I have been the subject of many lies myself, especially when I was in middle school and high school. One of those lies was so bad that if others had believed it, it could have gotten me in some really big trouble. But even with those lies that were spread about me, it seems like rumors and lies have become common today, especially among teens. You may have heard of this, I’m on TikTok, but I read an article about this a couple days ago and I wish I could say it surprised me, but it really doesn’t. But there is a new trend on TikTok where TikTokers are “exposing gossipers” by when they overheard others gossiping about someone, they air everything on video, sometimes getting down to the very detail of what these gossipers look like so people know who they are and who it is they are talking about.” So, essentially, they are gossiping about gossipers, making fun of the gossipers, but also hurting a whole lot of people in the process. It's crazy, but it’s become such common place that we don’t even think about it when people talk to us about others…or we talk to others about someone else. A quick tip about your friends, if they are talking to you behind someone’s back, they are most likely talking about you behind your back. Okay, so back to the question, “What do I do when someone is spreading lies about me at school?” When someone tells a lie about us, we instantly want to defend ourselves by telling everyone that it’s not true or even by going to the person spreading the lies and confront them. However, the problem is, when we do this, one, it makes us look guilty and two it causes more challenges. It basically adds fuel to the fire. They want a reaction out of you, and you just gave it to them. People want to make others feel bad to make themselves feel better, the problem with that is that they actually feel better. You might be thinking, “Yeah, but they are the most popular people in school.” It doesn’t matter. Actually, many times, the most popular people in school are some of the most insecure people. They gain their identity and social status from the people around them, and if they mess up, they lose it all. When they are at home by themselves at the end of the day, they usually hate who they are. Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here! We are going to start a special series over the rest of this month and next month. We are going to be doing multiple AMA episodes. These questions are special, though, because these are questions that the ladies asked during UncommonTEEN Live! This week’s AMA episode is all about influence! We are answering the questions, “How do you influence others at school without them influencing you.” “How do you show the love of Jesus to others but not become best friends when you’re being nice, but they are not a good influence.” “How do you stand out from the world.” These are such great questions, and they are questions that you might have asked even yourself. To get started, let’s answer the questions, “What is an influencer?” “What is influence?” Am I really an influencer?” If I were to ask you, “what is the definition of influencer?” You might say something along the lines of someone on YouTube or TikTok that has positioned themselves to be an expert in a certain area that has a massive number of followers. They set trends and have the power to affect many people. According to this definition, you would most likely say that you are not on influencer. But did you know that you are an influencer…and even bigger influencer than you realize. Every one of us are influencers. But before we dig into that, let’s answer the question, “What is influence?” The definition of the word influence is, “the power to have an effect on people.” You are an influencer, because weather you realize it or not every time you come into contact with someone, you are influencing them in some kind of way. It may be for the good or it may be for the bad. Ladies, you are an influencer whether you like it or not…no matter what you’re doing or where you’re at. Now, I want you to look back on your life over this past month, over the past couple weeks and I want you to ask yourself, “Has my influence been about me or has it been shining the light of Jesus to this dark world?” If it’s been about you, no condemnation. Ask God for forgiveness, He’s ready to forgive you and decide…I am going all in with Jesus today. I am making my influence all about Jesus! In Matthew 5:14, Jesus calls you a light in this world. He says, “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.” This world is a dark place. It’s broken and without hope. I want you to think about light for a minute. What does light to? It helps us see in the dark, so we don’t hurt ourselves. It exposes what’s hidden in the dark. If you drop a $20 on the ground in the dark, it’s hard to see where it landed unless you turn on the light on your phone or in the room, right? It exposes what was hidden in the dark. It also converts the darkness into light. No amount of darkness can stand up to the smallest amount of light. “Don't shine so others can see you. As she's looking at her social media, she's seeing how all of her friends are living life and her life is on hold and she's having a hard time fighting bitterness and anger. Zahra is a 15 year old form Syrian living in a Syrian refugee camp. Life as she knew it was completely uprooted and now she's fighting dispair as she feels her life will never be the same again and the dreams she had for her life are now never going to happen. Mei is a 15 tear old Chinese Christian living in Canada and is in the midst of some of the hardest restrictions during the pandemic. As life for Mei is moved online, she is now fighting temptations that she never faced before...especially when a classmate of hers, a guy she has a crush on asks her to send her inappropriate pictures online. Katya is a 15 year old in Ukraine and as war breaks out, she finds herself hiding in a bomb shelter, fearing for her life. She struggles with fear, panic attacks and anxiety not knowing what her future is going to hold or if she'll be safe. Even though your story may not be the exact situations that you or your friends might be facing today, you might find that you can relate to these girls...the struggles that they are facing...and the emotions that they are walking through. But in the midst of all these stories...and in the midst of your story, it may feel like you're being imprisoned by your circumstances, but God is pursuing you with hope! Witch Tok (11 billion videos just last year with over 30 billion views) If you are on TikTok, you’ve most likely seen some of these videos even if you didn’t stop to watch. They are the new trend. Panera now has palm reading tech at their locations so you can scan your palm and it will tell you exactly what you need to order. McDonalds was giving away chances to win tarot card readings with the purchase of their meals. Disney has shows that glorify being impregnated by satan…or being a daughter of satan himself. The theme of these movies is that the girls feels like she’s alone and doesn’t belong and satan will accept them. This is a lie from the enemy. The devil could care less about anyone. Target was selling shirts earlier this year…may still be selling them, I don’t know because I don’t shop there, but these shirts said, “satan loves you.” That is a lie. Satan only cares about himself and could care less about anyone else. The reason why, he has always wanted to have more authority than humans and he doesn’t. God made humans to be of a higher rank than angels and that infuriates him. What really made me righteously angry this past week was I found where a company was selling an Ouija board that is for Christians! On the box is actually says that if you use this board, you can talk “directly to Jesus Himself.” Ladies, this isn’t Jesus they are talking to, they are demons. And a side note, you don’t need anything to go between you and God for you to talk to Him. You can talk directly to Him…and He will speak directly to you. Now, most of the time He will talk to you, is through the Bible, but He can also talk to your Spirit…that’s not as common, but He does. We just need to learn how to listen. If you are looking for guidance, ask God! He would love to give you the answer! James 1:5-6 says, “f you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. 6 But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind.” Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us to trust in the Lord with all our heart and do not depend on our own understanding. Acknowledge Him in all you do and He will show you which path to take. Psalm 32:8, God tells us that HE will guide us along the best path for our life. He will advise us and watch over us. Psalm 119:105 tells us that His Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. And the craziest part is, do you know who they are marketing to the most…young girls and teen girls. Not boys, you! If you have not listened to last week’s episode, I highly encourage you to go back and listen to it! As I shared last week, it probably doesn’t come as a surprise to us that we are living in some pretty dark times. We have the war in Israel that just broke out, people are more confused than ever by what is right and what is wrong. Outside of a college just the other day, there were protesters that were advocating murder. I wish I could share that this world is going to get better, but unfortunately, it’s not. The Bible talks about this in Isaiah 60:1-3. It says, “Arise, Jerusalem! Let your light shine for all to see.For the glory of the Lord rises to shine on you. Darkness as black as night covers all the nations of the earth, (this is talking about what we’re seeing today) but the glory of the Lord rises and appears over you. All nations will come to your light; mighty kings will come to see your radiance.” How do we stand strong during this time? How do we, like Anna asked, keep looking to God even in the hard times? Last week, we began talking about the armor of God and we started digging into the first piece, the belt of Truth, but before we get back into that, let’s go back and read Ephesians 6:10-18. It says, “be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.11 Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. 12 For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. 14 Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. 15 For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared.[e] 16 In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil.[f] 17 Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere. We have to put on the whole armor of God. But what does that actually mean? Sometimes I struggle with not looking to God as soon as something goes wrong but I want to." Anna, this is such a great question. This is going to be a two part series, because I want you to really get this! It most likely comes to no surprise to you all that we are living in some very interesting times. The world is getting darker and darker. Every time you turn on the news, it seems like there’s something else to be concerned about. We are living in a world where it seems like everyone is so confused, they don’t know what’s right and what’s wrong anymore, they are without hope…and then on top of that we have an enemy who’s number one goal is what John 10:10 tells us…it’s to come into our lives, to steal, to kill and to destroy. So, with all this craziness, how do we keep looking to God even in the hard times? Well, first of all, let me tell you…there is hope! As Christians, when the world is so confused and have questions…they don’t have answers, but as Christians, we do have answers and we do have hope. Ladies, this world is going to get darker and darker, but we have hope! Isaiah 60 verses 1-3 says, “Arise, Jerusalem! Let your light shine for all to see. For the glory of the Lord rises to shine on you. Darkness as black as night covers all the nations of the earth, (this is talking about what we’re seeing today) but the glory of the Lord rises and appears over you. All nations will come to your light; mighty kings will come to see your radiance.” Ladies, while this world is getting darker and darker…God says you as a part of the body of Christ are going to get brighter and brighter! People will be amazed by your brightness, and they will be drawn to you. They want what you have! Ladies, you don’t have to worry about the enemy…you don’t have to worry about his agenda to steal, to kill and to destroy. You can stand strong and have hope even in the darkest of times. You have a God who is fighting for you. Who will never leave you nor turn His back on you. Deuteronomy 1:30 says, “The Lord your God is going ahead of you. He will fight for you, just as you saw him do in Egypt.” This is talking about what Moses freed the Israelites with the of God from the Egyptian people who were holding them as slaves. Deuteronomy 31 says, “So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.” How do we stand strong and courageous. How do we not allow ourselves to be afraid and panic. And as Anna asked, "how do we keep looking to God even in the hard times?" Her fixation to be super thin nearly cost her her life. Although Jenelle was very successful in both her modeling and acting career, she had extremely low self confidence. She constantly compared herself to others she saw as prettier and more desirable. Jenelle began the saying the phrase "Confident in my skin" to embrace the uniqueness in which God created His daughters. We have been created in His imagine and He made us exactly how He needed. Because of the direct impact the media plays on how our young girls perceive themselves, many are ashamed of their beautiful features that God gave them so they try to change to fit into society. This week we’re going to talk what it means to shine your light in a world that is full of craziness, chaos, darkness and without hope. Living in a culture and a world like this, it definitely takes courage and boldness to shine the light of Jesus. Matthew 5:14-16 is our theme verse for UncommonTEEN Live this year. It says, " You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do theylight a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men,that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. Ladies, you are the light of the world and it’s time to let your let be an influence to everyone around you! Think about verse 14. It says, “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden." I don’t know if you have ever been to the mountains and have seen houses that are set out on a field. About 2 hours from where I live, in Chattanooga, TN, one of the neat things to look at are all of the houses and businesses that are set on the mountains. When you drive through at night, it’s such a beautiful sight to see. You are like that city that is set on a hill. God is calling you out and He’s saying, “It’s time for you to shine your light so bright that everyone who comes near you can’t help but look at it. It’s time for you to influence the world around you with the light that is inside of you.” Verse 15 then goes on to say, “Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.” One thing about the lamps that they used during the time of Jesus is that they were their only source of light. When this was the only source of light for the people living at that time, it wouldn’t make sense for them to hide that light under a basket. They wouldn’t be able to see anything clearly in the darkness. God is telling you to not be afraid to shine your light in this dark world. Let your light shine so you can influence the world around you. They need to see your light and see that there is hope. When we place our light, the light of Jesus on the inside of us under a basket, nobody can see it. There is no hope. Don’t shy back…be the light God called you to be. Don’t be afraid to stand up and pray when your youth pastor asks if someone will pray. Don’t shy away when you can help someone else or offer to pray for someone. Step out. Be bold. Be courageous. Stand strong for God! Let your light shine! Then finally, Matthew 5:16 says, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in Heaven.” We need to take action and shine our lights so brightly. On last week’s episode, we talked about why it’s a dare to be beautiful. We first began by defining what that word dare means. That word dare means: the courage that is required to do something big. Dare also means to challenge someone to do something that requires boldness. And lastly dare means to confront something boldly. So, why does it take courage and boldness to be confident? Why does it take courage and boldness to hold your heard high and not be so shaken by what others think about you? Ladies, you are in a fight your life, but you’re also in a fight for your future. There is a fight against your identity:Meaning the enemy and this culture don’t want you to see yourself as God sees you, so they try to get you to believe something that’s not true about who you are. There is a fight against your friends. This world and all it has to offer can be enticing and you may see your friends deciding to straddle that line between living for God and living for this world and eventually you may even see them completely abandoning their faith…and it hurts to watch our friends go through this. There is a fight against your schools and the agendas this culture is trying to push that is so against God. There is a fight to make sure there’s absolutely no place for God in school. There is a fight against your value and your worth.We constantly criticize who we are based on what others think. There is a fight against your body image and how you see yourself.Nitpicking everything about us. There is a fight against your purpose. Do we really have a purpose? Why am I here? There is a fight against the people that you are looking to that influence you.So many people are no longer standing for the Truth. There is a fight against your walk with God…Reading the Bible, praying, worship. There is a fight against your time…We're so busy that our head is spinning. There’s a fight against your confidence. This world is telling you to be confident in yourself. You’ve got this! You can do it! However, that’s not what God says. Ladies, it’s a dare to be confident, because it takes courage and boldness to stand against this culture and say, enough is enough! My confidence comes from the Lord! I am confident in the way I look, because God made me beautifully. I am confident in my walk with God, because He will never fail me. He is always faithful. I am confident in my purpose! Celeste says, "I'm a Christian teen and last year I was surrounded by people who did not share the same beliefs as I did. I felt like I was being pressured to be someone I wasn't so I told them I was lesbian to fit in. Now, I know I was wrong and I've been trying to surround myself with more like-minded people. However, when I see my old friends, I feel pressured to still talk about the LGBTQ community and agree with it, when I don't, then afterwards I feel bad." And Nicole says, “Hey Jamie. I’m in some kind of dilemma. So I recently moved continents and had to attend a new school. It’s a lot different from my school at home. I really prayed for God to lead me to good friends so I won’t be alone on the first day. And it did happen; I was welcomed by an amazing group of girls. But they don’t really have a relationship with God or seek to have one. It’s been so hard trying to share my faith because of fear of rejection. Lately my relationship with God has gone downhill and I’m planning on spending the summer getting closer to Him. I told God that I truly want Him to use me for His work and that I’m ready to lay down those things I hold dear to me. So my new friends added me to their group chat mainly to talk about our holiday plans but I’ve been having this feeling to leave it. I don’t know if it’s God telling me to or if I’m just trying to pull back from them. I did leave but they asked me why I left when I came to school and since I had no answer, I just told them to add me back. What do you think I should do? They’ve been so nice to me since the day I arrived and I don’t want them to feel like I don’t want to be friends anymore. I’ve asked God if it’s Him trying to tell me if I should leave the group. I know this is more of a trivial issue but I don’t want anything to separate me from God." I heard someone say this the other day and it really made me think…they said that one of the biggest challenges that we face in life comes from temptations. I don’t know about you, but that doesn’t make me feel very encouraged. However, there is encouragement, because just because we are tempted, it doesn’t mean that temptations have to overcome us. 1 John 5:4 tells us that whatever is born of God, overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world, our faith. Meaning if you have given your life to Jesus, He’s talking to you…if you have God on your side, you can overcome any temptation that tries to come your way! 1 Corinthians 10:13 says, “For no temptation, no matter how it comes or where it leads has overtaken you that is not common to man [that is, no temptation or trial has come to you that is beyond human resistance. But God is faithful [to His Word and to His compassionate nature], and He [can be trusted] not to let you be tempted beyond your ability and strength of resistance, but with the temptation He will [always] provide the way out. Ladies, we all face temptations. You may be walking through some temptations right now, so I want you to know that you are not alone. The good news is, though, that temptation doesn’t have to defeat you. God tells us that when temptation comes, he will provide a way of escape every single time…it’s up to us to choose it! Temptation will come to you, because the enemy is real and he wants to pull you down any way he can, but it doesn’t have to overcome you! We just have to decide that we are not going to let that temptation overcome us! The two biggest things that the enemy tries to tempt us with is our mind—or our thinking and our emotions. Can I get an amen? Did you know that not all the thoughts that come through your head are your thoughts? Have you ever had a thought come into your head and you were like…where in the world did that come from? That is not something I would ever think about? You were almost ashamed by it. The enemy will put thoughts in your mind, because he wants you to take the bait. If you take a thought that he places in your mind and you begin to really think about it. When it was just a thought…that was the temptation, when you began to really think about it and think about it…that’s when that temptation won. AND 59% of Americans want to read their Bibles more...now I know this talks about Americans, but my guess is this is almost every country, but what keeps us from doing it? There are 6 Reasons I usually see: We're too busy. We're too tired. We lack motivation. We're easily distracted. We forget to read our Bible We don't understand it, so we don't read it. This world is a little…okay, not a little…a lot upside down. They are so morally confused that they no longer know what is right and what is wrong. This world is so upside-down. So, how do we stand against the culture with courage while reaching the people with compassion? It starts with taking a stand. We have to stand strong on the word of God and not change what we believe or hold back from telling others what we believe because we are afraid of what they will think, what they will say, or what they will do. We have to take stand for what is right. In this culture where sin is very much celebrated and where Christianity is not tolerated much anymore. We have to make the choice that we are not going to give in to fear. We are not going to give in to this culture. But we are going to stand strong for the Word of God. God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power (your prayers are powerful, your voice is powerful, your actions are powerful), of love, and of a sound mind…a mind at peace! This week, we are conquering lie #8, our final lie on our Overcoming the Lies of the Enemy series and that is…Acceptance is Love. Actually, the exact opposite is true. While it may seem like when we affirm people’s choices, even though they may not line up with the Word of God, that we are showing them the love of God. That’s the exact opposite. I have done a lot of research on this topic and have heard from several people who are experts in this field and they say that we have to do the exact opposite. We have to speak the Truth of God's Word with love. We have to stand against the culture with courage while still reaching the people with compassion. Before we get started, I want to clarify, I don’t hate anyone. My heart is to help you all and others see how much God really does love you, how much He has an amazing plan for your life, and how much it breaks His heart to see you hurting and in pain. I also know that there are a lot of people who are Christians who don’t act like Christians when it comes to how they treat people walking the LGBTQ Lifestyle. They treat them with such hatred and sometimes even violence, and I hate that. That is not how God would treat anyone. He has such love for them, but also wants them to be free. Most of you have probably heard the song “Amazing Grace.” The lyrics start out by saying, “Amazing grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I’m found…was blind, but now I see.” It’s a beautiful song, however, I have a problem with these lyrics…and it has to do with the phrase, “That saved a wretch like me.” That word wretch means, “someone who is miserable, someone who is worthless.” So, in essense, this song is saying, “Amazing grace how sweet the sound that saved someone miserable and worthless like me.” Miserable and worthless may have been who we were before we met Christ, but that’s not who we are if you given our life to Jesus. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” Have you ever heard someone say, “I’m a Christian murderer.” Or “I’m a Christian thief?” or “I’m a Christian…name a sin.” You might be thinking, well, no, that’s kind of interesting. If you’re a murderer and you keep on killing, how can you really be a Christian. Or If you’re a thief and you have no intentions of stopping, how can you really be a Christian, yet, there are some areas that some Christians say this about. As a Christian, when you gave your life to Jesus, He made you new. He placed the Holy Spirit on the inside of you and now you should desire to want to do better. Now, this doesn’t mean that we’re perfect, but it does mean that we want to do better. If we don’t, then my question is, are we really born again? Have we really made Jesus the Lord of our lives? This also doesn’t mean that we’re going to change everything about us all at once because we gave our lives to Jesus. The Holy Spirit will work on us one thing at a time…and sometimes we don’t even realize something is a sin until God reveals it to us. That’s not what I’m talking about. What I’m talking about is embracing their sin, intentionally sinning and calling themselves a Christian. In 1 Corinthians 5:11, Paul talks about how we need to be cautious about not hanging out with people who identify as a Christian, but yet are okay with embracing their sin. I hear these phrases so often spoken by Christians and especially among Christian teens and young adults…phrases like, “I’m not getting good vibes about this.” Or “Hey, something bad happened, I need you all to send me your positive thoughts and vibes.” I think so many Christians use these phrases because they are such widely used today as a part of our culture. You may be thinking, “Well, I have said these phrases, but I don’t really even know the meaning behind it. It just seems like something nice to say to encourage someone who’s going through something bad.” I love that your heart is to encourage others, but I don’t know about you, but if something happened to me that was crazy, somebody’s “positive thoughts” or “positive vibes” aren’t going to do anything to help my actual situation. So, why do we use the word vibes as Christians? I read this on upsidedownfaith.com, now I don’t know much about them, but just read this article on vibes. They answered this question and I want you to think about whether or not it’s true. They said, “vibes are more socially acceptable than prayer.” And to a lot of people, “Good thoughts are stronger than the power of God.” Check out this week's podcast to learn more! Many Christians have actually adopted both of these beliefs into their beliefs, but do they line up with the Bible? The answer is...no. Actually both of these beliefs have shown to encourage people to turn away from God, not toward Him. The Law of Attraction focuses solely on us and our thoughts and how we are the ones to manifest our future (or create our future). However, God had a purpose and a plan for our lives before the world was even formed. He alone knows the full scope of our plans, not us! Proverbs 19:3 tells us that "The foolishness of a man twists his way, And his heart acts in rage against the LORD." Ouch! I don't know about you, but I don't want to rely on myself. Well, what about mindfulness, that can't be so bad. I mean aren't they practicing mindfulness in schools now in as young as kindergartners. They are and it's actually a pretty scary thing. Listen to the article I found in Christian News Journal about mindfulness in adults...I can't even imagine what it does in kid's lives. It says, "Dr. Willoughby Britton, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Brown University Medical School, a mindfulness practitioner herself, has documented how many who have engaged in Buddhist meditation can become detached from themselves, experiencing dark psychotic hallucinations, feelings of terror, and compulsions to kill themselves." Lie #4-The World Would Be Better Off Without Me Oh girl, if you have ever thought this…I just want you to know that you are so valuable! God placed you in this world on purpose. He has a plan for your life that’s bigger than we can even imagine. The reason many teen girls struggle with this is because the enemy wants nothing more than to take you out. This is a lie because there is no truth in it at all! The world is better because you are here. You are so loved by God! You are accepted by God, chosen by God, and adopted into His family. I talked about this a couple weeks ago, but I’m going to bring it up again…suicide is the 2ndleading cause of death in teens today. On average, 3.703 middle schoolers and high schoolers have made an attempt to take their lives. There are several reasons that we are seeing this, but among those reasons are the lie that we are going to talk about today: “the world would be better off without me.” Maybe it’s that teens have had a rough life. They have been hurt and they feel like they messed up somewhere. Or maybe they just don’t think they can take the pain and hurt anymore…this was me as an 8 year old. Maybe it seems like the world is going to get worse and it’s scary. There are so many reasons why teens can feel this way, but there is hope. If this is you, don’t give up! You are so valuable! Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here! A lot of music is catchy. I get it. When I became a Christian, I was 17 years old and up to that point, I listened to some very secular music…like music not good at all and the reason I did wasn’t because I liked what the lyrics said, I like the way that they sounded. Honestly, I didn’t really think I was even paying attention to the lyrics. I mean, I never actually sat back and said, what does this song say…what does it mean? No, I just sang them and listened to them. The problem with that was, Proverbs 18:21 tells us that death and life are in the power of the tongue, whatever we speak (or sing), even if we’re not paying attention to them, we will eventually see. And if we really watch the things we say or think about, we’ll find that a lot of what we’re singing about is what we’re thinking about. I remember being at a high school/college conference in the beautiful Rocky Mountains of Colorado and the pastor was talking about this very thing…why the music we listen to was important. Many of my friends at the time, me included at first rebelled at the thought…how dare they tell me what music to listen to. It’s not that bad…and then, God got ahold of my heart. I began thinking about the lyrics that I was singing or listening to, and they really started to bother me. These songs weren’t great songs at all. It's not that they had language, because they didn’t. I didn’t care for that even when I wasn’t a Christian, but what they were singing about was all about was the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life: depression-how heartbroken they were, anger, how good looking men were, rebellion. It wasn’t until I started really paying attention to the lyrics that I was singing and listening to that I realized that those were the exact things that I was dealing with as well. I fought off feelings of depression…not thinking that I was good enough for anyone, thinking that everyone who loved me would leave me. I was fighting off anger…anger that I had to fight through life on my own (I hadn’t totally realized that I could rely on God to walk through the fire with me). I had to fight the feeling of if I didn’t have a boyfriend, I was nothing. Then, when I had boyfriends, they were not good at all. I had a couple who were abusive, but always leaving me more broken than before I dated them. After this realization, I wish I could say that I just got rid of all my secular music at that time, but I didn’t. It wasn’t easy for me. I did get rid of some of the ones who I thought were the worst, but I still held on to some of them, because music was something that was a part of who I was. I couldn’t just cut off music and listen to old school hymns all the time—no offense to you who listen to old school hymns. My teenage self, coming from the world, wasn’t into that. In this series, we’re going to be talking about some of the biggest lies that the enemy has been telling teens today, what the truth is, and how you can help those who may be caught up in these lies. Lie #2 that we are going to talk about is, “There are many ways to get to God.” Statistic: Almost half of Christians today believe that even if you don’t believe in Jesus, you can still go to heaven. Statistic: Only 32% of Christians say you can’t go to heaven if you don’t make Jesus the Lord of Your Life. Teen Statistic: 45% of teens in general believe that many religions are true. Only 31% say that there’s only one faith that’s truth. If the lie is that there are many ways to get to God, what is the truth? John 14:6 and this is Jesus speaking says, “I am THE way, and THE truth, and THE life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Notice He didn't say, I am A way, A Truth, and A Life, but instead He said THE. THE implies that there is only one way. Why is Jesus the only way? John 8:31-32 tell us that it’s the Truth (or God’s Word) that we know that makes us free in every area of our lives. This culture is yelling at us…the enemy is not keeping silent. He wants us deceived, because he knows if we are deceived, eventually he can get us to walk away from God once and for all. So, in this series, we’re going to be talking about some of the biggest lies I hear that the enemy and this culture are telling teens today…and a lot of teens are believing them as truth. We’re going to learn what the truth really is and how do we help reach people who may be deceived and encourage them with the Truth. Many teens today are believing these lies as truth and I truly believe that these lies have a direct correlation to why suicide rates among teens today (especially teen girls) is so high…the highest it’s ever been. 22% of teens in high school have had serious thoughts about suicide. Think about this…the average high school today in the United States is 850 students. 22% of 850 students looks like this…187 students in that one high school have had serious thoughts about suicide. 9 percent of those high school students have actually attempted to take their lives. That 9% looks like this, out of that same high school, 76.5 students have tried to take their lives. Ladies, this is heart breaking to me…and not okay. God has a purpose and a plan for every single one of your lives. He thoughts about every detail about you before you were born and it pleased Him to create you! There are several reasons that the suicide rate is so high among teens and we’re going to be talking about them over the course of the next several weeks. Ladies, be sure to share these episodes with your friends. It can be the encouragement and hope that they have been looking for. This week, we are going to be talking about Lie #1 which is: Follow your heart. Do what feels right. In these past several weeks, I have heard so much talk about this, which is why it’s number one. It doesn’t mean it’s any worse than the other lies…a lie is a lie and it is not truth, no matter what it is. For many of us, right now, it’s summertime and summertime for a lot of us can be binge watching our favorite tv show, playing video games, going to the pool. Let’s face it, in the summertime….well, even during the school year, we can become complacent...or a little bit lazy in our walk with God. No matter where you are with your walk with God...whether you're on fire or maybe you've been a little lazy, I want to encourage you to take this little test…don’t worry, it’s only 3 questions long. And before we get started, I want to share that I have to do a mental check up quite often to make sure I’m not falling into complacency either. None of us, including me are immune. 1. Do you follow Jesus only when it’s convenient or when it’s popular or do you follow Jesus even when it’s not convenient or when you’re around people who don’t believe in Him? 2. When you’re praying, are you only praying about what Jesus can do for you or are you also taking time to pray about what He wants you to do for Him? 3. Are you a fan of Jesus or are you a follower of Jesus? What do I mean by that? A true follower of anyone, doesn’t just take the time to learn from them, but they try to live like them. Imagine you played soccer (you might) and your all-time favorite professional soccer player came up to you and asked you if they could mentor, you. Show you some skills and help you become that top professional soccer player like they are. Would you just listen to them and never apply anything they told you or would you try to do the things that they told you to do. Of course, you would do them, because you want to be the best you can be, right? The same thing is true with Jesus. If we want to win in every area of our lives, we don’t need to just hear what God is saying to us through the Bible, we need to apply it to our lives as well! Being a follower of Jesus will mean that there will be times that you will need to give things up in order to follow Him, but I want you to know that when God has you give something up, it’s always because He has something better in store for you. For example, maybe you’ve been a part of your school competition choir, but God has been placing it on your heart to step down. You can’t understand why He would do that, but you choose to listen. After you step down, the youth pastor comes up to you and starts talking to you about being a part of the youth praise team. Because you obeyed, now that time has been freed up in your schedule, you can step into God’s calling for your life. Now that was just an example, I cannot say that’s going to be the case every time. But this is how God works. If He asks you to give something up, it’s because He wants to take you to the next level with something else. Complacency is a place that we can easily slip into if we’re not cautious. Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here! On this week's Ask Me Anything episode, Kayla asks, "What is my next step for a calling in ministry?" I love this question, because I felt like God was calling me to ministry in my teen years as well, so I’m excited to answer this question. Now, for those of you who maybe don’t quite feel that you’re called into ministry, I want to encourage you to listen to this anyway, because what we’re going to talk about will apply to you as well. So, Kayla wants to know what her next step should be for a calling in ministry. So, let’s answer these questions first, what does it mean to be called? And is everyone called? Your calling is your purpose. So, the answer to the second question is yes, everyone is called. Every single one of you has a purpose. Ephesians 2:10 tells us that we are God’s workmanship, His masterpiece. When we gave our lives to Jesus, we were born again so that we could fulfill God’s purpose for our life. He prepared our purpose before the world even began, so that we could walk in that purpose, living the good life which God prearranged and made ready for us to live! Jeremiah 1:5 tells us that before we were in our mother’s womb, God knew everything about us, approved us and then called us to a purpose. Now, is everyone called into the ministry? That answer is yes…and no. Does God have a ministry for each of our lives? Yes. We are all called to share the Good News of Jesus wherever it is we are called. We will make a difference in what it is God has called us to do. Now, will that be in full-time ministry, maybe, but maybe not. And if not, that doesn’t make your purpose any less important than someone who is called into full-time ministry. God has a different plan for each of us that fits so uniquely together in one giant puzzle. We need every piece of the puzzle in order to complete what God has called us to do. Just a hint while you’re discovering your calling, your calling is going to have something to do with your uniqueness. Many times, we look at ourselves and all of the ways we are different from others and think that we are flawed…that there’s something wrong with us. But it’s in those things that make you different that will help you discover your purpose. We shouldn’t see our uniqueness as something bad. God created us that way on purpose for our purpose. Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here! What does it mean to go all in? It means to be fully committed, to be fully persuaded. So what does it mean to go all in with God? It means that we are fully committed and fully persuaded that we are going to live our lives for God. I remember being a senior in high school and a friend of mine invited me to church and hearing the message that God loved me and that message kind of blew me away because on the inside I'm thinking, wait, God loves me, but nobody loves me. See, growing up I grew up in a very rough home and I didn't know what love was, never heard the words I love you. Never received a hug. I didn't know what love was. I had grown up with a thought process that nobody loved me...that everybody who was supposed to love me, didn't love me. And so when I heard that God loved me, that He really loved me, that He sent his Son to die for me personally, it rocked my world. And I remember as a brand new Christian that I wanted to live for God, but I had no idea that I could go all in with God. I didn't even know that was such a thing. I didn't really know that I was supposed to read my Bible. I kind of did here and there, but I didn't really know what I was doing. I didn't really understand how to pray. I thought every time I prayed that I was just talking to myself and I'm like, is God really even hearing me? I remember being in college and we went on this mission trip to Mexico and I remember waking up one morning and it was freezing because when you're in the desert it gets really cold overnight, even though it's super hot during the daytime. And I woke up, I was freezing. I didn't wanna get out of my sleeping bag. So I just sat there with God and it just hit me: God really loves me! I received a revelation of God's love like I had never had before. And it was in that moment, I decided I was going all in with God. But in order to go all in with God, there were some things that I needed to learn, and I didn't know this at the time. I had to get a revelation of how much God loved me. I had to learn. How to know God for myself, not just what other people were sharing with me, which is okay if they're speaking the Bible, but I had to learn to know God for myself. And then the last thing that I had to learn was I had to learn how to develop a compassion for other people. Once I had a revelation of those three areas, it's then that I was able to go all in with God and He transformed my life. Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here! On this week's Ask Me Anything Episode, Ashley asks, "How can I forgive myself and heal after confessing my sin to God?" This is such a good question. When we know that we’ve messed up, it can be easy for any of us to hold onto that guilt, sometimes for years, and it just eats away at us on the inside. One amazing thing about our God is that Proverbs 28:13 tells us that when we confess our sins, we find mercy. That word mercy means that from God, we will find forgiveness, compassion, and love. What amazing God we have. Instead of turning to us and yelling at us or telling us how He can’t believe that bad choices that we’ve made, He turns to us and says, “Daughter, I love you! I love you too much to leave you broken and where you are. When you walk with Me, you will find freedom in every area of your life!” That forgiveness, that compassion, and mercy is great, but sometimes it’s not so easy to forgive ourselves for the things that we’ve done. When we hold onto unforgiveness toward ourselves and we hold onto guilt, it causes us to hate ourselves. It causes us to be angry and irritable. It causes us to be insecure and to doubt our choices. I don’t speak on this because I’m some kind of medical professional…I am not. I can speak on this, though, because I have been there. All of the bad choices that I made, even if it was something as small as I forgot to finish my homework and now, I was rushing to get it done before class…I would pile all these choices up in my mind and beat myself up mentally. How could I do that? What was wrong with me? It wasn’t until I finally gave all that over to God that I was able to become free. A lot of times that guilt that we carry isn’t from something small like not finishing our homework, but a lot of times it comes from something we did or that was done to us that really rocked our world. How do we overcome the guilt of something like that? How do we forgive ourselves? Ashley, I’m so thankful that you asked this question. All right, so this week’s question comes from Zoe. Zoe says, “I know that God is there, but sometimes it feels like there’s no hope for anything. When my dad was placed in the hospital a few years ago I had lost all my faith. I still haven’t totally regained faith, but how can I? How can I have a better relationship with him?” Zoe, thank you so much for asking this question. Sometimes things happen in life that we don’t understand. We thought one thing and another thing happened. However, I want you to know that God is not our problem when bad things happen, He is our solution. There is a very real devil who wants to destroy us. John 10:10 tells us that the thief (or the devil) is the one that comes to steal, to kill and to destroy, but Jesus has come that we may have life and life more abundantly. If it steals, if it kills or it destroys…it’s from the devil. If it gives life, it’s from God. God is there for you, always. 12 different times throughout the whole Bible, God tells us that He will never leave us or forsake us…which means He will never turn His back on you. He loves you so, so much! It pains God to see us hurting. Psalm 34:18 tells us that the Lord is near to those who have a broken heart. Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here! This past weekend many of us celebrated Easter or the Resurrection of Jesus. As I think back to Good Friday and what the Resurrection really means to me, I can’t help but be overwhelmed with God’s goodness and His love. When we think back to the Garden of Gethsemane…the Garden where Jesus was praying before He was betrayed by Judas and was brought in to be crucified…Jesus had gone away with His closest disciples to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. As He was praying, the weight of what He was about to do laid so heavily on His shoulders that He actually sweat out blood. He was under such pressure that as He was sweating blood He cried out to God and in Luke 22 verse 42, says, “Father, if you are willing, remove the cup from Me.” Or in otherwards, if there is any other way, I would gladly take it. Why would He pray that? Jesus knew the Old Testament and knew that He was about to be arrested. He knew that He was about to be stripped of all His clothes and made fun of. He knew that He was about to be beaten beyond recognition. We read in Isaiah 52:14 that Jesus didn’t even look human—a ruined face, disfigured past recognition.” But even with that, that wasn’t the worst part for Him. He was willing to do that for us. The part that He really felt the pressure of was that He was about to take on the sins of the world. Think about this…Jesus walked this earth perfectly. He never sinned, never messed up. He was perfection Himself and now He was about to take on every single sin that had ever taken place…and every single sin that would ever take place even in the future. He took everyone one of your mistakes and everyone one of my mistakes on His shoulders. Jesus so despised sin, but was willing to take it on so that He could give you His perfection. Why do you need His perfection? Because God is perfect, the only way we can make it into heaven is if we are perfect. Well, I don’t know about you, but I know that I am far from perfect. I mean…have you ever even rolled your eyes at your parents? Or maybe even talked bad about someone…even if they deserved it? Even with just those small things, it would mean that there is no way that we could make it into heaven. If your life was a test and even if you got everything 99.9% right, it’s still not 100%, therefore we can’t make it in. That’s a problem for everyone. Romans 3:23 tells us that all of us have messed up…even if it was just once and we all fall short of the glory of God…from His perfection. With knowing just that…that doesn’t give us a whole lot of hope for the future. However, Romans 5:8 tells us that while we were still out there sinning, Christ died for us. Romans 10:9-19 tell us that all we have to do to receive His free gift is confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord and believe in our hearts that God raised Him from the dead and we are saved! Our question this week comes from Finley. Finley Asks: I am a new Christian and trying to get close to God, but I feel like there are so many rules to follow to be a Christian and I feel like I’m letting God down when I mess up (like forgetting to read the Bible and pray). And every time I do something wrong, I feel so guilty. I pray and pray. I know God still loves me. Can you help me? Finley is a new Christian…which, let’s take a second and celebrate that! Yay! Finley, I am telling you, this is the absolute best decision you will ever make in life! Now, In your question, there were several different topics we are going to cover in this week's episode: Is Christianity really about a bunch of rules? When I mess up, am I really letting God down? Why do I feel so guilty? Can I overcome this? Does God still love me even when I mess up? Spoiler Alert: the answer is YES!! Now really quick, I want to talk to those of you who are new Christians. I want to give you 5 things that you can do to really begin to grow stronger in your walk with God. Make it a habit to read your Bible daily…and if you miss a day, don’t beat yourself up, just start again the next day! Start a personal prayer time between you and God. Prayer is not a formal, strict thing. It’s a conversation with God on a personal level-talk to Him just like you would talk to your friends. Make sure that you're going to a good church (meaning a Bible based church) where you can grow in the things of God! If you aren't able to go to a good church, because you don't have one near you or your parents aren't Christians, here is the link to my church...Joy Church...that you can check out. Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here! In Ephesians 6:11, Paul tells us to put on the whole armor of God so that we may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. That word wiles in that verse means mind games or schemes. The enemy is playing mind games with us to pull us away from God to where we feel distant from Him or where we don’t feel like we have a purpose or that we don’t measure up. Those are all lies…mind games that the enemy plays with us. Have you ever seen the part of the cartoon Looney Tunes that has Wiley Cayote and Road Runner. Basically, Wiley Cayote is like the devil here. His number one tactic is to get Road Runner off of the right road and onto a road that will lead to destruction. So, he does these different things to get Road Runner to get off the right road. For example, the road that Road Runner is on ends in a cliff that could lead him to destruction. Wiley Cayote doesn’t want Road Runner to switch to the right road, so he takes a big canvas and paints a picture on it making it look like the road continues on. However, because Road Runner is on the right path, he avoids destruction every time. This is the same game that the enemy is trying to play with us. He wants to try to pull us off of the right road and onto a road that leads to destruction. That is the whole reason he uses distractions. It is a mind game that he’s playing with us. Now, last week, again, we talked about distractions, but this week, we’re going to talk about how to stay focused and in order to do so, we are going to look at the life of Nehemiah 5 Ways to Stay Focused Know that your victory comes from God! Know that there was power in both praying and staying on guard. Know that God has a plan for your life and that your life is important. Don't waste your time fighting battles you weren't meant to fight. to do. Don't quit! At the end of 2022, God was showing me some pretty amazing things that He wanted me to do this year. I was super excited about all that God was going to do…and then January 1st came, and wow did the enemy really ramp up his plan to distract me! I mean, literally from the very first day of January, the enemy has been trying his best to stop me from stepping into all that God has for my life. And I know I’m not the only one. I talk to so many of you telling me the same thing. That distractions this year have been unreal. Whether it be family challenges, social media, our phones or even school…it seems like so many of us are facing more distractions this year than we have in the past. But did you know that there is a reason for that? Did you know that it’s part of the enemy’s plan for our lives to distract us. The thing about the devil is this…the more we focus on growing in our relationship with God or doing what it is that God is calling us to do, the more the enemy is going to throw distractions our way. Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here! Last week I answered the question, "How Do I Become a Strong Christian?" So this week, I am answering the second question that was asked, "How Do I Hear from God?" As I shared last week, the number one was that we hear from God is through His Word. This is why I so encourage you to make sure you are getting into the Bible every single day! John 10:27 tells us that when we make it a habit to get into the Bible, we will know what God's voice sounds like and we won't be led astray by the enemy. Another way that we hear God speak to us is through our hearts. This is not as common as when He speaks to us through His Word, however, this is how God spoke to me when I knew without a shadow of a doubt that God called me to serve teens. A third way that God can speak to us is through other people...maybe your pastor or your youth pastor...or even through this podcast, God might be speaking directly to you. Maybe you've been talking to God about something and you get your answer through one of us or someone else. God is so good! Now, I do highly caution you about people who call themselves prophets or say to you, "God told me (fill in the blank). A lot of these people aren't hearing from God. Now, some are legitimate and God really did share with them to share something with you, but most are not. So, if someone says that to you or your watching a video that says something like that, ask yourself these two questions: Have I been talking to God about this or has He been talking to me about it? Does is line up with the Bible? God will never guide you outside of the Bible. Another way God speaks to us is through peace. If you have given your life to Jesus and you have gone all in with God, He has given you the Holy Spirit that lives on the inside of you. John 16:13 and this is Jesus speaking, He said, “When the Spirit of Truth comes (that’s the Holy Spirit), He will guide you into all Truth, for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears from God, He will speak, and He will declare to you the things that are to come. The Holy Spirit is speaking to you and will guide you with peace! How do I actually get closer to Him? So many people have talked about how they hear God or that they are called by God, but how do I hear from Him? These are all great questions that I know many of you may be asking yourself. I love this question, because it means that your heart is in the right place and any time you reach out to God, He will always meet you right where you’re at! So, if you reach out to God and ask Him, how do I grow stronger in my walk with You, Lord? He will meet you right where you’re at and show you. Now, He may be showing you through this podcast. He may be showing you through a message your pastor gives at church. He may be showing you through modeling it in the life of someone who is a couple steps further along in their faith as you are. This week, I'm going to answer the question, "How do I become a Strong Christian? and next week we'll talk about "how do you hear from God?" So, how do you become a strong Christian? Normally, I only do one Ask Me Anything episode a month, but I loved this question that was sent to me and because we honestly don’t hear much about this topic at all, I thought it would be a great time to talk about it. Rowan asks, “I need to explain to my Christian friends that it’s important to honor your parents but I don’t know how to do it. In the Bible, in Exodus 20:12 it says, “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.” But what is honor and what does it mean to honor our parents? According to the United States Army, they define honor as: a matter of carrying out, acting, and living the values of: respect (holding others in high esteem or regard) duty (commitment) loyalty (faithfulness and devotion) selfless service (concern and compassion for those around them) integrity (being honest and showing consistency to strong moral values) and personal courage (bravery) in everything you do. So what does it mean to honor your parents? Are you supposed to honor your parents even if they don't deserve it? If so, how do you honor your parents when they don't deserve it? How do you help your friends honor their parents? These are all questions we talk about in this week's episode of the UncommonTEEN Podcast. We are an expert at picking out all the things we don’t like about ourselves, but when it comes to finding things we like, it’s almost impossible. However, did you know that God created you just the way you are on purpose, and He saw you as something good! Ecclesiastes 3: 11 tells us that God has made everything beautiful in its time and that He has a purpose for your life! He wants to use you to do something big with your life. He wants to use you to be a world-changer! The way that you were made fits right into what it is that God created you to do. Ephesians 2:10 says that you are God’s masterpiece. He had a plan for your life before the world was even formed. Way before you were ever born, He thought about every detail about you and said, “I want her so she can use who she is to shine the light of Jesus in this world. You are unique! Which means you are a one of a kind. There is no one in this world like you…and that is an amazing thing. When you try to become someone you’re not, because you’re different, it’s frustrating. The best we can ever be when we try to be like someone else is second best. Embrace who it is that God created you to be. Yes, there are things we need to work on and grow in. There is nothing you can do to get God to love you any more than He already does. He doesn’t need you to be perfect. There isn’t anything that you can do to get God to love you any less that He does! He loves you, because that’s who He is! His love for us is so good that we can’t even understand it. His love has no conditions…it has no breaking point. It doesn’t matter if we were the worst criminal on the face of the planet, He would still love us. Think about it. John 3:16 tells us that God so loved the world…all of the people who ever walked the face of this planet and everyone who is yet to be here…He loved us all so much that He would send His Son, Jesus to die for us so that we could know how much He truly loves us. When Jesus went to the cross, He willingly gave up His life for people who hated Him. Who made fun of Him and beat Him. Who killed others who would choose to believe in Him. He willingly gave up His life, because of His great love toward us! So many times, we find it hard that God would love even us. We may say, “Yeah, well you don’t know what I did.” Or “You don’t know what they did to me. I’m broken. I’m unlovable. There’s no way that even God could love me.” However, when God looks at us…He’s not thinking those things at all. He’s not coming to you with an attitude of, “What did you do this time?” or “Are you kidding me? You really messed up this time!” No! Instead, He looks at you with love and compassion and when you mess up He says, “My daughter, if you only knew how valuable you are…you wouldn’t feel the need to make choices that hurt you.” “My daughter if you only knew how much I love you, you wouldn’t feel like you are unlovable and broken, but you would see that you are so loved. I’ve never stopped loving you!” Ladies, God loves you! He will never give up on you. He is committed to you! He is faithful!
