On this episode I chatted with Mike Shepherd of Shepherd Oil in Blackwell Oklahoma. "Shepherd Oil Company was founded in 1949 by Robert F. Shepherd, starting with a service station in Blackwell, Oklahoma. Mr. Shepherd built the business into a bulk wholesale jobbership with Champlin Refining and continued operating a state of the art service station thru the mid 1960’s. He later purchased a Phillips 66 bulk jobbership, expanding into wholesale deliveries to the oilfields, agricultural, and industrial markets in northern Oklahoma. In 1974 a son, Mike Shepherd, purchased stock in the company and became a partner in the business. Shepherd oil evolved into the self-serve and convenience store business in the late seventies. They continued growing the marketership through a network of dealerships. In 2001, Mike’s son Brindan entered the business and currently heads up all C-store operations. Brindan is actively pursuing new growth by expanding the retail footprint of the business. In 2007 Zack Zimmerman, Mike’s son-in-law, entered the business and currently heads up all wholesale operations. Zack brings into the business new opportunities to ensure future growth of the wholesale and common carrier business. On this episode I chatted with return guest ( episode 30 ) Jeremie Kubicek. Jeremie is a business builder and has a fascinating path back to Oklahoma. Most of which we covered in out first interview in 2018! Jeremie began his career fresh out of college, by starting the Moscow Economic School and a marketing consulting business in Moscow, Russia with a group of colleagues. After moving back to the US, Jeremie began a successful role as VP, Marketing with a family company in distribution. After the company sold, Jeremie went to work for the venture capital firm that bought them helping assimilate the roll up of companies around the United States. On this episode I chatted to musician Donovan Funk. Donovan creates alternative rock inspired by Kings of Leon, Jeff Buckley, Tom Petty, and Tor Miller; both in lyricism and musical expression. He started playing guitar at an early age, learning classic rock riffs that he heard while forming early memories with his dad. After his teen years he rediscovered his love for the instrument and began building songs based around what he could learn from the internet. Donovan Funk is currently working on an album in his home studio writing and recording original compositions to share with the world via streaming services and live performances. Using intuition and classical training from school orchestra, Donovan Funk is able to include a multitude of instrument to his productions such as bass, drums, keyboard, and cello. On this episode I chatted with Jim Connelly about his family business which was established in 1907. The company was founded by Andy and Morgan Connelly in September 1907 in El Reno, Oklahoma. The brothers emigrated from County Cork, Ireland to Oklahoma. In fact, they came to Oklahoma just before it became a state (Oklahoma became the 46th state in the United States November 16, 1907). The Rock Island Railroad has its headquarters in El Reno and at that time the railroad was the major means of transportation. They constructed many brick streets, bridges, and did work for the Rock Island Railroad. Connelly Paving Company constructed the first highway in the state of Oklahoma from Bartlesville to Dewey, which was approximately 6.5 miles. Since the days back in El Reno, Connelly Paving moved a few times and currently headquarters in Oklahoma City. Connelly Paving works with general contractors all around the central Oklahoma region. We are a fifth generation family business that has operated within the central Oklahoma region for over 100 years. On this episode I chatted with owner of Stonecloud Brewing Joel Irby. Joel has a great story. He left Oklahoma for Colorado to study and fell in love with craft beer and the mountain life. After graduating Joel took a job at a brewery and dove into his passion. 9 years later he returned to OKC with an opportunity to occupy a historic building and open his own taproom. On this episode I chatted with Tulsa native Garrett Mills. Garrett played football for Jenks Highschool before committing to TU where his father played. His Junior / Senior year he realized that the NFL was a possibility and set his sights on the draft. Drafted by The Patriots Garretts NFL career had begun. After years in the league and a few different teams Garrett decided it was time to step away. He was accepted into the Kellogs School of Management and after graduating moved to Dallas to work for Goldman Sachs. Not enjoying his job as much as he thought, his friend and founder of RibCrib offered him the opportunity to move back to Tulsa and work for them. Garrett is now the CEO of RibCrib, in his time they have launched a new concept called Society Burger and plan to launch a Taco concept soon. A business created to raise money for their church and love for their community. My old files are filled with golf courses I drew starting at the age of three. I read every book on the topic I can find, and study/walk golf courses religiously. In 2011, I started in the industry as an apprentice to a golf architect in my home town. After learning the basic principles of routing and how to read topography maps, I wanted to get my hands dirty. Over the next couple of years I worked on various maintenance and construction crews to learn the mechanics and operations of a golf course. Determined to continue my dream, I went to Oklahoma State University to get a degree in Landscape Architecture. From there I was able to acquire internships with golf architects around the country. During these experiences I was exposed to all facets of the design process and different project types including renovations, restorations, and new courses. In February of 2019 I started my own design firm and we are currently building our first 18-hole golf course (Park Mammoth Golf Club). About: We are mixed media artists and have been collaborating together as Art Fusion Studio for about 19 years. We enjoy working in many materials including glass, metal, wood and acrylic fabrication. We are a husband and wife team with different and complementary abilities that allow us to design and fabricate very unique art. We are both drawn to mixing materials that highly contrast each other, like glass and concrete, or acrylic and rusted steel. This dichotomy of these materials leads you to examine each more closely, to notice the natural blend of colors in the rust and the complexity of reflections on a polished surface. In particular we love to include an element of transparency by creating openings or adding glass, so that lighting, natural or otherwise, becomes an important part of the sculpture. The transparency also adds depth as the layers of construction are revealed and the landscape on the other side becomes a part of the design. On this episode I chatted with Rico Smith founder of 46th State Candle Company. Rico is born and raised in OKC. He developed a love of politics from a young age and set his heart on that profession, to make a change in the world. Rico studied at OCCC before transferring into OU. Graduated with a Political Science degree and then packed his bags for GW in Washington. Rico developed his interest in candles after needing to make his apartment his own. He had his Oklahoma set work hung on the walls but nothing really smelled like home.
