It's well known that F1 drivers are some of the fittest athletes in the world, but how do they train and what do they eat? What I didn't know was that necks, shoulders, and an athlete's overall core is under tremendous strain through every turn on every lap for the entire 90 minutes of a race. As long as there have been sports, there have been athletes in search of an advantage. Of all the ways to get ahead and have an inch of speed on your opponent, many have turned to performance enhancing drugs. I’m sure you’ve heard about them in just about every sport in the US, some of the best baseball players of all time have been accused of doping, American football players are regularly suspended for failing drug tests, and of course Lance Armstrong famously finally came clean about blood doping in 2012 vacating his seven Tour de France victories in the process. Some of these performance enhancing drugs have now reached the financial sector with some of the biggest financial institutions on Wall Street. Healing Trauma with Psychedelics | Dr. David Rabin MD, PhD

There has been a lot of curiosity about the continued developments in the psychedelic therapy space recently. Inflammation, Depression, Heat Stress and Sleep - Charles Raison

Its safe to say that there is a hidden depression epidemic in the sporting world. Despite the alarmingly large amount of athletes acknowledging their depression, a lot remains unknown about the role inflammation plays in the development of depression. Now, many athletes have recently spoken up about their experience with depression and as I work closer and closer with elite athletes I am realising that things like jet lag, travel schedules, sleep deprivation and nutrition all aid in the diagnosis of depression by way of inflammation which is why I got Dr Charles Raison on the podcast to help us understand the link between inflammation and depression. Charles Raison, is a professor at the School of Human Ecology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Founding Director of the Center for Compassion Studies in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Arizona. His research focuses on inflammation and the development of depression in response to illness and stress. He also examines the physical and behavioral effects of compassion training on the brain, inflammatory processes, and behavior as well as the effect of heat stress as a potentially therapeutic intervention major depressive disorder. 131: How Your Gut is Speaking With Your Brain | Dr. Azza Gadir, PhD

There's a community of 38,000,000,000,000 microorganisms (mostly bacteria) living in and on us. Seeded by our mothers, this is our microbiome—our non-human half we can’t live without. In an astonishing journey of symbiosis, microbes co-evolved with us, carrying in their genes, and therefore in us, the entire history of the world. The gut. Microbiome. Microbiota. Probiotics, probiotics. What on earth are these words and how do they affect the brain? We have all heard of the gut brain axis. I know I see the word being thrown around and it’s almost impossible to not want to know more about it. This subject has always been a mystery to me because like you will learn in this episode, the microbiome is an entire universe. It takes so much knowledge and time to really understand it and it’s relation to our lives and our health. So in order to understand this fully and in more depth I recruited the amazing Dr. Azza Gadir to the neuro experience to explore the depths of microbiome with us. Azza is an immunologist who completed her postdoctoral training in the laboratory at Harvard Medical School where her published research was focused on the immunological mechanisms that underlie the role of the gut microbiome in conferring protection to diseases early in life. Our brains have been hijacked. We are now living in a world where we are sickened by our food system, the pandemic and of course our habits. It all starts with a bad night sleep- Getting enough sleep won’t just invigorate you; it could also help control how much you eat. A lack of sleep is linked to overeating—especially the overconsumption of junk food—which can lead to weight gain and increased inflammation. Two hormones that help regulate hunger—ghrelin and leptin—are affected by sleep: Ghrelin stimulates appetite, while leptin decreases it. When the body is sleep-deprived, the level of ghrelin spikes, while the level of leptin falls, leading to an increase in hunger.This cascade of events produces a cycle of bad decisions and the bad decisions lead to frustration, anger, resentment and selfishness. 126: The Strongest Weapon Against Heart Disease and COVID-19 is Your Immunity | Dr. ASEEM MALHOTRA MD

My guest today is Dr Aseem Malhotra, an NHS Consultant Cardiologist, and visiting Professor of Evidence Based Medicine. So today, As we continue to learn more about #COVID-19, we continue to see a pattern in those more at risk. People who aren’t metabolically healthy (think obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and hypertension) are much more likely to experience severe complications if they are to get the virus. And to put that in perspective, only 1 in 8 Americans are considered metabolically healthy. That means a lot of us are at risk during this already alarming time. We can start changing that today, though, and create a newfound health baseline while creating a greater level of resilience when it comes to chronic disease and future situations like this. The #MetabolicSyndrome (MetS) has been called a global epidemic by the WHO1 and is considered a major public health problem, with 34% of Americans over the age of 20 estimated to be affected. Among adolescents, 9.4% are estimated to have MetS and the prevalence rises to 44.2% among those that are obese.MetS is known to affect cognition and raise the risk for dementia which is why I have introduced it twice now on The Neuro Experience podcast. In medicine, and specifically in medical training, there are three types of errors: technical errors, judgmental errors, and normative errors. (Technically, there is a fourth called quasi-normative errors, but we’ll save that for another time.) Dr. Aseem draws on his experience in evidence based medicine and talks to us about making good judgement in medicine.
