The James Altucher Show

Gilbert Gottfried started doing stand-up comedy when he was 15 years old. He dropped out of high school and within 10 years he was on Saturday Night Live. And he built his career up from there. But he's also been the center of a lot of controversies. People get upset at comedians for "going too far." But Gilbert does it for a reason... He said, "I remember, I did this show that was a tribute to Joan Rivers. It was right after there was that shooting at a gay nightclub. I started doing jokes about the shooting and the audience was laughing all the way through and you know, Joan Rivers has a large gay audience. One guy tweeted me and he said, 'I never thought that I'd wake up crying and go to sleep laughing.'" It's easy to misunderstand people. And get upset. Whenever I'm made, I say to myself, "This means I'm not understanding something." So then I move that anger into curiosity. I kept asking Gilbert about his jokes. And we walked me through the humor. I got nervous because David Rubenstein is the co-founder and co-chariman of The Carlyle Group, which is the biggest private equity firm maybe in the world. They own hundreds of companies and have $200 billion in assets. He's also the chairman of a lot of other things: The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, The Smithsonian and he also has his on show, "The David Rubenstein show," where he's interviewed so many brilliant people. His success could be intimating. But he doesn't want it to be. He said, "I'm 69. I didn't start Carlye until I was 37. Maybe people find what they love earlier. I found out later I life." Then he walked me through this. He told me how he stumbled into his new love for philanthropy and the careers he experimented with early on his life and how he learned how to develop new skills at different stages of his career (like motivation and persuasion.) "Right now, there is somebody out there who is trying to hack you. And not just one," Yuval said. Brandon is a Navy SEAL. He's experienced some of the most terrifying, life-threatening situations you can imagine. He's also been through a divorce. So I like talking to him about that. And he also runs his own business (a media to commerce called the Hurricane Group). He's not getting shot at anymore. Bert took his shirt off on stage. He did an hour special on Netflix called "Secret Time" and he's topless the whole time. Someone even wrote him a 5-page letter explaining why it offended her.
