A native of Pennsylvania, he currently resides in Colorado. The Paul Leslie Hour is a collector of jazz records and perhaps no artist is better represented in the library as Dale Bruning. HIs recordings on his own label "Jazz Link Enterprises." Along with his business and creative partner, Jude Hibler he produced a series of concerts and resulting recordings based on the music of great songwriters. Dale Bruning's talent is not something that should be contained. Hit songwriter Roger Cook gives a rare interview about his life as a songwriter. An inductee of the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, Roger Cook has written songs in the pop and country genre. Some of his well known songs include “Long Cool Woman in a Blue Dress,” recorded by the Hollies, “I Believe In You” and “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing” made popular by Coca-Cola. Some of the songs Roger Cook wrote include “You’ve Got Your Troubles” recorded by the Fortunes, “Good Times, Better Times,” recorded by Cliff Richard, “Home Lovin’ Woman” recorded by Andy Williams, “Something’s Gotten Hold of My Heart” by Gene Pitney and others. He co-wrote “I Just Want to Dance with You” with John Prine. Prine recorded it and then it went on to become a major hit for George Strait in 1998. Cook has also been a recording artist in his own right. #147 - John D. Loudermilk
John D. Loudermilk was a legendary songwriter who lived from 1934 and passed away in 2016. I was interested in interviewing him and was told by one of the foremost experts on Loudermilk that he does not give interviews and that's all there is to it. A letter sent to his home was replied to by telephone and he agreed to be interviewed. Although he did make records under his own name, Loudermilk's songs were most known by the versions other bands and recording artists made of them. One of his most successful songs, "Indian Reservation" was a number one hit for Paul Revere and the Raiders. His song "Ebony Eyes" was recorded by the Everly Brothers and "A Rose and a Baby Ruth" and "Abilene" were two of the most well known songs recorded by George Hamilton IV. Then there was David Lee Roth, stepping away from Van Halen to record the Loudermilk song "Tobacco Road." The songs of John D. Loudermilk were recorded by countless prominent artists including Johnny Cash, Marianne Faithful, Mose Allison, Stonewall Jackson, Chet Atkins, Jimmy Buffett, Jerry Lee Lewis, Norah Jones, Connie Francis, Roy Orbison and countless others. Although John D. Loudermilk has passed away, it's my hope that this rare, in-depth interview is of interest to you. Robert Davi is a singer-extraordinaire. This interview was taped back in 2014 and broadcast on the radio and was published in La Revista, a bilingual international magazine. The interview focused in part on his 2011 debut studio album "Davi Sings Sinatra: On the Road to Romance" produced by the legendary Phil Ramone. Of course many know him for the versatile actor that he is, but in my heart and mind I think of him as a singer first. However, Robert Davi is a man of many interests. His columns on political subjects and current events have appeared in online and print news publications. He's not afraid to share his point of view. He's also shared his commentary on the AM and FM airwaves as a radio talk show host. Everone thinks of a different movie when they recall one of the more than 130 films he has starred in ranging from The Goonies, Die Hard, Predator 2, Licence to Kill and Showgirls just to name a few. He was also featured as a main character in the music video of Bob Dylan's take on "The Night We Called It a Day" a song made famous by Frank Sinatra. Most recently, Robert Davi has been in the news because of the release of the documentary film Davi's Way. Directed by Tom Donahue, the film chronicles Davi's quest to honor and recreate Frank Sinatra's October 13, 1974 "Main Event" concert at Madison Square Garden. This interview with Robert Davi is being presented on the podcast as a good foundation for listeners of who the man himself is. Mac McAnally is a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and inductee in the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. A respected recording artist, he's released more than a dozen albums. He's won the CMA Musician of the Year award 9 times now, tying him with the late Chet Atkins for most wins in that category. Mac McAnally is also a record producer and has produced for such acts as the band Sawyer Brown and Jimmy Buffett. His good friend Jimmy Buffett is one of his most frequent songwriting collaborators and McAnally has been a member in Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band for the last 20 years. The songs of Mac McAnally have been recorded by a great variety of artists from Alabama, Jimmy Buffett, Charley Pride, Steve Wariner, Reba McEntire, Ricky Van Shelton, Randy Travis and Kenny Chesney. This interview was recorded backstage at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center in Roswell, Georgia back in 2009. The taped interview was broadcast in a 3-part radio special entitled "Mac McAnally: A Retrospective." Michael S. Harper was a poet and professor. He lived from March 18, 1938-May 7, 2016. He was Poet Laureate of Rhode Island from 1988 to 1993. Harper published ten books of his poetry and was considered one of the most prominent people in African-American literature. Many of his poems were influenced heavily by jazz music. After reading and being touched by a couple of his poems, I wrote Harper a letter and he agreed to be interviewed by telephone. This archival interview with Michael S. Rhubarb Jones was a legendary country music radio personality. He held the distinction of being the longest running morning radio personality in Atlanta, having been a fixture at 106.7 FM on the radio dial for more than 23 years. Rhubarb Jones held many honors including being an inaugural inductee of the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame. He was also well known for his charity efforts, raising money and awareness for a variety of causes. He was a man of many interests among them acting. Jones appeared in the television show In the Heat of the Night and motion pictures like Remember the Titans. His last years were involved in Academia. He passed away in April of 2017. This morning he was on my mind and I listened to this interview with him and was reminded of his incredible personality and perspective. Patrick Williams was a musician, composer, producer, conductor, arranger, big-band jazz leader and music educator. Born April 23, 1939, he sadly passed away Wednesday morning (July 25, 2018). Prolific is a word defined by Webster’s as producing abundantly. When it came to Patrick Williams, the word suited him. He composed the music for over 65 feature films, 100 television films, 25 television series, and on top of that his 19 albums and 30 concert works. Patrick Williams was recognized for his work in jazz and popular music. “Duets” and “Duets II,” the last two albums of Frank Sinatra were arranged and conducted by Williams. He worked with everyone from Andrea Bocelli, Paul Anka, Barbra Streisand, Natalie Cole, Gloria Estefan, and Barry Manilow just to name a few.
