In 2007, he took on the role of Chief Investment Officer, overseeing the management of the company's global Pension and Insurance assets. Gary’s contributions led to his appointment as Assistant Treasurer in 2016 and subsequently as Treasurer. Gary is actively involved in Dow's Disability Employee Network (DEN) and the President and CEO of Liana Limited and Dorinco Reinsurance Company (a wholly owned subsidiary of Dow), in addition to serving on the boards of both companies. He previously worked in Rotterdam and New York in Assistant Treasury roles for Bunge Ltd before a three-year spell as Director of Fortive’s Dubai Treasury Centre. Technology is an important part of everyday life. But few guests on this podcast embrace it more than Royston Da Costa. Royston, Assistant Treasurer at Ferguson Group, makes his second appearance on The Treasury Career Corner. Royston joined Wolseley, now Ferguson Group, in April 2002, and managed the group’s daily debt and cash requirements. In 2010, Royston drove the automation of treasury processes at Ferguson, leading to the implementation of their current treasury management system, a cloud-based solution by Coupa. He was promoted to Assistant Group Treasurer in 2016, and made responsible for the middle office, and in November 2019 assumed responsibility for the Front Office. He continues to drive forward the group’s strategy on treasury technology. Royston previously worked at Sky, Gillette, PolyGram, Seagram, and Vivendi Universal. It’s always interesting to hear how treasury leaders entered the industry. Some had their sights set on treasury from a young age and others take long and winding paths to get there. Today’s guest on The Treasury Career Corner has been involved in treasury since the start of his career but his roles have changed significantly over the years. Dennis Morais, Global Treasury Director at GameStop, joins episode 256 to take us through his journey into treasury, circumventing bumps in the road throughout his career and what his role entails at GameStop. Plus, he provides a helpful piece of advice for treasurers. Dennis’ career began in risk management when he began as Treasury Risk Analyst at Whirlpool in 2001. He filled many roles at Whirlpool, such as Global Risk Manager and Finance Manager at Whirlpool Corporation before concluding his time there as Treasury Manager in 2013. He then made the move to the States, joining CIT as Vice President of Treasury and later ProSight Specialty Insurance as Treasury Director. Dennis was Director of Treasury at The Children’s Place from 2019 until 2021 when he joined GameStop in his current role as Global Treasury Director. He earned MBAs at Universidade Paulista and Fundação Getulio Vargas in his native Brazil. Dennis is a Certified Treasury Professional with extensive knowledge of the treasury, risk management and finance function with diverse international market experience in retail, manufacturing, financial services and private, founder-led corporations. He is a strong leader with an active role in developing and implementing cash management, debt and liquidity strategies, insurance and financial risk management strategies. Ep 254Invaluable Treasury Skills with Adam Richford
There are certain skills and traits that are always going to have top priority, but what are treasury leaders looking for in the next crop of professionals? Today, we revisit episode 33 for a re-run episode with Adam Richford, Director of Treasury & Investor Relations at Renewi plc. When Adam last joined the show, we discussed his journey into the industry, work/life balance, automation and his treasury recruitment processes. As Adam re-joins, we look at how his role has changed since COVID and the benefits of networking, plus Adam provides more invaluable advice for budding Group Treasurers. Adam joined Renewi, Europe’s leading Recycler, in 2016. Renewi is a key actor in the creation of the circular economy. It processes 12m tonnes of waste a year, diverting an industry leading 67% of these materials to recycling and avoiding 3m tonnes of carbon as a result. Back in 2016, he financed the €0.5B Class 1 reverse takeover of the closest competitor, which included a rights issue, placing, and underwritten bank financing. Over the 7 years since then Adam and the team have created an award-winning centralised treasury function and been at the forefront of green and sustainable finance. Since 2019, Adam has extended beyond the treasury function by focusing on leading investor relations in addition to Treasury and Insurance. This has included a secondary listing in Amsterdam in 2020, an increase in sell side coverage from 3 equity analysts to 9, additional sustainability-focused investors joining the register and a share price increase from 180p to 850p. Prior to Renewi, Adam spent two years at Gala Coral Group, managing a high yield debt structure transaction towards the reverse takeover of Ladbrokes plc. He spent the previous 9 years leading the treasury activities of GE Real Estate Europe, supporting over 20 billion dollars of M&A transactions. Adam began his career with EY, helping to build the turnaround and working capital management practice before joining the telco Energis, followed by a stint at a Private Equity Firm, Kelso Place Asset Management. Adam left Durham University with a BA in Economics in 1997 before gaining an FCA in Chartered Accountancy in 2000. He later embarked on a number of ACT qualifications. She obtained an MBA with honours and, due to a continued interest in compliance and governance, Lee-Ann completed the inaugural Financial Compliance Certificate through Chicago-Kent Law School in 2016. In 2021 she was awarded the FCT fellow designation with merit from the Association of Corporate Treasurers in the U.K. Lee-Ann holds the Association of Finance Professionals (AFP) CTP and CTP (CD) Canadian certifications and is recognized as a Subject Matter Expert by the AFP serving on the CTP exam formulation committee since 2008. Lee-Ann has been a member of the AFP Treasury Advisory Group since 2017 and is a current Advisory Board member for NACHA. She has served on the Houston Treasury Management Association Board as President & Chairman and held various other committee roles over the years. Lee-Ann has been a Treasury practitioner for 18 years and held roles in increasing authority in Publicly traded Oil and Gas and construction industries. Joel Campbell Joel Campbell is Chief Financial Officer of TreviPay, the global B2B payments and invoicing network, based in Overland Park, Kansas. He leads the company’s Finance, FP&A, Accounting, Treasury, and Facilities & Procurement functions, with primary focus on managing all financial aspects of the business and the relationship with its private equity ownership team at Corsair Capital. Joel joined TreviPay from H&R Block in Kansas City, Missouri where he served as Vice President, Treasurer and Chief Risk Officer and led Block’s global Treasury and Risk Management functions, focusing on capital structure strategy, treasury operations, banking, rating agency, and debt investor relations, and the company’s insurance & risk management and ERM programs. Prior to H&R Block, Joel was Vice President & Assistant Treasurer at Western Union and held increasingly responsible positions in corporate Treasury at both Ameriprise Financial and Travelers. Since 2018, he has served on the School of Business Administration Advisory Council at Cedarville University and is Chairman of the Board for the Beyond Angel Network where he is a Founding Angel investor and Board Member. Frank Muusse, Head of Treasury at C&A, joins episode 240 to discuss his career to date. Frank explains his early steps into the world of treasury via business analysis, how to evolve your own role in the industry and the importance of finding the right people for your team. Plus, he provides top advice on why treasurers should remain open-minded and keen to learn throughout their careers. Frank began his career as an Applications Manager at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam from 2000 to 2002. He then spent a year and a half as a Business Analyst with Deloitte before embarking on his treasury career. He moved to Wolters Kluwer, initially as Assistant Treasurer, Middle Office, in 2004 before moving to the front office from 2006 to 2009. Next, Frank took up a role as Treasury Advisor for KPN before joining Philips where he filled a number of positions between 2010 to 2016, later working as Head of Corporate Finance for Philips Lighting until 2019. Frank then joined CarNext.com as Head of Treasury in 2019 but switched to a role with the same title at C&A in January 2021, where he remains today. Frank has a degree in Business Economics from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Christian discusses his route into treasury through other finance sectors, why he chose to work in Asia and whether his career path lets him see treasury in a different light. Christian graduated from the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences in 1994 with a degree in Business Administration, Controlling, Trade and Marketing. From 1988, he worked in a number of roles for Deutsche Bank within Corporate Banking, based in his native Germany as well as in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Singapore. From 1999 to 2000, Christian became a Senior Consultant at Ernst & Young Consulting before taking on roles with Siemens AG from 2000 to 2007. After a short spell with Nokia Siemens Networks as VP – Finance and Business Administration, Christian joined Robert Bosch in 2008. He took on his first treasury role as Head, Regional Treasury Asia-Pacific, returning to Singapore and later Shanghai. He has filled a number of other roles across his time there, currently working as VP Head of Department, Global Treasury Front Office, and based in Stuttgart. The world has not been the same since COVID first struck in 2020. Back then, many treasurers were adapting to remote work and acclimatising to the challenges of being out of the office. Now, many professionals have returned to the office, either completely or as part of a hybrid working pattern. In this episode of The Treasury Career Corner, we welcome back Bruce Edlund, now Group Director, Assistant Treasurer at Cloud Software Group. Bruce joined the show back in June 2020, whilst working at Citrix. He explained why he returned to the company, shared his thoughts on technology in treasury and provided tips for young treasurers. Now, Bruce returns with career updates and explains why he thinks hybrid work is here to stay. Bruce Edlund is Group Director, Assistant Treasurer at Cloud Software Group based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was previously Director of Treasury, Senior Director, Assistant Treasurer and Group Director, Assistant Treasurer at Citrix Systems, Inc. also in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He had been Senior Director of Treasury at Citrix in his first stint with the company between 2004 and 2010. He has over 20 years of treasury experience starting as Assistant Treasurer at DIRECTV Latin America and later becoming Director of Global Cash Management at Walmart Stores. His experience in companies of varied size in different industries has given Bruce a wealth of experience in treasury systems and different ways of tackling industry challenges. Prior to corporate treasury, Bruce worked for five years in investment banking in Latin America, primarily at Bank of America. He has an MBA from Thunderbird School of Global Management where he maintains ties and has been a regular guest judge for their FORAD finance competition. He also has BA degrees in Economics and French from California State University, Sacramento. Bruce speaks French and Spanish, learning the languages while studying and working in France, Switzerland, Belgium and Latin America.
