Precision Nutrition and Metabolic Health

To live long, healthy lives, research suggests looking towards the gut microbiome to ward off chronic diseases like high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, or type 2 diabetes. A whopping 46 million Americans are currently over 65 years of age. As Americans age, they are more at risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. In this part II of the podcast with Dr. Ralph Esposito, we discuss all things nutrition and hormones. We attack this from an athletic perspective and give reference to questions like "what are the hormones that athletes need to know about and what are we doing to mess these hormones up". Other things discussed in the episode: Herbs/ supplements What is oxidative damage and oxidative stress? How are reactive oxygen species formed and how can they harm your cells if present in high concentrations? How can you minimize the creation and negative impacts of reactive oxygen species in your body and brain? What is the best type of diet for your physiology. What is Inflammation and Immunity? Medicine Redefined with Austin Perlmutter

Dr Austin Perlmutter, MD is back on the podcast to give us a a complete overhaul of the immune system, inflammation and what we can do to optimise for both. Some types of inflammation are damaging to the body, while others, usually more transient and playing a signaling role, can be beneficial. Chronic inflammation creates reactive oxygen species that damage DNA, cellular proteins, and lipids. This type of inflammation plays a key role in the development of many diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. The immune system is the body’s natural defense system. It does not reside in one single part of the body—rather, it is made up of a network of cells, molecules, tissues, and organs working together to protect the body. The most crucial part of this entire podcast? When Austin and I break down the what and the why behind increased inflammation and decreased immunity. We go into strategies and interventions you can use to have a better performing brain and live a healthier life. How We Age and What We Should Do About It

My guest today is a revolutionary thinker and medical doctor who’s on a mission to make you younger. Scientists now know that short-term acute “stress” has powerful health and longevity benefits, as long as the stress subsides at some point. For example, it’s long been known that exercise is good for us, but it wasn’t exactly clear why. Hormesis is the likely explanation.Consuming nothing at all can also put your body into a temporary state of nutritional adversity. Extended malnourishment is not good, but smaller doses of calorie restriction can help promote longevity. Adam is the Chief medical officer and co-founder of Span Health. He is also a medical doctor focused on longevity and aging. His background is in internal medicine and oncology with an MSc in genomics. In this episode Adam teaches us:The Long-Term Benefits of Short-Term StressWhy ‘hormesis’ is key to your health and longevityHow to age backwards What Metformin is and who should consume it. 5 Scientific Errors Made by Public Heath Officials - Dr Vinay Prasad

I’m sure you are sick to death of the confusion surrounding COVID-19. I am too! The bottom line is is that there is so much confusion about what is going on and where exactly we are right now. Who should we trust? Who is right and who is just feeding us more politics? Most of the confusion comes from public officials and some physicians, those who we deem to trust, who have told lies and who have failed to abide by the laws that govern their industry. It’s hard to not be angry when you hear a two year old crying about the masking mandate. Should we be masking kids? To help me cut through the noise, the confusion and endless bickering, I was fortunate enough to sit down with Dr. Vinay Prasad to The Neuro Experience podcast. The bulk of our conversion was about Covid-19, or more accurately, the stupidity surrounding it. The misinformation. A doctor who is at the forefront of public health and policy who lead me through the discussion on how to navigate through these tough times.Thank you to our sponsor:Somavedic- use code NEURO at checkoutYou can follow me or contact me here ---Newsletter: https://bit.ly/3ewI5P0Instagram: thediamondboss_Twitter : louisanicola_Please leave a review on Apple iTunes! The Psychology of Billions with Wall Street Performance Coach - Denise Shull

There is an old saying on Wall Street that the market is driven by just three emotions: fear and greed and uncertainty. Succumbing to these three traits are the biggest challenge that most people wanting ultimate success possess. Fear is what stops us from making the hard decisions. It’s called F.O.M.O Greed pushes us to make the wrong decisions. At the end of the 20th century, extreme greed fueled a bubble. Uncertainty is a lack of confidence in our decisions. Investors face an uncertain economic future fraught with danger, risk, and false optimism. In this episode with Denise Shull, performance coach and former trader who uses neuroeconomics and modern psychoanalysis in her work with hedge funds and professional athletes. In this insightful episode Denise and I take a helicopter view of the brain of an investor and trader paying particular attention to the decision making processs, the limiting beliefs holding them from succeeding, how they make great decisions and they protect themselves form losses. We then finish up by cleaning up the confusion around the popular TV series ‘billions’. For those who don’t know, Denise has finished a long battle against Showtime’s TV series Billions. She answers alot of the questions around the lawsuit and reveals the truth behind the battle. 3 Powerful Ways to Increase Your Deep Sleep

This episode is a part II dedicated to understanding the sleep stages. If you haven’t done so yet, I urge you to listen to part I titled “2 Powerful Ways to Increase Your REM Sleep” so you get an understanding of the difference. Despite a better understanding of the genetic, physiological and environmental factors involved in the sleep-wake regulation, many people still don’t get enough sleep—in fact, as many as one-third are not sleep enough, according to the National Sleep Foundation. One potential reason is the public’s lack of information or even misinformation about sleep. In other words, a lot of people still believe a lot of the common myths when it comes to getting a good nights sleep. These myths aren’t supported by current scientific evidence and are likely subtracting from your sleep health. In this episode we will cover what deep sleep is, the main processes associated with deep sleep and then we will finish off with some deep sleep blockers- that is, the things that you might be doing that are blocking your deep sleep. Protecting Players at All Cost

We have a pandemic happening in our society. I'm not talking about COVID-19, I'm talking about the way in which coaches and trainers are training athletes without being properly credentialed. The coaching profession is ever changing. Coaches at each level of competition need to know more than just the Xs and the O's in order to be successful. As the primary individuals tasked with developing athletes from average to elite, they are challenged with not understanding how to optimise an athlete and get them to the NFL while also maintaining their health and well being for the long term. In this podcast I interview Pratik Patel and Alan Couzens on the intersection of performance and longevity. Alan coaches endurance athletes and uses the latest in science to optimise both performance and longevity. Ptraik is the assistant coach at the New York Giants. He also serves as the director of performance, nutrition and is the assistant Strength and Conditioning coach. How Hormones Control Your Performance | Athletes and Traders

As long as there have been sports, there have been athletes in search of an advantage. Of all the ways to get ahead and have an inch of speed on your opponent, many have turned to performance enhancing drugs. I’m sure you’ve heard about them in just about every sport in the US, some of the best baseball players of all time have been accused of doping, American football players are regularly suspended for failing drug tests, and of course Lance Armstrong famously finally came clean about blood doping in 2012 vacating his seven Tour de France victories in the process. Some of these performance enhancing drugs have now reached the financial sector with some of the biggest financial institutions on Wall Street. These institutions are home to tired, hungry, competitive traders who all want that winning pill that will make them trade longer, faster and better. My guest today is Dr Carrie Jones- the hormone expert.Check her out here: https://www.instagram.com/dr.carriejones/Thank you to our sponsors:Timeline Nutrition: timelinenutrition.com - CODE: NEUROEight Sleep: eightsleep.com/louisa - CODE LOUISA for $150 off!Social: Instagram: thediamondboss_Twitter : louisanicola_ Newsletter: https://bit.ly/3ewI5P0The information provided in this show is not medical advice, nor should it be taken or applied as a replacement for medical advice. Mastering Your Performance Psychology

In this episode you will learn the performance psychology principles needed to succeed in any area of life. Performance psychology is the systematic application of psychological principles and techniques to performance, particularly when there is a time element and one must perform on demand. The psychology behind a great performance really lies in one's ability to know themselves. I spoke with Dr. Dimitrios Tsatiris, MD who is a practicing board-certified psychiatrist specializing in the field of anxiety management. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of psychiatry at Northeast Ohio Medical University. He studies and writes about the interface of anxiety and achievement. His popular Psychology Today blog “Anxiety in High-Achievers” is viewed by more than 20,000 readers per month. Discover Your Chronotype to Achieve Peak Performance

There is plenty of advice for how to improve your sleep. I know I have spoken extensively on the topic and I am sure you have all heard about the importance of getting a good nights sleep. But it all comes down to the same assumption that you're doing something wrong, when in fact, it may not be your fault at all. No, I am not telling you to go and spend 3 hours at your favourite werq class either! The amount of sleep you need is individualised however the timing of when to go to bed is actually determined by your genes! So put down the melatonin gummies and stay tuned as we engage in some talkiatry about neurobiology of a chronotype, the importance of determining our chronotype so you can train and recover at the right time. We will go into the scientific literature that explains the effectiveness of chronotypes and knowing your tchrontype then we will of course finish off with determining how to figure out your chronotype. How to Optimise Your Heart Rate Variability | Dan Plews PhD

Its been hailed as the one key biometric anyone can measure easily that gives the best all-round indicator of health and stress on the body. As more devices are able to collect high-quality Heart Rate Variability (HRV) data during the night, a few questions come up: What data should we use as HRV score? What is a good HRV? Why is my HRV plummeting after a glass of wine? How can I increase my HRV? I have been wanting to dive deep into the HRV literature for quite some time. My community is very big on wearables such as wearing the WHOOP and our ring so they know what HRV is and they have, of course been asking me for advice on understanding HRV. I went out in search of the best person to talk to about this and came across Dan Plews an Applied Sports Scientist, Researcher and coach.Thank you to our sponsors:Eight Sleep: https://bit.ly/2ULzSzaGet $150 off on any product at Eight Sleep Athletic Greens: http://athleticgreens.com/neuroFind Dan here: https://www.instagram.com/endure_iq/Social: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thediamondboss_/Twitter : https://twitter.com/louisanicola_ Newsletter: https://bit.ly/3ewI5P0The information provided in this show is not medical advice, nor should it be taken or applied as a replacement for medical advice. Healing Trauma with Psychedelics | Dr. David Rabin MD, PhD

There has been a lot of curiosity about the continued developments in the psychedelic therapy space recently. Designer drugs such as, Psilocybin, 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) and lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) have started to emerge within the athletic space. In May of 2019, a video was leaked featuring the Washington Capitals’ Evgeny Kuznetsov sitting near two lines of a white, powder-like substance that many presumed to be cocaine. It was taken while the team was in Las Vegas to play the Golden Knights. When I read this it immediately prompted me to find out more about what this substance does to the brain which is why I recruited the wonderful Dr David Rabin, MD PhD to the neuro experience podcast via clubhouse. Dr. Rabin specializes in treatment-resistant mental illnesses including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), psychosomatic disorders, personality disorders, chronic pain disorders, insomnia, and substance use disorders using minimal and non-invasive treatment strategies. “Psychedelic medicine is unique because it allows us, whether it's MDMA or LSD, or psilocybin or ketamine, to step outside of that default mode and look back at ourselves, and really reappraise what it means to be us,” he says. How sleep delays ageing with Dr. Frank Lipman, MD

Sleep is essential for human health. Not getting enough sleep or having poor, fragmented sleep increases a person's risk of developing many chronic illnesses, including cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. With nearly one-third of all adults in the United States reporting that they are sleep-deprived, the importance of getting a good night's sleep takes on tremendous significance which is why I have brought on Dr. Frank Lipman to the Neuro Experience podcast to discuss his latest book ‘better sleep, better you’ which is available now for pre order. Dr Lipman is a vocal pioneer of integrative and Functional Medicine, or what he calls “good medicine.” Dr. Lipman is the founder of Eleven Eleven Wellness Center and the Chief Medical Officer at The Well. Inflammation, Depression, Heat Stress and Sleep - Charles Raison

Its safe to say that there is a hidden depression epidemic in the sporting world. Despite the alarmingly large amount of athletes acknowledging their depression, a lot remains unknown about the role inflammation plays in the development of depression. Now, many athletes have recently spoken up about their experience with depression and as I work closer and closer with elite athletes I am realising that things like jet lag, travel schedules, sleep deprivation and nutrition all aid in the diagnosis of depression by way of inflammation which is why I got Dr Charles Raison on the podcast to help us understand the link between inflammation and depression. Charles Raison, is a professor at the School of Human Ecology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Founding Director of the Center for Compassion Studies in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Arizona. His research focuses on inflammation and the development of depression in response to illness and stress. He also examines the physical and behavioral effects of compassion training on the brain, inflammatory processes, and behavior as well as the effect of heat stress as a potentially therapeutic intervention major depressive disorder. In todays episode we go into 1:Relationship between depression and inflammation: 2. Mediators of inflammation 3. Temperature: heat vs cold 4. What role does hyperthermia play in depression and what are the therapeutic effects of whole-body hyperthermia for major depressive disorder.3. The role that sleep plays in inflammation and depression4. Sports Neurology. Managing Concussions, Migraines and Performance

What is a sports neurologist? With the dramatic increase in head injuries in football and other sports, this relatively new subspecialty of neurology has become increasingly prominent. We are joined today by one of the first board certified sports neurologists in the country- Dr. Stephanie Alessi-LaRosa, MD, a sports neurologist with the Hartford Healthcare Ayer Neuroscience Institute For any coach or trainer or athlete, you will want to tune in and take notes. This episode not only lays the foundation to understanding the necessity of a sports neurologist but it also introduces to the various neurological conditions that athletes from all different sports posses.Sports neurology is a relatively new specialty in neurology concerned with the study and management of sports-related neurologic injuries that may develop as a result of participation in athletic activities. Concussion is the most recognized example of a sport-related injury. However, athletes also experience injuries to the spine (spinal cord), peripheral nerves, and the neuromuscular system, and rarely, traumatic brain injuries of greater severity. "Baseline testing is a way to evaluate athletes prior to having a concussion or after fully recovering from a concussion where the testing can be repeated if an acute concussion is suspected and also to assist the clinician to determine when it is safe for them to return to play" ~ Dr. Stephanie Alessi-LaRosa, MDThank you to our Sponsors:Eight Sleep- get $150 off using code NEUROMUSE - get 10% off using code NEUROFind Stephanie here: https://bit.ly/3ok6oRXConnect with her on Twitter here: https://bit.ly/2YnpmfHREVIEW/SHARE: If you enjoyed the episode and have a spare 1-2 minutes please leave a review on iTunes so the Neuro Experience podcast ranks higher and becomes more discoverable for other listeners. 134: Muscle Centric Medicine for Longevity and Brain Health | Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, DO

Dr Lyon is a function medicine physician specialising in muscle centric medicine , this concept of medicine focus on the largest organ in the body- skeletal muscle as the key to longevity. Her ground-breaking concepts eliminate unwanted body fat and build muscle, allowing for continued metabolism boosts and long-term wellness. The key is to eat the right kinds of protein, and enough of them, at each meal. This stimulates the body’s natural muscle-building process, called “muscle protein synthesis”. Dr. Lyon also promotes exercise as another way to stimulate muscle protein synthesis. More than just physical activity, adults need muscle-targeting exercises to ensure long-term health and decreased risk of chronic disease. This episode will inspire you to move your body, lift some heavy weights and eat more protein. What you thought you knew about muscle is nothing compared to what you will learn in this episode. In the episode we go over: 1. Muscle being the The organ of longevity2. Why you should focus on building muscle instead of focusing on losing fat3. The more muscle you have, the more likely you are to live4. The amount of protein we need to stimulate muscle protein synthesis5. BCAA's - spotlight focus on Leucine. 5. Women and muscle gain6. 133: Change Your Brain Through Physical Activity | Ryan Glatt, MSc

Exercise affects the brain in many ways. It increases heart rate, which pumps more oxygen to the brain. It aids the release of hormones which provide an excellent environment for the growth of brain cells. Exercise also promotes brain plasticity by stimulating growth of new connections between cells in many important cortical areas of the brain. Research from UCLA even demonstrated that exercise increased growth factors in the brain which makes it easier for the brain to grow new neuronal connections.Ryan Glatt is a psychometrist and Brain Health Coach at the Brain Health Center in the Pacific Neuroscience Institute. With a strong background in exercise science and human health, Ryan develops curricula specifically targeted towards those with dementia, Parkinson’s disease, Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), and traumatic brain injury, coaching individuals towards optimal brain health. The episode touches on the following points: What is the benefits of exercise on the brain - brain functionality and blood flow FITLIGHT trainer- science behind the light. How do we get better cognitively by using reaction training software What does science tell us in terms of what exercises to do for brain health Literature of athletes and brain health - transferable skills for cognition Precision medicine and brain health - functional medicine approaches The disconnect between nutrition and exercise Nootropics I hope you all enjoy this episode!REVIEW/SHARE: If you enjoyed the episode and have a spare 1-2 minutes please leave a review on iTunes so the Neuro Experience podcast ranks higher and becomes more discoverable for other listeners. 132: Optimising Health Instead of Fixing Sickness | Dr. Molly Maloof, MD

This week on The Neuro Experience podcast I speak with Dr. Molly Maloof on blood sugar, hormones, self biohacking with labs and imaging and the importance of stress-relieving recovery practices. We also get into Glucose Monitoring, Mitochondrial Stress, & Mental Health. During the episode, Molly goes into discussing 'what is health' and what is 'sickness'? The old definition of health is that it is a static state. Molly is on a mission to radically extend healthspan, maximize human potential, and redefine health care using medicine, technology, education, & media. Her fascination with innovation permeates her concierge medical practice that is focused on providing personalized medicine to entrepreneurs, technology executives, investors, & celebrities in Los Angeles and the Bay Area. The new idea of health is the ability to adapt and manage it when faced with adversity! This statement was made abundantly clear throughout the organic conversation that Louisa and Molly have as they delve into the hormonal adaptations of women during their 30's and draws an insight into self diagnosis as a means for longevity - 'know thyself'. Homeostasis vs Allostasis, which is our ability to achieve stability through behavioral change and mental health through the ability of an individual to reach their potential, cope with stressors and contribute to their community. The key to healthy aging by fundamentally building bioenergetic capacity by building mitochondria, essentially our power plants. 131: How Your Gut is Speaking With Your Brain | Dr. Azza Gadir, PhD

There's a community of 38,000,000,000,000 microorganisms (mostly bacteria) living in and on us. Seeded by our mothers, this is our microbiome—our non-human half we can’t live without. In an astonishing journey of symbiosis, microbes co-evolved with us, carrying in their genes, and therefore in us, the entire history of the world. The gut. Microbiome. Microbiota. Probiotics, probiotics. What on earth are these words and how do they affect the brain? We have all heard of the gut brain axis. I know I see the word being thrown around and it’s almost impossible to not want to know more about it. This subject has always been a mystery to me because like you will learn in this episode, the microbiome is an entire universe. It takes so much knowledge and time to really understand it and it’s relation to our lives and our health. So in order to understand this fully and in more depth I recruited the amazing Dr. Azza Gadir to the neuro experience to explore the depths of microbiome with us. Azza is an immunologist who completed her postdoctoral training in the laboratory at Harvard Medical School where her published research was focused on the immunological mechanisms that underlie the role of the gut microbiome in conferring protection to diseases early in life. For this work, she holds issued and pending patents and has collaborated with industry partners to accelerate the discovery of microbiome-related immunotherapies for food allergy. She is also the head of research and development at Seed. If you haven’t checked them out please do so on Instagram and you will be just as inspired as me when you see their work of art literally coming to life on your phone. Seed is an ecosystem of scientists, doctors, innovators, entrepreneurs, and translational storytellers from around the world. Who collectively believe in the potential of the microbiome to improve human and planetary health. Together, they're raising the bar in bacteria. In this episode you will learn: What is the microbiome and how does it play a role in our BrainHealth Azza Gadir’s career from start to finish- how women in science are shaping the world What is the immune system and the ‘gut microbiome’ The link between neurodegenerative disease and the gut microbiome What is B12 deficiency and is it related to the gut microbiome? How can we impact the function of our microbiome What is the ‘gut-brain axis’ and the link between mental health and gut bacteria Best diet to eat for a health microbiome How to protect your gut throughout the lifespan REVIEW/SHARE: If you enjoyed the episode and have a spare 1-2 minutes please leave a review on iTunes so the Neuro Experience podcast ranks higher and becomes more discoverable for other listeners. 130: Take Control Of Your Brain | Dr. David MD and Dr. Austin Perlmutter MD

Our brains have been hijacked. We are now living in a world where we are sickened by our food system, the pandemic and of course our habits. It all starts with a bad night sleep- Getting enough sleep won’t just invigorate you; it could also help control how much you eat. A lack of sleep is linked to overeating—especially the overconsumption of junk food—which can lead to weight gain and increased inflammation. Two hormones that help regulate hunger—ghrelin and leptin—are affected by sleep: Ghrelin stimulates appetite, while leptin decreases it. When the body is sleep-deprived, the level of ghrelin spikes, while the level of leptin falls, leading to an increase in hunger. This cascade of events produces a cycle of bad decisions and the bad decisions lead to frustration, anger, resentment and selfishness. Brain Wash: Detox Your Mind for Clearer Thinking, Deeper Relationships, and Lasting Happiness is co-authored by best-selling author David Perlmutter, MD and Austin Perlmutter, MD. David is a Board-Certified Neurologist and five-time New York Times bestselling author. He serves on the Board of Directors and is a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition. He received his M.D. degree from the University of Miami. Austin is David’s son, who is a board certified internal physician who also graduated from the university of Miami. His academic focus is in understanding the decision-making process, how it is influenced by internal and external factors, and how it changes our health and illness outcomes. Austin, along with David Perlmutter, M.D., is the co-author of the newly released book, Brain Wash. At the beginning of the show David and Austin give a detailed discussion about the science of inflammation from a neural perspective. In this episode we discuss:Neural Inflammation Connection between sleep and increased hunger The Neuroscience of decision making How exercise impacts the brain for the betterWhat is sugar? Where can it be found? What is sugars impact on brain function and cognitive performance? The Ten-Day Brain Wash reset for your brain and body Where to learn more about Drs. 127: Decoding the Female Brain. Hormones, Brain Areas that Change Throughout the Lifespan | Dr. Sarah McKay

For women, understanding how the brain works during the key stages of life - in utero, childhood, puberty and adolescence, pregnancy and motherhood, menopause and old age - is essential to their health. Dr Sarah McKay is a neuroscientist who knows everything worth knowing about women's brains, and shares it in this fascinating, essential episode.***EPISODE SHOW NOTES**** Understanding how the brain grows and changes through the stages of life is key to health and wellbeing. This is not an episode about the differences between male and female brains, nor a an episode using neuroscience to explain gender-specific behaviours, the 'battle of the sexes' or 'Mars-Venus' stereotypes. This is an episode about what happens inside the brains and bodies of women as they move through the phases of life, and the unique - and often misunderstood - effects of female biology and hormones. Dr McKay gives insights into brain development during infancy, childhood and the teenage years (including the onset of puberty) and also takes a look at mental health as well as the ageing brain. The episode weaves together findings from the research lab, case studies and interviews with neuroscientists and other researchers working in the disciplines of neuroendocrinology, brain development, brain health and ageing. In the episode you will learn specifically about the brain during: 1. Phases of brain changes: Childhood, Puberty, The Menstrual Cycle, The Teenage Brain, Depression and Anxiety, Pregnancy and Motherhood, Menopause, The Ageing Brain2. Structural differences between male and female brains 3. Biggest studies that have been done on the gendered brain 4. What happens in the brain of a male when he is becoming a father? 5. Hormones related to brain change 6. What is brain fog? how to overcome brain fog 7. Are women crazy when they have PMS? What happens to the brain when women are menstruating 8. Neurobiology and evolution of the brain9. How how environment shapes our mind and brain "the meaning we make of our life experiences changes the contexts that we're in" We also have some fun commentary and laughter where I share some personal stories about myself and what it means to be a woman who experiences a crazy surge of hormones once a month. 126: The Strongest Weapon Against Heart Disease and COVID-19 is Your Immunity | Dr. ASEEM MALHOTRA MD

My guest today is Dr Aseem Malhotra, an NHS Consultant Cardiologist, and visiting Professor of Evidence Based Medicine. He is a world renowned expert in the prevention, diagnosis and management of heart disease.EPISODE SHOW NOTES HERE Dr Aseem's passion for writing on and researching various health related issues has resulted in a vast quantity of published academic articles in major medical journals, as well as many other public acknowledgments. So today, As we continue to learn more about #COVID-19, we continue to see a pattern in those more at risk. People who aren’t metabolically healthy (think obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and hypertension) are much more likely to experience severe complications if they are to get the virus. And to put that in perspective, only 1 in 8 Americans are considered metabolically healthy. That means a lot of us are at risk during this already alarming time. We can start changing that today, though, and create a newfound health baseline while creating a greater level of resilience when it comes to chronic disease and future situations like this. The #MetabolicSyndrome (MetS) has been called a global epidemic by the WHO1 and is considered a major public health problem, with 34% of Americans over the age of 20 estimated to be affected. Among adolescents, 9.4% are estimated to have MetS and the prevalence rises to 44.2% among those that are obese.MetS is known to affect cognition and raise the risk for dementia which is why I have introduced it twice now on The Neuro Experience podcast. In medicine, and specifically in medical training, there are three types of errors: technical errors, judgmental errors, and normative errors. (Technically, there is a fourth called quasi-normative errors, but we’ll save that for another time.) Dr. Aseem draws on his experience in evidence based medicine and talks to us about making good judgement in medicine. In this episode you will learn: The five biomarkers of metabolic dysfunction Dr. Aseem’s personal experience with belly fat and excessive sugar intake Health disparities and COVID-19 outcomes Metabolic disease, excess body fat, and chronic inflammation lead to worse outcomes from COVID-19, as well as from the flu Intermittent fasting and the ketogenic diet Drivers of chronic disease and misery Evidence based medicine - why doctors need to stay up-to-date and informed Misinformation in the medical community Dr. Aseem can be found here. Episode Show Notes: https://bit.ly/3hXnQZTMy guest this week is Dr. Casey Means, a medical doctor who completed her medical degree and training at Stanford school of medicine and subsequently trained to be a Head & Neck Surgeon before transitioning to Functional Medicine. Her training with the Institute for Functional Medicine allows her to help you stay healthy and heal from within. She has spent thousands of hours in the operating room and hospital, and has seen almost everything that can go wrong in personal health. I think you’re all going to really like the episode today as we dive deep into metabolic health, blood glucose, insulin and neurology. We focus alot on hyperinsulinemia, metabolic dysfunction and genetics but we also talk alot about the software we now have available to us to track and monitor your blood glucose in real-time. So I guess this podcast is great for anyone who is being introduced to blood glucose and really wants to understand how they can live a longer and healthier life by stabilising their blood glucose levels. I would say that one of the things in this podcast that fascinated me and really caught me by surprise was how important fluctuations in blood #glucose are and why getting them under control can really have a positive effect on not just your metabolic health but also the health of your brain with respect to stress and cortisol.Find Casey here: https://bit.ly/31UxMhiFind Levels here: https://bit.ly/3gUVRsM The Neuro Athletics Newsletter Instagram: @louisanicola_Twitter : @louisanicola_YouTube: @Louisa NicolaThe Neuro Experience Podcast is proud to have hosted: Dr Andrew Huberman, Dr Gabrielle Lyon, Dr Layne Norton, Thomas DeLauer, Shawn Stevenson, Dr. Rocio Salas-Whalen, Saad Alam, Uma Naidoo, Dr. Lanna Cheuck, Angela Lee Pucci, Jillian Turecki, Dr. Jordan Feigenbaum, Dr. Darren Candow, Dr. Sue Varma, Evy Poumpouras, Dr Casey Means, Renee Deehan, Dr Chris Palmer, Dr Charles Brenner, Dr Joe Zundell, Dr Ray Dorsy, Dr Dale Bredeson, Dr. Ben Bikman Learn more about your ad choices. 119: Brain Health, Heavy Metals, Cortisol and Holistic Medicine | Dr. Christian Gonzalez N.D

There is no "magic pill" for your brain. It is part of a whole ecosystem that includes your body and all your surroundings—that means the artificial flavors, dyes and additives in your favorite junk food and the chemicals in the hair spray you just inhaled. Your brain is only 2 percent of your bodyweight, yet consumes 20 percent of the body's glucose. Naturopathic medicine is defined as a drugless, noninvasive, rational and evidence-based system of medicine imparting treatments with natural elements based on the theories of vitality, toxemia and the self-healing capacity of the body, as well as the principles of healthy living (Nair and Nanda, 2014).Naturopathic physicians combine the wisdom of nature with the rigors of modern science. Steeped in traditional healing methods, principles and practices, naturopathic medicine focuses on holistic, proactive prevention and comprehensive diagnosis and treatment. By using protocols that minimize the risk of harm, naturopathic physicians help facilitate the body’s inherent ability to restore and maintain optimal health.Dr. Gonzalez became proficient in integrative oncology at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America through exposure to a range of disciplines and modalities. During his residency at the center, he was able to treat more than 700 patients and he had a long lasting impact on his patients, physically, spiritually, and emotionally. He was able to obtain his Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine at the University of Bridgeport College of Naturopathic Medicine in 2014. During his training, Dr. Gonzalez underwent clinical rotations in general medicine, botanical, oncology, homeopathy, pediatrics and mind-body medicine, including a preceptorship at the NYU Langone Integrative Urology Center. In this episode we discuss: 1. Brain health from a holistic perspective 2. What does cortisol do to our body 3. Nootropics- what they are, how to take them and which ones are the best on the market 4. The role that herbs and vitamins play in healing the body 5. Anti-aging secrets and how to age backwards. 6. 118: Dirty Medicine and How Generic Drugs Are Poisoning Us | Katherine Eban

The Generic Drugs You're Taking May Not Be As Safe Or Effective As You ThinkAs the cost of prescription medication soars, consumers are increasingly taking generic drugs: low-cost alternatives to brand-name medicines. Often health insurance plans require patients to switch to generics as a way of controlling costs. But journalist Katherine Eban warns that some of these medications might not be as safe, or effective, as we think.Eban has covered the pharmaceutical industry for more than 10 years. She notes that most of the generic medicines being sold in the U.S. are manufactured overseas, mostly in India and China. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration states that it holds foreign plants to the same standards as U.S. drugmakers, but Eban's new book, Bottle of Lies, challenges that notion. She writes that the FDA often announces its overseas inspections weeks in advance, which allows plants where generic drugs are made the chance to fabricate data and results. In this episode we discuss: 1. FDA approval process of drugs 2. The lies behind the pharmaceutical industry 3. What are generic drugs and what are brand label drugs?4. Where are our generic drugs made?5.The story of Ranbaxy: An Indian drug company whose business model was fraud and deceit6.How the FDA approves drugs, the impact of “first to file”, and Peter’s tangent on moral corruption7.A booming generic drug market and the FDA struggling to keep upDinesh’s internal investigation finds widespread fraud and falsified data inside Ranbaxy8.How concerned should you be when buying a generic drug from your local pharmacy? 9. How to investigate your own drugs for quality to ensure you are getting what you need 10. An innovative pharmacy that tests all its drugs for quality 11. Reforming the FDA and generic drug industry: Why we need reform and ideas on how to do it12. What you should know about the NFL, Concussions, and Brain Damage

Football isn’t just a contact sport — it’s a dangerous game of massive bodies colliding into one another. And while it may seem obvious that this sport can do extraordinary damage to brains and bodies, it’s taken far too long for the NFL, the medical community, and football fans to fully reckon with this. On the episode today we are speaking with Morgan Ingmanson who is the Director of Medical Affairs, at Evoke Neuroscience- she’s the leading scientist in computational EEG neuroimaging, providing expert consultations to assist physicians in using electrophysiology biomarkers to diagnose cognitive disorders such as MCI, dementia, and pseudo-dementia. In this episode we discuss: 1. What is a concussion and what is a CTE2. How can you diagnose a concussion? 3. What happens to someone after they take regular blows to the head4. The truth about the NFL protocol 5. Evoke Neuroscience , EEG and qEEG6. Biomarkers for diagnosing concussions 7. When can a player return to play after sub-concussive impact8. Where to go to get a brain scan 9. 116: The Neurobiology of Stress | Dr. Andrew Huberman

Andrew Huberman is an American neuroscientist and tenured professor in the Department of Neurobiology at the Stanford University School of Medicine. He has made several important contributions to the fields of brain development, brain plasticity, and neural regeneration and repair. #AndrewHuberman has been fascinated by humans and in particular, the human brain since a very early age and demonstrates not only an incredible curiosity, but a magnificent understanding of this and many other surrounding subjects for example, how we deal with stress, anxiety, grief etc. and how we can draw positive conclusions from seemingly negative situations. In this episode we discuss: 1.The brains response to stress and how we adapt to stress 2. How to get into deep sleep and what vitamins to take to help with deep sleep 3. Neurotransmitters 4. Nootropics 5. Best way to wake up (morning rituals) 6. Consequences of modafnil and melatonin 7. Neuroplasticity 8. 115: The Plant Fed Brain | Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, MD

There is increasing evidence showing that the dynamic changes in the gut microbiota can alter brain physiology and behavior. Cognition was originally thought to be regulated only by the central nervous system. However, it is now becoming clear that many non-nervous system factors, including the gut-resident bacteria of the gastrointestinal tract, regulate and influence cognitive dysfunction as well as the process of neurodegeneration and cerebrovascular diseases.Dr B, as he prefers to be called, has a fun and agenda-free way of bringing the latest in gut health science to his clinical practice, website and social media (@theguthealthmd) to educate the world. Dr B’s resume speaks for itself – here is just a short list of some of the things he has already achieved in his career:Qualified MD, a graduate of Georgetown University School of MedicineBoard-certified in internal medicine and GastroenterologyMaster of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI) from Northwestern University and a certificate in nutrition from Cornell UniversityAt UNC he received the highest clinical award and was Chief Gastroenterology FellowHe has published more than 20 scientific articles and given more than 40 presentations at national meetingsIn this episode we discuss the following points: 1. How the gut is the second brain2. The role of neuroscience in relation to brain health3. What Microbiome is4. The role of Pre and #Probiotics We take a deep dive into the microbiome and its pathways. We then move forward to discuss what contributes to a healthy microbiome and what causes disease. The Neuro Athletics Newsletter Instagram: @louisanicola_Twitter : @louisanicola_YouTube: @Louisa NicolaThe Neuro Experience Podcast is proud to have hosted: Dr Andrew Huberman, Dr Gabrielle Lyon, Dr Layne Norton, Thomas DeLauer, Shawn Stevenson, Dr. Rocio Salas-Whalen, Saad Alam, Uma Naidoo, Dr. Lanna Cheuck, Angela Lee Pucci, Jillian Turecki, Dr. Jordan Feigenbaum, Dr. Darren Candow, Dr. Sue Varma, Evy Poumpouras, Dr Casey Means, Renee Deehan, Dr Chris Palmer, Dr Charles Brenner, Dr Joe Zundell, Dr Ray Dorsy, Dr Dale Bredeson, Dr. Ben Bikman Learn more about your ad choices. 114: The Mathematics of Biology & COVID-19 | KIT YATES

Maths is an unloved subject. It’s a commonplace view that maths is hard, that maths is abstract and removed from everyday concerns. Why do you think that is?In today’s society, mathematics underpins almost everything we do. It is vital to the ways in which we communicate with each other and the methods we use to navigate from place to place. It has completely altered how we buy and sell and it has revolutionised the manner in which we work and relax. Its influence can be felt in almost every courtroom and every hospital ward, in every office and every home. Maths might even explain why time seems to speed up as we get older.Kit Yates is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mathematical Sciences and co-director of the Centre for Mathematical Biology at the University of Bath. He completed his PhD in mathematics at the University of Oxford in 2011. His research demonstrates that mathematics can be used to describe all sorts of real-world phenomena: from embryo formation to locust swarming and from sleeping sickness to egg-shell patterning. In this episodes we go through 7 mathematical principles of life: 1. Thinking Exponentially2. Sensitivity, Specificity, and Second Opinions3. The Laws of Mathematics4.
