S1 Ep 634636 Lead the Way with Nancy Duarte
“WHEN YOU HAVE A VISION, IT BURNS INSIDE OF YOU.” If you want to find your purpose in life, you need to dream with others in mind. When you find that purpose, you’ll have to lead others. When you do, there’s a lot of responsibility that comes with that. To explain this more, and how to tell if you’re really meant to be a leader, I brought back this clip from Nancy Duarte. Nancy Duarte is the founder of the design firm Duarte, Inc. They have consulted companies and leaders like Apple, Google, GE, and so many more to create the speeches and presentations that have shaped all of the brands we love. Her most recent book is all about how leaders can use storytelling to enroll their teams to follow their vision. You’ll learn all about what it takes to bear the torch of leadership, on Episode 636. S1 Ep 632634 Reverse Disease and Reclaim Your Health with Dr. Rangan Chatterjee
“WE’RE APPLYING 20TH CENTURY THINKING TO 21ST CENTURY PROBLEMS.” If you wake up in the morning and find that your tire is low, what do you do? You go with the quick fix and fill it up with air. What if you go to your car the next day and find it’s low. Do you fill it up again, and again, and again for days, weeks, months? Of course not. You find the root of the problem. You find the nail, or whatever is causing the problem, to have it removed and have it fixed permanently. So why aren’t you doing it with your health? Most of us go to the doctor and get a prescription for pills to fix our chronic problems. We just keep going for the quick fix instead of addressing the root of it. I can’t say every medical condition is this way, but in many cases ongoing problems like depression and diabetes needs to have the root problem examined. Chances are you just need to shift your lifestyle. And that doesn’t mean a drastic change to your life. You can start small. To explain much more than I can, I sat down with the UK's leading doctor, Dr. Rangan Chatterjee. Dr. Chatterjee is a medical doctor who decided to rethink the way we do medicine. He’s decided that physicians need to be more holistic in their approach to treating patients and help their lifestyle as opposed to just giving them a quick fix. He has become the star of the hit BBC series Doctor in the House where he analyzes every aspect of people’s lives to help with their illness. Dr. Chatterjee has made it his goal to simplify the way the average person thinks about healthcare. He’s divided health into four easy pillars that allow anyone with a chronic disease to retake control of their lives. Learn the root cause of most chronic diseases, how to let technology empower us, and the key indicator of how well you will age, on Episode 634. Some Questions I Ask: Why are people not the best they can be? (5:38) You said a disease is an illusion, why is that? (10:16) What’s usually the root cause of people’s chronic disease? (21:17) It’s important to build muscle mass? (33:48) How come medical school isn’t teaching the two most important things to change someone’s health? (39:24) Is there anything in your health that’s lacking? (50:00) When’s the last time you meditated? (52:03) Are you doing a digital detox at night? (54:11) What’s your biggest fear as a human? (1:01:32) In This Episode You Will Learn: Why people eat so much fast food (9:02) The boy that made Rangan reevaluate the medical industry (14:03) Rangan’s first pillar of health (23:54) What the world was like before technology (28:54) Rangan’s new medical course (42:31) What Med schools should be looking for (48:26) The next thing Rangan needs to work on (53:17) Plus much, much more Get more from Lewis! S1 Ep 631633 Let Go of Ego with Ryan Holiday
“CULTIVATE PEOPLE AROUND YOU WHO ARE NOT AFRAID TO TELL YOU YOU THE TRUTH.” Whether you want to admit it or not, you have an ego. Everyone does. We tend to put a bad connotation on it, but in truth a little ego is healthy. Ego can be confidence about yourself and what you do. It can be a challenge if you become successful, because people become afraid of telling you the truth and pointing out your flaws. To keep growing, however, you must surround yourself with people who aren’t afraid to tell you the uncomfortable truths in a polite way. And if you truly respect someone with power over you, you’ll do the same. To go deeper into this, I am bringing back a strong segment from a previous episode with Ryan Holiday. Ryan is a writer and media strategist. When he was 19 years old, he dropped out of college to apprentice under Robert Greene, author of The 48 Laws of Power. He went on to become the director of marketing for American Apparel. His creative agency, Brass Check, has advised clients like Google, TASER, and Complex, as well as many prominent bestselling authors, including Neil Strauss, Tony Robbins and Tim Ferriss (and me). He has worked with huge egos in his career, but what I love about Ryan is his willingness to take on his own ego as well. Learn how to control your ego and help those around you on Episode 633. In This Episode You Will Learn: The spectrum of Ego (00:54) Where confidence comes from (1:33) How to continue your growth (3:02) When people stop listening to the truth they need to hear (3:32) How to tell powerful people the truth (5:18) What to do when you’re right (5:48) Plus much more... S1 Ep 630632 Jay Williams: Life is Not an Accident
“WHAT HAPPEN IF I WERE TO LIVE MY LIFE WITH NO EXCUSE?” When I was injured as a pro athlete I felt I had really lost myself. I felt like my identity was stripped away from me. I began comparing myself to my past -- to what I could have been. I doubted my entire future. Chances are you’ve been through something similar. Maybe it was the loss of a job. Maybe you lost someone you depended on emotionally. I eventually came to a realization. I could continue down this self destructive path, feeling like a helpless victim in a cruel world, or I could take my destiny into my own hands. In the end, I decided to have faith that maybe this happened for a greater cause. I felt like maybe I was meant for something else. Something more important. On this episode of The School of Greatness, I had the chance to sit down with someone who knows a lot about having to reinvent themselves: Jay Williams. If you aren’t familiar with Jay Williams, he’s a former NBA pro. He came from a home that was surrounded by abusive relationships. When he was drafted at a young age, he didn’t know how to handle the fame and money. His ego got in the way, and he ended up in a motorcycle accident and put his career on hold. After a long recovery and massive amounts of physical therapy, he wound up back on the court only to suffer from injuries again. And again. He came to the same cross road: either stay a victim and fall into a life of extreme hardship or take it as a sign he was meant for something else. Today, Jay Williams is a television personality, motivational speaker, and successful businessman. He says that his life, the parts that he values the most, started after his accident. Hear all about his inspirational journey and why it's worth it to believe life happens for a reason, on Episode 632. Some Questions I Ask: What would make this the most powerful interview you’ve ever done? (5:40) What’s your biggest vulnerability? (7:24) Is there anything you’re still suppressing? (12:38) How did your father handle working for you? (16:04) What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned from your father? (18:47) You felt like there was less of a team in the pro league? (24:04) Did you get back on the court for a little bit? (29:12) What was it like when everyone felt entitled to your money? (48:32) Why couldn’t you have a conversation with your fiance about everything that was going on? (56:09) Have you ever tried to facilitate communication between your parents? (1:01:28) In This Episode You Will Learn: The beginnings of his family (6:23) The one lesson Jay would teach his future child (11:11) The abuse he witnessed as a child (14:53) His relationship with his father today (16:55) Jay’s motorcycle accident (21:28) How the people around him influenced his change (27:28) What an advisory board is (40:07) Why some people can’t escape their past identities (48:56) How he was able to successfully shift his career (52:10) What he wishes his dad would say to him that he hasn’t (58:32) How he is going to manage his busy schedule and his family life (1:04:08) Get more from Lewis! S1 Ep 629631 Create the Opposite of Hate with Sally Kohn
"Just because hate feels justified doesn't mean it's justifiable." - Sally Kohn Let's be honest: we've all done things we regret. They may have been when we were kids or adults. They may have affected just ourselves or many people around us. But it's likely we remember doing them because we regret them. This is something that's not easy to talk about. But there's something really valuable in recognizing the parts of ourselves that are capable of doing things we regret. I recently met a woman who gave a TED talk (and has now written a book) about this exact topic. Sally Kohn is a CNN commentator who has attracted huge amounts of haters during her career as a political speaker. As our society has gotten more divided, hate seems to be taking over a lot of actions and discussions. So Sally decided to do a deep dive study on why we hate and what the opposite of that is. She talked to her own haters, she traveled to countries that have experienced genocides, and she discussed the psychological pieces of what's going on. This was a powerful conversation about a topic that isn't always easy to discuss. I really appreciated Sally's willingness and honesty in discussing how we can each shift our habits out of hate and bias and into open-mindedness and respect. No matter what you've been through or what you believe, I know there's something valuable to learn for all of us in Episode 631. Some questions I ask: Do we believe our friend group or the media more? (9:50) How do we start thinking differently about people [versus relying on bias]? (13:10) Why did you start working for Fox News with your point of view? (19:30) How much bullying is happening today in schools? (30:22) How do we start to repair our habits around how we treat each other? (37:03) In this episode you will learn: What getting hate mail taught Sally about her own ability to be mean (3:05) The difference between our brain's hardware and its software (8:15) What happens when we wear "masks" to hide our true identity (18:50) Why it's important to talk to people who believe differently than you do (21:45) How mass atrocities can happen (and be avoided) (27:20) Why we don't usually see ourselves as the starters of hate (38:37) How to forgive and understand haters (40:15) Plus much more... S1 Ep 628630 Love Yourself Unconditionally with Don Miguel Ruiz Jr.
"I am not my past, I am not my future. This is the only place I am able to express my will.” Do you ever have those moments when you replay a certain event in your mind over and over? It becomes so real, it’s almost like you are there. You start thinking, “What could I have done differently? Does this make me a bad person? Could I have handled things better?” I know when this happens I start judging myself. I become my worst critic, obsessing over how I lost my temper here or the person I hurt there. Ultimately, these moments don’t define us. What does define us is right now. What we do at this moment is who we are, and as long as we learned from our mistakes we shouldn’t judge ourselves. We need to forgive ourselves and stop the emotional punishment. To go more into this I wanted to bring you a clip from Don Miguel Ruiz Jr. for this episode of 5 Minute Friday. Don Miguel is a master of transformation, and he shares so much wisdom about forgiveness and moving forward with life on Episode 630. In This Episode You Will Learn: Why people judge themselves so harshly (00:47) What it means to forgive yourself (1:23) How we reward and punish ourselves (1:40) The illusion of our expectations (2:38) How to forgive yourself (3:28) Get more from Lewis! S1 Ep 627629 The Power of Hope to Heal with Elizabeth Smart
“It’s not what happens to you that defines who you are, it’s ultimately your decisions.” - Elizabeth Smart There are a lot of heartbreaking things that happen in this world. I’m sure you have your own stories. Being a victim doesn’t end with the event. It continues on for a lifetime. In the end, you have no control over what happened to you. There’s no going back. What you do have control over is the decisions you make on the other side -- how you let these tragedies affect you. You need to not only stay strong but also learn to forgive. When I say this, I say it from personal experience. I have gone through abuse when I was younger, and I understand how it can disrupt you to your core. But forgiveness isn’t for them. It’s for you. Forgiveness doesn’t mean what happened is ok. It doesn’t mean you let go of what happened and consider everything to be just fine. It doesn’t eliminate what happened. Forgiveness is about allowing yourself to move forward as a better person. It’s about growing, rather than letting these events disrupt your life anymore. It’s about becoming stronger and learning from the situation to help others. There is no one who knows this better than today’s guest on The School of Greatness: Elizabeth Smart. If you haven’t heard of Elizabeth Smart, she was kidnapped by complete strangers at the age of 14 and held captive for 9 months. She endured nearly every terrible thing you can imagine. Today, Elizabeth is a NYT best-selling author and has dedicated her life to bringing empowerment to survivors and awareness to these crimes. On this episode, we discuss the biggest lessons she’s learned about forgiveness, her definition of hope, the importance of owning your story, and the biggest lesson she learned from her captors. Discover all of that and much more, on Episode 629. What’s been the biggest lesson about forgiveness for you? (6:23) If you could go back to that day would you wish it didn’t happen, or do you feel like you’re better off because of what you learned? (10:42) What was the feeling when you saw your family for the first time? (12:32) Do you feel like you’re still healing today? (16:20) What if you feel there is no hope? (17:32) Does someone who commits these crimes have no hope for a meaningful life? (19:26) Is there anything that you’ve given up hope on? (25:03) Do you believe in people? (27:42) What’s the reason to keep going when things are dark? (29:18) If what we go through doesn’t define us, what does define us? (32:09) How long it took Elizabeth to forgive and move on (9:46) The biggest fear for Elizabeth during her abduction (12:00) What gave her hope while being held captive (14:13) Her definition of hope now (16:46) The difference between a collective community having hope and a single person having hope (24:38) How people can be more educated to not commit these crimes (25:52) What Elizabeth wishes more people would do about owning our own stories (28:12) The biggest lesson that she learned from her captors (29:35) Plus much more... S1 Ep 626628 Understand Your Body Through Somatic Intelligence with Chen Lizra
“MORE AND MORE PEOPLE ARE THINKING TOO MUCH AND FEELING ENOUGH.” There is a certain art that I feel had been lost over the years in this country, and you may have noticed it too. It’s the art of seduction. Let me make one thing clear, when I say seduction I don’t mean unwanted flirting. I don’t mean trying to manipulate someone. True seduction is a lore more than that. Seduction is about selflessly making other people feel good about themselves. Their bodies, their personalities, and everything about them. It’s also about being aware of your own body. Owning it, being proud of it, and listening to it. In America we spend so much time on our phones, we’ve lost that seduction between each other. This is a topic that my guest today, Chen Lizra, is an expert on. Chen Lizra had a wildly successful Ted Talk on the power of seduction. She’s also an award winning entrepreneur, best-selling author, and a professional dancer. She learned all about the power of seduction while living in Cuba, where she was deeply inspired by the culture of body confidence there. She was able to see how people were able to really connect with each other, lift each other up, and make a true connection with their bodies. As a result, she has developed a powerful method of teaching body-awareness called somatic intelligence. I was fascinated during this conversation as she explained (and demonstrated) these principles and how they impact our relationships, our opportunities, and our self-confidence. Learn all about the power of seduction in our everyday lives, on Episode 628. Some Questions I Ask: In your Ted Talk you mention children are taught in America to be more closed off, is that right? (5:20) What career were you in before this? (9:10) How long were you an animator for? (11:12) When did your vision come together? (21:51) How long were you in Cuba? (25:03) What happens when we rediscover our natural sensuality? (26:48) How do you use seduction without crossing people’s boundaries? (35:16) How do we know if we’ve disconnected from our body? (45:04) What’s the difference between sexuality and sensuality? (49:42) How do we cultivate charm? (51:44) How do we balance masculinity and femininity? (59:38) Are you in a relationship now? (1:06:24) In This Episode You Will Learn: The common misconception about seduction (7:35) What Chen decided to do after her awakening (10:24) How she learned about seduction in Cuba (18:12) What Cuba has in their culture that allowed her to free herself from trauma (22:41) When and why we started to lose the connection with our bodies (25:16) How having elegance calms nerves (30:12) How men can connect more without crossing boundaries (41:47) How we can learn to listen to our bodies (45:58) How a man be more sensual to attract a female partner (50:47) What Chen has to say to people that feel vulnerability and sensuality is weakness (56:18) How her arm injury was a result of not opening up emotionally (1:07:42) Plus much, much more Get more from Lewis! S1 Ep 625627 Let Passion Lead with Steve Cook
LOOK FOR SOMETHING TO BE GRATEFUL FOR EVERY DAY. Finding what makes you passionate is something a lot of people struggle with. We all want to find that thing in life that we are excited to do -- the drive that makes us want to wake up early because we can’t wait to get started. When you find the energy that your passion creates, it’s your duty to share it with everyone around you. That’s when you’ll make a real impact and people will remember you. Take care of them, and they’ll end up taking care of you one day. To go more in depth about the importance of living your passion, I wanted to bring back an episode with Steve Cook for this week’s 5 Minute Friday. Steve is one of the most recognizable faces in fitness today. He’s an IFBB Pro Men’s Physique Competitor, and spokesmodel for Optimum Nutrition and Bodybuilding. S1 Ep 624626 Marriage Secrets from a Divorce Lawyer with James Sexton
“THIS IS THE MOST LEGALLY SIGNIFICANT THING YOU WILL DO, OTHER THAN DYING.” Marriage is something that is so important to people. In fact, you probably thought about what your wedding would be like as a child. When people go into a marriage they think so much about their venue, their cake, their guest list -- but they never really think about what they are signing up for. Marriage is, legally, one of the most important things you can do. You are signing away half of your life. And there’s nothing wrong with that - if it’s the right person. On this episode of The School of Greatness, I brought on someone who knows so much about people being with the wrong person and how to set yourself up for a great marriage: NYC divorce attorney James Sexton. James has intentionally focused his practice on divorce and family law since his graduation from Fordham Law School. In addition to his Juris Doctorate (Law Degree) he has a Master of Arts degree from New York University where he focused his graduate research on the areas of persuasive speech and propaganda studies. To top it all off, James is the author of the incredibly informative book on marriage, If You’re in My Office, You’re Already Too Late. On this episode he discusses how a lot of people rush into a serious relationship without ironing out all of the details. He shares the insights he’s learned from thousands upon thousands of failed marriages. And he shared why he still believes marriage is a good idea. Learn all of the inside secrets to creating a successful marriage, on Episode 626. Some Questions I Ask: Have there been any clients that were going to get a divorce then decided not to? S1 Ep 623625 Transform Your Struggle into Strength with The Bella Twins
THESE SUPERSTAR TWINS COULD NEVER HAVE IMAGINED THEIR LIFE TODAY. One of the things I love most about how the world is growing is how the boundary between genders has been crumbling down. It used to be that a woman’s place was only in the home. More and more that stereotype is being disproven. Women are entering more and more areas that wouldn’t have been imaginable when I was younger. When I was a kid, when you’d think wrestlers you’d think Hulk Hogan or Randy Savage. Now you think of people like today’s guests: Nikki and Brie Bella. These two sisters are a true inspiration to the next generation of women. They are the definition of girl power and show that anyone can achieve greatness in anything they want. If you haven’t heard of the Bella Twins, they are WWE Superstars, Reality TV stars, and fashion designers. I felt so fortunate to sit down with them and have them tell me everything they know about greatness, which is a lot. So much, in fact, that this interview went longer than most episodes. I couldn’t stop, and I know you’ll love every moment of this one. Nikki and Brie told me how they went from small town farm girls to superstars. They talk about the adversity they went through, struggling in a toxic home environment, and even Brie losing her high school sweetheart to a drunk driver. Discover all of that and much more, on Episode 625. Some Questions I Ask: How did you get to think bigger than the farm life? (16:06) When did you audition for Diva Search? (24:15) In four days you had a contract with WWE? (29:16) Why were you nervous to be on Total Divas? (36:15) How do you know when to say no to something? (45:48) What was the moment that you cried the most? (54:16) When did you start to go down your spiritual path? (1:00:19) Did you go on your spiritual journey at the same time? (1:04:26) What’s the biggest lesson you both learned from your mom? (1:11:34) Has there ever been a point where you guys disconnected? (1:23:20) What are you most proud of your sister for? (1:28:02) In This Episode You Will Learn: What they dreamed about growing up (10:17) Their first job at Hooters (22:00) Why you should go to a WWE show (30:52) How long training was (32:30) Their morning routines (38:35) What it was like leaning on the job (50:23) The biggest lesson their father taught them (56:17) What it was like for Brie to lose her high school sweetheart (1:03:02) Their childhood regrets (1:08:00) What it’s like being in a relationship with inspiring, powerful men (1:15:03) Advice to coming of age girls who are feeling overwhelmed by the world (1:24:36) The feedback they have for each other (1:34:52) Plus much, much more Get more from Lewis! S1 Ep 622624 Find Your Flow with Travis Pastrana
DON'T GIVE UP BEFORE YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE. Have you ever wondered how people can be so great in the moment? How they can go with the flow so perfectly and know exactly how to maneuver a situation in their favor? Maybe it’s the ability to land that dream client who seemed unattainable. Maybe it’s being able to nail that trick on a skateboard, just when it seems like things are about to go wrong. In any case, the secret to your success and ability to go with the flow stems from the same place: failure. We all fear failure, but in the end it’s what makes us stronger. It means we’ve been testing the space, and working towards our dreams. To go into this more I wanted to post a clip of a previous episode with Travis Pastrana. Travis is an amazing athlete of a different type. He’s won gold medals for motocross in the X-Games, and is a phenomenal BMX rider. He even runs his own action sports show: Nitro Circus. Learn how you can become a master of your own passions, on Episode 624. In This Episode You Will Learn: How bad experiences can help you (00:49) Ways the greats push everything forward (1:27) What Travis does to stay on top (2:13) How your passions will help you succeed (3:12) Why not giving up is so important (3:35) Get more from Lewis! S1 Ep 621623 The Beauty of Breaking with Candice Kumai
“The ones I’m attracted to the most have grit and grace all over them.” - Candice Kumai I’m sure you’ve had times in your life where you’ve felt broken. You may even be feeling that way now. In those moments you may feel like you’ve lost the ability to be perfect. You may even feel like there’s no point, that the boat has sailed. That’s not true. You have the chance to come out more beautiful of a person than you were before. In Japanese culture there is something called kintsugi, or golden repair. When someone would break something, especially of value, it would be repaired and finished with gold dust. These golden cracks were revered, and objects were considered to be even more beautiful than when they were brand new. These golden cracks gave it personality and a new life it wouldn’t have had before. On this episode of The School of Greatness I bring you a truly inspirational person with so much knowledge and love of applying this concept to ourselves: Candice Kumai. Candice is a Japanese Polish American who struggled with racism growing up because she was different. She persevered and saw the beauty in herself that made her different from others in her school and used it to become a professional model. From there Candice made a pivot to become a great chef, where she faced even more scrutiny in her new community for having been a former model. Candice has developed the unique ability of emotional kintsugi, where she can turn emotional turmoil, racism, and negative situations into golden opportunities. I really appreciated her energy and passion for sharing this idea with as many people as possible. Beyond being a well-known wellness influencer and chef, Candice has decided it’s time for her to tell the whole story of how wellness can come back into our lives after we experience being broken. Learn how you too can create beauty from your own personal darkness, on Episode 623. Some questions I ask: What was the hardest thing for you to reflect on? (10:16) Why is it that despite everything America has put them through, the Japanese still love us? (13:03) You had a relationship for a long time, is that right? (17:13) How long did you stay in Japan after the breakup? (23:08) Why did you want to do this type of book? (25:02) How do you think being broken makes us stronger? (28:47) What is the biggest problem a lot of Americans face with food and nutrition? (33:05) How closely related is food to our emotional stability? (41:04) In this episode you will learn: How things that were broken can become more beautiful than when they were perfect (6:25) What Candice experienced as an Asian kid growing up in Southern California (11:44) Candice’s experience of a breakup and losing a family member at the same time (18:18) Why Candice was always afraid to be successful (24:11) The biggest lesson Candice has learned about herself over the last few years (26:37) Principles we should be thinking about to have wellness all around (30:06) Why so many of us are afraid to be who we really are (36:48) Plus much more... S1 Ep 620622 Love Everyone Always with Bob Goff
“HUMBLE VOICES CARRY FURTHER IN THIS WORLD.” All of us want to be loved and accepted. It’s how we were brought into this world, and it’s how we should be spending our lives. I’ve learned that if you want to get love you have to learn to give it, but it’s not always that easy. I’m sure you’ve found yourself around people who you may find creepy or that may hate on you for seemingly no reason. Your knee jerk reaction is probably to respond with an attack back, but that does the opposite of what anyone wants. Hate breeds hate and love breeds love. At the end of the day, how do you want to be remembered? I know I want to be remembered as someone who lit the way with love, compassion, and really tried to understand everyone I encountered. On this episode of The School of Greatness I’ve brought you someone who has been spreading nothing but love around the entire world: Bob Goff. Bob is one of the most interesting people I’ve ever met. He used to be a lawyer and has since turned his life into one designed to spread love. He is a New York Times best selling author, a diplomat, and a phenomenal speaker. He’s helped build schools and shelters around the world. He’s saved lives by educating witch doctors in other countries, and has even become the Uganda consolut to the US. This was easily one of the most interesting interviews I’ve ever done. Bob’s mission is one I truly believe in. And believe it or not despite everything he’s done he still gets haters on social media. We discuss how he deals with those haters, how you can love deeper, and how you can overcome your insecurities. Discover all of that and much more, on Episode 622. Some Questions I Ask: Are you insecure? (7:34) How do you do what you do? (8:50) What did you learn from the last 25 years of being magnetic? (12:24) Why did you want to become an attorney in the first place? (15:57) When did you build your first school? (21:03) What’s your best piece of advice that does rhyme? (26:17) Who are you right now? (28:22) How do you get in touch with the humblest version of you? (30:06) What does faith have to do with loving difficult people or situations? (32:54) How do you know if you are engaging people too long? (37:05) How do you deal with haters when you’re just trying to spread love? (39:48) You engaged with witchcraft people in Uganda? (43:50) Do you go to the witch doctor graduations? (46:17) What do you still need patience in? (52:27) How did you transfer from being a lawyer to having a massive social media audience? (53:53) What’s the biggest lesson you think you still need to master? (59:50) In This Episode You Will Learn: How people get caught up in stereotypes (6:46) Bob’s boat race experience (10:25) What Bob wants more than anything right now (13:06) Who I want to be in 10 years (14:20) Bob’s first publishing deal (17:33) How to really engage with someone (20:13) How to work towards the success you want (23:01) The way Bob handles haters (30:26) How you can make a large impact in the world (36:04) Why love will be what we’re remembered for (41:29) The biggest lesson Bob’s learned from witch doctors (48:30) Where the best headlines of your book would come from (51:10) Why Bob wrote his latest book (1:00:45) Plus much more Get more from Lewis! S1 Ep 619621 Fill Yourself with Energy with Rob Dyrdek
“SUCCESS OR FAILURE, THERE'S A LESSON - AND IT'S ALL HUMBLING.” I get a lot of people asking how I stay motivated and passionate about all my projects. It’s honestly one of the simplest secrets I have. If you want to stay passionate, get things done, and keep on top here’s what you need to do: Stay curious. When you are curious about things, you pursue that knowledge to the point of mastery. The more curious you become, the more excited you will be. That excitement is the key to success. All that energy you build up will charge the people around you. Energy feeds energy, and when you don’t have energy it’ll lower everyone else’s energy around you. To help you understand more on the topic I wanted to bring you this clip from a previous episode with Rob Dyrdek. If you don’t know Rob, he’s another Ohio boy and sensational icon. He was a pro athlete, former stuntman, and current host of the hit show Ridiculousness. On this episode of 5 Minute Friday, Rob breaks down his success and how he keeps the passion flowing in everything he pursues. Learn how you too can keep your energy up and inspire the world around you, on Episode 621. In This Episode You Will Learn: Rob’s work ethics (00:55) What drives Rob to achieve his goals (1:20) Where your beliefs come from (1:42) How you impact the people around you (3:00) Get more from Lewis! S1 Ep 618620 How to Win (and Why You Fail)
"We can't use our talent to produce outstanding results if we're in reaction mode." It's been a while since I've recorded a solo round for the podcast, but I had something to say that got me fired up. So here you go :) Lately I've been thinking a lot about the difference between surviving in business and life and thriving. It makes a massive difference in how you experience each day, as well as each year, but it really doesn't take too much adjustment to flip from one to the other. This one shift in my life has made a huge difference, so I wanted to record an episode where I break down how to do this. Most of the powerful advice I've been given in my life has been really simple. And this key is no different. But it makes the biggest difference day in and day out in my results. I'm giving you my very best insights and answers in this episode to how I consistently have been able to deliver powerful results, keep progressing, and stay healthy and motivated. And it's not as hard as you might think. Welcome to a straight-talking solo round on some of my best business (and life) strategy in Episode 620. In this episode you will learn: The main reason why people fail even when they are working hard (9:10) The key to winning (11:10) What keeps you from living in a high level of energy (11:59) My recommendation for creating consistent strategy in your life (12:40) The best way to keep your team focused on the big strategy (19:20) The 5 top ways to manage your energy efficiently (26:25) Plus much more... S1 Ep 617619 Experience Your Ultimate Potential with Rich Roll
“My desire was to figure out a way to impact the most number of people in the most meaningful way possible.” Success can have a very tricky definition. You can have the ideal job, make a decent salary, have that sports car you always wanted, and still not really be successful. To truly be happy, the ultimate meter for success, you need to be doing things that fill you up. Finding your passion in the world can be the difference between struggling to get out of bed in the morning and being excited to get the day started. Sometimes you need to stop and ask if you’re really chasing the life you want or chasing something someone else wants of you. This is a lesson that was hard learned by my latest guest, Rich Roll. Rich Roll has been on my show twice before, and it was a pleasure having him back. He battled with an alcohol addiction that ruined his life from the age of 17 to the age of 31, when he finally went to a treatment center. Most people only spend 28 days there. He ended up spending 100. When he got out, he changed his life. He pursued a career most people would consider ideal and made a great living. The problem was, it wasn’t the life he wanted and it took a toll on him physically. After having a brush with death in his late 30s, he began living his life for him. Since then, he’s become a successful athlete, motivational speaker, podcast host, and all around incredible human being. You can hear all about his incredible journey and his plans for the future, on Episode 619. Some Questions I Ask: What are some challenges you’ve experienced since this book originally came out? (8:25) What’s the biggest lesson your wife taught you? (13:58) Do you think your 45 year old self would be proud of your 51 year old self? (16:56) Do you think you’ll be doing your podcast for another 5 years? (18:56) Do you think you’ll do a race again at 60? (27:50) If someone is looking to improve their life, what one aspect is the most important to start with? (35:48) Food does something to our physical makeup? (38:57) Why did you stay in the treatment center for so long? (39:56) How has your relationship evolved over the last 20 years? (48:00) What’s the big lesson that you try to teach your kids? What’s the biggest lessons you learned from your parents? (53:57) In This Episode You Will Learn: The biggest personal challenge for Rich the last 5 or 6 years (12:32) How Rich sees his story different now than he did when he first wrote the book (15:13) The thing Rich is most proud of over the last 7 years (18:13) The viking endurance race Rich did last year (21:10) Rich’s long battle with alcoholism (42:13) The journey of Rich’s marriage (46:34) How being a recovering addict taught Rich about being compassionate to others (49:36) The biggest challenge of being a parent (52:52) The biggest challenge Rich is facing right now (54:38) Plus much, much more Get more from Lewis! S1 Ep 616618 Faith Over Fear with Gabby Bernstein
“RESISTANCE IS WHAT BLOCKS US FROM RECEIVING SUPPORT AND GUIDANCE.” There’s so much happening in the world right now. One thing we can’t do is give in to the fear. Instead, give in to love. Give support, passion, and nothing but love to everyone you meet. For this 5 Minute Friday, I decided to refer back to an older episode of The School of Greatness with Gabby Bernstein. Gabby is a NYT bestselling author, she’s regarded by Oprah as one of the emerging spiritual leaders of our time, and she is a powerhouse force of love and healing. S1 Ep 615617 Master Your Energy and Heal Your Body with Donny Epstein
“UNLESS YOU CLAIM EXTRAORDINARY, ORDINARY CLAIMS YOU.” Your mindset is one of the most powerful tools you have. In fact, it’s so powerful you may not even realize how much it affects you every day. When you show up with a lot of energy, excited, and ready give fully you will energize everyone around you. When you show up with no energy and sluggish, you’ll zap the energy out of everyone in the room with you. It’s your duty to manage the energy you give to the world with your mindset. This not only includes your day to day choices, but also the choice you make about how your past experiences show up. On this episode of The School of Greatness, I bring you an expert on energy and perception: Donny Epstein. S1 Ep 614616 Dr. Mark Hyman: Heal Your Body with Food
“FOOD IS MEDICINE. IT WORKS FASTER, BETTER, AND CHEAPER THAN ALMOST ANY DRUG.” I know how hard it is to eat a healthy diet. It requires time and energy that you often feel like you don’t have. But what if I told you the time and energy you think you don’t have is because of the food you’re currently putting into your body? It's easy to be skeptical about this idea. But that’s what the food industry wants us to think. It wants us to continue eating its food, not giving a second thought to the sugars and fat we’re putting into our system. To break free from this mindset, it's really helpful to talk to the experts. And today, I have one of the most knowledgeable people in the field: Dr. Mark Hyman. Dr. Mark Hyman, M.D. is the founder and medical director of the UltraWellness Center, Director of the Cleveland Clinical Center for Functional Medicine, and the Chairman of the Board of the Institute for Functional Medicine. He is a New York Times bestselling author with books like 10-Day Detox Diet and Eat Fat, Get Thin. His latest book Food: What The Heck Should I Eat? provides an explanation of the nutritional science around food and why the political, environmental, economic and social issues corrupt our understanding of food. Dr. Hyman is one of my favorite people to learn about health from because he is so honest about what's going on. Instead of trying to push his own agenda, he's got humanity's best interest at heart. If you’re looking to learn about the connection between food and energy or how the food industry manipulates what we see on TV, tune into Episode 616 to forever change your eating habits. Some Questions I Ask: How does our food impact everything? (6:45) How does funding affect the public discourse about food? (12:47) Do you think all inflammation, chronic pain and disease can be eliminated from the foods we eat? (16:30) Can you gain muscle mass living a fully vegetarian/vegan lifestyle? (20:48) What are the 3 basic food rules you live by? (24:55) What do you think the main thing people are feeding themselves that’s hurting them? (30:42) What’s the biggest challenge you face in your life? (32:13) Is there anything now you believe in that you think will eventually be debunked? (38:15) In This Episode You Will Learn: How Dr. Hyman sees food affecting our environment (8:13) When Dr. Hyman’s opinion was influenced by the food industry (12:59) What Dr. Hyman, being a functional doctor, sees as the root of disease (16:38) The question Dr. Hyman asks himself when food shopping (25:00) What Dr. Hyman sees as the greater footprint beyond your own health (28:24) How Dr. Hyman sees the power of the individual vs. the food system (34:00) What Dr. Hyman sees as the problems with grouping disease by symptoms and not causes (38:15) Get more from Lewis! S1 Ep 613615 Find Your Belief with Jonathan Fields
“Let your personal experience tell you whether your belief is still valid or something has to change.” One of the most important things you can do is keep your beliefs elastic. This gives your mind the freedom and room to grow if it wants to adopt new principles. For those who lock into a set of beliefs, they close themselves off to outside influence. When you do this, your mind stops growing. For this episode of 5 Minute Friday I wanted to bring you this valuable clip from an episode with Jonathan Fields. Jonathan is the founder of a mission-driven media and education venture called Good Life Project, where he and his team lead a global community in the quest to live more meaningful, connected, and vital lives. His new book How to Live a Good Life offers a gateway to a life of meaning, connection, and vitality. Today he shares his insights on why staying open to new beliefs is the ticket to always growing. If you’re looking to expand your mind, listen here on Episode 615. “The moment you lock into certainty about your beliefs is the moment you stop growing.” In This Episode You Will Learn: Why Jonathan Fields believes certainty is the moment you stop growing (0:50) What Jonathan Fields sees as the cause of people’s lives going sideways (1:32) How Jonathan Fields responds to people who are locked into their beliefs (1:56) The definition of a good life according to Jonathan Fields (2:11) What Jonathan Fields asks from people who are locked into their beliefs (3:01) Jonathan Fields’ views on accepting norms (3:21) Plus much, much more... IF I WERE AFRAID OF STEREOTYPES, I WOULD NEVER BE WHERE I AM TODAY. I know that transformation and change is one of the hardest (and scariest) things you can go. Change is the only way that you can truly grow. As a person, in relationships, and even in business. The best way to transform is to constantly focus on doing better than you previously did. As you push yourself further and further, a little more each time, you'll become much more confident in yourself and your abilities. To help with understanding more about transforming yourself, trusting yourself, and believing in yourself, I brought on one of best people I could think of: Shaun T. Shaun T is a world-renowned health and fitness expert, TV host, motivator and creator of the best-selling fitness programs INSANITY, HIP HOP ABS, CIZE, and many more. He has hosted several primetime TV series, danced with Mariah Carey, and choreographed for the NCAA Final Four Halftime Show and the movie Bring It On: All or Nothing. He's also an entrepreneur, author, new dad, and total transformation coach. I hadn't met Shaun before we came together to record a podcast, but now I consider him a brother. His energy, honesty, huge heart, and way of caring about people is amazing. He has also created extraordinary results for so many people (and himself) and is committed to being the best version of himself. If you want to learn the mindset and steps you need to take in order to believe in yourself and create a transformation that create your best life, you can't miss this episode. Learn the lessons Shaun T has learned through his own transformation and what you need to do to better yourself, on Episode 611. Some Questions I Ask: What's your secret in the closet? We don't talk about the end all. We talk about how to get there. Having grown up in Ohio, I have always been a fan of Ohio State University. If you weren't aware, they have the best coach out there: Coach Urban Meyer. Coach Meyer really sets all of his players up to have a solid career and foundation when they leave university because he doesn't just run a football program. He runs a leadership program. Coach Meyer has also led an incredible life himself. He is a 3 time national championship coach and a NY Times bestselling author. I'm so excited to share this interview with you. If you're going to have a discussion, be positive about it. Don't tear people down for trying. - Lauren Singer Have you ever thought about how much trash you create in a day? My juice comes in plastic bottles, my prepared meals come in plastic containers, my favorite to go meal from my favorite restaurant comes in a plastic bowl in a plastic bag. It's not just food either, it's everything. When you order something online it comes in a box full of packing products. It all adds up pretty quick, and once I started to notice how much trash I was creating, I started to wonder about a different solution. Some of you may know Lauren from her popular blog Trash is for Tossers, or even from her giant social media following. S1 Ep 602604 Susan David: The Art of Emotional Agility
People have the greatest levels of success when they live and work at the edge of their abilities. - Susan David All of us want to be happy. Many of us pursue happiness in different ways, and sometimes that includes trying to block out less than happy emotions. You might have noticed that becoming obsessed with this pursuit can actually make you less happy in the long run. That's because all emotions are meant to be experienced. They are meant to pass through you, and when you suppress them or try to pretend they aren't there they will just come back to you with a vengeance. So how do we be truly happy? That's exactly what Susan David has spent her career studying. Susan David is a psychologist, originally from South Africa, that has been learning about emotions and people's pursuit of happiness since she lost her father in high school. She has recently written a best selling book, Emotional Agility, about the importance of every emotion we go through. Susan also recently gave a Ted Talk that was one of the most successful campaigns to date. It received over a million views within the first week. I like to think that things come into our lives at the perfect time and for the right reasons. Lately I've been going through some emotional challenges, which I open up about on this episode, and I took so much away from Susan's advice. I feel privileged to have Susan on this episode and I know you will learn a lot, on Episode 604. Some questions I ask: How did you handle the passing of your dad at a young age? S1 Ep 601603 Feel Your Heart with Twitch Boss
AT THE END OF THE DAY LOVE IS WHAT MAKES THIS WHOLE THING HAPPEN. One thing I've learned over the years is that you really do need to follow your heart. Do what feels good for you and ignore the people who are putting you down for it. Don't listen to the naysayers because they don't understand your passions. If you feel yourself being pulled to something, and excitement fills you when you do it, then follow that path. You'll be surprised at how fast, when you make it, the people who put you down become your ultimate supporters. For this episode of 5 Minute Friday I wanted to bring you back this inspirational clip from a previous episode with Stephen tWitch Boss. You probably remember tWitch as being a fan favorite on So You Think You Can Dance and the DJ on The Ellen Show. THE SPEED OF THE LEADER DETERMINES THE RATE OF THE PACK. Philip is now running for Governor with a progressive vision to move Florida forward as a leader in the 21st century economy. He wants to revitalize the economy, envisioning a Florida with better-paying jobs, more competitive public schools, and an entrepreneurial approach to protecting our environment. In the past, he funded his own campaign, refusing money from special interests, and easily won re-election to two terms with a majority of the vote. On this episode we had a really amazing conversation. Before he was ever in public office, Philip was an entrepreneur, creating multiple companies and scaling them to great success. He let me in on some incredible information a lot of people don't know about him, including how he gave back to one of the most influential people from his childhood. Philip goes into detail on how he led a successful election campaign, the lesson he learned from Bill Clinton, and how you can become a better communicator. S1 Ep 599601 Guy Winch: How to Heal a Broken Heart
We need to think about feelings and how we respond to them as something we have control over. I have had a lot of injuries in my life. I've even had a physical injury that destroyed my sports career. Honestly, that was nothing compared to some of the emotional injuries I've been through. We all tend to neglect our emotional injuries. We push them off and consider ourselves as wimps or over-emotional. In reality, these injuries are extreme. They need to be cared for like any broken bone. If we continue to ignore our heartbreaks, that pain will never heal. It will carry with us for years, or even decades. On this episode of The School of Greatness I'm joined again by the amazing psychologist, Guy Winch, to discuss emotional pain -- whether it's from a break up, the loss of a loved one, or any other negative feelings that may be holding you back in life. Dr. Guy Winch, is a licensed psychologist, author, and in-demand keynote speaker whose books have been translated into twenty-four languages. Dr. Winch's viral TED Talk, Why We All Need to Practice Emotional First Aid, has been viewed over 5 million times and is rated among the top 5 most inspiring talks of all time on TED.com. His upcoming book, How to Fix a Broken Heart, just came out and that's what we dove into in this episode. Previously on the show (way back in year 1), we talked about the idea of "emotional first aid" and how important it is for us to learn how to heal our emotional injuries just like we do our physical ones. However, as Guy pointed out, heartbreak is a special kind of emotional pain and there are certain behaviors that support us in healing from this (and many that don't.) Learn how to understand yourself and your friends in heartbreak, and heal the healthy way, on Episode 601. Some Questions I Ask: How do we communicate with someone who has a broken heart? (7:02) Should we feel embarrassed for grieving? (12:32) What are examples of some things people do with feelings thare ok, or that they shouldn't be doing? (14:21) What are thoughts we should be having after a heartbreak? (18:30) What's the best approach to process the feelings? (25:36) What's the best way for friends to reach out to someone going through a heartbreak? (31:08) What's the longest it took you to get over a romantic relationship? (40:15) What's the biggest lesson you've learned about yourself from 20 years of psychology? (43:10) What do you think is holding you back from doing what you want to do faster? (47:03) Has there ever been a challenge someone brought to you that you didn't feel like you could find a solution for? (52:00) In This Episode You Will Learn: What happens if you don't process your heartbreak (10:36) The stupid feelings Dr. Winch has (13:02) The time frame for when someone should be able to get back to a normal life after a heartbreak (16:32) The best process for when you breakup with someone (21:42) Which is harder to recover from, an emotion or a physical injury (27:34) A serious heartbreak that took Dr. Winch a long time to recover from (35:45) What's the greatest part about being a psychologist for Dr Winch (41:32) The greatest challenge Dr. Winch faces in his life right now (44:34) A common theme he's learned about people (49:00) And much, much more Get more from Lewis! S1 Ep 597599 Nina Dobrev: The Balance of Acting, Advocacy, and Using Your Voice
Other people won't make me happy, it has to be from within me. - Nina Dobrev One of the things that even I struggle with is being complacent. It's easy for all of us to feel comfortable where we are in life and settle for what we have. In fact, it can be scary to try to push things even further. Breaking out of that comfort zone and continuing to grow is the difference between being average and being great. Anytime you feel comfortable, that means you're not challenging yourself and it's time to make a shift. Maybe you need a new job or just to find ways to push yourself further. On this episode of The School of Greatness, we are joined by an inspirational and amazing actress, Nina Dobrev. She's spent her whole life pushing the boundaries and keeps challenging herself any chance she can. You probably know Nina from the hit show The Vampire Diaries. Nina was born in Sofia, Bulgaria. She moved to Canada at the age of two and has lived in Toronto, Ontario ever since. From a very young age, she showed great enthusiasm and talent for the arts: Dance, Gymnastics, Theatre, Music, Visual arts, and Acting! Modeling jobs led to commercials, which then turned into film auditions. Shortly after, she booked roles in the feature films Fugitive Pieces, Away from Her and the popular television series, Degrassi: The Next Generation. We've become good friends over the past couple of years, and I'm constantly impressed by how Nina decides to push herself. S1 Ep 595597 Raise Your Voice with Sekou Andrews
YOU ARE STILL YOUR MOST IMPORTANT AUDIENCE MEMBER - SEKOU ANDREWS I truly believe that one of the most important things we have in this world is our voice. All of us need to speak up without fear, without apologizing, and show the world we care. When I say voice, that doesn't mean your literal voice. For some people, it may be their art, their designs, the technology they develop. Everything you give to this world is a part of your voice. That's one of the reasons I decided to go back and bring you this past episode with Sekou Andrews. Sekou is an incredible spoken word poet who has performed in front of huge audiences. In this clip, he shares a very powerful and inspirational spoken word poem about using our voices for good. I invite you to getting your voice out into the world with pride, on Episode 597. S1 Ep 594596 Tererai Trent: Awaken to Your Full Potential and Achieve the Impossible
"I REALIZED THE PATHWAY I WAS GOING THROUGH WAS SILENCING ME. I've learned that greatness can come from anywhere, everywhere, or anyone. It all starts with a dream, a vision. Of course one of the secrets is never giving up, but the biggest one is that it needs to be yours. You need to know that your goals are your goals, not something pushed on you by someone else. No matter where you are in your life, or what obstacles appear in your way, you can achieve it. I believe this now more than ever after sitting down with our most recent guest, Tererai Trent. Tererai was born in Zimbabwe, was forced into marriage as a child, and even gave birth to 4 children by the time she was 18. She came from a place where education wasn't an opportunity given to women. Tererai ended up pushing through so many obstacles and now had a PhD - and that's just the beginning of her incredible accomplishments. Tererai was named by Oprah as her All-Time Favorite Guest and received a $1.5 million donation to rebuild her childhood elementary school in recognition of her tenacity and never-give-up attitude. With the firm belief that education is the pathway out of poverty and a desire to give back to her community, she founded Tererai Trent International. Eleven schools are being built in Zimbabwe and education has been improved for over 5,000 children so far. And this is only the beginning. Today, Dr. Trent is invited to speak all over the world, to share her remarkable story and the valuable lessons she has learned along the way. She just came out with a new book all about empowering women to awaken to their full potential (she is the poster child of this). Her favorite motto is Tinogona, meaning, It is achievable! Discover all of that and much more, on Episode 596. Some Questions I ask: What interested you in agriculture? (16:15) What made you bring your 5 children and your abusive husband to America? (17:20) What was it like when you met the same woman who inspired you 14 years later? (26:26) Do boys have more access to education around the world? (36:10) What's your message to girls from privileged and non-privileged parts of the world? (40:36) How can anyone make an impact in the world? (42:43) What is available for a woman who is not sexually happy with herself? (46:05) What advice do you have for men to support the women in their lives? (48:15) What's your vision now? Have you planted new dreams? (50:00) In this episode you will learn: What it's like to be a young mother in Kenya (and mother of 4 by 18) (7:43) The struggles of raising kids in while going to school (21:18) The thoughts that helped Tererai find her greatness (23:12) How Tererai funded her dreams (30:09) How writing down her dreams helped her achieve them (37:28) The ways women have been silenced (44:40) A ritual someone can do to rekindle the fire within themselves (47:18) What makes Tererai whole (54:32) Plus much more... S1 Ep 593595 Gary Vaynerchuk: Insecurity, Fame, and Crushing It in Business
NO ENTREPRENEUR CAN BE SUCCESSFUL WITH SOMEONE WHO ISN'T INDEPENDENT As you know, it's important to continually grow (especially if you're an entrepreneur). I'm not excluded from that. Ten years ago I read a book by Gary Vaynerchuk that changed the course of my life. On this episode of the School of Greatness, Gary returns to the show for his third time. He gives me advice for my next ten years but also gives you invaluable advice on so many topics that you won't hear anywhere else. Gary is known for his unapologetic truth-telling attitude. He says a lot of things on social media that people may feel are harsh or extreme. But when we were talking, Gary revealed he actually cares deeply about what people think about him. And that's why he's so committed to serving people with hard-earned business wisdom in the long run. He explains why teenage nerds are winning right now, how hitting the big lists isn't what matters in business, and why you need an independent person in a romantic relationship. If you aren't familiar with Gary, you're missing out. Gary is a serial entrepreneur and the CEO and co-founder of VaynerMedia, a full-service digital agency servicing Fortune 500 clients. Gary rose to prominence in the late 90's after establishing one of the first e-commerce wine sites, WineLibrary, helping his father grow the family business from 4 to 60MM in sales. Gary is also one of the most sought-after public speakers alive today. He is a venture capitalist, 4-time New York Times bestselling author, and an early investor in companies such as Twitter, Tumblr, Venmo, and Uber. You'll learn everything you need to know about how to become the best of the best, on Episode 595. Some questions I ask: How are you affected emotionally when you see yourself aging? (9:32) Did business get better for you when you got married and started having kids? (16:52) When you started having kids did your obsession for business stay the same? (22:31) Why are you doing things you don't like when you have options not to? (24:51) When are the moments that you doubt yourself the most? (26:09) What's your insecurity? (33:45) What do you think you need to take you to the next level? (38:00) What advice would you have for me over the next 10 years? (51:52) In the episode you will learn: The results you should be concentrating on in business (14:02) The biggest challenge Gary's faced since starting Vayner (23:13) Best way to actually build your Instagram following (30:21) Why Gary hates being disliked (34:20) When relationships are really made (42:41) Plus much more... S1 Ep 591593 5 Years of Greatness
"IT'S ALL ABOUT LIVING THE ADVENTURE OF LIFE AND DOING IT TOGETHER." Wow. This week marks the 5 year anniversary of the School of Greatness podcast. I took a minute tonight to reflect on the incredible gift this show has been to me and I was overcome with gratitude. When I think about the inspiration we've heard, the lessons we've learned, the value we've gotten, and the people we've met through this show, I am so humbled. And this is just the beginning. While I am always looking forward to what we can create even better, I knew it was important to take this moment and acknowledge what we have created together so far. I am truly honored to be in this journey of greatness with you. To celebrate this milestone, I wanted to highlight one top episode from each year of the podcast. I added a little commentary before each one and shared my thoughts about the show as a whole. So thank you again and here's to another 5 years of greatness in Episode 593. S1 Ep 590592 Danica Patrick: Mindset, Spirituality and Living Fully
"If you don’t try hard enough at something, people could knock you down for it.” I recently had a friend tell me I needed to do an interview with someone special. I’m always hesitant on suggestions, but my friend has done thousands of interviews and he said in his top five was Danica Patrick. I felt I had to give her a shot and I’m so glad I did. She and I are on the same wavelength. We’re both into sports, consider ourselves to be spiritual people, and believe so much in the power of the mind. Danica has a strong presence you can feel the moment she walks into the room and yet she is still one of the sweetest and most thought-provoking people I’ve met. She’s had so many insightful things to say. For those of you who don’t know her, Danica Patrick dropped out of high school to pursue a career as a race car driver. In 2005, Patrick became the first woman to hold the lead during the Indianapolis 500. Only three years later, she was the first woman to record a win on the IndyCar circuit. After switching to stock cars, Patrick won the time trials at the 2013 Daytona 500 - becoming the first woman to win the pole position at NASCAR. Patrick has become one of the most recognizable athletes in the to world, having graced the cover of ESPN: The Magazine and TV Guide. She was also featured in the 2008 and 2009 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. She has appeared in 14 Super Bowl commercials (more than any other celebrity). She’s not only an amazing figure in the world of sports, but she’s also a great author and mentor. She’s just released her newest book, Pretty Intense, that brings light to living health from mind, to body, to diet. Discover all of that and much more, on Episode 592. Some Questions I ask: How she feels on the paleo diet (11:49) You’ve become more about spirituality lately, right? (15:26) What’s the biggest take away since you started going down that rabbit hole? (22:22) How did you arm yourself against criticism throughout your career? (25:22) What is the biggest challenge you’ve had to overcome? (26:44) Do you feel like people attack you in the races? (29:11) How do you handle your ego? (31:15) What’s the question you’ve never been able to answer for yourself? (38:37) How do you condition yourself before practice or a big competition? What’s the greatest moment for you in the last 20 years [in terms of racing] (47:25) How do you condition yourself to believe in yourself? (48:27) What’s the greatest lesson your father taught you? (50:48) If you could give yourself advice when you started, what would it be? (52:38) What are 3 things you want to manifest this year? (55:00) On this episode you will learn: The things Danica and I have in common (9:10) When she started lifting heavier (13:48) Why she started getting into spirituality and healing with the mind (20:39) How she conditions her mind against the intense pressure of competing (23:34) How she gets people to believe in her (27:25) Battles she’s had with her ego throughout the last 20 years (30:05)? S1 Ep 589591 Leave Your Legacy with Ray Lewis
"If the last day of my life came, and people were sitting around me, I would say ‘Smile, because I made it to the other side.’” - Ray Lewis I constantly think about the fact that the only definite thing in this world is what we leave behind. Money comes and goes, belongings eventually break or get thrown out, but what people say about you will never change. This got me thinking about an amazing episode I did with Ray Lewis. Ray has been leaving a legacy not just in football, but to the world. S1 Ep 587589 My Success Habits, Rituals and Morning Routine
HOW YOU START AND END YOUR DAY MATTERS. I get a lot of questions from listeners about what my morning routine, daily habits and nighttime routines look like. So I decided it was time to record a solo episode answering this exact question so that anyone who asks can get a quick answer :) The truth is, I believe that healthy, consistent routines make a massive difference in our daily performance and our long term health and happiness. So even though I'm not perfect at following mine every day, I know what a big impact it makes when I do. Keep in mind that these are just my routines. I've developed them over years of trial and error. Some I got from playing sports, some from studying optimal health, some from going to meditation training, and some from friends. They all serve me, but what I hope you do after listening to this episode is choose habits that serve YOU. Habits are only as useful as the results we get from them, so I invite you to experiment with your own habits until you find ones that work. Here are my favorite ones in Episode 589. In this episode you will learn: What time I wake up (5:45) How I start my day (6:15) Why I make my bed every morning (9:15) How exercise cleanses us (10:08) My morning meditation ritual (12:22) My bedtime routine (17:21) How I prep for a big event or interview (22:34) Plus much more... S1 Ep 586588 Choose What Lights You Up with Scooter Braun
"WHAT’S THE POINT OF GOING AFTER ANYTHING THAT'S REASONABLE? THAT’S NOT GRATIFYING.” I used to believe that money was the answer to happiness. When you spend all of your time chasing the dollar, it bring you emptiness. The real reason to chase after money is so you can have the freedom you need to experience life’s beautiful moment. Chasing the endless dollar is just as bad as being stuck in a cubicle all day. Money is great, but you have to use it to achieve your higher purpose and do the things that actually bring you happiness. This got me thinking about a past episode I did with Scooter Braun, who gave amazing insights to what wealth really means and how to achieve true happiness. Discover what exactly it takes to have wealth in all aspects of life, on Episode 588. In this episode you will learn: The mentality you need to have about money (00:51) How you really achieve happiness (2:12) What you are really working hard for (3:03) Your chances of being super successful (4:36) What you need to do to be in the top 1% (6:25) Get more from Lewis! S1 Ep 585587 Coffee Conversations: Ultimate Sports Strategies for Time Management
"PLAN YOUR PLAY." We live streamed this episode of Coffee Conversations straight to YouTube -- and some of you sent us questions while we filmed! It was awesome and we'll do more of these live episodes if you like them. While Cesar and I were taking questions from you guys on social media, we kept discussing the same main theme. It's something that has made the biggest difference in our business year after year. It's the strategy we set up to manage our time throughout the year so that we can accomplish huge goals consistently. The truth is, it's based on what we learned in sports. The lessons we learned from football still keep us grounded and productive years later. As we answered your questions, we kept coming back to how much this strategic mindset supports us when we set huge goals, get through slumps, stay positive, and more. We realize that the more we choose to live and work in a disciplined, focused way, with plenty of play built in, the better we do all around. Let us know your thoughts on this episode and the live stream after you listen to Episode 587. In this episode you will learn: How we come up with a strategy to accomplish all our big goals for the year (5:10) Why taking breaks to play is so important (14:30) How to make your personal project grow when your time is consumed by your day job (17:48) Strategies for staying positive and keeping others positive (19:28) Tips we've both learned for improving conversational skills (26:58) What to do if you're scared of stepping into your greatness (33:30) How much flexibility I plan into my schedule (39:30) Plus much more...
