Ep 193This is Oklahoma Wildlife
On this episode I sat with the JD Strong and Josh Stratton. These two gentlemen live and breath the outdoors. To the point where its almost their middle name. We had a blast talking about how diverse Oklahoma is. Its one of very few states in the nation with as many eco systems. There's so much wildlife here its baffling to think about it. The impact the wildlife department has on the state of Oklahoma and its tourism, dollars brought in by Oklahomans and outside visitors will shock you. Truly an awesome episode and like myself you'll be ready to spend your pocket money on a rod and some waders to go fly fishing in SE Oklahoma! The Department of Wildlife has a fantastic social media presence but if you don't already follow them you can find them @okwildlifedept and find Josh's blog @against_current www.wildlifedepartment.com #thisisoklahoma
Ep 192This is Wildflower: An Acton Academy
On this episode I sat with Brooke & Jimmy Ogle who've opened up their own school in NW OKC out of a need for better education and opportunities for their three kids. Here's their story, Jimmy and Brooke are both from Oklahoma and have been married since 2009. Together they have three children, each of whom attends Wildflower: An Acton Academy. As a family, they enjoy traveling, playing games, reading, and discovering new things. As a mom, I wanted a different education for my children. After trying both a public and a private Christian school, I knew that the education I dreamed of offering my kids could not be found within the walls of traditional education. That is when I turned to homeschool. I loved educating my kids in unique ways, allowing them to flourish without the unneeded pressure traditional schools encouraged. Then one day, while struggling to piece together some curriculum, I felt homeschooling was still missing some critical aspects. The question that plagued me was if a traditional school or even homeschooling was the best education I could provide my children. I didn’t want to settle for just ok – I wanted excellence. In my heart, I believed there had to be a better way! I felt somewhat stuck between recognizing that my kids had outgrown homeschooling but not feeling confident in any school options available. That is when I found Acton Academy a nonprofit foundation that helps parents open schools worldwide. Acton co-founders Jeff and Laura Sandefer opened the first Acton in Austin Texas in 2008 to create a more robust education for their two sons. They have taken their best practices and learning philosophies and are helping other like-minded families open schools all over the world. It was as if a blurry vision and determination to offer my kids the best education had suddenly become crystal clear. If you are ready to reinvent education for your family, I encourage you to give me a call or schedule a school tour. I look forward to meeting your family. Ep 191This is Dr George Henderson - Part 1
On this episode myself and Shannon interviewed Dr Geroge Henderson. There's so much to talk about in this episode and so much to share so we've devided it into two parts. This first part Dr Henderson talks about his early childhood up to coming to Norman Oklahoma. In Part 2 we'll dive into his work at OU and his thoughts on the future. Bio In 1967, Dr. George Henderson became the University of Oklahoma’s third full-time African American faculty member at the Norman campus. In 1969, he became the first African American in Oklahoma universities to be a distinguished professor when he was appointed the Sylvan N. Goldman Professor of Human Relations, Education and Sociology. Later, he was appointed to three other distinguished professorships: David Ross Boyd Professor, Regents’ Professor, and Kerr-McGee Presidential Professor. After he became the Goldman Professor, he founded the Human Relations Department, which he chaired for 20 years. From 1996 to 2000, he was dean of the College of Liberal Studies. Thus, he was the first African American at the University of Oklahoma to create a degree-granting department; and the first African American dean of a degree-granting college on the Norman campus. Although he retired from the University in 2006, he still teaches on a part-time basis. A civil rights pioneer in higher education in Oklahoma, George Henderson has achieved many other notable accomplishments. His awards and honors include being the recipient of the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence Medal for the Outstanding College and University Professor in 2000; State of Oklahoma Black Heritage Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003; induction into the Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame in 2003 and also induction into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 2003. The Henderson Scholars Program and the Henderson-Tolson Cultural Center on the Norman campus bear his name. The University of Oklahoma awarded him an honorary doctorate (Doctor of Humane Letters) at the May 2011 Commencement. In 2015, Oklahoma Today Magazine named Dr. Henderson one of the forty-five most influential African American Oklahomans. A race relations and civil rights scholar, George Henderson has taught university courses and spoken at conferences and workshops throughout the United States and internationally. In addition, he has written 34 books and 50 articles. In 2011, the Oklahoma Historical Society selected Race and the University as the Outstanding Book on Oklahoma History published in 2010. Also in 2011, Dr. Henderson and his wife Barbara were recipients of the Xenia Institute’s Sam Mathews Social Justice Award. They were the first African American property owners in Norman. Dr. Henderson’s master’s degree in sociology and Ph.D. in educational sociology are from Wayne State University in Detroit. This episode is presented by the oklahoma hall of fame. Ep 189This is Royce Young
On this episode myself and Eric Granado @eric.granado interviewed NBA writer Royce Young. Royce is Oklahoma born and bread, he grew up in Mustang where he still lives today. Went to SWOSU for a short period and when signing up for school there was asked to declare his major. At that time he and a buddy were told, "if you sign up for journalism you only have to take one math class" That was all he needed to hear, after one year at SWOSU Royce left to attend OU where his girlfriend and later wife studied. Royce continued in journalism, wrote about the Sooners and then when the thunder came to town he started a blog called Daily Thunder. After graduating Royce took a part time job with OU and later accepted a full time position to be their first Social Media Specialist. Shortly after accepting that position CBS called and offered Royce less money but an opportunity to write for the NBA. No brainer there! That started a career in writing for CBS, then ESPN where he's at today. Still covering The Thunder and traveling around the country writing for the NBA. Royce dives into his career, the ups and downs, the fan moments and the moments he has had with the best basketball players in the world. Royce is currently working for ESPN and ready for the season to start back up. Follow him on all social media platforms @royceyoung especially on twitter. Thanks to my cohost Eric for the awesome Thunder questions. IF YOU LIKED THIS EPISODE AND WANT TO HEAR MORE SUBSCRIBE AND LEAVE A REVIEW Cheers. #thisisoklahoma

Ep 187This is Brian Bogert - Social Order Dining Collective
On this episode I talked with Brian Bogert. You probably know of Brian but if you don't you'll definitely know the restaurants and bars he and his business partner Manny own. They started with Texadelphia but have recently sold it. Currently the have The Jones Assembly, Fuzzys, Seven 47 and soon Spark. Here's a little about their story. "We have been bringing social hospitality to Oklahoma for close to two decades. We are a group of fun-seekers, game-changers and food enthusiasts. We play hard, but work harder, always keeping our head on a swivel. After graduating from SMU and quitting their corporate jobs, best friends Brian Bogert and Manny Leclercq brought one of their favorite college hangouts to Norman, OK. Texadelphia opened on the corner of Lindsey & Berry in 2003. From there, Seven47 was born and has turned into a landmark on OU’s Campus Corner. In 2010 we franchised the Fort Worth based, Fuzzy’s Taco Shop. 10 years and 7 locations later, Fuzzy’s quickly turned into our bread and butter. The same year Fuzzy’s became part of our brand, a second Texadelphia location was added to the landscape of Lower Bricktown. But it wasn’t until 2016 when The Social Order really came to life. With The Jones Assembly on the verge of opening it was time to bring these individual concepts together as one family. The Jones Assembly put us on the map as it is the largest concept and biggest endeavor we have undertaken yet. While concepts have come and gone (Texadelphia was sold back to Texas corporate in 2020), we are proud of the community The Social Order has created in Oklahoma. We are invested in the renaissance and continued growth of our great state of Oklahoma. Whether it’s creating a new concept or furthering the success of an existing brand, we believe in raising our standards and never settling for less than the best. Every Restaurant. Every Team. Every Time." Brian was a pretty decent tennis player in Highschool winning state championships in his sleep but decided to pursue a career and not tennis, going to SNU in Dallas. He's recently stepped down as their coach after winning I believe its 8 state championships for Heritage Hall. He had to step down to focus more on the business and as you can imagine COVID19 has all of his attention. Really appreciate Brians time and what he and Manny have done for Norman and OKC in the restaurant industry. Go follow him on Instagram @teambogie and also all their other businesses for news, events and more @socialorderdiningcollective @thejonesokc @fuzzysokla @seven47norman @eatatspark #thisisoklahoma
Ep 186This is Ryan Broyles - OU | NFL | Real Estate Investor
On this episode I chatted with OU Football star receiver and retired Detroit Lions NFL player Ryan Broyles. Ryan is born and raised Oklahoman. Born in OKC, attends high school in Moore and accepted a scholarship to OU. But not till late in the year. He received the call late from OU and had many offers to go elsewhere. Especially OSU, as he mentioned in the podcast. OSU had been in touch since high junior year and he'd committed to go there before OU swooped in and stole him away. Ryan talks about entering OU with a chip on his shoulder, all the naysayers doubting his height, his ability and his size. His first game after a redshirt freshman year he set a freshman record and continued to break records all through college. Ryan broke the all time receiving record in the NCAA in senior year and unfortunately had to sit on the sidelines after a torn ACL cut his season short. He's currently still the 3rd all time NCAA receiver. It was at the moment that he realized this could be the end, and that it could end at anytime. Ryan started to plan for his future. Knowing he's probably going to the NFL he planned to make his signing bonus and contract last for a long time. Ryan went in the second round to the Detroit Lions and lived off a 60k budget as an NFL player. Putting his money in investments and later real estate. A friend’s family introduced him to real estate, so he bought his first flip home for 19k. Put 20k into it and rented it out. He refinanced and made double his initial investment. He was hooked. As he continued to play in Detroit he bought properties and then once he retired he and his wife Mary Beth went all in to real estate. Ryan currently has 50 rental properties; they have a college bar in Norman and have just started the selling side of real estate as licensed realtors. Ep 183This is Deanne Brodie-Mends
On this episode myself and Taryn interviewed longtime college friend of mine. Deanne Brodie-Mends @theladydeanne on all socials. Links below. Deanne's family is from Ghana and moved to the states before she was born. She grew up in Moore Oklahoma in an education focused house. Her mom would always have her and her siblings reading, speaking on stage and learning new words. As many immigrants will know, immigrant parents push education as the way to succeed from a young age. Many friends of mine have had the same experience, as Deanne said "there's a small window of what you can be as an immigrant child. Doctor, Lawyer etc." Deanne's mom put her on stage from a young age which now is the reason she is so comfortable performing, speaking and sharing her work. Deanne is currently working full time and has a masters degree in education but her passion and the reason for our podcast was to share her stories, poems and the fire that she has inside of her to spread the word throughout the community. Deanne is incredible on stage, spoken word, poems really anything. Her delivery, the weight of the words that come from her writing. Its just a joy to see a friend do so much with the gift she's been developing for years. Deanne has only been doing this on stage for 3/4 years but a lifetime of moms backing to go on stage, write assignments and participate in all kinds of social settings has developed this skill. Her latests poem and piece is called "The Single" its about single women and how they feel. You can watch it here its POWERFUL! This is just the start of Deanne's projects for 2020, there's a book coming and many more performances. Follow all of Deanne's big projects here. Ep 178This is Kaldwell Grant
I've seen Kaldwells feed before, he lives on his bike. I'm sure he would agree with me that he's addicted to riding and rides everywhere. Yes, everywhere. So naturally he's a very good cyclist. Riding a 100 miles in one day is no joke and something that I have on my 2020 to do list. At first glance reading his caption, the bike part got my attention. I need all the advice I can get for my 100 mile race. The more I read the more I realized its not about the anniversary of his century ride. So I sent Kaldwell a message and asked if he'd like to share some stories from his cycling journey over the last 5 years and life in general experiences. Today we connected and although I have a passion for cycling, I am nowhere near his level of rider. But I will be one day. We talked for over an hour about the differences and commonalities we have centered around life, food, cycling, movies and our shared love for OKC. Like I said on Saturday after the car show, it doesn't matter what you look like, where you come from or who you parents are. A common passion levels all differences in the world. When you get together all you want to talk about is that one thing you have in common. I'll be honest, as a white male from Wales. I was nervous about talking with Kaldwell. Not about cycling, food, movies but about the current state of our world. As someone who didn't grow up around black culture, I was nervous about saying the wrong thing. Being disrespectful in any way. I think its because of all the media telling us what to do and what not to do. I let it get in my head which only makes it more difficult to have tough conversations. You know when you think about doing something for so long that it becomes this huge task. Well that went right out the window the minute we started talking. Kaldwell said it best, "We have to have these hard conversations, its been 9 or so days since George Floyd was killed, we can't fix anything in 9 days but we have to continue to work towards fixing it." I appreciate Kaldwell and his son for inviting me into their home to talk about life and the opportunity to share their story. Go and have a person to person conversation with your friends. Just have real conversations and hear each others point of view. If you can't meet them face to face have a zoom call and hangout, engage with each other. Kaldwells is now putting his face on his Instagram to show people it can be done. In a predominately white sport like cycling the world needs more Kaldwells. Especially because he's like a superhero on his bike. A quick story from the podcast, Kaldwell was once stopped in a small town on one of his rides. This guy came up to him, told him he looked like a superhero. He didn't know if he was taking the piss or if he was genuinely complimenting him. If you've seen a cyclist you'll know what that guy was thinking, yes everything matches and we're dressed head to toe in lycra! Like Power Rangers and we have no shame, its part of the sport. If you want to get into cycling, even if you're starting out for the first time. Talk to your local bike shop, find a friend that wants to do it wth you and go ride your bike. If you want to get to the level of Kaldwell, like I do. Reach out to him and ask some questions. He and his son have started riding together, last weekend they rode 17 miles to go have an icy. His son is 12, believe me if a 12 year old can cycle 17 miles you can cycle 10 around Lake Hefner. Soon I'm going to go ride with Kaldwell and i'll try to keep up! Follow Kaldwell Grant @_fearlessleader_
Ep 177This is Raymond Dorwart & Bo Lockhart - Dorwarts Custom Cowboy Boots Guthrie Oklahoma
On this episode myself and Eric Granado interviewed Raymond and Bo from Dorwarts Custom Cowboy Boots in Guthrie Oklahoma. Raymond is world famous in the custom cowboy boot scene. His apprentice Bo is quickly making a name for himself learning from one of the best. Now as you all know, I am as far from a cowboy as it gets. Born in the UK, cowboying is not a thing! So walking into their shop in Guthrie, seeing the history on the walls, the machines that are older than I am, the smells, the dust. The character of the whole place just oozes stories. Some of those stories made it onto todays podcast. Picture a cowboy in your head. What does he look like? Yeah thats Raymond and Bo. Raymond isn't on social media, he just got a flip phone... Bo's wife runs his Facebook page where you can see his designs. "Lockhart Cowboy Customs" Bo's wait list right now is about 3 months and his custom boots start at $1500. Raymonds boots start at $3000 and his wait list is right around a year. I've recorded over 175 episodes now and as far as Oklahoma goes, this is as Oklahoma as it gets. Ep 176This is Luke Kwon - Oklahoma Golf #014
This weeks golf episode is a crazy wild story! OU Golfer Luke Kwon originally born in South Korea came to the states 15 years ago with his parents. They started a business here and were granted their green cards. Luke came here on his parents green card because he was under 18. Luke lives here the whole time. Falls in love with golf and is awarded a golf scholarship at St Edwards university in Austin. After one year in Austin he transfers to OU. A rough couple of years but finally he breaks through and is consistently making the team and wins a tournament his senior year. This is where it gets interesting, because Luke is over 18 he's not on his parents visa and he wasn't granted a green card once he turned 18. So he's on a student visa, like I was when I first came to play college golf at SNU. So Luke is faced with being sent back to South Korea after college because he doesn't have a green card. To get an athlete visa he needed a tour card for the PGA or Korn Ferry Tour. Which out of college is extremely hard to do! Luke goes on a rollercoaster ride from 2015 to 2019. He created a Youtube channel to fun his professional dreams, moved to New Zealand and then because of his youtube channel he is able to sign more sponsors. He plays in China with the hope of qualifying to come back to America as a Korn Ferry Tour player. Spoiler alert, he does! Luke successfully plays his way back to the states, back to his parents and back to his home. Follow Luke on Instagram as he plays his rookie season in the states. @luke.kwon @thisisoklahomagolf
Ep 175This is Andrew Greene - Drone Master Photographer ( Part 1 )
On this episode I sat with Andrew Green or ANDREW G IMAGE as he's know in the community. Andrew is a published photographer, producer, & writer based out of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Andrew is colorblind. Yet popularity for his photographs and prints continue to surge, in part, for their “color-pop”. Modern technology enables him to balance color during capture and edit. Using what’s known as a color histogram, Andrew can balance color the same as any other photographer. The ANDREW G IMAGE brand and print art has grown at a fast pace since launching in 2016. Andrew began specializing in landscape photography in his home state of Oklahoma. Clients nationwide are now commissioning him to travel and capture the places they call home. While traveling the country is a year-round passion, the “coming home” part of each trip is his favorite. “OKC is my home. Oklahoma is where all of my best childhood memories were made”, Andrew recalls. “I spent every summer in the Arbuckle Mountains at a campground located on the banks of Honey Creek, less than half a mile downstream from Turner Falls. I graduated from Bethany High School, right in the heart of The OKC Metro. Oklahoma will always be my favorite subject to shoot!” While he has spent a lifetime cultivating the disciplines & skills utilized to create the unique brand of work he is known for, ANDREW G's body of work began officially in 2016. Ep 173This is Sam Humphreys - Oklahoma Golf #013
On this episode I sat with golfer Sam Humphreys. Sam has a pretty incredible story which if you google him you'll see that he had a life altering experience while playing college golf. Short story, he tried to pick up a club by standing on the face as most golfers do, it hit him in the privates and caused immense pain for a few days. Causing him to go to the ER and ultimately finding out that he had testicular cancer. We talk about that experience as well as him being at Tulsa university when the mens golf program was shutdown. Sam is currently playing professional golf on the APT, practicing daily out at Oak Tree and also diving into the broadcasting world follow his fathers footsteps ( Craig Humphreys ) starting his own podcast called "The Great Day Podcast" which you can find on Apple and Spotify. Follow Sam on Instagram and check out his first episode with Skip Baylis. #thisisoklahomagolf
Ep 172This is Matthew Swaggart - HoldFast Gear
On this episode I chatted with owner of HoldFast Gear. Matthew born and raised in Baton Rouge moved to Tulsa to study at ORU. Where he met his wife and now lives in Bigsby. Matthew was a graphic designer and became a photographer after college, specifically wedding photography. He noticed a gap in the market for high end leather camera straps that as well as being important for back support also had a fashion element to them. He'd show up to his weddings dressed like he was supposed to be there. Not like most photographers dressed in all black. Because he was dress appropriately he fit in and subsequently looked more professional doing his job. However, at that time he's still wearing a black camera strap and in his words " looked like a swat team member " So he created a leather camera strap named "The Money Maker" It took off and the business was born, now selling more and more products and branching out HoldFast Gear sells and makes all its products in the USA. Assembles all the camera straps at their shop in Bigsby and ships all over the world. With stores in Asia, Europe and Australia this little company has a huge footprint in the photography industry and continues to thrive. Check out their website www.holdfastgear.com and on Instagram @holdfastgear Thank you Matt for your time. #thisisoklahoma
Ep 171This is Michael Weidemann
On this episode I sat with friend Michael Weidemann. Fun fact about Michael, he designed the logo for This is Oklahoma a long time ago when this was just getting started. Michael started out as a photographer, his Dad was a photographer and as a kid they'd go on roadtrips all over the country. Stopping to take pictures a long the way, which at the time really annoyed a younger Michael. Until his father gave him a camera to take on one of his field trips with school. He was hooked. If you know Michael, you'll know that he's very good with a camera in his hand. As most people breaking into the profession of photography he took to shooting weddings. Michael decided to target everyone across the country for weddings, and not to compete with the saturated market in OKC. After his success using SEO and other marketing skills he decided to offer this help to other businesses. Helping them generate leads, get more clicks on their ads and bring more people to their websites. Michael started his new business called Tallgrass Supply Co to put his own methods into practice. What better way to show how good you are at what you do than to show them your own numbers and success. Michael's business is growing and so is his client list. Tallgrass Supply Co sells many things but the most interesting is candles. Scented by the memories Michael has as a kid traveling to far away places with his Dad. Check it out www.tallgrasssupplyco.com and on Instagram @tallgrasssupplyco #thisisoklahoma

Ep 159This is Matt Brown
On this episode I sat with Matt Brown. Matt's family business Red Rock Distribution Company has been distributing fuel around Oklahoma for the past 75 years. This is one of those Oklahoma generational businesses that reminds you who we are as Oklahoman's. Company History "In 1937, Barney Brown, Sr. and his two sons opened a single gasoline station in Oklahoma City at SW 10th & Walker. With gasoline selling for $0.12 - $0.14 a gallon, the small family business began selling and distributing motor fuel in the Oklahoma City metro area. From the original Pepper’s Refinery on S. High Street, Brown & Sons Oil Company started by delivering fuel to commercial customers like Lee Way Motor Freight. At the end of WWII, Barney Brown Sr. and his two sons, moved their office to the Oklahoma City Stockyards, where they worked hard to service vehicles and grow their commercial bobtail delivery service. By 1957, the Brown’s had acquired another distributorship, Red Rock, from the first Conoco jobber in the state, Ed Klein. After the acquisition, the Brown’s formally changed the name of the new company to Red Rock Distributing Company, Inc. As the family business grew, other companies were purchased, and assimilated into a company that not only sold gasoline and diesel, but lubricants, lawn mowers, coolers, and auto parts. In 1969, Barney’s son, Steve, joined the business and by 1975 Steve had developed a convenience store concept called, Save-A-Stop. After three generations, the company had grown from operating a single service station, to operating 25 convenience stores in the metro Oklahoma City area. Their transportation business had also grown from a single 308-gallon bobtail truck, to several 9,500-gallon transport vehicles. And if you ask Barney Brown, Jr. the secret to their success, he won’t hesitate to tell you, “We have a family that values integrity.” Integrity is just one of the words that has been used to describe this unique family and the their business. According to Steve, “This company was founded on several principles we still follow today. First, we live up to the deals we make. Second, we service our customers with honesty and integrity. Third, we are always ready and willing to adapt our business plan when the business environment changes. And finally, we treat our customers like family.” In 2001, Steve’s son Matt returned to Oklahoma City, and became a fourth generation marketer at Red Rock. Together, Steve and Matt have continued to expand and grow the core parts of the business. “I am so excited to see Matt come back and work with his Dad. You know there aren’t many companies that can say they have had four generations of experience in a single business. It makes me very proud to see them carrying on our family's legacy with such great success and integrity, “ Barney said. Before returning to Oklahoma City, Matt spent 5 years working for Phillips Petroleum in Bartlesville and San Antonio, TX. Over the years, the Browns have been involved with many professional and civic organizations. Organizations like The Oklahoma Trucking Association, The Oklahoma Grocers Association, The Petroleum Marketers Association of America, and from its inception, the Oklahoma Petroleum Marketers Association, (OPMA-OACS). In addition, both Steve and Matt volunteer within the community and serve on several non-profit boards. Steve said, “In an ever changing business and cultural climate, it is important to support other businesses within our industry and give our time and expertise to help improve the community in which we live. Participating in trade organizations gives us the opportunity to address concerns and solve problems by talking with business people who share the same goals. Serving our community by volunteering our time and resources helps to improve the lives of our customers and employees. Both Matt and myself have always felt a strong desire to give back to the communities we work and live within. We hope to make a difference by setting a good example for our employees, customers, and suppliers. We hope that they see our commitment to improving the lives of others and will follow our lead.” For more than 75 years, Red Rock Distributing Company has continued to grow its transportation and wholesale fuel distributing business. With the sale of the Save-A-Stop convenience store chain in 1997, Red Rock decided to invest more in their core wholesale fuel business by becoming a leading supplier of high-octane racing fuels for many tracks and racers in Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas. With a fleet of 17 transports and 2 bobtail trucks that service locations all over Oklahoma, they now sell wholesale branded fuel from Shell, Conoco, Phillips 66, Valero, Shamrock and Sinclair as well as unbranded fuel from some 12 additional suppliers. In this new era of business, that seems to love high-tech companies with high-dollar office space and limited life expectancy, Red Rock Distributing Company has proven that a few

Ep 156This is Garrett Diel - Oklahoma Golf #009
On this episode of @thisisoklahomagolf I sat with Head Pro of Gaillardia Country Club, Garrett Diel. I used to work for Garrett at OKC Golf and Country Club a few years ago while he was an assistant. Garrett grew up in Enid, really small school class. He played every sport as a kid and came to golf relatively late at the age of 12. With no golfers in the family he'd go play with his friend and friends Dad out in Enid. Most pros you talk to love the game and want to work in golf because of that. Garrett loved the business aspect to golf. He put the clubs down for two years while studying at OSU but when UCO's PGM program became an option to go to university and learn all you needed to learn about being a pro and running a business he jumped at it. Garrett worked in the cart barn at OKCG&CC during his time at UCO, he'd go on internships every summer at courses around the country. When he graduated Tim took him on at OKC. Garrett took a Job at Belmar GC in Norman owned by Toby Keith where he worked for 3 years as his first Head Pro position before getting the job at Gaillardia where he's been for just over a year. Thanks for listening and follow us @thisisoklahomagolf for more news, reviews and stories on Oklahoma Golf. Stay safe.
Ep 155This is Matt Holder
On this episode I sat with friend Matt Holder. Matt and I first met when I started real estate back in 2015. He was my first business coach when I started at Keller Williams Elite. Matt is from SW OKC, grew up in Moore, graduated from South Moore High School. He worked in real estate his junior year at a new construction development owned by his best friends family. Matt didn’t want to be in real estate, he wanted to be a doctor. Matt’s whole family had ties to real estate, his mom sold homes, his dad sold building materials and his grandfather built homes. So it was written on the wall that real estate was in his future. As soon as he turned 18 he took his real estate test and became a realtor. Since 2013 Matt has worked in the industry, coaching clients, learning from leaders and building his business and others. Matt has failed more times than most will ever fail in their lifetimes but that's one of the keys to his success. He's recently left a great job to chase his own dreams of being a small business coach and helping others win in their fields. Every time I sit with Matt I learn something and this was no different. Enjoy the gems in this episode, if you're a small business owner and need guidance. Matt is your man. Ep 154This is Amy Downs - Hope is a Verb
On this episode I interviewed Amy Downs. Amy survived the OKC Bombing on April 19, 1995. "Amy shouldn’t even be here. Seven years into her job at what we now know as Allegiance Credit Union, a bomb exploded in her building, killing 168 people, including 18 of her 33 co-workers. Amy fell three stories and was buried alive for over six hours. Today, Amy is now President and an award-winning CEO. Rather than being taken down by that catastrophe, Allegiance Credit Union grew by 400% and is consistently voted a Best Place to Work in Oklahoma. This year, Amy was recognized by the Oklahoma Journal Record as a “Most Admired CEO.” Drawing on her new book about these experiences, called “Hope Is A Verb,” Amy is excited to share with you what she has learned about how you can respond to this crisis we find ourselves in — and how to actually have your organization come out of it even stronger." Ep 153This is Nick Chafey
This episode was recorded in February of this year before any of the covid19 complications. Thank you for understanding that some of the events we talk about in this episode have been rescheduled or postponed. On this episode I sat with college friend Nick Chafey to share his testimony in memory of his mother Rona Linn Kuehner-Chafey who passed in the OKC Bombing. Nick grew up in the Bethany area. His whole family lives in Bethany so naturally he wanted to attend SNU, which is where we met. Ever since I’ve known Nick he’s always wanted to play soccer. He played for SNU and then after changing his major he was ineligible to play. However, he still got his soccer fix when we played some intramural indoor soccer. Nick reached out to me a few months back and asked if he could share his testimony and his mom’s memory to our listeners. He was four in 1995 when his mom passed. His recollection of that day is as any four year old would be. He doesn’t have many memories of his mom; all his memories are learned memories, stories from others about his mom, what she was like and who she was. His older sister was 14 at the time. Her memory of the experience is completely different as well as his Dad or friends who knew his mom. So Nick remembers his mom and the whole experience differently to those of his family. With the 25-year anniversary this was a very special moment and I am extremely grateful to have a platform like This is Oklahoma to share Nicks story to you today. In loving memory of his mother Rona Linn Kuehner-Chafey and those who lost their lives on April 19,1995. Presented by the Oklahoma Hall of Fame. Ep 152This is Simas Gumuliauskas
On this episode I sat with Simas Gumuliauskas. Myself and Simas both graduated from Southern Nazarene University. Simas is from Lithuania, he came to the states in 2002 as a foreign exchange student to a small town near Houston called Willis, Texas. His father found a company that helped place foreign exchange students so Simas flew to New York for a few days and then was places in Willis Texas. As a junior in high school, can you imagine flying halfway around the world? Not being able to speak much English and not being able to go home until the year was over. Simas had his eyes set on graduating high school and going to university in the states. Simas continued his basketball for the high school winning the district championship for that high school. Simas injured his knee at the end of this junior year so he didn’t play much his senior year. I’m no basketball nerd but Simas explains that his European basketball style is no match for the up paced physicality of basketball in the states. Simas finished high school in Willis and wanted to go to Texas A&M, he studied at bling college with the hope to transfer his credits into Texas A&M. After his one year at Bling College he didn’t go to A&M because of the added expenses for an out of country students he couldn’t afford to go. So he went back to his friends from Willis who had ties to SNU and made the transfer up to Bethany Oklahoma. Simas first love is basketball; it’s the most popular sport in Lithuania. Sadly some injury left him on the sideline his senior year so there was no chance of him playing for SNU. However, he could still run. So he was offered a track scholarship and ran track for SNU. Simas worked hard at SNU, got his degree and his MBA and during the financial crisis of 2008/09 he was offered a position at Devon Energy he worked in a treasury group there for three years and then moved to chaparral energy in long term planning in the corporate development group for about three more years. Simas is very intelligent, he won’t say this himself but he is. He really enjoyed his time at Chaparral energy because he was able to branch out more across the board instead of being stuck in his specialty at Devon. After years in corporate America advising at Devon Energy Simas turned to Real Estate when they had their first child for Simas to have flexibility to take care of his first child Ivy. Simas’s is wife Amy is a pediatrician so it made sense for her to continue working and for Simas to work just not as much. Simas and Amy are about to have their third child. We wish them all the best for their future and look forward to catching up with them in the future. On this episode I sat with Heisman Trophy winner Jason White. Jason grew up in Tuttle Oklahoma. Dreamt of playing football for OU one day. With hardwork and determination he made his dream a reality. Coach Stoops recruited him and he went on to become one of OU's Heisman Trophy winners. Unfortunately for Jason he was riddled with injury forcing him to retire way too early. After making the decision he tried a number of different things, investments, owned stores selling OU and OSU merchandise. Until one day Mr Gregory from ACS asked him to do some radio advertisements for football season. That relationship grew over time and in 2010 Jason was brought on full time working as customer service for ACS. Can you imagine being a sooner fan and answering the phone to Jason White asking how he can help you? Jason has progressed over the years, recorded a lot of advertising campaigns and is now in charge of the commercial division of ACS. I really enjoyed my time interviewing Jason, we talked a lot about his love for golf, how he now watches games, his top 3 moments in college football and what the future looks like for ACS. *This episode was recorded pre COVID19 back in February. Myself and Rob had no idea what would be in the future. His job has been affected with the arena closing and no games being played anywhere.* On this episode I sat with Chesapeake Arena in house photographer Rob Ferguson. Rob has been a photographer from a very early age. He started in 6th grade when his teacher taught them pinhole photography. His parents let him build a dark room in their house so he could develop the photos he'd taken. Back when you had to wait hours for feedback on your photos, not like today where you get instant feedback make a few adjustments on the camera and shoot again. Rob spoke about going home, developing then going back the next day to take the same photo with a different setting to see if it worked any better. Rob shared his journey to becoming the in house photographer at the arena as well as some of the best experiences he's had behind the camera. Shooting concerts for the best artists in the world here in OKC. Follow Rob on Instagram @robokc Follow Bedfords camera @bedfordsokc and @photocon_okc
Ep 148This is Jason Smith
On this episode I sat down with my friend, golf partner, pastor and Ducks fan Jason Smith. I met Jason as a sophomore in college when he became our golf team Chaplin. Jason came to Oklahoma to play college golf from Ontario Oregon in 1999. At SNU he felt called to become a pastor and met his awesome wife Katie. During college Jason interned at OKC First Church of the Nazarene where he still works today. Over the years Jason has become a great friend to me and my wife. He officiated both our weddings ( a story for another day ) This was a special podcast for me. Its one I've been wanting to record since I started the podcast over 2 years ago and I'm glad we made it happen. Jason and his wife Katie have two incredible daughters McCall and Berkley and lets just say that we still play a lot of golf together.
