WALK MS with Team Jillian

Aired March 17, 2024:Please join us for TEAM JILLIAN's 17th year at WALK MS! It's happening Sunday, March 24th at the Rose Bowl! She was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2008 when she was 23 years old. Like most of you, we had heard of MS - but didn't know anything about what this disease can do to your mind and your body. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a very unpredictable disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. MS is different for everyone, making it more challenging to solve. If you know Jill, you know she keeps life positive and hides her bad days well. Her symptoms are different every day. They can include numbness, weakness and tingling in her arms and legs and face, double and blurred vision, extreme fatigue, joint pain, migraines, slurred speech, brain fog. The first Walk MS event was in 1988, and since then more than $920 million has been raised for research and programs to improve the lives of people living with MS. Today, there are treatments where there weren't any before, and the dream of ending MS is becoming a reality. But there is still so much to do. Jill and her family formed Team Jillian the year she was diagnosed and we won't stop until there is a cure. The money raised will drive groundbreaking research, provide life-changing programs and guarantee a supportive community for those who need it most. The National MS Society has been there for Jillian since she was diagnosed - and we are so incredibly thankful for the work they do. Help us get one step closer to finally saying there is a cure for Multiple Sclerosis! Multiple sclerosis is a disease that impacts the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves, which make up the central nervous system and controls everything we do. The exact cause of MS is unknown, but we do know that something triggers the immune system to attack the CNS. The resulting damage to myelin, the protective layer insulating wire-like nerve fibers, disrupts signals to and from the brain. This interruption of communication signals causes unpredictable symptoms such as numbness, tingling, mood changes, memory problems, pain, fatigue, blindness and/or paralysis. Everyone’s experience with MS is different and these losses may be temporary or long lasting. https://www.nationalmssociety.org/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Learning How To Be Less Wasteful With Habits Of Waste

Aired October 22, 2023:How wasteful are we? Are you? Habits of Waste believes in the power of the individual to make small changes within their daily lives to protect the planet and combat climate change. They offer suggestions and provide solutions, helping individuals to live more eco consciously without overwhelm. We all have a role to play. H.O.W. founder Sheila Morovati successfully spearheaded the historic ban on single-use plastic straws and cutlery in the City of Malibu. Sheila realized that an iconic beach city like Malibu would create the ripple effect that was so necessary to create change. Malibu was the first city to make such a ban go into effect and the number of cities and countries that followed suit is awe-inspiring. Since then, Sheila created numerous campaigns that have effected change such as #CutOutCutlery, which successfully convinced Uber Eats, Postmates, Doordash and Grubhub to change the default setting in their applications so that users only receive plastic cutlery upon request. This campaign is ongoing. Sheila also founded a non-profit called, crayoncollection.org, which has grown to become a tremendous success with a presence in all 50 states and 9 countries. Her idea was to redirect would-have-been-trashed crayons from restaurants and well served communities and distribute them, along with free art education curricula, to Title 1 Schools and Head Start Centers within 5 miles of the donor. Restaurants throw away over 150 million crayons per year, which do not decompose as they are made of paraffin wax. In addition, Sheila felt this behavior was subliminally teaching, our children, that a throw-away culture is acceptable. Since inception, Crayon Collection has redirected over 20 million crayons from landfill and continues to set a new norm throughout society, that still-good crayons are not trash. It's ALWAYS a good time to talk about ways to improve our environment and planet as a whole, but with the holidays and holiday parties here...what better time to prepare to NOT be wasteful. The non-profit organization Habits of Waste is ALL about spreading that message YEAR-ROUND as they are focused on changing people's daily habits by encouraging everyone to rethink wasteful behavior. Their mission: Cleaning up the planet one “habit of waste” at a time. They’ve got some valuable tips and campaigns in place that are already making a difference, but they’ll be even MORE IMPACTFUL if more of us jump on board to FUEL REAL CHANGE by being less wasteful...as the U.S. produces 268 million tons of waste — 140 million going into landfills — each year, with the average American tossing 4.5 pounds of trash per day. TONS of great info on their website...Get Started with a Reusable Starter Kit/ NO Plastic Straws & Cutlery/ NO Plastic Bottles/Food Waste/Water Waste/Air Pollution/ Energy Plant-Based Diet/Say NO to Palm Oil/Use REUSABLE BAGS AT THE GROCERY STORE/Start with MEATLESS MONDAYS...and so much more!Lisa Foxx chats with Sheila Morovati, the Founder Habits of Waste for a very informative and eye-opening conversation. There's SO MANY easy ways to start being less wasteful and we can start NOW. Find out more at habitsofwaste.org See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Employee Retention Tax Credits

Aired September 17, 2023: EJ interviewed Jace Campbell about the ERTC. The ERTC was introduced in the CARES Act in 2020 as a way of supporting businesses who kept employees on the payroll despite financial hardships of the pandemic and oppressive governmental orders. This program seemed too good to be true at first, and so I would explain it to clients like this: "If you had financial hardship during the pandemic or your business was impacted by governmental orders, but you kept employees on your payroll and out of the unemployment lines, the government was providing cash to help soften your financial impact."The maximum an employer could receive in 2020 was $5,000 per employee, so this financially less costly to the government than if those employees had ended up claiming unemployment. In 2021 the cash refunds increased to $7,000 per employee per quarter; however, many of the governmental orders began lifting and businesses were not directly impacted to the same degree, so fewer businesses qualified in 2021.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Since they launched the food drive, back in 2011, the Independence from Hunger campaign efforts have collected nearly $16.5 million dollars nationwide to help feed those in need in local communities. The campaign will collect cash donations and pre-made bags of nonperishable foods in-store at Grocery Outlet’s 450 locations that will be distributed to local food agencies partners. With the ongoing inflation, families continue to turn to food banks as 34 million people in the United States are currently food insecure. Fueling Science And Fighting Cancer With the Concern Foundation

Aired July 9, 2023: Lisa Foxx talks to Derek Alpert, the President of the Concern Foundation. They provide critical funding to post-doctoral cancer researchers focused primarily on cancer genetics, cell biology and immunology for all forms of cancer prevention and treatment. Started in 1968, by fifteen Los Angeles couples who didn't want to see their dear friend Beverly Wolman die of breast cancer at age 35.The Concern Foundation depends on a local, national and international network of donors. There are countless individuals, local businesses and corporations who provide generous support each year. With an administrative overhead of less than 10%, Concern has been able to grant millions of dollars to research projects throughout the cancer research community locally, nationally, and abroad. Thanks to a strong and ever-growing core of multi-generational volunteers, Concern continues to thrive as an independent source of funding cancer research. Additionally, biennial meetings of a peer-to-peer Scientific Review Committee ensures that only the strongest and most promising research is funded. Concern Foundation’s mission is clear, to ensure that every dollar raised is used to identify the cause of and eventual cure for this devastating disease. To get involved and be a part of their great work, click here: concernfoundation.org See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
