I know, right now we are all consumed with the impact the coronavirus is having on our lives. As of noon today, April 27, the U.S. has lost at least 55,551 lives to this pandemic. Thousands of lives lost, families disrupted by grief and uncertainty. Millions out of work. Jobs lost, some to return, but many, perhaps not as some businesses won’t survive. Schools shut down. Hospitals overrun in some areas. People frustrated with stay-at-home orders, and some states reopening, perhaps too soon. Let’s hope not.So there hasn’t been much talk about what comes next. But we should be thinking about that, because I firmly believe Republicans will suddenly decide that the more than $3 trillion that’s been spent so far must be recouped. It was amazing to me that when the coronavirus outbreak became big time news in the United States, that the cruise ship industry kept on cruising. I could hardly believe it when I read that Mitch McConnell, Donald Trump’s pal who runs the United States Senate, said that instead of the federal government providing assistance to states struggling financially from the coronavirus, they should just declare bankruptcy.To me, that was just an incredible statement. And then, he intimated that because most of those states are led by Democratic governors, somehow that is the problem. Last week, the Trump administration announced a new plan to gradually open up the nation, reacting to pressure on the economy with a phased approach to opening parts of the country where the coronavirus is being brought under control. Trump told the governors it was up to them to decide what to do and when, a step that would let him off the hook if the virus resurfaces and more people die as a result. On the day he announced the plan, 5.2 million more Americans applied for unemployment benefits, bringing the four-week total to 22 million – the worst stretch of job losses in U.S. history. Meanwhile, numerous governors and business leaders have warned that more testing and protective gear are needed before they can start lifting lockdowns and other restrictions. And the number of cases and deaths keep mounting. As of Noon today, Sunday, April 19, there were 742,637 cases in the U.S. with 39,201 deaths. President Trump, of course, found a way to continue shifting the blame…saying that China’s death toll is vastly underreported and that he guaranteed more people have died there than in the U.S. – they just aren’t telling the truth. And, while his own administration has been warning that caution is still required or people will die, Trump has been pandering to those who are rebelling against stay-at-home restrictions and demonstrating to open things up. When I saw a photo of one such demonstrator carrying a sign with a huge swastika and the names “Trump” and “Pence”, I had to write about that on my Not Fake News blog. With President Trump pressing to open up the nation’s economy and begin lifting stay-at-home orders so people can go back to work and to school, many Americans are protesting against their state governments’ rules that have shut things down. That, of course, is despite warnings from the experts like Dr. Anthony Fauci that it’s too soon to open up the economy, that doing so will risk even more deaths. Already, today, we passed the 3,000 who were killed in the 9/11 attack, and the deaths mount every day. Yesterday’s podcast was satire. This is not. It’s deadly serious. The question is really simple. What will we do if our hospitals and medical facilities can’t take care of us – not because of a lack of beds or not enough ventilators – but because the doctors and nurses are sick with the coronavirus? Today President Trump and other administration officials held a news conference that apparently was intended to calm coronavirus fears as well as Wall Street jitters, as nearly all of the stock market gains since his election have been lost. That, of course, is the big deal for Trump. That and the fact that a probable recession could doom his chances for re-election. So today he claimed that FDA had approved one drug and almost approved another that can help make those who contract COVID-19 to, in his words, get better. With all of the health, economic and technical experts at the disposal of the president of the United States, how comforting would it be if you knew that one of the sources used to create a response to the coronavirus was ideas crowdsourced from Facebook?Come to think of it, probably not that surprising at all, considering the fact that Trump doesn’t like science and prefers spinnable BS.But according to a Washington Post report, that is exactly what happened after Trump son-in-law commandeered the White House coronavirus response effort last week. He jumped in to save the day, helping to write Trump’s disastrous speech – the one where he sounded like a zombie on Percocet – and calling up his friends to get ideas from their Facebook friends.Then, Senator Sherrod Brown produced a letter proving that Trump did, in fact, know about the closing of that global health security office, despite the president’s claim to the contrary.Meanwhile, the situation continues to worsen and medical professionals warn of a catastrophe if cases skyrocket, like they did in Italy because of insufficient hospital and emergency room capacity. I have to say, I was surprised when House Democrats and President Trump quickly reached agreement on a bill to help the American people weather the coronavirus pandemic. Just a few days ago, I predicted it would take weeks, or longer. That, of course, was based on the record of discord and disagreement that has permeated Washington ever since Trump’s election.But surprise, surprise. They actually were able to negotiate a reasonably effective solution to at least help with the economic difficulties caused by the pandemic, and now we’ll see if Mitch McConnell’s Republican-ruled Senate will take similar action in the face of this crisis that has shaken our nation.Here’s my blog from today, March 14, on Not Fake News.biz. As each day passes, the news about the coronavirus continues to get worse. Today, President Trump declared a state of emergency, which will free up additional federal assistance and some form of action is expected to come from Congress. So, the stock market had a nice bounce back yesterday, gaining back more than half of Monday’s 2,000-plus point loss caused by concerns about the coronavirus and other oil-related jitters. Why did it rebound? Because investors liked hearing that Washington is working on a plan of economic assistance to help individuals and companies affected by the virus. Incredible to me that Trump’s biggest concern seems to be the ECONOMIC impact, not the fact that people are getting really sick and some are dying…but that’s just me. But I don’t think the optimism is very well founded. This is an election year and the politicians in charge of Washington these days haven’t exactly proven that they can act responsibly in the interests of the American people, not just in their own political interests. And, apparently, Wall Street investors, having had some time to digest all of this over night, decided they don’t trust Trump or Congress and the market hit the skids again today, giving back all of yesterday’s gains by lunchtime.
