ERP Explained w/ GoodDay's Kyle Hency
FullPodcast: The Unofficial Shopify Podcast (LS 50 · TOP 0.5% what is this?)Episode: ERP Explained w/ GoodDay's Kyle HencyPub date: 2026-02-10Get Podcast Transcript →powered by Listen411 - fast audio-to-text and summarizationFor most direct-to-consumer brands, the term "ERP" evokes dread. Six-month implementations. Six-figure costs. Software built for factories, not Shopify stores. Kyle Hency experienced that pain firsthand. He scaled Chubbies Shorts past $100 million in revenue, and along the way, his "sophisticated" spreadsheet system (built by a former banker) completely fell apart. The breaking point? When Nordstrom called wanting to stock Chubbies, and his team realized they had no infrastructure to even accept the order. That painful lesson led Hency to raise $13.5 million for GoodDay Software, an ERP designed from day one for Shopify merchants. In this episode, we demystify what an ERP actually is, identify the warning signs that a brand has outgrown spreadsheets, and explore why the traditional barriers to operational infrastructure are finally falling for smaller businesses. Hency makes the case that it doesn't have to be this hard anymore.SPONSORSSwym - Wishlists, Back in Stock alerts, & moregetswym.com/kurtCleverific - Smart order editing for Shopifycleverific.comZipify - Build high-converting sales funnelszipify.com/KURTLINKSGoodDay Software: https://gooddaysoftware.comKyle on LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/kylehencyThe Normal Brand case study: https://bit.ly/4bzwcFMWORK WITH KURTApply for Shopify Helpethercycle.com/applySee Our Resultsethercycle.com/workFree Newsletterkurtelster.comThe Unofficial Shopify Podcast is hosted by Kurt Elster and explores the stories behind successful Shopify stores. Ep 532 Is Your Business Worth More Dead or Alive?
FullPodcast: Built to Sell Radio (LS 50 · TOP 0.5% what is this?)Episode: Ep 532 Is Your Business Worth More Dead or Alive?Pub date: 2026-02-06Get Podcast Transcript →powered by Listen411 - fast audio-to-text and summarizationWe often think of a "successful exit" as handing over the keys to a perfectly oiled machine—a business that is growing, profitable, and operationally sound. But what happens when the machine starts to sputter? What if the margins are too thin, the operations are exhausting, and you are simply burned out? It is easy to assume that a broken business model means a worthless company. But as this week's guest on Built to Sell Radio proves, sometimes the individual parts are worth more than the whole. Meet Jason Patel. Jason built Transitions Education, a college counseling marketplace. On the surface, it looked great: upper six-figure revenue and a noble mission. But under the hood, customer acquisition costs were eating his margins, and he was carrying $250,000 in personal debt to keep it afloat. He was ready to walk away. He assumed he had zero leverage. Then, a "Micro Private Equity" firm reached out. They didn't want his headaches. They didn't want his operations. They didn't even want his business model. They wanted his "parts." Specifically, they wanted his SEO ranking, his blog traffic, and his 5-star reputation. They realized they could strip away the expensive service delivery and plug his high-performing marketing assets into their own portfolio. In this episode, Jason breaks down how he structured an asset sale that allowed him to: Sell the high-value "parts" (marketing assets) without the operational baggage. Avoid a grueling earn-out (because the buyer didn't need him to run the company). Pay off his debt and fund his next venture. If you feel like your business model is grinding you down, this episode will open your eyes to the hidden value sitting on your balance sheet right now. He explains why cashing a check is actually a "new credit extension" where the bank bets on both the writer and the payee, and why profit-maximizing institutions often decline to bank individuals who represent even a "material risk" of a single bounced check. From the manual "rituals" of endorsement to the way fintechs like Ingo Money and Cash App use persistent identity to narrow the risk envelope, Patrick examines the technical and social reasons why some people pay to access their own wages, others don’t, and whether we can do anything about that.–Full transcript available here: www.complexsystemspodcast.com/check-cashing/–Presenting Sponsor: Mercury Complex Systems is presented by Mercury—radically better banking for founders. How Investors are using AI - [Business Breakdowns, EP.240]

This is a question I get from many of you, and while there is no shortage of content on the implications of AI, I know there's an appetite to learn more about tangible use cases, how to make sure you're getting the most out of these tools, how to think about advancements in the technology, and ensuring that you're keeping pace with the innovation curve. So my guest today is David Plon, Founder of Portrait Analytics. Now, David and Portrait have been partners of Business Breakdowns since last year, but I specifically asked David to do this episode because, one, he is really front and center to how investors are using and applying AI. But two, and maybe more importantly, he and his team come with a background in investing. So while the conversation doesn’t really focus on Portrait, you’ll hear references to what he and his team are building and how they’ve shaped it for investors, you’ll very much understand when you hear David talk that he is someone who understands the pain points of an investor. I think everyone will find something in this episode that will benefit them in their day to day, and I would love to hear the feedback. For the full show notes, transcript, and links to the best content to learn more, check out the episode page here. — This episode is brought to you by Portrait Analytics - your centralized resource for AI-powered idea generation, thesis monitoring, and personalized report building. The episode opens with a timely highlight from the Award Travel 101 community, where a member used a Roame alert to snag ANA First Class for 108,000 Avianca miles—award space that no other search tool caught. Angie then runs through the latest news, including Iberia’s 40% off award promotion (making Europe reachable for as few as 9,600 Avios), elevated welcome offers on IHG credit cards, and a brief mention of the newly announced (and somewhat confusing) Bilt 2.0 redemption options. In the “bonuses and updates” segment, Angie shares recent card application adventures in her household, including abandoning a complicated Bilt Palladium application and dealing with a frozen credit report on a Wells Fargo Autograph Journey application. She also outlines her current strategy to earn a Hilton Free Night Certificate and extra United miles by timing large insurance payments. On the travel front, Angie discusses the challenge of sorting through conflicting information on Swiss train passes, while Tim checks in with his own updates. The main topic dives deep into Roame.Travel, with Tim explaining what inspired him to build the tool, how its vision has evolved, and what differentiates it in an increasingly crowded award search space. They discuss how Roame can be especially powerful for casual users through alerts and streamlined searches, upcoming enhancements, and current limitations—such as airlines the tool doesn’t yet support, including British Airways and Cathay Pacific. The conversation gives listeners a clear sense of where Roame fits into the award travel ecosystem and how to get the most value out of it.Episode Links:Iberia PromoIHG Welcome OffersBilt Cash Redemption OptionsWhere to Find Us The Award Travel 101 Facebook Community. Curiosity As Your Travel Guide + Exploring Overlooked Destinations with John McKenzie

John McKenzie is a long-time traveler and curious explorer who shares stories and insights from off-the-beaten-track destinations around the world. Through his content and curated CuriosiTrips, he aims to expand others’ sense of what’s possible by encouraging a more curious, open approach to travel. He’s also a new contributor to National Geographic, writing the sections on Djibouti, Eritrea, and Somalia for The Traveler’s Atlas of the World. In this episode, John and I sit down in person to explore the concept of curiosity as a travel compass, why some destinations gain reputations that don’t match reality, and how community and mindset shape meaningful journeys. Travel is often framed around checklists and highlights, but John reframes it as a curiosity‑driven practice that enriches both travel and everyday life. You’ll hear how to exercise your curiosity muscle, embrace spontaneity, and responsibly explore destinations often overlooked or misunderstood. Why we still trust Wikipedia, with cofounder Jimmy Wales
FullPodcast: GZERO World with Ian Bremmer (LS 55 · TOP 0.5% what is this?)Episode: Why we still trust Wikipedia, with cofounder Jimmy WalesPub date: 2025-12-13Get Podcast Transcript →powered by Listen411 - fast audio-to-text and summarizationAt a moment when Americans can’t agree on much of anything, one unlikely institution still commands broad trust: Wikipedia. Ian Bremmer sits down with Wikipedia cofounder Jimmy Wales to ask why the crowdsourced encyclopedia remains one of the most visited and relied-upon sites in the world, even as trust in media, government, and tech companies continues to collapse. That trust, Wales argues, comes from Wikipedia’s decentralized model and its refusal to speak with a single authoritative voice on contested issues. “We don’t try to answer the question or take a side,” Wales says. “What we do is describe the debate.” But that principle is under strain. Wales addresses recent backlash over Wikipedia’s handling of politically sensitive topics, including Gaza, where he says the site crossed an important line by adopting language that lacked broad consensus. “For Wikipedia to speak in its own voice requires an extremely high bar,” he explains.Bremmer and Wales also explore how artificial intelligence is reshaping the information ecosystem. While AI systems are already trained on Wikipedia’s content, Wales says the platform is moving cautiously, prioritizing transparency, open source tools, and independence over partnerships with big tech. “Wikipedia’s biggest liability is also its biggest strength,” Wales says. “No one owns it.” In an internet increasingly dominated by centralized platforms and opaque algorithms, Wales makes the case that Wikipedia’s model, messy, imperfect, and community-driven, may be more necessary than ever.Host: Ian BremmerGuest: Jimmy Wales Subscribe to the GZERO World with Ian Bremmer Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or your preferred podcast platform, to receive new episodes as soon as they're published. Under his leadership, Shopify grew from an online snowboard shop in Ottawa, Canada in 2004 to the world's leading e-commerce platform, powering over 4 million merchants in more than 175 countries. The company went public in 2015 at a $1.27 billion valuation and has since grown to a market capitalization exceeding $200 billion. After dropping out of school following the tenth grade in Germany, Lütke completed an apprenticeship in computer programming at the Koblenzer Carl-Benz-School. He moved to Canada in 2002 and launched Snowdevil, an online snowboard shop, in 2004 with Scott Lake and Daniel Weinand. Frustrated with existing e-commerce solutions, Lütke built his own platform using Ruby on Rails, which became Shopify in 2006. He became known for pioneering accessible e-commerce tools, contributing to the Ruby on Rails open-source community, and championing the idea that entrepreneurship should be available to everyone. His accomplishments include building Shopify into one of Canada's most valuable companies, being named "CEO of the Year" by The Globe and Mail in 2014, receiving Canada's Meritorious Service Cross in 2018 for his contributions to the technology industry, launching Shopify's Sustainability Fund in 2019 to invest in climate solutions, co-founding the Thistledown Foundation with his wife Fiona McKean to support healthcare and environmental causes, and serving on Coinbase's board of directors since 2022. Longevity & Retirement | Jeremy Keil - E127
FullPodcast: Personal Finance for Long-Term Investors - The Best Interest (LS 44 · TOP 1% what is this?)Episode: Longevity & Retirement | Jeremy Keil - E127Pub date: 2026-01-14Get Podcast Transcript →powered by Listen411 - fast audio-to-text and summarizationJesse is joined by Jeremy Keil—Certified Financial Planner, Chartered Financial Analyst, author of Retire Today, and host of the Retirement Revealed podcast—for a wide-ranging conversation that reframes how people should think about retirement decisions long before and long after the final day of work. Together, they explore why most people retire earlier than planned, why longevity is so often misunderstood, and how flawed assumptions about life expectancy, Social Security, and taxes can quietly undermine otherwise solid plans. Jeremy introduces the concept of "retirement longevity" as both when retirement starts and how long it may last, emphasizing the importance of personalized life expectancy modeling, joint longevity for couples, and treating Social Security as insurance rather than an investment. The discussion also dives deep into Jeremy's five-step Retirement Master Plan—starting with spending, then income, tax planning, investing, and legacy—highlighting why tax strategy and Roth conversions are often the most powerful yet overlooked levers in retirement planning. Throughout the episode, Jesse and Jeremy blend technical insight with behavioral clarity, addressing the emotional hurdles retirees face, from fear of running out of money to the identity shift from saver to spender, ultimately offering a grounded, practical roadmap for building confidence and clarity in retirement. Key Takeaways: • Average life expectancy statistics are misleading for near-retirees. Personalized longevity estimates are far more useful than population averages. • Couples must plan around joint life expectancy, not individual longevity. • Current take-home pay is a practical proxy for estimating retirement lifestyle spending. • Roth conversions are situational tools, not universally good strategies. The timing and size of Roth conversions matter as much as the decision to do them. • Many retirees struggle emotionally with shifting from saving to spending. The healthiest mindset shift is from "saver" or "spender" to lifelong "planner." FullPodcast: Planet Money (LS 83 · TOP 0.01% what is this?)Episode: Venezuela’s recent economic history (Update)Pub date: 2026-01-04Get Podcast Transcript →powered by Listen411 - fast audio-to-text and summarizationWe’ve been checking in on the economic conditions in Venezuela for about a decade now. In response to the U.S. strike and the capture of Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro this weekend, we’re re-surfacing this episode with an update. The original version ran in 2016, with an update in 2024.Back in 2016, things were pretty bad in Venezuela. Grocery stores didn’t have enough food. Hospitals didn’t have basic supplies, like gauze. Child mortality was spiking. Businesses were shuttering. It was one of the epic economic collapses of our time. And it was totally avoidable.Venezuela used to be a relatively rich country. It has just about all the economic advantages a country could ask for: Beautiful beaches and mountains ready for tourism, fertile land good for farming, an educated population, and oil, lots and lots of oil.But during the boom years, the Venezuelan government made some choices that add up to an economic time bomb.Today on the show, we run through the decisions that foreshadowed the collapse, and we hear from people in Venezuela in 2016 at a particularly low point for the economy, then again and in 2024 after a bounce back and a stabilization, in part due to the unlikely impact of the U.S. dollar. 10 Years of Acquired (with Michael Lewis)

It's a puzzling question: episodes are four hours long, they come out infrequently, and they usually don’t have guests or video. Hardly the standard-issue playbook for podcasting success! And yet well over a million smart, curious and exceedingly busy humans share their (your!) valuable time with us every month. Why? This is the exact paradox that has been rolling around in the head of Michael Lewis (yes, that Michael Lewis) since he found the show earlier this year.So we asked Michael to be our guest "interlocutor" and share what he thinks is going on here, while we share ten lessons we've stolen (graciously) from companies we've studied and brought into Acquired itself. He takes us through the entire Acquired journey: how we started, why we've never hired anyone or raised money, how we pick episodes, what our business model actually is, why we focus on quality and enjoyment over maximizing enterprise value, and ultimately why we’re all — you, him, us — kindred spirits together. Oh, and just for fun, we recorded this episode where another special journey began — the garage where Google was founded.Thank you for an incredible decade together… here's to the next one!Sponsors:Many thanks to our fantastic Fall ‘25 Season partners:J.P. The schedule is packed, the waitlist is long, but every dollar still depends on them showing up. In this week's episode of Built to Sell Radio, John talks to a physical therapist who turned a fully booked, owner-dependent practice into a boutique fitness business with recurring revenue, a second-in-command, and a clean exit on her terms. After a first deal collapsed on closing day thanks to a last-minute bank clause, she went back to market with three non-negotiables and still got a seven-figure outcome.
