On this episode I chatted with Bill Price about his new book, At War with Corruption. At War with Corruption began as a biography of Bill Price, the U.S. attorney and Republican candidate for high office who spearheaded prosecutions in the most pervasive public corruption spectacle in American history: the Oklahoma county commissioner scandal. Price’s determination to root out the rascals and restore faith in governance branded him as the biggest corruption buster in the state’s history. Price’s career in law and politics serves as a portal into corruption in Oklahoma. Episodes in that narrative include land swindles (soonerism) at the dawn of Oklahoma history; theft of Native Americans’ property and steamrolling of their cultures that reached a nadir in the Osage murders; the Supreme Court scandal of 1964–65; Leo Winters’ alleged misuse of state taxes (what was the treasurer doing with the people’s money?); Governor David Hall’s trial and conviction on charges of extortion; prosecutions of drug syndicates, Penn Square Bank insiders, and Oklahoma Corporation Commissioners on the take; and the systemic bribery in county governance that inspired this book. Price shatters the myth that Oklahomans have been uniquely tolerant of, and susceptible to, corruption. He blames structural flaws and inadequate legislation for tempting law-abiding citizens to heed the call of their darker angels. Although Price failed in his gubernatorial and congressional campaigns, he has influenced policy through philanthropies that set a high bar for civic engagement. At War with Corruption reveals the sinister side of human nature. Yet its intention is not to depress, but rather to uplift and to show what is possible when public servants work together to frame effective laws and promote justice. On this episode I chatted with Bob Burke, born in Broken Bow, Oklahoma, has written more historical non-fiction books than anyone else in history. He earned a law degree from Oklahoma City University and received an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from OCU and a BA in journalism from the University of Oklahoma. Burke’s more than 130 books have won many awards, including three Pulitzer Prize nominations. Burke is a member of the Oklahoma Hall of Fame, the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame, and the Oklahoma Historians Hall of Fame. He is father to Robert, Amy, and Cody, stepfather to Natalie, Lauren, and Calli, and grandfather to Nathan, Jon, Ridge, Fallon, Greyson, Mia, Emerson, Sutton, Charlie, and Cameron. He and his wife, Chimene, live in Oklahoma City where he practices law and writes books. Singer / Ventriloquist Darci Lynne is the youngest contestant to ever win NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” garnering over 67M views on AGT’s YouTube and the most votes for a final performance in the history of the show. She won the hearts of America with her sweetheart disposition and undeniable talent. In 2018, she kicked off her national tour selling out her first headlining family friendly show in just six minutes, continually adding shows to meet the overwhelming demand. On the heels of a record-breaking 2019, the gifted Singer/Ventriloquist Darci Lynne has kicked off her 2020 “Fresh Out of The Box” National Tour where she is sharing her passion for performance and bringing her enchanting show from New York to Nevada. Growing up in Oklahoma, Darci has always been close to her family and relies on their support and encouragement. In her younger years, Darci participated in talent-based pageants to overcome her shyness. She was soon introduced to the art of ventriloquism and decided to try it out for herself. A graduate of Oklahoma State University, Chip earned his bachelor’s degree in pre-law in 1980 and minored in philosophy. On this episode I chatted with Farmtruck & Azn from the TV show Street Outlaws. It's been aa decade since the first season aired on the discovery channel. We talk about street racing scene in OKC before the show and after the show. How they both met cruising Route 66 in Bethany and how they've built their brand and audience into their own show on discovery called the Farmtruck & Azn show. FARMTRUCK Farmtruck and AZN are the dynamic duo from Street Outlaws who race a ’70 Chevy Long Bed Truck. Featuring rusty paint, a camper shell, dents and a “ZZZZZ” license plate, this race-equipped truck is the ultimate sleeper. Farmtruck first got interested in trucks from riding in his father’s 1956 Ford pickup when he was 12. He would stand between the fastest cars on Route 66 with a flashlight above his head to start the races. Sean had a series of trucks that he messed with but never had a winner till he answered an ad that read, “Very fast truck for sale” in an Auto Trader Magazine. The Farmtruck is a 1970 C-10 Chevy Pickup Truck and it is deceptively fast! Farmtruck and AZN enjoy list races, but are more interested in “fishing.” Fishing means luring unsuspecting marks into racing for money by complementing their cars and downplaying the Farmtruck’s power. AZN does the smack talking and Farmtruck does the driving. These two are goof balls, who street race for the adrenaline rush and satisfaction they get from catching others by surprise. Suzy Lu is their newest and cutest addition to the team and loyal follows them around in all their adventures. AZN AZN is Farmtruck’s best friend for over a decade, AZN has been the one to handle the smack talk while Farmtruck wins the races. AZN always has Farmtruck's back but recently he’s been looking to get behind the wheel of his own ride. After a failed attempt at racing lawn mowers it looks like AZN may have found a new sleeper to call his own. “The Dung Beetle,” a Volkswagen Beetle that looks like ‘Dung’ on the outside, but underneath the hood is a 400HP Turbo-charged CB Performance engine. On this episode I chatted with Dr Kayse Shrum, President of Oklahoma State University. Dr. Kayse Shrum as the 19th president and the first woman to lead the University. Dr. Shrum has served as president of OSU's Center for Health Sciences (OSU-CHS) since 2013, and her selection at the time made her the youngest and first female president and dean of a medical school in the state of Oklahoma. Dr. Shrum trained and served rural Oklahoma as a pediatrician before beginning her academic work at OSU-CHS after current OSU President Burns Hargis appointed her to lead the medical school. A native of Coweta, Oklahoma, Dr. Shrum is a fervent champion of rural health and primary care medicine and has made the creation of a sustainable, rural primary care physician pipeline a top priority. She launched innovative high school recruiting programs like Operation Orange and Blue Coat to White Coat, created the Rural Medical Track curriculum and expanded the number of residency training programs in rural Oklahoma by securing support from the Oklahoma Legislature, Oklahoma Health Care Authority and Oklahoma Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust. Her long list of awards and accolades includes being named The Journal Record's Woman of the Year in 2019. Dr. Shrum and her husband Darren still actively farm near Coweta. He played baseball his entire childhood, choosing to go to play college ball at Southwestern Christian University. On this episode I chatted with CEO of Stability Cannabis Denver Kitch. Denver grew up in Yukon and was a part of the very well known 2000's graduating class of Miller Baseball. Turning down a draft pick in Highschool he headed to OU with the hopes of turning Baseball into a career. Which he did until an injury and lack of love for the game brought him back to Oklahoma. Fortunately getting into real estate helped channel his people skills into a successful business. However, in late 2018 he and a past work colleague started talking about the Cannabis business. With the pending legality in Oklahoma Cannabis was a big business opportunity for investors. Denver already having an established real estate business didn't want to change careers but entertained the idea of investing. Life had other plans and quickly he saw himself as CEO of his own operation having built a fantastic team of business savvy Oklahomans, ready to opening their own grow operation. Fast forward three years and they sold half of the company at an 88million dollar valuation... Thats 44million after just 3 years for 50% of the business! On this episode I chatted with longtime friend Tim Braaten about his journey into coaching. Tim is currently the Assistant Golf Coach at ORU. Tim grew up in the Tulsa area, moved to OKC to go to university at Southern Nazarene to play golf. Which is where we met. Tim has a love of history and baseball so golf really wasn't on the radar until he was offered a spot on the team by our Hall of Fame Coach Steve Hulsey. Sadly for Tim his eligibility ran out before he finished college so he had the opportunity to coach baseball at Bethany Highschool right across the street, this led him to SCU as a college baseball coach and RD of one of the dorms. During this time the SCU golf coaching position opened up and with some thought Tim took the job. Looking back this is where Tim's golf coaching kicks off. SCU's golf program was unknown at this point, to the point that people literally didn't think they had a golf program. In three years Tim took the SCU golf program from unknown to the first national championship in school history. incredible achievement for him and the team of guys he assembled. Excited to return the following year, little did he know that others had taken notice and a position at D1 ORU in Tulsa ( Tim's Home City ) had opened up. As far as timing goes, it was terrible. The week before school starts Tim takes the ORU position as Assistant Golf Coach and has been pouring his heart and soul into the team ever since. In this podcast we talk about the timing of everything, the subtle things in Tim's story that led him to coaching golf and the work he does everyday to make him and his players better. As a friend I am extremely proud of Tim's coaching achievements, but in no way am I surprised by his results because of his dedication to improvement and love for the game. On this episode I chatted with Amir. Amir is from Iran and has aa fascinating story and journey to Oklahoma. He was a refugee who emigrated to the US at age 11 from Iran. Converted to Christianity. Met his wife. Was working as a photographer at a local paper when she fell ill with MS. They learned how diet could contribute to her wellness and started their first restaurant in order to feed her and anyone else who wanted to be a health nut with them. They later realized they wanted to grow they are she's doing well managing her MS well. After 14 years and eight locations, with a ninth on the way, the Health Nut Cafe has changed its name to Bee Healthy Cafe. Founders Cindy and Amir Alavi and company Chief Executive Officer Cody Pepper announced the change last week along with plans to switch from sole ownership to a franchise-ownership model. Thompson began his career with the state as policy director for former Oklahoma Senate President Pro Tempore Brian Bingman. During that four-year service, Thompson read every bill submitted to the senate, met with citizens from across the state and learned how to work with others to achieve shared goals. Since 2004, Brett Brinkley McPherson has been professionally styling Oklahoma and Texas. Brett is an Oklahoma born and bred designer and stylist, who grew up on a ranch in western Oklahoma with a dream of owning her own Interior Design firm. She has spent her lifetime cultivating her God-given gift and her own personal style, which includes showcasing her native roots with panache. Design is who she is. On this episode I chatted with Celestial Cycles owner Sheridan Marquardt. Soon to be celebrating 20 years of Celestial Cycles. Next year is the year of the Tiger and as you will find out, the Tiger has a role and will be making its way into certain items of clothing in the store. Celestial Cycles started as a way for owner Sheridan Marquardt to keep his love for cycling alive. Growing up in OKC, Sheridan, like most kids, rode his bike all over town, and he raced BMX throughout childhood. While at UCO, he discovered mountain biking, racing, and a life-long passion for bicycles. In order to support his passion, he took a job at a bike shop, and then another one, until he decided to open his own business in 1999. Drawing inspiration from Celestial Seasonings, a tea company, of all places, that sponsored competitive women’s cycling in the 80’s, Sheridan founded Celestial Cycles. Originally founded as a frame-building business, Sheridan sought to emulate the commitment to and passion for cycling demonstrated by this unlikely namesake. Within a year he had his sights set on expanding his operations, and in 2002, the business transitioned to a full-service bike shop. On this episode I chatted with FMX rider Anthony Murray. Anthony is a professional freestyle motocross athlete and a motocross social media influencer brought on by his notoriety in the MX world. Anthony is currently residing in Stillwater, OK but learned how to ride at an early age behind the home he grew up in, in the hills of Canon City, CO. Early in his career Mr. Murray competed internationally in 5 different countries leading up to a big win at the XPilots comp by Monster Energy which thrust him into a top competitor spot in the sport of Motocross. After receiving his first dirt bike at 11 years old, Anthony then spent most of his free time riding and experimenting with his new toy. His back yard was basically an oasis of rocks, dirt, and trails that helped him gain mad skills in a short period of time. After a while, learning to take jumps and fly through the air with little effort is when his passion for dirt biking really took off. This led him to attend the Dew Tour as a spectator which then solidified his dream to become a professional freestyle rider. Putting in some time on his bike, it only took him 2-years to successfully land his first backflip on dirt after visiting the Dew Tour. The excitement from that magical flip at age 16 set the catalyst for his future career that we see now. Moving to California soon after his high school graduation with nothing more than a suitcase, and a pickup that hauled his dirt bike he was ready.
