Disease is disharmony; IFS restores harmony. We talk about family and trauma. We talk about the connection and shame reducing power of group work. S2 Ep 77IFS and Masculinity and Jericho Circles with Steve Spitzer and Glenn Williams
On today's episode, I chat with Steve Spitzer and Glenn Williams. Steve, Emeritus Professor of Sociology at Suffolk University in Boston, has taught, researched, and written on crime, justice and social control for three decades. He is Level 2 IFS trained and has presented his use of the IFS model inside prisons at multiple IFS annual conferences and has written articles in the IFS newsletter, The Outlook. In 2002, he founded the Jericho Circle Project, a non-profit organization that seeks to 'bring down the walls' by creating men's support groups in correctional facilities. Since the project began, almost 1000 incarcerated men have sat in Jericho Circles in county, state, and federal correctional institutions in Massachusetts, Maine, and Rhode Island. Glenn participated in the Jericho groups when he was incarcerated for 21 years and later met Steve in a different context. Glenn now 'pays it forward' with his organization, Our House Boston. Glenn is Level One IFS trained and is passionate about spreading the word about our True Essence, especially to black men in urban settings. Glenn is a reentry advocate and community investor who works with various individuals, families, organizations and businesses to raise awareness about and create solutions to the challenges of incarceration and prisoner reintegration. This conversation is AMAZING. I cannot convey this in words. Here are some themes: 'Self' Discovery Masculinity Men's work inside prisons, power of vulnerability, and speaking for parts 'Climbing out of the man box'/Taking off masks The importance of power in manliness for Black Men Glenn states, "Who I pretend to be (what my community and society says I need to be in order to survive) and my Essence are not the same thing." And, "IFS offers the opportunity for Self Discovery and Self Exploration (inside and outside of prison). Discovering that my shame and guilt are parts of me and do not have to define who I am at my core." To find more about Jericho circle go to https://jerichocircle.org/ Check out this 90 minute documentary on the nature of their group work that was filmed at California State Prison Sacramento. That film, produced by the group that initially mentored them in the work (Inside Circle), will give you a taste of the kind of work done (albeit at a somewhat higher level of intensity than is typical of Jericho Circle's groups) on their weekends. You may know him as a lead trainer at the IFS Institute, by his PESI workshops, or as the co-author of the IFS Skills Training Manual. He shares a lot of his own story and is vulnerable and real. I decided to leave in our entire conversation (instead of cutting out some of the beginning bits) because you get a feel for him right from the start. We talk about Spirituality and the integration with Science and Research. We talk about LGBTQ plus, lots about complex trauma, and we touch on parenting and substance use. We talk about psychedelics, mediums, and ascended masters (I had to look that up afterwards). It is a wild ride. On today's episode I talk with Jenna Riemersma, author of the book, "Altogether You: Experiencing personal and spiritual transformation with Internal Family Systems Therapy." We talk about Self being the God image inside us all, and the idea of thinking about sin as the burden of trauma. Jenna talks about restoration; the restoration of our parts with our Self. S2 Ep 69IFS and Unblending on a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. Solo Epi!
On today's episode I share my experiences with my own system on a tough day. You will hear from my parts who like to be dramatic and exaggerate. You will hear from the parts who respond to this with eye rolling and twitching. And, you will hear how sometimes just sitting in the middle of a sidewalk is the best choice. You will hear my dog's squeaky toy in the background over and over again. You don't want to miss this ;) Enjoy!
S2 Ep 68Somatic IFS with Susan McConnell
On today's episode I speak with lead trainer with the IFS Institute, Susan McConnell. Susan recently published a new book on Somatic IFS and it may be my new favorite IFS book. Here is an outline (all of the times are 'ish') Check in- Meditation- 11-16:00 Reconnecting Mind and Body, what disconnects us? - 25:00 Importance of Embodying Self- 33:00 Witnessing through the Body- 38:00 Body Systems- 43:00 The Elements- 55:00 At the end of each podcast I ask guests if there is anything else they want to cover. Typically, I cut this out but I LOVE how Susan processes this question so I left it in - 62:00 I start crying at the end too... oh boy. I loved the meditation so much I made a separate podcast for that. Thinking you (and I!) can revisit that again and again. Want more? Get her book "Somatic Internal Family Systems Therapy: Awareness, Breath, Resonance, Movement and Touch in Practice." IFS Talks Podcast had Susan on twice. Check them out here Susan's website here UPCOMING IFS Masterclass hosted by Derek Scott with Susan on February 12 here I would love to hear from you on The One Inside Facebook page and @ifstammy on Instagram and Twitter. Here is a little gift! A meditation pulled from the full Somatic IFS episode which will be released in a few days. Enjoy!
S2 Ep 66IFS and Belonging with Milena Worsham
On today's episode I chat with IFS Practitioner Milena Worsham as she shares her incredible story of growing up biracial in Texas. Milena is a master story teller and I was drawn in from the beginning. I had this sensation of leaning in close as she spoke. She states, "I grew up believing I was white.... This is a protection for the family... White is a protection. It is safe." The first half of the episode is her and her family's story. The second half is about her connection to feminism and the performing arts. We talk about the womb and the legacy burdens we take on in the womb. We talk about family loyalty and family secrets. We talk about what we are 'allowed' to be as women. I am not going to be able to tell you or share with you here the power of her story and her voice! I decided to sum it all up with the "Belonging." Just listen! I think you will walk about feeling moved and empowered. Check out Milena's website to learn more about her. You can email her at [email protected]. Come say Hi to me at The One Inside Facebook page or @ifstammy on Instagram or Twitter. I would love to hear from you. Enjoy!
S2 Ep 65IFS and Wisdom of Our Parts with Paul Neustadt
On today's episode I chat with Paul Neustadt, a lead trainer with the IFS Institute. Paul has such a warm, engaging teaching style and I just loved our conversation. Paul's answer to the last question, "What would you do instead?" may be my new life goal or at least a daily intention. Here is a bit of an outline: 1. Create our own inner circle - when you have a hard time accessing compassion (or Self) 2. Impacts of individualism (our culture) on our parts 3. Tapping into our own inner wisdom 4. The Gifts of our Exiles 5. Paul demonstrates Direct Access with one of my manager parts 6. Degrees of Blending 7. Inviting exiles (the younger parts of us) to 'tune into their true nature, who they really are' 8. Relational Heart Based Activism 9. When Self energy seems impossible. "What is this thing called Self and how do I get it!?" You can email Paul at [email protected] for information about the Challenges of Applying IFS: Mastering the Basics Seminar which runs about 8 months once a year. S2 Ep 64IFS and Befriending Brain Injured and Pandemic Parts with Laura Schmidt
On today's episode I chat with Laura Schmidt who bravely shares her story of a "life changing event" with openness and vulnerability. It is heartbreaking and inspiring. It is a story of acceptance and hope, of yielding and the need for patience. There are many parallels between the lessons she learned over the past decade and many of our own struggles with the Covid Pandemic. Put your pens down on this one and notice your parts- your sensations, your feelings, and your thoughts. Notice and be with, letting those parts feel your presence and attention as you begin to befriend whatever comes up. Laura has been a Certified IFS therapist for 10 years. She is a PESI Seminar Speaker, Approved Consultant for IFS Certification, and an AAMFT Supervisor. She loves teaching IFS and leading workshops, consultation, and process groups. She is committed to supporting healers doing their own work so they can be more Self-led, effective and energized. -------- Laura's website here Or check out https://lauraschmidtlmft.com/ Laura's Caring Bridge site here Join Laura for Pause for Calm and Connection 1st Wed of each month at noon PT. S2 Ep 63IFS and An Introduction to IFS with Derek Scott
On today's episode, I chat with Derek Scott about "What is IFS?" Do you want the people in your life to know what this 'IFS thing' is all about? Well, here you go! I am THRILLED to give this to you, and hope it is a gift you give to your friends, family, co-workers, and strangers on the street. Derek teaches with humor and wisdom and warmth. I interrupt a lot so that is fun. We also talk about how perfectionism, need to try harder, need to get it right, need to never make a mistake, etc. parts may form and why. We talk about being 'too' sensitive, loud, quiet, etc., and how we can get the message, "It is not safe to be me, I need to Dim My Light as a way of being in the world." S2 Ep 62IFS and Self Led Sexuality with Patricia Rich
On today's episode I chat with Patricia Rich about Self Led Sexuality. Patricia is a certified IFS Therapist and AASECT Certified Sex Therapist and Supervisor. She brings her expertise, her vulnerability, and her warmth to teach us about this new model based on IFS. I had to get a few of my parts to settle down before this episode. I speak for some of them at the beginning, like my giggling Middle School part and my 'Don't say too much personal stuff!' part. Patricia and I spend the first 30 minutes on process and connection and the last half on content. We talk a lot about 'internal consent' and the importance of knowing, hearing from and being with your own parts. You may find you also need to work with your own parts as you listen to the episode. I appreciate Patricia's gentle care and check in's with me and the listener throughout. My favorite part of this episode is towards the end when Patricia pulls it all together with how the six S's of Sexual Self Energy help us assess for Self leadership. Then, she teaches how we can use the 6 F's of IFS to get to know the parts of us who get 'between' us and the S's. It will all make sense! Patricia says when we do this work, the shift in ourselves is revolutionary and worth it. Find out more about Patricia here Email Patricia at [email protected] Look forward to her upcoming Self Led Sexuality Facebook group! S2 Ep 60IFS, Marriage and Stepfamilies with Marushka Glissen
Marushka Glissen, an assistant trainer with the IFS Institute is returning to the podcast to talk about one of her other passions, marriage (See episode 33 for our first chat about Legacy Burdens). Here is a bit of an outline of the show: 1. Gratitude towards partner (esp during Covid) 2. Appreciation of partner (again, Covid) 3. Complications in 2nd marriages and blended families 4. Adult children dealing with intense feelings of loss and avoidance parts (We pause to deal with my parts who are triggered... this is about 23-28 min mark. 5. Guilty parts in 2nd marriages 6. 'Do you want to be right or do you want to experience closeness and love' 7. Using phrases "In my opinion"/"From my perspective" 8. Partners often ask us to stretch... we are better for it 9. Seeing pain (exile) behind partners 'a-hole' behaviors (protector) 10. How to stay when it is really hard? Or separate in a connected way. 11. Five practical tips on communication (about 50 min) 12. Embracing the Suck (the parts of my partner I don't like) 13. Be Curious, Not Furious I share way too much personal information in this episode- about my family of origin (a blended family) and about my marriage. I took a long time editing this and checking with my parts about how comfortable they felt putting this out there. So, here it is. I may take it down immediately ;) Marushka's website entitled Relationship Visions Enjoy!
S2 Ep 59IFS and Drag Therapy with Leon Silvers
Welcome back! Here we are - season 2. On today's episode, I chat with Leon Silvers, founder of Drag Therapy and STAR of Drag Heals (well, he is the star of epi 2, season 2). I'm curious how your parts reacted to the title of this episode. I imagine some of your parts are like, 'What is that?' And some are like, 'Oh, gosh.' And some are like, 'How fun!' I hope you can be with all those parts, those voices inside, and listen to this episode. I promise it is FULL of creativity and energy and fun. I was surprised about what Drag therapy is and what it isn't. I was surprised by how open and creative I began to feel just talking to Leon. Here are some of the gems inside the episode: - Expansive play (how this helps me appreciate one of my critics) - Freedom and creativity - Opening up to all the parts inside - Power of embodying parts and giving them voice - Using fiction to allow 'managers' to loosen up (Meet my manager Tom the lawyer who is dressed in a suit- about 20 min mark) - Wilderness therapy and playing with 'category' (about 40 min mark) Check out: Leon's website Drag therapy website Leon's episode of Drag Heals (season 2, epi 2), coming out in October TED talk with Amy Cuddy about the Superman pose (part of me thinks there may have been some controversy around her after this?) Ep 58IFS and Parts Work with Tom Holmes
On today's episode, I talk with Tom Holmes. He and his wife, Lauri wrote the book, "Parts Work: An Illustrated Guide to Your Inner Life." Sharon Eckstein created incredible illustrations which are in the book and the Inner Active cards. The book and the Parts Work Inner Active cards are some of my favorite IFS tools. I can't express how much I love- and use- the parts cards! Tom has been around the IFS community for a long time- Dick mentions him in the epi we did last fall. Tom tells us his journey with IFS and how his personal work helped him with burnout (we have heard that many times of this podcast). He describes the origin of the book and cards and describes how he has seen over and over again the power of these very special cards across cultures. Tom now travels the world teaching IFS or what he sometimes calls Parts Work, Internal Systems Therapy, or Integrated Internal Systems Therapy. Tom is passionate about integrating Spirituality and IFS and is working on his next book exploring spiritual paths. I wrote down so many quotes of Tom's such as: "As a person gets centered in Self, their spiritual life awakens and deepens." We can "water the seeds of Self" (through spiritual rituals, meditation, nature, etc). "When we bring peace to our inner system, we bring peace to the world." "If we can help people tap into and access Self/Spirit/Connected Energy- what else is more important?" (That is a loose quote!) Email Tom at [email protected] if you want to talk with him about teaching IFS at your organization. Tom's website has many videos of him teaching and with a demonstration of the Parts Work Cards. My son and I love the video of Tom using the Inside Out Puppets! If you want to connect with me, I am at #ifstammy on Instagram and at The One Inside Facebook page. I will see you for Season 2 in September! Enjoy and take care!
S2 Ep 57IFS and Vulnerability in Race Conversations with Nydia Guity
On today's episode, the final for honoring minority mental health month, I talk with Nydia Guity, an IFS therapist, podcaster, writer, and natural hair enthusiast. I had no idea ("but didn't I?," says a part) the 'emotional baggage that comes with hair,' whatever your race, culture, or background. Nydia shares her story- her parents are originally from Honduras and celebrate the Garifuna culture, she grew up in NYC speaking Spanish as her first language, went to college in Vermont, and currently lives in Atlanta. I appreciate her vulnerability and openness as we connect. I ask a lot of dumb white girl questions. Parts of me are embarrassed and I wanted to erase them all.... but I did not. We talk about moms and hair (do you have a mom and hair story? I do too!). We talk about how personal development is a process that does not end and how working with our parts helps tolerate polarizations (all or nothing). We talk about the question, 'What does it mean to be right?' And we talk about hair and all the messages, stigma, and complexities that come along with it. Check out Nydia's website where you can find her writings and podcast! A new deal from brighter vision for The One Inside listeners here! Enjoy-
Ep 56IFS and Your Powerful Voice with Radhalisa Zarzuela and Deran Young
On today's episode I speak with Radhalisa Zarzuela and Deran Young. Radha and Deran met at a level one IFS training in Harlem, NY. Radha shares her story with us which is touching and courageous. I felt inspired by her and think you will too. We talk about 'rules' which may come from our cultures and the legacy burdens we carry. We talk about "code switching" as a person of color. We talk about the impact of domestic violence and the power of coming out of this with "trauma residue" and with a strong voice. And we talk about being in the Miss America pageant (I bet you didn't think I was going to say that!). This may be the last in the minority mental health series for this month! I hope you have been encouraged and challenged. Enjoy!
S2 Ep 55IFS and Racism Impacts with Requina Barnes and Deran Young
On today's episode I speak with Requina and Deran who share their different stories and life experiences. Requina is the friend Deran mentions in our first podcast so I am excited she was able to join today. Requina Barnes, LICSW specializes in relationships, attachment and trauma. Through her Boston, MA private practice, she works primarily with men, women, and couples of color. Requina is a member of the Foundation for Self Leadership Board of Directors. And she is the VP of the BTR Board of Directors. She is available for IFS consultation and supervision- her email is [email protected] Deran Young, LCSW, is the Founder of Black Therapists Rock, an organization that includes over 20,000 professionals committed to reducing intergenerational trauma in marginalized communities. Earlier this year, she was personally recruited by Brene Brown to consult on the inclusiveness of her current Belonging Statement and to inspire other corporate leaders to operationalize diversity in their organizational practices and policies. It is eye opening and interesting, and I definitely walked away with a trailhead or two. To find out more about Black Therapists Rock click here Enjoy!
Ep 54IFS and Black Therapists Rock with Deran Young
On today's episode, I speak with Deran Young, President and CEO of Black Therapists Rock and the IFS Institute's Online Ambassador. We met to record this at the beginning of May. We were still feeling the isolation and challenge of Covid-19 and George Floyd was still alive. We had no idea what was to come. I'm thrilled and honored to give you the first of four episodes devoted to Minority Mental Health Awareness. Today is some of Deran's story- why she created BTR, her experience as a military psychotherapist, the challenge of dealing with divorce, health issues, and becoming a single mother, and her introduction to IFS. She talks about the origins of her younger 'self esteem' part and the freedom and power of unburdening and healing her. And so much more. She is funny and kind and fun and lovely. I'm glad we are going to get 3 more hours (at least!) with her this month. Here is what Deran is reading: You are a Badass at Making Money A Framework for Understanding Poverty Dare To Lead To get more info about BTR: Black Therapists Rock Find the incredible work Deran did around her own legacy burden here: Deran and Dick Legacy Burden demo New Deal for The One Inside Listeners from Brighter Vision here! Ep 53IFS, Attunement, and Synchronicity with Ed Yeats
Dr. Ed Yeats and I chat about IFS, Shamanism, and Tibetan Buddhism. Weaved into our conversation from beginning to end is attunement and synchronicity. We attune to our parts, to one another, to nature, to our own spiritual journey. Synchronicity is an interesting and fascinating part of our journey. This is a long one so here is a bit of an outline: 1. Tuning in, like to stations of a radio 2. "I'm still an oak tree." 3. From spiritual seeker to finder: American Shamanism, Soul Retrieval, and Soul Loss 4. IFS is a form of Shamanism 5. Exposure to IFS- can't help loving it 6. Power animals 7. Self as the Shaman. Guides and Guidance. 8. God, Self, Parts or Guides? 9. Ed's information Last 20 plus minutes: 10. Parallels between IFS and Tibetan Buddhism 11. Spiritual Bypassing 12. Our own beliefs systems impact on the work 13. What I said to Dick when we were alone in a hallway for about 10 seconds (this was a few years ago before he and I did our podcast) Enjoy! Ep 52IFS and The Why Behind Our Weird Questions with Angela Huebner
I'm soooo excited about this episode where I chat with Dr. Angela Huebner, a triple threat therapist, writer, speaker. She is very smart and very warm, two attributes I greatly admire. We talk about the 'why' behind all the weird questions we ask in IFS. My only regret is I didn't ask her more about this! We shift over to talk about Lifeforce Yoga and 'breathing to shift emotion' at about the 40 minute mark. As I was editing this I was like, "Oh no! That is it, I want more!" Angela calls our ability to Focus our superpower and explains- in a way that makes sense I promise!- the quantum physics behind this important question (focus on where you feel that in your body, focus on that part, etc.). Angela explains what is happening in our brains and bodies when we retrieve an exile (really! Isn't that interesting!?). We talk about memory and the brain and longing and spirituality. It is so good. Ep 51IFS and "The Parts Inside of Me" with Shelly Johnson
On today's episode, I chat with Shelly Johnson, author of the fantastic book, "The Parts Inside of Me." Shelly and I spend about half the episode talking about the power of Self and half walking through her book. Shelly shares her powerful story in between. Shelly begins her book with these two meaningful quotes: "If you love what's in your way, they will transform." - Dick Schwartz "I believe that there is a divine spark in every human being, although it may be buried deeply."- Michi Rose One of the things we talk about is how the experience of Self is like Falling into the Arms of Presence. Ep 50IFS and Our Silenced Stories with Anne Hallward
On today's episode- the 50th! episode - I get to chat with Anne Hallward founder and host of Safe Space Radio. Anne is passionate about helping others who have suffered the "repetition of traumatic silence." Not only have they experienced a horrible trauma, they have to be silent about it for fear of backlash. Silence following a trauma perpetuates shame and blame. Anne refers to this as the "wounding of silence." She shares her 7 step process which increases the possibility of having an exiled story welcomed back when it is finally told. We want our silent stories heard and this process helps us have the best chance. Our protective parts are afraid our exiles (and their stories) will ruin everything. But the truth is when our exiles are received by our Self, they are truly welcomed home. To watch Ann's Ted talk go to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dMlsnrLN9U To check out Safe Space Radio's "Talking to White Kids about Race and Racism:" https://safespaceradio.com/talking-to-white-kids-about-race-racism/ Enjoy!
Ep 49IFS and Authentic Movement with Marilyn Unger-Riepe
On today's episode, Marilyn and I chat about AM-IFS. Marilyn has held workshops for several years at the IFS annual conference and in her hometown of Sudbury, Massachusetts. AM-IFS is based on the work of Janet Adler and Mary Stark Whitehouse which Marilyn has integrated with IFS. It is like a moving meditation where you connect with parts and feel witnessed by another. One goal of AM is to help people "extend their aliveness by exploring their feelings and their experience of feeling themselves moving."- Mary Stark Whitehouse I had the privilege of being with Marilyn a few times- It is a powerful experience! I think the theme of this episode is WITNESSING- the power of being with your own inner parts as you move and having a safe, connected witness with you. Find out more about Marilyn here: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/therapists/marilyn-unger-riepe-sudbury-ma/41464 Email Marilyn at [email protected] to get on her mailing list so you don't miss out on future AM-IFS workshops. And join her Facebook group Moving Into Self Compassion. Enjoy!
Ep 48IFS, Body- based therapy, and Shamanism with Jennifer Farley
On today's episode, Jennifer Farley and I chat about how the body can help us connect to parts and Self. We also talk about Shamanism and its connection to IFS. I found this conversation fascinating and I cannot wait to have Jenn on again! Here are a few of the highlights: - Use of movement as a psychological treatment intervention. - How you move and hold yourself reflects how you feel about yourself, how you relate to others, and how you experience the world. - You can get to know parts of yourself by being curious about how that part exists in your body when it is blended. How do you carry yourself when that part is present? - What is that part trying to communicate to your through your body? - Using movement to connect to qualities of Self. - How parts use different developmental Soothing Rhythms (rocking, biting, sucking, wringing, swaying). - Shamanism: The Essence of IFS is shamanic in its nature: guiding us into our internal world, helping us to navigate the energetic world inside, and shifting our energy during the unburdening ritual. Jen offers individual shamanic healing virtually and integrated psychotherapy services to those in CA. She also regularly offers workshops and retreats. You can find all about her (and read her body speaks blog!) at: https://www.shamanhealingmonterey.com/ She offers workshops in collaboration with the Monterey Bay Meditation Studio. Nancy is the Director of LifeMoves Behavioral Health and Training Programs, a California agency dedicated to breaking the cycle of homelessness. Nancy introduced IFS into the training curriculum during the 2015-2016 year. Travis Shubeck is one of the trainees and students who chose to complete his practicum at LifeMoves. Travis is working on an IFS manual for case managers who work with the homeless population. Travis states IFS, "is an opportunity to get out of my head and into my heart." Both Nancy and Travis speak about the power the IFS model in clinical supervision, in working with the homeless population who have been through trauma, and in preventing student/therapist burnout. Ep 45IFS and the Unburdened Leader with Rebecca Ching
On today's episode, I chat with Rebecca Ching who is certified in The Daring Way and IFS. I thought about calling this episode IFS meets Brene' Brown as Rebecca brings us her expertise in both. Obviously, we talk about shame and trauma and vulnerability. How could we not!? Rebecca introduces us to the unburdened leader who is 'trauma informed', compassionate, and resilient. And this leader leads from the 8C's of Self leadership (curiosity, calm, confident, clear minded, etc). We touch on the enneagram, eating disorders, and parenting. And, we talk about Taylor Swift. Enjoy! To listen to Rebecca's podcast and to find out about all the amazing things she is up to go to: https://www.rebeccaching.com/
