#41: A Family Guide For Annual Reflection
I was hanging out with an old friend recently and telling him about Abby and my annual reflection practice. My friend said, “you do that with your wife?” and he sounded surprised. It was at this moment I realized what I thought was normal, was perhaps not normal for many people. A lot of people reflect on the year or make goals for the new year but they often do this exercise for work or for personal but aloneEvery year in December or January Abby and I go for a hike, date and reflect on the last year. We ask very specific questions so we can celebrate the meaningful stuff, grieve and feel the hard stuff, and learn about ourselves, about our work, about each other, and about our kids so we can show up more aligned with our values in the next year.My friend asked me for the questions we ask each other and the framework for how we reflect on the year and plan for the next one so we decided to put it into a podcast and share it with all of our friends here.If you want to make it super easy, you can listen to this podcast and let us be your guide as you and your spouse go through it together! #37: A Parenting Tool That Works For All - The Defiant, Compliant or Unmotivated Child
We (Abby and I) recently hit one of those parenting walls where our strategies and tools that had worked well up to this point were not working anymore. We believe in the power of contribution in our home and in our family. Society and humans are better when we’re connected and contributing, not just to ourselves but to each other. But lately, the house has been a mess more often than not. Chores were not getting done and all the ways that Abby and I were trying to encourage, motivate, and get our kids to do what we wanted them to do were not working anymore. Our highest energy compliant child was still doing their chores and frankly picking up some of the slack that the other two kids were leaving behind. The compliant child, like me and Abby was starting to feel resentment about it. We had to find a better way to encourage and motivate contribution in our home. So, I went on the hunt to better understand motivation and how we as humans orient to expectations and I found Gretchen Rubin’s book, The Four Tendencies. In the book she describes how each of the 4 tendencies orient to expectations and how we as their parents can align with our kids motivations and help them build a habit of contribution. We’ve been putting the ideas in the book to the test by practicing new strategies with our kids over the past 2-3 months with excellent results and we wanted to share with you how we’re doing it and what’s working for us so you can do the same in your home with your kids!Four Tendencies Cheat Sheet For Parents → https://gretchenrubin.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Four-Tendencies-One-Sheet-Children.pdfFour Tendencies Quiz → https://gretchenrubin.com/four-tendencies/Have a question or comment to share? We would love to hear from you!You can send us an email at:[email protected] to book a free coaching call?Find a time here → https://calendar.app.google/CnogbPVEiXvThLeCAHere’s where you can find us online:Websites:https://www.colemanhousefield.com/https://www.thenaturelabschool.com/Substack:colemanhousefield.substack.comInstagram:abbyhousefieldcoleman.housefield.coaching This is a public episode. #36: The Physical Foundations Of Emotional Regulation
You can make regulating your nervous system easier by taking better care of your physical body.If you know how to drop into your body and process your emotions, bringing your nervous system back to regulation but you’re not sleeping at night, you’re going to have to work a lot harder to regulate your emotions. If you can take 10 minutes and do a thought download to observe your thoughts and get to know yourself better but you’re not regularly and consistently moving your physical body, regulating your emotions will be much harder to do.The way in which you care for (or don’t) your physical body matters and will either make it easier or harder for you to regulate your emotions.Everything we talk about in this podcast episode costs you nothing but your time and the willingness to build new habits or slightly adjust your routine each day.The reward is a physical body that can handle dysregulation in yourself and in other people because its well taken care of.Ready to build a physical foundation so regulating your emotions feels easier?Listen now!Have a question or comment to share? We would love to hear from you!You can send us an email at:[email protected] to book a free coaching call?Find a time here → https://calendar.app.google/CnogbPVEiXvThLeCAHere’s where you can find us online:Websites:https://www.colemanhousefield.com/https://www.thenaturelabschool.com/Substack:colemanhousefield.substack.comInstagram:abbyhousefieldcoleman.housefield.coaching This is a public episode. #33: Selflessness: The Surprising Reason Relationships Struggle
Abby and I argued for years over one, surprising thing: to avoid having an impact on the other person that wasn’t purely positive.Wait, what?! Why would we fight about this?Because we were both trying to be selfless. We really wanted to serve the other person and take care of them and in the process we stopped taking care of ourselves (because wasn’t that the other person’s job now that we are married?)So we stopped asking for things we wanted, like time alone or time with other friends (without our spouse), and even time together. We tried to become selfless and this only resulted in more arguments and less connection. In this episode we refer to Dr. Becky Kennedy as one of our parenting heroes, you can find her here: https://www.goodinside.com/about/Have a question or comment to share? We would love to hear from you!You can send us an email at:[email protected] to book a free coaching call?Find a time here → https://calendar.app.google/CnogbPVEiXvThLeCAHere’s where you can find us online:Websites:https://www.colemanhousefield.com/https://www.thenaturelabschool.com/Substack:colemanhousefield.substack.comInstagram:abbyhousefieldcoleman.housefield.coaching This is a public episode. When’s the last time you heard or said, “I’m really tired” or maybe, “why am I so tired today?”How about when someone asks how you’re doing and you answer, “Tired”.We wear tiredness like a shield and saying we’re tired often lets us opt out of naming what’s really, truly going on for us.In this episode Abby and I get personal, sharing our own stories of shielding ourselves with “tired” instead of admitting that we’re feeling lonely or mentally drained. We’ll share some of the tools we use to help us recover when we’re feeling physically, mentally or emotionally tired. #26: When You Feel Like You're Failing As A Parent - Repair
When we return to a moment that felt bad and add connection and emotional safety, we actually change the memory in the body. - Dr. Becky Kennedy… and this is the power of repair. The power to change the memory in the body by adding connection and emotional safety.I know too many parents who feel like they are failing their kids. They feel like:* They yell too much* They lose their temper too much* They are sarcastic when they could have been kind* They correct when they could have connected* They pickup their phone instead of engaging with their kidsIt feels awful to tell yourself that you’re failing as a parent. No one wants to feel like a failure and yet, we often do feel this way as parents. What can we do? #25: The Art Of Parenting : Not The Math Of Parenting
I used to think that parenting was like math, something like A + B = C. In fact, it seems like a lot of advice and content out there for parents will argue that parenting is like math too. “If you use this parenting method your kids will never have meltdowns or tantrums”.“If you follow the parenting advice in this book your kids will turn out to be good adults.”And so it goes, we end up thinking that there are a lot of wrong ways to parent and only a few right ways and so many of us think we’re doing it wrong. Now, I realize that parenting is actually more like an art. There’s a lot of ways to make art and there’s a lot of right ways to parent your kids.Could this be true? If it is true how would you show up differently as your kid’s mother or father? This is what we’re talking about in this week’s episode! Joins us as we take you on our own journey and how we’ve decided on purpose what kind of parent we want to be.Parenting mastery = you knowing what kind of parent you want to be and showing up consistently as that kind of parent more often than not.Have a question or comment to share? We would love to hear from you!You can send us an email at:[email protected] to book a free coaching call?Find a time here → https://calendar.app.google/CnogbPVEiXvThLeCAHere’s where you can find us online:Websites:https://www.colemanhousefield.com/https://www.thenaturelabschool.com/Substack:colemanhousefield.substack.comInstagram:abbyhousefieldcoleman.housefield.coaching This is a public episode. #24: Why You Don't Have Time For Self Care
We’ve all heard the phrase, “Work/Life Balance” and thought, yeah I want that but I don’t know how to get it, in fact some of us think it’s a nice idea that’s not feasible for us.Maybe it’s possible for other people but not me, not my life. Or maybe, we’ve just resolved ourselves to grinding it out and trudging through our lives. We think things like:* There’s no time for me to have hobbies* There’s no time for a morning routine* There’s no time for anything else, I’m already working a full time job, being a spouse and parent and everything else that comes up in a given week.* There’s just no time to take care of myself, I’m too busy taking care of everyone elseThis episode is here to say, “it’s all a lie”. It’s a lie we tell ourselves to make us feel better about the grind we live in. It’s a lie we tell ourselves because we don’t know how to live any differently. But it’s not true. You can take care of yourself in every season of your life (even the most challenging and demanding ones, ask me how I know). If you want to learn how to truly and authentically take care of yourself in any season of life, no matter how hard this episode is for you!Have a question or comment to share? We would love to hear from you!You can send us an email at:[email protected] to book a free coaching call?Find a time here → https://calendar.app.google/CnogbPVEiXvThLeCAHere’s where you can find us online:Websites:https://www.colemanhousefield.com/https://www.thenaturelabschool.com/Substack:colemanhousefield.substack.comInstagram:abbyhousefieldcoleman.housefield.coaching This is a public episode. #23: The Counter Intuitive Solution To Support Your Spouse During A Hard Season Of Life
If you’re like me you may have been taught things like…* Others before self* It’s your responsibility to take care of your spouse* If your spouse is going through a hard time, your marriage might be in trouble* Happy wife, happy lifeand while these are all nice sentiments they can actually create bad results for you if you use them as guides when your spouse is going through a hard time.Because we believe our spouse’s happiness is our responsibility we often try to change them, fix them, and sometimes even enable them by doing things for them that it would be most appropriate for them to do for themselves. In this episode Abby and I are sharing our counter intuitive approach to support and make space for your spouse when they are having a hard time: Take Care Of YourselfSounds crazy, right?Take care of myself? I’m fine, it’s my spouse who’s struggling! The truth is, if you are living in the same physical space as someone who’s struggling for an extended period of time it’s gonna take a toll on you, especially if you’re not taking care of yourself.Your spouse’s well being and happiness is not your responsibility, it’s their’s. If you want to feel at peace and know exactly how to best support your spouse the next time they go through a hard time, this episode is for you.Have a question or comment to share? We would love to hear from you!You can send us an email at:[email protected] to book a free coaching call?Find a time here → https://calendar.app.google/CnogbPVEiXvThLeCAHere’s where you can find us online:Websites:https://www.colemanhousefield.com/https://www.thenaturelabschool.com/Substack:colemanhousefield.substack.comInstagram:abbyhousefieldcoleman.housefield.coaching This is a public episode. In this podcast you’ll hear Abby and I talk a lot about our values. You’ll hear us say things like:This doesn’t align with our values. We were trying to make a decision that aligned with our family values. In this situation I behaved in a way that did not align with my values. In this episode we’ll talk about what the heck values are (to us). We’ll share how we define our values and how they truly guide us in creating the life that we want. Not the life someone else wants, the life that we want. We’ll share how our values have helped us simplify our lives and our schedules during busy seasons with kids. We’ll even share how we make decisions ahead of time using our values to guide us.If you’re tired of living your life by someone else’s values or trying to do it all, this episode is for you!Have a question or comment to share? We would love to hear from you!You can send us an email at:[email protected] to book a free coaching call?Find a time here → https://calendar.app.google/CnogbPVEiXvThLeCAHere’s where you can find us online:Websites:https://www.colemanhousefield.com/https://www.thenaturelabschool.com/Substack:colemanhousefield.substack.comInstagram:abbyhousefieldcoleman.housefield.coaching This is a public episode. #19: Saying No Is Not A Boundary
Abby: “I don’t love boundaries”Coleman: “I love boundaries”For years Abby and I did boundaries poorly. It was all about controlling and managing other people’s behavior. I feel exhausted just thinking about it now. Then we learned how to do boundaries in a way that required only one thing: how to manage and control ourselves. This simple shift changed our experience of boundaries. All of a sudden, boundaries actually worked and were fully within our control. Other people could do whatever they wanted to do and we knew exactly what we were going to do in certain situations and relationships to stay true to our boundaries.Boundaries I think, are one of the most underutilized life tools to improve your relationships and schedule. #18: How Parents Abuse Themselves And Call It Productivity
We all have the same amount of hours in a day but we don’t all have the same energy capacity. For years Abby and I perfected the art of time management in our work and our home. We maximized all the things. We made the inefficient, efficient. We planned and scheduled something most hours of most days.We listened to podcasts in our down time and on our commutes. Always learning, always growing. Or were we?It’s difficult to retain what you haven’t had time or energy to process and think about. Our time was expertly managed, we were doing a lot of things and we were exhausted. We were exhausted because we weren’t aware of our energy capacity. In a first world where technology and other modern conveniences allow us to have time to do more, it’s easy to do too much. What if you have time but you don’t have energy? This is exactly what we’re talking about in this week’s episode!Learn how to assess your energy capacity and plan your life based on your energy capacity and time, not just time. Why does it seem like some people have all the luck and the rest of us just seem to have tragedy and struggle after struggle in our lives? If I’m, “doing it right”, isn’t life supposed to be mostly positive and happy? What if life is actually 50-50? 50% of what happens to you is the stuff you want and 50% is the stuff you don’t want.Depending on your temperament you’re most likely focused on either all the positive stuff (and avoiding the negative) or all the negative stuff (and taking for granted the good). Therefore, you’re only living half of your life. What if you could change your whole experience of life for the better by thinking new thoughts? What if there was a way to live and be present for 100% of your life without avoiding the “bad stuff” or taking “the good stuff” for granted?Abby and I have changed our lives and our kids lives for the better using this 50-50 principle.Whether you consider yourself an optimist, pessimist or realist we’ve got something for everyone in this episode!Have a question or comment to share? We would love to hear from you!You can send us an email at:[email protected]’s where you can find us online:Websites:https://www.colemanhousefield.com/https://www.thenaturelabschool.com/Substack:colemanhousefield.substack.comInstagram:abbyhousefieldcoleman.housefield.coaching This is a public episode. #10: Capability, Safety, and Technology With Kids
These days, technology makes it easy to avoid thinking, just ask google! It makes it easy to not ask a friend for help, just watch a youtube video! It makes it easy to not become a capable, creative problem solving human. In our home we consider ourselves technology minimalists, my friend Trey calls it Tech Veganism. But what about the way technology can keep our kids safer, right?! Isn’t my kid safer with a smart watch or phone with them all the time? Our answer is NO (and we know that this perspective is likely not shared by a majority of people). We don’t think our kids are any safer with technology. In fact we think that our kids will build real skills and capability by not always having access to technology when they are kids. How will they do this?Without technology at their beck and call they will have to think. They will get to learn how to read other humans body language. They will get to creatively solve a problem. They will learn how to orient themselves using landmarks and natural features like the sun.And each time they creatively solve a problem and think something through and get themselves into a better position they will build capability and confidence. When you feel capable, and you know you can face challenges because you have evidence that you’ve overcome difficult things before, you don’t panic when life throws you a curve ball. Or when you get lost on the ski slope and need to figure out how to get back to your parents.Jonathan Haidt in his book, The Anxious Generation has done the research and has data to show that our kids are actually safer in the real world than on the internet. If you’re curious or offended by what you’ve read so far let me invite you to listen to the podcast where we cover everything from screen time to social media. We’ll also share stories of how we intentionally are building and prioritizing our kids capabilities. We can’t wait to hear from you whether you agree, disagree or think we’re crazy!Have a question or comment to share? We would love to hear from you!You can send us an email at:[email protected]’s where you can find us online:Websites:https://www.colemanhousefield.com/https://www.thenaturelabschool.com/Substack:colemanhousefield.substack.comInstagram:abbyhousefieldcoleman.housefield.coaching This is a public episode. Can you make exceptions to the routine? How do you decide what to prioritize and what to ignore? How do you find time for yourself as a working parent?!All this and more we cover in this episode! You are, after all the adult and you’re supposed to keep your kids safe, right?Maybe it’s better to do less dangerous, risky things with your kids?WRONG!We actually think adventures are the best place to build confidence, capability (two things we intentionally help our kids grow in) and core memories with your kids!Your kids crave time with you, outside, and on an adventure together. Here they can learn what they are capable of and so many good life lessons and skills from you through experience! We define adventure as an activity you engage in where the outcome is uncertain. In this episode we dive into how we adventure with our kids, why we prioritize and value it and the benefits you will enjoy as a parent by getting your kids out of the house and adventuring together!Have a question or comment to share? #2: The Tool That Immediately Improved Our Relationships
If you want to have authentic, deep, healthy relationships with the people you love the most you have to toss out that manual you have for them. Let them be who they want to be and get to know the person you love for who they truly are.We all have relationship manuals. These manuals tell us (not the other person) how the other person is supposed to behave. We expect them to do this not that. When the other person follows our manual for them we feel pretty good about the relationship, when they don’t we often feel disappointed, irritated, maybe even resentful about it.This is a daily practice for us (Abby and Coleman). We still have days where we go back to our manual for each other, our kids, our parents, our friends. We’re practicing dropping our manual for them and seeing the people we love the most for who they truly are. Will you join us in building the strongest, most authentic relationships of your life?Have a question or comment to share? #1: Our Story
Hi Friends! In this episode you’ll get to know your hosts (Coleman and Abby) a little better. We share what our family is like, a little bit about how we got here, why we’re starting a podcast, what we do for work, and fun! We also share a little bit about our kids and TMI about our dogs. We’ll give you a few hints at podcast topics we’ve already recorded or are actively working on for the future. Disclaimer: This was the first podcast we recorded, even before the trailer. Two things: 1. You’ll hear an early podcast name that is not The Ordinary Family. We’re building this plane as we fly it. 😂2. The audio isn’t great. It’s sufficient but we can do better. We’ve already made significant improvements to the audio for future episodes.Bear with us as we learn and get better at all things podcasting. 😅Have a question or comment to share?
