160 KIANA UNDERWOOD/TULIPINA: Setting Fear Aside to Embrace Ambition and Find That Spark of Creative Genius

Floral artist Kiana Underwood is the celebrated owner of Tulipina an internationally renowned floral design studio that creates bespoke experiences for luxury weddings throughout the world. She has been named one of the top wedding floral designers in the US and is the most followed floral designer on Instagram. She is the author of Color Me Floral and the host of sold-out international workshops. She has also been featured in many magazines, and her work is always in demand. Kiana and I talk about the importance of bravery and pushing past fear to create what you desire. Her life and her work is an example of how she has pushed passed this fear to create the art and life that she wants. She shares her story of moving to the US and how freeing her new school experience was. We get to learn how flowers were always part of her life and culture, but it took bravery, tenacity, and out-of-the box thinking to make floral art her business and life's work. Show Highlights: [00:23] Andy discovers that Kiana and her husband Nate recently moved to a small farm in the Hudson Valley area. [01:23] Kiana explains how the beauty of nature makes up for being so far away from the city. [01:40] Kiana shares how her grandfather had a beautiful garden, and her mother always had fresh cut flowers in the house. [04:01] She was searching for something, and her husband suggested that flower arranging could be a business and an outlet for her. [05:48] Kiana shares some personal history about how she left Iran in the 1990s and came to the US when she was a sophomore in high school. [06:50] Her school experience in the US was amazing. She was struggling in Iran, but when she came here she realized that teachers cared about her, and it helped her flourish. [08:29] She loved experiencing cultural diversity and being accepted which gave her strength and self-confidence. [09:33] There are so many amazing florists in San Francisco and Kiana was somewhat new to the industry. It was a little bit scary. [12:20] Kiana shares how important it is to push past the fear and take a chance. Whether it's coming to the US, moving across the country to a farm, or starting a fledgling floral arrangement business. [12:56] Challenge number one was navigating the San Francisco flower markets. It took a while for Kiana to be known before people were helpful. [14:08] It took two or three years of putting her work with Tulipina on Instagram and the Internet before her work started getting the respect it deserved. [15:32] During these experimental years, she had to learn the names of the flowers as she was exploring and finding her own style. [16:14] She also got the cold shoulder from the industry once she started being well-known on social media. [16:53] Each week, she would go to the flower market and explore and see what she could create, because that is what gave her happiness. [17:25] Kiana would make arrangements and put them online and interest slowly began to grow. [18:29] Kiana used amazing photography to promote herself for free on Instagram. [19:23] She also made daring design decisions with color and flower types. [21:19] Kiana creates what looks good, she thinks of her work as a painting. [22:35] She is moved by music in a way that could make her cry. This drives her creativity. [24:24] She brings art to events. She doesn't want to be a mass production florist. [25:03] Because the art is so individual she only takes on a limited number of weddings a year. [25:37] Kiana shares her process. [26:44] Kiana shares the story of one of her favorite brides who also loved color, had a budget and was willing to step outside of the box and do something special. [28:48] Kiana shares one of the craziest wedding experiences she had where there was a generational design clash between the bride and the mother of the bride. [34:43] Kiana wants to conduct two or three amazing workshops a year. Her first one this year was in Rome, and it sold out. She wants to mostly concentrate on her destination weddings. [36:29] Kiana shares another experience where she pushed past her fear and had her first international workshop in Russia. [40:19] Kiana's husband has started working with the business full-time which has really helped balance business and family time. [42:26] Currently they are into their five-year plan of building out their property in New York. Kiana is also going to continue to work on amazing events. 156 RAY THOMPSON: Light Design & The Choreography Of Emotion

Lighting designer and owner of Images by Lighting Ray Thompson is here today to talk about storytelling with lighting for events and designing lighting for lux weddings. He has over 30 years of experience and an amazing passion for creative design. He also pioneered the modern event lighting industry. His company has created the lighting for events at major corporations like Adobe, Taco Bell, Gillette, NFL Super Bowl and many more. He has also been involved in premieres and events for major movies and entertainers like HBO, DreamWorks Pictures, Disney/Buena Vista, Elton John and more. In this episode, Ray shares how he got started and was able to transition his passion into a career and an award-winning company. He also talks about the evolution of lighting, changes in technology, tools smaller designers can use to create amazing lighting, how he finds inspiration and more. Show Highlights: [00:15] Ray Thompson is one of the true icons in the industry for what he does with lighting design. [00:34] Lighting is critical to telling a story no matter what you're doing. [00:49] Many years ago, Ray began lecturing and educating people about lighting and what can be done with lighting and where events were going. [01:28] When Ray was a kid, he was always good with science and math. His dad owned a vending machine company, and Ray had access to the broken machines, so he would create lighting installations in his bedroom. [01:59] He would even sequence lights to music. He wasn't sure how to make a career out of this, so he went into electrical engineering. [02:55] He moved to LA and was an electrical engineer for Hughes Aircraft. [03:11] While working at Hughes Aircraft, Ray had created some lighting sculptures in his apartment, which a well-known event professional saw and he tells the story of how that led to building a clientele. [04:01] Ray shares how one of his first big breaks came from Allan Carr. [05:26] Once props and scenery became decorations for parties, lighting also became a natural element. [06:19] Lighting is a dance from the moment you enter an event. Light creates an experience and storyline through color, texture, and intensity. [07:47] Ray is very spiritual. He loves color and the study of chakra and color on your being. [11:36] Ray directs the events, and lights can be used to create total theater for events. [14:33] We discuss Ray's concept of the relation between lighting and "the choreography of emotion." [16:31] Ray likes to be involved early on in the design process and discusses why. [16:56] We learn the behind the scenes process behind a project from proposal to end design. [22:41] Messaging for brands like Tesla involves a unique lighting design approach for a product reveal. [23:38] Ray tells the story behind designing the lighting for the wedding for a king in Dubai. [27:09] We get to hear about lighting projects such as the Governor's Ball for the Emmys, the Oscars Green Room, the Super Bowl, and studio and movie premieres. [31:00] He has worked with very high-end entertainers from Elton John to Katy Perry. [32:19] Ray shares his secrets for production efficiency and profitability that he's learned over the years. [35:11] Ray shares how lighting technology has evolved since he began in the industry. [38:49] LED screens will get cheaper and cheaper for video walls. [39:24] Ray reveals the best way for industry professionals to work with lighting designers. [40:22] Battery packed pin spots and battery packed uplights are great cost-effective and simple ways for planners and designers to notch things up a level. [41:07] Going to concerts is inspiration and relaxation for Ray. He also gets inspired by the very creative producers that he works with. [42:42] Andy thought the video screens and the lighting at the Ed Sheeran concert were amazing. [43:42] Ray loves what he does. This video needs to be added to the notes. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/l8xwuqffuii8i16/AADzB_5lPGC7YZB9zQe2nW5la/ray%20movie%201.MOV?dl=0 This episode is sponsored by Kushner Entertainment www.kushnerentertainment.com. 134 GREG LAWSON: Photography & Love Of The Planet

In this week's discussion, photographer Greg Lawson takes Andy through his museum-like gallery in Sedona, Arizona, to explore the fundamentals of his philosophy on human nature. This is a departure from the typical episode, released on The Wedding Biz, in that Greg is not an event industry photographer. As Andy says, this is an unusually grounding conversation which he and so many of us need to have from time to time in our hectic lives. Our conversation with Greg is unlike any you'd heard with a traditional photographer. Greg got his first camera when he was 14 and considers himself a naturalist and discoverer at heart. He will leave his home and on a whim, for one to four weeks at a time, to simply drive, experience new cultures, and photograph whatever speaks to him. Greg is on a mission to share the positive side of the world with others, and photography helps him achieve that goal. His latest project, "The Principle Movement," emerged from the idea that principles—like empathy, integrity, loyalty—are the basis for our positivity. He believes a greater focus on principles would allow for a more just society. More than anything, he highlights the beauty of human nature, and why people and animals at their core are the same.
