Near-term Downside Risk to Gold Prices Surfaces (1/18/24)
(1/18/24) Market breadth has been good, so far this year; the number of stocks above their 50- and 200-DMA is still healthy, but declining. While markets did take out the 20-DMA yesterday, it's not hugely negative. We'll see if markets can rally back above the 20-DMA and negate the break. If we don't, the next test will be at the 50-DMA. Optimism is still good, positioning is still strong, and breadth is still decent. The Volatility Index has seen a pick up over the last few days. Put Option activity has increase, too, as investors begin to add on some additional protection. Bitcoin and its ETF's continues to be interesting; just not enough data yet to chart, however. Gold continues to grind sideways, not doing a lot. There is some near-term downside risk to Gold prices. Interest rates are moving back up after being very over sold; actually a healthy correction in interest rates. A decent point to add exposure is coming, likely around the 4.15 - 4.19% range on Ten-year Treasuries. Will the Magnificent-7 be Magnificent Again? (1/17/24)
(1/17/24) Markets continue to do not a lot, trapped in a consolidation range since December. Most all of the trades in small-cap & mid-caps that were wrapping up the end of the year have pretty much 'given up the ghost.' (1/11/24) Q4 Earnings season commences next week on top of drastically lowered earnings estimates: Analysts have dropped their estimates by $8/share on average, dramatically lowering the bar for companies to clear in their quarterly reports. Additionally, analysts are expecting most of earnings growth this year to come from the Technology sector, with a little help from Healthcare. Meanwhile,. markets continue to trade sideways, yesterday touching December's highs, but rolled off by the end of the day; still, closing close to that level. Markets Are in Limbo Working Through Correction (1/10/24)
(1/10/24) The market is holding above the 20-DMA, although futures are down-to-flattish ahead of today's open. Upside has been somewhat limited, but markets can work through a correctional process in two ways: 1.) Actually have a correction; 2.) work through a consolidation period in which the market just doesn't go anywhere, which is what is, and has been, going on over the past several weeks. This will allow for shorter-termed moving average to "catch up" with the market, and that limits downside risk. The more time spent trading side ways, the less downside draw is applied: Markets are now forming a base from which to launch higher. Bullish Sentiment Continues to Reverse (1/8/24)
(1/8/24) The axiom, "as goes the first five days of January, so goes the month," could prove ominous for investors unless markets can rally past where we were at the close of December. And there is a decent, 40% correlation between negative January's and negative years. Not EVERY year works out this way, however. (At the time of this recording, Dow futures were down 150-pts head of the open.) Markets broke below the 20-DMA on Friday, and technical indicator show markets are still overbought. Will Sector Rotation Be the Theme for 2024? (1/4/24)
(1/4/24) Santa failed to deliver his rally to Broad & Wall by definition, with the declines in the last three trading days taking out all the gains built up before the end of 2023. So what happens next? Markets are still set up for a bit more correction, still sitting on a solid sell signal. Markets are finally starting to work off their over bought conditions, which could create a bounce. The question then becomes whether markets can get their feet back under themselves. This could keep pressure on markets over the next few days. The correction, however, is providing a better opportunity to put capital to work. The number of stocks trading above their 50-DMA is still high, so there is still room for reversions, particularly in stocks that did well last year. Market Returns Reset to Zero (1/2/24)
(1/1/24) Market returns start at zero today, as trading commences for a new year. (BTW, benchmarking is a terrible way to manage money.) The rally into the end of the year as nine-weeks long; that's extraordinary, and should be a reminder that a correction is more and more likely after such a long run of back-to-back gains. The current Santa Clas Rally will officially continue thru the first two trading days of January (today & tomorrow). Markets are very overbought at this point. We'd wait a bit before allocating money; a better trading opportunity may lie ahead. The MACD Buy-sell signal is very over-bought, and about to trigger a sell signal. There is now a negative divergence between the market and the relative strength index, which has been declining even as the market has continued to rise. This typically doesn't last for very long, heralding a correction, which would create a better opportunity to reallocate funds. Market Correction Finally Comes (12/21/23)
(12/21/23) Markets had come so much so far from September, that a correction, in the form of Wednesday's sell-off, was completed anticipated and long-overdue. What caused the sell-off? Who knows? Sometimes, you don't need a reason any more than someone saying, 'That's it; I'm out,' and the stapeded for the day ensues. An entire week's worth of gains was wiped out in under two hours: Gone in 120-minutes (which is shorter than the movie!) There's no real risk here; just a healthy correction that was needed. The Fed Pivots (12/14/23)
(12/14/23) Throwing caution to the wind, a dovish FOMC takes the bearish stance away from markets; markets are forming a cup-and-handle pattern, suggesting a rally to record-highs; but that does not preclude a 3- to-5% correction. Bond yields are to fall. Out of control tipping; how the Fed trained investors to expect backup; the Fed's pivot to dovishness: What do they know that we do not? The benefits of lower rates vs risk of more inflation; financial conditions are easing. Look for a huge short-cover rally, and then get ready for correction. But first, more record-highs. Bullish vs bearish commentary; a look at the FRED database; the key phrase is "effective rate." Excess liquidity is leaving the system; where will the Fed turn when it needs more money? THe Fed is still doing QT, reducing liquidity. Economic data remains weak; is the Fed attempting to micro-manage the economy to a soft-landing? The Fed really doesn't know what it's doing. The Santa Claus Rally Arrives Ahead of Schedule (12/14/23)
(12/14/23) Wednesday's (12/13) FOMC meeting took the bearish bias off the markets. Markets are currently extremely over bought; everything is pegged in terms of bullishness: Retail Investor Sentiment is extremely bullish with 90% of stocks being above their 50-DMA. Historically, such conditions have invariably resulted in correction, but that doesn't mean it has to happen right away. And, after a few weeks of consolidation without a correction, Santa has arrived early, and markets are off to the races, thanks to the Fed's dovish stance. Markets are now within a couple percentage points of marking all-time highs, something which we think may be achieved before Christmas. Meanwhile, Yields, which we have contended have been improperly priced, will likely take out the 200-DMA today on ten-year treasury yields. If you didn't lock in earlier opportunities in bonds, that window is gone. Markets Haven't Generated Record Highs. Yet. (12/13/23)
(12/13/23) Markets are making new highs for this year but have not generated "record highs." Yet. All it would take is about another 150-points...don't see that happening today. Markets are still trying to recover all that was lost during 2022. Markets are very over bought at this point; but is the market unstoppable? Markets have to breathe; and historically, every time markets have been over bought, there has been some kind of correction. In a bull market those corrections are shorter, but in a bear market they're protracted. In a bull market they're not as deep: 3-5% vs 5-10% in a bear market. Investors may be tempted to jump now because it seems the market is unstoppable. It is, indeed, stoppable. Patience is the watch word at this point; let the markets come back to you. Is Measuring Markets By Equal-weighting Better? (12/12/23)
12/12/23) How can you accurately measure your portfolio performance when the "Magnificent 7" gaggle of stocks this year has literally domninated market performance metrics. Perhaps a better metric would be to compare against the RSP equal-weighted index. Markets do continue to run up: The S&P, Dow, & NASDAQ all over-bought; the Russell 2000 is also in rally mode, but somewhat weaker in performance. Volatility is very low at this point, but that could change with reduced trading aas the holidays draw near. Meanwhile, November CPI clocked-in at an expected .1% rate. (12/11/23) Markets have actually set a new high for the year, now up about 20% for 2023. Pretty amazing, considering markets haven't really gone anywhere over the past 22-months. Markets have had a zero rate of return; why is this important? If your financial plan calls for 6% growth annually, with zero gains over two years, you're 12% behind your goals. Only a handful of stocks have driven markets this year. Now, with a very overbought market, now at levels associated with short-term peaks, any trigger for selling could generate a substantial reaction. A pullback to 4,300 would not be surprising. What the VIX is Saying
(12/7/23) As recently as October the Volatility Index (VIX) was rising, spurring concerns about super-bearish outcomes; and as the VIX was very extended, we were looking for a reversal in November that would correspond with a rally...and what a rally it was! But volatility has since evaporated, and has more recently turned up on a buy signal, suggesting a potential push higher over the next week or so: Lower prices = higher volatility. The question is, what piece of news (we're looking at YOU, Federal Reserve) might be the trigger for that increased volatility? Meanwhile, oil prices continue to climb, and are over sold by two standard deviations below the moving average. We think any reversal in oil prices probably won't happen until after December. And despite the recent rally in Bitcoin, it's technically very over bought, at three standard deviations above the long term moving averages. We're looking for a pull back to the mid-30's for a better entry point. The entire asset class is very speculative.
