S1 Ep 1486#1486 Mental Health First Aid - Mares Van Lambaart

Mares Van Lambaart is back talking all-things mental health and it's fair to say that we covered lots of territory. 'Most people are familiar with the idea of physical first aid courses that teach the skills and knowledge required to recognise and respond to life-threatening emergencies and provide a first aid response across a range of different situations. Mental Health First Aid training adopts a similar approach. Using a practical, skills-based action plan, participants learn the skills to recognise and respond to someone experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis, until professional help is received or the crisis resolves. Individuals who complete Mental Health First Aid training are known as MHFAiders. Equipped with the skills to listen, connect, and offer support when it matters most, MHFAiders play a vital role in reducing stigma and promoting pathways to support for those experiencing mental health problems in our workplaces, communities, schools, and tertiary institutions.' *Copy courtesy of the MHFA website.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1485#1485 Hannah's New Leg - Dr Hannah Macdougall

Dr Hannah Macdougall just got a new running leg. Apparently, it's fast. Which is good. Hannah is an elite athlete, dual Paralympian and Bronze Medalist, Inclusion Advocate, and has completed a PhD in Well-Being. Apart from being a world-class swimmer, cyclist and triathlete, she's also an educator, high-performance expert and great story-teller. She's also a little inappropriate (my favourite part). In 2014 Bramham entered the eleventh season of Big Brother Australia and was a contestant in the first season of Australian Ninja Warrior in 2017. This was a fun chat with a fun bloke. S1 Ep 1482#1482 The Diabetes Epidemic - Professor Peter Brukner

Today's chat is with one of my friends and colleagues, Professor Peter Brukner and the following paragraph (which summarises our conversation) is from a recent article in 'The Australian' newspaper by journalist Natasha Robinson.. “The diet wars have been raging in Australia for decades. Experts are pitted against one another in acrimonious battles over what the evidence really says on low carb, meat, saturated fat, plant-based foods, and myriad other points of dietary contention. But now, consensus has emerged on one thing: low-carb is an effective approach to maximise metabolic health. And with the majority of Australians metabolically unhealthy, is it an approach that everyone should follow? In a highly significant move, the nation's peak body for diabetes, Diabetes Australia, has entered a partnership with prominent low-carb diet proponent Dr Peter Bruner to promote his low-carb program to its members via Brukner's charity Defeat Diabetes. Brukner reversed his own diabetes and lost a substantial amount of weight through the approach.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1481#1481 Getting Sh*t Wrong - Harps

We humans hate being wrong. And we love being right. Especially when our thought, idea and/or belief is intertwined with our identity; our sense of self. In this scenario, when you attack my belief or ideology, you attack me and the platform from where I see, experience and understand the world. Being wrong, especially about something we've thought or believed for decades, is f**king terrifying for us, so we (can) shut ourselves down to any message or belief that doesn't endorse, support or align with, our own. And in a world where we all get things wrong, the self-righteous, arrogant, echo-chamber approach, doesn't work.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1480#1480 Memory Training - Tansel Ali

Tansel Ali is really good at remembering stuff. Like the entire contents of two phone books (for a company’s marketing campaign). He is 4-time Australian memory champion but at the age of 24 had a terrible memory, until he figured out how to optimise his capacity for data storage and retrieval. This was a fun chat about the brain, mind, cognition, learning, storytelling and of course, improving memory.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1479#1479 Snot Blocks & Stand-Up Desks - Harps & Tiff

This episode is an eclectic mix of divergent topics, themes and subject matter. That is, we rambled on about lots of different sh*t, including (but not limited to) snot blocks, Aussie slang and jargon, international actors trying to pull off an Aussie accent, becoming addicted to a Trainer, Coach or Therapist, creating an accountability system (why and how), the habit of trying to make people 'feel good in the moment' (and potentially handicapping them over the long term), the physical downside of living and working in a high-tech, comfort-obsessed world and lots more. S1 Ep 1478#1478 Disappearing Professions - David Gillepsie

New jobs are being born, old jobs are dying. For virtually all of human existence, podcasting wasn't a career option. Now it is. Gillespo is back at TYP Central and we explore the good and bad of the technology onslaught, Elon Musk's brain implant (direct internet access in your head), the energy cost of thinking (the brain uses a lot of calories), misleading nutritional labels, the dodgy science behind recommended daily intakes (RDl's), why and how ChatGPT is becoming friendlier and sounding increasingly human and David tells me why I'm probably not a psychopath (phew!). S1 Ep 1477#1477 The Evolution of Rachel Berger - Rachel Berger

She's a comedian, writer, speaker, story-teller and one-time Urban Princess (her words) but not anymore; now Rachel Berger is a chainsaw wielding, nature-embracing, tree-whispering, wallaby-feeding part of the nature she now co-exists with. She not only lives in nature, she IS nature. I love that. Nine years ago, Rachel walked away from her busy, high-profile urban existence on the 'mainland' and relocated to a beautiful seventy-acre rural haven in Tassie, away from the concrete, the mayhem and the noise. Exactly 1,000 days after her first TYP appearance Rachel is back (complete coincidence), and this was a fascinating chat. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1475#1475 My Life Design Questions (PT2) - Harps

These are questions that I have asked myself repeatedly over the years to find clarity, perspective, focus, meaning, momentum and purpose. They are questions which have helped me identify my reasons, goals, drivers and values and to build a corresponding operating system, in order to (hopefully) live an aligned, fulfilling and meaningful life. Sometimes I get it right. Sometimes not. If you're familiar with my work, you'll be familiar with most of the themes and ideas I explore but perhaps think of it as a repository of powerful questions which encapsulate my philosophy and might be valuable on your journey of self-discovery and personal empowerment. S1 Ep 1470#1470 Therapy By Another Name - Dr. Lillian Nejad

Some people do well with traditional meditation. I don't. I love it as an idea (and have recommended it) but for me, I find working out, nature and music to be much more calming, aligning and meditative. For some people it's a very effective tool in the old mind-management toolkit but not for me. Some people get great results by sitting down with a professional and talking about their problems but I don't. I like to work through things myself. I don't pretend there's not an issue or problem but for me, talking about the problem is (typically) not helpful. And it's not that I'm against meditation or therapy (of course), it's just different things work for different people. Not good or bad, right or wrong, just different. S1 Ep 1469#1469 Aging Disgracefully - Brad Cunningham

Brad Cunningham from the Fit Shop is back on deck and this time we talk about staying (or getting) functional, strong and healthy as we head into our 'mature' years. Part of my health mission is to encourage and support people in improving their strength, fitness and physical performance (capacity) at an age when some 'experts' would advise anyone over fifty to "go gently and age gracefully" (whatever TF that means). S1 Ep 1467#1467 Not Impressed - Harps & Tiff

Is it a good idea to try to 'impress someone’ or can it lead to the opposite of what you were trying to create; disconnection not connection, less respect not more, a negative experience, not a positive one? To what extent can we 'be ourselves' in front of people, while still finding a way to connect with different personalities, expectations, communication styles, social groups and cultures? What causes me to 'feel a certain way' (good or bad) when you say a particular thing; is it the actual words or is it my interpretation of (and response to) those words? Is the experience of 'being offended' a personal reaction (created by me, for example) or is it the unavoidable outcome of your 'offensive words'? All this and more gets explored in this TYP chin-wag. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1466#1466 Is Sunscreen A Scam? - David Gillespie

The first fifteen minutes of this chat was strangely about our collective experience (David, Tiff and I) with recreational drugs. Let's just say that, as a group, we're not exactly party animals and underwhelming' might be the appropriate adjective. Having said that, Tiff has "pulled a few cones” (whatever that means) in her younger years, so there's that (lol). The more sophisticated part of the conversation focused on how sunscreen came into existence (it's only been around for 76 years), how effective it is (or isn't) for protecting us against cancer, the astounding increase in the incidence of melanoma despite a huge increase in awareness, education and sunscreen use and lots more. *Spoiler alert.. sunscreen isn't a scam (as such) but it might not be the magic pill we thought it was.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1465#1465 Good Or Bad Therapy? - Daniel Ellenberg

Dr. Daniel Ellenberg is back and of all our chats over the last few years, this is my favourite. I love how he thinks and explains, what can be complicated topics, in an uncomplicated manner. This time we talk about good and bad therapy, why 'talking about it' doesn't work for everyone, the idea of a 'self-audit' (what's my life telling me?), our capacity to change the way we think, our evolutionary need to be part of a group, the 'people-pleaser' virus, our ability and willingness to 'unlearn' and lots more. S1 Ep 1464#1464 Is Your Thinking A Problem? - Harps

Sometimes our thoughts empower us to bigger and better; to growth, to learning, to positive action and of course, to success. In this episode, Lisa and I talk about what makes a great coach and why. For Michelle Lee, being the first woman in the world to row the Pacific Ocean solo, unassisted and without stopping, was her version of escaping the matrix. 15,000 kilometres, Mexico to Australia, 240 days, rowing for 12 hours a day, converting sea water into drinking water, technical challenges, physical and medical challenges, crazy weather, losing 19kgs, total isolation, eight months of mostly dehydrated food (6 meals a day and still couldn't keep up with her energy needs) and a whole new world of self-discovery. Also known as scammers, schemers and hackers... cyber-thieves (as I call them) are scum (as I also call them) who want to rip off your mum, your grandma, your kids and of course, you. TYP's very own Tiff got hacked this week and so we fired a few timely questions at our resident geek and spoke about a few personal security strategies. We also covered how Al is now conducting job interviews, Patrick's mate who claimed his porn expenses as a tax deduction (wait till you hear the rationale), people opening tech-free cafes (zero phones or devices allowed), customers complaining about the lack of buttons, knobs and dials in modern cars, why electric cars might not be the environmental hero after all, what NASA and Google are doing to save tigers (there's only 4,500 left) and lots more. They want me to make them feel good about the thing they've already done or the thing they're going to do. David Gillespie is a polymath. That is, he knows a lot about a lot. He has a voracious appetite for learning and a few years ago, when all of his six kids(!) were in school, he did a deep dive into the educational system in Australia, in an effort to gainer a clearer understanding of how it all worked, or in some instances, didn't work. Among other things, one of the outcomes of his investigation is the amazing charity he set up (with the help of many incredible teachers); freeschool.org.au. It is a totally free resource created to help Australian students and it's built around the current curriculum (2024), for students undertaking years 7 to 12. Kind of weird for a teenager to be obsessed with personal development and my unique style of.. er.. teaching but nonetheless, he was. We’ve been connected ever since and now at the geriatric age of 35, he’s a dad of two, husband of one, successful businessman, gifted creative and not unlike me, something of a man-child. Shannah Kennedy and Collen Callander have just released a new book called ‘Elevate: Unlock Your Extraordinary Potential’ and apart from the great discussion we had about their book, work and philosophy, what I loved about these ladies is that, at a time when some people are starting to slow down and wind down (in their fifties), these two powerhouses are building new businesses products and programs, breathing life into new ideas and creations, learning new things, writing new books, falling down, getting up, taking chances and inspiring others (of all ages) to do the same. S1 Ep 1447#1447 The Hijacking of Your Mind - Harps

The hijacking of our minds is a silent epidemic. In the digital age, the concept of mind hijacking has transcended the boundaries of science fiction, becoming a palpable reality that affects billions of individuals around the globe. This phenomenon isn't always orchestrated by malevolent forces in a dark room but it is a consequence of the intricate interplay between technology, psychology, and the insatiable appetite of the modern economy for our attention, our data and of course, our money. Someone or something is always trying to 'sell you'; it could be a product, a program, a philosophy, a religion, a story or an image, but they can't sell you anything if you're not paying attention, so their priority is to get your attention at all costs. Their mission is to make you look. And keep looking. Or listening. To make you stay. To get you engaged. No matter what. To make you believe you need whatever it is they're selling. To hijack your mind.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Over the years, there have been so many things that I thought I needed, but actually didn't. Things I thought I needed to do, or be, or have. And not only did I not need them but some of the things I believed I needed, were actually anchors and barriers to my growth, resilience, development and ultimately, my success. In many cases, my beliefs about what I needed (to survive and thrive) were objectively wrong. I started out this solo episode thinking I'd talk for thirty (or so) minutes and ended up chatting for more than double that (only child, chatty AF). Enjoy. S1 Ep 1440#1440 The Double Life - Nikki Morrison

Nikki Morrison and I are peas in a pod. Kind of. Okay, I'm a much bigger pea than her but peas, nonetheless. We have both spent much of our lives dealing with body dysmorphia, exercise obsession, disordered eating (me), an eating disorder (her), secret behaviours, control issues (around food and exercise), seeking approval and validation through our appearance, self-esteem issues and self-induced exhaustion from pretending to the world that we (both exercise Scientists, btw) had our sh*t together, when we totally didn't. Anyway, this episode is a chat about all that and lots more.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1439#1439 What's Optimal For You? - Harps & Tiff

What's 'the best'... diet, lifestyle, exercise program, type of meditation, anxiety treatment, sleep protocol, career, communication style, leadership style, learning style (and so on)? You and I both know that my best job could be your worst job (mostly likely would be). Your optimal diet could make me sick. Your best workout might injure me. The movie that makes you laugh, might make me bored. The drug that alleviates your nerve pain, might make me hallucinate (actually happened to me). The ideology that makes you feel valued and connected might make feel suspicious. The motorbike ride that gives me joy, might give you terror. In life, your challenge is not to find 'the' best anything but rather, your best everything.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1437#1437 A Momentary Death - Brandon Griffith

Just like my training partner Mark (AKA The Crab), Brandon Griffith had a cardiac arrest (not a heart attack) and died for 17 minutes (the same amount of time as The Crab - weird huh?). Brandon who was a highly trained police officer (member of S.W.A.T.) was at home, stood up from his chair, took a few steps, his heart stopped and he fell forward, putting his head through a wall, dead. Oh and by the way, at the time, he was the ripe old age of.. 26! What happened during those 17 minutes and after his subsequent recovery is a fascinating chat. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
