Collaboration over competition. Be open and humble enough to being inspired from others that may be half your age. Hala landed on my radar b/c of branding, marketing and tenacity were ever present on LinkedIN. Ep 41Jason Wang: Entrepreneurship & Second Chances

E

Super pumped to introduce my guest today Jason Wang. I first met Jason about a year ago through my work with Defy Ventures. And for those who do not know, Defy is an in-prison program where incarcerated men and women take part in a University-accredited program on well-being, entrepreneurship training, personal development, mentoring, business incubation, financing opportunities, and network development. We will get more to that story in a bit. Jason is a born entrepreneur. At the age of 8, he would buy a box of 300 fortune cookies from his dad’s restaurant for $7 and sell them at school for .25 cents each. He quickly became the “Fortune Cookie King” to his fellow classmates. At the age of 13, he started another business that generated over $100k in revenue with 95% profit margins. Unfortunately, this business was illegal. Oh, and his teammates were his fellow gang members. Jason was finally caught at the age of 15 for a first degree felony and was sent to prison on a 12 year sentence. Since his release, he has earned a double masters (MBA, MS International Business), worked as a management consultant, and started several other ventures. Today, Jason is the Founder and CEO of FreeWorld. And he is here today to share his incredible story of perseverance and personal growth.

Ep 40Zack Scriven: Being an Influencer

My guest on E40 of #thepozcast Zack Scriven is a self-proclaimed #influencer. A title he takes a lot of pride in but also gets a lot of criticism for as well. His content is focused around Digital Transformation, featuring both clients within his past industry and others. Weed. Grass. Reefer. Dope. Ganga, Skunk. Mary Jane. Herb. Pot. Whatever you want to call it, It's all cannabis, Marijuana. If you have never heard of Shay and you are active on LinkedIN, SHE is probably doing something wrong! Just kidding. I will be honest, when I first started to notice Shay’s presence, I had mixed feelings and preconceived notions. I was a bit envious of her killer content and engagement. So I did what I do best and decided to take my online offline and I reached out and connected with Shay in June and we had an incredible first conversation. Ep 29Rebecca Oppenheim & Gail Buck: Building a Recruitment Business That Gives Back

When did you know that a career in recruitment was right for you? What vertices to do specialize in? What are so many recruiters doing wrong to give us good ones a bad name?I really love your model. Especially the fact that a for-profit B Corp business can be an incredible force for good. It really leverages all of our skills and powers for good to those who need it. What was that ah-ha moment to create this?Let’s talk about “unconscious bias” for those that don't know, what is it? How does it affect TA?Let's talk about attracting top talent AND retaining them from the POV of an agency recruiter, speaking to organizations. For me, the successful ones are the companies that focus on retention first over hiring. It’s a terrible cycle that starts w/ retention. However in today's market/reality, tenures have been decreasing drastically as people are lured to new and exciting opportunities. What can they do? “Diversity” seems to be the buzz word of late, when I say that word, what does it mean to you? Double edge sword? What does the word “authentic” mean to you? Engagement pods/ yay or nay? What is the single best piece of advice that you have ever received? What was your biggest career failure and what did you learn from it?

Ep 22Cheri Garcia: Sobriety and Giving Second Chances

E

For me in my own career and personal growth journey, stepping outside of my comfort zone has been an area of development and tremendous growth that has driven my success. It really kicked into high gear when first deciding to go out on my own and launch my own business, but I wanted to take it a step further. My mentor Marcus Glover has been volunteering for years in the penitentiary system and introduced me to Defy Ventures- where they work with incarcerated men and women to mentor and coach them in creating their own business and prepare them for a better life when released. I have been volunteering with them over the past couple of years and it has been tremendous. One of the biggest (of many) take aways is all about “Second Chances”- and putting life in an entirely new perspective. My guest today, Cheri Garcia is the Founder of Cornbread Hustle, a staffing agency for second chances. Cheri is passionate about helping felons and people in recovery find transformation through employment or entrepreneurship. As someone who has re-invented her own life, Cheri wanted to create a company to help others do the same. Before starting Cornbread Hustle, Cheri found her own transformation and recovery through inventing a tanning bed and getting a career in the TV news industry. Cheri developed expert level skills for marketing and PR and She uses those talents to help individuals getting out of prison re-brand themselves to become the person they want to be and get noticed by the people they want to meet. Cheri and I chatted recently and swapped our stories and I was blown away with her resilience, tenacity and what she has created with Cornbread hustle. I am trilled to have her on today to share her story and a whole lot more. Enjoy and thanks for listening to #thePOZcast

Ep 20The POZcast E20: Joe Gill

E

Over the past 19 episodes I have had HR pros, thought leaders in cultural transformation and seasoned recruiters. But I have not had anyone on who is currently within their career journey specifically, nor have I had someone on who has continued to fight daily. I was immediately drawn to my next guest as I could relate to him directly having fought my own career battles over the past 15 years. Like him, I have been laid off multiple times and have had to dig down deep to harness my tenacity and my dude, Joe Gill is all tenacity. We found ourselves in the same linked in covos, sometimes aligned and other times having good-spirited debate over various topics. Lately Joe has been putting out almost daily content around social media best practices, being authentic and something that hits home super close to me, always adding value or as Joe says “being a valuenecer”, I LOVE IT! After 5 layoffs and surviving thyroid cancer, Joe believes you can overcome anything with resilience, perseverance and blue collar work ethic. Currently, Joe is a social media consultant for his agency, Valuencer. He is one part story shower…One part mad scientist… And one part detective.. These traits and skills help solve their clients social media marketing ROI mystery. For fun, Joe enjoys spending time with his family, drinking craft beer, being a star wars loving nerd and attending as many concerts as he can. Joe is the real deal, salt of the earth and speaks from the heart. He continues to fight the good daily. I love his never say die attitude, both personally and professionally and I am pumped to have him on #thepozcast to talk about his career journey. Please enjoy my conversation with Joe Gill. Ep 18The POZcast E18: Brianna Rooney

I speak about this a lot, I love connecting with fellow recruiters everywhere across the US and abroad. It’s always great to share war stories, talk shop and learn a thing or two from pros. My guest today is a rock star in the world of Tech Recruitment, based in the Bay Area, Brianna Rooney. Brianna Rooney (AKA the Millionaire Recruiter) is the founder of Techees, a highly successful SF-based tech recruitment firm. She also owns a top 100 restaurant mouthful eatery, has an amazing Chef of a husband and two little kids. Diego Danger (yes that’s his real middle name) 5 years old, and a sweet little 2-year-old girl, Lima Ariel. Techees is a firm that places highly sought-after software professionals with high profile,. companies in the Bay Area. Brianna takes the match making approach to recruitment. Hiring is all too similar to dating. If you want to do it right, you have to take the thoughtful road without all the fluff. The saying, “fire fast and hire slow” does not work in the Bay Area. You need to fire fast and hire faster. The other thing I admire is her approach to training within our field. The industry as a whole isn’t trained well so Brianna came out with www.themillionairerecuiter.com - A 3-hour eCourse that is interactive, professionally well done and trains you like she would if you were in her office. Pretty cool. We will dig into that and a whole lot more. I am excited to have her on #thepozcast. Enjoy!

Tribe, I a special one for you today. A true heavy-weight tag team match up battle royal. I bring you two of the top trending podcasters out there right now, curators of all that is awesome, Jordan Paris and Mark Metry. Both have been a tremendous inspiration for me to launch and craft The POZ Cast as well as being genuine humble, helpful and authentic humans, for which I am grateful. First up, Jordan Paris is a 21-year-old author, web-developer, podcast host, and former college athlete. He has been featured in Men’s Health, Yahoo Finance, and Nasdaq as a beacon of light for inspiring people from all walks of life. Jordan's podcast, Growth Mindset University, was ranked #3 in the iTunes Training category and is consistently in the top ten. On the show, he interviews young up-and-comers and the most successful people on planet earth like Kevin Rudolf, David Meltzer, Mark Manson, Rachel Starr, and Adam Posner. Jordan is also the founder of The WordPress Rocketeer, where he focuses on developing engaging websites to launch his celebrity clients' dreams to infinity and beyond. His approach to life and business is simple yet powerful: Don't make a living, design a life. With this creator's mentality, Jordan has been able to produce outstanding results for himself and challenge others to rise above circumstances and take control of their lives. If you don't know my second guest, you must be living under a rock. Mark Metry is the Host of the Global Top 100 podcast, Humans 2.0 featured by Forbes, NASDAQ and Yahoo Finance as the "Top 21 Growing Podcasts you must listen to in 2019." Mark's show has been listened to over 4 million times and features the greatest leaders of our time and frequently converses with Billionaires, Professional Athletes, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists and New York Times Bestselling authors exploring today's dynamic of the human experience in modern technological times of 2019. Mark delivers effective talks, workshops and keynotes centered around human potential, mindset, social anxiety, transformation and using podcasting as a business and has spoken alongside an Olympian gold medalist. Mark is also the Founder of VU Dream, a marketing & brand agency founded and operating in Boston, Massachusetts working with startups, individuals & corporations to help customers imagine new future realities in the fields of emerging technology like virtual reality and podcasting. I connected with both Mark and Jordan over the past 6 months the old fashioned way, reaching out and making it happen. We constantly talk via text or linkedIN and are always lifting each other up. As the pozcast was picking up momentum I knew the time was right to have them on. At first I planned two seperate show but as they push me to innovate, I thought this would be the perfect joint effort. Without further adieu….

I love connecting with fellow recruiters everywhere across the US and abroad. It’s always great to share war stories and learn tips and techniques that work for them that I may be able to incorporate into my practice. In my journey connecting and networking across LinkedIN, I came across Hishem Azzouz, a UK based recruitment pro who has a very unique and strong POV on recruitment. As well, he is the host of the Recruitment Rollercoaster Podcast which focuses on the nuts and bolts of running and building a recruitment practice- its equally entertaining and value add. Hishem Azzouz has been in the recruitment game for a few years. During this time he learned how to utilize personal branding techniques to help him build a successful Recruitment desk. Now he works for an inbound marketing agency that specialises in partnering with ambitions Recruitment agencies. Ep 17The POZcast E17: Jamal (Jay) Salim

E

Continuing the trend, for those of you that have been following along my career journey you may have noticed that I have some guests on that have been integral to my career journey and my next one, Jamal “Jay” Salim is certainly one of them. Jamal was the head of HR when I joined Boombox aka Ergo Interactive. It was a shortstop in my career before I moved over to Vayner but it was critical as I learned a ton in those few short months about myself, tough clients and finding success inside a small agency. More importantly, I made a lasting friend and powerful business connection with my man Jay. Jamal is the VP of HR at Complex, where he is leading the culture of the company synonymous with culture. Prior to Complex, Jay led the HR department at Laundry Service, an Ad Age Top 10 Agency two years in a row, and Cycle Media. Like me, he is Brooklyn Born, him in East Flatbush and me in Sheepshead Bay, which we both take a lot of pride in. Jay is also a Veteran of the US Army, having served in Operation Iraqi Freedom, another aspect of him that I hold in the highest regard. When he is not building an empire over at Complex or rooting for the Brooklyn Nets you can find him scouring the universe for the hottest kicks or being front and center at the Jay-Z private concert. I love this dude and sure you will as well as we dig into all things TA, HR, Team building, Culture and a whole lot more. Enjoy and please comment and give a review/rating if you enjoy! Thanks

Ep 15The POZcast E15: Jeff Stewart

For those of you that have been following along my career journey you may have noticed that I have some guests on that have been integral to my career journey and my next one, Jeff Stewart played a pivotal role. Back in 2012 he recruited me for my role at Erwin Penland, my most favorite job that I ever had. I remember a couple of very distinct things from working with him. First, this dude was a smooth operator- smooth as silk. Not salesy, just got it done, all business. Which makes sense as he was a former pro poker player. Jeff had his own pivot about 2 years ago and now today is a talent strategy consultant at LinkedIn who spends his time helping talent leaders from all industries better understand the behavior of their target audiences and competitors in order to craft winning strategies to attract and engage the very best talent and build winning teams. As I mentioned, prior to joining LinkedIn, he was an agency recruiter who specialized in helping his clients hire top-performing marketing, advertising, communications, and design professionals in New York City. Jeff is the man and on E15 he drops inside knowledge of how both candidates and brands can best utilize the platform and a whole lot more!

One of the core goals of the POZCAST is to give those currently within their jobsearch or those thinking about their next move tactical, actionable advice and best practices to give you the advantage. With me today is a leading expert in this space, Kerri Twigg. Kerri has been helping people to figure out what makes them awesome and how to embrace that awesomeness for over 20 years. First as a creative drama teacher and now as a career coach. She doesn’t tell everyone this, but she’s allergic to formulas that make you look like everyone else. You’re more interesting than that. She knows what it takes to land your ideal job, transition into a new sector, and establish your career brand. Hailing from our northern friend, Winnipeg Manitoba Canada, Kerri helps people use their stories to land ideal jobs. And, if you don't know what kind of work you are looking for, she can help with that too. She is more than a career coach, she is a career-artisan, helping job seekers craft their Stories + Job Search Strategy. She is also a workshop facilitator and contributing writer to the Amazon Bestselling Career Book: “YOUMAP” and just an all around kick-ass human. I connected w/ Kerri as part of Evangela Leclair’s SOS Career Summit that brought 20+ experts in our field together to help jobseekers. I poked around a bit into Kerri’s background and once I watched her insanely entertaining dancing videos (and puddle jumping) I was hooked- I needed to speak with her! So I reached out and we connected a few weeks ago and all I can say is that I wish I recorded that conversation because it was awesome. Join us on E11 of #thepozcast as we go deep into all things career journey w/ Kerri Twigg! Enjoy! Comment, like, review and subscribe! Thanks

Ep 9The POZcast E9: Sarah Johnston

If you have spent more than 10 minutes on LinkedIN, your feed will be flooded with #fakefluencers. “Coaches” that provide zero value and just want to take your money. Being a self-proclaimed a career/life coach is the new hot job. People with zero creds or real success. Time to cut through the BS and showcase those coaches that are the real deal, like Sarah Johnston. They know what they are talking about, add real value and genuinely care about you and my guest Sarah Johnston does just that. Sarah Johnston is a former corporate recruiter and industry "insider" who got tired of seeing talented high-achievers get passed over for opportunities because they did not have the right marketing documents or know how to position themselves in interviews. She launched the Briefcase Coach in 2017 and has had the privilege of partnering with job seekers all over the world. She's been featured in Inc, HuffPost, Reader's Digest and more and was named one of the Top Job Search Coaches to Follow in 2019 by JobScan.

Ep 6The POZcast E6: Minnie Damle

Aside from the loss of someone close, losing your job is one of the worst things that can happen to someone. Whether you are let go, downsized or fired, whatever you want to call it, it's devastating. When I got let go from VaynerMedia about 4 years ago, it was the lowest point in my life. I was broken and didn't know what to do next. Millions of thoughts ran through my mind: What was I going to tell my wife, my friends? How was I ever going to get another job in advertising again? Is this really what to be doing? But at that moment, I had to dig down deep, harness my inner tenacity and drive forward. The rest as you know, is history. On E6 of #ThePOZCast, I interviewed Minnie Damle, the Head of HR of Vayner who actually fired me 4 years ago. We talk about that, what you should do if you feel that you may be underperforming, what to do if you get let go and a whole lot more. This episode brings it home full circle for me. Never burn bridges. Never let one moment define you. Sometimes we fail, but it's how we pick ourselves up and move forward that counts.
