country immediately was hit with a slew of sanctions. It was cut off from the SWIFT payment system and it even had its dollar reserves seized. Prior to that, in 2021, the US took the rare step of seizing dollar reserves from Afghanistan's central bank after the Taliban's re-emergence to power. So how does the US control who gets to hold and transact in US dollars? Where did this power come from? What are the limits to the US policing of its own currency? On this episode of the podcast, we speak with Bloomberg Senior Reporter Saleha Mohsin, author of the new book, Paper Soldiers: How the Weaponization of the Dollar Changed the World Order. We discuss the buildup of this tremendous financial power and also what it means for the dollar's status as a reserve currency going forward.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. The podcast and artwork embedded on this page are from Bloomberg, which is the property of its owner and not affiliated with or endorsed by Listen Notes, Inc.

How a Trade War With China Could Become a Hot War
FullPodcast: Odd Lots (LS 64 · TOP 0.05% what is this?)Episode: How a Trade War With China Could Become a Hot WarPub date: 2025-07-26Get Podcast Transcript →powered by Listen411 - fast audio-to-text and summarizationTension between the US and China has been building for some time. But so far this has been limited to issues of trade. The US has imposed tariffs on China. It's imposed restrictions on technology exports. In turn, China has imposed some of its own tariffs, and also limited the export of things like rare earth metals. But historically speaking, many hot wars have their roots in some kind of trade-related tensions between nations. So the risk exists that a trade war one day becomes a hot war. So how does this happen, and how can it be avoided? On this episode, we speak with Dale Copeland, a professor of international relations at the University of Virginia. He discusses his theories of trade, and we discuss his most recent book, A World Safe for Commerce: American Foreign Policy From the Revolution to the Rise of China, which specifically discusses the prospect for an outright US-China confrontation. In this episode, recorded in Bloomberg's London studio, Bloomberg Opinion columnist Javier Blas helps us clear up some misconceptions about them. For one thing, rare earths aren't actually that rare. Furthermore, the amount of global trade of these minerals is fairly minuscule. The US only imports $170 million worth in a year. And then beyond that, the most common usage of them is in vacuum cleaners. Still, their economics are interesting and they do have some important applications. In addition, we talk about what the trade war means for the domestic US energy agenda, and the Trump administration's desire to expand total output. Why are interest rates so much higher? Why does it seem virtually unfathomable that the Fed will return to ZIRP anytime soon? Why do investors expect this rate cut cycle to be so shallow? The answer, theoretically, is that the neutral rate of interest has gone up. But what is the neutral rate of interest, and why has it moved? On this episode, we speak with Jamie Rush of Bloomberg Economics and Tom Orlik, the Chief Economist at Bloomberg Economics. They, along with Bloomberg's Stephanie Flanders, are the editors of a new book titled The Price of Money: A Guide to the Past, Present, and Future of the Natural Rate of Interest, in which they attempt to directly identify what the neutral rate of interest actually is. Laptop farms gained popularity in 2020 with the rise in remote work, allowing North Korean workers to evade sanctions, infiltrate American companies, and funnel money directly into North Korea's weapons programs. They hire people, like Christina, to run dozens of computers from their homes using software that allows remote access. She has written for BBC Travel, Fodor’s, Frommer’s, and other major outlets, leading readers off the beaten path across Peru. In this episode, we dig into why Heather believes it’s nearly impossible to hike the Inca Trail ethically, and she offers lesser-known, more respectful alternatives and hidden gems across Peru. This episode may help you become a better traveler and make more informed decisions. Heather explains why the system behind the Inca Trail, from permit quotas to porter treatment, is deeply flawed. We also explore alternative routes that offer just as much beauty with less harm, plus other parts of Peru that travelers often skip entirely. What’s one assumption you hold about a destination you’re planning, and how might you challenge it? I'd love to hear about it, and I hope you’ll share by sending me an audio message. FullPodcast: Acquired (LS 71 · TOP 0.05% what is this?)Episode: Google Part III: The AI CompanyPub date: 2025-10-06Get Podcast Transcript →powered by Listen411 - fast audio-to-text and summarizationGoogle faces the greatest innovator's dilemma in history. They invented the Transformer — the breakthrough technology powering every modern AI system from ChatGPT to Claude (and, of course, Gemini). They employed nearly all the top AI talent: Ilya Sutskever, Geoff Hinton, Demis Hassabis, Dario Amodei — more or less everyone who leads modern AI worked at Google circa 2014. They built the best dedicated AI infrastructure (TPUs!) and deployed AI at massive scale years before anyone else. And yet... the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022 caught them completely flat-footed. How on earth did the greatest business in history wind up playing catch-up to a nonprofit-turned-startup?Today we tell the complete story of Google's 20+ year AI journey: from their first tiny language model in 2001 through the creation Google Brain, the birth of the transformer, the talent exodus to OpenAI (sparked by Elon Musk's fury over Google’s DeepMind acquisition), and their current all-hands-on-deck response with Gemini. And oh yeah — a little business called Waymo that went from crazy moonshot idea to doing more rides than Lyft in San Francisco, potentially building another Google-sized business within Google. This is the story of how the world's greatest business faces its greatest test: can they disrupt themselves without losing their $140B annual profit-generating machine in Search?Sponsors:Many thanks to our fantastic Fall ‘25 Season partners:J.P. Military Money Lessons That Civilians Can't Afford to Miss | Spencer Reese - E117
FullPodcast: Personal Finance for Long-Term Investors - The Best Interest (LS 44 · TOP 1% what is this?)Episode: Military Money Lessons That Civilians Can't Afford to Miss | Spencer Reese - E117Pub date: 2025-10-01Get Podcast Transcript →powered by Listen411 - fast audio-to-text and summarizationToday, Jesse is joined by Spencer Reese—Air Force veteran, financial educator, and creator of the Military Money Manual—for a conversation about the surprising overlap between military transitions and civilian retirement. Together, they explore why the only constant in retirement is change, how life evolves through "go-go, slow-go, and no-go" phases, and Jesse's framework for a "Retiree's Financial Decathlon," covering everything from building a sustainable paycheck to tax efficiency, healthcare, estate planning, and even learning to spend with intention. Spencer shares lessons from his own service and separation, highlighting the financial quirks of military life—like government-covered housing, allowances that incentivize marriage, and the all-too-common trap of buying too much car—as well as the importance of communication and systems for long-term success. Beyond the dollars, they discuss the identity shifts that come with leaving the military or workforce, the challenge of replacing purpose and community, and how preparation and adaptability ease the transition. Throughout, Jesse and Spencer remind listeners that whether you're a veteran or a civilian, financial independence is as much about mindset and meaning as it is about math. Key Takeaways: • Retirement is not a fixed point in time but an evolving, decades-long transition. • Purpose, meaning, and social connection are as critical as financial stability in retirement. • Jesse's "Retiree's Financial Decathlon" framework highlights ten essential planning areas, including building a paycheck, taxes, healthcare, estate planning, and spending. • Many military families struggle not from lack of will, but from lack of financial skills and role models. • Transitioning out of the military often brings a loss of identity, community, and structure, similar to civilian retirement. • Preparing early—whether through classes like TAP for veterans or retirement workshops for civilians—eases major life transitions. Since 2010, Matthew and his team have built Cloudflare into one of the most important companies on the internet: powering and protecting vast portions of global traffic. Our conversation explores the through-line from Matthew’s initial hunch about fixing the flaws of the early internet, to Cloudflare’s present role as a foundational infrastructure provider. We talk about the early experiments and risks that have shaped Cloudflare’s culture, and how those small bets compounded into a truly iconic company today. Matthew shares stories from the company’s pre-IPO days, the decision to make encryption free, and how Cloudflare’s infrastructure ended up running two of the internet’s thirteen root servers. Toward the end, we dive deep into the transition from a search-driven internet to an answer-driven one, and what that means for publishers, creators, and the future business model of the web.It was especially fun to record this one with Matthew, who I’ve known since USV’s investment in Cloudflare’s Series C back in 2013. Rethinking the 60/40 Portfolio Dana Anspach challenges the traditional portfolio model, highlighting the need for personalized risk management: "It all comes down to being really clear on how you define risk… That's going to lead to different portfolio strategies that best protect against that risk." From alternatives to ETFs, understanding your personal timeline and goals is key to crafting a resilient investment plan. 2. Modern Estate Planning Matters Kemberley Washington emphasizes staying on top of tax law changes and setting up basic legal documents, wills, trusts, powers of attorney, before moving to advanced strategies like donor-advised funds. Jacqueline Schadeck warns: "My fear is that everyone… is part of the 70% of Americans that don't actually have any estate documents in place." Estate planning isn't optional. It's essential. 3. Business Entity & Asset Protection Simplified Entrepreneurs and investors risk everything when they mix personal and business assets. Dana Anspach shares: "You meet the wrong person at the wrong time and you never know what's going to happen… there may be simpler ways to get asset protection in place without the additional complexity." Work with both a CPA and attorney to align legal structures, taxes, and retirement planning for maximum protection. 4. Next-Gen Philanthropy & Sustainable Investing Today's investors want more than returns—they want impact. From ESG investing to donor-advised funds, philanthropy offers tax efficiency, legacy building, and social good. Kemberley Washington notes: "More and more are not only thinking about ESG, but giving more impactful—maybe to a church, tithes, and different things of that nature." Take Action: Protect Your Wealth Today My challenge to you this week: choose one area of your finances that feels exposed and commit to addressing it. Maybe that means calling your financial planner, researching asset protection strategies, or finally scheduling that estate planning meeting you've been putting off. Don't wait for the "perfect time." Small steps now prevent big regrets later. 🎧 Listen to the full episode on the Inspired Money podcast or watch on the Inspired Money YouTube channel. He's also one of the very few people who started as a programmer -- just trying to solve his own problem -- and still runs his company as CEO today even as it approaches a $200B market cap. Tobi has done this in two big ways: first, a willingness throw away his past beliefs in the face of new data, growing into the leader the company needed. And second, by remaining a close observer (and participant!) in how new technology emerges that changes what is possible.Today we talk with him about both. The first half of the episode is about what has changed for him in the AI era. How he spends his time with AI throughout the day, how he thinks about what AI unlocks philosophically, and what he thinks the impact will be on all of us and what we build. The second half is more about Shopify. How he dealt mentally with the explosion in stock price in 2021 from a 20x revenue multiple to a 70x revenue multiple. And then, what he subsequently did when it all came crashing down. We also talk with him about the leadership and product principles that he's employed to steadily grow the company's revenues to an all-time high today.Links:John Collison's Tweet: "Museum of Passion Projects"Sponsors:Plaid: https://plaid.comThe podcast and artwork embedded on this page are from Ben Gilbert and David Rosenthal, which is the property of its owner and not affiliated with or endorsed by Listen Notes, Inc.

The community debated the best redemption strategy—ranging from Delta (discouraged) to BA, Aeroplan, or spreading across multiple programs including Hilton. News updates included Capital One removing Priority Pass restaurant benefits from Venture X Biz cards, a Chase 20% Flying Blue transfer bonus, and Southwest rolling out free Wi-Fi for Rapid Rewards members. They also highlighted multiple transfer bonuses across Hilton, Marriott, and Virgin and reminded listeners of tools like the Transfer Bonus Calculator. The main topic centered on Hilton Honors, with Angie pointing out positives like Hilton’s large global footprint, easy paths to status via co-branded Amex cards, and its uncapped free night certificates (FNCs)—which remain among the most flexible in the industry. Mike countered with drawbacks, noting significant devaluations in 2025, with standard awards now topping 250,000 points per night at premium properties. Benefits can feel weaker than other chains, particularly in the U.S. where breakfast is replaced by limited food and beverage credits and parking fees still apply on award stays. They reviewed Hilton’s four credit card options, their earning rates, elite benefits, and statement credits, as well as the frequent buy-points promos and Amex transfer bonuses. The tip of the week covered how to generate and add an Atmos virtual card to Apple Pay using the BOA app, offering a workaround for those still waiting on their physical cards. Overall, the episode balanced community highlights, industry news, and a deep dive into Hilton’s strengths and weaknesses for travelers navigating the ongoing devaluation landscape.Links to Topics DiscussedCapital One Venture X Business Eliminates Priority Pass Restaurant BenefitChase to Flying Blue Transfer BonusSouthwest Free WiFiWhere to Find Us The Award Travel 101 Facebook Community. Nirav Tolia: Nextdoor. How neighborhood chatter went global
FullPodcast: How I Built This with Guy Raz (LS 83 · TOP 0.01% what is this?)Episode: Nirav Tolia: Nextdoor. How neighborhood chatter went globalPub date: 2025-09-15Get Podcast Transcript →powered by Listen411 - fast audio-to-text and summarizationMany of us don’t know our neighbors anymore — and Nirav Tolia wanted to change that. He walked away from millions in stock options at Yahoo and eventually co-founded Nextdoor, the hyperlocal social network where neighbors share local news and recommendations. Along the way, he learned that for a digital service, Nextdoor demanded a ton of manual work: drawing neighborhood boundaries with Sharpies, sending individual “invite” postcards by snail mail, talking to neighbors about the information they wanted. After 8 years of grind, Nirav stepped away as CEO, only to return 6 years later to spearhead an ambitious rebrand of Nextdoor, which now has 100 million users around the world. In this episode, you’ll learn:Why Nirav walked away from millions in stock options to launch his own business How the failure of an early business helped fuel Nextdoor’s success How not having an initial vision for your brand can be a superpower. Why apps that focus on “local” are so hard to master Why Nirav believes” local” is a massive untapped opportunity in tech. This episode was produced by Casey Herman with music by Ramtin Arablouei. Angie opened with a highlight post from a member who discovered Chase is now more strictly enforcing repeat-sub restrictions, similar to Amex’s lifetime rules. The episode also covered news of elevated welcome offers on IHG credit cards, refreshed Amex Delta card bonuses, and several ongoing mileage sales and hotel promotions. Angie shared her own recent credit card approvals and denials—including a Barclays Red card approval after a manual verification—while Ian celebrated finally getting the Atmos Summit card. Travel updates included Angie’s upcoming New England trip and Miami meetup, and Ian’s EVA and Starlux premium cabin bookings from San Francisco to Asia. The main topic focused on Seats.aero, exploring its origins, how the product vision has evolved, and what makes it unique among a crowded field of award search tools. Ian discussed how the platform stands out with features like customizable alerts, streamlined award searches, and the new “Seats.aero Assistant.” They also touched on hotel alert services, airline coverage gaps (like BA not yet being integrated), and planned enhancements for casual and advanced users alike. The episode wrapped with Angie’s tip of the week: always follow up on bank communications. She shared how a letter from Barclays, which she initially considered ignoring, ended up securing her approval for another 70,000 AA miles after a quick verification call. The takeaway: those small steps can sometimes unlock big wins in the points-and-miles game.Where to Find Us The Award Travel 101 Facebook Community. In 1944, in the middle of the island-hopping campaign, American war planners set their sights on Japanese-controlled Formosa. What did the American invasion plan look like? Why did Marshall decide to go another route? What lessons do this and other amphibious invasions hold for Taiwan’s current force posture? To discuss, ChinaTalk interviewed US Army Field Artillery Lieutenant Colonel J. Kevin McKittrick, currently at the Air War College in Alabama and a veteran of multiple deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan.Co-hosting today is our resident Taiwan consultant Nicholas Welch. We discuss: The US military’s aborted plan to invade Taiwan during WWII; Why bigger is better when it comes to amphibious assaults; What the US got right and the CCP gets wrong about civil-military relations; Taiwan’s defense concept, and the opportunities presented by “operational pause”; The awful, unending relevance of traditional artillery in modern war; And why the US doesn’t need its own “rocket force” … yet.
