Ep 732Should We STOP Requiring CISOs To Have A CISSP? Let’s Talk About It | Redefining Security With Brian Bobo

We keep hearing the mantra that CISOs and CSOs need to be business leaders. So how come we keep seeing job descriptions and hearing about interviews that focus on the technical certifications like the CISSP and many others? That's exactly the question posed in a post on LinkedIn that caught our attention - and that of many others!Join us for a candid conversation with the post's author, a current CIO and CISO, Brian Bobo, as we explore the realities of what a CISO should be focused on and why relying on a technical security certification could turn the business looking in the wrong direction and leaving their risk profile in a bad way. From The LinkedIn PostI don’t post much but I need to go on a bit of a rant. I earned my CISSP years ago. As I am updating my CPEs to stay current I realize that almost nothing I do as a CISO counts for CPEs, I don’t even see a place to document incident management. And what does count can only really be categorized under the Security and Risk Management domain. Presenting, educating, serving on ISC(2) boards are all well and good but they still don’t make me a better CISO. There is nothing about strategy, leadership, presenting to a board, incident management, etc. As a CISO, strategy and leadership should be your focus. You should hire then allow and enable great people to do their jobs. So we need to STOP requiring Directors and above to have a CISSP and start thinking about these as leadership positions with a security focus.____________________________GuestBrian BoboOn LinkedIn | https://www.linkedin.com/in/brianbobo/____________________________ResourcesLinkedIn thread that inspired this conversation: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/brianbobo_stop-requiring-cisos-to-have-a-cissp-i-don-activity-6841017539837997056-HGwu/____________________________This Episode’s SponsorsImperva: https://itspm.ag/imperva277117988HITRUST: https://itspm.ag/itsphitweb____________________________To see and hear more Redefining Security content on ITSPmagazine, visit:https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-securityAre you interested in sponsoring an ITSPmagazine Channel?👉 https://www.itspmagazine.com/podcast-series-sponsorships Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. You may have not seen AI yet, but there is a good chance that AI has seen you. Artificial Intelligence can be used to create tremendous commercial value and can be used to bring significant improvements in how society functions. However, it must, and can, be done at the same time.We need to create and follow international standards that allow us to build AI around scientific and practical core ethics that can still retain those morals that make us humans, even when adapted to various countries and cultures. Maybe this is a time of self-reflection and understanding for who we really are. Ep 729Book | Critical Infrastructure Risk Assessment: The Definitive Threat Identification And Threat Reduction Handbook | Redefining Security With Ernie Hayden

In a world where everything is connected and interdependent, complexity has become part of our very way of life, and it must be part of our way of thinking. But, especially when we look at infrastructure security, the boundaries between analog and digital, physical and cyber, are simply not there anymore. In today's conversation, we discuss the importance of looking at our society, economy, and security as a complex system of interdependent subsystems. Everything is connected, and we are not just referring to IoT.From bridges to nuclear plants, to the President's car, and all the way up to space, the security assessment of critical infrastructure is not a checklist but a mindset. About The BookAs a manager or engineer have you ever been assigned a task to perform a risk assessment of one of your facilities or plant systems? What if you are an insurance inspector or corporate auditor? Do you know how to prepare yourself for the inspection, decided what to look for, and how to write your report? This is a handbook for junior and senior personnel alike on what constitutes critical infrastructure and risk and offers guides to the risk assessor on preparation, performance, and documentation of a risk assessment of a complex facility. This is a definite “must read” for consultants, plant managers, corporate risk managers, junior and senior engineers, and university students before they jump into their first technical assignment.____________________________GuestErnie HaydenOn LinkedIn | https://www.linkedin.com/in/enhayden/Publisher's Twitter | https://twitter.com/RothsteinPub____________________________ResourcesBook: https://www.rothstein.com/product/critical-infrastructure-risk-assessment-the-definitive-threat-identification-and-threat-reduction-handbook/____________________________This Episode’s SponsorsArcher: https://itspm.ag/rsaarchwebEdgescan: https://itspm.ag/itspegweb____________________________To see and hear more Redefining Security content on ITSPmagazine, visit:https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-securityAre you interested in sponsoring an ITSPmagazine Channel?👉 https://www.itspmagazine.com/podcast-series-sponsorships Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 728Event Presentation | October 20th 2021 Is The First Ever SOC Analyst Appreciation Day | We Learn About It In This Conversation With Jason Mical

SOC analysts are often overworked and under-appreciated — but that needs to change! This conversation is designed to encourage organizations to take steps to improve job satisfaction and mental well-being through recognition and rewards. We must remember that SOC analysts aren't robots tasked solely with clicking buttons from start to finish during their often stressful shift each day. Yes, their work can appear tedious and therefore seem unimportant to those outside of the security operations function, but that doesn't mean that what they do daily isn't critical for protecting the business. In this first of three episodes covering the first-ever SOC Analyst Appreciation Day, we get to speak with Jason Mical, a leader in the world of Security Operation Centers, exploring the reasons behind why the SOC analysts' work doesn't always get noticed.ITSPmagazine is proud to partner with Devo to recognize the efforts put in by the practitioners working away in the trenches and on the front lines of cybersecurity. Join us to help us recognize them and their efforts.About the SOC Analyst Appreciation DayJoin us for five hours of live-streamed content — with sessions ranging from what skills are needed to move up in the SOC, to desk decompression from a yoga instructor, to a panel discussion about a day in the life of a SOC, to a "Lunch & Laugh" where a stand-up comedian will provide some much-needed de-stressing entertainment. Ep 727The Intersectionality Between Privacy Law And UX Design | Redefining Technology With Stephanie Lucas And Dr Jennifer King

Who do you rely on at your organization for data privacy expertise? Your legal team? Your security engineering team? Was "UX designer" among your first thoughts? The answer is likely no. And that's a problem."States are starting to pass laws protecting consumer privacy, and some, like California’s, have specific requirements around design." — Dr. Jennifer King, Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence“There's an enormous opportunity for cross-collaboration between the privacy law and the product design communities. While historically, legal teams have been regarded as almost cultural adversaries to designers, that's absolutely not the case with privacy. The good news is that in today's regulatory climate, attorneys, regulatory agencies, and human-centered designers are playing for the same side.” — Stephanie Lucas, UX designer and speaker focused on privacy and trust. In this podcast we talk about advertising, design, privacy, dark patterns, privacy law, and so much more.Join us! ______________________________GuestsDr Jennifer KingOn Linkedin | https://www.linkedin.com/in/jenking/On Twitter | https://twitter.com/kingjenStephanie LucasOn Linkedin | https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephanielucaslinkedin/On Twitter | https://twitter.com/eyesondesign00______________________________ResourcesIt’s High Time for Product Designers To Become Privacy Practitioners: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/its-high-time-product-designers-become-privacy-stephanie-lucas/Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence: https://hai.stanford.edu/Dark Patterns Tip Line: https://www.darkpatternstipline.org/Dark Patterns Website: https://www.darkpatterns.org/______________________________ This Episode’s SponsorsBlue Lava 👉 https://itspm.ag/blue-lava-w2qs______________________________To see and hear more Redefining Technology stories on ITSPmagazine, visit:🎙✨ https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-technologyAre you interested in sponsoring an ITSPmagazine Channel?👉 https://www.itspmagazine.com/podcast-series-sponsorships Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 722AI Or Human? Exploring GPT-3 Disinformation, Artificial Intelligence, And Creativity | A Conversation With Andrew Lohn And Micah Musser | DeltaX Podcast With Ellen Xu

In this special Black Hat episode, Andrew Lohn and Micah Musser explain “Disinformation At Scale: Using GPT-3 Maliciously for Information Operations” - the double-edged sword of large language models. The Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3, or GPT-3, is an autoregressive language model that uses deep learning to produce human-like text, created by OpenAI. In other words: “Autocomplete on steroids.” It is currently the largest and most powerful natural language model in the world, and can write realistic text from almost any genre. In this episode, I discuss with guests Andrew Lohn and Micah Musser:How can GPT-3 be used to amplify disinformation? What are the implications GPT-3 has for Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)? Can GPT-3 be considered “creative”?What are the future trends for this technology, cybersecurity, and society? And… Did I use any GPT technology to write parts of this show notes? Ep 721The Road To Athens | What Does It Take To Lead The US Cyber Team To Victory? | Redefining Education With Jasmine Jackson And TJ OConnor

Everyone likes to quote De Coubertin, the visionary founder of the modern Olympic Games: "The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part." But let's face it, when we compete, we all try to win.The US Cyber Games is no different; it is about competing and winning, but it is also about learning and promoting a different way of educating the future generation of cybersecurity professionals. Everyone who participates in such an innovative event has something to learn, even the coaches themselves: from other teams, each other, and the competitors. The InfoSec complexity requires diversity and a wide variety of skills that no single individual can master on their own. And, just like in any other team sport, each one has a role to play to bring their nation to the highest step on the podium. And if that doesn't happen, yes, the important part rolls back yo taking part and, in this case, helping to fill the infamous workforce gap in cybersecurity. It is a win for society, no doubt about it.Enjoy this podcast.____________________________About the International Cybersecurity ChallengeIn the first International Cybersecurity Challenge, teams from across the globe will compete in a series of challenges such as web application and system exploitation, cryptography, reverse engineering, hardware challenges, forensics and escape rooms.About the US Cyber GamesThe US Cyber Games was founded by Katzcy, in cooperation with the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) program at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Ep 718Book | Ally Up: The Definitive Guide To Building More Inclusive, Innovative, And Productive Teams | An Audio Signals Conversation With Author, Di Ciruolo

When it comes to addressing the lack of diversity in technology, the checkbox approach coupled with the measurement of rates and figures may or may not be a good place to start. Regardless, it may be that we need to understand the why before anything else.In this episode, we speak with Di Ciruolo, a top DEI Consultant who asks our listeners to consider, "Why should people care about being allies?".The current system, she reveals, is full of blame for inequalities. It is full of shame, too. Insiders at top tech companies share eye-opening stories about what DEI is really like in Silicon Valley and beyond. We learn that allyship isn't about blame or shame; it's about action.Listen in to see why checking the box and improving the numbers being measured isn't enough. It ultimately boils down to the why lead by sponsorship over mentorship.About the bookIn 2020, companies are at a culture crossroad: get dragged under by sticking their collective heads in the sand, or take the right steps to weave diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives (DEI) into every layer of their business.Companies can do better and know better by implementing allyship into their operations—from creating cultures and onboarding to team-building and benefits. Backed by multitudinous research studies and professional interviews and experience, this book teaches allyship and promotes inclusion at every step of the employee life cycle, including how to lead better with interviews from those doing the work in the tech, biotech, academy, and startup communities.Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are the buzzwords of the business world, but it’s the statistics that sting: 85% of corporate executives and board members in the U.S. are white men. Companies are trying to create more inclusive workplaces by creating new policies and changing hiring practices, but they’re missing allyship._____________________________GuestDi CiruoloOn Linkedin | https://www.linkedin.com/in/diciruolo/On Twitter | https://twitter.com/diciruoloOn TikTok | https://www.tiktok.com/@diciruolo_____________________________This Episode’s SponsorsBlue Lava: https://itspm.ag/blue-lava-w2qsNintex: https://itspm.ag/itspntweb_____________________________For more podcast stories from Audio Signals: https://www.itspmagazine.com/audio-signals_____________________________ResourcesAlly Up: The Definitive Guide to Building More Inclusive, Innovative, and Productive Teams: https://www.amazon.com/Ally-Definitive-Inclusive-Innovative-Productive/dp/1631954016/Learn more about Di Ciruolo: https://www.diversitywoman.com/dwm/di-ciruolo/_____________________________For more podcast stories from Audio Signals: https://www.itspmagazine.com/audio-signalsAre you interested in sponsoring an ITSPmagazine Channel?👉 https://www.itspmagazine.com/podcast-series-sponsorships Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 713Hearing Access, Disabilities, Innovations, Policies, And Society. How To Effect Change | The Mentor Project Series On ITSPmagazine | Redefining Society With Janice Lintz

The difference between a problem and a solution is action. It may sound simple, but most of the time, it isn't. It requires motivation, commitment, determination, an open mind, and the will to tackle the issue from different angles. Until you find the one that works well enough.Suppose this is true, and it is, for each problem; it is even more so when we talk about disabilities, diversity, inclusion, and how our societies have dealt with them since the dawn of time: there is a place for diversity, but that place is not with the majority, not in the system that works for most.Change requires efforts, understanding, solutions, determination, and ultimately the policymakers' desire and commitment to make it happen.Today out guest told us her story of how you can start the process and eventually make such change happen__ spoiler alert, she is still fighting for it every day.In this podcast, we talk about hearing access, disabilities, innovations, policies, and Society. How to effect change and never get no for an answer.A big thank you to The Mentor Project for bringing Janice Lintz to talk to ITSPmagazine and sharing her story about the way she has been, and still is, Redefining Society.Enjoy this podcast and share it so that someone else can get motivated to become a changemaker. Ep 708How To Interview A CISO Candidate: The Questions Missing From Stakeholders That Are Missing From The Process | Redefining Security With Anshu Gupta

As with most things in life that require some thought, before making a decision and taking action, it's often best to figure out the "why" behind the result. In this case, start with the "Why are we hiring a CISO" question. But then what? That's where things get interesting. Undoubtedly, the answer to "Why" sets the stage for the play that's about to be performed, but each scene is different — each rendition has a unique story — each production has a different set of cast members. All of these variances determine not only who you are looking for but the questions you ask the candidates presenting themselves as your next CISO.What are those questions, and who should ask them of the CISO candidate? Anshu Gupta not only talks about this but he's also written a document outlining what we are going to review — essentially the "why" behind his doing so as well.Ultimately, the interview process should quickly uncoverWhy they do what they do as a CISO and as a member of society; How they plan to build/expand a team that they can manage and lead; How they plan to help enable (not block) the business to reach its objective as it grows and its risk profile changesEnjoy!____________________________GuestAnshu GuptaOn LinkedIn | https://www.linkedin.com/in/anshuguptapmp/On Twitter | https://twitter.com/fromanshu____________________________ResourcesList of Questions: https://docs.google.com/document/u/2/d/1q9XVEf3LPDT8d3OwSzA3ExJmXGwlkhO4x1nYMVartqk/edit?usp=sharingLinkedIn thread that inspired this conversation: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/activity-6831341664334966784-FRRs/____________________________This Episode’s SponsorsImperva: https://itspm.ag/imperva277117988HITRUST: https://itspm.ag/itsphitweb____________________________To see and hear more Redefining Security content on ITSPmagazine, visit:https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-securityAre you interested in sponsoring an ITSPmagazine Channel?👉 https://www.itspmagazine.com/podcast-series-sponsorships Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 703Sociolinguistics. Connecting Language With Society And The Way It Adapts To Its Changes | The Mentor Project Series On ITSPmagazine | Redefining Society With Valerie Fridland

Linguistics is the scientific study of language and its structure. Sociolinguistics is the study of language in relation to social factors. How do the changes in our societies affect the way we communicate, and in what ways does technology come into play?Good questions, right? We asked many more during this episode of Redefining Society. From why we say "Hello!" when answering the phone to how new generations' communications methods are affected by today's technology as well as every new generational language changes in history. How will upcoming advanced technologies change the game even more? Time will tell. In the meantime, our guest, Valerie Fridland, gives us some insight as to what we might expect. We are humans, and communication in all forms is part of who we are, and despite particular adaptations, all the forms of language we use will stay at the core of who we are as a species. Not sure about it? Then let's talk about it. We cannot believe how much we learned on this podcast! Ep 701The Road To Athens | Redefining Education By Reaching A Global, Connected Audience Through Real-World Scenarios And Gaming | On Location With Jessica Gulick And Roland Cloutier

CyberSecurity is a really cool profession, there is room for many to join in, and the skills required are numerous and diverse. So why aren't we attracting enough people into this massively understaffed field? The answer likely sits in the industry's elitism and inability to reach the audience with the right message, early enough and with the proper training mechanisms. However, that's about to change. We'd like to introduce you to the first International Cybersecurity Challenge, which is destined to be held in Athens, Greece, and tentatively scheduled for December 7-12, 2021.The adventure started a few months ago, but the excitement is far from over. At this stage, The US team has selected their coaches, the team is trying out as part of the Cyber Combine selection process, and several critical milestones are ahead of us.What is also happening is that this unique and innovative competition is making the news, interesting the public, and bringing new players to join the ranks of those supporting this initiative.Today we talk about this and much more.Ready, Player One? Two? Three? Four? Let’s go!____________________________About the International Cybersecurity ChallengeIn the first International Cybersecurity Challenge, teams from across the globe will compete in a series of challenges such as web application and system exploitation, cryptography, reverse engineering, hardware challenges, forensics and escape rooms.About the US Cyber GamesThe US Cyber Games was founded by Katzcy, in cooperation with the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) program at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Ep 699Be Fascinated: What It Takes To Find Fulfillment And To Be A Good Leader | Redefining Security With Scott Olson

Leadership can make or break an organization's chance for success, and eventually, it will. It doesn't matter what company, organization, or community teams you lead—all you do and how you do it matters for the end result.Given the nature of the function within the cybersecurity industry, someone may think that their style needs to be more decisive than most; that maybe they even and get some "wild cards" due to the uniqueness of their role. The truth is that there is no "uniqueness" in this industry, and the basic rules of effective leadership work the same for all. You are either a good leader, or you are not.Today's conversation extends well beyond cybersecurity as our guest, Scott Olson, brings to bear the realities of what it takes to be a leader in any industry, in any function, and find fulfillment in a leadership position. Becoming a leader doesn't happen magically. It also doesn't require you to excel in the roles you lead or know what it feels like to be in any position you oversee. Instead, it involves understanding and embracing the big picture and transitioning your sense of self-worth when needed."The mistake that we make in the leadership industry is that we think behaviors correlate to performance: here are the ten things that great leaders do; here are the five things that great leaders avoid. I'm an influenced leader. I'm a charismatic leader. I'm a servant leader. People don't follow you because you're a specific type of leader. People don't even follow because they like you. What I've found is that people follow you if they know you like them if they know that you value them, that you see who and what they are, that you appreciate what they're capable of, and that you appreciate that they are doing what you need." —Scott OlsonWhat does "being fascinated" have to do with good leadership? Have a listen to find out.____________________________GuestScott OlsonOn LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/scottolsonexec/____________________________ResourcesThe book, Can.Trust.Will. Ep 693Language Holds The Key To Communicating Security And Business Strategy And Plans | A Blue Lava Story With Jen Sanford And Rock Lambros

CISOs tend to talk to other technical personnel and don’t get involved in business conversations on a regular basis. To succeed in their role, however, CISOs need to get out from behind their keyboards and start discussions with executives so they can begin to translate what they do in security into what the business wants to hear. But finding those connection points between technology and the business is difficult. To help CISOs break this cycle of being disconnected from the business, this ITSPmagazine podcast features CISO strategy and planning insights from Kyriakos "Rock" Lambros of RockCyber and Jen Sanford from Blue Lava. The podcast covers risk and security management strategies that align with what businesses need and how CISOs can be students of their businesses. We also discuss how to become an enabler rather than someone who heads an InfoSec known as “The Department of No” because it blocks all the cool technologies that ultimately benefits business and helps the organization achieve its objectives.During the podcast, Martin, Lambros and Sanford focus on strategy and planning because that’s what helps CISOs evolve into the role they want now and into the future. But it doesn’t happen magically. Only through understanding, research, and action, can CISOs reach that point. It’s time to make your own magic happen. We start our weekly conversation by talking about the way we are consuming art today. Virtual reality, immersive digital experiences, and other modern mediums allow us to present and consume art from the past in new innovative ways, but we wonder: would the artist agree? And what would an artist from the past do with today's technology?👉 https://vangoghexpo.comDiana brings the news about how new research is discovering the therapeutic effect of particular light and audio waves on people that suffer from Alzheimer's. A non-invasive solution that improves memory and recused amyloid plaques — for now in mice but looks promising for human application.Sean shares a piece of news that makes our imagination fire up and go in in many different directions — as a matter of fact, it is about audio spatial technology that allows users to live an audio-only augmented reality. From gaming with your friends in a shared audio environment to commercial applications, new software applications are cleverly 3D mapping audio to transport users to another space. So what else can we do with that?Marco brings the virtual reality conversation to the next level talking about the human need to escape reality, living imaginary adventures via storytelling, books, movies, and video games where technology is the factor that can bring the detachment from reality to the immersive level of a metaverse.
