Ep 129TMHS 129: How To Be Fit, Healthy, And Harder To Kill - With Guest Steph Gaudreau
It’s not often that you meet someone like Steph Gaudreau. After leaving a comfy job teaching high school science to pursue her passions in health and fitness, she’s one of the rare individuals who set out to reinvent themselves after you’d think that it was too late. That’s the big issue. It’s the thinking involved that hinders so many of us. Steph didn’t make the leap without having fear. She didn’t take a huge risk knowing exactly what was going to happen. Fear was there, uncertainty was there, but she made the decision to do it anyway. All of the changes in our lives start with a decision. It’s up to us to take control of our thinking and make the necessary adjustments we want to see in our lives. Whether it’s in our health, career, relationships, or anything else, it’s within our power to make the shifts necessary. And one of the interesting things Steph believes is that getting physically strong will make you mentally strong as well. Today you’re going to learn exactly what she means by that plus a whole lot more. Steph runs several powerhouse health and fitness platforms. She created the ridiculously popular website StupidEasyPaleo.com where she shares recipes and other health-related info, she’s a bestselling author, and she also runs the the chart-topping podcast Harder to Kill Radio. Today you’re going to hear about Steph’s story and how she made the transition from the conventional classroom to teaching online (and all over the world). You’re also going to learn some of the key insights that has enabled Steph to be so successful in helping other people, as well what her person fitness regimen looks like so you can see what keeps her fit, strong, and huge inspiration to others. In this episode you'll discover: What drove Steph Gaudreau to leave her 10+ year job as a science teacher to start a solo career promoting health and fitness. How certain body types lend themselves towards better performance in certain sports. Why Steph no longer obsesses about the way her body looks (this is powerful!) How doing what you love will help to change your inner dialogue/inner critic. Why your body’s form will follow the function that’s required of it. Why the exercise that you do transfers over into other areas of your life. How your personality gains strength through lifting weights. What crazy good numbers Steph has achieved on her favorite power lifts. Why deadlifting is important for reversing and preventing back problems. How Steph’s exercise program has changed over time and what it looks like today. Why being “harder to kill” is a compelling drive to get healthier. Ep 127THMS 127: Beat Inflammation, Boost Fat Loss, And Recover Faster - The Benefits Of Cold Thermogenesis
When we think about fat burning... we think about heat; we think about sweat; we think about going all out. Sure, those things are synonymous with burning fat work, but what if there was another way? I was absolutely floored when I dug into the research regarding the benefits of cold thermogenesis. Not only is cold a powerful catalyst for burning fat, but the clinically proven impact on hormone function, accelerated recovery, and anti-aging effects should be something that all of us are interested in. This powerhouse episode details what I've learned in my research and personal experimentation over the last year. You're going to learn how, in a strange way, our genes respond favorably to temporary cold exposure. You're also going to learn how to take advantage of this in the least challenging, most beneficial ways. Check it out and make sure to share your thoughts and insights in the comments below. Are you hot for being cold? Click play, listen in, and let me know! In this episode you'll discover: What "net carbs" mean and what fiber really is. How contrast showers generate more "nerve force". How a Tony Robbins event sparked my interest in learning more about cryotherapy. What special type of fat can actually burn body fat. Where this special fat-burning fat is found on your body. The 3 ways you can increase your body's good fat to burn more bad fat. What the health benefits of contrast showers are. Why using cold showers to decrease libido is a myth (in fact, it might do the opposite!) How whole body cryotherapy works. How someone is able to eat 12,000 calories a day and still be shredded. The surprising impact that cold thermogenesis has on inflammation. How cryotherapy reduces pain and speeds recovery. Why your body produces more powerful antioxidants than any food you can find. The shocking impact that cryotherapy has on your hormones. Items mentioned in this episode include: Onnit.com/Model <== Get your optimal health & performance supplements at 10% off! Ep 125TMHS 125: Accelerate Your Results With The Power Of Mastermind Groups - With Guest Pat Flynn
What sets people who are achieving phenomenal results apart from those achieving average results is usually not skill or talent. People who achieve phenomenal results tend to simply do things differently from those who don't. It may be in how they sequence things (maybe they eat high-carb foods after working out instead of before working out for example: hint, hint), it may be how they compile information to use or teach, it may be how they work with other people, it may be the habits they have. One of the greatest habits I've seen in talking with some of the most successful people in the world in their respective fields is that they are proactive about being in mastermind groups. What is a mastermind group, and why are they so valuable to high achievers? Well, the answer isn't as cut and dry as it may seem. That's why I brought on one of the most successful people I know to talk about mastermind groups, how they work on the inside, and how to get the most from them. Once you find out these insights, you can be able to find or form mastermind groups of your own to 10X the results in pretty much any area of your life. Health, relationships, parenting, business, you name it. Instead of trying to always figure things out on your own, being a part of a mastermind gives you access to resources that you simply can't get anywhere else. Let's go! In this episode you'll discover: Why being of service and contribution is so intimately tied to your overall success. What huge benefit things like listening to podcasts and going to events really hold. Where the word mastermind comes from and what it actually means. What a mastermind group does when they come together (this is powerful!). How often mastermind groups need to meet. Why transparency is so important within a mastermind. Whether or not people in your mastermind should be in the same field. Examples of different types of masterminds you can create. What you can do to find or create your own mastermind group. Why it's important to have structured criteria or a "constitution" for members of your mastermind group. What incredible free tools you can use to meet up and work with your mastermind group. Critical tips to help you get the most out of your mastermind sessions. Ep 123TMHS 123: How To Discover Your Purpose And LIVE IT!
Today we are dealing with a major deficiency in our culture. Sure we’re dealing with an epidemic of nutritional deficiencies… but there is an even bigger deficiency I’m talking about. It’s a deficiency in knowing our purpose. Statistically, people who know who they are and live with a sense of purpose outlive everyone else in the population. Not only that, they experience far fewer chronic illnesses, far less memory loss, and more happiness in life overall. It kind of makes sense when you think about it. Your mind and body really work on a “use it or lose it basis”. And if you are not inspired to use your body and mental faculties each day, why on earth would they be compelled to stick around? Your purpose is literally tied to your lifeline. And today is the day to get fully connected with who you are, why you’re here, and what you’re all about. Today’s show is loaded with insights to help you reveal what Paulo Coelho would call your own “personal legend”. There’s actually a formula for uncovering your life’s purpose. It’s incredibly simple, but it’s only applicable if you’re ready for it. So, if you’re ready, click play, listen with your heart, and take action on the exercises. Let’s go! In this episode you'll discover: Why you actually get to choose what your brain is made of. How a sense of purpose impacts aging and development. How purpose means different things to different people. Why having lots of choices can become debilitating. What the formula for finding your purpose is. Why failure can be a huge launching pad to uncovering your purpose. What important questions to ask yourself in order to flesh out your purpose. How passion really ties into finding your purpose (and it’s not what you think!) Why making a decision to live your purpose is often the hardest thing to do. What the word decision really means and how to build your decision-making muscles. Important caveats about living your purpose that involves other people (you won’t be happy without this!) Why it’s CRITICAL to understand your own personal nature. Ep 122TMHS 122: Why Your Environment Shapes Your Body And How To Move Your DNA - With Guest Katy Bowman
This conversation with biomechanist and award-winning writer Katy Bowman instantly changed my life. Because I’m a very analytical person, sometimes I like to know the WHY before I jump head over heels into something. Katy broke down exactly why movement matters so much, and how myself and many others are fooling ourselves when it comes to living an active lifestyle. Even though I’ve been exercising for many years, and I even appeared to be fit on the outside, I was actually in the growing number of people who are classified as “actively sedentary”. This was a serious gut check for me. According to the research, even though exercise is awesome and incredibly good for us, it’s not tapping into our best genetic expression by a long shot. You see, even if you work out for an hour a day, you are still only four percent more active than someone who doesn’t exercise at all! That four percent absolutely makes a difference, but when it boils down to it, one hour of activity doesn’t hold a candle to what we do the other 23 hours of the day. I’ve made many strides over the years to combat this disparagement. Standing desk, periodic breaks for mobility work, and even the occasional walk in the middle of the work day. I knew these things made me feel better, but I also knew I would forgo them on a consistent basis because I was trying to get my work done first. After listening to this episode again, I immediately took a nice walk. But this walk was different from any walk I’ve ever been on. I was paying attention to things I had never noticed before. I had a real awareness of how valuable that walk was, and the small things I was doing during it that made the experience for my body even better. What you’re about to learn from Katy today will likely change your life in an empowering way forever. These insights and tips will help you to realize some of the problems that have been hiding in plain sight, and give you the tools to break through them once and for all! In this episode you'll discover: Why consume conventional animal foods can create inflammation. What a biomechanics are and how they impact your life. Why exercise and movement are not really the same thing. How your environment shapes your body. What nutritious movement is. Why walking is equivalent to a macronutrient. How your body actually adapts to things you put on your body (it’s shocking how much shoes can change you!) Why just like “junk food” there is also “junk moving”. What it means to be actively sedentary. What cellular loads are (this is important!) How killer whales in captivity can demonstrate the way our environment dictates our cellular expression. How underwear can inhibit the natural function of your organs and tissues. Why constantly self-regulating the temperature in your environment can prevent important muscles from developing. What you can do to move your DNA and add more nutritious movement to your day. Ep 121TMHS 121: Changing Our Relationship With Food, Overcoming Bulimia, And Recipes That Will Change Your Life - With George Bryant
Food matters. Eating food is one of the most intimate things that we’ll ever experience in life. You are literally taking something from outside of yourself and deciding (consciously or unconsciously) to make it a part of you. If we’re asleep to the real power of food, we won’t realize that every-single-thing we eat is changing every-single-cell in our bodies. Your genes, your DNA, your upwards of 100 trillion cells, are all in action to convert that chosen food into more you. Now, here’s the real kicker of the situation… You get to CHOOSE what you’re made out of. You can make yourself out of the most vitalizing, storied, health-giving foods in the world - or you can make yourself out of Honey Buns, Fruit Loops, Cheetos, and Skittles. Grass-fed steak, bananas, or bagels… the choice is always up to you. Now, that can be incredibly empowering, or incredibly scary depending on where your mindset is at. Navigating this world of food today takes a special kind of awareness and heart. That's why we brought on our special guest today, because he’s all heart, he developed awareness through experience, and he can make you a meal that will bring tears to your eyes (like that single tear rolling down your cheek seen only in a movie scene). Our guest today is New York Times bestselling author George Bryant (also known as the man behind Civilized Caveman Cooking). Today is going to be a real treat because the Civilized Caveman himself is here to share his story and his secrets with you. We’re going to talk about our crucial relationship with food, overcoming eating disorders, deeply impacting the lives of others, recipes that will change your life, plus a whole lot more. In this episode you'll discover: How you can be a master in the kitchen in a lot less time than you think. Why a “degree” is not the solution to helping people. Why the food you make yourself and your family matters more than anything. What a triggering event means in relationship to eating disorders. What some of the symptoms of bulimia really are. How George was able to finally overcome bulimia (this is a powerful story!) Why authenticity, congruency, and vulnerability are essential to long-term success. How to make S.M.A.R.T. commitments to yourself and others. Why it’s important to speak up in order to gain support in our lives. How our relationship with food shapes our life. Why an obsession with eating healthy can also be problematic. How our perception of food creates our experience of eating. It’s a big mistake to believe that exercise is all about looking good. We can literally increase our mental energy, prevent disease, and lengthen our lifespan by reaping the benefits of exercise. Today you’re going to discover how all of this works and so much more. Just click play, take good notes, and (most importantly) go and get some exercise when it’s over! In this episode you'll discover: Why people who exercise have been found to be more productive. Ep 118TMHS 118: Scary Dairy - The Pros And Cons Of Consuming Dairy Products
For a lot of us, nothing says love like some delicious milk and cookies. Or maybe it’s ice cream that you just can’t do without? Or hard cheeses? Or yogurt? Or maybe you get really sexy and dip your food into fondue? Whatever it may be that pulls on those heart strings for you, one thing is for certain: Dairy has a huge emotional connection with people in our world today. This, my health seeking friend, is at the very center of the situation… When it comes to dairy, a lot of people may be aware of the ill effects, but if you try to take it away they’ll cling on to that Ben & Jerry’s container like it’s the bonafide love of their life. They’ll say, “I’ll follow your fancy nutrition advice Mr. Health Guy, but I’m not giving up my dairy!” First of all, I’m not the guy that’s interested in taking things away from people. But if it’s causing you health problems like diabetes, high body fat, and allergies (you’re about to learn about all of that stuff in a minute) then maybe you might want to leave it alone for a while. As I step back so that I don’t get stabbed with an ice cream scooper… I’m here to share why, in fact, dairy is so addictive and at the same time so harmful for most people. Today we’re going to breakdown some long-believed myths about dairy in a way that’s going to blow your mind (and possibly stop you from blowing up bathrooms if you are lactose intolerant). In all seriousness, what you’re about to learn today will be life-changing for you and the people you care about. Ep 117TMHS 117: Feeding Your Family With A Busy Lifestyle And Why You Need To Put Yourself First - With Anne Stevenson
“Most people who meet my wife quickly conclude that she is remarkable. They are right about this. She is smart, funny and thoroughly charming. Often, after hearing her speak at some function or working with her on a project, people will approach me and say something to the effect of, you know, I think the world of you, but your wife, wow!” These words from President Barack Obama couldn't describe my experience any more perfectly. I've had the honor of helping to uplift and empower countless people, but when anyone gets a chance to meet my wife, they realize where all of the really good stuff is coming from. This woman is phenomenal. She's literally a breath of fresh air whenever you walk into a room that she's in. She's gorgeous, silly, loving and beyond intelligent. I seriously think I get smarter just by some weird osmosis from being around her. Now, let's be clear. She will tell you that she didn't get this way overnight. Sure many of these qualities were innately within her, but it was through self-work, introspection, making mistakes, and self-care that she was able to become the woman she is today. The self-work came from hitting the floor in so many situations in her life that she had to choose to raise her standards or stay glued firmly to the ground. The introspection was the hard work to look within and to see where her fears were at play, and the excuses that she had leaned on to justify not reaching her potential. Making mistakes came naturally as you employ the trial and success method to figure out what works for you as a unique individual with unique circumstances. The self-care is what enabled her to feel good, strong, beautiful, and capable of gracefully handling all of challenges that life throws your way. And all of this is a small piece of her story, but today you're going to learn far more and be able to glean some life-changing insights from her example. There is a balancing force within the universe that resides within all women. When a woman feels beautiful, appreciated, and strong within herself, unbounded miracles begin to happen around her. Diane Mariechild said, “A woman is the full circle. Within her is the power to create, nurture and transform.” As men, we have to help create the conditions for the women in our lives to thrive. Because truly, nothing can give us more strength than the support of a woman who owns her real power. There are a lot of valuable insights here for all women and all men, all mom and all dads, and all people who want to do something exceptional in their lives. On top of that, we're sharing some tips our family uses to eat healthy with all of the busy stuff going on, so this episode is jam-packed with goodness. In this episode you'll discover: How the American fast food culture can be an addictive shock for foreigners. Why destiny can sometimes be found within the loving arms of a gym. How a cancer scare became a catalyst for change in our family's lives. What your body's "innate intelligence" has to do with healing. What triggered the shift in my career from working in a gym to helping people with chronic illnesses. Why doubt can sabotage the results in your healing. The weird reason that Anne makes the bed each morning (it works though!). What my wife's morning routine looks like. How Anne is able to switch gears between family, wife, and work roles so efficiently. What strategies Anne uses to feed the family healthy food with a busy lifestyle. What "back up plans" we have to eat the best food possible in a pinch. Ep 112TMHS 112: Fitness Versus Health, Overtraining, And Bodybuilding Secrets - With Steve Cook
There is a lot more to health than just looking good. As a health & fitness expert, it may be grounds for impeachment to say that, but sometimes the reality of things can get off track when we're bombarded with so many messages telling us otherwise. A fit body does not necessarily mean a healthy liver, clean blood, optimal brain function, and a properly functioning gastrointestinal tract among other things. There are millions of seemingly "fit" people that are significantly unhealthy when you see them from the inside out. I know because I was one of these people... When I was 16-years old I had a 6-pack, huge pecs, and could run a 4.4 40-yard dash. I looked and even performed at a high level, but inside I was a ticking time-bomb waiting to go off. If you know my story then you know that by the age of just 20 I was diagnosed with a degenerative spinal disease that eventually led to a 50 pound weight, depression, and severe pain that had me on highly toxic painkillers for almost two and a half years of my life. There was a bright light at the end of the tunnel for me, but for many others who've been mislead by the health & fitness industry, they are still struggling to find their way. Well, we are working to make a huge shift in this today! You're about to get access to someone who is making tremendous strides in uniting the worlds of fitness and real health together. He doesn't claim to be perfect, nor does he want to be, but he has a model that has really worked for him, and now he's working to share it with the world. Our guest today is IFBB physique pro Steve Cook. He has found that real health is not just what you look like on the outside, and it's not just about the right nutrition and exercise either. It's about something far deeper and more important that you're going to learn today, and I think that you're going to be totally blown away! In this episode you'll discover: Why people can get lost in only caring about their physical appearance. How health and fitness can be two totally separate things. How bodybuilding competitions can distort your self-image when you're not preparing for a show. Why you typically don't see many healthy, vibrant bodybuilders once they get older in age. What inspired Steve to really look into the meaning of happiness (this is powerful!) The very 1st thing you need to do when working to change your body. What type of exercises are most important for making great physical changes. How the amount of weight and reps you do can change your body in different ways. Whether or not women should be concerned about putting on mass when lifting heavy weights. What priority training is. The only time you should never do cardio. Why having a plan matters so much. Powerful tips about squats that you need to know about. Whether or not overtraining is something you should be concerned about. We you might want to include supersets in your fitness training. Ep 111TMHS 111: Changing Your Self-Image, Leadership, And The ABC's Of Success - With Bob Proctor
Your life is like a wheel. There are so many different components that come together to create your own personal "circle of life" (cue the Lion King Music!). These components are: Your health - your family and relationships - your career/work or mission - your finances - and your spiritual health and contribution. Life is not complete without the growth and development in all of these areas. The problem is, we are usually very off balance in one or the other based on where we are in our life. Your body might be banging, but your finances are in the toilet. You might have awesome relationships, but you're simultaneously struggling in your career. So, you see, your "circle of life" (your wheel) is usually pretty jagged and bumpy because of some parts being up and some parts being down... and this is what leads to a very bumpy ride in life. The truth is, life will have it's ups and downs, but there can be a lot more smooth sailing if you're able to grow gracefully and consistently in all areas. The question really is: How do you do it? And today, I have the perfect person to show you exactly how it's done. Many years ago I was sitting with my then girlfriend (now my wife... yep, I scored!) and we were watching this film that my amazing mother-in-law said we HAVE to watch... I honestly wasn't very interested in watching it... I had so much going on with trying to figure out how to structure my client's programs and even how I was going to pay my rent. We clicked play, and something unexpected happened. A man named Bob Proctor came on the screen with this confidence, grace, and sense of knowing that I'd never experienced before. I hung on his every word, and whatever this man had figured out, I wanted to know it too! The film broke down the hidden, but extremely real world of quantum mechanics. Not in a, "you'd better put on your pocket protector way", but in a real world "I get this" way that made me realize something profound. I realized in that moment what I had always known intuitively my entire life... That I matter. That I'm special. That I'm here to share the unique gifts that I have. That I am influencing the world around me (for the good and the not-so-good) based on the predominant thoughts that I'm carrying around in my mind. Bob told me that day, "If you can see it in your mind, you can hold it in your hand." The science in the film really spoke to my man-brain. The message in the film really spoke to my heart. Today I'm beyond honored to say that I have Bob Proctor on my show to be able to share him with you. In my mind him connecting with me is a result of hard work and effort. In my heart him connecting with me is a result of how powerful we all our to attract into our life the people, things, and resources we need to make the life we want a reality. Buckle in tight, because this is powerful! In this episode you'll discover: Why your results in life depend on your "inner game". What book transformed Bob's life over 50 years ago that he still reads today. Why you can never truly enjoy something without sharing it. How financial health impacts your health overall. How contribution can radically improve your finances (it worked for me too!) The most important and useful skill that's not being taught in schools today. Why kids are able to learn so much more than they are often given credit for. Why you need to get straight A's WAY after your schooling days are over. What acceptance REALLY means and why it's so powerful in your life. Why listening is a critical skill for success (and why many of us are doing it wrong!) How every-single-person is a leader in one way or another. Why improving your leadership capacity is so important. Whether or not someone is a "producer" or an "almost". How your self-image is actually formed. What you must do to transform your self-image. Why you should NEVER try to lose weight again (this is powerful!) What your #1 driving force really is (whether you realize it or not!) Why most people are programmed NOT to have longevity and what you can do to change that. Ep 110TMHS 110: Weight Loss Breakthroughs, Accountability, And Getting Fit2Fat2Fit - With Drew Manning
Our health resides in a delicate balance. Each and every day, the actions we take are leading us towards health or away from health depending upon the decisions we make. One week of "dirty bulking" or "falling off the wagon" can cause tremendous harm to our bodies that science is just starting to understand. No matter how healthy you may be, if you and I start guzzling strawberry sodas by the case for a week and go in to get our blood work done, we'd both likely be diagnosed with pre-diabetes pretty easily... and this is just in one week! Now, what if we were to stretch that out, say, six months? And this time, not guzzling strawberry sodas (strawberry was obviously my favorite), but instead simply consuming the processed, "wholesome" package foods that much of our society subsides on... what do you think would happen with our health? Well, my guest today knows exactly what will happen, because he had the courage to put this experiment to the test. Our guest today is New York Times bestselling author Drew Manning. He was an extremely fit guy who took the Pepsi Challenge (literally) and transformed his life in the most surprising way. His journey, from being a lifelong fit person, to packing on the fat like he was getting paid for it, to becoming incredibly fit again, became a real phenomenon that inspired countless people all over the world to take on their own journey to fit, and the results have been mind-blowing. You're about to learn from Drew exactly how he put on major fat in just six months, and exactly how he shed it all off again in another six months. You're going to learn about the inner battle that happens when you're working to get back in shape, and some powerful insights to help you (or someone you love) to conquer them. What stands out about Drew is his heart, which I'm sure you'll pick up on today. I'm truly honored to have him on and to be able to share this with you. Enjoy, listen with your head and your heart, and put these things into action for yourself. In this episode you'll discover: Why personal experience trumps everything. Why never having a weight issue created a separation between Drew and his clients. How Drew’s wife surprisingly contributed to his 70 pound weight gain (this is funny!) What foods Drew chose to eat that caused him to gain 70 pounds in just 6 months. Why the foods Drew ate changed the way his body operated. How it can be hard NOT to exercise. How exercise bulimia compares to a positive habit of exercise. How Drew’s weight gain began to affect the relationship with his wife. Why sleep apnea can lead to overeating and a drastic decrease in energy. How your energy and mood impacts your life overall. The huge revelation Drew had about why people become comfortable being unhealthy. Why the mental and emotional aspects of weight loss are far more important than any weight loss program. How drinking soda drastically impacted Drew’s mind and body. What one of the biggest causes of overeating is (and how to avoid it!) Some of the important things people need to do when recovering from food addictions and working to transform their health. How accountability can help you make breakthroughs in your health and fitness goals. The radical transformation Drew made within 30 days of his weight loss journey (with a change in his diet alone!) What Dr. Oz had to say about Drew’s liver health due to his 70 pound weight gain. The startling impact that being overweight had on Drew’s confidence in the gym. Why Drew chose to workout “smarter” instead of longer (the results speak for themselves!) Ep 109TMHS 109: Smarter Supplementation And Unorthodox Ways To Upgrade Your Health - With Ian Clark
Nutrition isn't just about what you eat. Sure, the food you eat gives you nourishment, but the things you drink, the things you put on your skin, the sunlight you receive, the movement you engage in, and many other factors all add to how you "feed" yourself on a daily basis. Recently we've discovered in science that one of the the most critical nutrients for human health is bioavailable magnesium. We've also discovered that the best way to get it is not by eating common foods or oral supplementation. Magnesium is responsible for over 300 biochemical processes within the human body. That means that there are over 300 things that your body can't do, or can't do sufficiently, when you're deficient in this key mineral. The big problem is, upwards of 80 percent of the population is deficient in magnesium. And, according to our guest, upwards of 100 percent of people are deficient if they are not actively doing things to get their magnesium levels up. Our guest today is Ian Clark, and he is one of the foremost experts in the world on magnesium, as well as many other things that create optimal health for the human body. Ian has impacted my life personally in a powerful way. Since the very first time I used the magnesium product he pioneered many years ago, I've been using it almost every day since. It travels with me, it's by my bedside, and it has given me noticeable benefits that I would rather not live without :). Today you're going to learn the inside scoop about magnesium supplementation, and it just might surprise you like it did me so many years ago. You're also going to learn about a superfood that might possibly be the most potent, complete source of nutrition in the world. Let's go! In this episode you'll discover: Why understanding epigenetics is the real key to avoiding chronic illnesses. Why magnesium might be the most important mineral for your health. What incredible functions magnesium has in your body. How ATP - the energy currency of the human body - relies on magnesium. What problems may arise by taking oral magnesium supplements (you need to know this!) Why magnesium is so important for great sleep quality. The shocking facts about marine phytoplankton. The surprising nutrient profile found in marine phytoplankton. Why I don't use a multivitamin. How Oceans Alive marine phytoplankton is actually ALIVE. Ep 108TMHS 108: How To Follow Through On Your Goals, Create Your Perfect Day, And LIVE IT - With Jairek Robbins
Knowledge is not power. Though we've been inundated with the idea that knowledge is power, it's simply not true. What good is knowledge if we don't use it? The knowledge we acquire through our life experiences, through education, through study and introspection, have all the potential power in the world. But, it's just that, potential power, until you decide to do something with it. When knowledge is applied, that's when change can happen. That's when the metaphorical mountains can be moved. That's when life as we know it is changed. So, from this day forward you'll know that knowledge APPLIED is power, and taking action on the things you've learned is the key to having the results you truly want. To help anchor this in, and to help all of us become skilled at applying the things we learn, we brought on the phenomenal Jairek Robbins. Jairek is a bestselling author and success coach who has been fortunate enough to take a masterclass on being surrounded by a lot of knowledge, but not doing anything with it. He's learned what holds himself and the rest of us back from doing the things necessary to get the results we want in our lives. Get ready because the tips and insights he's sharing today are absolutely game-changing. In this episode you'll discover: What the 33 percent rule is and how it can revolutionize your relationships. Ep 106TMHS 106: Use Smart Paleo Principles To Instantly Boost Your Productivity
Peter Block said, "Why do anything if it is not going to be great?" Each and every day, many of us wake up, going through the motions, and have unknowingly selected a life of mediocrity. Getting to (and through) the things we want in our life is a product of knowing how to manage ourselves. It's not about managing time. Time is just going to happen... You can't do anything about time. You can't "manage" it. But, what you can do is manage yourself, and by doing so you'll get more done than you ever thought possible. That's what this episode is all about. If you want a great life, you're going to need to accomplish more than you are right now. It's the nature of the world we live in. Getting things done, being productive, it's the language of success in the environment we are a part of. Though we are living in new times, it's actually the past where you'll find the greatest tools to utilize your mind, body, and energy to achieve more than you ever have. Your paleolithic ancestors had a few things mastered that we have appeared to lose sight of. Your brain, even though it can operate a smart phone at the speed of light, is not much different (if at all) than your paleo relatives. Some of the most powerful things you're about to learn are how to leverage the way your brain is actually wired up, how to put successful activities on automatic, and how to eliminate the distractions that trip so many of us up. After listening, remember that you can get access to the video and slides from this episode, plus my productivity checklist right here. This episode was inspired by my recent presentation at Paleo f(x), so I hope you enjoy it and takeaway lots of value to create better days and a better life from this day forward. In this episode you'll discover: Why being highly productive is so difficult in our world today. The #1 thing you need to do starting RIGHT NOW to radically increase your productivity. Why specialization was once critical to the survival of humanity. How myelin in your brain works to make you more or less efficient. The shocking truth about multitasking. How to utilize chunking to improve the way your brain works to get more done. How to get more done in your day by working LESS. What practice great athletes to great surgeons use to improve their results. How repetition actually works to strengthen your brain. Why rest and recreation is so important to productivity. What major differences in stress our ancestors had from what we experience today (this is powerful!) What one of the core causes of anxiety is. What your overall stress load consists of. How to decrease your stress hormones by 20 percent in less than two minutes. How to make your work look and feel more like play. Why sleep is such a huge determinant of your productivity. Why you might want to reconsider breakfast if you want to perform at a higher level. 4 tips to help you get the most out of intermittent fasting. Ep 105TMHS 105: Uncover The Perfect Workout For Yourself, Build Confidence, And Be Awesome - With Chalene Johnson
Confidence is everything. Confidence is the sole underpinning of every action we take in our lives. Truly, we wouldn't do anything if we didn't believe, even a little bit, that we will succeed in making it happen. Confidence does not mean that you don't have fear. This is the big mistake that trips most people up. Fear is natural. Fear is normal. Fear is actually the foundation on which incredible confidence can be built. Without fear we may not take something seriously and truly prepare. Without confidence there is no action at all. If anyone knows a thing or two about building confidence, it's New York Times bestselling author Chalene Johnson. She's built an empire from the ground up, in multiple highly competitive industries, looking fear in the face the whole way. Today she's here to share her most powerful secrets for building your self-confidence and self-love. Some of these tips may surprise you, but you definitely can't argue with the results. She is also going to share a powerful exercise that will help you figure out the perfect workout for yourself. When I did the exercise I was surprised what came up, but it put a huge smile on my face and lots of excitement because it made perfect sense. Chalene is a phenomenon, and I'm truly honored to be able to share this with you. But, remember, the tips don't work unless you work it. So, take action on what you learn so that you can see the results firsthand for yourself! In this episode you'll discover: What the word "holistic" really means. What success really looks like "behind the scenes". How Chalene took action to solve a problem in the fitness industry. What a "Soulmate Workout" is and how to find yours. How your perception determines whether exercise is a punishment or reward. Why Chalene doesn't diet down for exercise videos. Why you might want to research before you choose a workout. A powerful exercise to connect with the fitness that fits you. Why self-love is more critical than people realize. How to break away from negative self-talk. Why your brain is hardwired to look for problems. How to build your self-confidence (and how it can go wrong!). Ep 104TMHS 104: How To Increase Your Health And Happiness Thermostat - With Gretchen Rubin
There's a wonderful quote from James Openheim that says, "The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance; the wise grows it under his feet." This statement speaks to the reality that many of us live in in which we constantly seek happiness "someday" once our prerequisites for happiness are met. Once I get the right job I'll be happy. Once I get the right partner I'll be happy. Once I graduate I'll be happy. Once I make more money I'll be happy. Once I start a family I'll be happy. Once my kids are grown and successful I'll be happy. Once I retire I'll be happy. These are just some of the things that we'll tell ourselves (often unconsciously) that set the thermostat for exactly how happy we'll be in our day-to-day lives. The harsh reality is this: None of these things will intrinsically bring you happiness, and ALL of these things come along with issues, challenges, and conditions of their own that will likely cause you to push happiness off, yet again, to the future. If your emotional state is always based on your circumstances, life has an interesting way of pushing things off and continuing to dangle the happiness carrot in front of your face, even when you get what you think you really wanted. Bottomline, happiness is a choice, a practice, and moldable system within itself. It's a feeling you always have access to. And there are certain things you can do in your life, starting now, to boost the level of your happiness thermostat. Today you're going to hear from Gretchen Rubin, author of the New York Times bestselling book The Happiness Project. She's made happiness a study, and it's paying off big time for people young, old, and everywhere in between. You can be happier now, and she's going to share the proven tips to help you do it. But why does boosting our level of happiness matter anyway? Well, according to the research, happier people tend to be more successful, they tend to have better relationships, they tend to have better health and fitness, and they tend to be of greater service in their communities and the world at large. To make it simple, it's just a little bit easier to take action in our lives when we have a happy disposition. It's not true in 100 percent of the situations in our lives, but feeling good definitely gives us an edge. Abraham Lincoln said, "Most folks are as happy as they make up their minds to be." It's time for you to take the power of your own happiness in your hands and truly enjoy the health and happiness you deserve. In this episode you'll discover: Why health and happiness are intimately connected. How we can get a surprising boost of joy from clearing out clutter. How utilizing the sense of smell can instantly boost happiness. Why sleep deprivation can be a big trigger for negative emotions. How your body can get a "second wind" of energy even when you're tired. Whether or not your level of happiness is genetic. Why negative emotions are extremely important for happiness (if you use them correctly!) How happiness relates to contribution. How novelty and new challenges can impact your happiness. What you can do to push through barriers you're faced with on your road to happiness. How structuring your day a certain way can bring you more happiness. Why playtime is vital to your health. Whether or not money can actually buy happiness (this may surprise you!) Items mentioned in this episode include: Onnit.com/Model <== Get your optimal health & performance supplements at 10% off! Ep 103TMHS 103: How To Develop Mental And Emotional Fitness
The formula for fitness is pretty simple: Eat good food + Get plenty of movement + Sleep like you're getting paid for it = The body and health you desire Of course, there can be some more variables thrown in the mix, like hormones and environmental toxicity, but for the most part it's as simple as this. Being that it's so simple, why is it that so many people are struggling to have the body and health that they want? It's not complicated to have what we want at first glance... but what makes it complicated is something far more mighty than the power of food or exercise. What trumps everything is the power of your mind. It's the inner game that determines your outer game. It's your mental and emotional fitness that truly determines your outer health and fitness. This is where the real shifts need to happen. And that's what today's show is all about. If we're going to live a great life, then we can't just stop at the acquisition of a great body. What about phenomenal relationships? What about a satisfying career? What about abundant finances and resources to do the things you want in your life? All of this matters. And all of this is a result of developing the real mental and emotional fitness to make it happen. You can have, do and be practically anything you want. It starts right now by using these strategies to live the life you truly deserve! In this episode you'll discover: Why the formula for having great health is simple, yet most people can't do it. Why the negative voice in your head can actually teach you a lot. How simply moving forward can create huge momentum for you. Why doing things beyond the edge of your capability is so transformative. How looking back on your life can be extremely beneficial OR extremely depressing. How to instantly shift the perception about your past and make it more valuable. How to get decades of experience in just a matter of days. What some of the most successful people in the world do that others are afraid of. What surprising thing our brains do automatically when we're talking with other people (this is incredible!) How cells found in the human heart can tell us a lot about our emotional wellness. Ep 102TMHS 102: Creating Unstoppable Success And The Miracle Morning - With Hal Elrod
There are four words in the human language that are destroying people's lives everyday. To realize what these four words are, we have to first realize that we are not a victim of our circumstances, but rather a victim of our own beliefs that are playing havoc in our minds. One of the biggest issues with achieving what we want is a misdirected self-confidence. There is a big difference between a healthy self-assuredness and being closed-minded to something that could change your life. Those four extremely dangerous words in the human language are: "I already know that." The insight about these four dangerous words was one of the most powerful things that bestselling author and renown Success Coach Hal Elrod said to me during our conversation. He's speaking of a universal truth that all of us can ignore from time-to-time. When we feel like we've already mastered something, or that we've "got it handled", or that it's old news and not what we need, we immediately shut ourselves off from the possibility of new growth and success. The reality is, we may think we already know something, but if we're not applying it in our lives then it's really just a theory. It's not something we truly know. Knowledge is not power. The application of knowledge is power. So today you're going to learn how to apply the things you want on a consistent basis to lead you to the life you truly deserve. Hal is an amazing teacher with an amazing story, and knows firsthand the value of having a daily strategy for success and consistent execution. This can be a real game-changer to say the least. So, grab a notebook, listen in, and find out how creating miracle days begins with creating Miracles Mornings. In this episode you'll discover: How challenges and setbacks can lead to better results in your life. Why getting your shoes from Payless can eventually make you rich. How Hal survived a devastating car accident where he was pronounced dead for 6 minutes. How Hal's attitude in the hospital enabled him to walk again when the doctors said it was not going to happen. What the "5-Minute Rule" is and why it's so effective for getting through challenges. How acceptance of what is can unlock the door to success and happiness. Why you must line up your LC (Life Conditions) and BP (BluePrint) for true life fulfillment. What exercise has to do with success in business and other areas of life. What The Miracle Morning is and how to create your own each day. What the 6 Life SAVERS are. Why some of the most surprising financial success icons attribute their results to meditation. Ep 101THMS 101: Natural Treatments For Asthma And How To Reset Your Immune System
It's called a medical paradox.... According to Harvard Medical School, despite an ever growing arsenal of powerful drugs and a deeper understanding of asthma symptoms, more people are dying from the disease than ever. It's depressing effects hit hardest in the millions of children that are living with asthma. There are over 7 million children with asthma in the U.S. alone, and that number is growing steadily each day. Einstein said, "We can not solve our problems with the same level of thinking that created them." So, to find a real solution for asthma, we have to step outside the conventional paradigm that is (admittedly) failing anyway. There are numerous natural treatments for asthma that are proven to be effective, but you may never hear about them if you don't know the right place to look. We are moving past the isolation-based thinking of finding more treatments for asthma symptoms and, instead, working intelligently to remove the underlying cause of the disease itself. That's what today's powerhouse episode is all about. We're talking eliminating inflammation, reseting your immune system, plus a whole lot more. This one can save lives and eliminate a whole lot of emergency room visits, so please remember to share! In this episode you'll discover: Shocking statistics about the rapid growth of asthma. Why conventional medicine is baffled by the growth of asthma-related deaths. What an asthma attack looks and feels like. What primary triggers cause the nervous system to generate asthma symptoms. How I overcame my struggles with asthma and seasonal hay fever. What the main cause of asthma really is. How immune system function is directly related to asthma symptoms. The 5 steps to reverse and treat asthma naturally. How food allergies and food sensitivities are linked to asthma. What The Big 4 Culprits behind food allergies are. Shocking research showing that a certain type of milk can help reduce asthma issues. What environmental factors can trigger asthma symptoms. Ep 98TMHS 098: Developing A Champion's Mindset, Winning Gold, And Staying Fit For A Lifetime - With Jackie Joyner-Kersee
There is a quote from Robert Fritz that says, "If you limit your choices only to what seems possible or reasonable, you disconnect yourself from what you truly want, and all that is left is compromise." Most of us are living a life of compromise. We may desire deeply to get out of it, but often times we just don't know how. Focusing on what seems "possible" for you is the most guaranteed way to live a life of mediocrity. But, if you're honest with yourself, and look deep inside your soul, you'll remember that you were destined for something much greater. I promise you, you're never too old, or too young, to start. You are never lacking the resources to make your dreams come true. Yet, you may be lacking something else. And that's what today's show is about. On this episode we have on gold-medal winning Olympian Jackie Joyner-Kersee. Not only was Jackie voted by Sports Illustrated (and many other publications) to be the greatest female athlete of the 20th century, but she helped shift the minds of an entire generation by the way she did it. Jackie is, in many ways, the epitome of breaking through what seems to be possible or reasonable. Her story, as you'll learn, is ripe with difficulties, poor conditions, and often insurmountable odds. To learn the insights from someone like Jackie is truly priceless, and a gift for us all. You're about to learn how she was able to breakthrough and tap into her potential, and (more importantly) how you'll be able to do the same thing. In this episode you'll discover: How one of the greatest athletes in history responded to finishing dead last in her early competitions. Why having a good mentor doesn't mean having someone who will agree with you. Who inspired Jackie to excel and what drove her to attend UCLA. Why having a healthy confidence is important (but not going overboard). Why positive self-talk is critical to high levels of success. How you can learn valuable lessons from the failures in your life. Why you should always shoot for a goal BEYOND what you want. How to maintain your health and fitness as you progress in age. Why looking at exercise as a form of punishment (like many people do) is a huge barrier to success. A major reason people are not exercising regularly (we are calling people out!) Some of the surprising benefits of walking. Why resourcefulness is far more valuable than having certain resources. How storytelling can help to motivate and transform the lives of so many people. Ep 97TMHS 097: A Day In The Life Of Shawn - Health, Work, Family, And Fat Loss
There is a wonderful quote that says, "People will judge you by your actions, not your intentions. You may have a heart of gold — but so does a hard-boiled egg." It's the things that we do, not our wishful thinking, that makes the biggest difference in the lives of those around us and the world at large. This motivated me to take you into my world and show you what I do, step-by-step, on a daily basis. In this powerful episode, I'll take you through my morning routine, my work week, and even a tour of how my exercise and nutrition are mapped out during the day. One of the biggest things you'll discover is that, for my work week, I do something called "chunking" to super-charge my focus, keep my energy high, and get more done in a day than most people get done in a week. To give you a quick example, there was a time when I would be working from 8am to 8 pm going from writing an important article, to seeing a few clients, to giving a presentation somewhere, to writing some more later in the day. All the while trying to maintain my nutrition and exercise habits. It was a stressful time to say the least. I constantly had to shift gears in my mind to be in an optimal place for many different things. I could do it. But I definitely could have done things better. Today, because I've made the decision to cut away a lot of the clutter and "chuck" my time into specific things on specific days, I'm able to "get in the zone" on a consistent, daily basis and accomplish much more than I ever have before. Time for work, creating, teaching, exercise, family time, and even my favorite activities are all done with ease and grace. You're about to learn how I do it, plus the powerful daily rituals I use to set the template for it all. In this episode you'll discover: How creating certain habits can make it difficult to get out of shape. Why habits generally have a negative connotation. What time I start my day (and how it relates to my kids and being of service to the world). Why it's important to take an "inner bath" each morning. When to take your probiotics (the best time of day and why). How to ensure that you're regularly eliminating wastes from your body. Why meditation is so valuable. What my meditation practice consists of. Why so many people struggle to breathe properly and simple breathing exercises you can use. How your facial expression can change your mood. The real value that visualization has on your life. Why exercising in the morning can help you sleep better at night. What the benefits of contrast showers are (this is super valuable!) What the best breakfast for fat loss and energy is. Why "sleeping in" can cause problems with your energy and motivation. How to optimize things with your pre- and post-workout nutrition. Ep 96TMHS 096: Fasting, Feasting, And The Wild Diet - With Abel James
All diets are not created equal. Every day, billions of people all over the world are partaking in one form of diet or another. Many out of conscious effort. Many out of necessity. No matter what your particular diet beliefs are, there are some specific tenets that are now well known to contribute to the health and function of the human body. If food and diet were as simple as getting certain vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, and other nutrients, then someone would have come up with an effective pill for that a long time ago. But that's not the real story of diet and food. Food is something far beyond the nutrients (or lack thereof) that you are getting from it. Real food, itself, is a source of infinite intelligence that knows how to interact with the human body in a way that no pill never can. Even deeper, food is about family, food is about emotion, food is about relationships, foods is about social acceptance. If you want to know the real value of diet and food, then Abel James is the man to talk to. On today's episode we are going to dive into the misconceptions surrounding diets, and hone in on what is truly important. We are going to uncover what The Wild Diet really is, and why it's important to have at least a portion of your own daily diet be on the wild side. In this episode you'll discover: What immunomodulators are (and why you need them). How healthy, thin people are able to feast and not get fat (keyword is healthy!) A quick, easy win almost anyone can achieve at breakfast time. How fasting impacts your metabolism (this might shock you!) Why health and nutrition is actually a lot easier than people think. What sneaky marketing tactics food companies use to promote foods as "healthy" (I guarantee you've been a victim of this.) How to create your dinner plate using The Wild Diet principles. Why plant foods are so very important in your diet. Simple tips to ensure you're eating healthier food more often. Ep 95TMHS 095: Lose The Wheat, Lose The Weight - Wheat Belly With Dr. William Davis
How can something so soft, so comforting, and so unsuspecting be the cause of many of the health problems running rampant in our society today? And if our ancestors ate bread, and built civilizations on it without consequence, then how can it be bad for us now? All of these questions and more are about to be answered in this interview with the author of the #1 New York Times Bestselling book Wheat Belly, Dr. William Davis. Wheat, though a staple in our modern life, has grown in use and variation without assumption. Wheat has gone "Hollywood" and expanded out from the bread game into thousands of cereals, every baked good imaginable (I was a fan of Wheat's appearance in the Hostess Ding Dong myself), and countless other items have featured wheat in a supporting roll (like medications, beauty products, and even supplements, just to name a few). Truly, wheat is everywhere. So, when did wheat begin showing signs that its ego got too big and it was now causing massive harm? Well, the research dates as far back as 10,000 years when the birthing of agriculture took hold. Humans began staying in one place, monocropping (mainly wheat), and genetic manipulation of wheat first peeks out its lightly toasted face. With this shift to monocropping and agriculture came startling evidence in human remains. More degenerative bone diseases, a smaller physical stature, as well as evidence of other chronic illnesses like cancer were on the rise. Now, things were still not nearly as volatile as today because whole foods were still the basis of the diet. Unlike the heavily processed frankenfoods of today. You wouldn't have seen a Cinnabon, a box of Frosted Mini-Wheats, or a double-stuffed crust deep dish pizza anywhere in sight. Wheat has gone from a bit of a problem, to a flat out flagrant food pyramid bully. You're going to be shocked when you find out just how wheat is contributing to weight gain, hormone problems, and even autoimmune diseases. Today you're going to learn important information that will likely change your life forever. Time to find out how to rise above the Wheat Belly, supercharge your energy, and live a longer, healthier life. In this episode you'll discover: What the #1 antioxidant food is (by a long shot!) How healthcare has turned diseases into profit and procedure opportunities. What originally compelled Dr. William Davis to pull wheat out of his patient's diets. How a non-celiac patient completed cured her ulcerative colitis by following Dr. Davis' advice. What type of relationship you should have with your doctor (this is critical!) How high blood sugar can lead to a myriad of diseases. How a protein found in wheat called gliadin can lead to autoimmune diseases. What compounds found in wheat amplify your appetite and cause you to overeat. How wheat germ agglutinin can block the function of your satiety hormone leptin. Where the term obesogens come from (the perfect foods to make you fat). Why wheat can make you store fat faster than pure table sugar (this is shocking!) Why learned helplessness can prevent you from losing weight no matter what you do. How modern day wheat has been mutated (this is NOT what your ancestors ate!) How wheat helps create extremely inflammatory visceral fat. Why wheat and related grains can lead to estrogen-related health problems (from fibroid tumors to man-boobs). Why kicking the wheat habit can lead to drug-like withdrawal symptoms. How you can quickly reverse health issues by following a few simple Wheat Belly tips. How gluten-free foods can make you just as fat and unhealthy as their gluten containing big brothers. Why 90 percent of the population is experiencing gut damage from wheat and don't even know it. Ep 94TMHS 094: Sugar Addiction, Estrogen Dominance, And The Hormone Reset Diet - With Dr. Sara Gottfried
A statement that Dr. Sara Gottfried made at the end of this episode sent powerful chills right down my spine. Ep 91THMS 091: Conquering Diabesity - Natural Solutions For Diabetes And The Obesity Epidemic
A new term has been coined to demonstrate the parallel line between diabetes and obesity. Diabesity is the realization that diabetes and obesity go together like peanut butter and jelly, like spaghetti and meatballs, or like Doritos and chili cheese dogs (if you grew up like I did). The real underlying issue is that obesity and being dangerously overweight has become a societal norm. You will be shocked and a little disturbed when you find out what the statistics are today. But, more so, you're going to be driven like never before to not have your name listed in the ranks of people who are stricken with diabesity. This condition has become a societal norm because, as Dr. Francine Kaufman says, "Our ancient genes and our modern environment have collided." You can not go more than a couple miles in this country and not see a chain of fast food restaurants, we are bombarded by chemicals in our food, water, and air supply, and we are more overworked and under-rested than at any other point in human history. What we are seeing now is a result of our collective decisions, but this can all change starting now. Today you're going to learn the ins and outs of how diabetes is created, how it's reversed, and how to prevent it from happening in the first place. You're also going to learn EXACTLY how body fat gets created in a way that you've never heard before. In particular, we're going to focus on that especially troublesome fat that accumulates in the midsection, so that you can finally take control of the Battle of the Bulge. Plus, a little bonus with today's episode. To celebrate surpassing over 1 million downloads, I'm giving away several gift packs of Onnit foods and supplements. All you have to do to enter yourself is 1) Follow me on Instagram right here and 2) Tag me in a photo of where you're listening to the show. I'll be selecting a few winners all this week! We've got so many powerful and exciting episodes coming up for you. It kicks off today with this masterclass on reversing diabetes, eradicating obesity, and taking back control of your health. In this episode you'll discover: What diabesity is and where it originated. What the symptoms of diabesity are (you can look down now and see if you have it!) How the rates of diabetes have changed in the last 100+ years (this will shock you!) What blood test you want to get when monitoring systemic inflammation and potential blood sugar problems. How diabetes is actually created (the step-by-step process - this is powerful!) What insulin really is and how it works. The specific tissues that are most responsive to insulin (this can mean life or death...) Why storing unwanted fat is actually a very healthy response of your body. The surprising impact that whole grains have on your blood sugar. How your amazing liver assists in managing healthy blood sugar levels. What the different types of body fat are and how they work. Why women and men store fat differently. How genetics relates to diabetes and obesity (the good, bad, and the ugly!) Why statin drugs increase diabetes risk. The 8 steps to completely reverse diabetes and obesity-related symptoms. What category of foods will help your leptin sensitivity and control your appetite. Ep 90TMHS 090: Defeat Stress, Deepen Relationships, And Master Your Mindset - With Prince Ea
Benjamin Franklin made a powerful statement when he said, “There are three things extremely hard: steel, a diamond, and to know one’s self.” Consistent happiness, success, health, deeper relationships, and an empowered mindset are all predicated on your ability to know who you truly are and what you're about. Your success is going to be dependent on your ability to connect with the people and the world around you. But the question is, if you don't understand yourself, how can you expect to truly understand anyone else? Most of us have been programmed (by default) to pursue success somewhere outside of ourselves. We have lost sight of the fact that happiness and success is an inside game. Your ability to master your own mind and perception of reality is the key to seeing the results you want in the world around you. Here's the catch... Benjamin Franklin noted that this is not for the weakhearted. It can be very hard work. Yet, the rewards are bigger and better than anything you've ever imagined. So, whether you're all about the Benjamins or not, listen closely because you're about to get a first class ticket back to the most important person on the planet: Y-O-U. Today we have a very special episode with music artist and thought leader, Prince Ea. He has recently gained worldwide recognition for his powerful spoken word pieces highlighting how we can live with less stress, more happiness, and bigger overall success by following some basic principles that have been around for thousands of years. The way that he packages up and delivers the information are second to none. And what's more powerful is that it doesn't have to be as challenging as you may think to achieve the happiness and self-awareness that has eluded so many people over the centuries. It's never been a matter of "can you do it," it's really a matter of whether or not you have the right strategy in your hands. One idea, just one idea, can dramatically change the quality of your life. The only question is, do you have the heart to take action for yourself to make it happen? My guess is (if you've made it this far) the answer is a resounding yes! So, just click play, get ready, and let the transformation begin. In this episode you'll discover: How great historical figures like Lao Tzu and Buddha relate to hip-hop artist today. How life is actually qualifying you for the things you'll be faced with. Why your perspective is so powerful in influencing your thoughts and actions. The #1 tactic you can use to deal with the haters in your life. What often stops people from pursuing the things they're passionate about. The huge difference between compassion and sympathy. How labeling things inherently creates conflict in our lives. How I first became interested in meditation (you might laugh at this :)). Why technology can prevent the creation of meaningful relationships. What little technology guideline I use to keep my family connected. How health and fitness relates to our mental and spiritual health. What 3 step process you can use to instantly defeat stress. Ep 89TMHS 089: 180 Pound Weight Loss And The Ketogenic Diet - With Jimmy Moore
It's pretty astonishing when you see the before and after picture of an individual who's had the resolve to lose 80, 90, or even 100+ pounds. It's truly an act that puts them in a fraction of a fraction of the population who's been able to accomplish a feat like that. If they accomplished this naturally (without the use of drugs and surgery), you will often find that these individuals carry a secret that many people never hear about. Sure, they've "worked off" a lot of pounds by the decisions they've made in the kitchen and in the gym, but there was something more profound at work. If you were able to talk with them before and after the weight loss, you'd find out very quickly that, yes, they look different - but they are literally not the same person. The way they talk is different, their perception about reality is different, the way they carry themselves and relate to the world is often totally different. They changed who they are; not just what they do. The real secret is: Weight loss must never be the intended target. Getting fixated on weight loss will often lead to a series of ups and downs, and a whole distaste for the idea of shedding pounds in the first place. So, what should the real focus be? If not obsessing over the numbers staring back at you on the scale, what should the intended target be so that you will actually arrive at the health and beauty you deserve? The intended target must be on becoming the type of person that you need to become to have the health and body that you really want. Health is not something you chase after in hopes that you will capture it one day. Health is something that you attract to yourself by the person that you become. This is where the real work is, because the scale will look you right in the face and not tell you the whole truth. Now, how do we do a show talking about a 180-pound weight loss when we don't want the focus to be on weight loss? Well, it's pretty easy when you have on a guy like Jimmy Moore. He's a humble leader (probably too humble to say that he's a leader), and someone who knows where the path of weight loss tactics and self-perception intercept. He's one of the most gifted people in compiling and sharing health-related information that I've ever met. But, he'll be fast to tell you that he's not perfect. He's accomplished astonishing feats of weight loss several times, and he's arrived at a place that's truly inspirational because he now knows that it's never been the most important thing. The most important thing is that you are happy. That you are happy, grateful, and proud of who you are right now. Only that can be a catalyst for long-term happiness and health. Even though you're going to learn some wonderful tactics for physical transformation today, what it's really about is having the audacity to take responsibility for your life. Only you have the power to change the course and direction of how your life unfolds. It begins by taking full and complete responsibility for your life, dropping the blame and excuses, and knowing that you have the power to change at any moment that you choose. In this episode you'll discover: How our health practices as an adult get programmed at a very young age. What controversial book helped Jimmy lose 180 pounds (unbelievable!!!) The truth about low-fat diets and the interesting side effects they have. Why dietary fat is so important. What ketosis is and how it happens. The big mistake that can happen on the Atkins' Diet that causes people to regain weight. How something called "gluconeogenesis" can stop you from becoming a fat-burner. Why you need to find your unique "carb tolerance" and "protein threshold". What type of carbs trigger fat storage. A secret about fat-soluble vitamins most people overlook. What types of "healthy fats" you should be eating. What type of olive oil you should NEVER use. The healthiest nuts that you may not know about. Ep 88TMHS 088: Simple Ways To Boost Your Happiness Hormones And The Food-Mood Connection - With Evan Brand
There's a wonderful old quote that says, "Don't put the key to your happiness in someone else's pocket." It's one of the grave mistakes we make as human beings to believe that it's up to someone else to make us happy - or that someone else even can for that matter. Our significant others, friends, and family members don't have some magical pixy dust that they sprinkle on us to make us feel some type of way. How we truly feel, how we experience the emotions of happiness, are due to our own biochemistry, and our own perception of reality. You see, when you feel good, that's you, your brain, and endocrine system releasing hormones and neurotransmitters that make you feel that way. No pixy dust. These are chemicals that YOU produced. Not to negate that our loved ones and the world around us can influence how we feel. It's absolutely true that they can. But, it's because we allow them to. It's your own innate perception that decides whether or not the people/conditions in your life will make you happy or otherwise. Your happiness, is, and always will be, depended on your perception. You can literally program your mind to think that every time it rains it's a joyous occasion. It's cause for celebration! Many ancient cultures have seen it that way. However, most of us unknowingly built a belief that the rain is slightly depressing, a hinderance, or even something we'd rather avoid all together. The truth is, there are no flowers without the rain. So, we can choose to see the good that the rain brings and instantly up our levels of happiness. Or, we can decide that the rain is a problem and your biochemistry will respond accordingly. Is it really that simple to experience more happiness by changing our perception? Well, yes and no. Most of our core beliefs are very hardwired into our nervous system and endocrine system. Your brain doesn't want you to "decide" how you feel about every-little-thing that shows up in your life. It wants to put as many things as it can on automatic so that it can free up space for something new. Your brain is always hungry to grow. This said, to change some of our more deeply ingrained beliefs, it takes practice, repetition, and/or a very emotionally charged event. These things help to create a new neuropathway, and weaken the old neuropathway that had become our default. This can take some work, but it simply starts with the awareness that you CAN change, that you CAN be happy, and that you CAN have more influence over your happiness if you make the decision to. There are several things that you can do to immediately shift how your brain is operating and boost your happiness hormones. Today we have special guest, Evan Brand, on to help us understand how this all works and to provide us with some great strategies for feeling more joy and happiness in our lives right away. We are also covering the food-mood connection, and how diet plays into this whole equation. So tune in, get focused, and let's have some fun! In this episode you'll discover: What a diagnosis of IBS really means and why conventional treatments often fail. Why the standard pre-game food for athletes needs to be changed. One of the major ways that your diet can affect your mood. How your attitude, stress, and mood inherently impact your food choices. How sharp increases in blood sugar lead to eating MORE sugar. What your overall "stress load" is and why it's important. Why having a great body will be unfulfilling without this secret ingredient. How human contact and intimacy can instantly boost your happiness hormones. Why humans have a limited ability to see energy and how that affects our interactions. What your "life wheel" is and how it can help identify imbalances in your life. How stress can actually be beneficial to you. Simple practices you can use to reframe stress and make it positive. What shinrin-yoku is and how it can transform your health. A cool trick to add beneficial essential oils into your family's daily life (thanks Jade!) How to super-charge your nervous system so that stress never breaks you down. Ep 86TMHS 086: How To Create A Sleep Sanctuary And Get The Best Sleep Ever
We spend approximately 1/3 of our entire lives in a bedroom. That's a long time to be anywhere... This is what makes your bedroom such a special place. And the environment in this room, whether you realize it or not, has a huge impact on your health and longevity. How can a room actually dictate your health? To put it simply, humans are a direct product of their environment. Our brains are constantly creating and strengthening neuro-associations to the places we are the most (i.e. your bedroom!). This helps to automate our behavior. So, basically your bedroom has you programmed like a robot. That's right, you're sort of like a robot. Not as cool as Terminator 2, but not as clunky as the robot from Short Circuit. In all seriousness, your brain has evolved constantly looking for ways to automate things to free up mental energy. Your bedroom setup will inherently influence your behavior, and if great sleep is a behavior you want to take part in, then listen to this closely. There are certain things you're about to learn that turn the average person's bedroom into a danger zone. The surface experience may be that they're waking up tired each day (how ironic is that to wake up tired?!). But the deeper issues that a dangerous bedroom set up can bring are diabetes, cancer, birth defects, or even SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) and I've got the science to prove it. The good news is, you're also about to learn how to create your very own sleep sanctuary that invigorates your health, adds to your vitality, and helps you to get the best sleep ever. This is because humans aren't just products of our environment, we are also creators of our environment. And with a few simple tweaks you'll be getting the best sleep of your life every night. In this episode you'll discover: How our brains are always trying to automate things. Why humans actually have 3 different brains. What hidden hazards in your bedroom could be causing you hormone problems. The shocking connection between Wi-Fi and autism. The #1 item in most bedrooms that can dramatically depress your sex life. What "light pollution" is and how it affects you. What the ideal room temperature is for the best sleep. How the air quality in your bedroom can become "stagnant". What chemicals are used in the production of your mattress (this is shocking!) How your mattress is impacting the health of your spine. What the #1 wellness mattress is. What the leading cause of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) is. 7 tips to create your own sleep sanctuary. How a simple houseplant can improve your bedroom air quality (NASA proven!) Ep 83TMHS 083: Mastering Your Body And Spreading Positivity Through Movement - With Travis Brewer
The word ninja was once used to designate someone highly trained in martial arts (masked, deadly, and absolutely nothing to do with mutant turtles). Currently, if you look up the definition of ninja, you'll see that it's used in a slightly different way. A ninja in our world today is defined as a person who excels in a particular skill or activity. You can be a ninja at cooking desserts, a ninja at dancing, a ninja at videos games, and the list goes on and on. It's just about having the audacity to develop the skills necessary to be great. That's why I'm here to tell you that you, yes YOU, have the capacity to be an %$#-kicking ninja! What better way to become a ninja than actually learning from a ninja yourself? My guest today is someone who has excelled in numerous skills, and has been able to transform this mastery into many areas of his life as a result. He was actually a semi-finalist on the television show American Ninja Warrior that highlights some of the most elite all-around athletes in the world. And this all happened after he was faced with a devastating injury and thought that his athletic career was over. This episode is not only about becoming the best version of yourself, it's also about overcoming adversity, and utilizing your body in ways that help to empower your mind and emotions. The truth is, we are all capable of so much more than we are achieving right now, but what holds us back are the mental barriers we've put up for ourselves. It's the lack of belief, lack of motivation, and lack of perseverance that usually tell the story of how much we can achieve. But, no more!!! Today we take the necessary steps to learn how to gain more mastery over our bodies so that we can translate that over into more mastery in the other areas of our lives. You see, when you are able to overcome physical obstacles you thought were difficult (if not impossible!) that immediately expands your threshold for what you can overcome in your relationships, finances, career, and more. Gaining more physical health and strength are so important because your body is the vehicle that you move through this life in. If you achieve, create, or experience anything, it's through the amazing body that you have. It's truly a special and sacred relationship. Right now you're about to learn from Travis Brewer, a true ninja warrior himself, on how to become stronger in your body, overcome any obstacle you're faced with, plus a whole lot more. In this episode you'll discover: One of the most potent things you can do when others get sick around you. What type of sugars have incredible healing properties. How a tragedy or physical injury can close one door but open many more. Why you must NEVER STOP TRAINING (so you are ready for when your moment comes). Why learning how to be strong in your body will make you strong mentally and spiritually as well. How keeping a positive mental attitude will help you in your progression. How overcoming physical obstacles translates to overcoming obstacles in our lives. Why children are more open and excited to try new things. Why technique really matters (in sport and in life). 5 essential exercises you can do to gain more control and ability with your body. The best progression exercises to help you do impressive pull-ups! What partner training is and how it can help you improve faster. How to develop powerful pressing ability for push ups and handstands. What the #1 core exercise is (and several variations for it!) What interesting things you can do to improve your grip strength. How to enable yourself to do single-leg squats (aka pistol squats). What the 4 keys are for achieving anything (Travis' 4 P's!) One thing is for certain: you will fall in love in this lifetime. You will be head over heels, you will sacrifice anything, and you will see a beauty that words can't describe. For many of us, we will fall in love many times... But the question is, will you ever fall in love with the most important person of all? Our society has been programmed to think that we are all incomplete. We need a love story with Tom Cruise and Rene Zellwegger to remind us how incomplete we are, and if we just find that special person it'll be alright. The truth is, you always have been, and always will be, the answer you've always needed. You are complete unto yourself. You have a level of perfection that no one else can achieve... because you are a totally unique phenomenon. You deserve to be loved deeply by the most important person of all. --> YOU. Can you do that? Can you honestly say that you love yourself as much as you truly deserve? If not, then this may be one of the most important moments in your life. Today we have on Holistic Health Coach Madelyn Moon. She's a friend and someone I truly admire for her courage to say enough is enough! She has been a high performing fitness competitor and has seen how you can easily lose track of what matters most. She's dieted in a stricter fashion than most people will ever know, all in the name of health. But she found out at the end of the day that it was just a long, painful road to unhappiness. She reassessed things, developed some powerful transformational insights, and now is a shining example of what health can be (in our own unique way). If you live for the love of dieting, exercising, and competing, this in no way makes you wrong. Let's celebrate what we all love, and make sure that we are giving healthy love and respect for ourselves no matter what path we choose. Madelyn has some game-changing information for you today. Ep 81TMHS 081: Tips For Dining Out At Restaurants, Family Get Togethers, And How To Stay Healthy During The Holidays
The word 'restaurant' is derived from the French word restaurer which means to restore. It was originally used in France in the 16th century to describe a thick, inexpensive soup sold by street vendors that were storied to restore your health. Fast forward to today... The word restaurant now means that I'm probably going to end up bloated and questioning why I ate so much. Most of the restaurants in the U.S. are geared towards having a party in your mouth by any means necessary. If that means extra sugar, so be it! Extra trans fats and rancid oils, bring it on! Little bits of nutrition, but big chunks of chemicals, additives, and preservatives, let's go! They want your business, which is fine, but the way they go about doing it is far from the concern of restoring your health. Is this all restaurants? Of course not, but until the recent wave of more health conscious cooking, most restaurants were operating in the nutritional dark ages. Fortunately, today we have access to so many amazing restaurants and various food options. Today's episode is going to help you navigate the world of restaurant dining so that you can go out to eat, have a good time, and feel like fit, sexy beast when you leave there. Speaking of navigating, holiday get togethers can be one of the roughest health terrains to maneuver. Making it through the holidays without packing on the extra pounds would be like seeing a double rainbow, buying a winning lottery ticket, or seeing Flava Flav win Dancing with the Stars. Hey, anything can happen, but it's not very likely! So what do we do when the holiday pies are stacked against us? You're actually going to be surprised at how easy this is if you have the right strategies in your hands. You are going to be able to enjoy the holiday, eat the amazing foods that you love, and still come out looking great at the end. In this episode you'll discover: Why chocolate is actually one of the healthiest foods you can find. 8 healthy tips for dining out at restaurants. What new shift has taken place with restaurants all over the country. How to use the "Pick 3" strategy to eat healthily at restaurants. What beverage mistake can cause you to store more fat during your meal. Why you need to focus on hormones more than calorie consumption. Whether you should or shouldn't consume beverages with your meals. What the best appetizer at a restaurants is. What hormone will help you to feel more satiated during your meal. How to INSTANTLY upgrade the quality of your meals (keep some of these with you!) What digestive supplement I keep with me at all times. The best strategy for dealing with desserts when dining out. The mistake people make when trying to "work off" the food they've eaten. 5 holiday health tips to help you maintain your vitality and fitness. How to defend yourself against overeating later in the day. The very best foods to eat for breakfast. Why self-control may not be the best strategy for making healthy choices during holidays. Ep 80TMHS 080: Protect Your Sex Hormones! 10 Ways To Boost Testosterone Naturally (Essentials For Men's AND Women's Health)
Experts call it “estrogen pollution”. We are living in an era where we are bombarded with estrogenic compounds, and the health effects are extremely disturbing. This is a problem for all of us. Both men and women have estrogen receptors. These receptors are present throughout our entire bodies, from our brains to our reproductive organs. If your body is in balance, then you are producing the correct amount of estrogen endogenously (within yourself) and it’s fitting nice and snug into those receptor sites and life is good. The problem is, our exposure to xenoestrogens (foreign estrogens from outside of yourself) are at an all-time high today. These xenoestrogens can fit right into the receptor sites for estrogen in your body and “turn on” programs that more estrogen will encourage. For men this could mean lowered sex drive, accumulation of fat on the butt and hips, gynecomastia (man-boobs), shrinking of the reproductive organs, and many other red alerts. For women this could lead to estrogen dominance which encourages cancers of the breasts, ovaries, and other reproductive organs, fibroid tumors, depression, decreased sex drive, and very difficult to get-rid-of body fat. How is all of this possible with just one hormone being off? Well, it’s because your hormones control EVERYTHING about your physiology and how every cell in your body communicates with each other. It’s a pretty important role, and if just one set of hormones is off, then every other hormone will be out-of-sync accordingly. In steps testosterone. Testosterone is commonly known as the “male hormone”, but that description is far too general. Every human being on the planet is dependent upon the proper function of testosterone. Yes, women have a lower percentage of testosterone than men, but it’s critical for many of the essential processes in a woman’s life. You’re going to learn about all of them today. To help yourself be the strongest, fittest, healthiest, happiest person you can possibly be, then you’ve got to understand the role of testosterone and how to avoid exposure to the xenoestrogens we’re subjected to in our world today. Today you’re going to learn how to boost testosterone naturally, protect yourself from dysfunctions with your sex hormones, and a whole lot more. In this episode you’ll discover: Why there’s a “testosterone crisis” today. Where testosterone is produced in the body (male vs. female). How testosterone impacts a developing fetus (this is incredible!) What testosterone is responsible for in your body. How your sex hormones impact your personality. How testosterone actually gets created in your body. What Leydig Cells are and why they’re important. The dangerous (and scary) side effects of having low testosterone. Common things that can lower your testosterone levels. How a vasectomy can impact testosterone levels. The shocking relationship between cholesterol and your sex hormones. How aromatization can steal your precious testosterone. 5 supplements that can block aromatization. Why dietary fat is critical to testosterone production (and your overall health). How bottled water could be increasing your estrogen levels. What foods and food additives can disrupt your sex hormones. 8 natural testosterone boosting supplements (this is a must know info!) How selenium can improve hormone function and protect against cancer. 10 ways to naturally boost your testosterone! What form of exercise is proven to boost your testosterone level. Whether or not sex will raise or lower your testosterone (in men and women). How to boost your testosterone by 20% in just two minutes (do this now!)
