Ep 344This is Donovan Funk
On this episode I chatted to musician Donovan Funk. Donovan creates alternative rock inspired by Kings of Leon, Jeff Buckley, Tom Petty, and Tor Miller; both in lyricism and musical expression. He started playing guitar at an early age, learning classic rock riffs that he heard while forming early memories with his dad. After his teen years he rediscovered his love for the instrument and began building songs based around what he could learn from the internet. Donovan Funk is currently working on an album in his home studio writing and recording original compositions to share with the world via streaming services and live performances. Using intuition and classical training from school orchestra, Donovan Funk is able to include a multitude of instrument to his productions such as bass, drums, keyboard, and cello. You can also find Donovan Funk performing at festivals, markets, and venues in Oklahoma City with a set that starts out mellow and builds to a screaming finale. Playing covers and originals with supporting members Christian Pearson on bass and his brother Conner Funk on drums. Ep 341This is Connelly Paving - The Oldest Paving Company in the State of Oklahoma
On this episode I chatted with Jim Connelly about his family business which was established in 1907. The company was founded by Andy and Morgan Connelly in September 1907 in El Reno, Oklahoma. The brothers emigrated from County Cork, Ireland to Oklahoma. In fact, they came to Oklahoma just before it became a state (Oklahoma became the 46th state in the United States November 16, 1907). The Rock Island Railroad has its headquarters in El Reno and at that time the railroad was the major means of transportation. They constructed many brick streets, bridges, and did work for the Rock Island Railroad. Ep 338This is Head Country BBQ Sauce - CR Head
On this episode I chatted with CR Head about his families BBQ sauce businesses. "In 1947 it all started with a sauce. Simple concept… one that’s earned us a place at the dinner table for generations. Not too tangy. Not too sweet. Nothing fancy about it, really. Just a bold, rich, perfectly balanced blend of sweet and savory (with a hint of heat) born in the heartland from the finest Bar-B-Q traditions. Folks say it tastes like home. Thing is though, Head Country goes way beyond the bottle. You’ll find it in the devotion and passion of our fans, many of whom have chosen us for decades. Great flavor alone doesn’t explain it. But great times? Well, great times and Head Country just seem to go together. That’s the not-so-secret ingredient behind every Head Country product. So long as people enjoy it, we’ll proudly keep doing what we do best – bring families and friends together for great times and great Bar-B-Q." Ep 337This is Stonecloud Brewing with Joel Irby
On this episode I chatted with owner of Stonecloud Brewing Joel Irby. Joel has a great story. He left Oklahoma for Colorado to study and fell in love with craft beer and the mountain life. After graduating Joel took a job at a brewery and dove into his passion. 9 years later he returned to OKC with an opportunity to occupy a historic building and open his own taproom. "Our name draws inspiration from the huge skies where endless mountains melt into clouds on the horizon. This might seem odd considering the fact that we are smack in the middle of the flatlands in Oklahoma City, but our founder Joel Irby (an Oklahoma native) spent 10 years perfecting his brewing craft at breweries in Boulder, Colorado. The urge eventually hit to open up his own spot, and with Oklahoma City’s recent growth and proximity to family it was the perfect place to make this dream a reality. We opened our doors in the summer of 2017." Everyone who tasted it said, "you should bottle this". About seven years ago we entered a contest in Ft. Worth, Texas called the "Fiery Food Challenge". Where our men/women have changed the face of recovery worldwide. Where each of our graduate’s stories have been told thousands of times, written about and followed by other men/women like an instruction manual to radical life change. The Hope is Alive Program is a responsible for millions of months of sobriety, and thousands of lives saved. We will redefine the way people get and stay sober. Ep 322This is Dulce De Donke - Oklahoma Donkey Milk
On this episode I chatted with Saundra Traywick about How Donkey milk saved her daughters health. "Milking donkeys was never one of the goals for our life, but sometimes God throws a wrench in our best laid plans. And in the end, it all works out for the good." In 2014 Saundra's 6 year old daughter was diagnosed with PANDAS disease.(Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disease Associated with Strep Throat) Doctors prescribes antibiotics for the next 13 years! Saundra stubbornly refused to accept this as the answer and went on the hunt for a cure. This is were donkey milk comes in. In other countries, donkey milk is well known for it's health benefits, but in America it was practically unheard of, made even more difficult to find since the donkey only gives a few ounces of milk a day, and only with a healthy baby to share the milk with. So Saundra did what any parents would and bought some donkeys. Now they have 30 on their property in Luther. And have started sharing their knowledge with others. Ep 318This is Steve Irby - KICKER Audio
On this episode I chatted with KICKER CEO Mr Steve Irby. In 1973, KICKER's Livin' Loud legacy began as a two-man operation, hand-building professional-speaker systems in a narrow one-car garage. With very few resources and an intense love for music, company founder and current president Steve Irby invented the mobile-stereo enclosure market from his Stillwater, Oklahoma community, when he developed the Original KICKER. It was the first full frequency-range speaker box designed specifically for cars and trucks. From that historic moment, delivering concert-like audio quality across a wide volume range with renowned bass and accurate sound has always been the KICKER way. As a continually evolving brand, KICKER reached new heights 35 years later with the development of “Lifestyle” home and personal products for digital media devices, which include Bluetooth® speaker systems, high-performance headphones and noise-isolating in-ear headsets. KICKER graces the Stillwater skyline and has stayed true to the values from which the company was built. KICKER products are designed and shipped from a 280,000-square-foot facility that houses nearly 200 energetic individuals who constantly push the limits of audio-design technology and performance. KICKER products are currently sold by approximately 1,200 authorized dealers in the United States, and export sales are managed through a network of distributors serving over 2,000 dealers in approximately 50 countries. As audio continues to evolve, KICKER will continue to be on the industry's cutting edge, pushing the limits of audio design technology, performance and integration in the quest for ultimate sound. Ep 317This is Colton Craig - The Oklahoma Golf Course Architect with CoHost Tyler Davis
On this episode myself and Tyler Davis interviewed golf course architect, OSU Grad and Tulsa native Colton Craig. Colton tells us all about his upbringing. His love for the land, how it naturally forms a golf course and his current and future projects. A word from Colton. "Golf course architecture has been a passion of mine my entire life. My old files are filled with golf courses I drew starting at the age of three. I read every book on the topic I can find, and study/walk golf courses religiously. In 2011, I started in the industry as an apprentice to a golf architect in my home town. After learning the basic principles of routing and how to read topography maps, I wanted to get my hands dirty. Over the next couple of years I worked on various maintenance and construction crews to learn the mechanics and operations of a golf course. Determined to continue my dream, I went to Oklahoma State University to get a degree in Landscape Architecture. From there I was able to acquire internships with golf architects around the country. During these experiences I was exposed to all facets of the design process and different project types including renovations, restorations, and new courses. In February of 2019 I started my own design firm and we are currently building our first 18-hole golf course (Park Mammoth Golf Club). I would like to take this time to thank the love of my life Annie who has supported me and my dream since the first day we met." Ep 315This is Art Fusion Studio with Tracy & Rick Bewley
On this episode I chatted with local artists Tracy & Rick about their journey to opening up Art Fusion Studio. About: We are mixed media artists and have been collaborating together as Art Fusion Studio for about 19 years. We enjoy working in many materials including glass, metal, wood and acrylic fabrication. We are a husband and wife team with different and complementary abilities that allow us to design and fabricate very unique art. We are both drawn to mixing materials that highly contrast each other, like glass and concrete, or acrylic and rusted steel. This dichotomy of these materials leads you to examine each more closely, to notice the natural blend of colors in the rust and the complexity of reflections on a polished surface. In particular we love to include an element of transparency by creating openings or adding glass, so that lighting, natural or otherwise, becomes an important part of the sculpture. The transparency also adds depth as the layers of construction are revealed and the landscape on the other side becomes a part of the design. Ep 294This is J.W. Peters - Solar Power of Oklahoma
On this episode I chatted with J.W. Peters, partner at Solar Power of Oklahoma. We talked about the benefits, stigmas and power of solar energy. There's a lot of political jargon around solar power or it doesn't work because the weather in Oklahoma isn't perfect for solar panels. Tornadoes, hail, snow all the seasons. How long you need to have the system on your home for it to be worth it. The issues for lack of solar power on homes. It was a blast to chat with J.W. about the benefits and how the industry is moving forward here in Oklahoma. J.W. ands partner Kevin started Solar Power of Oklahoma with the goal of saving Oklahomans money on their electric bills. They saw a need and knew solar could be the answer to high electric bills across the state, and that's still their goal today.
