Chuck Palahniuk is the author of Fight Club... a cult classic. And one of my favorite books. I felt so lucky getting to watch him breakdown storytelling. Because he does it in a way that goes beneath the surface. He takes you into what it means to be human. He makes you feel seen and like your life, as messy as it is, makes sense. Now he has a new book called, "Consider This: Moments in My Writing Life after Which Everything Was Different." Being informed is getting harder and harder. Everyone has an agenda. Some help you. Some get you to stay tuned it. Others get you to question. I want to question. Because that's we're growth is. I've been waiting for this moment. For seven years. Because 7 years ago my good friend Kamal Ravikant SELF-published a book. He uploaded it to Amazon. And sold half a million copies. This was without a publisher. Or a marketing team. Or any advance money. He just did it on his own. And it was hugely successful. He was able to use this money to pay for his rent in San Fransisco and basically all of his living for years. The book is called, "Love Yourself Like Your Life Depends on It." And now he's rewriting the book. And expanding on it. Because he got a lot of questions about the mechanics of loving yourself. People understood from the first copy why it was valuable. But they hoped for more guidance on how to do it themselves. So that's what this podcast is about. It's how to love yourself like your life depended on it. Plus we also talk about the benefits of self-publishing, bypassing the gatekeepers, being creative, being reflective and more. So here's the show and if you like it, please let us know. I'm jealous of Jeannie Gaffigan's brain tumor. Not the tumor itself. Or the feeding tube. Or side effects. But I'm jealous of the community that came to her side. Kamal Ravikant went to the hospital for a scheduled elective surgery. Everything went great. Until the stitches inside his body ripped. And he felt pain in his stomach. He asked the nurse for medicine. Soon his was spurting blood everywhere. One of the residents held him down to try to stop the bleeding. Kamal sat there in fear as he watched the inside of his liquids get all over this man. They had to get him back into surgery. But this time they didn't know if he'd make it out loud. Tim O'Brien is the bestselling author, "The Things They Carried." Tim wrote this book as a veteran of the Vietnam war. He was drafted. Like everyone else in their 20's at the time. "85, 90% of our casualties came from land mines," he said. "Not gunfire. Not the typical battle you'll see in movies. Landmines were the killing force." Every step he took was a mystery. People died all around him. ""I'll never know how close my foot was to a land mine," he said. Now he's 73. And has a new book. It's called "Dad's Maybe Book." His son came up with the title. But I look at this book as a sequel to "Thinks They Carried." Because both books include the idea of "maybe." "Will I live another day?" "every day has maybe," Tim said. "But that's true for everyone. We all write our maybe books. Maybe my dreams will come true. Maybe not. Maybe I'll change my dream, amend them or qualify them..."
