After slavery was abolished, lynching emerged as a vicious tool of racial control to reestablish white supremacy and suppress black civil rights. More than 4,000 African Americans were lynched across 20 states between 1877 and 1950, according to “Lynching in America” from the Equal Justice Initiative.These lynchings were public acts of racial terrorism, intended to instill fear in entire black communities, and government officials often turned a blind eye or condoned the mob violence.The effects of racial terror lynchings are still being felt today, the Equal Justice Institute points out. I have no idea, really, what it must be like to live one’s life as a black man, not a white man. We all hear stories, and we see reports on the news about how young black men, especially, are subjected to unfair treatment simply because people are afraid of them.Why is that? Young whites commit just as many crimes of violence against people as do African Americans. According to the FBI, in fact, 67.5 percent of rapes in 2017 were committed by whites, compared to 28.7 percent by blacks. Aggravated assault, it was 62.1 to 33.5 percent. Nevertheless, that fear is ingrained in many white people and it’s translated into how they view people of color. What must it be like to live with that? To be afraid to jog in your neighborhood for fear of being shot? To be afraid to get a simple traffic ticket? It was amazing to me that when the coronavirus outbreak became big time news in the United States, that the cruise ship industry kept on cruising. President Donald Trump continues to astound me. Either he is stupid beyond belief, or he is sly as a fox and is simply using his seemingly numbskull comments to keep the twitter world on fire and remain at the front of the coronavirus pandemic story.The latest, as just about everybody on the planet knows by now, was his comment yesterday that it’s worth exploring to see if injecting people with disinfectant could cure the coronavirus. That sure kept him on fire on Twitter, but not exactly how he wanted, most likely.Because first thing today, he said, oh, no folks, I was just kidding.But his lunacy didn’t stop with his disinfectant remark. Nope. I could hardly believe it when I read that Mitch McConnell, Donald Trump’s pal who runs the United States Senate, said that instead of the federal government providing assistance to states struggling financially from the coronavirus, they should just declare bankruptcy.To me, that was just an incredible statement. And then, he intimated that because most of those states are led by Democratic governors, somehow that is the problem. Last week, the Trump administration announced a new plan to gradually open up the nation, reacting to pressure on the economy with a phased approach to opening parts of the country where the coronavirus is being brought under control. Trump told the governors it was up to them to decide what to do and when, a step that would let him off the hook if the virus resurfaces and more people die as a result. On the day he announced the plan, 5.2 million more Americans applied for unemployment benefits, bringing the four-week total to 22 million – the worst stretch of job losses in U.S. history. Meanwhile, numerous governors and business leaders have warned that more testing and protective gear are needed before they can start lifting lockdowns and other restrictions. And the number of cases and deaths keep mounting. As of Noon today, Sunday, April 19, there were 742,637 cases in the U.S. with 39,201 deaths. President Trump, of course, found a way to continue shifting the blame…saying that China’s death toll is vastly underreported and that he guaranteed more people have died there than in the U.S. – they just aren’t telling the truth. And, while his own administration has been warning that caution is still required or people will die, Trump has been pandering to those who are rebelling against stay-at-home restrictions and demonstrating to open things up. When I saw a photo of one such demonstrator carrying a sign with a huge swastika and the names “Trump” and “Pence”, I had to write about that on my Not Fake News blog. With President Trump pressing to open up the nation’s economy and begin lifting stay-at-home orders so people can go back to work and to school, many Americans are protesting against their state governments’ rules that have shut things down. That, of course, is despite warnings from the experts like Dr. Anthony Fauci that it’s too soon to open up the economy, that doing so will risk even more deaths. Nevertheless, two TV doctors – Dr. Oz and Dr. Phil…both Trump supporters…are stirring things up and their fans are listening. So that’s what the first part of this Podcast is about.
