Ep 98TMHS 098: Developing A Champion's Mindset, Winning Gold, And Staying Fit For A Lifetime - With Jackie Joyner-Kersee
There is a quote from Robert Fritz that says, "If you limit your choices only to what seems possible or reasonable, you disconnect yourself from what you truly want, and all that is left is compromise." Most of us are living a life of compromise. We may desire deeply to get out of it, but often times we just don't know how. Focusing on what seems "possible" for you is the most guaranteed way to live a life of mediocrity. But, if you're honest with yourself, and look deep inside your soul, you'll remember that you were destined for something much greater. I promise you, you're never too old, or too young, to start. You are never lacking the resources to make your dreams come true. Yet, you may be lacking something else. And that's what today's show is about. On this episode we have on gold-medal winning Olympian Jackie Joyner-Kersee. Not only was Jackie voted by Sports Illustrated (and many other publications) to be the greatest female athlete of the 20th century, but she helped shift the minds of an entire generation by the way she did it. Jackie is, in many ways, the epitome of breaking through what seems to be possible or reasonable. Her story, as you'll learn, is ripe with difficulties, poor conditions, and often insurmountable odds. To learn the insights from someone like Jackie is truly priceless, and a gift for us all. You're about to learn how she was able to breakthrough and tap into her potential, and (more importantly) how you'll be able to do the same thing. In this episode you'll discover: How one of the greatest athletes in history responded to finishing dead last in her early competitions. Why having a good mentor doesn't mean having someone who will agree with you. Who inspired Jackie to excel and what drove her to attend UCLA. Why having a healthy confidence is important (but not going overboard). Why positive self-talk is critical to high levels of success. How you can learn valuable lessons from the failures in your life. Why you should always shoot for a goal BEYOND what you want. How to maintain your health and fitness as you progress in age. Why looking at exercise as a form of punishment (like many people do) is a huge barrier to success. A major reason people are not exercising regularly (we are calling people out!) Some of the surprising benefits of walking. Why resourcefulness is far more valuable than having certain resources. How storytelling can help to motivate and transform the lives of so many people. Ep 97TMHS 097: A Day In The Life Of Shawn - Health, Work, Family, And Fat Loss
There is a wonderful quote that says, "People will judge you by your actions, not your intentions. You may have a heart of gold — but so does a hard-boiled egg." It's the things that we do, not our wishful thinking, that makes the biggest difference in the lives of those around us and the world at large. This motivated me to take you into my world and show you what I do, step-by-step, on a daily basis. In this powerful episode, I'll take you through my morning routine, my work week, and even a tour of how my exercise and nutrition are mapped out during the day. One of the biggest things you'll discover is that, for my work week, I do something called "chunking" to super-charge my focus, keep my energy high, and get more done in a day than most people get done in a week. To give you a quick example, there was a time when I would be working from 8am to 8 pm going from writing an important article, to seeing a few clients, to giving a presentation somewhere, to writing some more later in the day. All the while trying to maintain my nutrition and exercise habits. It was a stressful time to say the least. I constantly had to shift gears in my mind to be in an optimal place for many different things. I could do it. But I definitely could have done things better. Today, because I've made the decision to cut away a lot of the clutter and "chuck" my time into specific things on specific days, I'm able to "get in the zone" on a consistent, daily basis and accomplish much more than I ever have before. Time for work, creating, teaching, exercise, family time, and even my favorite activities are all done with ease and grace. You're about to learn how I do it, plus the powerful daily rituals I use to set the template for it all. In this episode you'll discover: How creating certain habits can make it difficult to get out of shape. Why habits generally have a negative connotation. What time I start my day (and how it relates to my kids and being of service to the world). Why it's important to take an "inner bath" each morning. When to take your probiotics (the best time of day and why). How to ensure that you're regularly eliminating wastes from your body. Why meditation is so valuable. What my meditation practice consists of. Why so many people struggle to breathe properly and simple breathing exercises you can use. How your facial expression can change your mood. The real value that visualization has on your life. Why exercising in the morning can help you sleep better at night. What the benefits of contrast showers are (this is super valuable!) What the best breakfast for fat loss and energy is. Why "sleeping in" can cause problems with your energy and motivation. How to optimize things with your pre- and post-workout nutrition. Ep 96TMHS 096: Fasting, Feasting, And The Wild Diet - With Abel James
All diets are not created equal. Every day, billions of people all over the world are partaking in one form of diet or another. Many out of conscious effort. Many out of necessity. No matter what your particular diet beliefs are, there are some specific tenets that are now well known to contribute to the health and function of the human body. If food and diet were as simple as getting certain vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, and other nutrients, then someone would have come up with an effective pill for that a long time ago. But that's not the real story of diet and food. Food is something far beyond the nutrients (or lack thereof) that you are getting from it. Real food, itself, is a source of infinite intelligence that knows how to interact with the human body in a way that no pill never can. Even deeper, food is about family, food is about emotion, food is about relationships, foods is about social acceptance. If you want to know the real value of diet and food, then Abel James is the man to talk to. On today's episode we are going to dive into the misconceptions surrounding diets, and hone in on what is truly important. We are going to uncover what The Wild Diet really is, and why it's important to have at least a portion of your own daily diet be on the wild side. In this episode you'll discover: What immunomodulators are (and why you need them). How healthy, thin people are able to feast and not get fat (keyword is healthy!) A quick, easy win almost anyone can achieve at breakfast time. How fasting impacts your metabolism (this might shock you!) Why health and nutrition is actually a lot easier than people think. What sneaky marketing tactics food companies use to promote foods as "healthy" (I guarantee you've been a victim of this.) How to create your dinner plate using The Wild Diet principles. Why plant foods are so very important in your diet. Simple tips to ensure you're eating healthier food more often. How food impacts us on a deeper level (emotionally, mentally, spiritually - with science to back it up!) Ep 95TMHS 095: Lose The Wheat, Lose The Weight - Wheat Belly With Dr. William Davis
How can something so soft, so comforting, and so unsuspecting be the cause of many of the health problems running rampant in our society today? And if our ancestors ate bread, and built civilizations on it without consequence, then how can it be bad for us now? All of these questions and more are about to be answered in this interview with the author of the #1 New York Times Bestselling book Wheat Belly, Dr. William Davis. Wheat, though a staple in our modern life, has grown in use and variation without assumption. Wheat has gone "Hollywood" and expanded out from the bread game into thousands of cereals, every baked good imaginable (I was a fan of Wheat's appearance in the Hostess Ding Dong myself), and countless other items have featured wheat in a supporting roll (like medications, beauty products, and even supplements, just to name a few). Truly, wheat is everywhere. So, when did wheat begin showing signs that its ego got too big and it was now causing massive harm? Well, the research dates as far back as 10,000 years when the birthing of agriculture took hold. Humans began staying in one place, monocropping (mainly wheat), and genetic manipulation of wheat first peeks out its lightly toasted face. With this shift to monocropping and agriculture came startling evidence in human remains. More degenerative bone diseases, a smaller physical stature, as well as evidence of other chronic illnesses like cancer were on the rise. Now, things were still not nearly as volatile as today because whole foods were still the basis of the diet. Unlike the heavily processed frankenfoods of today. You wouldn't have seen a Cinnabon, a box of Frosted Mini-Wheats, or a double-stuffed crust deep dish pizza anywhere in sight. Wheat has gone from a bit of a problem, to a flat out flagrant food pyramid bully. You're going to be shocked when you find out just how wheat is contributing to weight gain, hormone problems, and even autoimmune diseases. Today you're going to learn important information that will likely change your life forever. Time to find out how to rise above the Wheat Belly, supercharge your energy, and live a longer, healthier life. In this episode you'll discover: What the #1 antioxidant food is (by a long shot!) How healthcare has turned diseases into profit and procedure opportunities. What originally compelled Dr. William Davis to pull wheat out of his patient's diets. How a non-celiac patient completed cured her ulcerative colitis by following Dr. Davis' advice. What type of relationship you should have with your doctor (this is critical!) How high blood sugar can lead to a myriad of diseases. How a protein found in wheat called gliadin can lead to autoimmune diseases. What compounds found in wheat amplify your appetite and cause you to overeat. How wheat germ agglutinin can block the function of your satiety hormone leptin. Where the term obesogens come from (the perfect foods to make you fat). Why wheat can make you store fat faster than pure table sugar (this is shocking!) Why learned helplessness can prevent you from losing weight no matter what you do. How modern day wheat has been mutated (this is NOT what your ancestors ate!) How wheat helps create extremely inflammatory visceral fat. Why wheat and related grains can lead to estrogen-related health problems (from fibroid tumors to man-boobs). Why kicking the wheat habit can lead to drug-like withdrawal symptoms. How you can quickly reverse health issues by following a few simple Wheat Belly tips. How gluten-free foods can make you just as fat and unhealthy as their gluten containing big brothers. Why 90 percent of the population is experiencing gut damage from wheat and don't even know it. Ep 94TMHS 094: Sugar Addiction, Estrogen Dominance, And The Hormone Reset Diet - With Dr. Sara Gottfried
A statement that Dr. Sara Gottfried made at the end of this episode sent powerful chills right down my spine. She spoke to the powerful truth about a women's work on this planet, and how important it is to get your body in balance. When you hear this statement, you will know it. Leading up to that, we have one of the most valuable shows yet, with tips and insights about estrogen dominance (in men and women), sugar addiction, and how your gut microbiome is determining whether you are fit or fat. She concentrates everything down into a way that makes sense. It's easy, doable, and (most importantly) it's backed by hardcore science. She's not tossing out ideas that may or may not work. To get the body and health you want, it's critical that you learn to exercise smarter and not just harder. In our society of over-indulgence, we can latch on to the idea that if a little running is good, then running a half marathon a day must be better. Nothing could be further from the truth. What it boils down to is beginning with the end in mind. What are your real, desired goals? What is the end result that you really want? Ep 91THMS 091: Conquering Diabesity - Natural Solutions For Diabetes And The Obesity Epidemic
A new term has been coined to demonstrate the parallel line between diabetes and obesity. Diabesity is the realization that diabetes and obesity go together like peanut butter and jelly, like spaghetti and meatballs, or like Doritos and chili cheese dogs (if you grew up like I did). The real underlying issue is that obesity and being dangerously overweight has become a societal norm. You will be shocked and a little disturbed when you find out what the statistics are today. But, more so, you're going to be driven like never before to not have your name listed in the ranks of people who are stricken with diabesity. This condition has become a societal norm because, as Dr. Francine Kaufman says, "Our ancient genes and our modern environment have collided." You can not go more than a couple miles in this country and not see a chain of fast food restaurants, we are bombarded by chemicals in our food, water, and air supply, and we are more overworked and under-rested than at any other point in human history. What we are seeing now is a result of our collective decisions, but this can all change starting now. Today you're going to learn the ins and outs of how diabetes is created, how it's reversed, and how to prevent it from happening in the first place. You're also going to learn EXACTLY how body fat gets created in a way that you've never heard before. In particular, we're going to focus on that especially troublesome fat that accumulates in the midsection, so that you can finally take control of the Battle of the Bulge. Plus, a little bonus with today's episode. To celebrate surpassing over 1 million downloads, I'm giving away several gift packs of Onnit foods and supplements. All you have to do to enter yourself is 1) Follow me on Instagram right here and 2) Tag me in a photo of where you're listening to the show. I'll be selecting a few winners all this week! We've got so many powerful and exciting episodes coming up for you. It kicks off today with this masterclass on reversing diabetes, eradicating obesity, and taking back control of your health. In this episode you'll discover: What diabesity is and where it originated. What the symptoms of diabesity are (you can look down now and see if you have it!) How the rates of diabetes have changed in the last 100+ years (this will shock you!) What blood test you want to get when monitoring systemic inflammation and potential blood sugar problems. How diabetes is actually created (the step-by-step process - this is powerful!) What insulin really is and how it works. The specific tissues that are most responsive to insulin (this can mean life or death...) Why storing unwanted fat is actually a very healthy response of your body. The surprising impact that whole grains have on your blood sugar. How your amazing liver assists in managing healthy blood sugar levels. What the different types of body fat are and how they work. Why women and men store fat differently. How genetics relates to diabetes and obesity (the good, bad, and the ugly!) Why statin drugs increase diabetes risk. The 8 steps to completely reverse diabetes and obesity-related symptoms. What category of foods will help your leptin sensitivity and control your appetite. Why exercise can NEVER compete with your diet. How you can use exercise to treat diabetes (it's a compliment, not a cure!) What supplements are effective in treating diabetes naturally. How stress can lead to diabetes and what to do about it (you need to know this!) Why optimizing your sleep can help you successfully prevent and treat diabetes. Ep 90TMHS 090: Defeat Stress, Deepen Relationships, And Master Your Mindset - With Prince Ea
Benjamin Franklin made a powerful statement when he said, “There are three things extremely hard: steel, a diamond, and to know one’s self.” Consistent happiness, success, health, deeper relationships, and an empowered mindset are all predicated on your ability to know who you truly are and what you're about. Your success is going to be dependent on your ability to connect with the people and the world around you. But the question is, if you don't understand yourself, how can you expect to truly understand anyone else? Most of us have been programmed (by default) to pursue success somewhere outside of ourselves. We have lost sight of the fact that happiness and success is an inside game. Your ability to master your own mind and perception of reality is the key to seeing the results you want in the world around you. Here's the catch... Benjamin Franklin noted that this is not for the weakhearted. It can be very hard work. Yet, the rewards are bigger and better than anything you've ever imagined. So, whether you're all about the Benjamins or not, listen closely because you're about to get a first class ticket back to the most important person on the planet: Y-O-U. Today we have a very special episode with music artist and thought leader, Prince Ea. He has recently gained worldwide recognition for his powerful spoken word pieces highlighting how we can live with less stress, more happiness, and bigger overall success by following some basic principles that have been around for thousands of years. The way that he packages up and delivers the information are second to none. And what's more powerful is that it doesn't have to be as challenging as you may think to achieve the happiness and self-awareness that has eluded so many people over the centuries. It's never been a matter of "can you do it," it's really a matter of whether or not you have the right strategy in your hands. One idea, just one idea, can dramatically change the quality of your life. The only question is, do you have the heart to take action for yourself to make it happen? My guess is (if you've made it this far) the answer is a resounding yes! So, just click play, get ready, and let the transformation begin. In this episode you'll discover: How great historical figures like Lao Tzu and Buddha relate to hip-hop artist today. How life is actually qualifying you for the things you'll be faced with. It's pretty astonishing when you see the before and after picture of an individual who's had the resolve to lose 80, 90, or even 100+ pounds. It's truly an act that puts them in a fraction of a fraction of the population who's been able to accomplish a feat like that. If they accomplished this naturally (without the use of drugs and surgery), you will often find that these individuals carry a secret that many people never hear about. Sure, they've "worked off" a lot of pounds by the decisions they've made in the kitchen and in the gym, but there was something more profound at work. If you were able to talk with them before and after the weight loss, you'd find out very quickly that, yes, they look different - but they are literally not the same person. The way they talk is different, their perception about reality is different, the way they carry themselves and relate to the world is often totally different. They changed who they are; not just what they do. The real secret is: Weight loss must never be the intended target. Getting fixated on weight loss will often lead to a series of ups and downs, and a whole distaste for the idea of shedding pounds in the first place. So, what should the real focus be? If not obsessing over the numbers staring back at you on the scale, what should the intended target be so that you will actually arrive at the health and beauty you deserve? The intended target must be on becoming the type of person that you need to become to have the health and body that you really want. Health is not something you chase after in hopes that you will capture it one day. Health is something that you attract to yourself by the person that you become. This is where the real work is, because the scale will look you right in the face and not tell you the whole truth. Now, how do we do a show talking about a 180-pound weight loss when we don't want the focus to be on weight loss? Well, it's pretty easy when you have on a guy like Jimmy Moore. He's a humble leader (probably too humble to say that he's a leader), and someone who knows where the path of weight loss tactics and self-perception intercept. He's one of the most gifted people in compiling and sharing health-related information that I've ever met. But, he'll be fast to tell you that he's not perfect. He's accomplished astonishing feats of weight loss several times, and he's arrived at a place that's truly inspirational because he now knows that it's never been the most important thing. The most important thing is that you are happy. That you are happy, grateful, and proud of who you are right now. Only that can be a catalyst for long-term happiness and health. Even though you're going to learn some wonderful tactics for physical transformation today, what it's really about is having the audacity to take responsibility for your life. Only you have the power to change the course and direction of how your life unfolds. It begins by taking full and complete responsibility for your life, dropping the blame and excuses, and knowing that you have the power to change at any moment that you choose. In this episode you'll discover: How our health practices as an adult get programmed at a very young age. What controversial book helped Jimmy lose 180 pounds (unbelievable!!!) The truth about low-fat diets and the interesting side effects they have. Why dietary fat is so important. What ketosis is and how it happens. The big mistake that can happen on the Atkins' Diet that causes people to regain weight. How something called "gluconeogenesis" can stop you from becoming a fat-burner. Why you need to find your unique "carb tolerance" and "protein threshold". What type of carbs trigger fat storage. A secret about fat-soluble vitamins most people overlook. What types of "healthy fats" you should be eating. What type of olive oil you should NEVER use. The healthiest nuts that you may not know about. The most amazing tip about weight loss that I've ever heard (thank you Jimmy!) Ep 88TMHS 088: Simple Ways To Boost Your Happiness Hormones And The Food-Mood Connection - With Evan Brand
There's a wonderful old quote that says, "Don't put the key to your happiness in someone else's pocket." It's one of the grave mistakes we make as human beings to believe that it's up to someone else to make us happy - or that someone else even can for that matter. Our significant others, friends, and family members don't have some magical pixy dust that they sprinkle on us to make us feel some type of way. How we truly feel, how we experience the emotions of happiness, are due to our own biochemistry, and our own perception of reality. You see, when you feel good, that's you, your brain, and endocrine system releasing hormones and neurotransmitters that make you feel that way. No pixy dust. These are chemicals that YOU produced. Not to negate that our loved ones and the world around us can influence how we feel. It's absolutely true that they can. But, it's because we allow them to. It's your own innate perception that decides whether or not the people/conditions in your life will make you happy or otherwise. Your happiness, is, and always will be, depended on your perception. You can literally program your mind to think that every time it rains it's a joyous occasion. It's cause for celebration! Many ancient cultures have seen it that way. However, most of us unknowingly built a belief that the rain is slightly depressing, a hinderance, or even something we'd rather avoid all together. The truth is, there are no flowers without the rain. So, we can choose to see the good that the rain brings and instantly up our levels of happiness. Or, we can decide that the rain is a problem and your biochemistry will respond accordingly. Is it really that simple to experience more happiness by changing our perception? Well, yes and no. Most of our core beliefs are very hardwired into our nervous system and endocrine system. Your brain doesn't want you to "decide" how you feel about every-little-thing that shows up in your life. It wants to put as many things as it can on automatic so that it can free up space for something new. Your brain is always hungry to grow. This said, to change some of our more deeply ingrained beliefs, it takes practice, repetition, and/or a very emotionally charged event. These things help to create a new neuropathway, and weaken the old neuropathway that had become our default. This can take some work, but it simply starts with the awareness that you CAN change, that you CAN be happy, and that you CAN have more influence over your happiness if you make the decision to. There are several things that you can do to immediately shift how your brain is operating and boost your happiness hormones. Today we have special guest, Evan Brand, on to help us understand how this all works and to provide us with some great strategies for feeling more joy and happiness in our lives right away. We are also covering the food-mood connection, and how diet plays into this whole equation. So tune in, get focused, and let's have some fun! In this episode you'll discover: What a diagnosis of IBS really means and why conventional treatments often fail. Why the standard pre-game food for athletes needs to be changed. One of the major ways that your diet can affect your mood. How your attitude, stress, and mood inherently impact your food choices. How sharp increases in blood sugar lead to eating MORE sugar. What your overall "stress load" is and why it's important. Why having a great body will be unfulfilling without this secret ingredient. How human contact and intimacy can instantly boost your happiness hormones. Why humans have a limited ability to see energy and how that affects our interactions. What your "life wheel" is and how it can help identify imbalances in your life. How stress can actually be beneficial to you. Simple practices you can use to reframe stress and make it positive. What shinrin-yoku is and how it can transform your health. A cool trick to add beneficial essential oils into your family's daily life (thanks Jade!) How to super-charge your nervous system so that stress never breaks you down. Ep 86TMHS 086: How To Create A Sleep Sanctuary And Get The Best Sleep Ever
We spend approximately 1/3 of our entire lives in a bedroom. That's a long time to be anywhere... This is what makes your bedroom such a special place. And the environment in this room, whether you realize it or not, has a huge impact on your health and longevity. How can a room actually dictate your health? To put it simply, humans are a direct product of their environment. Our brains are constantly creating and strengthening neuro-associations to the places we are the most (i.e. your bedroom!). This helps to automate our behavior. So, basically your bedroom has you programmed like a robot. That's right, you're sort of like a robot. Not as cool as Terminator 2, but not as clunky as the robot from Short Circuit. In all seriousness, your brain has evolved constantly looking for ways to automate things to free up mental energy. Your bedroom setup will inherently influence your behavior, and if great sleep is a behavior you want to take part in, then listen to this closely. There are certain things you're about to learn that turn the average person's bedroom into a danger zone. The surface experience may be that they're waking up tired each day (how ironic is that to wake up tired?!). But the deeper issues that a dangerous bedroom set up can bring are diabetes, cancer, birth defects, or even SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) and I've got the science to prove it. The good news is, you're also about to learn how to create your very own sleep sanctuary that invigorates your health, adds to your vitality, and helps you to get the best sleep ever. This is because humans aren't just products of our environment, we are also creators of our environment. And with a few simple tweaks you'll be getting the best sleep of your life every night. In this episode you'll discover: How our brains are always trying to automate things. Why humans actually have 3 different brains. What hidden hazards in your bedroom could be causing you hormone problems. The shocking connection between Wi-Fi and autism. The #1 item in most bedrooms that can dramatically depress your sex life. What "light pollution" is and how it affects you. What the ideal room temperature is for the best sleep. How the air quality in your bedroom can become "stagnant". What chemicals are used in the production of your mattress (this is shocking!) How your mattress is impacting the health of your spine. What the #1 wellness mattress is. What the leading cause of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) is. 7 tips to create your own sleep sanctuary. How a simple houseplant can improve your bedroom air quality (NASA proven!) Ep 83TMHS 083: Mastering Your Body And Spreading Positivity Through Movement - With Travis Brewer
The word ninja was once used to designate someone highly trained in martial arts (masked, deadly, and absolutely nothing to do with mutant turtles). Currently, if you look up the definition of ninja, you'll see that it's used in a slightly different way. A ninja in our world today is defined as a person who excels in a particular skill or activity. You can be a ninja at cooking desserts, a ninja at dancing, a ninja at videos games, and the list goes on and on. It's just about having the audacity to develop the skills necessary to be great. That's why I'm here to tell you that you, yes YOU, have the capacity to be an %$#-kicking ninja! What better way to become a ninja than actually learning from a ninja yourself? My guest today is someone who has excelled in numerous skills, and has been able to transform this mastery into many areas of his life as a result. He was actually a semi-finalist on the television show American Ninja Warrior that highlights some of the most elite all-around athletes in the world. And this all happened after he was faced with a devastating injury and thought that his athletic career was over. This episode is not only about becoming the best version of yourself, it's also about overcoming adversity, and utilizing your body in ways that help to empower your mind and emotions. The truth is, we are all capable of so much more than we are achieving right now, but what holds us back are the mental barriers we've put up for ourselves. It's the lack of belief, lack of motivation, and lack of perseverance that usually tell the story of how much we can achieve. But, no more!!! Today we take the necessary steps to learn how to gain more mastery over our bodies so that we can translate that over into more mastery in the other areas of our lives. You see, when you are able to overcome physical obstacles you thought were difficult (if not impossible!) that immediately expands your threshold for what you can overcome in your relationships, finances, career, and more. Gaining more physical health and strength are so important because your body is the vehicle that you move through this life in. If you achieve, create, or experience anything, it's through the amazing body that you have. It's truly a special and sacred relationship. Right now you're about to learn from Travis Brewer, a true ninja warrior himself, on how to become stronger in your body, overcome any obstacle you're faced with, plus a whole lot more. In this episode you'll discover: One of the most potent things you can do when others get sick around you. What type of sugars have incredible healing properties. How a tragedy or physical injury can close one door but open many more. Why you must NEVER STOP TRAINING (so you are ready for when your moment comes). Why learning how to be strong in your body will make you strong mentally and spiritually as well. How keeping a positive mental attitude will help you in your progression. How overcoming physical obstacles translates to overcoming obstacles in our lives. Why children are more open and excited to try new things. Why technique really matters (in sport and in life). 5 essential exercises you can do to gain more control and ability with your body. The best progression exercises to help you do impressive pull-ups! What partner training is and how it can help you improve faster. How to develop powerful pressing ability for push ups and handstands. What the #1 core exercise is (and several variations for it!) What interesting things you can do to improve your grip strength. How to enable yourself to do single-leg squats (aka pistol squats). What the 4 keys are for achieving anything (Travis' 4 P's!) One thing is for certain: you will fall in love in this lifetime. You will be head over heels, you will sacrifice anything, and you will see a beauty that words can't describe. For many of us, we will fall in love many times... But the question is, will you ever fall in love with the most important person of all? Our society has been programmed to think that we are all incomplete. We need a love story with Tom Cruise and Rene Zellwegger to remind us how incomplete we are, and if we just find that special person it'll be alright. The truth is, you always have been, and always will be, the answer you've always needed. You are complete unto yourself. You have a level of perfection that no one else can achieve... because you are a totally unique phenomenon. You deserve to be loved deeply by the most important person of all. --> YOU. Can you do that? Can you honestly say that you love yourself as much as you truly deserve? If not, then this may be one of the most important moments in your life. Today we have on Holistic Health Coach Madelyn Moon. She's a friend and someone I truly admire for her courage to say enough is enough! She has been a high performing fitness competitor and has seen how you can easily lose track of what matters most. She's dieted in a stricter fashion than most people will ever know, all in the name of health. But she found out at the end of the day that it was just a long, painful road to unhappiness. She reassessed things, developed some powerful transformational insights, and now is a shining example of what health can be (in our own unique way). If you live for the love of dieting, exercising, and competing, this in no way makes you wrong. Let's celebrate what we all love, and make sure that we are giving healthy love and respect for ourselves no matter what path we choose. Madelyn has some game-changing information for you today. Ep 81TMHS 081: Tips For Dining Out At Restaurants, Family Get Togethers, And How To Stay Healthy During The Holidays
The word 'restaurant' is derived from the French word restaurer which means to restore. It was originally used in France in the 16th century to describe a thick, inexpensive soup sold by street vendors that were storied to restore your health. Fast forward to today... The word restaurant now means that I'm probably going to end up bloated and questioning why I ate so much. Most of the restaurants in the U.S. are geared towards having a party in your mouth by any means necessary. If that means extra sugar, so be it! Extra trans fats and rancid oils, bring it on! Little bits of nutrition, but big chunks of chemicals, additives, and preservatives, let's go! They want your business, which is fine, but the way they go about doing it is far from the concern of restoring your health. Is this all restaurants? Of course not, but until the recent wave of more health conscious cooking, most restaurants were operating in the nutritional dark ages. Fortunately, today we have access to so many amazing restaurants and various food options. Today's episode is going to help you navigate the world of restaurant dining so that you can go out to eat, have a good time, and feel like fit, sexy beast when you leave there. Speaking of navigating, holiday get togethers can be one of the roughest health terrains to maneuver. Making it through the holidays without packing on the extra pounds would be like seeing a double rainbow, buying a winning lottery ticket, or seeing Flava Flav win Dancing with the Stars. Hey, anything can happen, but it's not very likely! So what do we do when the holiday pies are stacked against us? You're actually going to be surprised at how easy this is if you have the right strategies in your hands. You are going to be able to enjoy the holiday, eat the amazing foods that you love, and still come out looking great at the end. In this episode you'll discover: Why chocolate is actually one of the healthiest foods you can find. 8 healthy tips for dining out at restaurants. What new shift has taken place with restaurants all over the country. How to use the "Pick 3" strategy to eat healthily at restaurants. What beverage mistake can cause you to store more fat during your meal. Why you need to focus on hormones more than calorie consumption. Whether you should or shouldn't consume beverages with your meals. What the best appetizer at a restaurants is. What hormone will help you to feel more satiated during your meal. How to INSTANTLY upgrade the quality of your meals (keep some of these with you!) What digestive supplement I keep with me at all times. The best strategy for dealing with desserts when dining out. Ep 80TMHS 080: Protect Your Sex Hormones! 10 Ways To Boost Testosterone Naturally (Essentials For Men's AND Women's Health)
Experts call it “estrogen pollution”. We are living in an era where we are bombarded with estrogenic compounds, and the health effects are extremely disturbing. This is a problem for all of us. Both men and women have estrogen receptors. These receptors are present throughout our entire bodies, from our brains to our reproductive organs. If your body is in balance, then you are producing the correct amount of estrogen endogenously (within yourself) and it’s fitting nice and snug into those receptor sites and life is good. The problem is, our exposure to xenoestrogens (foreign estrogens from outside of yourself) are at an all-time high today. These xenoestrogens can fit right into the receptor sites for estrogen in your body and “turn on” programs that more estrogen will encourage. For men this could mean lowered sex drive, accumulation of fat on the butt and hips, gynecomastia (man-boobs), shrinking of the reproductive organs, and many other red alerts. For women this could lead to estrogen dominance which encourages cancers of the breasts, ovaries, and other reproductive organs, fibroid tumors, depression, decreased sex drive, and very difficult to get-rid-of body fat. How is all of this possible with just one hormone being off? Well, it’s because your hormones control EVERYTHING about your physiology and how every cell in your body communicates with each other. It’s a pretty important role, and if just one set of hormones is off, then every other hormone will be out-of-sync accordingly. In steps testosterone. Testosterone is commonly known as the “male hormone”, but that description is far too general. Every human being on the planet is dependent upon the proper function of testosterone. Yes, women have a lower percentage of testosterone than men, but it’s critical for many of the essential processes in a woman’s life. You’re going to learn about all of them today. To help yourself be the strongest, fittest, healthiest, happiest person you can possibly be, then you’ve got to understand the role of testosterone and how to avoid exposure to the xenoestrogens we’re subjected to in our world today. Today you’re going to learn how to boost testosterone naturally, protect yourself from dysfunctions with your sex hormones, and a whole lot more. In this episode you’ll discover: Why there’s a “testosterone crisis” today. Where testosterone is produced in the body (male vs. female). How testosterone impacts a developing fetus (this is incredible!) What testosterone is responsible for in your body. How your sex hormones impact your personality. How testosterone actually gets created in your body. What Leydig Cells are and why they’re important. The dangerous (and scary) side effects of having low testosterone. Common things that can lower your testosterone levels. How a vasectomy can impact testosterone levels. The shocking relationship between cholesterol and your sex hormones. How aromatization can steal your precious testosterone. 5 supplements that can block aromatization. Why dietary fat is critical to testosterone production (and your overall health). How bottled water could be increasing your estrogen levels. What foods and food additives can disrupt your sex hormones. 8 natural testosterone boosting supplements (this is a must know info!) How selenium can improve hormone function and protect against cancer. 10 ways to naturally boost your testosterone! What form of exercise is proven to boost your testosterone level. Whether or not sex will raise or lower your testosterone (in men and women). How to boost your testosterone by 20% in just two minutes (do this now!) Ep 79TMHS 079: How To Get Your Body Organized, Eliminate Pain, And Be Ready To Run - With Dr. Kelly Starrett
One of the biggest mistakes in conventional medicine has been the disconnection between psychology and movement. The health of your brain, nervous system, and endocrine system are all intimately tied to your ability to move. A lack of natural movement creates stagnation in your mental, physical, and emotional health. But, what is natural movement anyway? And what are the things that are hindering our ability to move naturally? Well, get ready, because Dr. Kelly Starrett is here to dissect these things for you and give you clear, comprehensive strategies to be the most healthy, functional person you can possibly be. It's been said that if you're the smartest guy in the room then you need to find another room (in order to keep elevating yourself). Well, Kelly is running out of rooms to be in because he is often the smartest guy in the building. His humble and cool demeanor wouldn't tell you that. Yet, it becomes pretty clear after talking with Kelly for a while that he can see and understand things about the human body that few people can match. Kelly is a brilliant thinker that can literally see the faults in your physical mechanics and foresee future injuries before you're ever diagnosed with anything. I'm talking about near superpowers here. But, what makes Kelly Starrett such an amazing teacher and coach is the fact that he can break things down to a real world level for you. What are one or two daily practices that can get you out of pain, or better yet, avoid it from happening in the first place? What are the major flaws in our modern lifestyle that are wreaking havoc on our mobility? How can we "reorganize" our bodies to feel good during sport, leisure, and even while traveling? You're about to gain access to this knowledge, plus a whole lot more right now! In this episode you'll discover: Why we don't have the "owner's manual" for our own bodies. How making even small corrections in your lifestyle can up-regulate your health. Why sitting is a skill you need to learn. How many additional calories you can burn by standing more. What being on your smart phone can do to your posture. The shocking impact that standing desks can have on children's health. Why practice does NOT make perfect (you'd better mind your myelination!) Why failing to recognize the connection between your psychology and movement is a huge mistake. Why you MUST learn how to do a resting squat. The #1 reason that people end up in nursing homes. Why Kelly and I are in love with the VariDesk. How to instantly reset your pelvic position and stabilize your spine. How writing a book can be hazardous to your health (funny, but true!) What poor sleep quality can do to your immune system. How to "uncompromise" yourself after being on a long flight. Why you'll want to start "gut smashing" (especially before bed). How shoes can cause problems with running mechanics. Why you need to learn how to run even if you never plan on running. Ep 78TMHS 078: How Taboos Control Your Life: Your Teeth, Your Clothes, Your Sexual Desires & More - With Daniel Vitalis
It's even taboo to talk about taboos. Even though we may not realize it, our social taboos are able to keep us imprisoned within our own minds. Don't you want to know what invisible forces are governing the way you think, feel, and function on a daily basis? Don't you want to know why you do what you do? Well, even if you did, it's very difficult to find out what they are because they are usually a "blind spot" in our consciousness. I'm not talking about science fiction, and Neo waking up from a dream within The Matrix. I'm talking about science fact, and how our perception of reality is largely governed by beliefs that we never got to choose ourselves. Could your faulty beliefs be causing you to struggle and fail repeatedly in your life? This is where a teacher like Daniel Vitalis come in... He can instantly redirect your focus to help you see the things in your life that are hiding in plain sight. I often say that our relationships are the #1 most influential factor on our health and happiness. Why this episode is so valuable is that we often carry a lot of guilt, shame, and fear surrounding our relationships and don't really know why. Most of us want to have happy, healthy relationships in our lives, but we tend to find many creative ways of screwing them up. We self-sabotage and don't know why. We stay in the wrong relationships and don't know why. We look for problems when they're not there, and we often feel that we are inadequate or that something is "wrong" with us. I'm sorry, but chances are, there is nothing wrong with you. You are a wildly amazing human being, with many gifts, talents, capacities, and complexities that make you uniquely you. The perfect you that you are. Today we're going to break open a can of whoop a$% on taboos so that we can be free of the guilt, shame, and fear that may be holding you back from health and happiness. In this episode you'll discover: Why being optimistic isn't necessarily natural for humans. What taboos actually are (and how they make us want things more). How taboos function in our psyche. What the the Intrinsic Taboo is (you need to know this!) How many "wild human" tribes are left in the world (and what advantages they have over us). How cavities in teeth are related to osteoporosis. What Dr. Weston A. Price discovered about the dental health of indigenous peoples. Why our cravings for sugar are natural (I don't mean for Oreo cookies though!) How the clothes you wear affect the health of your teeth (crazy, but true!) Why artificial light is damaging our sleep cycles. What some of our programmed fears about being naked are. How guilt and shame have been so heavily connected to sex. What "mating strategies" can be observed in humans. What the different types of monogamy are. What mate guarding is and why we have a relationship tension within us. How the media uses sex to stimulate the strongest drive in us. Ep 77TMHS 077: Our Roots. Our Planet. Our Future. ~The Origins Movie With Dr. Pedram Shojai
It's pretty clear that we have changed. Only a few generations ago, chronic illnesses like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes were seen in only a small percentage of the population. Today, some statistics show that more than three-fourths of the western world are afflicted with one of these major illnesses. The question is... How did this happen? We are so much more advanced in our technology, but, collectively, we are in the Stone Age when it comes to the health and vitality of our bodies. As a matter of fact, our Stone Age ancestors had this dialed in better than we do. Images of Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble do not give our origins justice... I'm pretty sure no one has ever eaten a brontosaurus burger, but I've seen plenty of people eat Double Whoppers. In the new movie Origins, we get the inside look at how we lost touch with our natural state of well-being. We finally get an explanation of what happened, and how we ended up entrenched in disease. But, more importantly, we get a map on how to get back to our roots, and experience vitality NOW and well into our future. Dr. Pedram Shojai, OMD, has put together a cutting-edge film that's visually stunning, and energizing for your mind, body, and spirit. Whether you are just getting started on your health journey, or you are a health and fitness veteran, this movie is going to add something to your life. Gain free access to the entire film for free below after hearing this exclusive interview with the groundbreaking heath pioneer himself. Enjoy both, and, as always, your feedback and insights are welcome! In this episode you'll discover: What the driving force behind the new hit movie Origins was. The shocking amount of new chemicals that are introduced into our environment each day. Where synthetic chemicals get stored in your body. What your mitochondria actually are (this will surprise you!) What happens with the health of our communities every time you swipe your credit card. How your energy levels impact symptoms of depression. How mediation works to influence impulse control (are you going to eat that pie, or not?) Why you need to "upgrade" your ingredients and really, really enjoy your food. Where the big fear of germs began (and how we've taken it too far). Why common pesticide-based farming can create nutrient-deficient food. Ep 76TMHS 076: Natural Treatments For Depression - Share This With Everyone You Know!
It may be jarring to know that seven out of 10 people in the U.S. have been prescribed a drug over the past year. It may be more surprising to know that one out of every 10 people are now taking an antidepressant; among women in their 40's and 50's, that number is one in four. The rates of depression have skyrocketed over the last two decades, and the trend is steadily rising. Many experts believe that this is due to a myriad of reasons, but the go-to treatment for practitioners thus far have been SSRIs and other antidepressant drugs. Though depression is a very real and substantial issue, more and more data is coming forth that physicians are moving too quickly to medication. A study published in the journal Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics found that nearly two-thirds of the patients who had been given a diagnosis of depression within the previous 12 months did not meet the criteria for clinical depression as described by the psychiatrists’ bible. The lead author of the study, Dr. Ramin Mojtabai, said that, "The vast majority of individuals diagnosed with depression, rightly or wrongly, were given medication... It’s not only that physicians are prescribing more, the population is demanding more." People are in pain—physical, mental, and emotional—and they want a way out. The public at large has only been able to relate depression relief to medications because that's primarily what's been marketed to us. As a society, we haven’t had the opportunity to learn about all the other, far more effective and far safer, options to reverse depression. But that’s all going to change today. In this episode you'll discover: What the shocking statistics for depression are (this is jaw-dropping!) What depression is (and what it affects). How depression impacts other diseases and increases mortality rates. How depression coincides with suicide rates. Why antidepressant drugs are largely ineffective. How prescription antidepressant drugs influence your hormones. What SSRIs are and what their potential side effects are. The shocking relationship between eating fast food and being depressed. Where the majority of your body's serotonin is produced. Why the food you eat can radically shift your serotonin production. What studies are now showing about gluten containing foods and depression. How poor liver function can lead to depression. Why supplementing with vitamin C can reverse depression (and what the best sources are). What incredible supplement can help with dopamine-related depression. The surprising link between omega-3 fatty acids and depression. What ratio of omega-3's to omega-6's you really need. Where to find the best sources of essential fatty acids. 4 foods that combat depression and boost feel-good hormones. Where to find excellent food sources of tryptophan (the precursor to serotonin). Why exercise actually out-performs SSRIs in clinical studies. How vitamin D functions as an antidepressant. Why sleep deprivation and depression are intimately related. How the perception of your life's events work to create your feelings. Why depression is actually valuable, and questions to uncover how depression is helping you. Ep 75TMHS 075: Fitness Confidential - With America's Angriest Trainer Vinnie Tortorich #NSNG
Since its inception, the movie industry has heavily influenced the behavior of our culture. Most notably, Hollywood is unmatched at setting the bar for how we strive towards our health and fitness goals. What guy wouldn't want to swipe the look of Hugh Jackman in X-Men: Days of Future Past? (Minus the bushy sideburns, of course). Chris Evans, Jason Statham, Brad Pitt, and Mark Wahlberg are some notable names that have guys around the world rushing to the gym after a new movie comes out. For the ladies, Jennifer Lopez, Halle Berry, Jennifer Aniston, Jessica Biel and many others have inspired women to take their health and fitness more seriously. The interesting thing is that these Hollywood figures, who most people have never actually met, are far more influential than any family member who's preaching to you to get in shape. Hollywood motivates us. It is what it is. Now, this has given birth to the concept of the "Celebrity Trainer". The individual trusted with the responsibility to bring out the physical best of the people who we all aspire to be like. Considering that it's accomplished in a health-giving manner (there are probably more PEDs in Hollywood than in professional sports fyi) these celebrity trainers are often the cream of the crop, and known for getting great results. That's where Vinnie Tortorich comes in... Vinnie has been a Celebrity Trainer since before the title became en vogue. He's gotten to where he is, funny enough, by caring more than most other people. He cares about his clients, he cares about doing good work, and he cares about the public at large getting honest information that really works. Today you'll get to learn directly from Vinnie in this fun interview about Fitness Confidential, NSNG, endurance sports, and a whole lot more. In this episode you'll discover: What the #1 key to becoming a celebrity trainer really is. How working for free could put you on the fast track to enormous success and notoriety. The secret behind the outrage of "America's Angriest Trainer". What NSNG is and why it works for health and weight loss. Why sugar causes you to eat more sugar. Why diets have a negative association and create separation between people. What endurance athletes are doing to become "fat adapted". How to use sugar strategically when you "go hard" in endurance events. What foods to eat and what foods to avoid to make your body start using fat for fuel. What the keto flu is and how to reduce its impact. Why most multivitamins don't work well (and are actually potentially dangerous). Ep 74TMHS 074: 5 Tips To Overcome Any Obstacle You're Faced With - Get Better Health, Finances, Relationships, And More!
True wisdom is learning to become friendly with obstacles. Challenges, problems, and unexpected obstacles are all inherent in the development of a human being. We can choose to tussle with them a bit, complain about them constantly, or we can find a way to break through them. Consistently looking for the challenge, and knowing that you have everything you need within you to overcome it, is part of long-term happiness and fulfillment. The reality is that many people retreat when they are faced with challenges they think are beyond them. Tail between the legs, white flag; the whole nine yards to show they have given up. We have to come to a conclusion at some point that the challenges in our lives aren’t there to break us, they are actually there to develop us in ways that we never knew were possible before. You have gifts, talents, capacities, skills, ideas, and so much more that are dormant within you unless you have the right stimulus to bring them out. Why come up with an idea to improve the quality of your life if everything is all comfy and cozy? That idea wouldn’t be needed… It needs a spark. And that spark usually shows up dressed in obstacle pants. Hey, do these new obstacle pants make me look fat? Don’t answer that… On today’s show you’re going to get a high-powered degree on overcoming obstacles and challenges that show up in your life. With what you learn today, you’ll be better prepared to create unstoppable health, abundant finances, and powerful relationships for many years to come. In this episode you’ll discover: What the “invisible barrier” is and how it can block our progress. Why chewing your food is so important to digestion (even liquids!) What 6 missing resources we often attribute to our failures. Six powerful stories that demonstrate the do’s and don’ts of overcoming obstacles in life. Why creativity is crucial to solving most problems. How resourcefulness can be used in place of resources to achieve your goals. Why we need to learn to put ourselves first (and why it’s the least selfish thing you can do!) What learned helplessness is and how to break out of it. Why humans are actually hard-wired to look for problems. How knowing “why” something works can anchor it into your life. The 2 ways that we can condition our brains to make lasting change. 5 tips to overcome any obstacle you’re faced with. What habits actually are (this is powerful!) There's a Slovakian proverb that says, "Pure water is the world’s first and foremost medicine." Water is at the very basis of human health and longevity. Far more valuable than food, going without adequate hydration sets in motion a ticking time bomb of physical depression and symptoms of disease. You may be shocked to find that water has been clinically documented to improve everything from diabetes, to high blood pressure, to arthritis pain, and everything in between. But how can water be this effective? It's just... well, water, isn't it? Today you're going to learn the truth about the significant impact that water has on your health. Ep 72TMHS 072: The Truth About Birth Control, Balancing Stress, And The Hormone Cure - With Dr. Sara Gottfried
Hormones are everywhere. They are in and around us. They give us life. They generate communication between every cell in our body. They are essential in creating order... and they can also create some pretty epic chaos if we're not careful. Much like a misinterpreted communication between people, abnormal hormone function can cause your body to "fight" within itself. Now, I don't know about you, but I subscribe to a low drama diet, and I'd much rather have a civil environment within my body. I don't want hormonal back-slaps happening. I want to feel good. I want to feel empowered and healthy, and understanding the role of hormones is the ultimate key to having this manifest in my life. So the question is: How do hormones get out of balance, and what are the things we need to know to get them back on track? There is no better person on the planet to answer these questions than Dr. Sara Gottfried. This brilliant Harvard/MIT-trained physician is a superstar when it comes to helping you identify your hormonal issues and helping you create a strategy to fix them. What really impresses me about Dr. Gottfried is the wide range of options that she brings to the table. No cookie-cutter hormone tricks here. She knows well that we all have cookies of many different shapes and sizes :) As a matter of fact, the shape and size of our own cookie can change from time-to-time. One day we can be a nice gluten-free angel shaped cookie, and the next day we can be a full-on monster cookie with green frosting and extra gluten sprinkled on top. Helping you to navigate this hormonal terrain is what her work is all about. You're about to uncover just how powerful hormones are, and how to stack the conditions in your favor to have the health you really deserve. In this episode she says some absolutely profound things that will likely stay with you for the rest of your life. The amazing part about it is that she makes it simple. She doesn't over complicate things to sound like a genius (although she is), instead she breaks things down to the real world level that we all live in, and provides solutions that we can all apply to live a healthier, happier life. This show is loaded with powerful gems, so I recommend you take good notes, or after listening you can grab the free transcript right here and highlight your favorite parts. Now, let's get to it. Viva la hormones! In this episode you'll discover: How The Hormone Cure was created out of Sara's own quiet desperation (that so many women are going through). What hormones are and what they do in your body. How hormones impact calories. What 3 hormones determine women's health and men's health the most. What parts of your brain influence your production of cortisol. How we can manufacture stress even when we're not in danger. Why high cortisol production comes at the expense of other important hormones. How to identify some of the key symptoms of cortisol and thyroid problems. The shocking percentage of people with estrogen dominance and what it causes. Why having a hormone panel done is not always the best method for diagnosis. What incredible resource you can use to uncover hormone imbalances. What effective supplement for reducing high cortisol you can find at most health food stores. How to naturally reverse depression by utilizing the "girlfriend" factor. How your sleep impacts your hormones (and why you might be "tired and wired"). Why you need to fill your thyroid "nutrient gaps". How to safely detoxify your thyroid and other organs. How sex influences symptoms of estrogen dominance. What 2 powerful supplements can help to reverse estrogen dominance. What circadian congruence is and why it's critical for your health. Ep 71TMHS 071: How To Grow Stronger From Stress, Live More Fulfilled, And Do Work That You Love - With Pat Flynn
The work you do for a living matters. It matters to your health, it matters to your relationships, and it matters to your overall success. The work you choose to do each day is not something to take lightly. Sometimes life can sweep us up, and we end up spending our days doing things that we don't enjoy. We all know that sometimes we've got to "do what we've got to do", but when does doing what we've got to do actually come to an end? Research shows that poor job satisfaction and high work stress elevates your risk of depression, heart disease, obesity, and even early death. As crazy as it may sound, the data shows that disliking your job can actually kill you (take that job! Oh wait, I'm the one who dies...), so wouldn't now be a good time to do something about it? Whether you are doing work you enjoy, but feeling trapped by it, or not yet doing work you love, and looking to make a change, this episode is going to be eye opening for you. Today you'll get to learn from the brilliant man behind the brand Smart Passive Income (or SPI for all the cool people :)). Pat Flynn is an incredible teacher, with an incredible story, and has an incredible amount of resources to share with you. If anyone can help you get from good to great with doing the work you enjoy, it's him. Truly, the insights you'll get from Pat can very well change the course of your life forever if you're ready. Before pushing play, I want you to know that you are special. No joke, I really mean that... You are a unique human being with unique gifts and experiences that are more valuable than you may realize when it comes to doing work that you enjoy. Whatever you decide to target for your career, or even in starting your own business, I want you to ask: What skills, talents, capacities, and/or experiences do I have that can help make me successful in this venture? Ask the question, then write down what you've got. You'll be surprised at just how qualified you are to do the thing that you really love. That's why you love it! No one said this was going to be easy. But, I will say today that it is going to be worth it. The first step: Getting knowledge from the people who have gone before you. It all starts for you right now! In this episode you'll discover: Why doing work that you don't enjoy may be impacting your health and fitness. Why "doing everything right" doesn't always equate to achieving what you want. How providing value, even if you do it for free, can turn into a profitable career. Why you owe it to yourself and society to do work that you enjoy. What the law of reciprocity is and how it can transform your life. Why the concerns of "being an expert" prevent many people from having success. How the struggles in your life (especially when deciding to do work you love) can develop you better than anything else. What part of your brain literally seeks out resources to help you achieve your goals. Why you need to learn what you're good at versus what you need help with. (The quicker, the better!) Why failure is misconstrued in our society. How you can get lost by not doing the "right work", not having a map, and not asking for help. What great tips you can use to have better work/life integration. Why you need to appreciate the "small wins". Why health & wellness programs are growing rapidly within businesses today. How improving your health can radically improve your results at work. How accountability can help you in business, health, and life. Ep 70TMHS 070: How To Accomplish Any Goal You Want, Overcome Addictions, And Reframe Your Thinking - With James Swanwick
Many people in our modern world have this romantic idea that we're always supposed to have what we want. Most of us have never stop to realize that not having what we want is often at the root of our unhappiness. I'm not talking about fantastical delusions like wishing you had a spaceship, wishing you were besties with Kanye West AND Taylor Swift (that would make for some interesting conversations), or wishing you were richer than Scrooge McDuck, swimming in a vault of money. These are all far out fantasies... What I'm talking about here is something more tangible. We all want to be loved. We all want to feel supported. We all want to feel safe and healthy. We all want to know that we truly matter. These are not misguided desires, these are all human nature. But, it's the way we go about achieving these things that cause us so much pain and frustration. Is there work you really want to be doing, but can't seem to make it happen because of your current circumstances? Are you as healthy as you want to be? Are you happy in your relationships? Are you waking up doing the things that fulfill you everyday? On a negative side, do you have patterns of behavior that cause you to fail again and again? Do you have addictions that are hurting you consciously or unconsciously? Do you find yourself giving up on having the things you really want and find yourself settling? You absolutely can achieve many of the great things that you set out to do. It's just about having the right strategy to make them a reality. To get you that strategy, I've got a guest who knows a thing or two about achieving great things. Right now you're going to learn from James Swanwick who's a former ESPN Sportcenter Anchor, celebrity journalist, and author who had no idea how he was going to make his goals a reality until he started to implement his five step formula that he's going to share with you today. But before we get into how to really achieve your goals, here's one of the biggest secrets of all... It's not in acquiring these things that make us happy. And it's not in getting rid of the negative things that make us happy. It is the PROCESS of achieving the goals that brings the very best out of us and makes us who we are. This is where real long-term happiness resides. Don't go chasing after your goals to find happiness because it will only end in discontentment. Chase after your goals because the process will enliven you... And achieve your goals because you can! In this episode you'll discover: Why focusing on the behavior you want to change can cause you to fail. How to reframe your thinking to make accomplishing your goal easier. The 5 steps to achieving any goal you want. Why you need to be more specific when setting your goals. How your brain filters out data to help you find what you want. How to use "how" and "what" questions to RADICALLY increase your ability to accomplish your goals (this is so powerful!) How to overcome addictions by using an incremental process. Why writing your goal down actually works. How to create "small victories" that help you achieve your goals. The real reason that people don't take action to achieve what they want. What the fear of success is and how it can sabotage you. How to overcome obstacles that come up while working on your goals. Ep 69TMHS 069: Super Nutrition And Total Human Optimization - With Aubrey Marcus
If we're going to be successful in the field of nutrition, then we've got to come to the realization that EVERYTHING you put into your body has an impact. Whether you're eating a walnut or a doughnut, it will change every cell in your body at some level. Food is truly that powerful. It's time we start to leverage this to look and feel the way that we want. I often tell people that food isn't just food, it's information. And we need to start asking questions like: What kind of information am I putting into my body? Before you make a decision to eat a food, take a supplement, or take a drug, just take a second and contemplate what this substance is commanding your body to do. Are you making a food choice that is commanding your body to secrete more insulin than it can handle, store more fat, and damage your metabolism? You can literally command your body to do this with a bottle of Mountain Dew. Are you taking a synthetic supplement that will overstimulate your nervous system and make you think that you have more energy... when you're really just burning out your adrenal glands? We have to take more responsibility for what we are putting into our bodies so that we can rise above the disease, poor performance, and struggle that has become commonplace in our society. Knowing all of this, it's not a small thing to take a supplement. You'd better know what's in that supplement, where it comes from, and whether or not the human body even recognizes it in the first place. Today we've got on the CEO of a company that is focused on what they call Total Human Optimization. Everyone from professional athletes to top executives are rushing to get their hands on the products and information that this company has put together. Onnit is a brand that's making huge waves in the fitness and nutrition industry by standing for something unique. It's not just about the incredible supplements they carry (that are actually derived from earth grown nutrients), it's about the food you eat, it's about the exercise you do, and it's about the lifestyle you take on to bring it all together and make it work. The CEO of Onnit, Aubrey Marcus, cares about people, cares about service, and cares about making a real impact. He's a leader that really walks his talk, and he's about to share a wealth of information with you that can improve your life for many years to come. In this episode you'll discover: How to turn the knowledge you acquire into real change in your life. What influenced Aubrey to begin taking supplements (great story about a napkin!) Why athletes like A.J. Hawk from the Green Bay Packers are using Onnit products (this will surprise you!) Why earth-grown nutrients need to be the basis of all high quality supplements. How taking synthetic supplements can work in the short-term but cost you in the long-term. What compounds in hemp protein make it so interactive with human muscle. Why hemp was paramount to the growth of the U.S. then eventually banned due to corporate interest. Whether or not hemp protein will cause you to fail a drug test. How using higher quality supplements saves you money because you use less of it. Why radioactive wastes and heavy metals may be a concern with conventional fish oil. Where to find a safer, more effective source of Omega 3's. How cordyceps impacts your cells to give you more energy. What an adaptogen is and why we need them. How our society has been trained to fear dietary fat. Why dietary fat is CRITICAL to your nervous system function (you'll love this analogy!) What Trilogy Butter is and why I eat it out of the jar like a madman. Why the human body is not designed to only do linear movements (squats are great but...) Why service, not money, is the key to success in the long-term. Items mentioned in this episode include: Onnit.com/Model <== Get your optimal health & performance supplements at 10% off! Ep 68TMHS 068: Boost Your Fat Loss With These 5 Tips For A Healthy Liver
You're going to be shocked to find out how much your liver function impacts your body's fat loss (or lack thereof). Your liver is often referred to as the "second brain" of your body, and for good reason. Your liver has responsibilities in regulating hormone function, assimilating nutrients, and handling insulin, just to name a few. All of these functions are critical to your health, and all of these functions are also critical to your metabolism. When looking to lose body fat, we tend to jump to the "external" things we can do, not understanding that fat loss is really an inside job. It's the function and performance of your body's major fat-burning organs that will tell the tale of your fat loss long-term. We need to do everything in our power to support these major organs in being as healthy as possible. This is really the key to losing fat and keeping it off. Today you're going to discover how to enhance the function of a member of the royal family of fat loss organs. Long live the liver! Enjoy! In this episode you'll discover: What the most regenerative organ in you body is (and why you can't have it removed). Why whey protein powder can be problematic. How your liver impacts the macronutrients you eat (this is critical!) What role your liver plays in the creation of fat. What hormone is responsible for fat storage in your body. Why you need to find your carbohydrate tipping point. The truth about how cholesterol in food impacts your body. Why many endurance athletes are getting off of high carbohydrate diets. What bile is and the two major roles it plays in your health. The gallbladder's function in supporting the liver (this is a great superhero reference!) How your liver is responsible for dealing with toxins and waste products. Why it's critical to avoid synthetic supplements and drugs and much as possible. The powerhouse hormone that your liver produces (muscle growth, energy, and more!) How your liver interacts with insulin. 5 common culprits that can cause liver damage. The impact that most unsaturated oils have on your liver. How to use olive oil (and not have it hurt you). What the "noodle challenge" is. (Are you up for it?) How alcohol impacts your liver. Ep 67TMHS 067: 5 Health & Performance Tips For Entrepreneurs (And Anyone Interested In High Performance Overall!)
Whether you consider yourself an entrepreneur or not, there are facets of your life that you need to run the lead on. You may be the CEO of a major organization, or the CEO of your house and kids. The word entrepreneur comes from the French word entreprende which means 'to undertake'. When you undertake the responsibility of being the boss, it's essential that you know how to keep your health and energy up to par. Many entrepreneurs don't do well because they don't feel well. Many more entrepreneurs have no idea about the profits and impact they're leaving on the table because they don't have the energy to move on opportunities when they present themselves. As a matter of fact, they are missing on opportunities left and right because they can't even see them in the first place! There is a story of a man walking along who was always frustrated, irritated, and in poor health. He tripped over something sticking up out of the ground, and cursed at it as he stumbled to catch his balance. He never looked down, just continued on in his agitation and frustration on how life would not cut him a break. There was another man who was considered an optimist walking along. He was in good health, happy, and tended to look for the best in things. He went walking down the same path as the frustrated man and tripped over the same thing sticking up out of the ground. He caught his balance, looked down to see what it was, and it was a piece of gold that had been wedged into the earth. He exclaimed, "This is my lucky day!", and reached down, dug the piece of gold out, and went on about his day. This story illustrates that the world is what it is. And depending on your own unique perception, you'll either see abundant opportunities or you'll continue to see problems everywhere you go. Both are existing simultaneously, but it's up to you to support yourself in seeing the good, because no one else is going to do it for you. There is a huge wave of executives and entrepreneurs that are shifting their focus to self-care so that they can show up better in their business and lives. They understand that their energy and focus can make the difference between them and the next person who can out hustle them, out produce them, and out think them because their health is lagging. They understand that they need to be on top of their game to see the opportunities surrounding them. This is your opportunity, today, to find out some of the secrets of some of the most productive people in the world. What things are they doing to keep stress in check? What things are they doing to keep their energy levels high? What things are they utilizing to perform at their very best. You're about to learn that and more right now! In this episode you'll discover: How reviewing and relistening to empowering messages can change your brain. What it really means to be an entrepreneur. Ep 66TMHS 066: How Food Impacts Your Genetics And 4 Steps For Reaching Your Highest Genetic Potential
I remember R&B artist Genuwine had a hit song called "In Those Jeans" a few years back. Though the spelling is different from the genes we're talking about here today, the objective is still the same. Let me explain... The song is about getting in the jeans of the hottest person possible. Sexually charged: Yes. Unintentionally scientific: You better believe it. We all want to get in the genes of our most vibrant, healthy and attractive self. Understanding that you do, in fact, have the power to change your genetic expression is one of the most important discoveries you'll ever make. Our society has been indoctrinated with this idea that your genes control everything about you. Your genes are the governing entity that will determine your health and longevity, and even control your success in life to a large extent. This is called genetic determinism, but it's really the best free pass ever to give up on yourself. Overweight: Can't control it, it's my genes. Diabetic: Can't control it, it's my genes. Cancer: Can't control it, it's my genes. Depressed: Can't control it, it's my genes. Issue after issue, conventional science has been advocating that there is a gene that controls it and makes it inevitable in your life. The reality is that this is simply not true... One of the most rapidly growing divisions of science is a field called epigenetics. Epi- (like epi-dermis) means above, so this area of science is focused on what's above genetic control. Now if genes control our life, how could something be above it? The answer is that the public hasn't been given the full story, but that's all about to change for you today. Your genes are literally a blueprint. They have the instructions to make things, but they don't actually make things themselves. Just as if you were to ask an architect, "What is that house blueprint doing?" First of all, he will look at you like you're a few sandwiches short of a picnic, secondly he would tell you that the blueprint isn't doing anything. It doesn't do anything unless it gets read, and then WE decide if we're going to use it. The point to really take away from this is that your lifestyle, your habitual behaviors, and your choices in life, more than any other thing, determine what your genes are doing. As you'll learn today, even a lack of sleep can disrupt the expression of over a thousand genes. And this is just a slice of the pie... How do our food, our exercise, and our relationships impact our genetic expression? You're about to learn how all of these things you're engaged in are actually creating your body and life. Not your genes by themselves, but with you in the driver's seat. In the song Genuwine asks, "Is there any more room for me (in those jeans)?" You're about to learn that there's plenty of room in your genes for variation. You get to control, to a large extent, whether you spend your time trying to get into the wrong genes, or you become empowered and get into the hottest genes possible. Enjoy this, share, and remember how powerful you are! In this episode you'll discover: What the most bioavailable source of protein for the human body is (a must know!) What genes actually are and what they do. The shocking number of genes human beings really have (this it mind blowing!) The truth about how many people actually have genetic defects. What epigenetics are and why this is a MUST for you to know about. The growing fields of science showing how food impacts your genetic expression. How your parents impact your genetic expression (and what you need to do now). Why conscious parenting is critical in human evolution. 4 steps to turning on better genetic programs and become "unstuck" in your body. How fasting impacts your genetic expression. 2 ways to utilize fasting to positively influence your genes. How to do an intermittent fast (and what intermittent fasting really is). The real reason you need to eat organic food (this is funny, but true.) A wild food that is easily accessible to you (probably in your backyard!) Why humans have allowed the use of genetically modified foods. What the top 10 genetically modified foods are. What common food has been genetically altered to be a vaccine. How movement impacts your genetic expression. A fun hack you can use while walking to upgrade your genetics. Why health problems are far more common among night workers. Ep 65TMHS 065: How To Improve Your Emotional Intelligence And Transform Your Relationships - With Jordan Harbinger
Do you consider yourself an intelligent person? What about an emotionally intelligent person? Your answer to the first question better be, "Yes!" (you're reading this empowering information aren't you... sheesh). Your answer to the second question better be a stronger, "Yes!" or at least, "I'm definitely working on it." What is emotional intelligence, and why is it important? Emotional intelligence encompasses so much that it's impossible to drill it down into a simple meaning. Rather, I'll share with you two of the most profound components of it. Emotional intelligence is being able to feel how you want, when you want, and to guide your own behavior accordingly (that's part one). Emotional intelligence is being able to monitor other people's emotions, and to utilize that emotional data to influence and navigate relationships (that's part two, and it's definitely in the secret sauce). We are often indoctrinated with the belief that the environment will dictate how we feel. We live in constant reaction mode because no one has ever sat us down to train us on developing our emotional software. Our guest today says that, "Your beliefs influence your actions which influence your results." It's your beliefs that are at the core of this thing, and it's up to you to learn how to change them. Our guest today is Jordan Harbinger from The Art Of Charm. He's one of the leaders in the field of emotional intelligence, and even more so he's a leader in teaching its practical application. Today you're going to learn how to start to wire yourself for greater confidence, more happiness, and greater success by upgrading your emotional software. In this episode you'll discover: What really determines your "outer world" actions. Why we need to develop emotional intelligence in our relationships and in our work. Why most people think that attractive personality traits are natural (when they're actually learned). How being good with people can fast track you in your health, relationships, and career. Why boosting your attraction is more of a subtractive process than an additive process. How going through the situation you're afraid of (in practice) can help you overcome it. The truth about your "inner dialogue". Why your first impression isn't always made when you want to make it (this is crucial!) A powerful drill you can do to habitually boost your confidence. How to improve your eye contact to establish better rapport (this is deeper than you think!) What the most influential factor in your health, well-being, and success in life really is. What emotional intelligence is and how it can play out in your life. Why habits are far more important than results. How mirror neurons in our brain influence our emotional intelligence. Why consciously using acknowledgement can help anchor in desired habits. A game-changing practice you can apply today to be more of an emotionally intelligent person. Ep 63TMHS 063: Why You Need To Detox, Bulletproof Your Kidneys, And Sleep For Success - With Sheleana Jennings
Everyday the vast majority of your body's energy is used to digest, assimilate, and eliminate the resources you consume. The resources I'm speaking of are the foods you eat, the liquids you drink, and the air that you breathe. Today, we only experience a fraction of our body's true potential energy. So much of our energy is being tied up in digesting food that our bodies are unable to do the deeper house cleaning that we truly need. Your body's first priority is to handle the food that's coming into it because that's your cellular frontline. What comes in your mouth can take you out of this life fast, so your immune system and other support must be present in your gut and on guard at all times. Add to that the fact that today we have endless meals being thrown in there and we've got a serious energy siphoning happening. Most of us don't know the art and science of eating lightly or fasting for even a short time period. For many of us, breakfast is being pushed through by lunch, is pushed through by dinner, is pushed through by dessert, is pushed through by breakfast... and on and on and on. Our bodies never get a break. Our internal organs are constantly processing food and the resulting metabolic waste products. Can your body handle this burden? Well, yes (in the short-term.) Was it designed to deal with the toxicity of our modern world? In the immortal words on the philosopher Bart Simpson, "No way man!" Being exposed to abnormal amounts of dangerous compounds is now common in our world today. Even if you're eating organic, radioactive fallout has been seen in our water, air, and soil, so truly, no food chain is free of contamination. For example, only days after the Fukushima nuclear disaster, higher levels of radioactive cesium-137 was found in tuna caught off the California coast. Even dairy products on the west coast were showing traces of radiation from the event. The reality is, our world is very different from the one we have evolved to live in. More pollution, more radiation, and poorer food, water, and air quality means we have a serious issue at hand. Should we throw up our arms and run away? Unless you've got a spaceship or know Richard Branson (who does have a spaceship) where the heck are you going to go? Knowing what you are dealing with, and knowing that you've got to adapt, the better question to ask is: What are you going to do about this? I'm a big advocate of knowing how to assist your body in the natural processes of detoxification. Today I've got an incredible resource in this mission for you that will bring you lots of value for many years to come. My guest is Sheleana Jennings from YoungAndRaw.com and they have some of the best cleansing and rejuvenation programs out there. The hundreds of thousands of people following their work should be an indicator, but I'll let you hear it for yourself. :) In this episode you'll discover: How a young person can develop painful kidney stones. How to "hear" the communication your body is giving you about what you need. What detoxification actually is. Why detoxing doesn't necessarily mean fasting. Why learning the skill of detoxification is important in our world today. How waste products and toxins can build up in our tissues. Why your liver and kidneys are so vital in detoxification. How to cleanse your kidneys and how to eliminate kidney stones (pain-free). What things you should juice to detoxify and heal your kidneys. Ep 58TMHS 058: How The Work You Do Impacts Your Health And Happiness - With John Lee Dumas
Health is much bigger than finding a diet and exercise program that work well for you. Your health is something that's always in flux... it's holistic, multi-dimensional, and far beyond a banana and some sit-ups. One of the biggest pieces of health that's unwisely overlooked is happiness. That's right, your level of happiness has a huge impact on your health for many powerful underlying reasons. For starters, research published by the Harvard University School of Public Health shows that happiness and an overall optimistic attitude cut the risk of heart disease in half for 6,000 study participants who were tracked over a 20 year period. Another study that included more than 3,000 people over the course of 8 years found that happier people maintained better physical health and mobility as they aged. And this is only half the story... This same study also found that the unhappiest participants were 80 percent more likely to develop physical impairments as they aged. Unhappiness caused a sustained activation of the body’s stress response system, leading to a greater likelihood of developing heart disease, systemic inflammation, and even cancer. So if this doesn't get you to sit up and pay attention to your happiness then you must be related to Archie Bunker, Al Bundy, or Squidward from Spongebob Squarepants. The harsh reality is: You may discover the most powerful diet and exercise in the world, but your results won't matter very much in the long run if you're not happy. Of all things that effect people's optimism, there is one that can really make or break you in the happiness department. What you do for a living has an incredible influence on your happiness and overall vitality. For most people, their workplace is where they spend half of their waking hours 5 days a week. People often spend more time at work and with their coworkers during the week than their own family and friends... so hopefully you can see why being happy with work is so important. If you don't love the work you do and want a change OR if you simply want strategies to get the most out of life and love what you do even more, I've got something special for you. I've invited an amazing guest on for you today. He's helping hundreds of thousands of people all over the world get connected to work that they're passionate about. He's providing real expertise and real strategies 7-days a week through his top-rated podcast. And today he's going to share some life-changing information to help you live a life that's truly worthy of you. In this episode you'll discover: What major issue (outside of diet and exercise) is damaging the health of millions today. What valuable qualities you can learn from the military that can help you in life. The inspiring story of why John decided to start his own business. Why doing work that inspires you is critical to long-term success. The real reason most people DO NOT do work that they love for a living. How doing work you love creates a virtuous circle of taking great care of your health. Why momentum is so powerful in success AND failure. Why starting with small things can add up to big success. The 1st thing to do when making any life change (the enlightened truck-driver story). What new technology allows you to say YES to what you want without saying NO to your responsibilities. How to drill what you learn through podcasts deeper into your mind and body. How to use podcasts to motivate yourself to do things you would normally skip out on. Ep 54TMHS 054: Sleep Smarter - The Connection Between Sleep, Sex, Income, And Fat Loss
Initially I was surprised to find out that poor sleep quality has been linked to financial debt and lower income. In our culture, we're led to believe that in order to be successful you've got to burn the midnight oil, keep working hard until you make it, and you can always sleep when you're dead. And there lies the problem. According to the research, if you're not more mindful of your sleep quality, your chances of dying prematurely can skyrocket. And not only that, the very money that you're sacrificing sleep to make, will be the same money you pay to try to get your health back again. Today is a powerhouse show that's going to help you optimize your sleep, be more productive, and add more vitality into your life. Ep 53TMHS 053: Getting A Mindset Makeover, Food Cravings, And Food Separatism With Alex Jamieson
Everyday, people all over the world are adopting a healthier lifestyle. More people are going vegan, paleo, primal, or "real food" than ever before. What's causing this cultural shift is: 1) people are sick and tired of being sick and tired and 2) beliefs about food bind us together, create communities, and communities inherently grow. With the internet eliminating the borders of people sharing ideas, beliefs, and insights, these communities are expanding rapidly. Even though the health conversation has exploded worldwide, different views by different communities can bring people together AND tear people apart. We're going to talk in depth about this today. We're also going to talk with our special guest, Alex Jamieson, about her experience being a part of the Oscar nominated film Supersize Me. She's going to share the intimate effects it had on her life, as well as our culture at large. We're going to cover food cravings, raw vs. cooked food, mistakes people make on diets, plus a whole lot more. Get ready, because this episode is powerful! In this episode you'll discover: How Alex went from being sick and overweight to a renowned gourmet chef and health coach. What Alex's experience in the film Supersize Me taught her about food and illness. How Supersize Me changed the landscape of food around the world. The surprising story of how Alex transitioned out of a vegan lifestyle. Why our genes need to be considered when choosing the foods we eat. How labeling the way we eat can unknowingly separate ourselves from others. Why fear can drive people to keep secrets about the foods they eat. The critical piece that people mistake with Albert Einstein's vegetarian perspective. What common factor can unite us to have a healthier, happier society. Why a vegan diet can be incredibly healing (for the right people at the right time). Why eating more raw foods can be critical to your health and vitality. Ep 51TMHS 051: The Answer To Cancer - With Bestselling Author Ty Bollinger
I recently gave a short presentation in front of a group of over 7,000 people. They were all there as cancer survivors, or the loved ones of those who've survived or who have lost their fight. This event really sparked something in me. To witness a sea of people all coming together for one purpose, but to not know what the cause of this disease is really broke my heart. Honestly, I have spoken for audiences big and small; high pressure situations and euphoric situations alike. None of those instances phased me much. But this event made it difficult for me to speak. I wanted to yell, and scream that this doesn't have to happen! I wanted to take each person by the hand, sit them down, and talk about how we can end this struggle, and make a better life for our future generations. Instead, I had just a few minutes to give them some hope... And to give them something valuable to walk away with to better the chances in their fight. Well, I know that fighting is not the road to take. It's bigger than a fight. It's something more courageous. It's having the audacity to love yourself enough that you will pay unyielding attention to yourself. You will finally pay attention to your body, pay attention to the nutrition it requires; the movement it requires; the rest it requires; and the appreciation it requires to make you the best you possible. In this episode you're going to hear from bestselling author Ty Bollinger about how we can make this happen. You're going to learn how we can take our power back as free, sovereign individuals to live a life that's worthy of us. You don't have to be afraid of cancer. This episode will prove it to you. Cancer doesn't have to be the end of your story. As a matter of fact, there are countless people who've eliminated cancer from their body through what Ty is sharing that will tell you it was actually the beginning of their story.
