Ep 892/22/23: Time To Rethink Your College Savings Strategy

A couple of weeks ago I talked with you about how college is becoming free. If you want to hear that bit, the link to it is in today's show notes. Dozens of colleges and universities, as I've told you, are making college free these days for low-income families. A lot of states are now doing that, too, and not just for low-income households, but for middle class families, too. And hundreds of companies are now paying for college for their employees. It's the newest employee benefit. So I said, you really need to rethink your college planning strategy if college is going to be free. Do you still need to save for college? Well, guess what? Thanks to Congress (who loves to give freebies away to voters), yes, saving for college just might still make sense, even if you never have to pay for college, even if your kids never go to college. ----- Links from today's show: SECURE 2.0 Act of 2022 Brought to you by: Global X ETFs Invesco QQQ Schwab ----- Subscribe to podcast updates The Truth About Your Future website The Truth About Crypto Have a question for Ric? Ep 862/16/23: The Broken Promise of Public Pensions

It's Thursday, February 16th. We've been talking about scams the past couple of days. Crypto has gotten a lot of criticism lately about scams, even though all the evidence shows you're no more likely to get scammed in crypto than you are in any other asset class. Crooks are crooks. But there's a really interesting story in Forbes - which is the bigger scam: crypto fraud or the lack of transparency at our nation's public pension plans? According to Anessa Santos, public pension funds are the bigger scam. The reason, she says, public plans have been promising all of us that you contribute a portion of your pay to the plan while you're working and you get guaranteed lifetime income throughout your retirement. But that's a lie, she says. And I agree with her. ----- Links from today's show: Forbes: Pension Funds or Cryptocurrency, What's the Bigger Scam? Ep 802/8/23: Laid Off in Your 50s or 60s?

It's Wednesday, February 8th. Yesterday, I talked about the fact that you'll likely need millions of dollars in savings in order to retire in financial comfort. That raised a question from William in Albuquerque. He sent me an email that said the following: "Ric, no one wants to confront age discrimination. I think it's a potentially huge obstacle to anyone's efforts to achieve financial independence by retirement. I lost my well-paid job at 58 and I went to an unemployment seminar that was sponsored by the state of New Mexico, and the presenter said if you're over 40, getting a new job that is equivalent to the job you just lost is improbable, if not impossible..." ----- Links from today's show: Replay of Feb. 7 Webinar, What's Next for Crypto in 2023 ----- Brought to you by: Global X ETFs Invesco QQQ Schwab ----- Subscribe to podcast updates The Truth About Your Future website The Truth About Crypto Have a question for Ric? Ep 772/3/23: Why Crypto is Here to Stay

Tom Emmer, a member of Congress, just issued a tweet and he said, "Crypto is here to stay. I will keep advocating for policies that advance crypto innovation and adoption in the US because crypto is more than a financial investment. It's about restoring liberty and choice to individuals". Wow. That's brand new coming from Tom Emmer. And he's not alone. Kevin McCarthy, the speaker of the House, way back in 2019, he said, "I like Bitcoin. I want the government to start using blockchain". That was in 2019 when Kevin McCarthy was not the Speaker of the House. Well, now he is, and he's in a much stronger position to dictate that the government in fact start using blockchain. So when you have these major political leaders embracing and endorsing this asset class, well, you know, things are coming. And this isn't just a Republican thing. Democrats, too, are highly supportive. Janet Yellen last year called blockchain technology transformative. Maxine Waters, the ranking minority member of the House Financial Services Committee, she said last summer, "We're in a new digital assets space race. America can't be left behind". And Elizabeth Warren last year said, "Let's do a central bank digital currency. Yes, I think it's time". ----- Brought to you by: Global X ETFs Invesco QQQ Schwab ----- Subscribe to podcast updates The Truth About Your Future website The Truth About Crypto Have a question for Ric? It's Tuesday, January 31st. Guess what? ETFs have now hit their 30th anniversary. Today, that ETF has $370 billion in assets. It's still the largest ETF in the world. ETFs have become the most popular investment vehicle in the country. Ep 701/25/23: Why You'll be as Healthy at Age 95 as You were at 55

Yesterday, I blasted TIAA over their stupid survey that forced people to decide whether 60-year-olds would live to 76, 82 or 88. And then they said the correct answer is 82, when in fact the real answer is that if you're alive in 2030, you'll probably live to age 100 or beyond. Ep 681/23/23: A Possible Recession, Layoffs, The Hemline Index, and More

It's Monday, January 23rd. Tomorrow at noon eastern time, I'm presenting a 90-minute webinar for the Museum of American Finance and the New York Public Library. The webinar's on Financial Planning in the Age of Longevity. The webinar is open to the public and you can register for free in the show notes below. Some 63% of Americans say that inflation pushed them off track financially. 59% are living paycheck to paycheck. 60% say they can't pay an unexpected expense of $500. 54% have reduced the amount that they're putting into their retirement accounts because of inflation. And 43% say they've withdrawn money from their retirement accounts to pay their bills. And you do have an explanation for this, don't you? Well, we all know the tremendous pressure that the economic environment has placed us under in 2022 because inflation was near double digits - 8.7% Social Security increases based on the rate of inflation. And we know that the stock market had a terrible year, the bond market had a terrible year, crypto had a terrible year. Today I want to talk about experiential technologies - not exponential - experiential. Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, the Metaverse: these breakthrough technologies are helping businesses and consumers function more efficiently. And all of this is going to transform the way we shop, the way we play travel, drive, learn, conduct business, even how we make new scientific discoveries. Some of this will be stuff you've either never heard of or don't understand. Things like the Metaverse or IoT, the Internet of Things. But you certainly know about robotics and AI and e-commerce. Ep 651/18/23: Why Housing Prices May Fall by 38% in Some Markets

It's January 18th. Yesterday I told you that real estate prices are going to fall this year by a lot - 10% or 20% or more in some markets. I've gotten a lot of questions asking me why I said that. Well, here's why. It's all about home affordability. You can't buy a house unless you can afford to buy a house. I mean, you might not be able to afford a candy bar, but no one stops you from buying it. If you don't have cash in your pocket, you just use a credit card. But if you want to buy a house, you need tens of thousands of dollars in cash just for the down payment. And then you've got to qualify for the mortgage. So here are the numbers. If you want to buy the average US home today based on today's mortgage rates, the average household in America would spend 30% of their income on their mortgage. Can the average household afford that? Zillow calls the situation bleak. ----- Links from today’s show: National Association of Realtors research Home onChain Teller protocol The Truth About Crypto Today’s sponsors: Global X ETFs Invesco QQQ ----- Subscribe to podcast updates The Truth About Your Future website Have a question for Ric? Ep 641/17/23: Which did More Damage to Your Portfolio Last Year, Bonds or Bitcoin?

It's Tuesday, January 17th. Do you remember what I told you to do one year ago? Yeah, you don't remember. But I do. Because I was right. I told you one year ago to get out of bonds. I sure hope you did. The Federal Reserve, as you know, raised interest rates more quickly last year than at any time since the 1980s. And the result was that bonds ended up having their worst year ever. Yeah. 10 year Treasuries lost more money last year than in any year since 1788. Treasuries, in fact, not only lost a lot of money last year, they lost a lot of money the year before that. Two years in a row, the bond market fell in value. The last time that happened was 1959. Ep 611/11/23: Why You Must Completely Rethink Your Approach to College Planning

It's Wednesday, January 11. I talked with you yesterday about Social Security. This is the real crisis that America's retirees are facing. Let me shift the conversation back a few generations to, not today's seniors, but to today's high school students, those who are aspiring to go to college. According to a new survey, 77% of households say college is difficult to afford. Three out of four families say they can't afford college. Half of them say it's not affordable at all. These days, you pay a ton of money to go to school. You're getting suckered into bad deals that are promoted by the school so they can earn even more money off of you than merely the tuition you're paying. Ep 591/9/23: My Tale of Two Medical Experiences

Today is Monday, January 9th. Welcome to The Truth About Your Future. I'm going to share with you a couple of very personal stories today. One of them horribly serious, the other one a little bit lighter, although still highly annoying, but with importance - both of these messages and lessons for all of us. You know, it's so often people, when they go through a personal medical experience, they share that story with an admonition: Don't let this happen to you... Be forewarned… Here's how you can avoid it…Here's what I wish I knew… that kind of thing… and those kinds of stories always kind of annoyed me because I'm like, yeah, yeah, yeah, sure. Well, I'm about to share a couple of those stories with you and with the hope that there will be a lesson learned for you. It certainly has been lessons learned for Jean and me for the past several days. Thank you to Inova Fairfax Medical! Ep 581/6/23: Personalized Medicine Brings Longevity Tomorrow - and Investment Opportunities Today

It's Friday, January 6th. Welcome to the podcast. Long show, big show today. Really excited. A great interview with Dr. Ken Dychtwald, one of the world's leading experts on aging. Before we get into it, though, I want to talk about a new report that has been produced by Global X ETFs. It's their outlook for 2023 and beyond. It's a special report that they published in coordination with the Wall Street Journal. And I'm going to be talking with you about this report over many, many weeks, because it's got a huge amount of fabulous content and it's all in the subject of exponential technologies, also called thematic investing. And I just want to share with you one snippet from Global X's outlook for 2023. Personalized medicine. You know, I'm a really big fan of exponential technologies. I created an Exponential Technologies ETF myself years ago, and my last book, The Truth about Your Future, was all about exponential technologies. My personal portfolio is significantly overweighted in exponential technologies, and I am firmly believing that you should have 20 to 30% of your equity portfolio in exponential technologies. And the first one I want to focus on with you is personalized medicine. This is one of the most important new waves of technology. It's literally going to change and extend your life. Ep 571/5/23: Why You Shouldn’t Care That We’re Headed to a Recession

Yes, inflation hit a 4-decade high in 2022, the cost of goods and energy is up globally, and half of economists say a recession is in our future. According to the IMF, 2023 will be the worst year for the global economy since 2001. But investors and advisors need to keep this fundamental truth in mind: there’s a huge difference between the stock market and the economy. You need to know the key indicators and not get overly pessimistic – there are opportunities here. Ep 5112/3/22: Disturbing trends hitting pension plans and stunning healthcare innovations

Some of the newest technological advances in healthcare are making news: there’s a new soft implantable cooling device that could provide pain relief on demand. This is a big deal because 20% of people suffer from chronic pain. Scientists at the Institute of Cancer Research have genetically modified the herpes simplex virus – that’s the virus that gives you a cold sore. And they're using this modification to attack cancerous tumors. It has apparently cured one person so far. A biotech company in New York has used 3D printing to make a body part with a patient’s own cells; they’re calling this a stunning advance in the field of tissue engineering. There is a disturbing new trend happening: IBM has been making some major changes to its pension plan. And you need to be aware of the message this is sending, especially if you rely on or plan to rely on your own pension. If you took advantage of one of the rules Congress enacted for the 2020 CARES Act that allowed you to withdraw money from your IRA or 401 (K) during the pandemic, even if you weren’t 59.5 years old, you have a really cool opportunity to get a refund on the income taxes you paid on that money. An interview with Felix Kwan from Edelman Financial Engines about the impact the current markets have on charitable giving. Ep 4811/12/2022: The Truth About the Collapse of FTX – What does this mean long-term for crypto?

FTX, the world's second largest crypto exchange, has announced that the company is broke, that they aren't able to handle withdrawal requests from their crypto exchange platform. Now you've probably heard of FTX. FTX slapped their logo on the uniforms of umpires in the World Series. They bought the naming rights to the stadium where the Miami Heat plays – they paid $212 million for that. The founder and CEO of FTX is Sam Bankman-Fried – 32 years old and worth $32 billion, at least until this week. And he not only was on the cover of Time Magazine, but he just recently contributed $39 million to Democrat Political Action Committees, making himself one of the largest political contributors in the country. Now, we need to unwind all of this and talk about what it means for crypto – the impact on Bitcoin and other digital assets. Ep 4410/15/22: More on President Biden's student loan forgiveness, a talk with CNBC's Bob Pisani, and the radical lifestyle change that is retirement

Recently you heard me talk about the president's student loan proposal, and you know that I strongly oppose the president's debt forgiveness plan. But all that said, there's no question that too many people owe too much money to student loans, and this dilemma is creating too much of a burden on them, as well as on our society overall, and our economy. So there's no question we do need to fix this situation. We do need to take action. But the loan forgiveness program proposed by the president isn't the right way to go about it; loan forgiveness should be offered, but for far fewer people, not 43 million who earn as much as a quarter of a million dollars each year. I'm really excited to bring on a very special guest to the program, my good friend Bob Pisani. You know him well. He's the senior markets correspondent for CNBC and he's just written a brand new book, Shut Up And Keep Talking: Lessons on Life and Investing from the Floor of the New York Stock Exchange. The book is out October 18. You can buy it right now on Amazon or your favorite bookseller. One of the things that we all kind of face with hesitation is our retirement. I mean, sure, we're going to age. We're going to eventually leave our job. It might be voluntary. On the other hand, it may be forced. Either way, we're facing one of the most radical lifestyle changes of our entire lives. I mean, think back to the last time you had such a radical change in lifestyle. Getting married certainly was one. Moving to a new home - that's a biggie. Having children - for sure. Getting a new job - that was a big one. But when's the last time any of those happened? Maybe decades ago. Well, now you're on the cusp of facing another lifestyle change: leaving your employment. And some folks enter this with the attitude of saying, my goodness, the best years of my life are behind me. I'm looking at a void. I'm looking at loss. What does this mean for my future? Is life over? And what am I going to be facing? Well, I've got two stories for you to demonstrate that life is just beginning as you age. Ep 4310/8/2022: Effects of the strong U.S. dollar around the world, Congress and insider trading, crypto market predictions, & who is TINA & why is she (or it) dead?

We've seen an incredible array of disarray in the financial markets on a global basis. The U.S. dollar is very, very strong right now, meaning the dollar is worth a lot more than other currencies around the world. That's really good news for the U.S., but it's really bad news for everybody else. Members of Congress -- 18% of them are engaging in insider trading, according to research from The New York Times. 183 senators or representatives did a stock trade in the past three years, and more than half of them sat on committees that gave them insight into the companies whose shares they bought or sold. In Jean's segment, she talks about the value of time and how to cherish and protect it.
