How to Buy A Small Business-A Few Things Everyone Should Know

It was 2003. I had spent my first 6 years in the business world job hopping through corporate America and was suddenly miserable beyond belief. I had a great job with one of the largest corporations in the world. All I had to do was keep my head down, work hard, and I would eventually be an executive. Yet, I was miserable. I wanted something more. I wanted a life. I wanted to own and operate my own small business. That’s when I set out to purchase a business. I was 28 and didn’t know so much as the first step to take. All I knew was I wanted out of the corporate grind and wanted to enter the world of entrepreneurship. I learned a lot during the year I purchased my company. I learned most deals die before they succeed. I learned it can be an emotional roller coaster. I learned you don’t have to have a lot of money to buy a business. All you need is a willing seller, a compelling story as to why you are the right buyer and an ability to convince the seller they will get their money. That’s what I did. You can read about the entire experience in my book ‘Push Play: Taking Your Life Off Pause’ where I document my escape from corporate America. I give the good, the bad and the ugly of the whole experience. Here are some basics of purchasing a small business. While every deal is different, there are some universal practices to buying a business. The one thing I advise all my advisory clients who want to buy a business is this-make sure you really want to be a small business owner. Often it sounds better to be an entrepreneur than the reality of actually being one. I always use the analogy of when I decided I might want to buy a Harley Davidson Sportster. I borrowed a friend’s and went to our church parking lot to ride it for the first time. I laid it over inside of 2 minutes. I never got on a bike again. The thought of riding a Harley was much better than the reality. That said, let’s say you have already flipped the switch in your mind. You are an entrepreneur and want to buy a revenue stream. Good for you. Let’s talk some basics. As an entrepreneur, you always have to be on the lookout for new opportunities. One way to do this is to purchase an existing business. This can be a great way to get your foot in the door of a new industry or market, and it can also provide some instant revenue. Here are three easy steps to follow when purchasing a business: (1) due diligence, (2) negotiation, and (3) financing. Let’s take a closer look at each of these steps. Research the business you want to purchase and make sure it’s a good fit for you Purchasing a business is an exciting but risky undertaking. The sales process often requires salesmanship as owners are looking to maximize the sale price, while buyers must practice patience to keep their objectives top of mind without being taken advantage of in the deal. When considering a business, prospective buyers should be sure to communicate with current and past owners to gather certain key pieces of information that can help determine if it is a good fit or not; things like financial performance, customer satisfaction ratings, and reputation within the industry. Exploring these potential risks can help minimize getting into trouble down the road if salesmanship outpaces communication too much during the purchase. Find out how much the business is worth and get financing in place When determining the worth of a business, family, friends, and self-investment through 401(k)s can be great sources of finance. Banks can also be a great option when looking for financial support. Banks tend to have more in-depth knowledge and experience with business investments, so it is wise to do proper research before making a decision on where to best allocate funds. Doing this will ensure that financing is attainable and will give the business the best chance of success. Negotiate the purchase price with the seller and close the deal Negotiating the purchase price with the seller is one of the most important stages of sealing the deal. It requires salesmanship, relationship building, and a certain finesse which make it complex in nature. Making sure you are both on the same page and understanding each other’s opinions requires respect, thoughtfulness and a good personality in order to facilitate the transaction. Negotiating a sale can be difficult but if done right, can be just as rewarding as closing it. If you’re thinking of buying a business, there are a few things you should keep in mind. First, do your research to make sure the business is a good fit for you. Second, find out how much the business is worth and get financing in place. Finally, negotiate the purchase price with the seller and close the deal. By following these steps, you’ll be on your way to owning a successful business. Good luck! S4 Ep 294Lessons in Living Longer-Finding Your Life's Purpose

I don’t just want to live longer. I want to live longer and healthier. I want to be challenging Peter Attia at the Centenarian Decathlon. I want to play with my great great grandkids. Therefore, I want to find all the ways to hedge my bets to that end. One thing I’ve discovered in my research on longevity is that having a life’s purpose is key to longevity. I study by the NIH conducted in 1973 found that those who could name their purpose in life were twice as likely to live longer than those who could not. My life’s purpose is to improve always in all ways. It’s to become the best version of myself so that I’m the best father, husband and member of my community possible. I want to inspire others to be the best version of themselves so that the world will be a happier and more joyful place. What’s your purpose? We all have one whether we know it or not. Mark Manson says one of the best ways to know your purpose is to look toward those things that when you do them you forget to eat or poop. A key to finding your purpose is getting over yourself. Move your ego aside. Stop worrying about being important. Worry about being passionate and mission focused. Let your happiness, joy and performing your best as a human become of utmost importance. Don’t focus on what others think because I have a secret for you. They aren’t thinking about you anyway. If you are a failure or you are a great success, they don’t give a sh**. They have their own fears, problems and ambitions. They don’t have time to think about you. Take time to discover your life’s purpose. I’m going to be doing a 12 part series on living longer in The Vitruvian Letter. I hope you’ll check it out. S4 Ep 292Bill Maher, Jordan Peterson, Konstantin Kisin and John Kerry Walk Into a Podcast-Saving the Planet or Killing Poor People? The Climate Activist Conundrum

There have been some interesting discussions around climate change recently. It appears in the religion of ‘Woke’ an entire denomination of the faith has broken out-let’s call them ‘The Climatists.’ They mean well. They really do. How could anyone bent on saving the planet have anything other than good intentions? However, as is often the case with ‘good intentions’ there is a the risk of the cure being more harmful than the disease. In this episode I incorporated the help of some modern luminaries to give texture to the discussion of saving the planet. Don’t worry. It’s not some anti-activist conservative rant nor is it some tree hugging sermon on why more people need to die and less be born. It’s a look at the ‘other’ side of the climate debate that rarely gets discussed. In the race to save the planet few people take a close look at what trying to decrease the temperature of Earth 100 years from now will do to the least among us today. Worst yet, they know what it will do and don’t care. I contend the climate debate is not so much a red vs. blue or liberal vs. conservative argument as it is a have vs. have nots, rich vs. poor, developed country vs. undeveloped. I hope you enjoy, and maybe at least among my audience it will lead to a more nuanced discussion of this very important subject. Let’s improve our discourse always in ALL ways! S4 Ep 291Fighting The Resistance-Words of Wisdom From Steven Pressfield

onday Mission-Quit Telling Yourself What to Do All the Time. Instead, Ask The ‘resistance’ is a self inflicted sabotager that can keep us from answering our life’s highest call. I’ve fought it many times. I had to fight it to bring you this blog entry and podcast. It never goes away. What is the resistance actually? I don’t think anyone can say. Maybe it’s satan. Maybe it’s the universe just messing with us. While we can’t necessarily give it a face we can certainly see its shadow. It’s when you don’t do the thing you really want to do because others might think ill of you. It’s not pursuing your highest calling because you might fail and be left in shambles. To avoid our call we let things like time, talent, the views of others sabotage us. The sad thing is these things all exist only in our head. Life has enough boundaries, roadblocks and obstacles. Don’t make life even more difficult by creating resistance in your own mind. I first learned of the resistance from author Steven Pressfield in his book ‘The War of Art.’ It’s a fantastic read I recommend to any would-be creative or entrepreneur. He discusses in great detail what the resistance is as well as how to slay it. Pressfield has become somewhat of a virtual mentor of mine, and I’m thankful to learn his teachings and glean his wisdom. S4 Ep 290What Do You Do To Pull Yourself Out Of A Funk?

There are times I just don’t want to do anything. This is especially prevalent at times I’ve been taxing my brain for extended periods of time. Today I didn’t want to produce an episode of the podcast. I’ve been working on my course, Massively Transformative Habits (MTH), and it has been breaking my brain. So this morning I sat down to journal, and it ended up being like a sad note. I was just whining to my journal. What to do? Well, I decided to go for a state change. I got up, went over to the podcast booth and cranked out an episode on the subject. I wanted to see if this would be the state change that would get me on track. Guess what. It did. It was a game changer. What do you do when you find yourself spiraling? In this episode I try to give a real life in real time example of changing your state to de-funk. S4 Ep 279"The Leadership Secrets of Nick Saban: How Alabama's Coach Became the Greatest Ever" Author John Talty

So it’s no secret I’m a huge ‘fanboy’ of Nick Saban. I admire anyone who exudes such a long trajectory of excellence, discipline and sustained success. It’s hard to argue Saban is the GOAT of NCAA Football Coaches. This being the case, I was ecstatic when I heard John Talty had written a leadership book with detailed insight about Saban. I reached out immediately to get him on the show. I’m so happy I did. This was such an insightful conversation about the Crimson Tide head play caller. People like Nick Saban often reach a status of awe it can get somewhat exaggerated. “Is he really that disciplined?” In a word-yes. John Talty put the Oracle of Tuscaloosa under the microscope and what he found was a genotype that is made up of hard work, straight shooting candor, long hours, philosophical wisdom and what might be surprising to some-humility. Love him or hate him, Nick Saban is in a class by himself as a leader and coach. I loved getting to speak to John about his new book. I hope you enjoy this conversation with John Talty. Here’s where you can grab a copy of John’s book “The Leadership Secrets of Nick Saban: How Alabama’s Coach Became the Greatest Ever.”

S16 Ep 278The Billion $ Question! What Would You Do? What If You Already Have ALL You Need?

I was recently listening to a podcast where Peter Thiel was the guest. Thiel is the billionaire VC investor who was co-Founder of PayPal, the first major investor of Facebook and has become somewhat of an oracle of Silicon Valley. In this particular conversation he described the day Yahoo offered $1billion for Facebook. This would have grossed Founder Mark Zuckerberg $250MM at the ripe old age of 22. At the time FB had only 100k users, most of which were college students. Zuckerberg turned down the offer without blinking. The reason why he did is what I focus on in this episode. It gives great insight to what it looks like when you know you’ve found the thing that drives you to such a degree you can’t put a price tag on it-even if that tag is $250MM. Enjoy!

S4 Ep 277Happy New Year! 3 Books to Read NOW to Get Your Mind Right

Well, it’s here. The new year has begun. I don’t know about you, but I’m a little sluggish. It’s odd because I’m usually ready to begin a new year like a shot out of a canon. No so this year. I think it’s partly because the world just seems to be getting more and more exhausting. Uncertainty and the war being waged on truth just wears you down. So what to do? Well, my solution is to reinforce my mind with wisdom and strength. I want to build a fortress around my mind and be very cautious as to what penetrates. I want to be even more deliberate about what movies I watch, songs I listen to, news I consume and of course what books I read. I want to look to history for guidance. I want to search out wisdom. I want to continue being as healthy and slow the aging process as much as possible. I believe the surest way to create a good world is to first create a good me. I’m recommending three books to you this episode to read in 2023. All three have had a profound impact on my life, and I plan to re-read each this year. I encourage you to acknowledge truth when you see it. Be courageous enough to halt the madness of relativism being hoisted upon all of us. Look to those who have overcome great odds and be encouraged. Most of them were just like you and I. However, they tapped into a reserve of grit and courage they most likely didn’t even know they themselves had. Happy New Year! S4 Ep 274Is Ozempic a Wonder Weight Loss Drug? What is It? Why Are So Many People Taking?

Ozempic From The New York Times Nov. 22, 2022 Ozempic, a drug used to treat diabetes, has gained attention recently as celebrities, a tech mogul and TikTok influencers have described taking it to lose weight in short time frames. The Food and Drug Administration first approved the injectable medication for treating diabetes in 2017; the agency approved a drug with a higher dose of the active ingredient in Ozempic, called semaglutide, to treat obesity in 2021, under the brand name Wegovy. Since then, talk of the drug has popped up across the internet. Elon Musk, when asked about how he looked “fit, ripped and healthy,” tweeted that he was taking Wegovy. Andy Cohenposted about Ozempic’s growing popularity. In September, Variety reported that actors and producers “are quietly singing the drug’s praises” on Signal, an encrypted messaging app. On TikTok, thehashtag #Ozempic has been viewed over 273 million times, with people alternately expressing shock over their supposed medication-induced weight loss and swapping stories about side effects. S4 Ep 273A Camera, A Chance Encounter With Nikki Sixx, to An Incredibly Successful Entrepreneurial Career-Doug Pick

Doug Pick Founder Hearo’s and Sleep Pretty Pink Earplugs Doug Pick has had quite a ride. With dreams of becoming a record executive he entered the music industry in a totally different way. Instead of producing albums he produced earplugs. In this episode we discuss his entrepreneurs hero’s journey. Maybe a more appropriate description would be a ‘Hearo’s’ Journey. Doug Pick is the founder of Hearo Earplugs. Doug has become a friend, and he’s an incredibly talented storyteller and has plenty of stories to showcase his talent. Join me for this episode where the nuggets of wisdom rain down like mana from Heaven! Through a series of unforeseeable events, at age 13, Nikki Sixx (yes — THE Nikki Sixx, leader of the heavy metal band, Motley Crue) invited me to be the band’s official local photographer. This once in a lifetime experience left an indelible mark and set the stage for my life as an entrepreneur.   I attended USC’s Entrepreneur Program, all the while, fixated on becoming a music business executive. Just days after graduating, Jerry Moss, Chairman of the Board of the famed A&M Records, hired me to work in sales. Through A&M, I enjoyed concerts and noticed frequently the only people protecting their ears were those on stage. I was a curious 24 year old and had no idea this single perplexing observation would lead me on a wonderful 26 year journey to become a recognized global leader in foam ear plugs. Research, research and more research on the ears and how to protect one’s hearing. By completing a viability study, I knew I could bring to the masses an innovative new brand and product. In 1992, I trademarked HEAROS and went to work. I lived by the saying “the only place where Success comes before Work is in the dictionary” and was eventually rewarded beyond my dreams. By 2008, HEAROS had claimed the position as the #1 and #2 selling foam ear plug brands in the country through the nation’s largest retailers.  With nearly 20 years experience of buying hundreds of millions of ear plugs from others, I craved to support my desire for disruptive proprietary innovative designs and building enterprise value for my company.  In 2011, from the ground up, I built a state of the art ear plug manufacturing, assembly and distribution facility.  Looking back, it was the most difficult project I ever took on.  Fortunately,  I was blessed with a brilliant and passionate team.  When completed, our ear plug manufacturing facility would be capable of producing 120 MILLION ear plugs annually. As fate would have it, a large private equity group saw synergy and acquired all four HEAROS companies in October 2018. By the time my HEAROS chapter concluded in 2020, I’d made a transformative mark in the ear plug category and sold more than 500 MILLION ear plugs worldwide.  As a next step, I invested in a Metaverse startup and accepted a senior position to apply my talents and experience.  While it was a thrill to work with the entertainment community and raise funding from venture capital, I felt the pull to return to my roots of product marketing and distribution. So begins my next chapter.  I’m exhilarated to offer my energy, experience and skills to help other bold dreamers achieve extraordinary success.

S4 Ep 271Sexual Purity and Its Impact on Women Getting The Man They Want

I’ve been researching a great deal on what’s going on in dating, relationships, marriage rates, birth rates etx. You know, the stuff that keeps a society in existence. I’m constantly shocked by the flippant attitude women and men alike have toward sex these days. I can’t help but think this is part of why we see people refraining from marriage or at a minimum putting it off longer and longer. Further, women today, according to statistics, are more miserable than ever. Did you know on dating apps women only swipe right 5% of the time on average? This means 5% of the guys are getting all the girls. I think the 4th wave of feminism has done an enormous amount of harm to women. It has taught them to be more self accepting and loving of “who they are.” Fine..good..I’m all in on accepting one’s immutable traits such as height, looks etc. What I’m not down for is accepting yourself for being a ‘ho’. Yep. I said it-a ‘ho’. Further, it’s incredibly arrogant and narcissistic to demand a man lower his standards to your self accepted standards. Girls, if you want to get the guy, you are going to have to find out what men actually want in spite of what the militant feminists tell you. It’s a two way street. You would never encourage your daughter to date a self accepting fat, no job having slob for a husband who sat in a basement crushing porn all day. You would never say to her, “Don’t be so superficial. He accepts himself for who he is and damn it so should you!” It turns out what men want is a woman who is young and pure. This is in contrast with what most women are these days by the time they are ready to marry. When this time comes to pass, they are older and far far from pure. They’ve been told if men have a lot of sex so should we. Well, you absolutely have the right to do it, but don’t expect men to want to marry you. So the question always gets asked, “Why is it ok for men to have lots of sex but not women?” First, I don’t think men should be having lots of sex either. I think that is the height of douchebaggery. However, there is a difference between men and women and here it is. Women are born valuable and desired. A woman can have sex whenever she’s ready. A man has to earn his value. A man has to be of some value and has to work to have sex. Any woman reading this knows if she wanted to have sex she could. A man cannot. This is why if a man is a “player” he usually has some traits women want. He has to! Otherwise, he wouldn’t be a player. On the other hand a girl need only have one quality-willingness. Is this fair to women? Probably not. However, is it fair men have to work so much harder for sex than women? These are tough questions that need addressing. My bottom line as the father of two girls is this. Girls, I want you to find your prince. I want a man who will love, adore, cherish and respect you. I want the top 1% for you BUT me wanting it isn’t enough. YOU must make yourself desirable to that prince. That’s on you.

Is Aging a Choice? Dr. Nayan Patel

Dr. Nayan Patel and Tony Robbins I’ve become somewhat obsessed with optimizing my age. Well, maybe that’s the wrong description. I’ve become obsessed with slowing the aging process but more importantly adding healthspan. There is a difference. Although we are living longer, we are not living healthier. There has even been a trend in the U.S. by which people are reversing the strides we’ve made and dying sooner. That’s almost unfathomable. Oh, and before you say, “Yea, Jason, but what about COVID?” It’s accounted for. We aren’t dying sooner because of COVID. We are dying sooner because of poor health choices. America is getting, on the whole, unhealthier. This impacts not only lifespan, but more importantly healthspan. In those ‘marginal’ years (those years in which we are at the end of life and basically on borrowed time) many people are not living. They are simply alive. This sucks. I’m on a mission to actually LIVE as long as I can. I’m hoping when I die, it will just be a sudden stop or a very quick downturn due to overuse. To this end, I have been seeking out the advice and input from leading experts such as Dr. Matt Kaeberlein and others. This week’s guest is somewhat of a pioneer and genius. Dr. Nayan Patel is world renown for his breakthrough in Glutathione supplementation specifically how it is delivered. Dr. Patel discovered and patented a method of applying glutathione topically thus bypassing the liver and actually being absorbed into the body. Glutathione known as the ‘master antioxidant’ has many benefits for healthspan and longevity. Before hearing about Dr. Pate’s work I knew nothing of Glutathione. Now I apply his serum every day. I also happen to be in good company. Some of his most prominent clients include Tom Brady and Tony Robbins. It also happens that Dr. Patel is a truly amazing human. What started as a conversation about a supplement and healthspan turned into one of philosophy. I am so fortunate to have been able to have this conversation with Dr. Patel. I know you will enjoy it as well. Lifespan About Dr. Nayan Patel Nayan Patel PharmD, Founder of Auro Wellness and CEO of Central Drugs Compounding Pharmacy. Dr. Nayan Patel is a sought after pharmacist, wellness expert, and thought leader in his industry. He has been working with physicians since 1999 to custom develop medication for their clients and design a patient specific drug and nutrition regimen. He has been the pharmacist of choice to celebrities, CEO’s and physicians themselves. He recently published his first comprehensive book, “The Glutathione Revolution: Fight Disease, Slow Aging & Increase Energy.” After 11 years of clinical research on the master antioxidant, glutathione, Dr. Patel finally shares how powerful and essential glutathione is to the body’s detox system. He speaks about the various benefits it has with slowing the aging process down, and explains how you can increase your levels naturally. Dr. Patel is a firm believer in providing the body with tools it needs to defend itself and promote a healthy lifestyle that fits the pace of the modern world. Nayan Patel, Pharm.D is globally regarded as the foremost go-to expert on absorbable forms of glutathione, and holds the only patent on transdermal glutathione. In addition to many other topics such as cellular function and hormone replacement, Patel is a highly sought after global authority on the critical role in that glutathione, and all other antioxidants and endogenous molecules play in the body. Along with traveling the world educating practitioners on advanced biochemistry and anti-aging science, Dr. Patel also serves as adjunct faculty at the University Of Southern California School Of Pharmacy where he is also an alumnus. He is currently a licensed compounding pharmacist that is still involved in designing and compounding drugs and nutrition therapies for his patients that includes athletes, CEO’s, highly stressed actors, physicians themselves and the community where he has practiced for 25 years. S4 Ep 263Sabina Nawaz-Executive Coach to World Leaders, The Power of Self Talk and Being Authentically You

Sabina Nawaz is a leader. So much so that Sabina Nawaz coaches leaders. There are so many times I pinch myself for the amazing guests I get to visit with on the Jason Wright Show. This was one of those times. Enjoy this conversation with a remarkable human being. Coaching is not just about the skill and experience of a coach but the chemistry between the coach and the client. Here’s some information about me that might help you better understand my approach and whether you would enjoy and benefit from working together. Who I am as a coach I have walked in your shoes. I worked at Microsoft for more than 14 years, first launching products and then managing leaders. I’ve built organizations, hired employees, dealt with performance issues, and coordinated complex cross-organizational initiatives. I have empathy for your challenges. At the same time, I know when to be direct and push you towards your goals. I’ve been fortunate to have worked directly with many of the leading experts in leadership and organizational development. While I’m always current with the latest thinking on leadership, my work is about street smarts first, book smarts second. I combine theory with my own road testing and the collective experience of the clients I’ve worked with around the world. The results for you are practical, real-world skills that get results even in an evolving business environment. My philosophy I believe that each person has many of the answers they’re looking for already inside of them. What they need in order to fully play out their strengths is an abiding understanding of who they are. It’s a level of acceptance that eludes most people. And I help leaders to discover and cultivate the strength to tap into their own authentic talents. I believe in seeing with clarity. The facts and the perceptions of others simply exist. By illuminating the dark corners, I help bring truth to light. It’s much easier to do the work once you can fully see what’s under the table. I believe in the power of multiple perspectives. Often when people are stuck, they think there is one way to solve a problem and that way will cost dearly. I work with you to develop many different alternatives and see other viewpoints. I believe that you are an individual. My work is rich and rewarding precisely for that reason. Your humanity is sacred to me. Solutions and frameworks will always be tailored to your particular needs. I believe in helping you to skill-up rather than saving the day. I am more likely to accompany you on a journey in which you uncover answers yourself. This paves the way for you to be self-sufficient and create the solution that works for you and your organization now and over time.

S4 Ep 262Aspirations vs. Behaviors-How to Create Massive Transformation in Your Life!-Best Friday Ever

Goals are great. I love goals. I have goals. However, goals don’t change your life. Behaviors and habits change your life. If you were to say to me you had a goal to lose 20 lbs. there is nothing you could do to lose the 20 lbs right here and now. However, you could go for a walk right now and proceed to go for a post dinner walk every night. One is an aspiration. The other is a behavior. The latter is the only one you actually have control over. Understanding the difference is how you execute massive change and goal attainment. It’s what Nick Saban calls the process. Create processes for goal attainment. Don’t just stop with setting the goals. Improve always in ALL ways. Happy Friday!

S4 Ep 261"It was almost making me sick" Wes Austin's Journey from Attorney to Comedian-Answering Your Creative Call

So this guy keeps coming up in my feed on YouTube. He’s funny. He offers quick, sharp political commentary with a conservative slant. Comedy, conservative and comedian are not three things you see a lot. Wes Austin has found a way to satisfy is creative outlet in a funny and engaging way. I admire anyone willing to step out and nurture their passions, and Wes is doing just that. I also admire anyone who can use intelligence and creativity to help us laugh at these absurd political times we find ourselves in while not being mean spirited and overly insulting. Wes has found the balance. Wes Austin is a lawyer, and stand-up comedian. He grew up in a family of eight children in a small town in northern Utah. As a former electrical engineer, now lawyer, husband and father of three, Wes brings a unique and fun perspective to comedy.  In 2014 Wes wrote and produced a television pilot for “The IP Section,” a scripted autobiographical drama/comedy (“dramedy”) that takes a fictional look at Wes’s first rocky attempt at comedy while trying to keep it a secret from his clients, co-workers and family. The pilot was accepted by the ITVFest and San Francisco Independent film festivals. For his role in the pilot, Wes won Best Lead Actor in a Short Film at the 2017 Utah Film Awards. In March of 2019 a web series based on “The IP Section” pilot was released on both Facebook and YouTube. The web series has over a million views on Facebook and continues to grow every day. Wes wrote, directed, and starred in “The IP Section” comedy series that is an autobiographical look at Wes, a patent lawyer, going after his dream of being a stand-up comedian. The CBS affiliate in Utah (KUTV) did a feature story about Wes and the pursuit of his dreams in June of 2019. From the story, “Austin is now inspiring others to pursue their dreams as well.”

S4 Ep 260Sunday Special With Daniel Turner-Is Smoking Marijuana a Sin? How Good Do I Have To Be For God To Love Me? What Is Sin?

We are living in strange times. One of the biggest misconceptions of Christianity is it’s something once you decide to adopt then you must adhere to some hard and fast set of rules. This is something many refer to as ‘religiosity’ or ‘legalism.’ In this conversation with my Pastor Daniel Turner we riff on sin, the love of God and what the life of the Christian looks like. As with any other discussion of religion, I’m sure many believers and non-believers will disagree with much of what Daniel has to say. BUT here’s one thing I think we can all agree with that comes through in Daniel’s message. We all need more love in this world. God is love. The Bible says it. 1 John 4:16 reads, “God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him.” So the very essence of the Christian faith is one rooted in love. Thanks for listening. S4 Ep 25910 Things I Stopped Doing After Turning 40-Best Friday Ever

I’ve often said when I turned 40 my ‘I don’t give a sh** meter went way up. It wasn’t a cognitive thing. It required no effort. Something just organically happened. I’m not sure what, but it did. Now I’m 47 and I realize I might have had it wrong. I didn’t increase my list of things I don’t care about. I just became more acutely aware of the things I do care about. It’s funny. When you focus intently on that which matters the things you don’t just sort of naturally organize themselves without any effort on our part. For example, I once worried intently about being seen as a really nice guy. My stepmother had once told me, “People wonder why your brothers and sisters don’t hate you.” This stung and stayed with me well into my adult life. I used to obsess over it. I think I had this mindset that if everyone thought my siblings should hate me then they must hate me as well. Yikes! To make up for this I needed to be liked. I needed everyone to know I wasn’t the awful person my stepmother led me to believe I was. I needed people to know I was really kind and nice. As a result I would somewhat ‘perform’ for others. I no longer do this. I don’t worry about that anymore. Instead I focus on those I know love me and work on loving them back, which is no work at all. I focus my attention on being a good and decent person not because I need to be liked and prove my stepmother wrong but because I just genuinely want to be a good person and example. A lot of people say they don’t care what others think. I’ve found most people who say this actually care deeply what most people think. If they didn’t they wouldn’t have to make such an announcement. They wouldn’t care if you knew or didn’t know they don’t care what people think. You know? Here is a list of 10 things I’ve determined I won’t do any longer. We always hear of goals and metrics outlining those things we must do, have to do, gonna do. We’re gonna do em every day, every week, we’re gonna do do do all the live long day. I’ve written before on the power of a ‘not to do list.’ Here’s another take on the concept. Have a list of things you are determined you will focus on so you no longer do the things that simply aren’t adding value to your life.

S4 Ep 228Losing it All and Gaining Everything. Leadership and Building a Culture of Excellence With Greg Cagle

I’m. a lucky guy. The Jason Wright show gives me the opportunity to meet truly special people and make lifelong friends. That’s the case here with my interview with Greg Cagle. Greg is a leader’s leader. He has been up. He’s been down and he’s learned from his entire journey. His ability to learn from past tragedy and apply it his ongoing success has made him one of the most sought after Executive Coaches around. Greg Cagle isn’t for everyone. Some might say he’s an acquired taste. They might even say he’s one weird dude. And that’s a good thing. If you’re content with normal, Greg Cagle probably isn’t for you or your organization, because Greg believes greatness isn’t normal—and neither are you. So if you want a traditional, buttoned-up, three-piece suit experience so you can look, think, and act like everyone else, you’re in the wrong place. But if you’re serious about your personal growth and serious about taking your business or organization over the top, Greg just might be the ideal growth partner for you. When you work with Greg, prepare to take some risks. Get ready to question the status quo and leave mediocreville behind. Every engagement with Greg is an exhilarating, inspiring experience, a fun and challenging ride—unique to you—that gets you where you want to go faster. Some have described Greg as edgy and transformational. But all that really matters is getting innovative, creative results that empower you and your team to outperform the competition. A Little of Greg’s Story Greg’s business background is as non-traditional as he is. He walked away from a college scholarship to dive into the world of business. He got his hands dirty building businesses from scratch and learned the real-world lessons—from painful mistakes and impressive success—about what it takes for a business to thrive. Over the course of his entrepreneurial career, he has started five successful businesses in industries as diverse as real estate development, engineering and tech, food services and hospitality, and advertising and marketing. Everything he’s ever done, he’s built from ground zero. He knows what it feels like to lie awake on Tuesday night wondering how to make payroll on Friday. As a coach and consultant, he’s come alongside the top leaders and businesses in even wider-ranging fields: Army Special Operations Steel and diesel engine manufacturing 5-star hospitality Cutting-edge technology and software Non-profit educational systems and higher education Financial and insurance Oil and gas engineering He has also partnered with John C. Maxwell and his company for many years as an executive coach, speaker, trainer, and business consultant. Bottom line: he’s seen it all, made almost every mistake there is to be made at least once (and then some), and figured out how to overcome challenges and achieve tremendous success. You’re not going to find Greg’s proven “Let’s do this!” approach in an outdated business school textbook. It’s a roll-up-your-sleeves-and-let’s-get-our-hands-dirty-building-something-awesome experience. Family Is Everything On the personal side of life, Greg’s family is at the core of everything. His most important and satisfying role in life is being the father of three sons. Because family means so much to him, Greg and his wife sold everything and moved to the rainforests of Costa Rica for three years to invest in family relationships. They now reside in Knoxville, Tennessee. Greg naturally brings that family-focused attitude when helping business build authentic cultures. Professional families bring a lot of the same relationships, challenges, and dysfunction common to all families. Greg gets it. He helps guide teams and organizations to get real, to create an authentic culture that positions them for unprecedented greatness. As one client put it, “Greg restored humanity to our organization.”

S4 Ep 253Monday Mission: Managing Energy NOT Time Is the Key To Greater Focus and Effectiveness

The Jason Wright Show Monday Mission While we might be good multi-taskers this does not mean the multiple tasks will be exceptionally performed. Further, it means we are diluting our energy as well as our effectiveness. So often people get obsessed with managing time. By this they mean getting as much done in the time they have. This is wrong-headed. We should instead be focused on managing energy toward performing better work not more. Our goal should be to do the BEST work in the time we have allotted. Think of tasks the way a sprinter things of theirs. They see the finish line. They go all out a the their highest level full of focus and energy. Tasks should be sprints NOT marathons. Have a great week!

S4 Ep 249Is Aging a Disease? Healthspan, Rapamycin, and The Dog Aging Project with Matt Kaeberlein, PhD

Matt Kaeberlien is one of the leading researchers on the science of aging. I was beyond honored to have him on the show to discuss this now almost clieche question: “Is aging a disease?” Although the FDA and other health professionals don’t want to categorizes it as such, aging has many of the similarities of a disease. This being the case we can, if willing, combat aging in a pro-active manner as though we were fighting a disease. Matt is one of the leading experts in the burgeoning field of healthspan sciences. It’s not enough we are living longer. We must find ways to live healthier longer. Matt has been at the forefront of research on Rapamycin, which while not a panacea has shown to be a powerful deterrent of some of the symptoms of aging. This was such a fascinating conversation, and I feel so lucky to have been able to share this time with Matt. I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did. Research Interests Dr. Kaeberlein’s research interests are focused on biological mechanisms of aging in order to facilitate translational interventions that promote healthspan and improve quality of life. S4 Ep 251onday Mission-Quit Telling Yourself What to Do All the Time. Instead, Ask

There is a power to asking ourselves questions instead of always giving our brain answers like, “You got this. You’re a badass. You’re a winner. You’re good enough, smart enough and doggonit people like you.” Instead ask yourself, “How will you fix this? What makes you a badass? What is the solution to this problem?” The simple fact is the brain loves questions. It loves to answer them. It’s why parents point to books and ask their kids, “What is this?” They know it will calm the child and engage their brain. It will turn calming them down into a game their little brains love. Calm your brain and give it something it loves. Ask it a question. Happy Monday and Happy Halloween! JW

S4 Ep 246Eat Your Organ Meats! James Barry-Founder of Pluck

Who says organ meats can’t be delicious? Get this YOU the Jason Wright show listener get a hookup. Use promo code IMPROVE at checkout for a 15% discount on the best and healthiest seasonings you’ve EVER put in your face hole! James is a cool guy who turned a dream and a passion into the reality of a great company. Oh, and I’ve tried the product. I’m hooked. The Garlic Zest seasoning is stupid good. Here’s a little more about James and Pluck. Hi, I’m James, founder of Pluck. At Pluck, we’re all about organ meats, yet not just any organ meats. Quality is everything when eating any part of an animal. We define quality as grass-fed, grass-finished, humanely treated, pasture-raised animals raised with no GMOs or hormones. “As close to nature as possible” is what I say. There’s a lot of what is wrong in our current agricultural systems, but more and more farms are pivoting to what is right: Regenerative Agriculture. With diverse crop coverage and no tilling we can change not only the food produced on these farms but our health as well. We are what we eat AND what we eat eats. Ancestral principles of “like supports like” and nose-to-tail eating drive our mission at Pluck. We are missing out on the whole animal benefits when we only eat muscle meat. Pluck is the perfect gateway into eating organs because it doesn’t taste like organ meat. What you taste is the savory, deliciousness of Umami (the fifth taste). Eating organs support the health of your organs. Even better, organs contain bioavailable nutrients which means you get more “bang-for-your-buck” because your body can recognize and absorb these essential vitamins and nutrients. Look, I’ll be the first to admit I didn’t eat organ meats as a kid. I was the pickiest of picky eaters. I didn’t eat my first taco until college. When I say that I had a PB&J sandwich for lunch daily between the ages of 5 and 15…I’m not joking. Growing up, we basically ate the same 4 or 5 home-cooked meals every week. Fridays were pizza night out and Sundays were Chinese food ordered in. As a child of the 70s, I grew up eating fast food, frozen vegetables, and when microwaves started becoming vogue, microwave meals, particularly popcorn. My father owned a grocery store so we had access to lots of common foods and snacks, most of all, candy! I understand picky eating and more importantly, I understand the human need for comfort food. In fact, I’ve spent the last 16+ years as a professional chef focused on making comfort foods healthy without sacrificing taste. I’ve cooked for celebrities, musicians, and billionaires, but it was becoming a father that forced me to go deeper in my exploration of functional food. At the age of two, my youngest daughter was afflicted with the life-threatening Shiga toxin. I had left town for work thinking she was on the road to recovering only to return to her looking like skin and bones. It was a truly frightening time where my wife and I struggled to get nutrients into her. Fortunately, she survived and is a vibrant, healthy child but the experience left me wanting to create a functional food product that anyone could eat and benefit from without requiring them to adopt new habits or step outside of their comfort zone. That’s what Pluck is all about. Nutrition in a pinch. No need to adopt new habits, simply use Pluck instead of salt and pepper and turn everything into a nutrient-rich, bio-available superfood. S4 Ep 244Anxiety or Fear? How do you know? Proven strategy for relieving fear and anxiety.

It’s 2:30 a.m. All of the sudden it happens. The damn smoke alarm is chirping. Why? Is it a dead battery? Is it some sort of special alarm reserved for Zombie attacks? What is going on? Then in starts. You try to make it stop. You press the little protruding button on the outside. Nothing. The chirp continues. Then you try to dial in your code on the alarm pad. Nothing. Still chirp…….chirp…….chirp…..then it happens. You decide to just rip the thing off the wall. Bring on the Zombies. Bring on a fire just make this damn thing stop. Finally after taking a baseball bat to the alarm and throwing it in the street you settle back in for some shuteye. In my interview with Dr. John Delony, we discussed anxiety. Dr. John described anxiety as being like a smoke alarm. We know there’s smoke somewhere, but where is it? Often what we term as anxiety is just adult-speak for fear. Instead of saying, “I’m afraid of…” we say, “I’m anxious about..” However much of what we term as anxiety is merely a signal of a fear. If we can connect the dots from anxiety to our fear, then we can deal with the root of the problem. In this episode I deconstruct this idea as well as give a description of the different parts of the brain that impact fear and anxiety as well as suggest solutions to quash our fears or at least put them in their proper perspective. Thanks for listening. Oh, and as promised in the show, here’s the link for you 15% of Pluck Seasoning! This stuff is delicious! Remember to use promo code IMPROVE to get your discount. S5 Ep 244David Limbaugh and Christen Limbaugh Bloom On Their New Book 'The Resurrected Jesus'

NATIONAL BESTSELLER!The Resurrected, Conquering JesusIn the fifth and final installment of his bestselling Jesus series, David Limbaugh digs into the New Testament epistles with passion and imagination, showing that the testimony of Jesus’ earliest followers provides irrefutable proof of His resurrection.Inspired by God and penned by the apostles, the epistles were written to the first Christians to proclaim the divinity of Christ and to encourage them to persevere through persecution, famine, sickness, and doubt. On a lawyerly quest for truth, Limbaugh looks behind these biblical texts, exploring the lives of their authors, who included some of those closest to the Lord—his most intimate friends, Peter and John, and his own kinsmen James and Jude. The result is an unforgettable encounter with Jesus. The Resurrected Jesus speaks to the struggles the church faces today, strengthening believers and challenging doubters with the eyewitness accounts of the messengers who travelled far and wide to proclaim the resurrected Christ. Limbaugh was born on December 11, 1952, in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, to Mildred Carolyn “Millie” (née Armstrong) and Rush Hudson Limbaugh, Jr.[1] Limbaugh’s paternal grandfather was Missouri state representative, lawyer, and United States Ambassador Rush Hudson Limbaugh Sr. Following high school, Limbaugh attended Southeast Missouri State University in 1971 and 1972, transferring to the University of Missouri, where he graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in political science. Limbaugh then went on to law school at Missouri where he received his Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the University of Missouri in 1978.[2] He also served in the National Guard for six years. He has written columns that are carried by Creators Syndicate,[3] Townhall.com, WorldNetDaily and Jewish World Review.[4] In addition to his legal and writing work, Limbaugh also works as an agent for several conservative talk radio hosts.[5] He currently practices law as a partner at The Limbaugh Firm and specializes in entertainment law.[6] Limbaugh was chosen by Christian authors Norman Geisler and Frank Turek to write the foreword to their book I Don’t Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist (Crossway, 2004). In the book, Limbaugh states that he became a Christian after years of being a skeptic and that he now has a strong interest in Christian apologetics.[7] Limbaugh describes himself as “an evangelical Christian”.[8] Limbaugh and his wife, Lisa, have five children.[1] Limbaugh has written several books, some of which have been bestsellers, such as Crimes Against Liberty, which was The New York Times’ Non-fiction best seller for two weeks in 2010.[9] From Christen’s website My name is Christen Limbaugh Bloom and I’m the creator of Haplous. I absolutely love Jesus and am genuinely “wow’d” CONSTANTLY by His immense grace and love. For a long time I tried to start reading the Bible but never really knew how to get hooked like so many people in my life were. That all changed one summer when one of my best friends gave me a daily devotional. That devotional became the first baby step I needed to start growing the deeply personal relationship with Jesus I had heard so many people describe, but had never experienced for myself. THANK YOU JESUS!  (literally). My relationship with Jesus started to flourish when I finally took the pressure off MYSELF, and allowed HIM to transform my heart, day by day. People began to notice a difference in me and I, in turn, started telling them about all of the books, devotionals, websites, & scholars I had stumbled upon throughout my journey to get to know God. And that’s exactly what I intend to share HERE with you.  I’ve created this page for people who are craving a deeper connection with God, but don’t know where to start. I hope these #babysteps will help each & every one of you. Jesus LOVES you! For real. He is an actual person who loves you. He also has a PLAN for YOU. S4 Ep 243s That The Best You Can Do? Growth Minded Monday-Henry Kissinger, A Trip To The Moon and What It Means To Do Your Best

Sr. Aide to Henry Kissinger, Winston Lord was asked to prepare a speech for Kissinger. Upon completion he handed it to his boss. Contacting his boss a little later for feedback Kissinger replies, “Are you sure this is the best you can do? Lord replies “Henry, I thought so, but I’ll try again.” Lord then goes back to the drawing board, tweaks, revises and resubmits another a draft a few days later. The next day, Kissinger calls Lord into his office and again asks “Are you sure this is the best you can do?” Lord begins to question his work and says “Well, I really thought so. I’ll try one more time.” Believe it or not, this uncomfortable and rejecting process goes on for EIGHT times; EIGHT drafts; each time Kissinger standing firm to his original feedback of “Is this the best you can do?” Lord returns to Kissinger’s office with the now NINTH draft and awaits his response. Surely enough, Kissinger calls Lord in the next day and asks him the same question, “Is this the best you can do?” Lord, now completely fed up, furiously replies “Henry! I’ve beaten my brains out – this is the ninth draft! I know it’s the best I can do; I can’t possibly improve one more word!!!” Kissinger then looks at Lord and nonchalantly says “Well, in that case, now I’ll read it.” Why is it was so often choose to do second best when we absolutely know it’s our first best that’s needed? S4 Ep 242"I will never get married. It makes no sense."-Jason Wright

So that has proven to be one of the dumbest most backward things I have ever said in my life. It turns out not only is marriage the best thing that has ever happened to me, it is good for others as well. Married couples live longer, have less strokes and are happier on the whole than those who are not. There is also many other ancillary benefits to marriage. However, with the redefinition of..well everything we marriage is losing in popularity. This era of self worship is causing marriage to make less sense to people. However, the statistics show this is not a good thing. In this episode I take a look at some stats from Scott Galloway’s book “Adrift-America in 100 charts” to discuss some of the ‘beneath the surface’ numbers of what’s going on in society. I hope you’ve had a great week! JW

S4 Ep 241Monday Mission: Improve Your Decision Making by Scrapping the Ben Franklin List! Inside vs. Outside Knowledge

We’ve all made them-the proverbial Ben Franklin pros vs. cons list. However, these really aren’t all that effective. The reason is because they tend to be clouded by our self fulfilling prophecies. We want what we want, and as a result we tend to not be very objective when making these lists. We will ‘yea but’ a con off the list because of our inside information. We know we should put it on the con, but we will say to ourselves, “Yea, but she’s so sweet.” “Yea but, I’ve always wanted a car like that.” We will ‘yea but’ our way from one bad decision to another if we aren’t careful. We also covered such topics as the proper etiquette when shaking hands and the value of a well executed bro hug. As always the conversation was fun, lively and complete with stupidity. Just like Josh and I. Enjoy the show! #MLB #JoshTomlin #BroHug

S4 Ep 240Monday Mission-Exercise Gratitude Implement This Gratitude Protocol to Slay Depression and Anxiety

Many studies have explored the association between gratitude and depression, but no meta-analysis has been reported. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to fill that gap. The meta-analysis synthesized the association in 70 reported effect sizes from 62 published and unpublished articles, involving a total of 26,427 child, adolescent, and adult participants. The studies were completed by different research teams, using different samples, different measures, and various correlational research designs. The results showed a significant association between gratitude and depression, r = -0.39 (95% confidence intervals -0.44, -0.34), indicating that individuals who experience more gratitude have lower levels of depression. The results did not vary significantly with the measure of gratitude or depression used, whether the study was longitudinal or cross-sectional, the age of participants or the percentage of female participants, suggesting a robust connection between higher levels of gratitude and lower levels of depression. The findings show a substantial association between gratitude and depression. The association provides a reason to explore further the effects of gratitude-focused interventions as a method to alleviate depression and to prevent the development of depression.* Jo A Iodice, John M Malouff* and Nicola S Schutte University of New England, Australia

Ep 238Stone Chiseler Sunday-Chapter 7 'Between Action and Reaction'

I’ve mentioned before ‘The Stone Chiseler’ was inspired by Viktor Frankl’s ‘Man’s Search for Meaning.’ One of my favorite quotes of Frankl’s is “Between action and reaction is space.” We all have a choice to determine how we react in any circumstance. Granted sometimes it is much harder than others. However, if we can master this ‘space’ between action and reaction, we will gain control of our actions as well as the reaction of others profoundly. In Chapter 7 Giovanni is given this lesson at a time when he wants to react with anger. S1 Ep 236Fixed vs. Growth Mindset Know The Difference and Change Your Life-Best Friday Ever

I am a recovering fixed mindset sufferer. For years I was so much more worried about performance and how others perceived me I let it limit jobs I took, opportunities I pursued you name it. I was so worried that if I failed at something, it would mean I was a failure and that’s how others would see me. However, since adopting a growth mindset much of that has changed. I now attempt things that are so hard I might just fail. I’ve learned to enjoy the process of trying and the benefit of learning. In this episode of The Best Friday Ever I discuss areas where a fixed mindset can have adverse consequences on our lives. Much of the research on this topic was pioneered by Stanford researcher Dr. Carol Dweck. Here is bit about her. American psychologist Carol Dweck is primarily interested in the influence of mindset on motivation and self-regulation. She believes that the right mindset can be the key to our success. She specifically focuses on fixed and growth mindsets, which she believes are two ends of a spectrum of how people view their abilities. Those towards the fixed end believe their abilities are innate and unchangeable, whereas those who lie towards the growth end of the continuum believe that their abilities are malleable, and success can be achieved through hard work. Dweck promotes a growth mindset as more adaptive than a fixed mindset and encourages parents and teachers to guide children in developing a growth mindset. Her ultimate goal is to reduce stress and encourage people to persevere when faced with challenges. Individuals with a fixed mindset tend to stay down when they fall. Dweck stresses the importance of getting back up and trying again, reminding us that, with dedication and hard work, we are all capable of achieving great things.“ Test scores and measures of achievement tell you where a student is, but they don’t tell you where a student could end up. – Carol Dweck in her 2006 book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success

S4 Ep 229Give Yourself a “Do Over” Before You Need a “Do Over” Best Friday Ever

“So live as if you were living already for the second time and as if you had acted the first time as wrongly as you are about to act now!”-Viktor Frankl Wait Vik. What the hell are you talking about? It’s very simple. Take the time to give yourself a draft folder. Think through your toughest decisions. Play out the scenario in your mind about what you are about to do. Think through the ramifications. Feel the emotion your action will most likely insight. Give Yourself a “Do Over” Before You Need a “Do Over” Best Friday Ever Now. Think as though you have the opportunity to do it a second time. It’s like a do over before you need a do over. So often what we call “mistakes” are not mistakes at all. They are just bad, poorly thought out decisions. You didn’t end up in bed with someone who wasn’t your spouse by mistake. Nope. you knew exactly what you were doing. So maybe if you had thought about that decision prior to and then did the right thing you wouldn’t be in the position you’re in now with a broken marriage or a relationship hanging by a thread. Take the time to create a decision “draft folder.” I can tell you, when mine is operational, it’s amazing. When it’s not, woof. Have a great weekend. Thanks for listening. S4 Ep 230Monday Mission-Tell Yourself The Truth! Come Out of The Witness Protection Program

The Jason Wright Show Monday Mission “The first principle is that you must not fool yourself and you are the easiest person to fool.”-Richard P. Feynman Why do we lie to ourselves? Why to we act as though the things we tell ourselves are not impactful on how we act and live? In this Monday Morning Mission I ask you to do something that has been life changing for me-tell yourself the truth. Why do we lie to ourselves? There are three primary reasons To avoid-We don’t want to change so we lie to ourselves to avoid itTo protect-We don’t want to shame ourselves so we try to protect ourselves by lyingTo win-We want to think of ourselves as winners. We tell ourselves we are doing the thing we know to be wrong as a means of being successful. Often the things we lie to ourselves about for self protection are actually just self rejection. We lie to ourselves because we reject the truth about ourselves. STOP! Be honest with yourself. Why? It’s simple. The thing you are telling yourself to feel good is actually keeping you from doing the things that are good for you. Be honest with yourself. The top three things research has found people lie to themselves about. How many calories they eatHow much they drinkHow much they exercise Why do we lie to ourselves about these things? Finally, if you are bullsh***** yourself, others are aware of it. You may think your lies you use to fool yourself work on others, but they don’t. Your mission, should you choose to accept it: TELL YOURSELF THE TRUTH! Have a great week. Keep improving always in ALL ways! JW

S4 Ep 228Mastering, Dealing With NOT Eliminating Fear

Mastering, Dealing With NOT Eliminating Fear Fear can be crippling. I have dealt with fears my whole life. As a result I’ve been less than a good friend and mate. I’ve been less than a good co-worker. I’ve jumped ship from jobs as a result of fears. Mark Twain once said, “Courage is the resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear.” Fear will always exist. We need it for survival. There are actually people who have a debilitating condition by which they do not have fear. As a result they are in constant danger. Most of our fears if we really examine them are tiny little specs of dust we’ve imagined into great mountains. I equate them to The Wizard of Oz. They appear as this loud blustery demon yet when we pull back the curtain we find they possess little power at all. Here is a great exercise I discuss in this episode that Tim Ferriss refers to as “Fear Setting.” Tim Ferriss Fear Setting Exercise The biggest takeaway is to deal with your fears. Most of them are in fact False Evidence Appearing Real! Don’t be ruled by false evidence. Finally, I discuss Stoic philosophy in this episode. Seneca once said, “We suffer more often in imagination than reality.” The Stoics were obsessed with separating which is within our control vs. that which is not. Learn to focus on what is within your control and manage it accordingly. Finally, I discuss “The Process” made famous by University of Alabama head football coach Nick Saban. By obsessing over that which is in our control vs. that which is not, we have much greater potential for success. Thanks for listening. JW

Ep 227Monday Mission: Get sunlight to your eyes first thing in the day with Dr. Andrew Huberman

Dr. Andrew Huberman The Jason Wright Show In this episode of the Monday Mission I give you one small task. It’s to get 2-10 minutes of direct sunlight in your eyes early in the day. However, I don’t want you to just take my word for it. I incorporated the help of Dr. Andrew Huberman to help me make my case. Andrew Huberman, Ph.D., is a neuroscientist and tenured Professor in the Department of Neurobiology at the Stanford University School of Medicine. He has made numerous significant contributions to the fields of brain development, brain function and neural plasticity, which is the ability of our nervous system to rewire and learn new behaviors, skills and cognitive functioning. Huberman is a McKnight Foundation and Pew Foundation Fellow and was awarded the Cogan Award in 2017, given to the scientist making the most significant discoveries in the study of vision. His lab’s most recent work focuses on the influence of vision and respiration on human performance and brain states such as fear and courage. He also works on neural regeneration and directs a clinical trial to promote visual restoration in diseases that cause blindness. Huberman is also actively involved in developing tools now in use by the elite military in the U.S. and Canada, athletes, and technology industries to optimize performance in high stress environments, enhance neural plasticity, mitigate stress, and optimize sleep.  Work from the Huberman Laboratory at Stanford School of Medicine has been published in top journals including Nature, Science, and Cell and has been featured in TIME, BBC, Scientific American, Discover, and other top media outlets.
