As with most things in life that require some thought, before making a decision and taking action, it's often best to figure out the "why" behind the result. In this case, start with the "Why are we hiring a CISO" question. But then what?
That's where things get interesting. Undoubtedly, the answer to "Why" sets the stage for the play that's about to be performed, but each scene is different — each rendition has a unique story — each production has a different set of cast members. All of these variances determine not only who you are looking for but the questions you ask the candidates presenting themselves as your next CISO.
What are those questions, and who should ask them of the CISO candidate? Anshu Gupta not only talks about this but he's also written a document outlining what we are going to review — essentially the "why" behind his doing so as well.
Ultimately, the interview process should quickly uncover
- Why they do what they do as a CISO and as a member of society;
- How they plan to build/expand a team that they can manage and lead;
- How they plan to help enable (not block) the business to reach its objective as it grows and its risk profile changes
