Ep 819From Ancient Tomb Traps To Modern-Day Honeypots | Intrusion Detection And Deception: The Role Of Honey Pots And Human Nature In Cybersecurity Education | Redefining Security With Assistant Professor C. Jordan Howell, Author Chris Sanders, And Student William Palafox
It's easy to get sucked into the world of technology, often forgetting that there are humans behind the keyboards creating the technology. There's a program out of Texas changing this reality by using a book on deception and honeypots to study cyber attacker behavior. When I saw this post (https://twitter.com/Dr_Cybercrime/status/1462506991012786190/), I knew immediately I wanted to learn more about how a practitioner's book could be used to change how we teach the next generation of cybersecurity practitioners - blue teams, red teams, and purple teams alike.During this conversation we get to hear from a practitioner/author, a professor, and a student. We look back to ancient Egyptian tomb-protection practices and work our way to a future where we keep a close eye on the humans with technology. Yes, even though we continue to throw all sorts of technology at the problems we face (yep, the same ones we humans have created), the human is still at the center of these scenarios. As with most things, there's no single easy answer to a problem. This remains true here in this conversation as we ended up talking about the ethical lines drawn around how and where we can study the how/when/why people (bad actors) act when presented with a a variety of opportunities to take advantage of a situation. Is it OK to track bad actors and their behavior? How far can that be taken? Can we do like the ancient Egyptians and lock someone in our cyber tomb if we catch them in a place they shouldn't be?Regardless of your position on this matter, we bring this episode to you "em hotep."____________________________GuestsC. Ep 812The OWASP Top 10 2021 Edition: What Changed And What Must You Change In Application Development Given The Updated Top List Of Broken (AKA Weak Or Vulnerable) Things? | Redefining Security With Diana Kelley, Andrew van der Stock, And Nabil Hannan
Every few years, a group of individuals work together to deliver what has become a staple in application security practices: The Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) Top 10. In the 2021 edition, the team took a fresh look at the data and what it means. Everything changed while somehow stayed the same. The real changes are in how organizations should look at this information and how to use it to make a difference in their application development and information security programs. While data analytics played a huge role in changing the game for the OWASP Top 10 for 2021, it's the humans that will see the outcomes come to fruition. Ep 808The One On How I'm Hacking You Next Year | KnightLife On ITSPmagazine With Alissa Valentina Knight
While other people are telling you their predictions in cybersecurity for 2022, I take a different approach by telling you how I'm going to hack you in 2022.I find it funny that a lot of the predictions for what is going to happen in cybersecurity in 2022 for CISOs to make buying decisions are being published by vendors themselves. Some would say this is not the most impartial recommendation. Instead of telling you what I'm predicting will happen, I go through a litany of tactics and techniques I'll be using to breach networks in my adversarial content for 2022 based on the epic fails of companies in 2021.________________________________HostAlissa Valentina KnightOn ITSPmagazine 👉 https://www.itspmagazine.com/itspmagazine-podcast-radio-hosts/alissa-valentina-knight________________________________This Episode’s Sponsors________________________________To watch the video version of this conversation on YouTube: https://youtu.be/S_mfu2bFr0MFor more podcast stories from KnightLife on ITSPmagazine With Alissa Valentina Knight: https://www.itspmagazine.com/knightlife-on-itspmagazineAre you interested in sponsoring an ITSPmagazine Channel?👉 https://www.itspmagazine.com/podcast-series-sponsorships Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 807Branding, Marketing, Support, Content Governance And How Artificial Intelligence Can Help. Also, How It Cannot | Redefining Society With Christopher Willis
Remember the good old days when branding was what the company, and its advertising agency, decided it was? Well, content is not what it used to be. Everything that refers to the company is content nowadays, and governing it is a big challenge. When every written or spoken thing is content, marketing, and branding, and keeping track of the script gets scary, who are you gonna call? AI?Sure, Artificial Intelligence can help; also, it cannot. It can understand the language, but that doesn’t make it a writer. A bot can have a decent chat, but that doesn’t make it human.Anyway, listen to this podcast… some more content to manage!____________________________GuestChristopher WillisOn LinkedIn | https://www.linkedin.com/in/cpwillis/On Twitter | https://twitter.com/cpwillis____________________________Resources____________________________This Episode’s SponsorsBugcrowd 👉 https://itspm.ag/itspbgcwebBlackCloak 👉 https://itspm.ag/itspbcweb____________________________To see and hear more Redefining Society stories on ITSPmagazine, visit:https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-societyAre you interested in sponsoring an ITSPmagazine Channel?👉 https://www.itspmagazine.com/podcast-series-sponsorships Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 804Transparency And Explainability For A Responsible And Ethical AI | Redefining Technology With Stephan Jou
Why should we fear Artificial Intelligence? After all, we are the ones that are creating it, and yet we seem to not be aware of what the ultimate outcome will be. So what can we do to ensure that we are not creating some kind of unethical monster machinery that will not know the difference between what is good or bad for those who brought it to life? There is no doubt in our mind that such an ethical path must be defined and the subsequent strategies and regulations need to be adopted and followed by the whole scientific community.Of this, the importance of transparency and explainability for the future of a responsible and ethical AI we discuss in this podcast.Put your thinking cap on and join us. ______________________________GuestStephan JouOn Linkedin | https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephan-jou-7b952/On Twitter | https://twitter.com/eeksock______________________________ResourcesSector CA Session: https://sector.ca/sessions/responsible-and-ethical-ai-for-cyber-why-its-important-why-its-hard-how-to-do-it/EU Regulation: https://ec.europa.eu/newsroom/dae/document.cfm?doc_id=75788Guide: https://www.alexandra.dk/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Alexandra-Instituttet-whitepaper-Privacy-Preserving-Machine-Learning-A-Practical-Guide.pdf______________________________This Episode’s SponsorsBlueLava ✨ https://itspm.ag/blue-lava-w2qsDevo ✨ https://itspm.ag/itspdvwebAre you interested in sponsoring an ITSPmagazine Channel?👉 https://www.itspmagazine.com/podcast-series-sponsorships______________________________To see and hear more Redefining Technology stories on ITSPmagazine, visit:🎙✨ https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-technology Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 802Book | Rip Tide: A Narrative On Cyber Security Failures At The National Level. | Redefining Security With Gregory Touhill And Chase Cunningham
Giving us some insight into what's being discussed in the US government and how previous cyber attack scenarios played out and will ultimately define how we prepare and respond in the future, guests Gregory Touhill and Chase Cunningham join us to discuss the "good guy vs bad actor" scenarios they play out the narrative of their new book, Rip Tide: A Narrative On Cyber Security Failures At The National Level.Book AbstractThe United States, while possessing potent cyber operational capabilities, increasingly is focused on intelligence gathering and offensive cyber operations. Defensive cyber operations and day-to-day operations of critical mission-enabling information technology are increasingly outsourced to a variety collection of vendors and their subordinate partners. As 2021 nears its conclusion, elements within the US Department of Defense are advocating outsourcing the operations and maintenance of its foundational mission-enabling information technology systems and networks with an eye toward what they call a “single service provider.” In this allegorical story, the authors present an independent third-party discussion of the topic with an eye on answering the question, “What possibly could go wrong with that?” It is our hope that this discussion will educate and inform policy makers in both the executive and legislative branches to make the best-informed risk management decisions to preserve, protect, and defend our country.____________________________GuestsGregory TouhillOn LinkedIn | https://www.linkedin.com/in/gregorytouhill/On Twitter | https://twitter.com/gregory_touhillChase CunninghamOn LinkedIn | https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-chase-cunningham/On Twitter | https://twitter.com/CynjaChaseC____________________________This Episode’s SponsorsArcher: https://itspm.ag/rsaarchwebHITRUST: https://itspm.ag/itsphitweb____________________________ResourcesRip Tide: A Narrative on Cyber Security Failures at the National Level: https://www.amazon.com/Rip-Tide-Narrative-Security-Failures/dp/B09L9TD3SV____________________________To see and hear more Redefining Security content on ITSPmagazine, visit:https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-securityAre you interested in sponsoring an ITSPmagazine Channel?👉 https://www.itspmagazine.com/podcast-series-sponsorships Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 789Can Artificial Intelligence Be An Artist? | An Audio Signals Conversation With Ben Kovalis
This is a story that you haven’t heard yet, but we guarantee that it won’t be the last of its kind. It is a tale of art, technology, digital collectors, Artificial Intelligence, creativity, NFTs (Non-fungible tokens), and so much more.It starts with a painter that has spent precious time creating an original piece of art. As soon as the brush rests on the table, an art critic judges the job, forcing the artist to start over again and do better. The painter returns to work, the critic weights in again, and the process repeats until the antagonist is fooled. Finally, the adversarial challenge is over; the piece is minted and eventually sold to a human collector. Because you see, the artist is AI. And so is the critic. Now the collector that acquired the piece is challenged as well. A new decision must be made: keeping the digital art, auctioning it, or obtaining a second one and eventually renounce both to create a new unique piece of the two originals that will be “burned” to give life to the new one and eventually be acquired, potentially changed by the new owners that will add yet another chapter to the history of the piece. An ever-changing art story is possible because of AI, NFTs, and the human creativity that fuels art.So, can Artificial Intelligence be an artist? Can it be it on its own, or it must have the human input to be considered such?Of this and much more, we talk in this podcast with Ben Kovalis and Marco Ciappelli.Enjoy, and let us know your thoughts about the matter. Whether you are a digital or human entity, either way, we will treasure your feedback. 😬_____________________________GuestBen KovalisOn Linkedin | https://www.linkedin.com/in/ben-kovalis/On Twitter | https://twitter.com/Ben_Kovalis_____________________________This Episode’s SponsorsBlue Lava: https://itspm.ag/blue-lava-w2qsNintex: https://itspm.ag/itspntweb_____________________________For more podcast stories from Audio Signals: https://www.itspmagazine.com/audio-signals_____________________________ResourcesAn NFT Guide for Newcomershttps://www.altcoinbuzz.io/nft/an-nft-guide-for-newcomers/NFT Newshttps://www.altcoinbuzz.io/author/aidan/page/2/Open Sea reference to what was discussedThis is the first collection that consists of 10k pieces: https://opensea.io/collection/eponym This is the second generation collection of highly curated pieces: https://opensea.io/collection/eponym-gen2_____________________________For more podcast stories from Audio Signals: https://www.itspmagazine.com/audio-signalsAre you interested in sponsoring an ITSPmagazine Channel?👉 https://www.itspmagazine.com/podcast-series-sponsorships Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 786Words Matter: Understanding The Vocabulary Used Between Business Leaders And CISOs | A Blue Lava Story With Demetrios Lazarikos (Laz)
This is certainly not a new or revolutionary statement: "Words Matter." What is new nowadays is the pace at which our business, relationships, and society change. Technology is fueling many of these changes, and we are all learning new ways as we go. As we're trying to figure out what we are doing and where we're going to go next, the words we use to describe the world around us matter even more than ever. We must understand the power of our words and how they may land depending on who gets to hear them. In short, we need to use them wisely and adapt them to the audience we are talking to — especially in a highly technical field such as cybersecurity; we sure need to think more about the matter if we want to be heard and understood.Join us and our guest, Demetrios Lazarikos (Laz), for a candid conversation about how words shaped his own life, shaped his company [listen to the Blue Lava origin story here], and how they helped him learn to be a student of the business as a 3-time CISO. It's important to know your audience, tailor the message to them, and choose your words wisely. There's a moral to this story, and Laz's words matter immensely for those seeking to run an information security program that not only protects the business but also helps it achieve its objectives.Note: This story contains promotional content. Ep 783The Psychology Of Cybersecurity And The Value Of Thinking Outside The Box | Redefining Security With Morgan Wright
The problem is not the problem, it is the way you think about the problem. Get outside the box.Fear, manipulation, influence and deceit are some of the most powerful tools in the arsenal used by nation state attackers and criminal actors. The most significant breaches have not occurred just because of flaws in software, or lack of proper controls. They have occurred because of the flaws in our way of thinking about the problems. Determined adversaries will use every tool in order to gain an advantage whether it’s hardware, software or wetware.Join us as our guest, Morgan Wright, takes us into the mind of the attackers from a non-technical view and explore the psychology of cybersecurity.GuestMorgan WrightOn LinkedIn | https://www.linkedin.com/in/morganwright150/On Twitter | https://twitter.com/morganwright_us____________________________This Episode’s SponsorsArcher: https://itspm.ag/rsaarchwebHITRUST: https://itspm.ag/itsphitweb____________________________ResourcesSector CA Session: https://sector.ca/sessions/what-elon-musk-and-spacex-can-teach-us-about-ransomware-and-cybersecurity/More from Morgan: https://www.morganwright.us/____________________________To see and hear more Redefining Security content on ITSPmagazine, visit:https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-securityAre you interested in sponsoring an ITSPmagazine Channel?👉 https://www.itspmagazine.com/podcast-series-sponsorships Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 779Workflow Orchestration: The Whole Is Greater Than The Sum Of Its Parts | A Nintex Story | With Jesse McHargue, Nicole (Prestby) Vesser, Rhia Wieclawek, And Ben Stori
In this fifth episode, the group gets into some real-world stories where multiple workflows come together in an orchestrated fashion to amplify the investments in workflow management and automation exponentially. In the previous four episodes, we looked at what it takes to transition from manual, human-driven (frequently paper-bound) processes to an operating environment where applications can handle tasks with very little human interaction. This doesn't mean that everything can (and should be) automated. Quite the opposite is true in some cases. But, once processes have been automated, it sure is fun (and valuable) to find ways to connect them all in exciting and meaningful ways. When an organization wants to get more out of the processes they've already automated, that's where orchestration comes into play. Picture a conductor conducting an orchestra comprised of different sections -- brass, winds, percussion. This is what automated business processes can look like -- all coming together to create a symphony of goodness in areas such as:Systems and humans (employees)IT and OT (medical/healthcare)Apps, devices, and sensors (city bike rentals)AI and Robots (manufacturing)Customers and their experience (theme parks)Listen to get some insight that can be applied to your digital business processes now and in the future. This is a 5-part podcast series with Nintex thought leaders and solutions partners. The series walks through the lifecycle of employing business process management (BPM) and business process automation (BPA) throughout the organization.______________________The 5 episodes in this series include:DEFINITIONCONSTRUCTIONEXECUTIONAUTOMATIONORCHESTRATIONThis contains promotional content. There are plenty of challenges when it comes to securing the clinical and IT infrastructure of healthcare delivery organizations. Ep 771The University (And City) Of The Future — Bridging Arts And Business With Technology | Redefining Society With Sonia Mackay-Coghill And Andrew Woodward
Too often, we think about Universities and any place of teaching as places where young people learn about the past and form themselves for the professions that will define their career, and their life. While this is partially true, it is very far off from all the academic world is. As a matter of fact, it is the place where the future is made—something that shouldn’t be taken lightly under any circumstances.Today's podcast is with Prof. Andrew Woodward, Executive Dean at Edit Cowan University, and Sonia Mackay-Coghill, ECU Vice-President of Engagement. The topic of our conversation is related to the recently revealed project for the realization of ECU City: the boundary-breaking campus is set to reshape the heart of Perth (Australia) and deliver new energy that connects the city's business, cultural and entertainment precincts. We take this opportunity to discuss what the role of Universities is moving forward and how it could, and should, become the connection point between generations, diverse academic disciplines, businesses, government, and ultimately the pulsating heart that can fuel a city's environment and its citizens. If It is true—and it is—that the only constant in life is change, we must construct academic paths that lead to dynamic and ever-evolving careers. To do so, ECU has involved business partners and the government to help shape this vision of a university that mixes Creativity and Technology like it has never been done before.Technology is undoubtedly fueling the digital transformation that is changing our society, but humanity is fueling it all. Creativity allows us to think outside the box, envisioning our future, experimenting with new ideas, communicating them, and of course, being sure that all of this serves humanity on a global scale.ECU City will be a place where technology, industry, and creativity meet to deliver innovative thinkers, adaptive learners, and global citizens who will be the leaders of tomorrow.Join us on this exciting journey into the University Of The Future.____________________________GuestsSonia Mackay-CoghillOn LinkedIn | https://www.linkedin.com/in/sonia-mackay-coghill-1a9142157/On Twitter | https://twitter.com/CoghillSoniaAndrew WoodwardOn LinkedIn | https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrew-woodward-477726b/On Twitter | https://twitter.com/EdithCowanUni____________________________ResourcesLearn more about this project: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/claudia-bertorello-kell-25145427_ecu-ecucity-opportunityunbound-activity-6832462501477806080-LMLG/About The ECU City ProgramECU City is the centrepiece of the Perth City Deal, a collaboration between the Australian Government , The Government of Western Australia and City of Perth.
