Gregory Fischbach Interview Part 2

As we pick up our conversation with Gregory Fischbach, Acclaim's long standing contract to port Williams/Midway arcade games is coming to an end and a shift to originally developed content begins. The purchase of Valiant Comics, the launch of franchises such as Turok and NFL Quarterback Club will redefine the company as it nears its end and Greg goes off to new ventures. Gregory Fischbach - Interview Part 1

Gregory Fischbach has had a career most of us could only dream of. Starting out as a civil rights lawyer in the 1960s, he then represented some of the biggest musical acts of the 70s, before reinventing himself in the video game industry and running Activision's European operations. All of this culminated in the formation of Acclaim and the building of one of the most powerful publishers of the 8 and 16 bit eras. In part 1 of our interview, Greg talks about those early years, what drove him, and how business was done when games were young. NOTE: This interview was recorded over many sessions. Any meandering is purely due to the fact that we kept getting lost on tangents and coming back to topics sometimes weeks later. Yeah, we were having way too much fun. :) Send comments on twitter @videogamenewsr2 Or Instagram https://www.instagram.com/vgnrtm Or [email protected] And if you like what we are doing here at the podcast, don't forget to like us on your podcasting app of choice, YouTube, and/or support us on patreon! https://www.patreon.com/VGNRTM Sources: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._Edgar_Hoover https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peace_Corps https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Lloyd_Prosser https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crosby,_Stills,_Nash_%26_Young https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Miller_(musician) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boz_Scaggs https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merle_Haggard https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Activision https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghostbusters https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Branson https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atari_2600 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commodore_64 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZX_Spectrum https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amstrad_CPC https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mortal_Kombat_(1992_video_game) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8V7TwlYCt0 https://accelerate.games/ https://www.mobygames.com/game/toy-soldiers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6ZOWWs6rNE https://www.mobygames.com/game/turok-dinosaur-hunter https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RCA https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bertelsmann https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acclaim_Entertainment https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minoru_Arakawa https://www.mobygames.com/company/acclaim-entertainment-inc https://www.mobygames.com/game/mortal-kombat https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entertainment_Software_Rating_Board https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WMS_Industries https://www.mobygames.com/game/nba-jam https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Power_Team_(TV_series) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0165600/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6RH33lDxrY https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LJN https://www.mobygames.com/game/simpsons-bart-vs-the-space-mutants https://macysthanksgiving.fandom.com/wiki/Bart_Simpson https://www.handheldmuseum.com/Acclaim/index.html https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Nintendo_Entertainment_System https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Genesis https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mortal_Kombat_(1992_video_game) https://www.mobygames.com/game/dave-mirra-freestyle-bmx https://www.mobygames.com/game-group/nfl-quarterback-series https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_64 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larry_Probst https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Line_Cinema https://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/gtfo https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_Boy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MicroProse https://www.patreon.com/posts/36710924 https://store.steampowered.com/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GameStop https://www.mobygames.com/game-group/mary-kate-and-ashley-licensees https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Payola

Michael Dornbrook Interview Part 1

Michael Dornbrook Interview Part 1 He was there at the birth of Infocom, founded the Zork Users Group, the first hint books, and stayed on through thick and thin. The first half covers his background, the founding of Infocom, his involvement, the creation of InvisiClues, some pretty aggressive advertising and the first signs that something may not be right in the house that Zork built. Jerry Wolosenko Interview

In the earliest days of computer games, someone had to get games from fledgling publishers to the mom-and-pop computer stores dotted across the country. Our guest, Jerry Wolosenko, was one such man and from picking product at events like the West Coast Computer Faire, to representing Psygnosis in the USA, to getting involved with a little start-up called Harmonix, Jerry has met every big name in the business, seen every ebb and flow the industry has to offer and regales us with some truly amazing stories. Sit back and relax as we go deep into the history of gaming with Jerry Wolosenko. AMOA 1980 with GameResearch_E

We often think of trade shows today as just gimmicky PR extravaganzas that rarely surprise and amaze, with most big reveals having been leaked way before hand, and little revolutionary happening on the show floor. The Amusement & Music Operators Association International Exposition of Games and Music in 1980 was everything but though, with some (pun intended) game changing reveals, as the market shifted with old companies pivoting, new, global players entering the fray and new technology and game play innovations forever changing what consumers would expect from a visit to the arcade. Join Karl and Ethan of The History of How We Play, as we deep dive into the historic turning point that was the 1980 AMOA. Don Daglow Interview Part 2

We pick up in this second part of our interview with Don Daglow, as he leaves EA to join Broderbund, where he would produce Prince of Persia, help land distribution for SimCity and license Star Wars. He followed that amazing run with his own studio, Beyond Software, later renamed Stormfront Studios, that would create the first graphical MMO, Neverwinter Nights, bring Madden to the PC and so much more. Dan Daglow Interview Part 1

Don Daglow started making games on PDP-10s in the 70s, before becoming one of the first developers for the Intellivision, creating the groundbreaking strategy title Utopia. Later, he went on to be an early producer at EA and Broderbund, helping bring us classics like Racing Destruction Set, Shufflepuck Cafe (a personal favorite of mine), Prince of Persia, SimCity and Where in Europe is Carmen Sandiego. We explore these early years of his career, the nature of the business back then and how we could have had a Star Wars RPG back in the 80s in this first half of our 2 part interview. https://www.daglowslaws.com/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Daglow https://www.mobygames.com/developer/sheet/view/developerId,3246/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayCable https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_crash_of_1983 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_Arts https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trip_Hawkins https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PARC_(company) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Inc.
