128 REVISIT COLIN COWIE: Part 1 Groundbreaking Luxury Experiences
REVISIT: Colin Cowie is a top designer for all things weddings—as well as galas, charitable events, corporate and destination celebrations. He's beloved by the likes of Oprah, Jerry Seinfeld, Elton John, Michael Jordan, Bruce Willis, Jennifer Aniston, and countless other A-list celebrities. Ever since Colin arrived in Los Angeles from Kitzwe, Zambia at the height of apartheid in 1985, his professional life has soared. While teaching cooking lessons at age 23, he met a woman whose chance encounter soon led to his first wedding assignment for a local bachelor: Hugh Hefner. Thirty-one years of parties, weddings, and multi-day events later, he's never created the same event twice. The degree to which Colin cares for and personalizes his work is not just unmatched, it's nearly indescribable, and precisely why he's consistently relied upon by the most discerning of clientele. He learns everything there is to know about his clients, over hors-d'oeuvres and champagne, until the event he crafts (and the journey on which he takes his clients to get there) is not just perfectly tailored, but permanently unique. When he isn't designing weddings and Fortune 500 parties, Oprah Winfrey's Legends Ball or Guinness Book of World Records-breaking pyrotechnic shows abroad, Colin works as "creator-director" for elite brands like NetJets, Dom Pérignon, and Bergdorf Goodman; even private islands. Idyllic as Colin's life may sound, and so often is, he and Andy extend their conversation today beyond the exclusive glamour of the luxury events industry to the unseen challenges once faced in the midst of the great recession, Colin's daily routines (from meditation and "I am" statements to nightcaps), professional strategies, and the critical value of humility and gratitude. 124 THE NEXT LEVEL: LYNN EASTON: PART 2 - Branding, Pricing & Choosing A Team
Today we have part two of our interview with Lynn Easton. Lynn is a very popular planner and designer in the industry, who also speaks at various conferences. She has created Easton Destination Events, a luxury destination wedding design and planning company that works worldwide, with offices in Charlottesville, Virginia, and Charleston, South Carolina. Our guest co-host for today is the prestigious Sean Low. Sean has a consulting firm called The Business of Being Creative, with a focus on providing practical advice to those in the business of being creative. Today Sean and Andy discuss Lynn's signature, which is that no two events of hers ever look the same. One of the ways that she manages to achieve that is by picking just the right team for each client. And this means that she has to create an entirely different team for every single client. Today they also discuss creating legacy clients, Lynn's concept of high-touch service, and the very sensitive issue of pricing. Lynn has about ten favorite photographers to give her portfolio diversity and she also has a number of different vendors/partners that she works with. Her job is to match the personalities of these various partners with that of each client, in order to make the client most comfortable. Show Highlights: Lynn's brilliance is in her understanding of the personality of each client. Lynn's work is really about creating an emotional fit, to get the work done in a way that's going to be meaningful to, and create a better experience for everybody. Lynn's concept of 'high touch' really takes things to the next level. Small, subtle touches, based on the individual client, can really make all the difference. Lynn really knows who all her people are, and what they're about, so nothing is templated. Lynn doesn't want to be everything to everybody, yet she's very specific about what really matters to her at the level of detail, connection, and relationship. It all starts with having the ability to truly understand who's in front of you. To Lynn, the creatives, or partners that she works with are most important to her. You need to hire the very best creatives that you can find- and then you need to really listen to them. There are many different layers to Lynn's process. Some of the stories that Lynn has told about how she brings her concept of high-touch to the weddings she creates. What creates a moment, or a memory. Lynn loves social media because it allows her to keep up with her clients. Lynn's concept of charging a percentage rather than a flat fee works because she's so candid and transparent. It's really all about the best fit for the client- and not the money. 111 REVISIT DAVID STARK: Creativity in Design, Creativity in Business
REVISIT: "You're only as good as your last party." This old adage is something that renowned event producer and designer David Stark holds in high regard. David has produced events for noteworthy celebrities like Glenn Close and Brad Pitt, organizations like Saturday Night Live, the Whitney Museum, and the Metropolitan Opera, has 5 books published, and the list goes on in similar fashion. David's career in design started in college when he pursued studies in painting. After finishing graduate school in New York with an MFA in painting, he realized he, in fact, did not want to become a painter. While waiting tables in New York in his twenties, he and his boyfriend began diving into the floral scene, slowly growing from a small job operation to eventually a larger-than-life business 12 years later. Though David didn't end up becoming a professional painter, he attributes his success in large part to what he learned in art school; not to paint, but to solve problems creatively, how to put together teams, and invent things. That process is what carries through to today for David, noting that putting together a team is the most creative act you can pull off as well as creating a business structure for your company. Andy and David also chat about his favorite events he has produced, and he explains the mindset he uses when approaching a new event. For David, it's all about creating relationships with people, pushing boundaries in the designs he creates, and always staying a little nervous because that means you're trying something completely original. Listen to the full interview to hear what inspires David, how he pulled off creating event decor out of toilet paper, and how he balances the creative and business aspects of his company. 108 KIMI WERNER: Trusting Your Inner Voice
In today's conversation, Andy talks with Kimi Werner, the U.S. National Spearfishing Champion of 2008 who transformed her passion for discovery and the sea to inspire others and travel the world. Why is Andy releasing this episode on The Wedding Biz? Because it's a very touching and courageous story, and ultimately deeply inspiring. Kimi's story is about something all of us creatives, in the event industry, can resonate with, which is to fully trust our inner yearnings and choose how we want to express ourselves and how we want to experience this world in which we live. Kimi grew up in a family of six, in a small shack in a secluded area of Haiku, Maui, where her best friend was a pig named "Muddy." She may not have had any close human friends beyond her family before she moved to a more traditional neighborhood at age seven, but Kimi always believed that as long as she could explore the wild natural world she would never feel alone. When she wasn't roaming free on land, Kimi was underwater. At age four, Kimi began to watch her father free dive and spearfish for food. Seeing firsthand how fresh food brought her friends and family together, Kimi discovered the joy of cooking creatively at a young age and later attained a degree in Culinary Arts. Throughout her time in Oahu, she actively pursued her love of painting by taking as many art classes as she could and, for nearly four years, became an art teacher. After quitting her teaching job in her mid-20s, Kimi re-discovered her own passion for spearfishing. The ocean had long been a source of sustenance, inspiration and adventure, and Kimi found herself longing for the life she once knew in nature. During this period of time, she trained on her own, honed her free diving skills, and started to be mentored by and work alongside elite professional spearfishers and free divers. As a result, Kimi can hold her breath for 4:45, and at free-dive to depths of 159 feet. Only a few years later, she became the U.S. National Spearfishing Champion—and then her art really began to sell. She soon started to win international competitions and gain multiple sponsorships; however, it wasn't all that much later that Kimi purposely left the professional world of competition and faced the biggest challenge of her life. During this period of time, she lost all her sponsorships and many friends in the industry. Her story of how she recovered is truly remarkable and profoundly inspiring. Kimi still pursues all of her passions, including being a sought-after speaker, though completely on her own terms now. Her daily life is a pure fusion of her talents, rooted in sustainability and geared toward a healthy future for our global community.
