While First Lady she planned and organized the International Prayer Service and published In Their Name, which was listed on the New York Times bestseller list, following the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. She founded Friends of the Oklahoma Governor’s Mansion, Septemberfest, and the Capitol Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony, as well starting the tradition of an annual Oklahoma ornament. She raised private funds to build the Phillips Pavilion on Governor’s Mansion grounds and conceived and implemented a grounds management program for female inmates to learn a marketable job skill. Keating has received the Salvation Army’s William Booth Award, Tom Brokaw’s “People of the Week” Honor, the David and Sybil Yurman Foundation’s “Thoroughbred” Award, been inducted to the Oklahoma Hall of Fame and the Tulsa Hall of Fame, and named an “Outstanding Southerner” in Southern Living Magazine. Ms. Williams has overseen Oklahoma’s System of Care (OKSOC) expansion from a 17-county program serving children ages 5-18, to a statewide program serving individuals ages 0-25 across all of Oklahoma’s 77 counties. Through her leadership, the OKSOC has grown exponentially, with enrollment increasing over 1000% during her tenure. On this episode I chatted with C4 and Scott Mabrey of Mabrey Bank. The Mabrey family’s ownership of the bank is a story that began long before it became the community bank people know today. The Mabrey family has been involved in banking since 1906, when G. W. Mabrey served on the Board of Directors for Citizens National Bank of Okmulgee. In 1909, Carlisle Mabrey Sr. became a teller and assistant cashier for the bank. He worked at the bank for many years and in 1943 was named Chairman of the Board. Carlisle Mabrey Jr. bought a controlling interest in the bank in 1966 and became President and Chairman of the Board that same year. After acquiring Citizens Security Bank and Trust Company in Bixby, founded in 1924, the Mabrey family combined the organizations in 2004 bringing together two strong community banks that had been serving Oklahomans for nearly 180 combined years. The performing arts festival will again follow a hybrid in-person and virtual model, with all in-person performances taking place at Jewel Box Theatre at 36th Ave., and Walker Ave., N.W.. Theatre Crude’s 10-day fringe festival will feature 40 in-person performances from 12 multidisciplinary performance groups. On each of the 10 days, audience members will have the opportunity to attend a different line-up of performances. On this episode I chatted with Piyush Patel about his entrepreneurial journey. Last fall I had the opportunity to tour Piyush's home in OKC and boy is it special. Almost as special as his story and message for you all today. Piyush grew up in El Reno Oklahoma and learned the value of hard work and gratitude from a young age. However, culturally his parents wanted him to become one of three things. To which Piyush did not take to very enthusiastically. So he joined the military to pay for his schooling and became a teacher. Working part time at the local radio station at OSU he noticed a room. A special room where people spent hours and hours in, that room was the animation room. He was hooked, marrying his passion for teaching and learning animation his business was born. I'll let Piyush take it from here. This story is just one of many example of the opportunity that this incredible country presented to immigrants like myself and Piyush. On this episode I sat with Chairman Barrett of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. John A. Barrett, Jr. is a native of Shawnee, Oklahoma, and a graduate of Shawnee High School. His Potawatomi name is Keweoge, meaning, “He Leads Them Home.” Chairman Barrett has served as an elected official for the Citizen Potawatomi Nation since 1973 when he was first elected as Vice-Chairman. Tribal Chairman since 1985, Barrett is the eighth generation of his family to serve in elected office for CPN. Under his leadership, the Nation has gone from having assets totaling just $550 and less than three acres of land to an entity having an annual economic impact exceeding $550 million. During Chairman Barrett’s administration, the Citizen Potawatomi Nation has experienced more than 15 percent average annual growth for more than 20 consecutive years. With more than 2,300 employees, Citizen Potawatomi Nation is the largest employer in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma. He serves as the Chief Executive of the Tribe, presiding over the 16-member Tribal Legislature that enacts the laws and ordinances under which it is governed. His elected position as Tribal Chairman also requires him to direct the Tribe’s administrative functions and commercial activities. He was instrumental in the creation and adoption of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation’s current constitution and statutes, which have led to the Nation’s extended period of stability and progress. He has guest lectured at Harvard University for the Harvard Project on American Indian Economic Development and at the Banff Center in Banff, Alberta, Canada, to the assembled Canadian First Nations on the same topics. He serves on the International Advisory Council of the Native Nations Institute founded by the Morris Udall Foundation at the University of Arizona and the Harvard Project on American Indian Economic Development.
