602 - You Can Change Passions at ANY Point in your Life with Rich Roll

Rich Roll QUIT his job in his 40's. Then he started over completely. He went from lawyer to extreme athlete, bestselling author, podcaster, a speaker and more. I went on his podcast recently. And now we're airing it here. We talked all about this idea of giving yourself permission to switch passions (or follow the one you've always dreamed of). Because it's never too late. I've switched careers in my 20's, 30's, 40's and 50's. I'll keep reinventing until I die. That's how you stay alive. BUT you also don't want to have to be at the bottom when you start over. So we talk about that too. Here's a list of things you'll learn about: How to do what people told you you never could do What to do when your fear of other people's opinion is bigger than your will to change your life Why fear is IMPORTANT in reinvention How to get the courage you need every day My upcoming book, "Skip The Line" and my latest book "Think Like A Billionaire" Rich's story of leaving his job in his 40's and starting over How to transfer skills from one job to a new one The importance of experimentation How to believe in yourself How to come up with ideas for reinvention (and how to know which ideas are good ones) Goal setting (when NOT to do it. And when to do it) Hot to discover what you actually like doing in life ALSO, make sure you get yourself this snack for quarantine. I'm obsessed. It's OutStanding Foods "Pigless Pork Rinds" (aka it's vegan). It tastes delicious. And it's full of protein. So you can feel good about snacking on it. I worked out a special deal for you. 601 - WHY Strategic Thinking is So Valuable (& how to do it) with Maria Konnikova

Maria Konnikova is a psychologist who studied her way into becoming a poker champion. She told me all the steps. And how this made her think better and more strategically about everything in life. She studied from scratch with one of the greatest poker players in history. Then she wrote a book about the experience, "The Biggest Bluff: How I Learned to Pay Attention, Master Myself, and Win." But the book isn't just about poker. It's about chance, decision-making, measuring the likelihood of certain outcomes, cutting your losses, and more. And the game even taught her how to ask (and answer) some of life's big questions: "How do we figure out what we can control? How do we figure out what we can't control? How do we learn the difference?" Here's a list of topics we cover: How to find the right mentor in life How to get good at decision-making How to master the skill of learning How to leverage what you already know Why it's more important to be curious than certain (and how to practice this daily) The importance of removing your ego How to always be one step ahead and think through outcomes And more. 600 - How to Become The Kind of Leader People Admire & Love with Randall K. Stutman, Ph. D.

Dr. Randall Stutman is the leadership coach for the most impressive CEOs, billionaires, hedge fund managers, etc. His list of clients just blows my mind. This episode is so valuable for understanding people, understanding leadership, being a good parent, growing as a person, developing your core values and so much more. I also highly recommend the course that Randall has been working on for two years. It's all about becoming "an admired leader." Which means you're somebody people admire. And love to follow. You can check out at admiredleadership.com Here's a list of more topics we talk about today: How to develop your unique leadership style (and one that actually intrinsically encourages people to follow you) How to develop your top three core values for leadership and apply them daily How to develop a high-quality decision-making ability Proof that everyone has the ability to become a valued leader in life Where leadership REALLY comes from The difference between motivation and inspiration How to be more inspiring to people all the time I write about all my podcasts! 599 - Obama Speech writer gave the view of democracy, David Litt

Is the U.S. really a democracy? How does voting actually work? And who came up with these rules? I want to know who the f*** the electoral college is, why do they exist, and what democracy really looks like. And how to get there. So I called up David Litt, former speechwriter for Obama, among others. He says, "We have an electoral college for a number of reasons. And they're all bad." So you'll learn about that. You'll learn why the U.S. government technically isn't really a democracy. And here's a longer list of lessons: Which parts of the country get overlooked in voting Why swing states have the most power How much say we "the people" really have in voting The difference between the popular vote and electoral college How much power the electoral college really has The math behind WHY the electoral college currently favors Trump How race plays a role in our current democracy Why the number of swing states has decreases The history of states becoming "red" or "blue" How to find out if your state "matters" in the election How property rights impact voting How slavery impacts voting today And more I write about all my podcasts! 598 - Exactly What to Expect As the U.S. Reopens with Phillip Stutts

Everyone is trying to predict the markets, the economy, consumer behavior, etc. But what does the data say? I called up Phillip Stutts to find out. He just released a brand new report that reveals consumer behavior throughout the pandemic. It tells you exactly what to expect as the U.S reopens, how we'll spend money, what we'll care about, etc. The report is fueled by real data and current research (available at winbigmedia.com). In this episode, Phill and I talk about the report plus: Consumer behavoir / How people spend money during lockdown vs. what will change post-lockdown in the long and short term Why males care less now about helping others Protests and being unheard Why safety is becoming center in consumer marketing (and how businesses can do this successfully) How commercial real estate is going to change COVID19 vaccines Why I'm not afraid to fly How to measure the lifetime value of a customer Google trends Whether or not higher education is dead The election and who to bet on (and how to bet on it!) 596 - What They're Not Telling You About the Protests with Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams

Eric Adams is the Brooklyn Borough President. He's also running for mayor. You probably remember the last time he came on. And talked about why he became a police officer... and how being physically beaten by the police inspired him to make change. Now, he's back on to explain the streams of the protests. Who's out there in peaceful protest? Who's disrupting it? Why are their professional anarchists robbing people of their chance to speak about injustice? And how do we move forward? 595 - How Less Government Leads to More Freedom with Vice President Elect Spike Cohen

Spike Cohen is the first anarchist AND the first millennial on the ticket for the upcoming 2020 election. He's the Vice President Elect for the libertarian party (the third largest political party in the U.S.). He has a lot of compelling arguments about the federal reserve, inflation, freedom, centralized government versus decentralized government, etc. And you might be wondering, 'Why does anyone run as a third party? What's the point?' I asked him this, too. But here's the real reason to listen to this episode: you get to challenge the conventional ideas of politics. I'd like to hear what you think. Blake Mycoskie is the founder of TOMS shoes, known for its "buy a pair, give a pair" model. But when Blake started he knew nothing about shoes. Or building a company. "It was just a project," he said. And yet it became a massively successful and has donated tens of millions of shoes to people in need. I asked Blake how he got the courage to start a company he knew nothing about. I also asked him about the business model, selling the company and building his new company, MadeFor, which is new wellness company that helps you learn how to have agency over your own health. Here's a list of all the things we talk about: The origin story of TOMS, their business model and how they took off How to develop a company that gives back How to find a cause you want to help Blake's new company, MadeFor and how to have agency over your health (and what to focus on) Healthy habits you can develop NOW Hallucinogenics Blake's advice for building a business during and after the pandemic And if you go to getmadefor.com and type in MFJAMESALTUCHER then you get 20% off. 593 - How to Be MORE Informed Than The Average Person with Jack Perry

People say not reading the news = being "uninformed." I disagree. I read books (history books, biology books, evolutionary books, economics books, etc.). But now, we live in a new world. And yesterday's information can become outdated tomorrow. So that begs the question, how do you stay informed? I called up Jack Perry, CEO of Synback, which has its finger on the pulse of all media to learn WHERE real information will be sourced in the future. And how to stay in the know. 592 - How to Invent a New Industry in Uncertain Times with Matthew Berry, The First-Ever Fantasy Football Analyst

The world economy is full of uncertainties. People are furloughed. Or scared of being furloughed. Or fired. Or scared of losing their job. Security isn't real right now. So we need other plans. I called up Matthew Berry, the first-ever Fantasy Sports analyst. Matthew basically invented a new industry and career entirely back in 2005. I wanted to learn the step-by-step process of starting over in uncertain times. And how we can apply these lessons today. I don't know anything about sports (real or fake). But if you're a fan of Fantasy Football, then good news for you. You can watch Matthew Berry on "The Fantasy Show" on EPSN+. You can listen to him on the Fantasy Focus Football podcast and download the Fantasy Life app, which is 100% free and Matt says their alerts are the best in the business. 591 - How to Think Like a Rocket Scientist with Ozan Varol

Facts are only facts for a period of time. This is true in science, in history, in economics, everywhere. But sometimes we forget that information changes. We get stuck thinking it's stagnant. And then WE become stagnant. But if you can look at facts and information from an alternate perspective (through the lens of a rocket science), you'll know how to get unstuck, persuade better, deal with uncertainty, have creative breakthroughs and more. In this episode you'll learn how Einstein (and other geniuses) learned to think differently). And why this will help you deal with the current fluctuation of facts and information. Ozan Varol is a trained rocket scientist and the author of "Think Like a Rocket Scientist: Simple Strategies You Can Use to Make Giant Leaps in Work and Life." In this episode we talk about: How Einstein learned to think differently How to deal with unclear information and uncertain times Where scientific (and creative) breakthroughs come from (and strategies to have them more often yourself) How to embrace the unknown What makes an idea groundbreaking How to imagine beyond society's limits and create something new How to re-imagine the status quo I write about all my podcasts! 585 - How Think For Yourself with John McAfee

John McAfee is a billionaire on the run from the government. He owes millions in taxes. And has strange and somewhat dangerous opinions on government, coronavirus, public safety, etc. (you'll see what I'm talking about). But some of his insights are worth debating. You'll hear what a totally insane person running from the government thinks about the current state of the world. And if you're asking yourself why his name is so familiar, it's because he started McAfee Associates, the anti-viral software you have on all your computers. Here's what we talked about: tax evasion the wild west running from your country people who think for themselves vs. people who don't think at all the media coronavirus and quarantine inflation The French Revolution And more. 584 - The Virus is a Wake Up Call with Congressman Tim Ryan

The government doesn't innovate. But Coronavirus is forcing it too. A lot of things have to change. Right vs. left. Voting stations vs remote voting. School lunches that lead to high rates of diabetes and sickness. Healthcare costs, and more. Congressman Tim Ryan is one of the few names I see proposing bills progressively in this time. He's sharp. And funny. And gets what people need. I asked him to walk us through what's broken and how this virus is helping to lead us to a better, reformed America. I write about all my podcasts! 582 - Mark Cuban on How to Reopen The Economy and Get People Back to Work

The White House called up Mark Cuban. They want him to help figure out how to open the economy back up. And give people their jobs, their income and access to opportunity. So I called him up to hear the plan. How will the U.S. government reopen to economy? And what should aspiring entrepreneurs do now? Here are some of the questions I asked: "Are you running for president?" "How do we avoid a Mad Max situation?" "What changes will we see in the near future? And down the road?" "How do we protect people from coronavirus while still getting back to work? What precautions will businesses have to take?" "Why did the fed give so much money to the airlines?" "Why is the market going up?" "What does innovation and entrepreneurship look like in the new normal?" And more I write about all my podcasts! Having multiple steams of income is key to wealth. So I called up Carl Allen who has successfully set up hundreds of deals. And currently has 9 side hustles. 578 - How 2 Minutes a Day of Networking Leads to New Opportunities with Jordan Harbinger

This is my networking hack: I dig through my inbox. Find an email chain from eight years ago (that I probably never responded to). Then I write back as if no time has passed at all. People love it. They forgive you for disappearing. And they're glad you got in touch. But that's my ONLY networking tip. Jordan Harbinger is the complete opposite networker than me. He's an expert at it. He's built thousands of relationships that have led to a top podcast, 6 million monthly downloads, speaking gigs, freedom to work for himself, be creative daily and more. In this episode, he tells me how he keeps track of people, build relationships, re-engages old, lost connections and what you can techniques you can use in your life starting now. 577 - How to Navigate Uncertainty in Quarantine with Psychologist Scott Barry Kaufman

Everyone says, "Flatten the curve." But there are two curves. We all know the main one: the spread of coronavirus. The other curve is the spread of psychological viruses; fear, anxiety, worry and panic. We're all experiencing Maslow's hierarchy of needs. We started out attacking each other for basic items like toilet paper, then we moved on to connection (Zoom calls and FaceTime), but how do we get to the top of the pyramid (i.e. self-actualization)? I called up Scott Barry Kaufman, a humanistic psychologist and author of "Transcend: The New Science of Self-Actualization." And he had a lot of practical advice. One of his tips: We don't have to worry about finding our one true purpose. We just need to find a purpose right now and pursue it. This episode will help make a roadmap for finding your purpose and fulfillment while stuck in Quarantine. And after. I write about all my podcasts! 576 - Coronavirus Update: What The Stimulus REALLY Means for The Global Economy with Jim McKelvey, the Deputy Chair of the St. Louis Federal Reserve

Right now, the Federal Reserve is pumping trillions of dollars of stimulus into the economy. So what does this mean? How are small businesses doing? When will people go back to work? And how does this impact the economy? I called up Jim Mckelvey. He's the co-founder of the multi-billion dollar business, Square. AND, more importantly, he's the Deputy Chair of the St. Louis Federal Reserve. He tells us how the stimulus works, what the risks are, what we should keep an eye on and more. People are losing their jobs. And schools have stopped functioning properly. The "normal" way of society is on pause. And we don't know for how long. 574 - Predictions For a Post COVID-19 World with Global A.I. Expert, Kevin Surace

AI used to be, what most people thought, was the biggest threat to our economic security. Now it's coronavirus. BUT one of the side effects of coronavirus is an acceleration of our future. Meaning that what used to seem like a "potential" truth (like robots stocking shelves, factories being automated, remote work, and so on) is all here faster than we had thought. So I brought on Kevin Surace to talk about these previous "future" predictions and show how they're happening now. AND we talk about what else we can foresee in a post coronavirus world. Kevin's been on the podcast before. He's an expert in A.I. He's built and sold AI companies and runs one right now. 573 - 13 Myths That The Coronavirus Exposed

I don't want to regret how I spend this time. But I also don't want to pressure myself to reinvent or write a book or create a business. I want to find the medium ground. How can I give to people who are struggling? Stay safe? And not get lost in fear? One way is to tackle the myths. Myths = fear and stupididity. So I sat down with my wife, Robyn, to talk about 13 coronavirus myths (ranging from unemployment rates, death rates, the future of work, etc.). We talk about how these 13 myths are impacting our behaviors. And what we can do differently to get enough rest, calm our minds and help take care of each other. I write about all my podcasts! 569 - 5 Ways TO Increase Your Persuasive Abilities AND Change Anyone's Mind with Wharton Professor Jonah Berger

Other than eating and breathing, persuasion is the most important skill you could have. Because a pre-skill to persuasion is the ability to understand yourself and other enough to create a chain reaction of changes in life. Persuasion is what sets us up to have agency in the world. And there's a specific, 5-step framework that lets you understand how to be more persuasive in your everyday life. So I'm having Jonah Berger on the show. He's a professor at Wharton, a bestselling author and now he has a new book, "The Catalyst: How to Change Anyone's Mind." I write about all my podcasts! 568 - You Don't Have to Be Qualified to Go After Your Dream with Dan Carlin Host of "Hardcore History"

Dan Carlin hosts the #1 history podcast, "Hardcore History." It has a cult following. For a lot of reasons: 1. Dan has an incredible voice. 2. his research is so weird and extensive and detailed. And 3. Dan is known for breaking rules. He went around the standard path. And decided that he didn't need to have a history degree or some pre-approved "credentials" to create the best history show out there. He just went ahead and did it. So I have him on today to find out how he gave himself permission to do what he loves. Despite all the reasons not to... So that we can give ourselves that same permission and start to do what we love. ? I write about all my podcasts! Check out the full post and learn what I learned at jamesaltucher.com/podcast. 567 - Coronavirus Economy Update: What’s Happening Right Now with Economist Tyler Cowen

People are starting to lose jobs. And gigs. And become uncertain. Uncertainty brings up fear. Which is a pandemic on its own. I keep saying, "Prepare. Don't Panic." And so do my guests. So today, I interview economist Tyler Cowen. I ask him about the stimulus package, the job market, inflation, deflation, supply and demand, what the world will look like if people keep losing work. How we can get back to work. When is it safe? Flattening the curve, and more. And if you like this update, please let us know. So we can keep bringing you information that spreads peace. Over fear. We could all use kindness all the time. But we need it now more than ever. I asked Lewis Howes for his advice. But we recorded this a few weeks back. Before the world's pandemic. I'm glad I'm releasing it now. Because it's the best time to remember how to love people. And then DO it. And if you like this episode, make sure to check out Lewis' podcast, "The School of Greatness" Also, I've been getting great feedback on how these episodes around the coronavirus are helping people make sense in a really confusing time.
