Has Andrew Tate’s Arrest Impacted His Influence On Young Men?
If you haven't heard of Andrew Tate - you may have been living under a rock. The former kickboxer, turned social media sensation has made headlines in the past year for all the wrong reasons. He's become a hero to young men for his misogynistic views and divisive commentary on relationships between men and women. A few weeks ago, he was arrested in Romania - a place he openly admitted to moving to from the UK because the rape laws are more lenient. With his name being thrust into the spotlight again, it's raised the question...why do young boys and men buy into this rhetoric? On this episode of The Quicky, we speak to a high school principal about the damaging effects Tate's hateful comments are causing for our young men. We also speak to Hunter Johnson, CEO of The Man Cave about how we can tackle the hateful, sexist and violent views Tate promotes. Subscribe to Mamamia GET IN TOUCH Feedback? We’re listening! Riots & A Trump Like President: What The Heck Is Happening In Brazil?
Last October, Brazil announced they had a new President. Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva took out 50.9% against 49.1% for former President Jair Bolsonaro, the right-wing incumbent. Since the result, Bolsonaro's supporters have protested their leaders defeat. Earlier this month, in scenes reminiscent of the January 6 Capitol Building attack in the US in 2021, thousands of far right supporters of Bolsonaro, stormed the country's congress, supreme court and Presidential Palace. In this episode of The Quicky, we look at what exactly has happened in Brazil and whether the far right uprising was destined to unfold or if its simply a copycat event. Ash Barty, Naomi Osaka & Serena Williams: Who Really Has It All?
Last year, in a move that shocked the tennis world, Ash Barty retired from tennis while she was the number one seed. Fans everywhere were confused when the 25 year old announced she'd be stepping away from the sport - just months after winning her third grand slam. Fast forward to January 2023, Ash & her husband have announced they are expecting a baby. Leading to speculation that this must be the reason for her retirement. Because of course, no woman can have that level of commitment to her job and a family. No woman can 'have it all'. But what does that even mean? In this episode of The Quicky, we take a look at what it means to have it all in 2023. Subscribe to Mamamia GET IN TOUCH Feedback? We’re listening! Has Prince Harry Shattered Our Royal Family Fantasy?
We have been exposed to a whole lot of Sussex of late. Prince Harry's tell-all memoir, Spare hit the shelves a week ago, and it seems we can't get enough. We've heard about a physical altercation with Prince William, his time in the military and we even got a peak inside the time Harry lost his virginity. But, not all his stories have been well received. In this episode we look at why Harry's exposés have been a little too much for some to swallow and what happens now he's put all that dirty laundry on display. Today, instead of what’s happening in the news cycle, we’re getting you up to speed on what happens in the day-to-day lives of those who host The Quicky. There are three voices that you will hear on The Quicky throughout the year, Claire Murphy's mostly and then two other incredible journalists, Gemma Bath and Emma Gillespie. All three of us managed to get in the same room at the same time and have a conversation about what we do every day, who we loved to speak to, who we may have offended and what it was like to wake up one morning at 4am and find out the Queen had died. So sit back and enjoy, The Quicky behind the scenes. Subscribe to Mamamia GET IN TOUCH Feedback? We’re listening! How To Avoid The Travel Chaos This Christmas
Christmas may be the most wonderful time of the year for many of us, but it also might be one of the worst if you’re at an airport. This year is set to be no exception. Today we speak to two people who have just boarded or are about to board their flights home for Christmas & what strategies they used to avoid the mayhem that is taking a flight over the Christmas period. We also speak to CEO of the Australian Airports Association, James Goodwin on why some of these issues are occurring and how best to prepare for them. In Australia at this time of year, it’s pretty difficult to avoid anything Christmas. Mackenzie Won't Be Home For Christmas, Australia's Shame Is Why
Congratulations Australia, you’ve surpassed a 2021 milestone. We say this with no joy because it’s not a milestone you want to surpass, it’s one we’ve been actively trying to turn around for years but despite the tireless efforts of thousands of people across the country, 47 women have died at the hands of a violent man in Australia this year, one more than the year before. That’s 47 women who will not be joining their families these holidays, 45 families who will be grieving instead of celebrating. Today, we meet the mother of one of those women as we learn the names of many more who won’t be with their families this Christmas. Subscribe to Mamamia GET IN TOUCH Feedback? We’re listening! Want To Know What Your Colleagues Earn? Now You Legally Can
Have you ever wanted to know how much your colleagues are being paid? Have you ever checked to see if you have a clause in your employment contract that specifically forbids you from asking or sharing that information? New laws have just been passed by the Australian government that will make that a thing of the past. Today we look at the Secure Jobs, Better Pay bill and whether that information on what everyone else is earning, can help you make sure you’re being paid what you’re worth and whether it can actually close Australia’s gender pay gap. The Fall Out From Harry & Meghan's New Doco
The first three episodes of Harry and Meghan’s much anticipated Netflix documentary have finally dropped and we've learned quite a bit from the royal couple. But for those around in 1995, who witnessed Harry’s mother also spill the beans on the firm as the machine behind the royal family is commonly known, we only realised much later just how much she had been manipulated into that interview and the damage it would cause to both her and her family. Today, we look at whether Harry and Meghan have been ensnared by the exact same trap that Diana fell into and what this will mean for the Sussex’s future and family affairs. Ian Thorpe: "I Wasn't Ready At Any Other Time To Come Out"
Ian Thorpe has 5 Olympic gold medals, 9 Commonwealth gold, 13 World Championships and 23 world records. In his 9 years competing in the pool he was known as the Thorpedo, his big feet and long wingspan propelling him through the water for almost every distance from 100m to 800m. But there was one title we weren’t aware of when he was in the sporting spotlight. Today we speak to the man himself about the moment he sat down with Michael Parkinson and revealed to the world he was gay, whether he would have come out sooner had he known the response from the public and how he plans to spend his time celebrating in Sydney for World Pride in 2023. China Protests Are Rare But Can They Make Change?
Recently we saw Chinese citizens on the streets of cities and towns across China itself, protesting against the communist government. Now protests are not uncommon, even in countries where this type of anti-government push back can end with someone behind bars, or worse… but what makes these protests so unique, is the fact that they were even able to coordinate a mass gathering at all. Today we look into why these protests in China are breaking out now and whether their defiance is the sign of the beginning of the end for their leader. Subscribe to Mamamia GET IN TOUCH Feedback? The Fight To Get Women In The Liberal Ranks
More women than ever were elected into the Australian Parliament this year, 58 MPs now making up 38% of the chamber, the highest ever on record. Only for one party, representation went backwards. Today we speak to Charlotte Mortlock, a former journalist who's trying to change the Liberals from the inside out. Subscribe to Mamamia GET IN TOUCH Feedback? We’re listening! Why Won’t The Royals Return The Stuff They Stole?
There’s a scene from the current series of The Crown that many people found jarring. When Mohamed Al-Fayed buys the former French residence of the Duke of Windsor, formerly King Edward VIII, he invites the royals to visit. Instead, they send an entourage who clear it out of some of the more important royal objects, including the desk at which the then King Edward signed his abdication papers. But while that story isn’t quite true, many wondered at the audacity of the royal family claiming artefacts from their own history when they hold on to so many of those they’ve collected from the colonies over hundreds of years, objects that some want returned. Today we check in with Marc Fennell, the host of Stuff the British Stole, to find out out why some things still remain in the grips of the colonial power. Subscribe to Mamamia GET IN TOUCH Feedback?
